Yanks recall Al Aceves

By Joseph Pawlikowski

You’ve probably heard by now, but just in case: The Yankees have recalled RHP Alfredo Aceves from AAA Scranton. To free up room on the 25-man they’ve optioned RHP Anthony Claggett. This gives the Yanks a long man, though they probably don’t much need one at this point. I have a feeling this move is in anticipation of a rainout tonight. Aceves would probably start one game of a doubleheader tomorrow. That would keep the rotation on regular rest. If they were to go Hughes-Joba tomorrow, they’d have to find another starter to fill in on Saturday in Baltimore, since they wouldn’t dare throw either on three days’ rest. If the game gets called tonight, look for an Aceves-Hughes doubleheader tomorrow.

No one here has special insight…you can google around and check other blogs just as well as we can. Chad Jennings or a Yankee beat writer would be likely to have the info earlier than anyone here…go check those sites.

It’s just that this guy has done this a couple of times. “Hey, guys…can someone else look this up for me?”

No, dude…look it up yourself.

yea for real…its like hmm..let me google that for u.

Fat, drunk, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

AMS223 says:

why wouldnt they start aceves against Baltimore…not saying that these games are must wins, but I’d want the best 2 pitches possible going against boston, especially after the last series against them.

whozat says:

Why? Boston actually has a more anemic offense than the Orioles.

AMS223 says:

throwing aceves into a yanks red sox game first series at the new stadium against either lester or beckett is a tough assignment…for anyone, but especially a spot starter making his first appearance of the year

whozat says:

A) Beckett has been terrible all year.
B) You’re not pitching against the opposing starter. You’re pitching against the opposing hitters, and the Sox aren’t hitting as well as the O’s right now. And they’re injured.

Also, this is just Joe’s speculation. He may be right, but I sort of think it’s more about the issue of a lengthy delay in the early innings.

The more important thing is keeping the regular 5 on a good rotation schedule. Teams often call up lesser pitchers to throw one half of a doubleheader so that the rotation doesn’t have anybody throwing on short/long rest afterwards.

Anemic is the wrong word for both offenses. Anyhow, Boston has scored more runs.

whozat says:

Than the Orioles? Color me surprised, with their OF. I figure the Sox have a hole at SS, a hole at DH, and I know Drew has been out a lot as well.

But, true, anemic is overstating it for both the Os and the Sox.

O’s have issues at C, SS, LF.

“O’s have issues at C”

Not for long they don’t.

Ahhh, Matt Weiters. Waitresses at Hooters tip Matt Weiters 15%.

Jones, Markakis, Brian Roberts, and Luke Scott have been raking.

The rest of the Orioles lineup has been pretty pathetic. Izturis, Pie, Wigginton, Zaun, Freel, etc. are black holes. They just got Mora back.

Their team OPS+ is actually only 92. Sox OPS+ is 107.

whozat says:

Ah, makes sense. Well, Weiters will fix that hole at C right up, and that kid they’ve got in AAA that’s a LFer is promising too, no? I’m surprised Wigginton has been that bad, and I didn’t know Mora was on the DL.

Yeah, I think Riemold and Wieters are probably starting for the big league club by the end of the month.

So, we’re looking at possibly

Mon 5/4 – PPD
Tue 5/5 BOS – #1: Hughes v. Lester, #2: Aceves v. ???
Wed 5/6 TBA – Joba v. Sonnanstine
Thu 5/7 TBA – Burnett v. Niemann
Fr 5/ 8 @ BAL- Pettitte v. Guthrie
Sat 5/ 9 @ BAL- Sabathia v. Eaton
Sun 5/10 @ BAL- Hughes v. Uehara
Mon 5/11 – off (skip Joba in the rotation)
Tue 5/12 @ TOR- Burnett v. ???
Wed 5/13 @ TOR- Pettitte v. ???
Thu 5/14 @ TOR- Sabathia v. ???

and back home again v. Twins, Orioles, Phillies

Push everyone (other than Hughes) back a day and line up Joba’s turn with the dark day in the schedule? How much skipping is too much skipping for Joba?

Joba will not pitch Wed. They aren’t pushing the vets off another day. They would hold him off until Saturday.

Slugger27 says:

i would rather skip this start for joba (if we do indeed get rained out tonight)… move burnett up to wednesday and everyone else up a slot

If we do it that way, it’s:

Mon 5/4 – PPD
Tue 5/5 BOS – #1: Hughes v. Lester, #2: Aceves v. ???
Wed 5/6 TBA – Burnett v. Sonnanstine
Thu 5/7 TBA – Pettitte v. Niemann
Fr 5/ 8 @ BAL- Sabathia v. Guthrie
Sat 5/ 9 @ BAL- Joba v. Eaton
Sun 5/10 @ BAL- Hughes v. Uehara
Mon 5/11 – off (skip nobody)
Tue 5/12 @ TOR- Burnett v. ???
Wed 5/13 @ TOR- Pettitte v. ???
Thu 5/14 @ TOR- Sabathia v. ???

Unless we’re skipping A.J. Burnett on the dark day, the 3 vets are going to be starting either the home games against the Rays on 5 days rest or the road series in Toronto on 5 days rest.

You pick.

Your first hypothetical had them on 6 days off. This is better.

Yeah, you’re right. Forgot about yesterday’s rainout in my calculations.

Plan #2 it is.

cult of basebaal says:

another reason for bringing up aceves is that if they *do* start the game tonite, and for some reason there was anything other than a short rain delay, they wouldn’t have to have hughes go back out to the mound afterwards …

Exactly. Nor would they have to blow out the entire bullpen.

This all starts with the assumption that the game tonight will be postponed.

I live less than 2 miles (the way the crow flies) from the Stadium. It’s pouring on and off right now. I doubt they play. They might try, but I doubt it.

I’m sitting less than 5 blocks (the way the vagrant walks) from the Stadium. It’s pouring on and off here too. I doubt they play.

Tommie = http://www.hung-truong.com/blo.....03/1up.jpg

cult of basebaal says:

i think they’re definitely try to get the game in.

tomorrow doesn’t look good for a day/night DH, since it’s supposed to rain in the morning (and again at night, according to weather.com).

right now, it appears the break is somewhere down around Philly, i figure they’ll give it a while (couple of hours) to see if they can squeeze the game into that window

pat says:

A roof on this new stadium would have been nice, whats an extra 400mil between friends?

Mike Pop says:

I agree with this. Would of been awesome to have a dome.

desus says:

Something about a summer night in new york and sitting under a dome at a yankees game that just doesn’t “feel right”.

The new stadium is amazing but a dome would have just added fodder to the whole “mall with a ballfield” description that many have used to describe the new ballpark.

Matt ACTY says:

Something about a summer night in new york and sitting under a dome at a yankees game that just doesn’t “feel right”.

I think we’re talking retractable dome here. I’d be all for that.

A.D. says:

Agreed, no one makes 100% dome baseball stadiums anymore. I think the original Mets plans involved a dome.

The most recent team to build a non-retractable roof dome would be the Tampa Bay Rays.

TropicanaField = Epic Fail

A.D. says:

They didn’t build it, they just signed a terrible lease to use it.

(Comments wont nest below this level)

True.

And, yes, it’s a terrible, horrible lease. Can’t leave St. Pete for 30 years, that’s rough.

Slugger27 says:

if u have a retractable roof, its the best of both worlds!

Mike Pop says:

Retractable, man. Be worth it. Get every game in, no games where it is pouring or a 2-1 game called in the top 6 when the Yanks are down. I don’t know, I would like it from my perspective. Then again, I only go to 2-5 games a year but would be nice to avoid rainouts cause I’m an impatient motherfucker.

Cano would hit better!

Chris says:

A retractable roof would be nice. A dome would be the worst move ever.

So would the game being on ESPN affect how long they’d be willing to delay it?

Marc says:

I need this game to happen lol. I nearly died yesterday without the game. They took away the games for 6 freaking months and now they want to cancel back to back games!!

I nearly died yesterday without the game.

Marge, look at me! We’ve been separated for a day and I’m as dirty as a Frenchman. In another few hours, I’ll be dead. I can’t afford to lose your trust again.

Drew says:

Wow, call up Claggett then send him down. What the hell is going on here? This pitcher thin is getting ridiculous. We obviously don’t need ANOTHER bullpen arm. What’s the over/under on Veras pitching today, I’d say 60%, I’ll take the over.

Drew says:

You seem to be overreacting a little.

We have options on these guys. That means we can send them up and down as much as we want (more or less) in order to flexibly construct a 25-man roster that most closely meets the roster needs of our team for every single game.

We need a longman? Cool, send someone down and call one up. Then, a week later, we need another backup infielder? Send someone down and call one up. We got in a blowout and want to carry 8 bullpen arms to ease the strain? Send someone down and call some arms up.

How is that bad?

Ask Joe Morgan- you need consistancy. All the changes, it makes you inconsitant.

whozat says:

Misspelling “inconsistent”…intentionally or unintentionally hilarious?

Intentional- stolen from FJM.

whozat says:

I loved that blog. Sigh.

Drew says:

Calling up Claggett, letting D-Rob sit, sending Albie out for one out, I mean, at what point does this become detrimental to their growth. Maybe you can enlighten me, calling up Claggett for one day, then getting rained out and sending him back down only to recall another bullpen arm, how does this make any sense?
I’m not overreacting as much as I am just confused on what the reasoning could possibly be with the latest moves after Marte’s placement on the DL.

Called up Claggett for Marte. Two straight rainouts means either rain shortened appearances or a double header. Enter Aceves.

Drew says:

Claggett wasn’t called up to “replace” Marte though. He was called up to be an extra arm in case we needed that extra arm after using Edwar, D-Rob, Albie and everyone else in the pen. So if he’s the last man in the pen, why didn’t we just call up Al in the first place. This is my only issue with the recent move. Maybe Alf wasn’t available at the time, but if that’s not the case I really don’t get why he wasn’t here yesterday but he’s here today.

Because without the bad weather, they didnt feel they needed a long man. With the inclement weather, they feel that they do.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
Drew says:

Yes I know, yesterday, bad weather, no?

whozat says:

Yes, but the specter of a double-header wasn’t there yesterday. Also, there were pitchers who hadn’t had a day off. Now, every arm in the pen has had a day off. If it’s almost a toss-up between Claggett and Aceves, something like every arm in the pen being available can change the calculation pretty easy.

whozat says:

Yesterday, the need was for another middle relief option. Today, the more likely need is for someone to pick up after a lengthy rain delay in the early innings, or to spot-start in a doubleheader tomorrow.

Different needs call for different arms.

steve (different one) says:

here’s a question: when did Aceves last start?

maybe he wasn’t available to pitch until today.

Matt ACTY says:

How is that bad?

Brian Cashman made the move, correct? Brian Cashman is bad GM. Therefore, every move he makes is bad. Simple enough for you?

whozat says:

There was plenty of well-reasoned discussion about this throughout the thread.

Drew says:

True I got in late.. Haven’t read the comments yet. Sorry if I was redundant.

pat says:

Yanks just wanna bump errbody up a paygrade.

Oliver Perez to the pen. if at any point you get upset about the state of Yankee pitching, just remeber that.

JohnnyC says:

Takahashi (a career relief pitcher in Japan) goes into the Mets rotation in Perez’s place. Omar is definitely the sub-genius.

Oh, and jerry Manuel said he would rather shorten the game than have a better starter.

whozat says:

That’s all the evidence I need. Joba to the pen! He’s the manager of an MLB team! He knows better than me!

Matt ACTY says:

He’s gonna be changing his tune come October when the Mets are again stuck outside looking in. If they had gotten Lowe over the winter, they’d be in position to win that division easily.

steve (different one) says:

agreed. no idea how you pass on Lowe for Perez.

remember when people here wanted to sign Perez? chrikees.

Hi, I'm Jerry, this is my associate Cornelius says:

Are we getting this game in? Have they opened the gates?

JohnnyC says:

Gates are open. They’re letting people in…but that’s the charm of the new Stadium — huge concourses so fans can get out of the rain. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll get the game in tonight though.

Hi, I'm Jerry, this is my associate Cornelius says:

Thanks…Stuck at work.

Drew says:

At what point will we realize, as Mike A. pointed out the other day, that we just have too many arms out there?

Probably never, cause it ain’t true. If you start to get some good pitching, you can make a change. Until then, you need as many options as you can fit out there.

Drew says:

How can guys get consistent work to keep them sharp when we have 7 arms to pitch the 6th-8th innings? It doesn’t add up.

whozat says:

If they find themselves in the position that there’s too much consistently good relief pitching, then they’ll send someone down. Until then, they keep finding themselves needing to pull guys in-game because they’re sucking and run someone else out there. So you need all the options.

whozat says:

When a better usage of that roster slot presents itself.

Outside of the one time that they pinch hit Gardner for Ransom, I can’t recall a time that I thought “man, I wish they had a lefty pinch hitter with a terrible platoon split right here…”

Drew says:

Man. I’m gonna be mad if we don’t play!

Nady Nation says:

Just out of curiosity, why does everyone assume there will be a DH tomorrow? The weather is supposed to be shitty again, and we still play the Sawx several more times at home, so a DH could be scheduled for later in the season. Plus, just looking briefly, it seems like June 15th would be a solid makeup date. We’re between home series with the Mets and Nats, and the Sawx are between series at Philly and then going back to Beantown for Florida

Good point.

http://www.weather.com/weather.....undeclared

Looks like there’s a small window between noon and 6. I bet they announce a doubleheader and then end up canceling the second half of it.

Hope we pitch Hughes in the first game (since there may not be a second.

Drew says:

Nothing like sitting one of our hottest hitters (Dek). Does Jorge really need a day off from catching after 6 innings off two days ago? WTF!!!

Whoa. Lots of anti-Joe stuff from you in this thread. Probably decided to go defense at catcher after going offense at 3rd due to the lefty. Dont want Ellsbury running around on Phil.

Plus, one of the ways to keep Hideki one of our hottest hitters is to rest him frequently.

He’s still old, and those knees are still ticking time bombs.

Maybe it’s a Molina-catch-Hughes thing.

You seem to be overreacting a lot today.

Drew says:

Lol, sorry guys! I’m usually level-headed. A loss, then a day off eats at my soul!

yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

On the weather radar it looks like it supposed to stop raining about 8.30 so the game should start around 9.00.
