Charleston fails to pick up a hit

By

DJ Mitchell was named Florida State League Pitcher of the Week, while Cory Arbiso and Corban Joseph took home Pitcher and Hitter of the Week honors for the South Atlantic League.

Nice little piece about Austin Jackson, make sure you give it a read.

Triple-A Scranton (4-0 win over Toledo)
Kevin Russo: 3 for 4, 3 R, 3 2B, 1 HBP – 14 for his last 29 (.483)
Ramiro Pena: 2 for 3, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Austin Jackson: 2 for 5, 1 2B, 1 RBI - just his second multi-hit game since the All Star break
Shelley Duncan: 1 for 3, 2 BB – 6 for his last 36 (.167), and four of those hits came in one game
Juan Miranda, Chris Stewart & John Rodriguez: all 0 for 4 – Miranda drove in a run … Stewart scored a run & K’ed twice … J-Rod K’ed in his first game off the DL
Yurendell DeCaster & Colin Curtis: both 1 for 4, 1 K
Zach Kroenke: 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2-4 GB/FB – 37 of 59 pitches were strikes (62.8%) … picked two runners off first … that’s a helluva spot start
Eric Wordekemper: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 5-5 GB/FB – 30 of 43 pitches were strikes (69.8%) … just up from AA because Jason Johnson is back on the DL
Kevin Whelan: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 2-1 GB/FB – 11 of 16 pitches were strikes (68.8%)

Double-A Trenton (9-1 loss to Harrisburg)
Austin Krum: 0 for 1, 2 BB
Reegie Corona, Edwar Gonzalez & James Cooper: all 1 for 3 – Coop drove in a run & K’ed
Eduardo Nunez: 1 for 4, 1 K
Jesus Montero: 0 for 4, 1 K, 1 PB – bust
Chris Malec: 2 for 4
Ryan Pope: 5.1 IP, 12 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4-7 GB/FB – second nine run outing in his last five starts
Kanekoa Texeira: 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 3-3 GB/FB
Wilkins Arias: 1 IP, zeroes, 3 K – I’d say he did his job

High-A Tampa (9-0 win over Charlotte)
Dan Brewer & David Adams: both 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 K – Brewer was hit by a pitch … Adams hit a solo jack & walked
Luis Nunez, Brandon Laird & Walt Ibarra: all 1 for 5 - Nunez doubled, drove in two & scored a run … Laird drove in a run & K’ed … Ibarra scored a run
Austin Romine: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP
Damon Sublett & Jack Rye: both 2 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K – Rye scored a run

Noel Castillo: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 3-2 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (4-0 loss to West Virginia)
The Lineup: combined 0 for 28, 8 K - yep, they got no-hit a few days after the GCL Yanks did … Addison Maruszak getting hit by a pitch & Mitch Abeita reaching on an error were the only thing standing keeping them from being perfect game’d
Trenton Lare: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 7-5 GB/FB - first start up from State Island
Dan Kapala: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2-0 GB/FB

Short Season Staten Island (5-3 loss to Hudson Valley)
Jimmy Paredes, Kyle Higashioka & Carmen Angelini: all 0 for 4 – Paredes & Angelini each K’ed once, Higashioka thrice
Zoilo Almonte & DeAngelo Mack: both 2 for 4, 1 K – Almonte doubled & got caught trying to steal a base … Mack doubled twice, drove in a run & scored another
Neill Medchill: 0 for 2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 SB
Luke Murton: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 HBP - 10 for his last 23 (.435)
Hector Rabago: 1 for 4, 1 K
Adam Warren: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 7-2 GB/FB – make that 29 straight scoreless innings
Paul Patterson: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2-3 GB/FB
Ronny Marte: 1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 0 K, 2-1 GB/FB, 1 E (throwing)

The Rookie GCL Yanks were rained out. They’re going to make it up as part of an August 6th doubleheader.

I can’t believe they came back!!!

I was there motherfucker, was horrible.

  2. Ivan says:

I should slap the shit out of Montero myself for going 0-4. Who the fuck he think he is going 0-4. Fuck you Montero, you fuckin pussy ass bitch. Fuck you.

    /Bernazard’d

  3. “Jesus Montero: 0 for 4, 1 K, 1 PB – bust

Maybe we can still get Vernon Wells for him straight up. Get Riccardi on the phone before it’s too late!

  4. Mikebk says:

A-Jax and pena making a stake to come up tonight.
but after watching the game and how girardi morphed into torre only using his guys leave a-jax and pena down there.

    • Moshe Mandel says:

The only guy he hasn’t used is Melancon. Let’s not turn this into a bigger issue than it is.

      • Mikebk says:

and the comparable is a young player who can develop in AAA vs riding the bench in NY, which is what i think he would do to A-Jax to play Melky.

        • Moshe Mandel says:

Girardi has not been very stingy in how he has used young guys like Hughes, Coke, Gardner, and Cervelli.

          • Mikebk says:

hughes had been here before and we can argue that since he chose to give an ineffective wang a shot back in the rotation rather than keep hughes there.

Coke earned his role and some trust by how he pitched in Sept last year.

Gardner WON the job out of spring training

Frankie played because for most of the time it was either him or Kevin Cash.

            • Moshe Mandel says:

Right- they played because there was a hole or they earned it- Melancon has not earned it, and lately there have been few openings for him. He should have been used tonight, but prior to that I really had no issues with Girardi’s bullpen usage.

        • A.D. says:

There’s really no basis that Girardi doesn’t use young players.

          • Mikebk says:

i didnt say he didnt use young players. i said he only uses players he trusts and it is tough to earn trust when u dont get any work.

            • Crab Dribble Ointment says:

You mean like every other major league manager whose sole directive is to win baseball games?

              YEAH! WHAT AN ASS!

        • Jamal G. says:

Sigh. Melky Cabrera since June 19th (and not including today’s two-hit effort that came with a double): .287/.376/.437

Yeah, Joe Girardi would definitely be an idiot for playing that guy over a kid that’s never came to the plate in a Major League game.

  5. JMK says:

Anyone know what Adam Warren projects to be?

  6. Mikebk says:

warren keeps pumping out the good performances.
nice to lare pitch well after the move up.
does have medchill actually have some speed, say 10-15 base speed?

  7. A.D. says:

Looks like Adam Warren has proven that hes a vet college pitcher

  8. You guys amuse me. Montero zomg bust!!!11!!

  9. Accent Shallow says:

Nice to see no walks from Whelan. He’s a guy who could definitely factor into bullpen plans soon.

Pope got hammered? Clearly it’s because Montero calls a lousy game. ;)

  10. pollo says:

Looks like mah boi Trenton is holdin it down.

  11. Drew says:

Damn Russo has been on a tear this past week. I’d love for him to be on this roster.

Mike, is Russo fast? PR late in games, maybe a stolen base here and there?

    • 27 this year says:

I think Russo is developing to be a super utility guy as well.

      • Drew says:

He’s been projected as that for the past few years. He’s only had like 4 games at SS though. I think he can be a better hitter than a super util guy but we won’t know until we try.

      • AndrewYF says:

They should train him to be first base coach, and a bullpen catcher. I hear they’re also giving Pena reps at bat boy.

  12. Tony says:

Oh shit, good thing they didn’t consider bringing a slumping Austin Jackson up!

  13. Miles Roche says:

Anybody care to explain what Mark Melancon did to get treated like this? Banged Joe G.’s wife, perhaps???
    Freaking unbelievable!!!
    17. FREAKING. GAMES!!!

    • A.D. says:

Not pitch well when he came up, and then sit around in tight games.

      • Miles Roche says:

Then guess what — send the guy back down to SWB, so that he can at least get into some games!
This guy is rotting in the bullpen, for crying out loud!

    • Technically, it’s 13 freaking games, not 17. That 17 day span includes the All-Star Break.

You can’t have him pitch in games on scheduled off days.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Well, It makes sense as we need to win games and he hasn’t exactly been good in the short time he’s been here (although that is WAAAY to small of a sample size). I guess he could have used him today but D-rob was already in the game and had used just 4 pitches to get Pena in the 8th.

      • Miles Roche says:

Yeah, but it irked me when Girardi didn’t bring in Melancon instead of Albie to start the 8th, when the Yankees had a 6-run lead, which should have been enough run-support to allow Melancon to do his thing. And if he faltered, you could have then brought in Albaladejo or D-Rob.

  14. Old Man Gammons on BBTN: “He [Beckett] and Lester are probably the best 1-2 combo in all of baseball, along with Sabathia and Burnett.”

Do you think any of the producers have to nudge the guys and remind them that there’s 28 other teams besides the Yankees and the Sox?

    Verlander-Jackson, Felix-Bedard, Lincecum-Cain, Jurjjens-Vazquez, and Carpenter-Wainwright all say hello.

  15. Jamal G. says:

For all those unnecessarily whining about the use of the 13th man on the pitching staff, Mark Melancon, here, read this:

Girardi said they were giving Hughes, Aceves, Coke and Bruney the game off, so they held out Melancon as the last backup pitcher.

  16. nycornerstone says:

yanks just traded melky and wang for zitto and rowan

  17. “Eric Wordekemper: 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 5-5 GB/FB – 30 of 43 pitches were strikes (69.8%) … just up from AA because Jason Johnson is back on the DL

Nope. We’re showcasing him for the Wordekemper for Halladay and Wells trade.

  18. Zack Kroenke… seem like a good mid-level prospect to use for a Justin Duchsherer/Ian Snell acquisition?

  19. Mike Pop says:

Kanekoa Texeira seems like he dominates every time out.

  20. pollo says:

Johnny Damon was asked whether Burnett looks like the pitcher the Yankees faced last season when he was with Toronto.

“Absolutely,” he said. “He’s one of those guys you dream about at night, you know? Not in a good way, in a bad way.”

    Pause.

  21. cuponoodles says:

How does Kroenke profile on the ML level? Seems like he’s dominating in AAA to me…

  22. Andy says:

The real shame of the Melancon thing is that they brought up Albie in the first place. Please, we have 96 releivers on the roster already, with guys not getting work. If AJax or Pena or even useless Shelley Duncan was up, you wouldn’t have this issue…
