Game 99 Spillover Thread
By Mike AxisaRobbie Cano hit that homer because he wanted to jog around the bases. Because, you know, he’s so lazy.

lol has anyone seen the commercial for the “Fat Bachelor?” Looks like gold.
gold plated shite maybe.
I will second that.
Nick Swisher only hit that home run so he could jog around the bases and not risk making another boneheaded baserunning play.
Nick Swisher is a 4 outcome hitter. Walk, Home run, Strikeout and Baserunning Error.
He will get dogged for looking at the homerun ball for second.
I love that we’ve left 8 men on base by going 1 for 7 with RISP but we are still up by 5.
A-Rod didn’t hit a home run because he wants to save his hip durability tonight for Kate.
good god these yankees are something else
what? like 6 losses since that game in atlanta?
21-6 in their last 27
So we’ll see Melancon, Albaladejo, and Robertson, or use whoever is gonna be send down to Scranton for an outfielder, Burnett is at 94 pitches right now
come on, AJ–four K inning here
that would top off the game
and my fantasy team…
mine as well.
I don’t think many people here would admit to wanting Lowe and not wanting Burnett this past winter.
Was there anyone???
Really? I wanted Burnett but there was def. a legit argument for Lowe.
Mike
Ha!
I wanted Ben Sheets…
I did it, and I’ll admit to it.
Again, for the billionth time, it’s way too soon to know who’s right and who’s wrong on that one. I love the way AJ is pitching, but I’m still scared about him getting hurt again. We have a lot of money tied up in him.
I thought Burnett/Lowe was lose/lose long term, since they both have their issues.
For 2009, I’d have taken Burnett, and I feel good about that.
Exactly.
I advocated for Lowe as the lesser of two long-term-risk evils.
Yes there was a legit argument for Lowe. We’re about 15% of the way thru AJ’s contract. Let’s not consider it a great signing yet. Hell, Matt Clement made the AS team for the Sox his first year, let’s say they weren’t happy with that one.
That was a GREAT play by Tex keeping that ball from going to RF.
Hey Phil Hughes is coming to a mall near me to sign autographs. You think his autograph will be worth more than $40 ?
Ahhh, come on. He’s making MLB minimum, which is a paltry $407,650 for half a year of work. Give the poor kid a few sheckles.
I’ve never seen the dropped strike 3 and still make it to first play until I met AJ Burnett. Can we go for the ever elusive 4-strikeout inning?
It’s the Burnett-Posada battery special!
Freakin’ Posada.
yyyyyyep.
Is anyone else not getting any announcing, just game sounds?
Not going to lie, I am kind of enjoying it.
Oh that made me very sad.
Jorge’s passed ball is compounding here.
At least that one was actually called a PB, usually they’re charged as WP to the pitcher.
damn what a great hit and run
Come on, AJ.
Woo!
ah damn, we need to get out of this guys.
Is it me does JoPo allow a passed ball evertime (even though its classified as WP mostly)?
AJ velocity down to 91-92 now. He’s pitched a great game so far but we’ve got to pull him soon.
next inning.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Robbie already met his base running quota with his triple, it’s all walks, outs and HR’s from now until Wednesday.
grrrrrreat! Double play
Is that you, Tony?
huge DP there.
That’s what she said!
That’s what she said, twice!
Fixed that for you.
…turns out she’s nasty and I don’t want to associate with her anymore
Ok, I’ll take DP and giving up a run.
That’s about the best outcome you can hope for from “In play, run(s)”
In play, run(s)
…f***
…s***
…*******************
Double Play!
Heh I had a similar reaction
Seriously, Gameday audio is a great investment if your just watching games on Gameday.
mlb.tv is even better
Phew!!!
I’ll take that run for the DP
What a job by Burnett. Major applause.
standing O for AJ burnett
Great pitching by AJ today
:Standing Ovation:
Robbie has a very realistic chance at a cycle.
not anymore he doesn’t
Still got 2 innings to pull it out.
BURNETT!
There’s no other pitcher in our rotation that I feel as confident in when he’s faced with a jam.
yea him and CC
I’m regaining confidence in Joba after his last couple starts
melancon or robertson for the 7th
probably for the 9th. 4 run lead doesnt give off the same sense of security as a 5-run lead so I doubt Joe puts them in.
nice walk godzilla
wow posada is effing slow
Posada AGAIN with the DP
Would that have been a DP for any two but Matsui and Posada?
haha thats funny
In plays out(s)
Please no Dp…Please no Dp…Please no Dp
Damn it
Cano with 2 4-pitch walks?
Robbie with another 4-pitch walk?!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 WALKS FOR CANO??? I THINK SOMEONE JUST MADE HELL FREEZE
I would wager that close to 50% of Cano’s walks are on 4-0 counts
seems like it doesnt it? any way to find out?
11 of 19 coming into tonight.
if you’re a pitching coach what do you say to someone who walks cano on 4 pitches?
You’re fired?
Recommend to the GM that he DFA the pitcher?
I’m speechless…
BTW, check out Robbie’s line. All 2′s except under SO or LOB. in which he has zeros. Awesome!
eerie!
A second walk for Robbie? Woo!
OMG Cano walks twice in a game!!!
How is this possible?
Now the pirates are going to the World Series.
Chris Walken
its will ferrell you idiot
my bad kay you arent an idiot
i thought he was was talking about the “i have a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell”
Christopher Walken
http://www.clamshare.com/video.....wbell.html
will was in the skit.
Christopher Walken > everyone else
He puts his pants on one leg at a time..but once they’re on, he makes gold records.
Aceves time? I know Hughes will sit today…
It looked like AJ was coming back out there
Sweet, he got the first guy out too. Alby warming up…… crap.
You couldn’t really tell looking at his numbers from yesterday, but if you saw Phil pitch (I was at the game) he looked like he was laboring the entire time. Fell behind hitters, looked a little tired, and just never seemed comfortable out there.
His results were still great, especially with the assist from Bruney and Mo, but he looked like he needed a few days off to me.
yea, 40 pitches in 1.1 IP would back your observation up.
There you go. He struck a few guys out and didn’t give up any runs, but it was a struggle.
Jeter has no range
Good positioning by Jeter.
FWIW, for all you guys cooking up harebrained schemes to trade for Roy Halladay on the cheap:
The three least tradeable players in all of Major League Baseball, according to ESPN’s David Schoenfield (in order, emphasis mine):
1) Barry Zito
2) VERNON WELLS
3) Alex Rodriguez
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....BHeadlines
Yea, when I saw that, I though Vernon should be 1st on the list.
doesnt matter what number he is the write up makes him even worse than we make him.
true
There is 0% chance the Yankees take on Well’s salary in order to avoid giving up good prospects…. That’s 100 million dollars people… are you saying our prospects are worth that much… Um as good as Montero, Hughes, and Joba are, I doubt it.
Presumably Toronto would have to pick up a large portion (30%?) of Wells’ deal for any deal to be considered. If the Yankees pay Wells 60-70M (not considered Lux tax) over 5 years and he returns 40M of production then IMO it would be worth keeping Montero for example who is bound to be worth Tens of Millions.
Let me add some to this list… Kei Igawa and Igawa Kei
My favorite is when someone says we should give up Montero+ for Halladay/Wells.
Wild. If the Yankees were taking on Wells, the best player I’d give up would be Cody Arbiso or someone like that.
Cody Arbiso!?!?!?? WHAT ARE YOU, FUCKIN NUTS?
They get Carmen Angelini and they’ll like it.
Doc+Wells for a box of cannoli. No gun.
Ok, they van rub on NICK SWISHER after hitting from both sides.
For Halladay and Wells together, you get Eric Wordekemper. That’s my final offer.
jeter looks like 2001 jeter
never expected to see jeter come into the frame on that one.
me neither
Dear Kay,
Jeter was playing him up the middle fool.
Love Singelton
Jeter’s range makes me happy in my swimsuit area.
That’s what SHE said!
I love Alex Rodriguez’s arm and Mark Teixiera’s glove.
holy shit a-rod with the incredible play
Indians dealt Garko to the Giants for Scott Barnes and a ptbnl.
Wooo! Hot Stove news! Love it.
Garko should help them. kid they gave up was their 9th best prospect according to BA before the year. had a good year as a 22 year old lefty in High A.
Great job by AJ once again
loev quick 7th innings from your starter
Heckuva job by AJ.
I’ll give even a better standing ovation for AJ now!
i actually clapped in front of my tv
wow i was shocked burnett went 7
I love this team.
Mo loves this team.
Jesus looks out for this team from afar.
There’s no stopping them.
Dont jynx. Please take this back for after the game!
Hey, I never specified.
I could be, er, talking about the Dodgers. Or some other team.
Jinxes are for Red Sox fans.
We’re better than this, people.
Gameday has the rays run as unearned since when does a passed ball make runs unearned?
Since it was a strikeout and he shouldn’t have been allowed to first.
It always is. It’s like an error on the catcher.
Wasn’t it a throwing error?
whoops, memory fail, that was like the 2nd inning.
since forever? A PB isn’t the pitchers fault, wild pitches are. Jorge allowed a guy to get on even though struck out and he ended up scoring.
Isn’t Albaladejo the guy who walks the first hitter he faces every time out?
That was Veras
don’t you ever speak his name. I’d nearly forgotten him.
and DRob
or it could be D-rob too I guess. Albie had walked plenty of guys early in the season too when the whole pen was struggling and overused.
evan almighty…
good numbers? Dude’s got like a 1.5 whip
1.380–not THAT bad, but not very good either
man balfour made jete his beetch on those first 2 pitches
Jeter gets the last laugh though
nice job jeter
Jete now number 66 on the all time hits list.
when jeter hits like that, it still amazes me.
infield in always works against us
“Yeah I thought that was Shouse” So WTF did you say it was Choate.
man too bad that play at home wasn’t closer
Birthday present from A-Rod to the rest of the team…so unclutch
uch, just padding his stats
Mark Melancon is begging to pitch today
Who?
A-ROD WITH A HUUUUUUGE BOMB OFF THE TOP OF THE WALL!
GO GET EM A-ROD!
mm i love when alex pads his stats
unclutch or not…that double was needed for A-rod…maybe now he breaks out of his mini-slump and maybe now Melancon gets some work
that was needed for the team. 2 run double is big with two outs
All of Hideki’s outs have been hit well today, I think.
Gross had to jump on that liner to right – that was scalded. Good sign for Godzilla
Almost an A-bomb for ARod – wonder if Kate’s in Tampa
she is
8th inning – johnny appleseed?
9th- mark melancon (please) or robertson
8th inning- Alby, Robertson
9th inning- Melancon, Bruney, Cokey, Acey, Mo for the last out with a 5 run lead and 2 men on base.
Dear Rays station:
You can stop showing Kate Hudson now, kthx.
Dear Rays station:
Ignore Trish. Thanks.
You know, I really appreciate the way YES doesn’t exploit relationships. Like when Minka was hanging with the Jeters during a game but none of the announcers made any fuss over that.
Maybe they should. it is news worthy.
No it isn’t and no they shouldn’t.
Minka’s cuter too.
Much. Kate Hudson is merely solidly above average.
But an upgrade over Madonna.
Shit, Ru Paul is practically upgrade over Madonna. She’s a worn leather handbag.
Someone please send Melancon down to AAA to get work in, he hasn’t pitched in a little more than 2 weeks…
why is melancon even here if albie who just got called up and may go right back to scranton is being put in over him in a 6 run game and melancon hasnt pitched in 2 weeks.
I can has Melancon in the 9th? PLEASE!
Joe Girardi officialy hates Melancon
is it pronounced “melanson” or “Mela-kon”
1st.
the first one
me-lak-on
Albie in the 8th Melancon in the 9th?
Mark M. needs some work. it’s been SEVENTEEN days!!! 17, 17, 17. one more time. 17.
Utterly ridiculous. I would think he pitches the ninth, though.
Melancon is the new Chris Britton
“Better check he’s not wearing a wire.”
Has Albie always thrown 91-92? I though I saw him last April (or this April?) he was 94-96
i’m glad people now see my frustrations with girardi over the under usage of melancon. i just don’t get it. you’d think a 7 run lead going into the 8th would be enough for him just get some goddamn work….that’s 14 days he could have thrown/developed for scranton.
thanks for shedding light on the situation, we were all clueless before you graced us with your knowledge of melancon’s lack of use
i’m clarifying because just a few days ago i mentioned it in a game thread and got fucking crucified. no need to be a goddamn asshole about it.
Must have been Lanny, because most everyone here wants Marky Mark in there.
which game was it? what was teh score/situation?
6 run lead. It’s also “14″ days in which he’s been under the tutelage of the greatest closer of all time. It’s not all bad.
not all bad? if you consider not throwing the damn baseball while albaladejo walked a guy, and gave up a double and 2 runs when he could have at least warmed up..
So u’d bring Mel into the game now that it’s a HR away from a 1 run game? Look, I don’t understand not ever using him either but I’m just trying to find a positive.
i’m saying albaladejo should have never been in the game to begin with.
everyone has always said that. I like Joe a lot, but he is showing a slight Torre like bullpen skill this year.
What has Melancon done to deserve work? He should be in Scranton.
A 7-1 lead might be a good chance to give him a chance. Short leash, but a chance.
Agreed he should be in Scranton if he’s just going to rot, though.
wow that was a lucky ass hit
well that sucked
Albaladejo is sooooooo bad.
cmon Albie…no more runs, we need Melancon!
I really wish he would let Melancon pitch.
and now mo has to get up…GIRARDI.
WHY THE HELL IS MARIANO WARMING UP?
Albaledejo misses Scranton.
don’t use mo!
…Mo?
Are you kidding me?
Are you kidding me? I’m not a Girardi basher but this is bull. Mariano?
Like Bruney said, Albie is just trying to get Mo the save so he can smash KRods record
Albada-not-gonna-work-here-anymore if he keeps this up.
ugh
alby sucks hard
Everything was up, that’s why Girardi was so fidgety to get him out of there.
ok, time to get him out of there
let bruney come in and get 1 out. or D-Rob and Bruney the 9th.
Dont make mo pitch tonight.
The Yanks have really been hurt this game by Posada’s weak thowing arm. Get Molina and his .200 bat out there, atleast he can throw someone out. Posada can DH and that’ll keep the slumping Matsui on the bench because no one breaks out of slumps. Oh and I just love seeing two blackholes in the lineup when Molina starts.
So his offense means nothing anymore? I guess Burnett did this all on his own right?
I think he was being sarcastic.
Bingo.
Yeah, we don’t stand a chance with Posada.
/sarcasm
GET HIS ASS OUT OF THERE
Kinda ridiculous that up 5 in the 8th and you need to get Mo up.
Albie doesnt belong in the majors.
which is why he hasnt been, yet girardi trusted him more than D-Rob or Melancon in a 6 run game. at least d-rob pitched a couple times recently but Mark hasnt pitched since before the break. what a joke.
agreed. He is very bad. He walks the first batter he faces almost every time. That was ball 3 for the out he got coming into this game. He is just plain bad. You are asking for trouble when you bring him in.
I saw this coming the moment they decided to warm alby up.
lol, i knew he’d warm up Mo. Girardi will use 7 relievers to get out of this game.
D-Rob, don’t walk the bases loaded plz
This is why I want to see Phil stay in the bullpen. If you take him out of there, drastically weakens the pen. Don’t trust anyone after Mo and Ace. Coke even makes me uneasy in a big spot.
this has nothing to do with Hughes. girardi shouldnt have brought albie in at all. he has d-rob and melancon who have been underworked to get outs in a 6 run game.
You bring albie in bc it is a 6 run lead and if he can get through it, you save the bullpen for a full day bc albie is getting sent down again in short order
could not agree more at least for this season
Coke even makes me uneasy in a big spot.
Phil Coke, High Leverage situations, 2009:
.185/.246/.389 against
I hate Girardi at the moment…
enough of albejabldieo!
Oh Oh, DROB is Baaaaaaad when coming in with Runners on
Yep – Mo better warm up quick because this 3rd out aint comin easy.
Thanks a lot Albie! If Melancon isnt going to get work with a 6 run lead, then why have him here?
Are you a good David Robertson, or a bad David Robertson?
A good one! Yaaayyy!
All of you Hughes to the rotation guys:
Remember the days when the bullpen sucked? I really do understand your point(s) about wanting Hughes as a starter. But all I am saying is that without Hughes in the pen, the Bullpen SUCKS. Is that really what we want? The end of this game is a glimpse back into the first third of the season…
Unfortunately, it is soooo true that the bullpen sucks without Hughes in it. Maybe they would be better if the back end guys would get more pitching opportunities than once every 10 games.
That’s why they have to get Melancon some friggin work, so he can get comfortable at the MLB level and start to live up to his potential role…
Ehh, Albaladejo is the last-second to last pitcher in the pen. The fire was put out by Robertson, who’s below Mo, Hughes, Aceves, Bruney, and Coke in the pecking order.
While putting Hughes in the rotation would weaken the pen, it’d hardly destroy it, especially if either Melancon or Robertson can step up.
It also wouldn’t surprise me to see Cashman add another RP.
But all I am saying is that without Hughes in the pen, the Bullpen SUCKS. Is that really what we want?
No, nobody wants that. If you’re giving me the choice between a crappy bullpen or a crappy 5th starter, though, I’ll take a crappy bullpen. Because having 5 great starters is worth having a weakened, less rock-solid bullpen.
Life is full of hard choices.
anyone see minaya’s press conference? he cant even form intelligible thought processes
He’s still reeling from his pickup of Francoeur
Eh… I smell a home run.
Pena acting like a jackarse. He should be tossed.
oh wow what a sucky first strike call
throw him out!
Ha, Maddon “That’s bullshit”
I came on here to bitch about Girardi bringing in Albalasucko instead of Melancon, who NEEDS WORK.
And I found the same bitching — right there with ya’all.
Hope to see Melancon in the ninth…
But Melancon should have gotten work the other day in the blowout, and today at 7-1. That’s how Joba started.
Because when Melancon gets rolling, he has the potential to be huge for this pen…
The Mets have a pinch-hit grand slam.
noooooooooooooooooooooo. Why wont they just fade away =(
When did they sign Manny?
If we strike out Pena here on a blown call I bet he has a roid attack and punches the umpire.
That pitch was nasty. Looks like the slider R.Johnson or J.Lester throws… but from a righty. Pwnge. Robertson working his way up the food chain.
And jumped back down the ladder again.
boy pena makes me nervous
wtf Kay “Heeeee fouls it back”
I think he’s watching it from above, so it looked like a strikeout.
That may be it, I just found it funny though.
I am so sick of Kay’s preemptive calls.
“Heee str—oh wait, it’s fouled over to left field.”
Attaboy, Robertson!
I can has Melancon for the 9th?
OH NO! maybe ‘Zach’ will be a condescending ass again because you mentioned his name!!
no but dont act like you’re the one who started this and everyone else is lucky to be following you
yeah DRob!
DAVID FUCKING ROBERTSON
Nice D-rob! With a 4 run lead, I hope Melancon can work the 9th with their bottom of order coming up. Too bad Mo had to get warmed up.
D-Rob is nastay.
i love how Girardi throwing a dude who should still be in AAA is proof that the pen sucks if Hughes wasnt in it. Did i miss Coke, Bruney and Ace all pitching tonight?
Agreed. And Marte is getting close.
well, how good are most teams’ mop-up guys? if they were better, they wouldn’t be mopping up
Your crystal ball is great. First people complain that Mel didn’t come in who, we all admit should be rusty, now we complain that Brune Ace and Coke got a day off? I don’t get it.
:headsmack:
You absolutely, 100%, missed his point.
Nah Mike asked if Bruney Ace or Coke pitched tonight(implying there were better options). Correct me if I’m wrong.
not only that a mop up AAA guy gives up 2 runs and it proves we suck cause hughes wasnt available.
I’m sorry I just totally disagree. Yeah we probably need Hughes down there unless we pick up someone else but we don’t suck. Coke Mo Ace and Bruney on the come up.
Well Bruney hasn’t been pitching well for a while. And the point is after Coke and Mo, the scrubs and mop-up guys would be pitching in important late inning situations.
This might sound like a naive question. Okay it is a naive question but can’t Melancon ask to be sent back to Scranton if he’s not going to be used. Not in a nasty way but in an “I need the work and Scranton needs me” way.
He’s making $400k a year while he’s in the majors. I imagine he’ll sit on the bench for the rest of the year if they want him to.
At this stage of his career, is it really about money or is it about wilting on the vine? I’m just wondering if there is anyone he can talk to about either getting work here or going back to Scranton. He does need to keep developing.
If I were in his position, I’d take the money, and be happy. Presumably, he’s also throwing on the side, under Eiland (and Mariano’s?) tutelage.
Didn’t you see him Phil and Mo chillin talking in the BP yesterday? I’m sure he’s happy sitting next to those guys.
now maybe Mo can sit down?
wow definitely wasn’t supposed to be posted here. whoops.
We want Melancon, we want Melancon….
That was huge for Robertson. 37 K’s in 25 and 2/3 innings. Hopefully he can use that outing as a stepping stone. People forget how young he is and expect him to come in and be shut down. That takes time. Maybe that’ll shut up the haters for a little while.
the only hating is when he walks so many guys and while we all love the K there it doesnt mask his control issues
exactly. 1 K isnt going to shut us up
He just walks too many for my taste. 16 in 25 innings.
Ken Singleton just reminded us all that people in Florida are old.
In Tampa, yeah. In Miami not so much.
I know so many New Yorkers in Florida and I hate the place. I don’t get it.
Steve H: tonight we celebrate.
We always celebrate Swish’s greatness. He simply refuses to hit at home as he does not want to enhance YS III’s reputation as a bandbox. If he chose to, he’d have about 60 HR’s by now, just at home.
SWISHA HOUSE WITH THE SECOND BOOOOMMMMBBB!!!
nice catch by that fan
A dive and a sno-cone
Swish heating up… and Melky with the double. Tack on another, and we might get to rest Mo for sure
best 4th OF in the game
thanks for shedding light on the situation, we were all clueless before you graced us with your knowledge of Swisher’s status as the best 4th OF in the game
/(sort of different)
see i was joking and making fun of those who say hes only a 4th OF, so yes different situations
looks like Cano’s back to his 2nd half MVP form again.
The Swish!
is girardi going to get mo up again now that its 11-4?
Swisha! Again! Why cant he hit like this at home? It is TEH BANDBOX
Swisher is so amazing on the road.
John Sterling just said “Swish-a-licious.” Horrible.
are you new to the radio?
It’s been a WHILE since Swisher hit a home run
…except for earlier tonight, which I didn’t hear
22 games and 79 PA’s (heading into tonight), to be exact.
that was an amazing catch by the fan
Good Melky is good.
tack ons are fun for everyone yay more please
let D-Rob finish it or Melancon work…dont really care. nice for d-rob to get a save.
“Not at all…”
That’s because no one wants you there, Michael.
3 more please.
AND HE DOES IT FOR ME! I LOVE YOU JOHNNY! ALL BATTERS NOW HAVE A HIT… sorry about the caps
SWISH
HELL YEAAA!!!
The Yankees are good at baseball.
sucky parts of Yankee bullpen >>>>>>> sucky parts of Tampa’s pen
JOHNNY DAMON!!!
A JOHNNY ROCKET!
Nice intentional walk there.
I was gonna say that Shouse looks like he’d be rough on lefties… I guess not
0 excuse for melancon to not pitch today…shit swisher could even pitch today
#200 for Damon!
Yeah I think Mo can relax
Well, that should do it.
Melk against lefties (SSS):
104 AB’s, .295/.380/.489. Wow.
Probably an anomaly (against his career split), but wow.
Congrats, Johnny!
johnny boy
Can Melancon protect an 8 run lead?
Finally Damon hits a HR
If Marky Mark don’t come in now….
Picking up Willingham for my fantasy team, yesterday, is kinda paying off.
Those are video game numbers tonight
Smart move walking Jeter.
I guess Girardi wants Robertson to get his 1st career save.
just send Melancon down already
What did Melancon do to Girardi?
So did Mark Melancon kick Joe Girardi’s dog or something?
Yes no it needs surgery
I feel empty inside without Melancon pitching
Well at least he didn’t walk the leadoff hitter.
well DROB should be out now.
let robertson stay there and take the runs
I say let him take a huge beating. Maybe he will learn something.
Yeah, like how to take a beating.
I’m with you in the abstract, but Melancon needs the work. Seriously.
Alright, can I please see Melancon. It’s a sign!
Pat Burrell is quite unimpressed by David Robertson.
Bruney?
OK, enough Robertson – give us Melancon!
I don’t get it. Melancon needs work and it’s a blowout. Robertson has now pitched threee times in four games. It was the perfect situation to get Melancon an inning.
Girardi leaves me baffled sometimes.
Girardi will soon get Mo warming up again.
Maybe, since Melancon is so damn pasty white, Girardi literally can’t see him and doesn’t know to put him in the game.
Yeah, but K.C Jones always found Larry Bird to put him in the game…
He never saw Bird though, just looked for the floating green 33 and knew Larry would be there.
Maybe he needs to call Francona and figure out how he does it with Bay.
Nah, Bay’s not white, he’s Canadian.
/RedSoxSpin’d
Pete Abraham better ask Girardi where the hell Melancon is after the game.
So, they brought Albaladejo up because they needed a reliever.
And Melancon is still riding the pine.
I REALLY hope they have a good reason for this. The roster spot is too important to waste a guy.
Not only wasting the roster spot, but it’s not like Melancon is some 35 year old. Just like it’s pointless to bring up A-Jax to ride the pine, it’s pointless to not use Melancon, though to a lesser extent. Still effing frustrating.
Someone has to be the 25th man. Ask Tomko.
Melancon might have a future in the organization. Tomko didn’t.
Are you just playing devil’s advocate? You’re not good at it.
right now he’s the last guy in teh bullpen. since the break and before tonight there has been exactly 1 game that wasnt decided by 3 runs or less, and of that 1 game it was 1 inning, and DRob got that inning
thats playing devil advocate
Are you ever happy? You come on this site all the time and complain about someone.
I’m well aware that Tomko didn’t have a future with us, my point is that someone has to be the last option. When you get good starting pitching it is hard to get every single pen guy innings. IF you’re in a close game, which it has been as of late, are you going to pitch Melancon over Ace Hughes Coke or Bruney, if they’re all available? I wouldn’t.
Tomko’s the perfect 25th man, because he’s 36 and we literally don’t give a shit if he rusts away and deteriorates into ash.
Melancon has a future with the team, or at least we’d like him to.
So should we resign Tomko or have Joe go out of his way in close games to get a rookie innings? Look it’s not you, but so many people complained that Tomko was on the team and he sucked when he came in once every two weeks. We released Tomko and now we have a young guy in that role, people complain. I thought I was used to the incessant complaining but I guess I’m not.
No, we shouldn’t resign Tomko. But, if the last man in the pen is going to pitch this infrequently, we should either:
A) move Melancon back to Scranton so he can get work and put someone we care about less in this spot, like Edwar, or
B) reorder the pecking chart so that Melancon isn’t the last man in the pen and Albaladejo is, or
C) roll with a smaller bullpen and a larger bench.
I agree with A.
B is moot because either Mel or Albie will be sent down, maybe both when Marte is back and we have someone to fill in for Grit.
C would be excellent, especially with the starting pitching that we’ve been getting.
The worst part is that his service time clock is ticking…
Winning 22 of the past 28 just doesn’t do it for you, huh?

I like the Tampa Bay approach to hitting in the 9th. Obviously aside from Burrell they just look to stick the bat slowly into the zone and slap the ball all over the place. Do we ever do that?
Look, all of us want to get Melancon innings here or in Scranton. Joe’s concern is winning. As long as he’s doing so, stop whining.
If it’s not the bullpen it’s the lineup. If it’s not the lineup it’s Ransom. If it wasn’t Ransom it was Tomko. Jeez We’re about to be 23 games over.
You can’t use Melancon in an 11-3 ballgame because you’re afraid of losing?
The argument was to go to him at 7-1. Once Robertson was in the game in that spot, you need to give him more than one batter.
Perhaps the thinking is that you just had a pitcher throw 4 pitches, he’s already up and loose, why take him out of the game now. Why use three relievers when you only need two? You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.
And Robertson is pitching his third game in four days. Perfect opportunity to give an inning to Melancon, not over-work Robertson and get out with a win.
It was 7-1.
If Joe took D-Rob out after one batter (11-3) and Mel struggled, we would have had to use another arm.
Our concern is winning too. That’s why we’re clamoring for Melancon to get work: because he needs the innings to get sharp and improve so he can start contributing to the club.
Exactly. Melancon isn’t a mop-up man long term, so to not use him now in mop-up situations is crazy if you’re not ready to trust him in tight spots.
I see your concern but I see a guy with 5 major league innings, his contribution is not essential to us winning, imo. Would it be nice? Yes obviously. Would I rather see him over Albie? Yes. Am I going to consistently complain about Joe not putting him in? No.
then dont fucking waste him on the bench. let him pitch in AAA and waste the Albies of the world who arent going to get better and hopefully help us in the future.
Word. I don’t disagree with that. People just have to accept that someone is going to be the odd man out. If people didn’t accept that with Tomko, are they going to accept that with Albie?
For the record, since I’m one of the ones advocating for Melancon here, I was never clamoring for Tomko to be cut. I was fine with him wasting away at the end of the pen in the Latroy Hawkins Zone.
His contribution isn’t essential to us now… but it will be in the future.
We have a business model that requires us to win both now AND later. That means we need to take advantage of pretty much every single opportunity to develop players.
Every non-essential inning should be used to make young pitchers better.
I agree with that.
We all wanted and hoped Mel would be lights out since he came up. When he first got here, he wasn’t himself. He was walking people and couldn’t hit the glove like he did in the minors.
I want him to get regular innings. I think he’ll be a solid pitcher no matter where he is, in time.
My whole beef is that people complain about something else every night..
My whole beef is that people complain about something else every night..
True, it’s kinda annoying. It’s different people often, though, so you can’t really fault everyone for being upset about different things collectively.
Amen. Thank you.

I don’t think anyone is upset that we’re about to be 23 games over. This doesn’t mean that criticisms can’t be had. Wasting a spot and potentially hindering development is certainly a valid issue to bring up.
NICE CATCH JOHNNY DAMON!
WHAT AN AWESOME ASSKICKING WIN!
You know I really feel this team is something special.
This is the best Yankee team I’ve seen since the championship run. Other teams would go on good runs, even in Torre’s last year they were something like 51-24 in the second half when Hughes and Joba showed up. But this team has played .500 ball at times or went on stretches where they are just amazing and almost unbeatable. They’ve done both of those at least twice already, and you feel like there’s still a lot more good baseball coming. Especially since AJ and CC are typically 2nd half pitchers.
Save #1 for d-rob!
With Waldman, Swish just gave credit to Kevin Long for fixing some kind of flaw in his swing. (Also said that AJ was the star of the game)
“Our chemistry is just amazing,it’s the best since I’ve been here and the best since I’ve been playing Baseball.”

“Joe Girardi is really having problems with the veterans.”

Good win, Yankees.
Split the next 2 with the Rays and the Yanks will be 8 games ahead with about 60 games left. Getting the division crown is pretty big though as it means avoiding the Angels in the 1st round.
I’ll take CC and AJ each pitching twice in a short series over any team in baseball
No shit bro. I looked at the matchups for the series, saw AJ, CC and JOba. All with ERA’s under 4. It’s a beautiful thing.
**Imagine if Wanger was right!
Man Swishers first HR was absolutely smashed.
