Heh, I would think so. As I’m sure you found out through one of the many snarky responses you received (out of love, mind you) its an internet meme popular amongst those who spend waaay too much time in front of the computer.
gxpanos says:
…And it looks to me like Fred Lynn should have won the MVP in ‘79.
Jose says:
Fred Lynn put up a league leading 176 OPS+ that year… In Centerfield.
Fred Lynn put up a .333/.423/.637 (1.059) in 622 PA with 39 HR, 122 RBI, and 116 R playing CF for the Red Sox.
Don Baylor put up a .296/.371/.530 (.901) in 722 PA with 36 HR, 139 RBI, and 120 R playing LF/RF/DH for the Angels.
He lead the league in Runs and RBI (because he played in all 162 games and Lynn only played in 147) and had 22 stolen bases. On the strength of that, they gave him the MVP over Lynn even though Lynn was way better and played a premium position.
Wait, it gets worse: Baylor got 20 first place votes. Lynn got… none.
Im not saying he should miss a game, but after that play at the plate he came up with an obvious limp and still has it today. I think he was even stretching it out in the dugout after the play. I was just curious to see if anyone else picked up on it.
It is really great to see Cano playing well this year. He has come out of the All Star break with his usual second half magic, and has been pretty consistant of late.
Girardi must reallly not trust Bruney or etc. The way its going, all relievers not named Hughes, Aceves, Coke, Mo will most likely be really bad in their first apperance due to rust.
Oh why in God’s sweet name is Phil Hughes warming? Joe Girardi needs to get Bruney/Robertson some work. I guess Melancon is just waiting for his bus ticket.
Yeah, I’m the one with this crazy idea that overuse destroys bullpen pitchers arms. Not sports medicine professionals and not years of actual evidence of pitchers being wrecked by overuse… it’s just me all by myself. Just me and my own crazy idea that has no basis in any reality other than my own. Nobody else has ever, ever insinuated this by me. You must by right because I’m all alone in this and that means I’m wrong.
No….they are not being overworked so you’re basis for an argument is irrelevant…this isn’t proctor or prior not even close to it…so the comparison makes no sense
If your going to complain about overuse, it would of been yesterday when Coke was used 3 days in a row. Hughes had 3 days of rest, so he should be ok to pitch today. Now, if you were complaining about the under use of the other relievers, you have a legitimate gripe.
Tomko was obviously a dick about it, but he has a bit of a point re: Girardi’s BP stubbornness. He just seems not to have any inclination to get Bruney and the others right.
I can’t knock Tomko getting DFA’d, but he did only give up 3 ER in his last 10.1 IP with the Yanks.
What I mean is lately, Girardi is becoming more like Torre, just going with the dominant arms and letting the other guys kind of atrophy. In the long run, an effective Bruney and DRob makes the team a lot better. So, it is about results, but sometimes long term results should trump short term results.
Good plan. So when does he start to do that? Tomorrow? Next week?
It’s a recipe for disaster to not give him any work and then expect him to be good. It’s three runs in the eight; let him start the inning, and bring in Hughes if he gets in trouble.
Double play! I’d really like to see D-rob or Melancon for the 9th but probably wont since its a save situation. Damn that wild pitch strikeout run is not good right now…Come on offense score one more freaking run please.
And that is why you can forget about Hughes being a starter in 2009. This pen has been lights out since he was inserted there and that certainly beats having him throw 100 pitches and 5 innings every 5th day. And God knows they dont want to touch Bruney or Melancon or Robertson in the 7-8th
Listen, and understand! Michael Kay is out there! He can’t be bargained with. He can’t be reasoned with. He doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
Andino must have tipped the pitch. We need to check all the surrounding Hooters tonight to see if ARod takes him out for dinner (and doesnt tip at all).
I’m wondering if Bruney is hurt again or if he’s in Giradi’s doghouse for some reason. His recent slump doesn’t justify not using him at all. The Yanks need to get him straightened out. Hell, Veras had more opportunities to pitch and he was much worse than Bruney.
This isn’t a video game, man. This is life. I’d rather let the 39 year old Mariano Rivera have a day of rest than have him add another meaningless number to his total.
He doesn’t need to prove anything anymore. He’s Mo.
Red Sox fall into second place, Nation responds accordingly
By ‘Duk
Sheesh. After the past couple championship seasons, you’d think that Red Sox fans would have found an easier way to weather the inevitable lulls that are inherent in every 162-game season.
But nope. Now that the Red Sox are back in second place for the first time since June 7 the Nation’s panic buttons are again being hit with the frequency of a dying man pressing the doctor’s office wait bell.
Let’s take a look at the couple of short descriptions we saw after Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to Texas (which in turn elevated the Yankees into top dog status):
The Soxaholix. “Welcome to the wild card race.”
John Henry. “Frustrating games.”
SawxBlog. “Second place Sox.”
OK, so maybe those excerpts sound a little more downtrodden than panicked, but it’s still worth a reminder from Surviving Grady’s Ellis Burks character that not all is lost. Yeah, the Red Sox haven’t had a multi-run inning in 40 straight frames, they’re being harassed by the Smoltzuzaka monster and have played .500 ball since June 24, when the club was a season-high 17 games over the water mark.
Still, Fenway fans should fret not. No team was destined to go wire-to-wire in the AL East this season and I’m saying that it’s guaranteed the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays are going to spend the rest of the season throwing each other in and out of the ring.
Plus, Boston just traded for Adam LaRoche, which should pretty much solve everything.
Can’t wait for Little Bill, is it? To say how he knew Burnett would be the answer to the Yankees problems in the recap thread. That boy has more faith in Burnett than me.
Ugh. I know those homers were no doubters, but they were the two most dangerous hitters they have and we still had a one run cushion with two outs and the bases empty.
I’m angry Joe put Mariano in. Even if you don’t trust Bruney to record one out with a two run lead, throw somebody else. Throw Melancon or Robertson. STOP PITCHING MARIANO RIVERA. Give the other guys a shot.
He threw just 6 pitches calm down. These people are athletes who are paid to play. So why rest Mo instead of letting him throw 103 of an inning. Dude clam down
Yeah, but he had to warm up (game style, not side style) and then pitch. Whether he throws 6 pitches or 20 pitches, he needs days off and, lately, he hasn’t been getting many.
This showed that bruney still has some major rust on him but hes not far off. Going to take a lot now to trust him in a big spot. Hes just got to earn that back thru performance. A good Bruney would make this bullpen deadly.
For a win, this was a really frustrating game and did not make for a happy fan in the end. Now, if the offense could really beat out a nice amount of runs for the As series while our pitching holds down the fort I’ll feel better of course. Because we’ll see the unused arms come out and get some of the rust off.
But if the games continue to be tight, Joe’s going to have to make better decisions than those a layfan could make in their sleep.
Meanwhile, Tomko packs his bags while grumbling, “See? See! I am a prophet!”
Why exactly was it so frustrating for you? So Bruney comes in and poops the bed – that’s hardly enough reason for a game like this to be “really frustrating”.
It’s frustrating to see Joe overuse three bullpen arms while the others sit idle. No, it wouldn’t be frustrating if we hadn’t had 5 close games in a row but that’s been the case. However, even today with a longer lead Girardi went with Hughes and then didn’t allow Bruney to attempt the final out of the game in favor working Mo who has been in too many games following the break.
Am I happy we won the game? Hell yes. But it is frustrating to see Bruney given no room to work with and the other guys no work at all? Hell yes.
I’m certainly not happy with Bruney’s performance but if he’s ever going to be effective again for the Yanks he needs to be given some leeway.
“I can has Bruney?” – Mike – what does that mean?
catspeak
It’s Greek to me. No comprende!
It still makes no sense to me.
It’s code for: Brian Bruney must kill the Queen.

bahaha, you must be OLD.

Mike wants the Yanks to keep a big lead so Bruney can get in the game and we don’t have to worry if he IBSes the bed.
It’s amazing how internet speak can encapsulate so much with so few words.
It’s like modern Shakespeare, dammit.
So, I herd you guys leik mudkipz and Brian Bruney?

That’s Montero’d.
Bruney to the 8th!!!
Bruney in the 8th, Melancon for the 9th. (That is if AJ goes 7 strong)
A.J.’s changeup with a cameo.
SWISH!
Swisher gets another +1 right there.

Wait, it gets worse: Baylor got 20 first place votes. Lynn got… none.
Baseball writers are dumb.
The worst part is that isn’t the first time or the last time something like that has occurred.
Ridic. And it wasnt even like Lynn came in 2nd. He came in…fourth.
Word.
Nevertheless Fred Lynn was a Fenway hitter rite?
You’ve got a point there. Still, though… that’s bananas.
Oh I agree that Lynn should of won the MVP.
Dang, Swish.
Swisher makes love to that wall like Abreu never could.
So True!

Perv…….in a good way lol.
Gotta hand it to Swisher after he made that mistake earlier. He has turned it on this game
Has anyone been talking about Jeter’s knee. After he got thrown out at the plate the other day, he has had a bit of a limp. Any word of that.
if he’s playing, probably not serious
Jeter doesn’t do injury. Plus it’s hard to justify missing a game when you’re out all night b… oh, hey Minka.
Im not saying he should miss a game, but after that play at the plate he came up with an obvious limp and still has it today. I think he was even stretching it out in the dugout after the play. I was just curious to see if anyone else picked up on it.
Damn, Tex was going to town on that bag of seeds.
It is really great to see Cano playing well this year. He has come out of the All Star break with his usual second half magic, and has been pretty consistant of late.
He and Jeter are both tops in the league in hits (NID).
No one wants to hear about your condiment hangups, Kay.
Where is Bruney? Did he ask for a leave of absence to go and kick K-Rod’s ass?
Ugh that was bull.
Holy shit Adam Jones can hit. How’d he keep that ball fair AND hit it hard?
Oh come on, get melancon in.
Hughes? Seriously? Hughes is warming up?
Okay, 2009 Joe Girardi, you’re starting to piss me off. I want 2008 Joe Girardi back.
Girardi must reallly not trust Bruney or etc. The way its going, all relievers not named Hughes, Aceves, Coke, Mo will most likely be really bad in their first apperance due to rust.
And all relievers named Hughes, Aceves, and Coke will be bad due to overuse.
Exactly.
Hughes hasn’t pitched in 2 days, if that’s any excuse for Girardi. Although Coke was used 3 days in a row, and Aceves 2 days
Maybe a long stint to stretch out some? Bah, what am I saying?!?
Oh why in God’s sweet name is Phil Hughes warming? Joe Girardi needs to get Bruney/Robertson some work. I guess Melancon is just waiting for his bus ticket.
That is also bullshit. Good job Jorge.
I feel like I say that every single game he catches now.
But he’s such a good defensive catcher.
3 run game, no way Girardi’s going to put Bruney in… LOL
Good block Jorge. Well done.
thats just an unfortunate turn of events huh
Can Mo go in the 9th??? (again)
I don’t know what I hate more: strikeout RBIs with 2 outs or 0-2 homers.
Is it just me or are both Yankee catchers in a pitch blocking slump lately? LOTS of PB’s and WP’s lately.
I guess Molina gets no credit for the great D the other night. Sigh
k score some more runs so we can get dave and mark in
Bruney and Melancon have no business in a game like this which is why having Hughes in the pen is so valuable….I dont care what the WAR crap says
I have no basis to make my argument even tho stats prove me wrong so stats are stupid!
right….hughes’ stats compared to that of melancon/bruney prove me wrong….WAR is a bunch of bullshit
You don’t need stats. You’re a Boss.
http://www.hulu.com/watch/6631.....ike-a-boss
right, cause you see it with your own eyes and that’s all you need boss
Yup. Pitch only the guys you trust until their arms fall off. Fuck the consequences.

Joe Torre and Dusty Baker
Yep…you’re a doctor/baseball manager/have any sort of experience in baseball….you have the inside knowledge
Yeah, because it takes a lot of experience in baseball to know if overworking someone’s body really does lead to injuries or not.
Nobody is being overworked so where is the argument here?
Sincerely,
Joe Torre, Dusty Baker, and 2009 feeling the pressure to win and keep his job Joe Girardi.
Hughes hasn’t pitched in 3 days, if thats any excuse for Girardi. Also, I really do enjoy seeing Hughes pitch.
Is Mo really going to pitch for the 6th time in 7 days? I really hope they put some runs up this inning.
Maybe Girardi will let Bruney start the inning with Phil waiting in the wings.
It’s possible, right?
Please rise as Kate Smith sings God Bless America.
I have to go pee
Maybe they’ll let Hughes throw the 8th and 9th??
Who needs Bruney/Robertson/Melancon when you can alternate days of having Hughes and Aceves/Coke?
The Yankees only need a 4 man bullpen, brilliant!
Call up Miranda/Shelley/Cervelli to fill out the bench since Girardi only has need for 4 relievers!
Tomko was obviously a dick about it, but he has a bit of a point re: Girardi’s BP stubbornness. He just seems not to have any inclination to get Bruney and the others right.
And how did Tomko earn anything out there?
He was terrible. It is about results after all.
Let’s be fair. Tomko really knew how to paint the corners.
ietc
+1
I can’t knock Tomko getting DFA’d, but he did only give up 3 ER in his last 10.1 IP with the Yanks.

Thompson just wants Tex to get a three run homer instead of a two run homer.
Nevermind.
Come on, Tex. We’re waiting for Brobertcon!
Not in love with that stop sign, but it’s the right thing to do.
You cannot fault anything he has done as a 3rd base coach especially after Meachem last yr.
Running on Baltimore is a bad idea. The third base coach was right to put on the stop sign.
What was Damon doing?
Dammit.
ah crap. me thinks the gardmiester would have made it.
What the hell happened?
Lined out to Huff and stepped on the bag to double off Damon.
That sucks.
Hughes had better be finishing this game.
Seconded.
Its obvious that Bruney will only pitch in low leverage situations. Which should be the case. he should have to earn important innings again.
What if we have 10 more games in a row with no low-leverage situations? What then?
You have to pitch everyone. Pitching nothing but your top 4 relievers hurts everyone, both the good relievers and the bad ones.
Good plan. So when does he start to do that? Tomorrow? Next week?
It’s a recipe for disaster to not give him any work and then expect him to be good. It’s three runs in the eight; let him start the inning, and bring in Hughes if he gets in trouble.
heh, i love me some Hughes dont get me wrong, but c’mon you dont want to waste all the bullets in the gun, ya know? there are others in the BP.
unless this is an evil plan to pitch him 2 innings
Stop thinking like that, pat. That sort of thinking is very dangerous.
I personally trust Robertson to get 3 outs in the bottom of the O’s order.
Zaun with a hit? Bust.
NOW THAT IS THE BULLSHIT THAT I CAN’T STAND. RUN AFTER THE FUCKIN BALL ROBBY
wooooosah
I’m not quite sure what you’re angry about here.
Just got tix to Tuesday’s Yanks/Rays game… CC vs Kazmir
LOL, wtf?
Wouldn’t a foot joke be more apt than a pi joke, considering the translation?
You’d be correct, sir.
OMG!! HUGHES ALLOWED A HIT! PUT JOBA IN THE BULLPEN AND SEND HUGHES DOWN & FIRE CASHMAN, GIRARDI & TRADE AROD!!!!!!!!!
YEAH A DP!! WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!
I heart this series of comments.
Phil is just that damn good.
Double play! I’d really like to see D-rob or Melancon for the 9th but probably wont since its a save situation. Damn that wild pitch strikeout run is not good right now…Come on offense score one more freaking run please.
Wouldn’t you prefer Mo getting another save? He’s second in the league!
No. Saves are dumb stats, and even if they were smart stats, we shouldn’t be managing to a stat.
jk
tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside says:
“Bruney >>>>>> Melancon and Robertson”
Sure…….
And that is why you can forget about Hughes being a starter in 2009. This pen has been lights out since he was inserted there and that certainly beats having him throw 100 pitches and 5 innings every 5th day. And God knows they dont want to touch Bruney or Melancon or Robertson in the 7-8th
This pen has been lights out since he was inserted there
Yes, it has.
and that certainly beats having him throw 100 pitches and 5 innings every 5th day.
Not necessarily, and that’s not the only other option for Hughes. Instead of throwing 100 pitches in 5 innings, maybe it’s in 7 innings.
False Dichotomy FTW!!!
Can I just say “shut up?” Would I get in trouble if were just to tell Bo to “shut the hell up?”
“Philty” is not clever in any way, shape or form.

Disclaimer: I am just kidding, but we should get rid of Ransom.
Sherrill’s Yankee audition perhaps?

Bruney before and after that time period = Robertson. Both high K, BB guys.

Why?
He’s save obsessed.

Can’t wait for Little Bill, is it? To say how he knew Burnett would be the answer to the Yankees problems in the recap thread. That boy has more faith in Burnett than me.
That boy has more faith in Burnett than me.
That’s unpossible.
Eh. I mean ya, he’s my favorite pitcher and I think he’s the man. But then again, I know what kind of pitcher he is.
Yea I was thinking about that and was gonna say something like that and add /Little Bill’d in the recap thread.
it is funny to see him just come in and be like, everyone chill the fuck out. every time. haha
Just a bit outside.
fun stat of the day;
Red Sox against Rookie pitchers:
W/L: 4-5
BA: .188
and in the last 36 innings against rookie pitchers they have scored only 3 runs!
hehe
Bruney making his own save situation.
Mo Time!!! Save Situation!!
Crud, at least he got the first two out.
Ouch, let me shut up.
Eric Davis Pt. II strikes.
Big homer by Adam Jones. Here comes Bo saying “That’s why you don’t pitch Bruney in a game” in 3… 2… 1…
A 4 run lead made pitching him possible, Eric.
Good thing for that tack on run. Doubt Joe leaves him in if guys get on now.
Heh, he called you Eric.
Eric probably should have waited til he got the third out before he gloated.
Bo’s probably mad at me for calling him Sal and Grant.
Even though I never changed my name and pretended to be someone else.
zounds
Good morning, Good afternoon, Homer……wait that’s not right.
ahh, he was so close to a clean inning.
Great job Bruney! Lets throw all fastballs right down the middle!!
damn, he was doing really well today too! Damn you Adam Jones. Hope Girardi doesn’t lose more trust in him.
Wow, Bruney was making such a nice case for himself, too.
Yes. Monster day for my much maligned fantasy keeper.
Everybody panic!! Bring in Mo!!
WTF BRUNEY
Bruney, you bastard.
Are you kidding me?
Bruney worked his way up the food chain, and jumped right back down the ladder.
…..
thank goodness for that extra run
i feel that this is appropriate for those that were all over bruney’s dick earlier this year. THE GUY ISN’T GOOD
To be fair, he’s pitched like twice in 3 weeks.
yeah, because he’s not actually good. career 1.5 WHIP
Welp brunedog, there goes ur ERA
Wow. Fuck Joe Girardi so hard.
Ass!!
One out save. Ridiculous. Until the tying run comes up leave him in the pen.
Turns out major league hitters can handle a straight fastballs right down the middle. Might want to mix it up next time Brian.
And you all still doubt he shouldn’t be pitching in high leverage situations??? LOL. Waiting for you Tommie Eric???
Let Bruney get the kinks in blowouts and low leverage spots.
F U Bruney…
At least Mo gets a save now
At least Mo gets a save now
fuck! Didnt wanna use Mo! Thanks a lot Jeter for not driving in runs with the bases loaded (half-kidding)
Good spin on that one.
He’s right though. if you can’t pitch Bruney with a 4 run lead he probably should be in Scranton.
But don’t discount the fact that Mo loves getting saves.
He threw just 6 pitches calm down. These people are athletes who are paid to play. So why rest Mo instead of letting him throw 103 of an inning. Dude clam down
Yeah, but he had to warm up (game style, not side style) and then pitch. Whether he throws 6 pitches or 20 pitches, he needs days off and, lately, he hasn’t been getting many.
i agree
You asked for Bruney, no we all get him………..
Bruney for that IBS dude.
BOOM.
Bruney just gave up another one.
Six straight! I love it.
if it was an ice cream it’d be rocky road – nick swisher on his day in right field
This showed that bruney still has some major rust on him but hes not far off. Going to take a lot now to trust him in a big spot. Hes just got to earn that back thru performance. A good Bruney would make this bullpen deadly.
I would agree. He’s always been a hit-or-miss guy anyway and when you add on the rust, you get 2 Ks and 2 HRs in 4 batters.
Well said, Bo.
There was some real good (the two K’s) and some real bad (the two homers) in that performance.
Bruney needs more reps. Straightening him out is a gigantic boost to this team.
Swisher is fuckin hilarious.
Well, all the noise aside, SWEEP!!!!!!!!!!!
amen to that
Bruney looked OK. Some FB’s that moved toward the middle of the plate instead of the corner. That’s what happens you dont pitch for TWO WEEKS.
Are you serious?
Are you really serious.
Why exactly was it so frustrating for you? So Bruney comes in and poops the bed – that’s hardly enough reason for a game like this to be “really frustrating”.
I am REALLY SERIOUS ZOMG!!!
“I never liked Brian Bruney. I told you his sample sizes were to small to say he was good.” – The Ghost of AXL
RUH ROH
Bruney didn’t set himself on fire after the game. Smithers… release the hounds.
Bruney with one of the best lines I have heard all year:
Kim Jones: Joe seems to see this as a step forward and I’m just wondering do you?
Brew: I’m not climbin steps I’m just tryin to get people out.
LMFAO
