Don Baylor put up a .296/.371/.530 (.901) in 722 PA with 36 HR, 139 RBI, and 120 R playing LF/RF/DH for the Angels.
He lead the league in Runs and RBI (because he played in all 162 games and Lynn only played in 147) and had 22 stolen bases. On the strength of that, they gave him the MVP over Lynn even though Lynn was way better and played a premium position.
Wait, it gets worse: Baylor got 20 first place votes. Lynn got… none.

Yeah, I’m the one with this crazy idea that overuse destroys bullpen pitchers arms. Not sports medicine professionals and not years of actual evidence of pitchers being wrecked by overuse… it’s just me all by myself. Just me and my own crazy idea that has no basis in any reality other than my own. Nobody else has ever, ever insinuated this by me. You must by right because I’m all alone in this and that means I’m wrong.

If your going to complain about overuse, it would of been yesterday when Coke was used 3 days in a row. Hughes had 3 days of rest, so he should be ok to pitch today. Now, if you were complaining about the under use of the other relievers, you have a legitimate gripe.
Yeah, because it takes a lot of experience in baseball to know if overworking someone’s body really does lead to injuries or not.

I can’t knock Tomko getting DFA’d, but he did only give up 3 ER in his last 10.1 IP with the Yanks.
What I mean is lately, Girardi is becoming more like Torre, just going with the dominant arms and letting the other guys kind of atrophy. In the long run, an effective Bruney and DRob makes the team a lot better. So, it is about results, but sometimes long term results should trump short term results.

Sheesh. After the past couple championship seasons, you’d think that Red Sox fans would have found an easier way to weather the inevitable lulls that are inherent in every 162-game season.
But nope. Now that the Red Sox are back in second place for the first time since June 7 the Nation’s panic buttons are again being hit with the frequency of a dying man pressing the doctor’s office wait bell.
Let’s take a look at the couple of short descriptions we saw after Tuesday’s 4-2 loss to Texas (which in turn elevated the Yankees into top dog status):
The Soxaholix. “Welcome to the wild card race.”
John Henry. “Frustrating games.”
SawxBlog. “Second place Sox.”
OK, so maybe those excerpts sound a little more downtrodden than panicked, but it’s still worth a reminder from Surviving Grady’s Ellis Burks character that not all is lost. Yeah, the Red Sox haven’t had a multi-run inning in 40 straight frames, they’re being harassed by the Smoltzuzaka monster and have played .500 ball since June 24, when the club was a season-high 17 games over the water mark.
Still, Fenway fans should fret not. No team was destined to go wire-to-wire in the AL East this season and I’m saying that it’s guaranteed the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays are going to spend the rest of the season throwing each other in and out of the ring.
Plus, Boston just traded for Adam LaRoche, which should pretty much solve everything.
Maybe that was sarcastic? I sure hope so.

Bruney looked OK. Some FB’s that moved toward the middle of the plate instead of the corner. That’s what happens you dont pitch for TWO WEEKS.
For a win, this was a really frustrating game and did not make for a happy fan in the end. Now, if the offense could really beat out a nice amount of runs for the As series while our pitching holds down the fort I’ll feel better of course. Because we’ll see the unused arms come out and get some of the rust off.
But if the games continue to be tight, Joe’s going to have to make better decisions than those a layfan could make in their sleep.

Why exactly was it so frustrating for you? So Bruney comes in and poops the bed – that’s hardly enough reason for a game like this to be “really frustrating”.

It’s frustrating to see Joe overuse three bullpen arms while the others sit idle. No, it wouldn’t be frustrating if we hadn’t had 5 close games in a row but that’s been the case. However, even today with a longer lead Girardi went with Hughes and then didn’t allow Bruney to attempt the final out of the game in favor working Mo who has been in too many games following the break.
Am I happy we won the game? Hell yes. But it is frustrating to see Bruney given no room to work with and the other guys no work at all? Hell yes.
I’m certainly not happy with Bruney’s performance but if he’s ever going to be effective again for the Yanks he needs to be given some leeway.
