can’t believe molina beat out a double play

Hairston Jr has higher OPS+ w/ Yankees than VMart w/ Red Sox.

    Just sayin’.

    • LiveFromNewYork

But does he stand and admire his homeruns?

  • Salty Buggah

    Cashman>>>>the Lanny’s and Bo’s of the world

It’s so great having Three Powerful Switch Hitters on the same team.

    • Dela G

      3? ;)

      Swishahouse
      Tex
      Posada
      Melkman (is very powerful)

      • JSquared

Well, Melky has Power, but he isn’t powerful.

    RE: WEEI

Mike Adams is atrocious. He is such a hack. Adds nothing of importance during his whole show. He randomly throws names out of guys that he thinks are on roids and speaks as it is the truth. No class. He is one of many reasons why WEEI is intolerable.

“they’re just better than people right now”

    • Dela G

      a money quote from paul

  • Tank the Frank

I just…I can’t stand it. I HATE Kevin Youkilis. I HATE the Red Sox. They cry about shit more than any team I’ve ever seen. Every time Youkilis or Pedroia get hit with a pitch, they act like they’re the first players ever to get hit. It’s like watching Rasheed Wallace get a foul call.

Shut your mouth. Take your base. It’s part of the game you get paid to play. I really pray that one day Youkilis will get hit, talk shit to the pitcher as usual, but then the pitcher will get just as pissed and punch him right the fuck out. I’m not kidding. I really wish personal harm on this guy.

    • Dela G

haha tim duncan is worse than sheed, but your point still stands ;)

      • Zack

Mutombo to this day has never fouled another player

    • JMK

How do you feel about Varitek?

      • Tank the Frank

I can’t get on him because he sucks so bad now. But honest to God if I could pick a fight with one person, it would be Kevin Youkilis, win or lose. It would just be a pleasure.

Beckett and Papelbon are up there too but I have a feeling they would kick my face in without breaking a sweat.

        • BigBlueAL

Beckett would kick your ass but Papelbon looks like a prick who is loud but has never gotten into a fight in his life and would probably get his ass kicked by a cheerleader.

          • Tank the Frank

Papelbon is built like a linebacker. I’ll take my chances somewhere else.

        • JMK

Completely agree. Youkilis is the anti-christ.

    • unclestevie

I couldnt have said it better

    • Salty Buggah

Everytime he K’s looking, he gets all pissed (like every other Red Sox really) like he can never misjudge whether a pitch is a strike or not.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

Since Youk sometimes swings while on deck without his helmet, I hope a foul ball goes off that gritty forehead of his.

  • Salty Buggah

OK, Mitre, you cannot give them the lead again…we better win this game!

  • Dela G

damn, i hope swish wouldnt be sitting on a fastball right there

  • JSquared

I would endorse a Hirsh or Igawa start (sounds crazy)… 3 runs through 5 isnt bad, but 5 through 5 and you make errors… not good.

  • Jim

The mitre era should end ton

  • Accent Shallow

Mitre should be better than this, but how much longer do you let him continue doing this?

  • Klemy

I want to punch Mitre in his jeans, “Incredibad”-ly.

  • Dela G

hey! he got out of it

i hate that he sucks, but he does what every 5th starter should do, keep you in the game. That means +/- 1 run. I’ll take it

  • Tank the Frank

Shouldn’t we bring in Gaudin here?

  • BigBlueAL

Aceves?? Really?? He couldnt pitch last night because of a sore back so why pitch him tonight just put in Gaudin.

    • Klemy

      I pretty much agree here.

    • Klemy

      I pretty much agree here.

      • Accent Shallow

        Same.

    • Drew

I’m guessing the back feels better.

  • Salty Buggah

I dont know. I thought Mitre looked good enough today. He was hitting his spots for the most parts and if it wasn’t for that error, he could have gone 6 innings and given up only 2 ER (though they were 2 HRs so thats not too good).

    I saw progress today.

  • JSquared

It’s close, Aceves can get through the bottom and the top without trouble, i’ll take it, i don’t know about Gaudin.

  • Reggie C.

    Mitre = Let down.

  • A.D.

Surprised no Gaudin…work on stretching him out.

    • JSquared

      He is stretched out.

      • A.D.

I thought the word was he was working out of the pen when he was acquired from SD, and thus wouldn’t be ready to start right away

  • Accent Shallow

    • JSquared

White sign behind Home Plate, BlueJays have excuse for not making a play they can’t make.

lol we don’t really know. Paul thought it might have been a white sign behind the plate.

    • Salty Buggah

      thanks guys

we need the offense to score!

  • paulc

    freakin double play….

  • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

For all those that absolutely loathe Mitre, a 5th starter, I hope you were this hard on Ponson, May, Clippard, DeSalvo and Chase Wright, amongst others.

In 1996, Scott Kamieniecki, Mark Hutton, Brian Boehringer, Wally Whitehurt and Dave Weathers started 14 games for that championship team.

If Mitre can keep the team in the game and make a little more progress on going deeper into games, what else can you ask for?

If you really think Chad Gaudin is going to give you a better than quality start average, you’re expecting a lot.

    • JSquared

Gaudin has done better than him this year, granted the pitchers park he played in, but he showed great stuff.

      • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

        73 ERA+ in San Diego.

      • Drew

Mitre has some really good “stuff.”

    • http://www.retire21.org Mike R. – Retire 21

I’m in agreement with what you’re saying, but this blog was incredibly tough on Clippard, De Salvo and Chase Wright, moreso than necessary IMO, and is still hard on Ponson and he’s not even on an MLB roster.

      • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

Hey, if people are being consistent across the board, not much more you can say about that.

    • Accent Shallow

The issue is that Mitre should be better than his results so far. He’s not Sidney Ponson, Tyler Clippard, or Matt DeSalvo. How much longer do you give him to straighten out to a 4.50-5 ERA before you cut bait?

      • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

I really didn’t expect Mitre to go 7 giving up 3-4 with 2 BBs and 5 Ks consistently. He never has. He’s always shown a little promise, but never become anything to say “hey, we’ve got a solid piece of the puzzle here”.

I was one of the people that wanted Wang out of the rotation after 2 starts, so I guess I would be somewhat hypocritical to say I’m willing to have to go a little longer. But he’s definitely been better than Wang was this year, which doesn’t say much.

    • Ghost of Scott Brosius

They probably were. Everyone knows that fifth starters don’t kill you, and you can win a title without a good or even decent one, but that doesn’t mean we have to simply accept it and not try to improve. Maybe gaudin is better than mitre? who knows? is he such an asset that we can’t risk trying someone else?

      • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

I agree, you always try and improve, but at this point in the season, how much better are you going to get? I want to see Gaudin pitch a few innings in this ballpark versus AL competition before I’m ready to rush to conclusions and say he’s going to be a better answer.

If he shows something and Mitre shows little to no improvement, then by all means, make the switch.

I’m just saying people need to keep their expectations in check for what options this team has as a 5th starter.

        • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Totally agree. I’m just wondering how long we wait for gaudin to get that shot. I have a feeling that until mitre’s completely shelled, joe’ll keep trotting him out, which i don’t think is such a great thing.

    • Tony

You guys realize Mitre has a 7 ERA, right? You would think we were ragging on someone going 6/3er

  • Dela G

    damn posada is slow

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

The annoying thing about mitre is he pitches just well enough to have joe praise him and earn another start

  • pat

Oh Come on Pauly , you’ve never heard of WHIP?

  • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

Congrats to the booth for embracing WHIP. In the year 2000…

  • Jake K.

This team can definitely win the division with Mitre as its fifth starter, but it will be a closer race than it should and it’s going to take a toll on the bullpen.

    • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Bingo. Not fatal, but it hurts

  • JSquared

Gaudin had a 4.41 ERA 1.27 WHIP .218 BAA in away games.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Why bunt when he’s already in scoring position? You’ve got three chances to bring him in.

      • JSquared

Yup, especially when his last at bat he hit a homerun…

      • putt

3 groundballs. That’s why. I’d rather be tied with 2 outs and none on.

        • http://www.myspace.com/bayside Thirty5Thirty6

Whose to say that they don’t strike out or pop up?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They’ve got three more innings to go. Play for one run, get one run. I’d rather see them aim a little higher. They’re not the Nats.

          • putt

At that point in the order, I’d take the tie and play for more later…but I’ve always been a bit conservative in terms of decisions like that.

Kay is distraught about Aceves pitching this 3rd inning

  • Stadium Garlic Fries

Mike Francesa is sad that Sox got swept by Yankees.

    • Bugsy

I think he’s questioning his faith in his baseball knowledge. He just doesn’t bring the heat anymore. It doesn’t help that he was wrong about almost everything about this team earlier this season.

      • Tank the Frank

        He NEVER admits it either.

        • Mike Pop

          Of course not.

  • Mike Pop

Aceves has been the mvp in this bullpen.

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

I think Girardi has decided hed rather have aceves be more of his innings eater/long man than the second best setup guy to hughes. Or maybe he’s being stretched out, orders from above…?

    • JSquared

He went 3 innings with only 30 pitches, if we win, it’s good, if we don’t, we were really close, we don’t know how Gaudin will be out of the pen, and why waste other guys if we’re not winning.

      • Ghost of Scott Brosius

I don’t really have a problem with the usage, in fact i like it. I just think its interesting that he’s prefers using him multiple innings, then not having for a game, to having as a potential setup guy for the seventh in front of hughes everyday. Shows confidence in coke i suppose, or drob

    • Drew

Or maybe Ace was the best option to keep us in the game today. Just a thought.

      • JSquared

It Was because… they didn’t score. Aceves and Girardi gave people nothing to complain about… but they did.

        • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Reread my original comment. Absolutely no complaint, just an observation.

  • Mike Pop

Take advantage of this short porch fellas. Let’s tie this game at least.

  • http://www.myspace.com/bayside Thirty5Thirty6

Stop complaining about Aceves pitching three innings. 11 batters faced. 30 pitches! Figure something else to get worked up about.

    • A.D.

      • A.D.

        whoops, I meant:

  • Mike Pop

Damn, didn’t think Carlson had enough to put Po away there.

    • Drew

word Jorge was right on em the whole AB

  • Accent Shallow

At least Jorge made him work a little. Hopefully everyone else can take advantage.

  • charlespoet

Only complaint, Posada needs to figure out how to hit again. Otherwise, he is going to be an over paid DH next year. As for this year, his defense is not so great that it compensates for his lack of hitting lately.

    • A.D.

I mean he’s been in a bit of a slump lately, but this year his OPS is better than his career numbers, so I don’t get the complaint.

      • Alex

figure out how to hit? isn’t he hitting 280 with decent power and a great eye?

      • charlespoet

The last three games of the BOS series he started hitting again but prior to that not much other than a hit here and there.

As for his OPS, not so much concerned with that as I am about his RBI totals. He has always been pretty dependable with RBI’s, he is a little off this year. Currently at 50 – think he will get another 40 to his career ave of 90? Same with 2b and hits.

Plus batting 5th he is only a .181 hitter for the year.

        • Accent Shallow

          Jorge is fine.

How his splits per batting order position are predictive, I have no idea. (Here’s a hint: they likely aren’t)

He’s also hitting .273 with a .494 SLG with RISP.

In other words, he’s fine, and if you’re worried about his RBI totals, you shouldn’t be.

    • JMK

He had like a 14 pitch AB there. And he’s hitting .284/361/508 with 14 home runs. I don’t think he’s forgotten how to hit. Is he Pujols? No, but you might be overreacting.

Though it can be frustrating to watch Jorge, I grant you.

    • Drew

By “lack of hitting lately,” are you referring to the 7 hits he had in the Boston series?

      • charlespoet

Easy 7 hits in 3 games does not make up for 8 hits over 8 games with 2 RBI’s. I realize what he did in the Boston series.

  • A.D.

Anyone else YES HD feed stop working

    • Drew

Nah man mines good to go.

    • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

Mine freaked out for a second, but it’s back.

  • Drew

    come on Johnny!!!

  • JSquared

    Damnit.

  • Salty Buggah

I hope we can get some off of Downs

    • JSquared

Yeah, all the way from the DL? lol.

      • Salty Buggah

Oh yea! Duh! My bad…I forgot that

  • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

He has to be being stretched.

    • zs190

That’s an interesting theory, it could be. They did say that Aceves was probably easiest to stretch out for starting.

    • Mike Pop

Ya, I would think so too.

    • Esteban

seriously, why else would he be pitching this long?

  • Bugsy

maybe the huge lead over the division might allow for aceves to move into the 5ht spot?

    • A.D.

Wouldn’t mine, can eat innings down the stretch, go back to the pen for the playoffs.

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Can aceves pitch wednesday? or does he need two days?

    • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

After this outing he’ll most likely be out two days.

      • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Then i don’t get it, unless he’s moving to the rotation.

        • http://www.myspace.com/bayside Thirty5Thirty6

He threw 42 pitches. Stop complaining.

          • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Its not an issue of pitchcount. Its a question of availability. We just lost, and now we don’t have our most versatile reliever for two days.

  • Riddering

    2 ABs is a SSS?

I find this hard to believe.

  • Pingback: Uneventful night in the minors | River Avenue Blues

  • Tank the Frank

You can tell Aceves is very frustrating to hit against.

  • Stadium Garlic Fries

Who is worse, Leiter or Flaherty?

    • Mike Pop

      Flaherty by far.

  • Mike Pop

    Damn, Al was just ridiculous.

  • adeel

G-man doesn’t want to bring Gaudin into a high leverage situation (close gaime)

you have all your relievers for your next two games, then an off day…

Aceves is giving you a change to win this game without using your setup man or closer.

I don’t think he’s being stretched out, but I can’t disagree with girardi’s logic here.

  • Chili Davis

Yanks will either tie it or win it.

    • Chili Davis

      Or not.

  • Drew

He still only threw 42 pitches. Dayumm

  • Riddering

Damn, Ace. I need new underwear.

  • A.D.

    Perhaps:

    CC
    Burnett
    Andy
    Aceves
    Joba/Guadin/Mitre

Where Joba starts every 10 days or something till mid sept based on skipping starts or spot starting Guadin/Mitre

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

I’m not sure i get girardi’s new obsession with resting people. I got not pitching hughes last night, and obvi this isn’t his situation, but where’s bruney? Guy hasn’t pitched since friday. Drob? One inning saturday. Does everyone need two days now before they can pitch gain?

    • A.D.

      Is resting people bad?

  • Mike Pop

    Here we go.

  • Drew

Let’s fix this cat’s era for him.

  • Drew

    Godzilla plz.

    • Mike Pop

      I can’t handle a L tonight.

  • adeel

    jeter to get pie tonight

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

Say we get to swish-damon to ph?

    • Mike Pop

      Already did, homie.

      • Ghost of Scott Brosius

        Epic fail by me

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

    Adam Everett is horrible. God.

    • Bugsy

that detroit offense is terrible. i hope either they ( or the twins) make the playoffs.

  • Bugsy

    please steal.

    • Mike Pop

      Wish Brett was here.

  • JobaWockeeZ

    Good job Matsui.

  • JSquared

    yes.

nice Matsui…I would love Gardy here. Im not sure I like Pena stealing. But too bad…

  • http://www.myspace.com/bayside Thirty5Thirty6

    Do you steal?

    • adeel

      no, don’t ask me why.

  • Drew

Frasor really needs to get some sun.

  • Mike Pop

    Awww. Fuck you Scutaro.

  • danny

    i miss gardy :(

  • Drew

Pena with an absolute horrible job by pena

    • Drew

      fail

      • trueblue

Matsui could have done that and saved the staff the trouble of washing Pena’s uni.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Huh, how so? Scutaro and Hill made a nice play.

      • Drew

Looked like he hesitated after contact, then he slid feet first kind of early. I thought so anyway.

  • Mike Pop

    C’mon Swishahouse!

  • DGeezy

swish, now would be an AMAZING time for 1 of your few yankee stadium homers

  • Accent Shallow

    They don’t send Pena why?

  • http://www.myspace.com/bayside Thirty5Thirty6

How do you let Adam Everett hit in a situation like that?

  • adeel

    swish hasn’t had pie yet?

    • Accent Shallow

      And apparently he won’t.

      At least not tonight.

  • danny

canz i havez a hr please?

  • JSquared

    FUCKING KIDDING ME!

  • Mike Pop

Damn, so this is what losing feels like.

  • danny

    boo.

  • JobaWockeeZ

Ugh I’ve had enough of Mitre.

    • Mike Pop

Ya, he fucked up tonight with that throw to 2nd.

      • JobaWockeeZ

I didn’t see the game actually but I kept checking the score until Ace came in and he was godly. Mitre gave another Mitre-ish start and I don’t like a guaranteed 5 ER in 5 IP.

        • Mike Pop

Mitre needs to learn to keep the ball down. Yea, he should be better but he’s having issues.

What can ya do, I think he’s better than this but we all get frustrated by this shit.

  • JMK

    Lame.

  • Bugsy

well, i hope we see paps blwon save tonight.

  • Riddering

    Damn.

  • Drew

    Well that was beat.

  • JSquared

Ok, so now you won 3 out of 5… Hate Mitre, can’t throw 20 feet to second, can throw 60 feet to home…

  • charlespoet

Well can’t win them all but this is the problem with not having a solid 5th starter.

    • Mike Pop

      Every team has it.

      • charlespoet

Don’t disagree, but really could care less about other teams deficiencies. Yankees are in a position to bury the Sox and Rays. One game does not create a problem, but why even get to that point.

Why not make any attempt to shore up that spot during this period of no days off and use it to their advantage?

        • Mike Pop

What do you suggest they do?

Can’t use Hughes to the 5th, cause this is not an option.

          • charlespoet

That is my point. They need to get someone if they don’t have anyone. I still think Hughes needs to fill in that spot. I know the argument for keeping him in the 8th but Joe didn’t bring him in last night instead choosing Scott Proctor. So what is the point of saying Hughes in the 8th if he is not used there after only throwing 10 pitches over two games. Seriously, that is going to hurt him?

            • Mike Pop

Well, I agree that Hughes should be the 5th starter. But it’s not happening.

We just have to roll with it, the 5th starter for the rest of year will be Mitre/Gaudin/Aceves/Hirsch/Ortiz.

Cash is not going to overpay for a guy to fill in for a little bit.

  • danny

we had to lose sometime, but idk i feel like we shoulda won today. oh well, go get’em tomorrow.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Eh, oh well. Go get ’em tomorrow.

  • A.D.

Bah, can’t win them all, but should have been able to win that one.

Would be nice if stretching Aceves.

  • mike HC

Thank you Sergio Mitre. Hughes for two batters in the Boston Series is not more important than six innings against Toronto. He would be in the pen for the playoffs anyway.

I know this is like beating a dead horse, but this game is the reason why many wanted Hughes to stay a starter from the get go. Just thought that it should be mentioned again.

    • Drew

Hughes is not in the pen to face two batters in one series. That’s just the way it shook out an it netted us two wins.

  • Bugsy

that tiant documentary is on tonight but i refuse to watch it because of last night. it’s my little protest.

  • trueblue

Please tell me we are done with the Mitre experement.

  • Tony

    Peace, Meat.

  • Mike Pop

Papelbon, please do us Yanks fans a favor.

    Thanks.

  • Russell NY

Can we finally call this the end of the Mitre experiment? Lets not let Mitre last as long as Smoltz.

  • Johan Iz My Brohan

I thought Mitre would win since he looked good for 2 innings… what a fool I am.

  • Dela G

    that sucked

  • danny

i dont think that in order to make the playoffs you need to have a great #5 starter, he just needs to be okay. i think mitre is okay, is gaudin better? we dont noe yet, maybe mitre’s stuff will transfer well to the bullpen where he only has to get 3 outs

    • Mike Pop

Ya, after Mitre’s next start. If he’s no bueno, I want Gaudin out there and Mitre to provide long man effort. I think he could be decent in the pen.

This all depends on what the plans for Aceves are though.

Like it has been stated on this blog before, I somehow want Joba to start in the playoffs without going to far over his innings limit. So it would benefit if somehow Aceves/Gaudin/Mitre could make starts in Joba’s place while providing for the 5th spot as well.

  • http://www.twitter.com/wahbjo01 Jordan

Mitre getting next start, for those who haven’t seen Hoch’s twitter yet.

    • JobaWockeeZ

Sigh. I don’t want to join the Gaudin bangwagon yet but another start like this will make me begging.

  • Drew

Girardi says Mitre will make his next start. I like it, if he didn’t botch the 4th inning I think he was set to have a decent start. Hopefully he pitches better next time.

    • Mike Pop

I’m with ya. Can’t complain about it all too much. Not many better options.

      • danny

i think he’s getting better every start, he looked so good, then he threw to second…. lol

        • Drew

word that play was a huge swing.

    • trueblue

If my aunt had a dick she’d be my uncle

Mitre has been nothing short of crap, he came into tonight with a 7+ ERA and it went up. Time to move along.

      • Drew

tell us how you really feel.

        • trueblue

all kidding aside, I just don’t get the vibe that he knows he is going to get outs. It alomst seems like he hopes he gets outs. Pitchign to contact with out plus stuff will do that to a guy

          • Drew

dude a 92-93 mph sinker is some pretty good stuff. Also, when he keeps it low his slider falls off the table.

            • trueblue

              his whip tells another story

              • Drew

I’m not saying he’s getting results, I’m saying the stuff is there. Whether or not he puts it together this year is still to be seen.

  • danny

dude needs some PFPs, cant throw to second for the life of him, however i think Cano should have caught it but watever. Bounce back tomorrow boys.

  • JMK

Girardi on Mitre: “It was a really good outing.”

He saw the same game we did, right?

    • trueblue

Mitre has to have pitcures of Girardi and Marv Albert getting whipped by a tranny.

      • JMK

No Michael Kay + tranny-foursome? Hey fans! I’m vacationing in Thailand with a ladyboy, a guy whose ball sinks, and a primate-looking man wearing pinstripes! SEE YA!

    • Drew

“The error cost him a good start.” I’d say that’s pretty accurate.

      • Mike Pop

No, Drew. I expect him to give 7 inning and 3 runs every night even though he is not the greatest pitcher to start off with and he is just coming back from TJS.

      • JMK

The error was definitely a big factor, but the error was also his fault. I still think that 5 runs in as many innings can never qualify as a good start.

It just seems that we’re really lowering the bar (even if he is the 5th starter) if that constitutes “good”.

  • Dela G

    gio gonzalez strikes again

    blanks the orioles

  • Lanny

Mitre will put up Igawa type numbers down in Scranton when hes sent back.

  • AJ

I guess we were flying too high.
