I’m here, you’re here, and we have this open thread … are you thinking what I’m thinking?
ByWe’ve got a very tiny bit of news for you tonight: Ian Kennedy was called up and will pitch in long relief. Pretty amazing that he’s in the big leagues now after undergoing surgery to remove an aneurysm from his throwing arm just a few shorts months ago. Great news, obviously.
Otherwise, whoever thought a night game on the west coast on a Saturday was a good idea needs to be beaten about the head and neck with a rubber hose. With nothing to do but kill time, so feel free to use this jalopy as an open thread while we wait for the game to start. The Angels and Texas will be on MLB Network, and that’s of some interest to Yankee fans because any combination of Rangers’ losses and Yankee wins equaling three will punch the Yanks’ playoff ticket. This could happen as soon as tomorrow afternoon, which would be cool. Anything goes here, just be nice.

Welcome back IPK.
+100000
I’d give him a big hug, but I have Swisher to do that for me.
Nice to see Verlander man up in a PLAYOFF PREVIEW, 7.2IP 5ER
Heh. 128 pitches, last three were clocked at 100, 100, 101 by PitchFX.
Yeah? If he were in the bullpen he’d have a bulldog demeanor and would throw 106
The only thing better than facing the Tigers in the ALDS?
Facing the Twins.
Nothing to do but kill time? Puh-LEEZE! Homework FTL…
Yea me too. Even if I work, non-stop from here til Monday including 8 hours of sleep tonight, I still wont finish. Im not even joking at all and this is still the 1st week.
God, I love not being in school any more.
I second that (though law school starts up in a few months
.
Shit. That sucks
Let’s go O’s!
geez…IPK already being put into the bullpen…wouldn’t you know. haha
Heh. If he puts up numbers like Aceves did early this season, are we going to hear calls to keep him there and make him the new Ramiro Mendoza?
we might aswell not even let our young pitchers start anymore…just have every pitcher in our farm system go 1 or 2 innings out of the pen.
problem solved
I floated that a week or so back, that maybe working out of the bullpen will help him get his feet wet in the bigs and give him some confidence. He won’t be able to over think his starts, waiting 5 days between them. The bell rings and it’s time to go to work. After doing that for a while, hopefully he’ll realize that he can get guys out on this level.
Maybe he’s next year’s Aceves. It’s not all that crazy of an idea.
Big 3 to the pen!!!!
I wonder if there is any chance that IPK makes the playoff roster.
Zero.
Well, I shouldn’t say that. If Dave Robertson, Phil Hughes, Brian Bruney, Andy Pettitte, Chad Guadin, Jonathan Albaladejo, Alfredo Aceves, and Joba Chamberlain all get hurt in the next two weeks, then he’s in.
But other than that, zero.
Right now, I would take him ahead of Bruney and Albalaejo. if you go with an 11 man pitching staff, you have 9 locks:
CC, AJ, Andy, Joba
Mo, Hughes, Aceves, Coke, Marte
I assume that Robertson is a lock if he comes back feeling good and pitches well in a couple of games.
That leaves 1 of:
Bruney, Mitre, Gaudin, Albaladejo, IPK, Edwar
Right now Gaudin would be the choice, but I could see IPK passing him in the next 2 weeks. Just think back 2 weeks. What would you have thought the odds were of him making an appearance in the majors this year?
Majors? I thought he couldn’t be back in the minors by this year.
Sorry buddy, but I think Gaudin, Bruney and Alby all beat him out. Mitre and Edwar wont make the playoff staff.
Even if he’s great, you can’t put too much stock in September baseball. Half the regulars are booking their fishing trips and the other half of the lineup are call ups getting a look-see. October is a whole different situation.
ZERO. I think..
Didn’t you have to be on the 25 man by Sept. 1st to qualify?
If someone gets put on the DL you can sub in anyone from the 40 man.
Oh snap, Peavu’s 1st start for the ChiSox is tonight!
*Peavy
Royals suck really really bad.
And Peavy’s still down 2-1 after 2. He has 3 K’s though. But again, this is the Royals.
I read the rest for Alex thingy and I’d rather no rest.
Pre-All Star
G-58 AB-199 R-35 H-51 HR-17 RBI-50 BB-48 K-38 AVG.256 OBP.411 SLG.548 OPS.959
Post-All Star
G-54 AB-205 R-35 H-65 HR-8 RBI-35 BB-28 K-50 AVG.317 OBP.405 SLG.488 OPS.893
thinking the 9 more hr and rbi’s
no rest for A-Rod
the rest for Arod was about three weeks before the all-star break so your numbers are skewed. Try again.
I ask you, what is the point of ESPN Boston if I still have to see stories in which Peter Gammons fellates Victor Martinez posted prominently on the MLB page?
“Victor Martinez loves everything about being a catcher, including catching knuckleballs and putting his 6-foot-2, 210-pound frame in harm’s way to save a run……except throwing out baserunners, he doesn’t want to be considered a showoff.”
“An overlooked deadline acquisition for the Red Sox is Casey Kotchman, who has yet to start hitting, but has clearly exhibited gold glove defensive capabilities.”
What??
Welcome to Peter Gammons’ world.
I dont like it, can I leave?
You probably should before you go crazy
Adam LaRoche has hit like Albert Pujols in the second half, but of course Casey Kotchman contributes more with his defense, suuuure.
Since we’re talking IPK to the pen, I hope the Yanks send Christian Garcia there next year. If they haven’t figured out by now that he can’t stay healthy as a starter, then I don’t know when they ever will.
He could be N-A-S-T-Y for us as a middle reliever next year.
Yea, he’d be beastly. Another shut-down set-up man would be awesome.
He has a bit more fastball than Hughes, good curve and solid control. He could be very effective, and hopefully he’ll stay healthy.
Hopefully
Rios sucks still. OPS+ with Chicago? -4
I’d ask if that’s a typo, but it’s Rios, so it probably isn’t. Wow! For a guy with tons of talent, that’s such a shame.
Penny’s line against LAD today: 7IP 5H 7R 7ER 3BB 1SO 3 HR
He even stinks in the NL.
2.2IP
Actually that should say 2.2 IP
“Zambrano has a full no-trade clause and is owed $54MM over the next three years, but he’s still only 28-years-old and still incredibly talented. The free agent market for starting pitching is thin, which may work in Chicago’s favor. Big Z might be appealing at the right price.”
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....-cubs.html
He loves hitting so he wouldnt waive his NTC for an AL team.
What about the Mets?
That would be a good match, since they don’t have much in their farm system. But if Hendry’s not getting much back, he likely won’t deal him. It’s a catch-22 because of his contract.
At 18 per, he really doesn’t have much residual value left as a trade candidate. This is one of those cases where you’ll hear GM’s say “Why pay for him with both money and talent when I can get XXXX for just money?”
That’s when the GM looking to deal him realizes he can’t get enough back to make it worthwhile, and decides to keep him. This is what happened with Halladay this year, and why Lee and Santana went for far less than people thought they would.
Thats true. But hasnt he worn out his welcome with management AND the fans?
Yeah, but I’m not sure its at the point where they’ll dump him for anything. They want to compete next year, Pinella’s talking about it being his last year, so you know they’ll rather try to talk things out.
He would be an awesome set up man. He has the bull dog mentality that is perfect for the bullpen.
But in all seriousness, he wouldn’t be so bad in our rotation
But the cost wouldn’t make it worth it
I’m not sure he’s cut out for NY. He’s always been his own worst enemy on the mound, and the pressure to win here might make him worse.
BTW-I know there’s pressure in Chicago, and its a big city as well. But that’s his homegrown organization, it’s different. Chicago is all he’s known.
Eh, as much I like Big Z, he’s not all that good IMO and wont be worth it with his price.
He also has attitude problems.
+1
It would literally be like having another AJ Burnett, except this one is freaking insane.
Pass, not worth the cost in players or the money.
How much in players would he command at that salary?
If it’s Ian Kennedy and Melky Cabrera, it’s still too much.
Damn, thats saying something since you hate Melky.
Edwar Ramirez? Enough
Exactly, and that’s not enough for Hendry to pull the trigger. Unless they just want him out of town, and I doubt that.
he’s a walk machine and a head case. All the things we hate about Burnett, but worse — except maybe the injury history.
Zambrano’s attitude issues scare the crap out of me – I can’t see the press in NY making any of that better
Stopper’s arm; minor-league head.
The one question – could the core of vets in NY make him behave? (Think David Wells when he signed in 1997)
Zambrano isn’t dat nice.
IPK is BACK BABY!!!!
Can’t wait to see him pitch again.
Come on Baltimore!
Thought you good people would find this humorous:
Today, on WFAN, a guy called in and stated (with 100% earnestness) that Mariano Rivera INTENTIONALLY blew the save last night in order to…
[wait for it!]
…send a message to AJ Burnett that the walk-off shaving cream pies to the face were not part of “The Yankee Way.”
God, I love New York!
I hope that the host left a pregnant pause that streeeeeeetched out awkwardly, and then just hung up on the guy.
Someone should tell that guy that Mighty Mo Himself condones the pie throwing.
http://www.fangraphs.com/fanta.....es-slider/
His slider just doesn’t have the same bite as a starter! They should put him back in the pen! He was so dominant!
Tampa is ruining David Price, wait no they’ve RUINED him already.
/francesa
David Price to the 8th!
6.0 K9 Post ASB- he’s not even good enough to be in the 8th. He needs to be back down in AAA to learn how to pitch and learn how to focus out on the mound, becase its obvious he’s not focusing.
Matt Albers really sucks.
Baltimore really sucks
Oh and smart move for Phillies to have Pedro go 130 pitches last time out.
3IP 7H 3ER 1BB 1K 56 pitches, left with stiffness in the right side of his neck
pitch counts are bullshit.
I fear change.
The Orioles bullpen must be destroyed for the good of decent baseball.
