Laird homers again, but Surprise falls in extras

By

AzFL Surprise (4-3 loss to Surprise in 10 innings) Austin Romine hasn’t played in a few days, so he’s probably hurt
Brandon Laird: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K – three homers in his first 37 at-bats in the desert … it took him 217 at-bats with High-A Tampa to hit three homers
Ian Kennedy: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1-6 GB/FB – 36 of 63 pitches were strikes (57.1%) … PitchFX had him at 90.56-92.1 with the fastball, and says he threw a ton of changeups (11 total)
Zach Kroenke: 1 IP, zeroes, 2-1 GB/FB – 10 of 11 pitches were strikes (91%) … PFX had him at 90.58-91.4
Mike Dunn: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB – 11 of 14 pitches were strikes (78.6%) … served up a solo jack to a 2008 first rounder in the top of the 10th FTL … PFX had him at 94.06-94.8

  1. Loving the K:BB ratio from IPK in the AzFL.

  2. Salty Buggah says:

I’m lovin the K’s from Kennedy.

Even though he gave up a HR, I’m also enjoying the K’s and pitches for strikes by Dunn in the past 2 outings very very much.

Hey Mike, 90-92 was his pre-surgery norm, right? Sounds like he’s all the way back to form.

Low 90′s + the rest of arsenal, is he a viable 5th starter for us next season or do you see him starting at SWB?

    • Salty Buggah says:

I think he’ll start out at SWB. With Phil and Joba in the rotation, I think we need some insurance/veteran guy like Andy. IPK will be great for depth though.

      • Doug says:

Yeah, the key will be if Pettitte returns. If he doesn’t, not sure you can go with CC, AJ + 3 “kids” (Joba, Hughes, IPK et al). Think we’d have to sign a veteran FA.

        • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

          Ben Sheets.

          • whozat says:

Not nearly enough of a sure-thing. They need stability in the rotation, with AJ being an injury risk, Joba and Hughes being young and probably inconsistent.

Frankly, I’d be hoping to retain Wang as the rehabbing ace-in-the-hole, Kennedy as the 6th starter, Gaudin at the 7th starter, ZMac as the 8th. Which means Andy or someone else solid as the reliable innings eater.

  4. Riddering says:

Second inning from Dunn with no walks. I love it.

Party at my place if he goes three in a row!

  5. Sleepy Carl says:

Laird, great prospect or greatest prospect?

Laird go to trenton next yr?
