Open Thread: Spring Training TV Schedule
ByYearning for some Yankees baseball? I know I am, so you can imagine how excited I was when I headed over to the official site earlier today, only to found out the TV schedule for Spring Training games had been released. 15 of the 32 games are being televised, far more than I remember them showing in the past. All but three home games will be on the tube. But hey, I’m not complaining.
Here’s the list of televised games. All times are Eastern and all games are on YES unless otherwise noted…
Wednesday, March 3rd: 1:05pm vs. Pirates (Spring Opener)
Friday, March 5th: 1:05pm vs. Rays
Saturday, March 6th: 1:05pm vs. Blue Jays (My9)
Monday, March 8th: 1:05pm vs. Phillies (split squad)
Tuesday, March 9th: 1:05pm vs. Pirates
Thursday, March 11th: 7:05pm vs. Braves
Saturday, March 13th: 1:05pm vs. Orioles (split squad) (My9)
Thursday, March 18th: 7:05pm vs. Rays
Friday, March 19th: 1:05pm vs. Tigers (split squad)
Sunday, March 21st: 1:05pm vs. Tigers
Monday, March 22nd: 1:05pm @ Phillies (YES/ESPN)
Sunday, March 28th: 1:05pm vs. Tigers
Tuesday, March 30th: 7:05pm vs. Blue Jays (split squad)
Wednesday, March 31st: 1:05pm vs. Twins (YES/ESPN)
Friday, April 2nd: 1:05pm vs. Orioles (YES/ESPN)
So right off the bat, three of the Yanks’ first four spring games are on TV. That’s awesome. All but one of the broadcasted games is a home game, which makes sense since I’m sure they don’t want to lug the YES cameras around and stuff. Even the one away game is against the Phillies in Clearwater, a half-hour away.
That April 2nd game is their last one of the exhibition season, but the Yanks will play their prospects in the Future Stars Game the next day. Apparently that won’t be on TV, and I’d like the know why not. The next day, the Yanks will be in Boston for Opening Day. Oh boy, baseball’s almost here.
Here’s tonight’s open thread. The Nets are playing, and the highlight of the Olympics is USA facing Canada in hockey, which you can watch on 7pm ET on MSNBC . Enjoy.

I’m not sure I can handle rooting against Martin Brodeur.
What are you? Unamerican?? Go back to Canadia!
Suggestion time: Looking for good suggestions to add to the RSS reader I just started today.
I like sports, music, nerdy-music engineering, and lefty leaning politics.
I started with the Yanks ones and got this list so far:
Bronx Baseball Daily
NoMaas
TYU
Zell’s
Fack Youk
iYankees
Pinstripe Alley
Was Watching
and of course Purist Bleeds Pinstripes
I read RAB and LoHud enough that I didn’t add them.
Help appreciated!
You want to add It’s About the Money.
And for politics I recommend http://ontd_p.livejournal.com It’s very left leaning, but it’s a great aggregator of political stories from around the world, not just the US.
thanks homey, the link didn’t work though
oooh my bad
http://ontd_political.livejournal.com (we call it ONTD_P)
what does split squad mean? I’m going to the March 9th game and i was wondering. does that mean the minor leaguers will play the majority?
Split squad means just that–you split the squad into two teams.
but they are playing the Phillies…
It means the Yankees are playing two spring training games that day so they split up the team with minor league players filling in for both games.
The minor leaguers play the away game and the veterans play the home game.
A few of the veterans will go to the away games. Something like 2-3 position players and maybe 1-2 pitchers.
Neftali Feliz will audition for the starting rotation during spring training, reports T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com.
“Things change,” said pitching coach Mike Maddux. “We’re going to stretch him and then at some point in Spring Training we’ll all get our heads together and decide which way we are going to go. Injuries happen. Right now we have a lot of starters, but will we have a lot of starters five or six weeks from now?”
What a mess. The Rangers organization is ruining this young pitcher with their team-inflicted head games.
/sarcasm’d
/Baseball Prospectus’d
Heh, ietc but some of the comments on the BP pitcher projections were hilariously overblown earlier.
I finally saw The Hurt Locker last night. Holy crap that movie was awesome.
wasn’t it??
hope you watched it in BluRay.
No, sadly, I didn’t.
But, yeah, that movie was intense. It’s definitely gonna stick with me.
Intense is always the first word I use to describe it.
Yup. There literally is not a moment in that movie when you can stop and take a breath.
I also saw Shutter Island today; it was good, too, especially considering I predicted the ending as soon as I saw the first trailer.
same with me. sort of takes away from the movie when the big twist isn’t a huge surprise.
I tried renting it and blockbuster gave me a damaged disc.
Ouch.
Red Box @ Stop and Shop, ftw!
Netflix baby.
Word. BluRay Netflix has changed my life. Also the first 2 seasons of Dexter streaming to the BluRay player?? Um, yes please!
the first 3 seasons are amazing. this season (4) i am not a fan of. the whole john lithgow angle isn’t grabbing me
Just wait bro…
I don’t know what episode you’re on or if you’ve finished the season, but it kind of does a 360 midway through the season and then the last episode is huge.
I hadn’t heard about it, but I downloaded it off iTunes. Fantastic movie.
Yeah, its theater release wasn’t wide/long-lived.
I want to party in the Holland House.
is that like the Hyacinth House?
No. It’s the party tent for the Dutch at the Olympics.
ESPN Classic had the game today from when the 2001 Mariners – you know, the 116-win 2001 Mariners? – blew a 12-run lead to Cleveland. Fun times. I forgot Charlie Manuel was managing Cleveland then.
and picking up the win? John Rocker
I KNOW
Still my least favorite baseball player. Ever
I wonder if the Spring Training games will be shown on YES nationwide. I’m not optimistic that they will.
I live in Michigan and have seen all of the spring training games televised by YES.
Awesome. Better clear room on the DVR.
ok, we’re packing bags for ST tomorrow morning…any last minute advice for what/where/how?
we’re also setting up our big league schedule for the year, and fml, i’m in DC for a week and the Natinals and Orioles dont have any games on the same or consecutive days…what luck
I love Google Chrome, but it eats up a lot of my memory when I’m using it.
fast, low-memory, feature-rich
pick two
It works fine on my laptop, probably because of the 4 GB of RAM. But I only have 2 GB on my desktop, I guess that’s not enough?
im using it right now with 2gb
There’s a guy on the U.S. team named Tommy Callahan? That’s awesome.
Ryan Callahan. He’s on the Rangers.
Dammit; I could’ve sworn the announcer said “Tommy.” Now I’m not as excited.
Doesn’t beat VIKINGSTAD on Norway.
Seriously.
VIKINGSTAD.
That name is awesome.
NoMaas apparently interviewed Swisher.
They’ve got connections, dayum.
Whoah. How’d you find this out?
Twitter is a wonderful thing.
http://nomaas.org/2010/02/anot.....k-swisher/
That’s awesome. Swisher rules.
He says “man” maybe more than Jeter, hah.
My guess on how NoMaas gets its intervies: Jason Zillo is a heroin addict and his dealer is SJK.
Yeah, they’re on fire lately.
Good interviews too.
what was with those pitcher projections? CC is less than .500, Mo blows 3 saves (min, prolly more cause they have him w/4 wins…not to mention how many saves they thought he’d have. another 15 wins out of the non-hughes pen, and we still dont win 86 games?!?!
Mariano Rivera is Mariano Rivera, if they were able to accurately project what he does he wouldn’t be Mariano Rivera.
/Yogi’d?
and now, yogi berra for yoohoo:
“drink yoohoo. cause it’s good.”
Anybody know what the deal is going to be with Spring Training games and the iphone mlb app? IIRC they weren’t broadcast last season, and living in MA and not having cable means I would be OUT.
That escalated quickly.
That’s what I said when the doc told me “we have to rule out a pulmonary embolism”
Even if you don’t like hockey, USA vs. Canada is a must watch right now. This game is awesome so far.
that’s cause it is what nhl hockey should be. bigger rink, faster, much more beautiful game. the “trapezoid” the smaller rinks and the amount of penalties really tie it down imo. if this were an nhl game there owuld’ve been like 5 power plays already.
it was a good start when the nhl got rid of the 2 line pass but i still think it will suffer til they go to the bigger ice
I agree 100%. The Olympic game is so much better. Plus you don’t have to watch a fight every 5 minutes.
whoa whoa. i love the fights. if they took the olympic game and made it the nhl with the fighting of the nhl it’d be amazing. I also feel like it would cut down on the dirty hits and serious injuries like the claude lemiuex on kris draper or the recent (last yr i think) boarding injury cause with a lot more open ice and a faster paced game it is harder to catch up mwith someone and catch them unawares
Don’t get me wrong, I like a good fight, but I feel like there’s too much in the NHL. Plus NHL teams carry meatheads for the sole purpose of fighting, which takes away from the quality of play.
I may be wrong but I think it’s an NHL sized rink. The same one the Canucks play in. I think.
It is an NHL size rink. “Brendog” does not have a clue about what he is talking about.
This game is intense. Holy shitballs.
it has a bulldog mentality
Ryan Miller has a bull in a china shop mentality.
those poor Canadians are wearing red too.
Just wait till it gets to teh 8th…minute?
/Knows nothing of Hockey.
canada is dominating the scoring chances. if this keeps up it is only a matter of time
18 shots to 6. yeah. wow.
Where is the hockey game? What channel?
NBC.
Huh. It’s showing skiing right now for me.
msnbc
I have it on MSNBC.
This is weird. NBC is showing Mens’ Ski Cross….
yeah they are. hockey is on msnbc
Yeah epic fail by me. My bad. Thanks.
Every time I see Mike Milbury, I immediately think of this classic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ef1YVXM9IU (safe)
i think of how he was an awful gm for the islanders..isnt he to blame for the fisherman 3rd jersey too?
if not i blame him anyway
He’s the Omar Minaya of hockey. Completely rudderless, just slapping shit together and hoping it works.
And there’s not too many Dominican’s in hockey, so Milbury is totally screwed.
The USA Hockey team should pick up Tanith Belbin, just so I have a good excuse to watch her.
(nodding)
Phil Coke in Detroit:
http://d.yimg.com/a/p/ap/20100.....leg102.jpg
(safe)
That’s… not a good look for him. (also RICK PORCELLO I LOVE YOU)
Coke looks like Rod Beck in that picture.
I was thinking Kenny Powers
Haha, that too.
he looks like doug jones in his late 20s
my bad, todd jones
wtf
also, speaking of Phil Coke, I read on the comments of some blog (I would link, but a. I can’t remember where it was, it might have been one of those awwwwwful Fanhouse-type blogs and b. I wouldn’t wanna be mean) and whoever it was said what happened to the 2009 Yankees before the 2010 season was “worse than what the owners of the Marlins did to the team between 1997 and 1998″ WTFFFFFFFFFFF
they’re gonna give him a chance to start too. interesting
Speaking of Phil, I’m going have to find a new Yankee to hate this year. The early money is on Randy Winn.
It seems like every ex-Yankee has to grow a beard or do something he couldn’t do while on the Yankees. Hopefully for Phil it’s just a phase because he doesn’t look so good.
Maybe Damon will go back to the Jesus thing.
can i just say, in reference to nomass’s interview with swisher, i hate how everyone uses the term “core four.”
cc used it earlier in an interview i think too. ugh. why not just call them the 5 rings club. next someone will call them the real yankees.
\rant
Yeah, I’m not a big fan of that moniker.
This.
I don’t hate it but I agree, it reeks of “real Yankees.”
I really love those four guys, though. They’re special. But I mean, then again, so’s A-Rod and Teixeira and CC.
In the interview, Swish called them “true Yankees”. Really.
what’s the hockey score? girlfriend has the remote.
2-1 us start of 2nd.
rafalski has both goals.
/whipp’d
perhaps but ever since she moved in the house smells better.
Also, I now have furniture. It was borderline serial killer decor in here.
You had a well in the basement, lots of black glass, racks of women’s clothing, and a moth collection?
/I must disagree sir, I must say you’re wrong
tie game
I went to the batting cages today with my dad. He said I have a swing similar to Johnny Damon’s. Does this mean I’m going to say I love a city and then go sign with another city that’s offering more dollars?
if you have a swing similar to Johnny Damon, then something is probably wrong – because he does pretty much nothing what any hitting coach would tell you to do. If you have a swing ‘resembling JD’s, i’d say thats a good compliment
One of the worst swings I’ve ever seen belonged to an ex-Yankee. It was way too long, he had an awful hitch in his swing and there was nothing smooth or fluid about it.
http://www.baseball-reference......da01.shtml
i hear he was pretty good. i remember it seeming like he was holding a toothpick cause he was just such a huge dude
He just had ridiculous athleticism and was a 3-sport guy out of college. He was one of only two player to ever be drafted by the NBA, NFL and MLB. He chose Baseball.
ICWUDT.
Speaking of Damon:
Over/Under: 15.5 HRs
Over/Under: .465.5 SLG
under 15 hrs
over .465 (he will prob hit plenty of doubles at Comerica)
under and under
ima go over cause i think he gets to high teens, 17-19 range. no chance in hell he breaks 20 though.
ive already put my 20 on granderson/johnson to outhomer matsui/damon too. my coworker thinks im crazy. sigh
it also may be a side effect
Dany Heatley is a cold blooded killer.
/Jack Edwards’d
over/under 15 steals?
Ugh @ Sweet Caroline. Worst. Song. Ever.
am I the only one that yells “SUCK.MY.BALLS!” ?
agreed. hate it.
“Sweet Caroline” was like the song of my camp that I went to when I was much younger, before they started playing it at Fenway. I used to have all happy memories about that song. STUPID RED SOX RUINED IT.
/cool story, bro’d
The Red Sox ruin everything.
Cotton Eye Joe: just as bad.
Add YMCA to that list, too.
the blackhawks are gonna be good for a loooong time with kane, toews and that other guy i cant think off off the top of my head. and if they can resign campbell.
28 Days Later is an awesome movie.
Agreed. I saw it in the theater when it came out. I was terrified the entire time.
usa has no offense. jeez. they’re getting schooled in every way but the score
is there no place online that has a refreshing score?
NYT?
Let me make this an open question.
Which Yankee do you think you’ll absolutely H-A-T-E this year, and want off the team by June? Last year I had Phil Coke, the year before I had Latroy Hawkins. This year, I suspect it will be Randy Winn.
I don’t really hate any Yankees. I can at least tolerate all of them. And I know from people who met him that he is actually a really really nice guy. But, frankly, I do not look forward to AJ Burnett’s starts, ever (this was especially true last year when Molina would have to be in the lineup).
gardner…maybe mitre
ooh Mitre is a good one. Mitre much more than Burnett.
I don’t dislike Gardner. I think we just have to realize that he’s likely not going to get much better than he is now. He is what he is.
Oh, I don’t think you can say that definitively. That’s what scouts said about Johnny Damon when he was called up, that he would never hit for any power and was a nice 4th OF type. You never know, and I’ll bank on his work ethic giving him a shot to stick.
I think he can improve his on-base skills and maybe his contact skills, but I don’t think Gardner will grow into much more power (I know you’re not saying he will, just speaking in generalities). As long as he continues to play good d, though, and steal some bags, he’ll be valuable as long as he’s cost controlled.
Right, and the Yanks get so much offense out of what are often light-hitting defensive positions (C-SS-2B) that they can live with him not being a plus bat. (Hopefully) League average batting production with plus defense will be fine.
I agree.
Mitre. I already hate him. A lot.
Oh and I already want him off the team.
I can totally understand, but I just can’t bring myself to hate him. He obviously cares a lot, you can tell by the look on his face after a bad outing and conversations he has with Pettitte, where he listens intently to every word. I see a guy that is just trying so hard, maybe TOO hard, and I actually feel bad for the guy.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Maybe I’d feel differently if I thought there was even an iota of upside in him, but I don’t see any.
He’s a sinkerballer. They’re either really good or totally suck, with not much in between.
Mitre is most certainly in the latter category.
/hopes he proves me wrong
easily Mitre.
I don’t hate him but the most disliked for me it’s Gardner. I’m not a believer of him at all.
A-rod. They would be better off without him
Ian O’Connor impression: You’re doing it right.
http://assets.nydailynews.com/.....e_0209.jpg (safe)
I’m sure you’ve seen it, but the best part of this is the look on A-Rod’s face and the way he’s holding up his hand, as if he’s saying, “You KNOW this is crazy talk, right?”
I really want Schilling to be outed as a PED user. There is no one about whom I would rather hear that
I’m pretty blase about the steroid era but I would literally have a party and everyone here would be invited if Schilling was outed as a user.
His former teammate, too.
eh, don’t care so much about Luis. Schilling though…
He broke my thirteen-year-old heart. Therefore, because I am irrational, he must suffer in many, many ways.
(That picture is also, like, the steroid era in one image.)
more than this one?
http://bleacherreport.com/imag.....jose.1.jpg
point taken
He was actually saying “Five” as in, “$5,000 for every step I take this year. I’m rich bitch.”
At this point, there’s no one hateable, imo. All happy thoughts.
this, mostly.
Optimism 2010 woooo.
Yeah, that … Nobody. I hate nobody on this team. It’s awesome.
I would say either Hoffman if he makes the roster and shits the bed a la Gardner or Winn if he bombs against lefties.
You obviously just hate grit.
You must hate America, Moms and apple pie, too.
I still think of Chris Drury LLWS star before I think of Chris Drury NHL star.
You beat me to the LLWS reference in re: Drury. Damn you.
Hey look, Chris Drury’s starting to earn some of his contract…
adam dunn for dh in 2011?
reply fail. wow. wtf is this doing here? hahaha
And you want to be my latex salesman?
Score?
3-2, end of two.
Much obliged. ESPN has the score but no time indicator.
You can watch online at nbc’s website.
Whoa, thanks boss.
I didn’t think hockey existed in the mind of ESPN.
/pot & kettle’d
I’m not one to talk. I watch maybe 3 hockey games a year, all in the playoffs.
I’ve watched more hockey this week than I have in the last five-ten years.
Nard-dog is up on A-Brack. Awesome.
oh, that’s from Lohud.
I’m high on Brackman too. I’m feeling a big year.
If he can keep his ball down, he’ll be almost unhittable. 6’10″ with loads of downward plane would make that thing impossible to get any lift on.
But everyone looks great in ST. I’ll wait for the games to begin. He’s the kind of pitcher who could look great in side sessions, but lose his mechanics in the middle of a game and get clobbered.
Hey, if Nardi is happy, I’m happy.
If nothing else, I’m happy that we can call him Nard-Dog
Did he go to Cornell, too?
Cool, it’s that time of year. I hope he’s right, I’d LOVE to see Brackman blast through the minors this year and get a call up. I have this recurring drea . . make that ‘fantasy’ about him coming out of the bullpen and being the most intimidating presence since Goose.
The only player I remember coaches being worried about in Spring Training was Kei Igawa. Go figure.
With Brackman, I’ll certainly take looking great in ST. His problems are clearly more physical and mechanical than mental, so it’s not like he’s getting into games and struggling due to his makeup, but more being 82 feet tall and still not 100% coming back from TJS. It’s certainly a small win that he’s throwing well the 1st week in ST, but I’ll take it.
WOW, the U.S. just got so lucky. How did that not go in?!
Deflections and screens. I’d say 75% of the goals scored in the NHL are the result of a screen, deflection, or both.
Concerning next year’s FA class, does anybody think Jayson Werth could be an option for left field? He’s a good defender (3.4 UZR/150 last year), gives you plate discipline, and is a great hitter (wOBA of .383).
Opinions?
too old, too much moolah.
probably this
good player, though.
also, he looks like a DB.
Yep. Bad knees too.
Of course he’s worth looking at. Way too early to give serious consideration towards though.
Just like everyone, it depends on the length of the deal and how the market develops.
I actually really like him. I just think it’s important to trend the outfield younger and cheaper since the infield is getting old and expensive.
Werth is gonna be 32 when he plays his first game of his FA contract. No thanks.
Yeah, he’s much older than he appears/we think.
And has bad knees. Pass.
How can you say pass so early? Second tier corner OFer’s haven’t exactly been getting paid lately.
He’s more like a 1.5 tier OF. Jason Bayian.
DEA is an awesome show.
explain further
I really want the Giants to take that punter from UM Zoltan Mesko with their 6th or 7th round pick. 6’5″ with huge guns, punts the ball a ton, AND has a badass name. DON’T MESKO WITH THE ZOLTAN
Al Davis will probably scoop him up in the second round.
Dont knock the Janikowski pick! Oakland has gotten solid value out of that kid, more so, than the Heyward-Bey pick will ever yield.
Damning with faint praise.
And no, the Raiders didn’t “get solid value” with the Janikowski pick. The two men who went immediately after him were Chad Pennington and Shaun Alexander. Imagine how much better the Raiders could have been with a league average kicker and one fewer perennial black hole at either QB or RB for the past decade.
So if the USA holds on, in the grand scheme of things how much does this help their medal chances and/or hurt Canada’s?
Wow. I said if so as not to jinx anything, and I kid you not, as soon as I hit “add comment” that just happened.
I was under the assumption that they’re both out of it.
“Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak, meanwhile, has said that one reason he went to seven years, $120 million on Holliday was his fear that Boras would accept a one-year contract from another club.”

Why would you even admit that?
Surely, he can’t be serious.
He might be. And don’t call me Shirley.
That can not be true. It just can’t.
Didnt he just lose credibility with every single agent? How can you be the primary negotiator and basically just tell how you cracked under pressure.
Ouch
Tremendously tremendous? Really?

They should have pulled the goalie sooner, the USA can barely get a stick on the puck, nevermind clearing the zone.
That was amazing.
USA!!!
Do you believe in slight upsets?!?!
ietc
Do you believe in minor miracles? YES!!!
Can you imagine if Kay had called the Miracle on Ice game?
For 30 years, the Miracle on Ice has reigned supreme in the American psyche. Now, it is joined by this upset of not nearly the same magnitude
“If you don’t believe in miracles, SEEEEEEEE YA!”
Do you believe that a team full of NHL stars can beat another team of NHL stars? YES!!!
Well Canada, don’t be too upset. You still have Avril Lavigne and the Barenakedladies to fall back on.
That was cold blooded. You forgot Keanu Reeves and Alanis Morrissette. But, they DO have Jennifer Tilly…

Hi-oh!
So I just spent a few minutes looking at the standings/tourney rules… And it looks to me like the winner of the Canada/Germany play-in game is probably going to get Russia in the quarterfinals, right? I’m not sure how tonight’s Finland/Sweden game affects the seeding for the knockout rounds, so maybe I’m missing something.
Canada/Russia in the quarterfinals would be so cool. If Ovie knocks Cindy out of the Olympics in the quarterfinals (on Canadian soil!), Mike Millbury might spontaneously combust (along with the rest of Canada).
