First Half Review: Seven who exceeded expectations

Triple-A Scranton is off until Thursday for the All Star break.

Double-A Trenton (10-5 win over Bowie)
Justin Christian, CF & Luis Nunez, SS: both 1 for 5 – Christian scored a run … Nunez doubled, scored twice & K’ed
Dan Brewer, RF: 2 for 5, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS – had been just two for his last 19 (.105)
Brandon Laird, 3B: 0 for 2, 1 K – left the game after fouling a ball off his ankle, and it doesn’t sound too good … neither Laird or the trainer was around after the game, and he’s already backed out of the Eastern League All Star Game, which is obviously a bad sign
Marcos Vechionacci, 1B: 3 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 SB – seven for his last 16 (.438)
Jack Rye, LF: 0 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (throwing) – got picked off first
Rene Rivera, C: 2 for 4, 1 R, 2 K
Justin Snyder, 2B :0 for 3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Edwar Gonzalez, DH: 1 for 3, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 CS – got picked off first … six for his last ten

J.B. Cox: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1-2 GB/FB – 27 H allowed in 16 IP … comeback’s not going to well

High-A Tampa (11-8 loss in 10 innings)
Ray Kruml, CF: 3 for 5, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB – been caught just four times in 25 stolen base attempts (84% success rate)
Jose Pirela, SS: 2 for 6, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
Bradley Suttle, 3B: 3 for 5, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K – this game aside, he’s been a big time let down this year … OPS’ing ~.670

Dellin Betances: 2 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 3-0 GB/FB – first time he’s gotten knocked around since coming off the DL … this is a good thing, you want him to face adversity to see how he rebounds
Trenton Lare: 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB
Noel Castillo: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 2-1 GB/FB

John Van Benschoten: 1 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-0 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (3-2 win over Rome)
Kelvin Castro, SS & Neil Medchill, LF: both 0 for 4 – Castro K’ed & committed a fielding error

Short Season Staten Island (6-5 loss to Batavia in 15 innings)

Luis Parache, SS: 1 for 6
