Yankees spoke to Padres about Hairston

Sherman: Yanks 'definitely in' on Berkman

Via Joel Sherman, the Yankees have called the Padres to inquire about the possibility of acquiring Jerry Hairston Jr. for the second straight trade deadline, but they were told he’s not available. San Diego has the best record in the National League and leads the NL West by five games in the loss column, so they’re not going to give him away despite his .290 wOBA (.323 at home, .255 away, so it’s not Petco either). That’s a kind of player the Yankees are looking for though, a versatile righthanded bat that could platoon with Curtis Granderson if needed.

I seem to recall a player of Hairston’s caliber on the 2009 Yankees…

  • Bronx Ralphie

why don’t they check to see if Melky and Hinske are available also?

    • FIPster Doofus

I know you’re being sarcastic, but Hinske would be a great addition. Too bad the Braves are an elite team in their league and aren’t going to move him.

Plus, as the last three years proved, having Hinske guarantees you a spot in the World Series. :)

We’re gettin’ the band back together.

We’re on a mission from Mo.

we could have kept him; why didn’t we?

Probably because the Yanks thought Hairston’s salary demands were too high and because Hairston wanted a starting job. Only one of those reasons is a valid excuse. Hint: It’s not the first one.

      No.

    (looks at JHJ’s 2010 vital-line)

    Meh.

The Yanks wouldn’t be asking him to be an All Star. They just want someone slightly less useless than Ramiro Pena. Hairston’s worth it IMO.

I just think there’s other Peña upgrades that would cost the same and produce better, like possibly Keppinger.

I wish we would have jumped on Guzman.

    Jerry Hairston Jr.

    Hmmmm…that names sounds familiar.

  • Mark

Can’t get on Hairston, got nice money, great city, playing with his brother, and as an added bonus on a first place team.

    • Brian in NH

i hear NY is a good city too…he would still have the money and he would be going to a better first place team.

      • Poopy Pants

It’s a great city if you love filth, dumb people, over-crowdedness and high taxes.
I live here and I’ll admit it.

New York is no more filthy than any other MLB city. And dumb people are EVERYWHERE.

Overcrowdeness and high taxes… I got nothin’.
