Yanks might not be out on Dunn after all

By

We heard yesterday that the Yanks ceased their pursuit of Adam Dunn. That, however, might have been something of negotiation ploy. According to some of Ken Rosenthal’s sources, the Yanks are still in. According to others, they’re actually over Dunn. The Rays are reportedly still in the Dunn hunt as well. I’ll have a bit more on the pursuit of Dunn shortly.

Steve Phillips actually made a lot of sense this morning (shocking, I know) when he said that the Yankees are likely only in on Dunn to drive the price up on the Rays. Cashman always used to do this with the Red Sox, it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s using the same strategy on the Rays. If the Yankees are back in on Dunn, I am willing to bet it’s because they heard the Rays are too. I doubt there is any serious interest, considering the cost.

      Makes sense.

I question if this deal can really get done given what the Nats just got for Capps.

Am I the only one who didn’t understand that deal? From what I understood, Rauch has been performing admirably for them. I guess it gives the Twins some more depth, but that deal raised my eyes a bit. I know they have Mauer as their catcher, but Ramos seemed like a lot to give up for an average at best relief pitcher.

Simon: Captain, your navigator, Mr. Unger, and your first officer, Mr. Dunn.
        Clarence Oveur: Unger.
        Unger: Oveur.
        Dunn: Oveur.
Clarence Oveur: Dunn. Gentlemen, let’s get to work.
Simon: Unger, didn’t you serve under Oveur in the Air Force?
Unger: Not directly. Technically, Dunn was under Oveur and I was under Dunn.
        Dunn: Yep.
Simon: So, Dunn, you were under Oveur and over Unger.
        Unger: Yep.
Clarence Oveur: That’s right. Dunn was over Unger and I was over Dunn.
Unger: So, you see, both Dunn and I were under Oveur, even though I was under Dunn.
Clarence Oveur: Dunn was over Unger, and I was over Dunn.

Prosecutor: Doctor, can you give the Court your impression of Mr. Striker?
Dr. Stone: No, I’m sorry. I don’t do impressions. My training is in psychiatry.

Witness: Striker was the squadron leader. He brought us in real low. But he couldn’t handle it.
Prosecutor: Buddy couldn’t handle it? Was Buddy one of your crew?
Witness: Right. Buddy was the bombardier. But it was Striker who couldn’t handle it, and he went to pieces.
            Prosecutor: *Andy* went to pieces?
Witness: No. Andy was the navigator. He was all right. Buddy went to pieces. It was awful how he came unglued.
            Prosecutor: *Howie* came unglued?
Witness: Oh, no. Howie was a rock, the best tailgunner in the outfit. Buddy came unglued.
            Prosecutor: And he bailed out?
Witness: No. Andy hung tough. Buddy bailed out. How he survived, it was a miracle.
            Prosecutor: Then Howie survived?
Witness: No, ‘fraid not. We lost Howie the next day.

Olney said on the Mike and Mike show that the Yankees and Rays were in a war over Dunn with the Rays coming out on top.

    • mikebk

what would it cost the rays to get dunn?

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

(crosses fingers that the Rays are dumb enough to give up Hellickson or Jennings for Dunn)

        • mikebk

i was hoping they gave up hellickson.

          • mikebk

i figure they keep jennings for when crawford leaves and probably think they have enough pitching to deal hellickson.

            • Thomas

I don’t think they’d give up either Hellickson or Jennings. I’d say a Jake McGee/Sean Rodriguez package might be sent.

      • http://ballcraft.blogspot.com Zanath

Probably someone like Wade Davis and some top prospects. I don’t really know much about their farm system, so someone else would have to fill that in.

      • http://twitter.com/j_yankees2213 j_Yankees

they’ll probably get him for next to nothing and then we will all bitch and whine and complain about the how the Nats screwed us like the M’s did.

So they are either in on Dunn or they’re not. So glad we have sportswriters to give us this valuable information!

That’s not fair. Even if you think the Haren package was weak (and I disagree), the Oswalt package certainly wasn’t. Happ and Gose are legit, as are Happ and Wallace.

Did anyone else hear Olney report the Yankees are still in on Dunn last night? Because I did, and I had a post about it this morning.

  • phughesisgod

In all honesty, before you even make a deal, you need to talk to Dunn first. Make sure hes ok with playing DH and playing 1B or LF when Gardy, Grandy or Tex need a rest. If he is ok with it and playing on a championship contender, by all means, bring him in and let him let loose at Yankee Stadium.
