Gardenhire, Black take home Manager of the Year honors

By

Ron Gardenhire of the Twins and Bud Black of the Padres were named the Manager of the Year in their respectively leagues this afternoon. Gardenhire received 16 of 32 first place votes and beat out second place Ron Washington by a sizable margin. Joe Girardi received one third place vote. It was much closer in the NL, where Black received 16 first place votes and Dusty Baker took home 13. Black totaled 104 points, Baker 103. So that was close, congrats to both guys.

The fact that Dusty Baker got 13 first place votes pretty much says all you need to know about this award.

      awards blow.

    • Chris says:

I don’t think he’s as bad as people make him out to be. He does tend to be in the old school mentality about injuries (“just rub some dirt on it and you’ll be fine”), but he’s been pretty successful with a number of different teams. The injury thing would prevent me from ever wanting him to manage my team, but he seems to do pretty well until everyone breaks down.

    • Hughesus Christo says:

Mark Prior/Kerry Wood’s bad mechanics get people to say a lot of ridiculous things about Dusty Baker

      • Thomas says:

Coming out of college Prior was thought to have perfect mechanics, though now many say he landed on his heel a bit much. His arm motion was perfect and his overall motion was very clean.

  2. Monteroisdinero says:

Thanks Ron. You gave us hope for a few days. Alas it was false hope.

“I thought Ron Washington would win because he was very enthusiastic.” -MLBN

As long as it wasn’t Francona or Sciosia winning then it’s a good choice.

    • bexarama says:

I thought Francona did a fine job this year considering injuries but a. Charlie Manuel had that argument, just better; b. among ALE non-playoff teams, I think Cito Gaston probably deserved more votes than he got. Then again, he did get a first-place vote.

RT @keithlaw: That’s cold RT @HunterFelt: @keithlaw Gardenhire only got a minute into his speech before NYY management swept him offstage.
