Open Thread: Look, players stretching!

Yankees announce non-roster invitees
Swisher set to hire Scott Boras Dan Lozano
(via Marc Carig)

We’re now three days away from pitchers and catchers officially reporting for duty, but most of the team has already showed up to Tampa anyway. A clean-shaven Eric Chavez was there, Jesus Montero did some running, Curtis Granderson and Russell Martin got acquainted, and yeah, that’s pretty much it. Those linked photos come from Bryan Hoch’s Twitter feed, which has a bunch of updates on who threw bullpen sessions and took batting practice today. It’s frigid here in New York, but spring’s a comin’.

Here’s the open thread for tonight. All the local hockey and basketball teams are in action, so there’s a lot to do if you’re stuck in the house. Enjoy.

It would be nice to see the Knicks play with some effort tonight. And they better get Melo soon because it’s getting into everyone’s heads now.

I don’t think any trade is happening. Looks like it’ll have to wait until FA.

If it means giving up 2 or 3 of our starting rotation, forget it. It’s better to get him via FA when Walsh doesn’t have to give up anything.

After watching this video, I wouldn’t give up Fields for anything:

Ha, well I would easily give up Chandler for Melo. If it came down to it, I would give up Fields too, as much as I like him. Melo is a top 10-15 player and the Knicks need the scoring help

“It’s better to get him via FA when Walsh doesn’t have to give up anything.”

        Just like Cliff Lee, right?

What difference does the next 2 weeks make? After the trade deadline everything will settle down and no one will care if the Knicks don’t win a single game for the next two weeks.

      • Esteban

I think I would care, and it would hurt their playoff position with or without Melo.

    2 more sleeps!
Ok, so when will RAB be registering fantasy baseball teams? We need a waiting list.

Were you in a league last year, it’s up to the commish to renew the league and invite all the players.

Will you be starting new leagues? I was in class when all the leagues opened last season so I missed out.

          +1

      • mbonzo

Nope, I don’t mind setting up a new one.

One of my closest friends is a Cardinals fan (and roots for the Yankees to be nice to me) and he is straight-up worried about Pujols leaving. He’s convinced the Yankees are going to get him. I dismiss him as irrational- the Cardinals are going to get it done with him. You don’t let the best hitter on the planet walk away. They can afford it. That town/stadium lives and breathes Albert Pujols. And this signing Pujols to be our DH thing is just batshit crazy. My fellow Yankee fans never cease to amaze with their want for the “icing on the icing on the icing of the Mt. Everest sized cake.” Not saying Pujols in pinstripes would be bad, but seriously, every baseball team on the planet wants him on their team.

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

The Yankees just don’t need Pujols IMO. Our first baseman is certainly no Albert, but he could be on a different train to the HOF anyway. At best, Pujols adds 3-4 wins annually at a cost of an extra 10 mil, annually. Nah. What’d we do with (180,000,000!) Teix? Other teams have bigger needs.

But he’ll stay a Cardinal anyway.

I think the Cards don’t get it done and he actually hits FA, where the Cubs are the biggest non-STL suitor for him. But it doesn’t matter, he’s gonna be a Card.

    • Mattchu12

I doubt the Cardinals get something done and he becomes a free agent at the end of the year, but I can’t imagine that the Cards let him sign somewhere else. They just want him to sign a sweetheart deal to stay in St Louis, but eventually they will pay up.

Cash is wrong. CC lost 30.

Does a clean shaven Eric Chavez look like Don Mattingly’s younger evil twin brother to anyone else?

    • http://twitter.com/AnaMariana42 Ana

      YES.

i know the yankees have issues. BUT I AM PUMPED AS HELL FOR THIS SEASON ANYWAY!!!

  • Another Bronx Dynasty

Swish becomes a FA so is it inconceivable to put Albert P. in RF? Once before we traded for the best player in the game & shifted him to 3rd base.

Im more concerned that if he does become a FA & leaves St Louis the Theo & the Red Sox jump in. They have to bee concerned with the age of Ortiz and upgrade their DH. In Fenway he could hit 100 HR per yr.

    • Accent Shallow

I know Pujols is an athlete, but I wouldn’t want to put someone with elbow issues in his throwing arm in RF.

  • Doug

Yes, Eric Chavez looks very much like Donnie !!

Today I noticed he even looks like Donnie at the plate. His stance and swing are also close to Don Mattingly.
