Game 24: Just win

Give us a reason to smile today, Robbie. (AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

The Blue Jays didn’t win last night’s game as much as the Yankees lost it. Not only did they not hit with men on base, they didn’t even bother to put together good at-bats. A sixth inning error on a Little League caliber rundown resulted in the two runs that ended up being the margin of victory. But then there’s this little factoid: Toronto is 8-1 in the first game of a series this season (they blew a seven-run lead in the one loss), but they’re just 5-12 in all other games. Hopefully that trend continues today. Here’s the starting lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 3B
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Brett Gardner, LF

A.J. Burnett, SP

It’s just a routine day off for Alex Rodriguez, he’s available to pinch-hit if needed. It’s the rare non-FOX broadcast 4pm ET start on a Saturday today, as YES will carry the broadcast. Enjoy the game.

  1. Pat D says:

Apparently ARod’s legs are tired and he’s not using them to drive the ball. I caught Curry at the end of his diagnosis, so I may have incomplete information.

  2. Epy0n says:

Halladay goes the distance once again.

  3. A-Rod's Wingman says:

What’s the Yankees’ current record on games that Alex sits out?

  4. A-Rod's Wingman says:

I need Kennedy, Lewis, and Lackey to get bombed today and AJ to have a good start.

  5. Kevin says:

Watching Cano play baseball is reason enough to smile.

  6. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I have a feeling today’s game will be blacked out for non-New Yorkers.

    • Pat D says:

I’m seeing it OK. That FOX blackout thing finally got removed a year or two ago.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Ah, I didn’t know that. That was the most irritating shit. Thanks for informing me.

        • Pat D says:

Yea, used to be if the Yankees weren’t playing on FOX and weren’t playing at 7 PM or later (which they never do for a home game, of course), I wouldn’t see it even with Extra Innings.

So I was quite happy when that was changed.

  7. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Is there a reason this game is a non-FOX game at 4pm?

  8. Epy0n says:

Wow Fernando Rodney just threw a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th to give the Rays the win. 0_0

  9. Pat D says:

  10. Cy Pettitte says:

defense has been beyond terrible lately

  11. Mike Axisa says:

Sheesh Grandy, that won’t get the haters off your back.

  12. Mike Axisa says:

That was a terrible pitch, lucky Bautista didn’t hit that to Westchester.

  13. Cy Pettitte says:

Granderson better hit a home run to make up for that

  14. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

well, that inning could’ve been worse…

    • MikeD says:

The way I see it, Burnett got burned on the misplay, but was lucky on the pitch he threw to Bautista. In other words, it should be 1-0.

  15. Accent Shallow says:

I do not approve of Drabek.

A single digit number on a pitcher? GTFO.

  16. First time lawng time says:

What happened to the ball hit to Grandy? Did the wind take it or did he just misplay it? It looked like it wa hit right to him so I couldn’t really tell.

  17. Mike Axisa says:

Just give Derek an aluminum bat already.

  18. Cy Pettitte says:

Jeter can’t even get stuff past the pitchers mound now

  19. That is now 263 plate appearances since Jeter’s last home run.

  20. JobaWockeeZ says:

That ESPN Red Sox commercial talking about sandwiches makes me want to kill a cat everytime I watch it.

  21. First time lawng time says:

Is Drabek one of those certified Yabkee killers with a chanegeup? Or am I thinking of someone else on the team?

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

Davis looked like all out panic, must be really bad out there

  23. MikeD says:

Seems to be a sun issue out in CF today.

  24. Accent Shallow says:

Looks like it’s not just Granderson.

  25. Mike Axisa says:

Now Davis had trouble on a ball in CF. Maybe it’s just the sun, which would explain Grandy’s miscue.

  26. tom says:

Apparently, batters are advised to hit to straightaway center toiay

  27. MikeD says:

Wau to go, Paul. Keep Kay quiet.

  28. Cy Pettitte says:

    nice AB. not.

  29. Cy Pettitte says:

    uhhhhhh wow, great range

  30. Xstar7 says:

Such great range by Jeter. Would it have killed him to at least dive for it?

  31. MikeD says:

So how many HRs does Cano have? The graphic when he came up to bat showed seven HRs, but Kay was talking about him having eight HRs in April.

  32. OldYanksFan says:

Jeter has no range at all. Jeez.

  33. mbonzo says:

Bad babip for AJ so far.

  34. Mike Axisa says:

    Encarnacion with the Jeterian hit.

  35. FIPster Doofus says:

    AJ is incredibly unlucky today.

  36. jetrer says:

    that hit was very Jeterian

  37. jetrer says:

damn Mike, You beat me to it

  38. Cy Pettitte says:

AJs stuff looks quite filthy today

  39. mbonzo says:

    Damn AJ! You scary!

  40. Xstar7 says:

    Blew it right by McCoy

  41. Cy Pettitte says:

I hope Paul is telling Swish this so he can fix it, lol

  42. First time lawng time says:

Wish Arod was playing instead of Jeter. (no offense to Jeter, who has looked actually decent the past weekish)

    • Rookie says:

He really has looked decent in the few snippets of him and the the few at bats that I’ve managed to see. And that’s surprised me.

  43. Guest says:

I know i don’t know what Im talking about, but it appears O’Neill is onto something with his observation that Swish is opening up his hips a little too soon, robbing himself of some power.

I wonder if Long and Swish (1)would agree, and (2) are they working on trying to fix it?

  44. Guest says:

    The Core One?

  45. Cy Pettitte says:

how did they not get Jorge? lmao, but I’ll take it

  46. MikeD says:

Anyone else mildly surprised that Cervelli is not in today’s lineup? He was just called up yesterday, today is a day game after a night game for Martin, and Girardi did say he wanted to get Cervelli in a game right away. This seemed like a logical game. They are going to have to develop a schedule to rest Martin if they don’t want him to break down.

  47. Xstar7 says:

Thanks for breaking up that double play Chavez.

  48. Mike Axisa says:

Oh look, a single with RISP. That will make some people happy.

  49. Xstar7 says:

Russell Martin is so much win

  50. Epy0n says:

Martin is looking like a hitter where if you make a mistake he will punish you.

  51. jetrer says:

    wrong guy up now

  52. FIPster Doofus says:

This sets up perfectly for a Jeter GIDP.

  53. donnieb says:

please jeter…just make 1 out. not two. thank you.

  54. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Please don’t GIDP Derek.

  55. Xstar7 says:

Derek Jeter up with the bases loaded again?

  56. jetrer says:

Its really sad to see Jeter get to the point where when he comes up people (me included) hope he only makes one out.

  57. OldYanksFan says:

    Take 6 pitches please.

  58. Cy Pettitte says:

Derek is the only one who wants Derek up there for those situations

  59. First time lawng time says:

Should I feel bad for saying I’d rather have anyone else in the lineup up but Jeter in this situation?

    DP feel inevitable.

  60. Mike Axisa says:

    Jorge with the wheels.

  61. jetrer says:

    wow … color me shocked

  62. tom says:

    Stellar at bat!

  63. Xstar7 says:

    Sac fly > double play

  64. OldYanksFan says:

My God! Jeter hit that ball more then 250′!

  65. bobtaco says:

    Grandy makes good.

  66. Mike Axisa says:

    Singles! Sac flies! More singles!

Where’d everyone from last night go?

  67. jetrer says:

    clutch hit … nice

  68. Cy Pettitte says:

nice piece of hitting, you are forgiven Curtis

  69. donnieb says:

Jeter deserves all the credit for that run. By not hitting into a DP he allowed Granderson to knock in that run.

That, People, is why he’s the Captain!

  70. jetrer says:

    that was outside

  71. Chip says:

  72. Rey22 says:

That outside strike is getting a bit ridiculous.

  73. tom says:

Drabek at 49 pitches after two?

  74. How Ya Doin says:

Pitch F/X had all those outside pitches to Teix in the right-hander’s batting box. Is it on the fritz or is the ump drunk?

  75. Mike Axisa says:

It would be nice if A.J. Burnett stopped throwing Jose Bautista fastballs.

  76. Reggie C. says:

How did bautista get this damn good? Its quite something really. Jays seem to have more than a 1-year wonder.

  77. jorge brosada says:

omg Jose Bautista needs to die

  78. Freddy's Mom says:

It’d be nice if AJ could locate a pitch anywhere near it’s supposed to be.

    AKA command.

  79. Xstar7 says:

Every single game will be broadcast on YES! EVERY SINGLE ONE

  80. FIPster Doofus says:

Wow. This ump is really bad.

  81. MikeD says:

Takes guts on the part of Swisher to take an outside pitch with this umpire.

  82. bobtaco says:

  83. Xstar7 says:

  84. Cy Pettitte says:

    Chavez ftw

  85. Mike Axisa says:

Another single with a man in scoring position! We’re in uncharted territory now people.

  86. Cy Pettitte says:

lol at that strike, come on this is a joke

  87. Xstar7 says:

This umpire just sucks. And it’s not just for the Yankees.

  88. Esteban says:

Yankees suck against the Blue Jays and they’re gonna get swept.

Can anyone guess who I am?

  89. Cy Pettitte says:

if Gardner can walk here with the bases loaded he will be back to form

  90. Freddy's Mom says:

    He of the soiled trousers?

  91. Mike Axisa says:

Another single with a man in scoring position! What a country.

  92. Xstar7 says:

    Clutch Gardner.

  93. jetrer says:

better to be lucky than good

  94. FIPster Doofus says:

These guys are too reliant on singles. You can’t win that way.

  95. Reggie C. says:

I wonder … does Drabek compare favorably to other RH starters in the AL East? He does seem to have a good 2-seamer.

  96. Esteban says:

Man I bet Girardi told them to stop hitting homeruns today and just try for singles.

  97. Xstar7 says:

Good job swinging at the first pitch Derek.

  98. jetrer says:

Jeter is getting good at avoiding doubleplays anyways

  99. Esteban says:

First smart thing Posada’s ever done on the basepaths. And yay for no DPs

  100. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Kay got me all excited

  101. Xstar7 says:

Damn it. Grandyman got my hopes up.

  102. Mike Axisa says:

That’s good trivia. Randy Choate has to be one.

  103. Esteban says:

Kay is struggling calling fly balls today.

  104. Epy0n says:

4 for 9 with RISP is more like it!

  105. Xstar7 says:

Usually this umpire calls that outside pitch a strike. Now he’s being inconsistent.

  106. jetrer says:

the umpire must be sobering up. That ball 4 was a strike earlier.

  107. Cy Pettitte says:

    lol Pendleton

  108. Tom Zig says:

Still waiting for Yahoo to add Alex Cobb, doesn’t seem like they will.

  109. tom says:

Ball/strike calls are getting close to random now.

  110. Xstar7 says:

At least this double play wasn’t in a big situation

  111. Tank the Frank says:

Take a look at what our friends at YES caught on camera in between innings a couple days ago.

Apparently Bartolo Colon’s twin brother visited the stadium with the promise of free, all you can eat turkey legs. Not for the faint of heart.

  112. Cy Pettitte says:

    a HR to the #9 hitter…..

  113. Mike Axisa says:

Sure, why not allow a homer to Mike McCoy.

  114. MikeD says:

If I catch a HR ball from an opposing team, I am not throwing it back.

  115. jorge brosada says:

    Fucking Rajai Davis

  116. Cuso says:

Nick Swisher, you just plain suck donkeyballs

  117. jetrer says:

    needed that

  118. jorge brosada says:

    Lolz. Suck on that Rajai

  119. MikeD says:

Is it really only the top of the fifth? Jeez.

  120. Cy Pettitte says:

how annoying is it that they knock the pitcher out in the 3rd and the game this close

  121. Xstar7 says:

I love how the Yankees are letting the Blue Jays creep back into this one.

  122. Cy Pettitte says:

    Russell FTW that was awesome

  123. jorge brosada says:

    Russell is awesome

  124. Chip says:

Ahhhh, catcher defense, that’s just fun

  125. Cy Pettitte says:

    classic BG AB

  126. Xstar7 says:

    I found Waldo

  127. Epy0n says:

Martin continues to prove hes the man!

  128. William Wallace says:

Is it ok to start hating a player you once cherished?

  129. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Can I has an offense?? Orly?

  130. Dino Velvet says:

    Russe!! Mart!n

  131. Epy0n says:

Shawn Camps change up looking nasty out there.

  132. bobtaco says:

Anyone want to pre-bash Girardi for taking AJ out?

  133. CBean says:

    Good job Joba!

  134. Epy0n says:

Oops I didn’t know you can just post the link and it does it self. Oh well.

  135. Cy Pettitte says:

    time to Soriano proof this

  136. Tom Zig says:

    Drob to the 8th?

  137. Frank says:

why bash Girardi? It was the right move

  138. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Does anyone else notice that the Blue Jays seem to have lots of players with long last names?

  139. A-Rod's Wingman says:

CANOBP!!!! Jesus, is this the only way he can get a bag without getting a hit?

  140. A-Rod's Wingman says:

    Fucken Robbie.

  141. Xstar7 says:

    Wow. Fuck you McCoy.

  142. Epy0n says:

What’s the over/under on Soriano blowing the 8th inning?

  143. jetrer says:

great baserunning by Cano. Halfway doesn’t mean halfway to home.

  144. Cy Pettitte says:

I can’t even watch this top of the 8th, Bautista vs. Soriano….

  145. jetrer says:

    feel free to bunt

  146. FIPster Doofus says:

This ump is a fucking idiot.

  147. Cy Pettitte says:

  148. Xstar7 says:

Phew. That fly ball by Rivera scared me for a second.

  149. jetrer says:

now let Arod hit for Posada

  150. Tom Zig says:

Seems like Mo will break the save record this year.

  151. jetrer says:

Consult your binder Joe. Now is the time to pinch hit Arod.

  152. Esteban says:

Jorge is getting gray wow. Can’t believe these guys are all old now.

  153. tom says:

Assuming Mo saves this, a win is a win and all go to bed happy.

But, sad fact: the Yankees didn’t manage a single hit after Drabek left the mound.

  154. Frank says:

Jays BP completely shut down Yanks- just 1 BB allowed.

  155. Esteban says:

how was that high to encarnacion?

  156. jorge brosada says:

    Jose Fucking Molina

  157. OldYanksFan says:

Mo’s pitches are up a bit.

  158. OldYanksFan says:

    Too fat. Me no likey.

  159. Cy Pettitte says:

“Put it on the left side”

    we’re still doing that?

  160. OldYanksFan says:

    POG to Martin?

  161. Esteban says:

So FTLT, were the Yankees lucky to not get swept?

  162. wow says:

good win. if only MLB.tv wasn’t being laggy… My view of the last out…

Kay: “Patterson with a lead off second… … … … wisher makes the play! Ball game!

  163. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  164. Xstar7 says:

    Yankees win! Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh Yankees Win!
