Game 24: Just win

By

Give us a reason to smile today, Robbie. (AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

The Blue Jays didn’t win last night’s game as much as the Yankees lost it. Not only did they not hit with men on base, they didn’t even bother to put together good at-bats. A sixth inning error on a Little League caliber rundown resulted in the two runs that ended up being the margin of victory. But then there’s this little factoid: Toronto is 8-1 in the first game of a series this season (they blew a seven-run lead in the one loss), but they’re just 5-12 in all other games. Hopefully that trend continues today. Here’s the starting lineup…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Eric Chavez, 3B
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Brett Gardner, LF

A.J. Burnett, SP

It’s just a routine day off for Alex Rodriguez, he’s available to pinch-hit if needed. It’s the rare non-FOX broadcast 4pm ET start on a Saturday today, as YES will carry the broadcast. Enjoy the game.

Apparently ARod’s legs are tired and he’s not using them to drive the ball. I caught Curry at the end of his diagnosis, so I may have incomplete information.

  • Epy0n

Halladay goes the distance once again.

    • Pat D

Only threw 107 pitches this time.

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

What’s the Yankees’ current record on games that Alex sits out?

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

I need Kennedy, Lewis, and Lackey to get bombed today and AJ to have a good start.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Lewis will get bombed, don’t worry.

      • Pat D

Did you get to watch The Office from Thursday yet?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I did yesterday. It was sad.

          • Pat D

Yes, I cried a little. Stupid sitcoms that I let pull at my emotions!

  • Kevin

Watching Cano play baseball is reason enough to smile.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I have a feeling today’s game will be blacked out for non-New Yorkers.

    • Pat D

I’m seeing it OK. That FOX blackout thing finally got removed a year or two ago.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Ah, I didn’t know that. That was the most irritating shit. Thanks for informing me.

        • Pat D

Yea, used to be if the Yankees weren’t playing on FOX and weren’t playing at 7 PM or later (which they never do for a home game, of course), I wouldn’t see it even with Extra Innings.

So I was quite happy when that was changed.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Is there a reason this game is a non-FOX game at 4pm?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It has to do with the Mets being on FOX at 1pm and the Yankees not wanting to play at 7pm on a Saturday.

  • Epy0n

Wow Fernando Rodney just threw a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th to give the Rays the win. 0_0

    • Cy Pettitte

Bill Plunkett posted this on twitter yesterday:
“Rays post-game notes say team is 25-3 in games followed by concerts. REO Speedwagon plays after tomorrow’s game.”

      26-3 now

      • Epy0n

        haha interesting stat.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

        REO Speedwagon reference!!!!

  • Pat D

    Well………………………..

  • Cy Pettitte

defense has been beyond terrible lately

    • Epy0n

That dink Jeter hit looked almost like he could of smashed it out of here.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sheesh Grandy, that won’t get the haters off your back.

    • Pat D

I thought that the Grandy hate had died down.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I pops up whenever Ian Kennedy has a good start.

    • MikeD

Are there really any people out there who still want Austin Jackson back instead of Granderson? I’m afraid of the answer, because I’m sure there are more than I think.

    • Accent Shallow

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen him make a defensive misplay.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That was a terrible pitch, lucky Bautista didn’t hit that to Westchester.

    • Pat D

Yea, that looked scary at first.

  • Cy Pettitte

Granderson better hit a home run to make up for that

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

well, that inning could’ve been worse…

    • MikeD

The way I see it, Burnett got burned on the misplay, but was lucky on the pitch he threw to Bautista. In other words, it should be 1-0.

  • Accent Shallow

I do not approve of Drabek.

A single digit number on a pitcher? GTFO.

  • First time lawng time

What happened to the ball hit to Grandy? Did the wind take it or did he just misplay it? It looked like it wa hit right to him so I couldn’t really tell.

    • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

Based on what just happened with Rajai Davis in center, I think the sun was in Granderson’s face, and he got a bad read on the ball.

      • First time lawng time

        Makes sense. Thanks.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Just give Derek an aluminum bat already.

    • Pat D

So he can hit hard choppers instead of soft choppers?

  • Cy Pettitte

Jeter can’t even get stuff past the pitchers mound now

  • http://www.secondavenuesagas.com Benjamin Kabak

That is now 263 plate appearances since Jeter’s last home run.

    • First time lawng time

Whats your call on when he gets his first HR?
      I’m thinking mid Juneish

      • Dino Velvet

        of which year?

  • JobaWockeeZ

That ESPN Red Sox commercial talking about sandwiches makes me want to kill a cat everytime I watch it.

    • Pat D

      Help control the cat population.

  • First time lawng time

Is Drabek one of those certified Yabkee killers with a chanegeup? Or am I thinking of someone else on the team?

    • JobaWockeeZ

      Romero. Cecil.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Drabek’s the typical meathead fireballer.

      • First time lawng time

        Is that good for us?

Lol Im not sure I understand what you mean sorry. Lol

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It should be good for them.

          • JobaWockeeZ

Well it would be good for us too seeing as we’re watching them rake.
            /nitpick’d

          • First time lawng time

            Thanks.

And I say us to refer to the Yankees since this is obviously a Yankee site and I mean our team, hence us. Also I feel the “them” could be ambiguous.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using first person to reference your team.

  • Cy Pettitte

Davis looked like all out panic, must be really bad out there

  • MikeD

Seems to be a sun issue out in CF today.

  • Accent Shallow

Looks like it’s not just Granderson.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Now Davis had trouble on a ball in CF. Maybe it’s just the sun, which would explain Grandy’s miscue.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Probably the 4pm sun, not many games played at that time in the Bronx.

  • tom

Apparently, batters are advised to hit to straightaway center toiay

  • MikeD

Wau to go, Paul. Keep Kay quiet.

  • Cy Pettitte

    nice AB. not.

  • Cy Pettitte

    uhhhhhh wow, great range

  • Xstar7

Such great range by Jeter. Would it have killed him to at least dive for it?

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      /pastadivingjeter

  • MikeD

So how many HRs does Cano have? The graphic when he came up to bat showed seven HRs, but Kay was talking about him having eight HRs in April.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Eight.

    • Cy Pettitte

that was Cano as a #4 hitter lifetime in the graphic

  • OldYanksFan

Jeter has no range at all. Jeez.

  • mbonzo

Bad babip for AJ so far.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Encarnacion with the Jeterian hit.

    • First time lawng time

Doesn’t a Jeterian hit imply a groundout to short?

      • Pat D

I thought it implied the soft line drive that lands in front of the rightfielder.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          It used too.

          • Pat D

Well I’ve still seen like…two of those this year.

      • jetrer

Jeterian out is groundout to short or bloop … Jeterian hit is swinging bunt to third

        • Rookie

I wonder if anybody in the majors has more weakly hit balls that die on the grass on the third base line and wind up being hits. It would be really amazing if he could manage an .800 OPS that way.

  • FIPster Doofus

    AJ is incredibly unlucky today.

  • jetrer

    that hit was very Jeterian

  • jetrer

damn Mike, You beat me to it

  • Cy Pettitte

AJs stuff looks quite filthy today

  • mbonzo

    Damn AJ! You scary!

  • Xstar7

    Blew it right by McCoy

  • Cy Pettitte

I hope Paul is telling Swish this so he can fix it, lol

  • First time lawng time

Wish Arod was playing instead of Jeter. (no offense to Jeter, who has looked actually decent the past weekish)

    • Rookie

He really has looked decent in the few snippets of him and the the few at bats that I’ve managed to see. And that’s surprised me.

  • Guest

I know i don’t know what Im talking about, but it appears O’Neill is onto something with his observation that Swish is opening up his hips a little too soon, robbing himself of some power.

I wonder if Long and Swish (1)would agree, and (2) are they working on trying to fix it?

  • Guest

    The Core One?

    • Cy Pettitte

Jeter + Jorge = the terrible two

  • Cy Pettitte

how did they not get Jorge? lmao, but I’ll take it

  • MikeD

Anyone else mildly surprised that Cervelli is not in today’s lineup? He was just called up yesterday, today is a day game after a night game for Martin, and Girardi did say he wanted to get Cervelli in a game right away. This seemed like a logical game. They are going to have to develop a schedule to rest Martin if they don’t want him to break down.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      Glad Martin’s in there…

      • MikeD

I think he hit that line drive up the middle as I hit the send button!

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Cervelli’s catching tomorrow. I’d rather have Martin catch A.J.’s 55-footers.

    • OldYanksFan

      Maybe because ARod is sitting.

  • Xstar7

Thanks for breaking up that double play Chavez.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Oh look, a single with RISP. That will make some people happy.

    • tom

      Thank god it wasn’t a 3-run homer

      • jon

        hate those rally killers

    • First time lawng time

Why would some people be unhappy? It scored a run and didn’t make an out.

  • Xstar7

Russell Martin is so much win

  • Epy0n

Martin is looking like a hitter where if you make a mistake he will punish you.

  • jetrer

    wrong guy up now

  • FIPster Doofus

This sets up perfectly for a Jeter GIDP.

    • Cy Pettitte

I think everyone on here just had that thought

now would be a nice time for your weekly hit, Jete

  • donnieb

please jeter…just make 1 out. not two. thank you.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

    Please don’t GIDP Derek.

  • Xstar7

Derek Jeter up with the bases loaded again?

  • jetrer

Its really sad to see Jeter get to the point where when he comes up people (me included) hope he only makes one out.

  • OldYanksFan

    Take 6 pitches please.

  • Cy Pettitte

Derek is the only one who wants Derek up there for those situations

    • donnieb

      and the opposition.

  • First time lawng time

Should I feel bad for saying I’d rather have anyone else in the lineup up but Jeter in this situation?

    DP feel inevitable.

    • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

      Posada?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Jorge with the wheels.

  • jetrer

    wow … color me shocked

  • tom

    Stellar at bat!

  • Xstar7

    Sac fly > double play

  • OldYanksFan

My God! Jeter hit that ball more then 250′!

  • bobtaco

    Grandy makes good.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Singles! Sac flies! More singles!

Where’d everyone from last night go?

    • Xstar7

I’m still here. But TSJC Troll Doppleganger isn’t.

    • First time lawng time

What’s wrong with singles an sac flies?

  • jetrer

    clutch hit … nice

  • Cy Pettitte

nice piece of hitting, you are forgiven Curtis

  • donnieb

Jeter deserves all the credit for that run. By not hitting into a DP he allowed Granderson to knock in that run.

That, People, is why he’s the Captain!

  • jetrer

    that was outside

  • Chip

    ROBOUMPS!

  • Rey22

That outside strike is getting a bit ridiculous.

    • Cy Pettitte

this game and last night the outside strikes to lefties have been atrocious

  • tom

Drabek at 49 pitches after two?

  • http://deleted How Ya Doin

Pitch F/X had all those outside pitches to Teix in the right-hander’s batting box. Is it on the fritz or is the ump drunk?

    • FIPster Doofus

      The latter.

    • http://twitter.com/waybj Brandon W

The ump is probably having some trouble picking up the ball with the light/shade transition, but no, those pitches are definitely in the other batters box. It’s awful.

      • Rookie

It was really bad. And supporting your hypothesis, I thought that he really did seem to stop with the outrageous calls once the shadows were gone — although I didn’t connect the two until I read your post.

    • Xstar7

The umpire definitely has a wide stoke zone.

      I’m talking to myself, apparently.

      • First time lawng time

I don’t think he reads RAB inbetween pitches…

    • Epy0n

      Fat ones at that.

  • Reggie C.

How did bautista get this damn good? Its quite something really. Jays seem to have more than a 1-year wonder.

  • Cy Pettitte

Seriously. You can’t string together a rally like this against a good pitcher in the playoffs.

  • Reggie C.

I wonder … does Drabek compare favorably to other RH starters in the AL East? He does seem to have a good 2-seamer.

        • MikeD

Did they give a number? I’m guessing Nick Johnson is one, assuming he’s considered to be a member of another team today.

          • MikeD

So compiling the above answers, we have Johnson (he did sign with the Indians, I believe), Rivera, Almonte, Contreras, Soriano, Matsui, Choate and Giambi. Anyone else?

            • Cuso

jeff Weaver is on Angels 40-man but in minors

              • MikeD

Is he injured? After Jered won his sixth game the other day, it got me to wondering what happened to Jeff. I couldn’t find any indication he was on any team’s roster, majors or minors.

Nick Johnson signed a minor league contract, but is still rehabbing. He probably doesn’t count. Did they ever give the answer?

  • Esteban

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Sure, why not allow a homer to Mike McCoy.

  • MikeD

If I catch a HR ball from an opposing team, I am not throwing it back.

    • Tank the Frank

Yeah I never understood that either. Maybe in a big game or rivalry/Red Sox game. But if I get a ball at a game I’m keeping it no matter how I get it.

Don’t give in to peer pressure.

    • Xstar7

Depends on who hit it. I’d keep a Jose Bautista home run ball. But Mike McCoy, not so much.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Definitely not. If you don’t want the ball, then give it to a kid.

      • A-Rod’s Wingman

I recall watching a game, I think it was against the Twins, the fans made some little kid throw the ball back. Kay got on them about it.

Anyone want to pre-bash Girardi for taking AJ out?

    • Xstar7

      So far it’s working out.

    • bobtaco

Anyone want to pre-bash Girardi for taking Joba out after 6 pitches?

      • jetrer

        yes

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Girardi blew the game in the top of the first when Jeter, Grandy, Tex and Cano didn’t hit back-to-back-to-back-to back homeruns.

  • CBean

    Good job Joba!

  • Epy0n

Oops I didn’t know you can just post the link and it does it self. Oh well.

  • Cy Pettitte

    time to Soriano proof this

  • Tom Zig

    Drob to the 8th?

  • Frank

why bash Girardi? It was the right move

    • bobtaco

Yeah, I think so too, AJ looked done even with the low pitch count…

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

Does anyone else notice that the Blue Jays seem to have lots of players with long last names?

    • baravelli

It’s a conspiracy by the infamous Toronto uniform letter manufacturing mafia.

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

CANOBP!!!! Jesus, is this the only way he can get a bag without getting a hit?

  • A-Rod’s Wingman

    Fucken Robbie.

  • Xstar7

    Wow. Fuck you McCoy.

  • Epy0n

What’s the over/under on Soriano blowing the 8th inning?

    • baravelli

How do you have an over/under on a yes/no proposition? No and a half?

    • A-Rod’s Wingman

      Second pitch.

  • jetrer

great baserunning by Cano. Halfway doesn’t mean halfway to home.

  • Cy Pettitte

I can’t even watch this top of the 8th, Bautista vs. Soriano….

  • jetrer

    feel free to bunt

  • FIPster Doofus

This ump is a fucking idiot.

  • Cy Pettitte

    phew

  • Xstar7

Phew. That fly ball by Rivera scared me for a second.

  • jetrer

now let Arod hit for Posada

  • Tom Zig

Seems like Mo will break the save record this year.

  • jetrer

Consult your binder Joe. Now is the time to pinch hit Arod.

    • Xstar7

If he doesn’t need to he won’t. Even with how Posada is struggling.

  • Esteban

Jorge is getting gray wow. Can’t believe these guys are all old now.

  • tom

Assuming Mo saves this, a win is a win and all go to bed happy.

But, sad fact: the Yankees didn’t manage a single hit after Drabek left the mound.

  • Frank

Jays BP completely shut down Yanks- just 1 BB allowed.

  • Esteban

how was that high to encarnacion?

    • jetrer

      because the ump is high

      • Xstar7

        Understatement

  • jorge brosada

    Jose Fucking Molina

  • OldYanksFan

Mo’s pitches are up a bit.

    • Xstar7

No they’re not. It’s the Umpire.

  • OldYanksFan

    Too fat. Me no likey.

  • Cy Pettitte

“Put it on the left side”

    we’re still doing that?

  • OldYanksFan

    POG to Martin?

    • jetrer

I vote for Jeter for not grounding into 2 possible DPs.

  • Esteban

So FTLT, were the Yankees lucky to not get swept?

  • wow

good win. if only MLB.tv wasn’t being laggy… My view of the last out…

Kay: “Patterson with a lead off second… … … … wisher makes the play! Ball game!

    ridiculous.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    AND THIS GAME IS OVAH!

  • Xstar7
