Open Thread: 2011 Futures Game

By

The timing sure worked out well this year. With the All-Star Game being played in Arizona, the Futures Game gets a late start and allows us East Coasters to watch it and the Yankees live without having to flip back and forth. There’s only one Yankees farmhand at the event, Double-A Trenton catcher Austin Romine. He isn’t starting the game but figures to enter in the fifth or sixth inning or so. Here are the starting lineups…

World Team (road)
Starling Marte, CF (Pirates)
Jose Altuve, 2B (Astros)
Yonder Alonso, 1B (Reds)
Dayan Viciedo, DH (White Sox)
Alexi Liddi, 3B (Mariners)
Alfredo Silverio, RF (Dodgers)
Chih-Tsien Chang, LF (Red Sox)
Wilin Rosario, C (Rockies)
Hak-Ju Lee, SS (Rays)

Julio Teheran, RHP (Braves)

USA Team (home)
Jason Kipnis, 2B (Indians)
Manny Machado, SS (Orioles)
Bryce Harper, LF (Nationals)
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B (Diamondbacks)
Devin Mesoraco, C (Reds)
Will Middlebrooks, 3B (Red Sox)
James Darnell, DH (Padres)
Wil Myers, RF (Royals)
Gary Brown, CF (Giants)

Tyler Skaggs, LHP (Diamondbacks)

The game starts at 6pm ET, hence the early open thread. You can watch it on ESPN2 of ESPN3.com, which has thoroughly impressed me with the video quality. The regular old ESPN Sunday Night Game has the Mets at the Giants (Pelfrey vs. Cain), but go ahead and talk about whatever your heart desires.

  1. Greg says:

    Damn Luis Gonzalez looks old.

  2. crawdaddie says:

Is that the same Tyler Skaggs that Arizona traded for in the Haren trade? If so, I thought they didn’t get anything for Haren?

    • JGS says:

Yes, but no one knew because he wasn’t named at the time. He was a PTBNL.

      • Jimmy McNulty says:

Yeah, that was an odd trade. I wonder what went on in the D-Backs war room. Was he just viewed as a lottery ticket or was he a guy that they wanted all along. I wonder who else was on the PTBNL list.

        • bexarama says:

I think didn’t he technically have to be listed as a PTBNL because he was very recently drafted? Like, it was a rule. I’m not sure. I have to think that’s the guy they wanted all along, not Joe Fucking Saunders.

  3. Adam Parker says:

The Futures Game: Next time it counts!

  4. Sheepmeister says:

Red sox have two starters, the yankees none. DOOOOOM!!! Cashman is teh sux

    /amidoingthisright

  5. Avi says:

Bryce Harper is 18 years old, not 19 as ESPN just said.

  6. Will says:

Keith Law looks like a little weasel.

  7. mike c says:

any yankees on the roster besides romine? no betances?

  8. bexarama says:

I don’t really get it. All I hear is that Yankee fans are horrible awful people, and then the Yankee fan who caught #3000 does something genuinely like, so nice it is unbelievable (you bet your ass I was asking them to pay my student loans or something), and oh he should’ve held the organization hostage because Derek Jeter did that last year, or something. Can the Yankees do anything right to the MSM and some of their “fans”?

    • Jimmy McNulty says:

No. The more pressing question is why do you give a shit?

    • Joseph Cecala says:

Just get used to it, the Yankees could donate 100 mil to a charity and still get shit for it.

    • mike c says:

I’m not outraged by the kid… I’ll be outraged if the family of the guy who fell at arlington doesn’t sue the crap out of that team though

      • BigTimeBartolo says:

they don’t really have a case if the ballpark meets current safety regulations though…

        • Jimmy McNulty says:

That and there’s a waiver on the ticket. I’m sure the Rangers will do what they can to help the family, though. A la the Dodgers and that guy who got beaten within an inch of his life.

        • mike c says:

I’d argue that it’s a design flaw… clearly there was an issue if a fan could fall down a 20 foot shaft off to the side of the bleachers, the rangers wouldn’t be fixing it now if they didn’t have to

          • Rick says:

You can’t use the fact that they’re changing the railing now at trial though (unless Texas has a substantially different rule than the Federal Rules of Evidence).

      • Dale Mohorcic says:

Why would you be outraged by that?

    • Brooklyn Ed says:

I would had asked to be Cashman’s executive assistant, and get paid for it. Earn the $ rather than asking for a check.

Seriously what the dude did was very classy and he shouldn’t get blasted for it.

    • Dino Velvet says:

good thing that Yankee fan didn’t have Scott Boras as an agent.

  9. BigTimeBartolo says:

Holy shit, I want Matt Moore on the Yankees

  10. Dino Velvet says:

Jeter 3,000 = only 2nd shortstop to join the club, the other being Honus Wagner.

  11. BigYank1 says:

This Moore kid from TB looks deadly…

  12. Kevin G. says:

Eight Yankee All-Stars? Damn. What’s the most the Yankees have ever had in the ASG?

  13. medale says:

I hope Paul Goldschmidt is getting a good look at his surroundings. He should be playing there very shortly.

  14. Jimmy McNulty says:

Ahhh…Grant Green, my dream scenario a few drafts ago.

  15. ultimate913 says:

    I have a question, Mike.

By your calculations, what did Sabathia’s fWAR increase to after today’s performance?

It was 4.4 before the game.

  16. Dino Velvet says:

    where’s Casey Kelley?

wasn’t the future first ballot Hall of famer supposed to start for both team?

  17. Luca10 says:

    Help needed here.

Dynasty league. It’s worth trading Gary Sanchez (yes, that Gary Sanchez)+Nishioka (3y contract at 5M per)+Chris Carter (Oakland)+Daniel Corcino (Reds prospect) for Matt Kemp (3y contract at 5M per)+Jhonny Peralta (1y)?

  18. Jimmy McNulty says:

    Tim Beckham is good again?

  19. Dead Horse says:

Jeter’s WAR basically doubled after his 5-5 performance. That’s hilarious.

  20. medale says:

Alex White and Drew Pomeranz should put the Indians in shape with a good 1-2 in 2013.

  21. dennis says:

Moore was an 8TH ROUND PICK, wtf how did no one scout him? did he gain like 10 mph on his fastball?

  22. medale says:

Harper has a hell of an arm.

  23. Naved says:

    Harper’s arm….0_0 that was a freaking cannon.

  24. ESPN bringing the gut punches with the 2001 mention. I don’t understand how they got a 2004 reference in the goddamn Futures Game though.

  25. nick says:

what a double kick in the nads, showing the bloop hit off Mo, then completely missing Romine’s hit, thanks ESPN.

  26. IRF says:

Of course they have to show 2001 Game 7 while Romine is at bat.

  27. jon says:

    yikes 98 mph

  28. BigTimeBartolo says:

    Arodys on the mound

  29. Naved says:

The ARod that we lost :( damn that Javy trade

    • Brian S. says:

I have nightmares over that trade. I was all for it when it happened but imagine if we kept Joba in the rotation(along with Hughes) instead of trading for Javy…Things could have been so much better.

    • mike c says:

I don’t think cashman will make that trade again… none of the yankees top pitching prospects are worth trading now, unless it’s part of a package for a young 1-2 type starter

  30. Cy Pettitte says:

    Arodys :(

yay for Romine getting a hit

  31. Kramerica Industries says:

I noted in the Thursday recap post the Yankees’ recent troubles against the Rays, and that they did concern me as far as this weekend is concerned.

I still feel like the Rays are the pest that is going to bug the shit out of this team for the remaining 13 head-to-heads this season, but kudos to this team for doing what they seem to do best in 2011, and win the final two games after dropping the first.

However it gets done, 2 of 3 against quality foes is a sufficient result. Three head-to-heads wiped by the boards, margin increased, all resulting in success here.

  32. Cy Pettitte says:

Austin taking care of business when Harper couldn’t. Fucking badass.

  33. BigTimeBartolo says:

Romine with the game tying RBI, yay

  34. Jimmy McNulty says:

Austin Romine: A Real American Hero.

  35. Nifty little play by Romine back there.

  36. DERP says:

    Nice catch by Romine.

  37. Hall and Nokes says:

    USA! USA!

  38. DERP says:

    Romine for MVP!!!

  39. Cy Pettitte says:

kicked some World ass and Romine had an awesome game, that’s a good day.

  40. Zack D says:

So Matt Harvey to the 8th right?

    /NYmedia

  41. Xstar7 says:

Brian Wilson really needs to trim that beard. It’s getting out of control.

  42. Karl Krawfid says:

Mariners are out of da race.

Can we have our King Felix now please?
