Open Thread: 2011 Futures Game

By

The timing sure worked out well this year. With the All-Star Game being played in Arizona, the Futures Game gets a late start and allows us East Coasters to watch it and the Yankees live without having to flip back and forth. There’s only one Yankees farmhand at the event, Double-A Trenton catcher Austin Romine. He isn’t starting the game but figures to enter in the fifth or sixth inning or so. Here are the starting lineups…

World Team (road)
Starling Marte, CF (Pirates)
Jose Altuve, 2B (Astros)
Yonder Alonso, 1B (Reds)
Dayan Viciedo, DH (White Sox)
Alexi Liddi, 3B (Mariners)
Alfredo Silverio, RF (Dodgers)
Chih-Tsien Chang, LF (Red Sox)
Wilin Rosario, C (Rockies)
Hak-Ju Lee, SS (Rays)

Julio Teheran, RHP (Braves)

USA Team (home)
Jason Kipnis, 2B (Indians)
Manny Machado, SS (Orioles)
Bryce Harper, LF (Nationals)
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B (Diamondbacks)
Devin Mesoraco, C (Reds)
Will Middlebrooks, 3B (Red Sox)
James Darnell, DH (Padres)
Wil Myers, RF (Royals)
Gary Brown, CF (Giants)

Tyler Skaggs, LHP (Diamondbacks)

The game starts at 6pm ET, hence the early open thread. You can watch it on ESPN2 of ESPN3.com, which has thoroughly impressed me with the video quality. The regular old ESPN Sunday Night Game has the Mets at the Giants (Pelfrey vs. Cain), but go ahead and talk about whatever your heart desires.

    Damn Luis Gonzalez looks old.

  • crawdaddie

Is that the same Tyler Skaggs that Arizona traded for in the Haren trade? If so, I thought they didn’t get anything for Haren?

    • http://www.twitter.com/jordansmed JGS

Yes, but no one knew because he wasn’t named at the time. He was a PTBNL.

      • Jimmy McNulty

Yeah, that was an odd trade. I wonder what went on in the D-Backs war room. Was he just viewed as a lottery ticket or was he a guy that they wanted all along. I wonder who else was on the PTBNL list.

        • http://www.youcantpredictbaseball.com bexarama

I think didn’t he technically have to be listed as a PTBNL because he was very recently drafted? Like, it was a rule. I’m not sure. I have to think that’s the guy they wanted all along, not Joe Fucking Saunders.

          • Jimmy McNulty

Yeah, you’re right about the recent draftee rule. Is there a minimum as to how long the PTBNL list has to be?

            • crawdaddie

It has to be more than 12 months after he signs his first pro contract.

              • Jimmy McNulty

Yes, I know that…but can you have a PTBNL list that’s only a player long?

  • Adam Parker

The Futures Game: Next time it counts!

  • Sheepmeister

Red sox have two starters, the yankees none. DOOOOOM!!! Cashman is teh sux

    /amidoingthisright

    • Dead Horse

If you mean beating me up then yes.

  • Avi

Bryce Harper is 18 years old, not 19 as ESPN just said.

  • Will

Keith Law looks like a little weasel.

    • Dino Velvet

      you beat me to it.

he makes nate silver look like Steve McQueen.

    • MikeD

Klaw is better off writing. He does not quite have a TV personality.

  • mike c

any yankees on the roster besides romine? no betances?

  • http://www.youcantpredictbaseball.com bexarama

I don’t really get it. All I hear is that Yankee fans are horrible awful people, and then the Yankee fan who caught #3000 does something genuinely like, so nice it is unbelievable (you bet your ass I was asking them to pay my student loans or something), and oh he should’ve held the organization hostage because Derek Jeter did that last year, or something. Can the Yankees do anything right to the MSM and some of their “fans”?

    • Jimmy McNulty

No. The more pressing question is why do you give a shit?

      • http://www.youcantpredictbaseball.com bexarama

        b/c double standards bother me.

        • Jimmy McNulty

If you wanna bitch about double standards, at least bitch about the meaningful ones. Follow Politics.

    • Joseph Cecala

Just get used to it, the Yankees could donate 100 mil to a charity and still get shit for it.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

“Yankees donate $100M to charity, show up other 29 teams.”

    • mike c

I’m not outraged by the kid… I’ll be outraged if the family of the guy who fell at arlington doesn’t sue the crap out of that team though

      • BigTimeBartolo

they don’t really have a case if the ballpark meets current safety regulations though…

        • Jimmy McNulty

That and there’s a waiver on the ticket. I’m sure the Rangers will do what they can to help the family, though. A la the Dodgers and that guy who got beaten within an inch of his life.

        • mike c

I’d argue that it’s a design flaw… clearly there was an issue if a fan could fall down a 20 foot shaft off to the side of the bleachers, the rangers wouldn’t be fixing it now if they didn’t have to

          • Rick

You can’t use the fact that they’re changing the railing now at trial though (unless Texas has a substantially different rule than the Federal Rules of Evidence).

      • Dale Mohorcic

Why would you be outraged by that?

        • mike c

because a kid lost his dad at a baseball game because they built an unsafe stadium… his family deserves no less

          • JobaWockeeZ

…It’s not unsafe. The fan ignored the safety precautions and went for the ball.

            • mike c

a gaping hole is unsafe, whether or not you put a small sign in front of it that said “don’t fall in”

    • Brooklyn Ed

I would had asked to be Cashman’s executive assistant, and get paid for it. Earn the $ rather than asking for a check.

Seriously what the dude did was very classy and he shouldn’t get blasted for it.

    • Dino Velvet

good thing that Yankee fan didn’t have Scott Boras as an agent.

  • BigTimeBartolo

Holy shit, I want Matt Moore on the Yankees

  • Dino Velvet

Jeter 3,000 = only 2nd shortstop to join the club, the other being Honus Wagner.

    • http://www.youcantpredictbaseball.com bexarama

Cal Ripken Jr.? (Also Robin Yount, but I understand if you don’t wanna count him)

      • Dino Velvet

ripken played 23% of his games at different positions. Jeter has has played 99% of starts at short.

  • BigYank1

This Moore kid from TB looks deadly…

    • BigTimeBartolo

      throwin 98-100 like it’s nothing…

      • Jimmy McNulty

Why doesn’t he get Strasburg’s hype?

        • BigTimeBartolo

He’s not quite at Strasburg’s level but i mean he is considered to be one of, if not the best lefty pitching prospect in the minors. I think Strasburg had better off-speed stuff/command as well.

        • http://www.youcantpredictbaseball.com bexarama

I think he’s not too young for the level he’s at? He’s not even in AAA yet. Not trying to dis the kid, he’s awesome, but just offering an explanation

          • Jimmy McNulty

Oh, oops. I thought he was only 20.

  • Kevin G.

Eight Yankee All-Stars? Damn. What’s the most the Yankees have ever had in the ASG?

  • medale

I hope Paul Goldschmidt is getting a good look at his surroundings. He should be playing there very shortly.

  • Jimmy McNulty

Ahhh…Grant Green, my dream scenario a few drafts ago.

  • ultimate913

    I have a question, Mike.

By your calculations, what did Sabathia’s fWAR increase to after today’s performance?

It was 4.4 before the game.

  • Dino Velvet

    where’s Casey Kelley?

wasn’t the future first ballot Hall of famer supposed to start for both team?

  • Luca10

    Help needed here.

Dynasty league. It’s worth trading Gary Sanchez (yes, that Gary Sanchez)+Nishioka (3y contract at 5M per)+Chris Carter (Oakland)+Daniel Corcino (Reds prospect) for Matt Kemp (3y contract at 5M per)+Jhonny Peralta (1y)?

    • Jimmy McNulty

Are you getting Matt Kemp? If so, yes.

      • Luca10

Yep. Trying to pry away Peralta and Kemp for the stretch run.

  • Jimmy McNulty

    Tim Beckham is good again?

  • Dead Horse

Jeter’s WAR basically doubled after his 5-5 performance. That’s hilarious.

  • medale

Alex White and Drew Pomeranz should put the Indians in shape with a good 1-2 in 2013.

    • dennis

      masterson is also pretty good.

  • dennis

Moore was an 8TH ROUND PICK, wtf how did no one scout him? did he gain like 10 mph on his fastball?

    • Jimmy McNulty

      Cashman just sucks at drafting.

    • Zack D

I know nothing about him pre-draft, but 1st round talent HS guys fall that low in most drafts. Betances was also an 8th round pick, due to a strong commit to college.

  • medale

Harper has a hell of an arm.

  • Naved

    Harper’s arm….0_0 that was a freaking cannon.

  • http://twitter.com/Carlosologist_7 Carlosologist

ESPN bringing the gut punches with the 2001 mention. I don’t understand how they got a 2004 reference in the goddamn Futures Game though.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Meh, Arizona is the host team and that’s the greatest moment in the history of the franchise. We’ll see that play quite a bit over the next few days.

    • JobaWockeeZ

      It’s ESPN. Nuff said.

  • nick

what a double kick in the nads, showing the bloop hit off Mo, then completely missing Romine’s hit, thanks ESPN.

  • IRF

Of course they have to show 2001 Game 7 while Romine is at bat.

  • jon

    yikes 98 mph

  • BigTimeBartolo

    Arodys on the mound

  • Naved

The ARod that we lost :( damn that Javy trade

    • Brian S.

I have nightmares over that trade. I was all for it when it happened but imagine if we kept Joba in the rotation(along with Hughes) instead of trading for Javy…Things could have been so much better.

    • mike c

I don’t think cashman will make that trade again… none of the yankees top pitching prospects are worth trading now, unless it’s part of a package for a young 1-2 type starter

  • Cy Pettitte

    Arodys :(

yay for Romine getting a hit

  • Kramerica Industries

I noted in the Thursday recap post the Yankees’ recent troubles against the Rays, and that they did concern me as far as this weekend is concerned.

I still feel like the Rays are the pest that is going to bug the shit out of this team for the remaining 13 head-to-heads this season, but kudos to this team for doing what they seem to do best in 2011, and win the final two games after dropping the first.

However it gets done, 2 of 3 against quality foes is a sufficient result. Three head-to-heads wiped by the boards, margin increased, all resulting in success here.

  • Cy Pettitte

Austin taking care of business when Harper couldn’t. Fucking badass.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Wooo Romine!

  • BigTimeBartolo

Romine with the game tying RBI, yay

    • Jimmy McNulty

      go ahead*

  • Jimmy McNulty

Austin Romine: A Real American Hero.

    • Brian S.

He’s not slugging a lot but he has a solid .352 OBP this season.

      • mike c

how is his defense? I don’t know how to read catcher stats

      • BigTimeBartolo

What do you think his ceiling is, Russell Martin?

        • jon

before he was hurt martin was a gold glove, silver slugging, all star

thats a pretty damn good player

          • mike c

agreed his defense and work with the pitching staff makes him a valuable player even if he’s not hitting

          • jon

            a bit further

from 06 to 08 Mauer lead all catchers with a 15.8 WAR

martin was 2nd with 13.3 WAR

            jorge was 10.5

            • BigTimeBartolo

Yeah i know Martin was pretty beastly for a few years on the Dodgers, I guess i’m comparing more to the current Russ-Mart. Who else would be a good current mlb comp then?

          • Hall and Nokes

Yeah, I’d take that ceiling, from Austin Romine at least. Jesus’ ceiling is Jesus Christ.

        • JobaWockeeZ

.850ish OPS player with average defense with 20 HR power. That’s solid for a catcher.

          • jon

            thats Victor Martinez

ill take that all day every day

            • JobaWockeeZ

Well he hasn’t reached it yet…

            • mike c

saying that victor martinez has average defense is laughable… and the idea of romine averaging around .850 OPS in the major leagues is also…. you realize that would be making him one of the best hitting catchers of all time?

        • JobaWockeeZ

Romine by most accounts is said to have average defense but can stick at the position long term. He’s no defensive whiz.

  • http://twitter.com/Carlosologist_7 Carlosologist

Nifty little play by Romine back there.

  • DERP

    Nice catch by Romine.

  • Hall and Nokes

    USA! USA!

  • DERP

    Romine for MVP!!!

  • Cy Pettitte

kicked some World ass and Romine had an awesome game, that’s a good day.

  • Zack D

So Matt Harvey to the 8th right?

    /NYmedia

  • http://johnsterling.blogspot.com/ Xstar7

Brian Wilson really needs to trim that beard. It’s getting out of control.

  • Karl Krawfid

Mariners are out of da race.

Can we have our King Felix now please?
