Game 129: Hurricane A.J.

Q: What will do more damage this weekend, A.J. Burnett‘s start or Hurricane Irene?

Hurricane A.J. will hit the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the country just ahead of Hurricane Irene, as Burnett takes the mound tonight against the Orioles. We’re living through a little déjá vu with Burnett right now. He’s tanking in August, with no signs of recovery on the horizon. This won’t be his last one, either; he’s the only one who will be on proper rest to face Boston on Wednesday.

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Curtis Granderson, CF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Nick Swisher, RF
7. Jorge Posada, DH
8. Russell Martin, C
9. Brett Gardner, LF

And on the mound, number thirty-four, A.J. Burnett.

  1. A-Rod's Wingman says:

I’m bracing myself for a lost, that tends to be the outcome more often than not with this hunk of shit on the mound.

  2. Cy Pettitte says:

this would be a good night for one of those fabled AJ Burnett 2 hit shutouts.

  3. Bronx Byte says:

The Yankees will need more runs than they scored yesterday to keep ahead of the damage Burnett will allow.
Girardi should remove him the first time a runner is on base.

  4. A-Rod's Wingman says:

They should let Noesi take this asshole’s spot once or twice in September.

  5. Cuso says:

Number 34 on your program, Number __ in your heart.

    • mike c says:

49, we’ll always have that WS game 2

      • Nuke LaDoosh says:

We’ll also always have 8/7/09 start against Beckett and the Sawx. That was the amazingly pitched game that went to 14 or 15 innings and Arod won it with a Walk Off HR. That was the game where the Yanks made the new home really HOME.

  6. A-Rod's Wingman says:

If AJ gets the start against Boston an AJ/Lackey match up might cause the universe to collapse under a vortex of suck.

  7. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

What about coming back from a 7-1 deficit? that was pretty cool.

  8. virginia yankee says:

It is OBVIOUS THE BRAIN TRUST TAKES NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACTUALLY IMPROVING THE TEAM – Coffee Joe is not going to embarrass a “gamer” a veteran and all around Nice Guy like AJ — it doesn’t matter that A.J. is nearly unhittable when he stays closed and crap when he flies open — run all the tape you want, his balance and finish demonstrate quite clearly the results. We assume his pitching coaches KNOW and HE knows – so if he refuses to execute or CAN”T, then tough SIT — BUT not Our Brain Trust — they have decided 1st or 2nd in the division is playoffs, and losing with AJ doesn’t close either position — no thought about team chemistry, belief we can win every time out, pressure on the guy before and after him TO MUST WIN, or Bull Pen use to clean up the mess, understanding by YOUNG PLAYERS that PERFORMANCE is the MAIN ARBITER of playing time, or a TRADE or Call-up to ADD a WINNER as opposed to a pitcher–
Geez go get Weaver, or Vasquz, or LaPoint back –

  9. Gonzo says:

I love Bob Dylan. Great song, great album, great career.

    • JohnnyC says:

Dylan one of rock music’s pillars of true greatness. However, would’ve been nice if he hadn’t chain-smoked 80 cigs a day for decades. Might still be able to actually kind of sing.

      • Gonzo says:

I remember hearing a rumor that his voice was shot after the Rolling Thunder tour. All the coke and performing had done him in after that supposedly.

I used to have a bootleg CD from that tour. He really did let it all out.

      • Sweet Dick Willie says:

Might still be able to actually kind of sing.

        Wait. When could he sing?

He was a generational talent as a songwriter/poet, but a singer? Eh, not so much.

        • Rainbow Connection says:

LOL at dumb sports fans passing judgement on artists.

          • nsalem says:

For all you know some of the “dumb sports fans” on this site may be prominent artists. Though a big fan, i never thought Dylan sang particularly well. However there were several live performances where he did sing with clarity, range and attentiveness that he usually did exhibit throughout his career. HIs 1964 Town Hall performance (which I believe is available on CD) and singing on certain songs on Nashville Skyline (check out One More Night) would be a couple of the good examples. I think he is an incredible artist who will still be relevant hundeds of years from now.

  10. Captain Beatty says:

Gonna need another 3 grand slam effort tonight. We’re probably gonna drop a game this weekend and tonight will be it.

    • nsalem says:

Good weekend to take up surfing. I would pay for your lessons.

    • Slugger27 says:

aj starts are the worst. aj pitches terrible, girardi says hes sticking with him, everyone is pissed that aj sucks, first time lawng time tells us his consistently shitty starts are actually good ones, and that we’re the ones that are crazy. then everyone gets ready for nova to come up and pitch well the next day

at least lately it seems that way

  11. Nuke LaDoosh says:

wow, Jim Palmer just had a really tough time communicating on the O’s broadcast…all choked up.
1979 was my first Full Season as a Yankee fanatic (reading all the Spring Training articles, watching all the games on Channel 11, balling when Thurman died, etc.) Mike Flannagan was dominant that year, one the Cy Young. RIP.

  12. Cy Pettitte says:

    fuck the shift.

  13. Greg says:

When did Joe Maddon start managing the O’s?

  14. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Fuck yo shift

  15. Greg says:

The shift on Tex is unsurprising but the shift on Grandy might be starting a trend

  16. Melky says:

The no-hitter and the perfect game are gone.

  17. Melky says:

Scratch that, the perfect game is gone…

  18. Jesse says:

This game has loss written all over it.

  19. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Is there a Yankee roll call at Camden yards that I hear? awesome.

  20. Cuso says:

Lol. Now AJ has the excuse of any runs this inning being unearned…

    rut roh

  21. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

How is that on Russ? Jeter just missed it.

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

error on Martin? lol. that’s ridiculous.

  23. Simon says:

Just made some french-toast. Wish I could enjoy them while watching a nice pitching performance….

  24. Nuke LaDoosh says:

  25. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    <3 Robbie

  26. Cy Pettitte says:

    wow Robbie is just amazing.

  27. Greg says:

    Only in an AJ start.

  28. Dino Velvet says:

Woah. Mike Flanagan committed suicide. Yikes.

  29. Ethan says:

Would pedroia have been able to make that play that ended the first? That’s something that doesn’t show up on the boxscore but is important for the game.

  30. Nuke LaDoosh says:

Jim Palmer: “Cano’s pretty much become the best all around 2B in baseball.” Guess he’s not impressed with Grit, and will never send his resume to NESPN.

  31. Rainbow Connection says:

My bum constantly wants to make things from scratch and throw/spit them at AJ.

  32. Will says:

Runs for AJ please. Please don’t make Tommy Hunter look even remotely dominant tonight.

  33. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    wow AJ

  34. Nuke LaDoosh says:

I think we should focus on AJ’s strengths…here goes: He has good posture.

  35. Dela G says:

  36. Cy Pettitte says:

    ugh. AJ is the WORST.

  37. Mykey says:

  38. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    face freaking palm

  39. Greg says:

    That was a weird swing.

  40. Mykey says:

    Ah yes, the flood gates.

  41. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Please don’t do this AJ

  42. Cy Pettitte says:

    and here we gooooooooo.

just throw at someone, get yourself tossed, and let Noesi take over AJ.

  43. Will says:

AJ please take the Luke Hochevar route and retire from baseball. You’re the anti-thesis of what a Yankee should be, which is a loser and not a winner.

  44. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

CBS Sportsline has listed the last 3 AJ pitches as knuckleballs.

  45. Greg says:

    Rain harder!

  46. Captain Beatty says:

Dump this piece of garbage already.

  47. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Put swish on the mound

  48. Mykey says:

Dang groundhog saw it’s shadow again.

  49. Will says:

Every pitcher in the Yankee system > AJ Burnett

  50. Grit for Brains says:

Short leash please…I don’t like hating on AJ but this is getting old

    • Will says:

Why don’t you like hating on him? He’s a terrible pitcher who is bringing down our team with his pathetic performance. There’s plenty to hate on.

  51. your mom says:

I’m calling a clutch Angle hit there.

  52. Melky says:

This is awful. Make AJ a one-inning reliever. He got through the first fine.

  53. Captain Beatty says:

What a piece of garbage. If we weren’t facing a bad pitcher it’d already be over. Take him out and salvage what’s left of the game.

  54. Greg says:

Now that one wasnt on AJ, but he is still starting to implode.

  55. tom says:

4 straight extra base hits. Against the Orioles.

Burnett is drifting into Ed Whitson territory. You’d like to support him, but he makes it damn near impossible.

  56. Regis says:

    I hate this guy.

  57. swishers fauxhawk says:

Fun fact: AJ has not had a start with less than 3 runs allowed since June 29th.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I was at that game, AJ got a standing ovation from most of the crowd on the way out. I never dreamed that I’d be attending Burnett’s last decent start of the season.

  58. AJSux says:

God I wish someone would just shoot this guy. Not kill him but injure him just bad enough that he couldn’t pitch anymore.

  59. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

So how many innings can Noesi pitch tonight?

  60. your mom says:

Okay so this is where AJ completely loses control.

  61. Rockstar4Life says:

I can’t wait to see what excuse Cashman makes for him. Sorry Brian we have all taken a puff from the objective pipe and it still tells us AJ sucks.

  62. Melky says:

This is hysterical. Just take him out already.

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

oh my god get this stupid fuck out of the game.

  64. Dela G says:

Can we just eat the contract? please?

  65. Captain Beatty says:

LOL! This is just comical. We all knew he would implode. And they keep trotting him out there. Insanity.

  66. Mykey says:

It’s people like AJ Burnett that give me hope that I may one day pitch for the Yankees. Thanks AJ!

  67. Regis says:

    Seriously? C’Mon, WTF?

  68. BigTimeBartolo says:

AJ Burnett can go fuck himself. I’m seriously so sick of this shit. This guy doesn’t deserve to be paid 15 million a year or whatever his fucking salary is…

  69. ItsATarp says:

Good bye AJ…oh wait more BP

  70. Cuso says:

    Wow. just wow

  71. Melky says:

This is the worst pitching performance I have ever seen. No joke.

  72. Captain Beatty says:

  73. Cy Pettitte says:

    god dammit get him out

  74. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Hahahaha that’s pathetic.

  75. Rockstar4Life says:

What’s the MLB record for doubles in an inning? AJ has to be shooting for that.

  76. Greg says:

    Implosion complete.

  77. Mickey Scheister says:

AJ Sucks…that is all. Release him NOW.

  78. Dela G says:

you’ve got to be fucking kidding me

why does AJ suck so much?

    jesus christ

  79. Stratman9652 says:

This is amazing. What can you really say?

  80. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    Holy Shit.

  81. Rainbow Connection says:

Just let AJ rest for the remainder of the season.

  82. Coolerking101 says:

AJ’s head is about to explode.

  83. Regis says:

    Smoke the pipe!

  84. Steve O says:

Wow. How could this be any worse?

  85. YankeesJunkie says:

Burnett is the greatest pitcher EVAR!!!!

  86. Karl Krawfid says:

    5 game set.

    Hey Thanks AJ. Fucking scrub.

  87. jay h says:

i just want to point out that we’re not out of it yet. I said it in the 3rd yesterday and i’ll say it again now. The yankees are never out of a game in the first 3 innings

  88. Ivan says:

Apparently the Yankees are in a giving mood when they send AJ Burnett to the Mound…

  89. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

This is actually a blessing in disguise. No way Burnett starts another game (or makes the playoff roster) after this.

    • tom says:

I thought that earlier in the week. He’s like boss’ nephew at this point; he can’t seem to do anything to cost him his job.

  90. Jamey says:

I think Cashman should reconsider his stance on calling up Banuelos. They’re going to need a #2 starter.

  91. bobtaco says:

  92. Captain Beatty says:

That’ll be the ballgame. It’s time to just pull the plug. Stash him away in the bullpen and eat the cost in the offseason. He’s atrocious.

  93. Cy Pettitte says:

    rain harder please.

  94. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Save us Irene

  95. Coolerking101 says:

Grounder to AJ….and we’ve have total meltdown.

  96. Bobert Boberson says:

    My mind is blown.

    Completely blown.

I mean… Blown like a porno movie staring Ava Devine and Bree Olson kind of blown.

  97. Chip says:

Wow, it’s getting worse and worse

  98. Dela G says:

will there ever be an out?

  99. YankeesJunkie says:

I am just laughing at this point

  100. Melky says:

Really Michael Kay? I heard “I suck balls” not “it’s a wet ball”.

  101. Rainbow Connection says:

Screw you, Jeter, for lobbying for the AJ signing.

  102. your mom says:

AJ is gonna have to take one for the team. Can’t take him out right? Our bullpen will be taxed for the whole series. Pray for rain!!!

  103. BigTimeBartolo says:

omg this guy is a fucking disaster

  104. Coolerking101 says:

    Grounder to AJ….meltdown confirmed.

  105. Ethan says:

    Please RAIN MORE!!

  106. Ivan says:

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha Thats all I can do at this point right now…just laugh it off….

  107. Steve O says:

Girardi I leaving in A.J. to total get an ass beating.

  108. Cuso says:

    April Fools!

    oh wait

  109. Rockstar4Life says:

And why is he still out there? There is no reason at all to just give up a game after 1.1 innings. Fuck Girardi too.

  110. Frank says:

This guy is a fucking joke. I wonder if Cash is smoking that reality pipe he was talking about?

  111. Chip says:

  112. KenC says:

  113. Klemy says:

    Oh, my lord.

  114. BK2ATL says:

    Exhibit ZZ.

    Case closed.

    Get rid of him tonight.

  115. Burnett has to get bounced from the rotation after this… right?

  116. Charles says:

    Please start raining…AJ you’re pathetic

  117. bonestock94 says:

    My objective pipe is failing

  118. A-Rod's Wingman says:

I hope AJ gets caught in the Hurricane.

  119. Captain Beatty says:

Hey Girardi, by all means keep trotting this guy out there. When’s his next scheduled start? Against Boston? That should go over well.

  120. Hall and Nokes says:

Well it looks like Irene will be the second costliest disaster to blow through Maryland this weekend.

  121. theyankeewarrior says:

Good to see AJ battling out there. Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, he goes out and gives it his all. Seriously, I’ve completely lost it with this fucking guy.

I’d clean out my bank account to get into the press room tonight.

    Clean it all out.

  122. your mom says:

I don’t know what depresses me more. The state of the national economy or the thought of having AJ on our payroll until 2013.

  123. StanfordBen says:

You guys have it all wrong. Do not take AJ out of the game. Keep him in until his arm falls off. It’s win-win: saves the bullpen and the front office won’t be reluctant to cut a pitcher with only one arm.

  124. Captain Beatty says:

These clowns in management are clueless when it comes to pitching. Cashman actually defended this guy. How is he going to spin 6 runs in 2 innings against the Orioles? And Girardi is just a puppet, afraid to do anything that’s not in his book.

  125. Grit for Brains says:

What is this guy’s deal?…like really, whats his deal?

  126. bonestock94 says:

    At least it’s tommy hunter

  127. Mickey Scheister says:

AJ Burnett makes Tommy Hunter look like Cy Young.

  128. IRF says:

AJ Burnett appears to be struggling right now. Maybe he isn’t as good as his contract might suggest?

  129. Will says:

I don’t care how much this bum is making. Release him now!

  130. Cuso says:

What can they really do here?

AJ has to eat some inning here, like it or not.

  131. Bronx Byte says:

51 stinking horseshit pitches in 2 inning of work. How much will it take ?

  132. Melky says:

That little Mexican pitcher from Team Mexico in the LLWS available?

  133. AJSux says:

Girardi should leave AJ out there until he gives up 20 runs. Hopefully he’ll blow out his arm in the process.

  134. Ivan says:

You know whats amazing…it was almost inevitable with Burnett performance…this is comical.

  135. your mom says:

    Well, I’m just glad to know that we have an offense capable of hitting 3 grand slams in a game. . . . . . . . . . .

  136. Mickey Scheister says:

Only two grandslams needed, not three.

  137. Greg says:

I like what Girardi’s doing. Dont burn the bullpen. Punish the man

  138. #24!!!! says:

Is this real life? If so: screw you, AJ.

  139. Steve O says:

A.J. Burnett is quickly becoming one of the all-time worse Yankees.

  140. Melky says:

    RAIN DELAY please GOD.

  141. Ethan says:

I imagine almost every single yankee fan would agree to pay an addition 4 dollars per year per ticket to get rid of this bum. Those 4 dollars will pay off his contract, so do that please!

  142. Will says:

Please God. Let it rain harder!

  143. Cy Pettitte says:

    Cy Hunter

  144. Melky says:

AJ Burnett and Jorge Posada for Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano…who hangs up first?

    • Ivan says:

The Yankees and not even close. You be doing the Cubs a favor with that trade. I mean at least when Burnett sucks, he doesnt become a total asshole like Zambrano.

      • MannyGeee says:

and you are eating 2 seasons of Soriano and another year of Zambrano for 2 seasons of AJ. not to mention like $60M difference in salary. Nah, the evil you know….

      • Sweet Dick Willie says:

Not to mention that Jorge’s contract is up this year and Soriano is due $18 mil/yr through 2014.

  145. Rockstar4Life says:

Still bullshit how the Yankees are being screwed by Selig and the Orioles. First Tampa and now Baltimore. Fuck the both of them and Selig too for letting these teams get away with it. Lets screw them out of their off day right before they play the Red Sox.

  146. nsalem says:

AJ has been lights out in the 3rd inning this year.

  147. Dale Mohorcic says:

Why is BP Burnett still in this game?

  148. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I wish Jack Curry was here. I was looking forward to another Angry Girardi interview.

  149. Kostas says:

Well I guess I need to smoke more of the proverbial pipe. Perhaps, per Cashman, I should lick the resin from inside…

AJ – you are to pitching what Wile E Coyote is to catching Roadrunner.

  150. Rainbow Connection says:

Is AJ now officially much worse than Lackey? Or are they still neck and jowel?

    • Will says:

Lackey at least has more than 2 pitches and can strike people out. AJ is so predictable. You can literally see players sitting on his fastball. He just doesn’t give us a chance to win. So fucking terrible.

  151. Melky says:

    Ahahahhaa 1-2-3!

  152. Greg says:

The pressure’s off him so he goes 1-2-3.

  153. Tom Merritt says:

Why don’t they release this waste product tonite!!! I don’t get this? I’d pay him twice what he is owed just to never have to see his sorry ass again. He will not improve. His mechanics are a disaster and he has no command of any pitch. Why does Girardi keep rolling him out there?

  154. Props to Curtis, this situation is ridiculous.

  155. nsalem says:

Another dominating 3rd inning performance by AJ.

  156. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Michael Young and Todd Helton?

  157. nsalem says:

    The comeback starts.

  158. Captain Beatty says:

Where are Darrell Rasner and Sidney Ponson when we need them? Anybody’s better than AJ’s 5+ ERA over the past two seasons. And I mean anybody.

  159. Sarah says:

Maybe AJ should try pitching with his left arm.

  160. bonestock94 says:

Ugh, and now windspeed estimates for Irene in my area went from 100 mph yesterday to 50 now. LAME

  161. Nuke LaDoosh says:

Maybe Yanks have a few Grand Slams in them tonight.

  162. teddy says:

good approach by teix, didn’t work out

  163. Melky says:

Chipper Jones and Todd Helton maybe?

    • tom says:

Do franchise records only apply to time in one city? If so, Chipper’s a good call. But otherwise I’d assume Aaron would hold the Braves record.

  164. Greg says:

Nothing’s going their way. right now.

  165. Ethan says:

Really like the YES broadcasters actually standing up for Arod

  166. Ethan says:

    “It’s 6 nothing bombers”

  167. MannyGeee says:

I dont know what drives me crazier…

that AJ has turned into an absolute pumpkin for the 3rd August in a row or that this offense turnes enemic when AJ shits the bed…

  168. thaaaaaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

so another night of our starter getting blown up…and the yanks not being able to hit a 4.5 era scrub. when do the slams begin?

  169. teddy says:

anyone think granderson eas hit on purpose

  170. Will says:

Can the Yankees just Ollie Perez this asshole and banish him to Tampa? I have a feeling Noesi, Phelps, or Warren would give us a better chance to win than this pathetic excuse for a pitcher.

  171. Stratman9652 says:

Kim Jones lost all of her clothes. *Chuckles*

  172. Steve O says:

Time for the rest of the Yanks to take the soap and towel to Burnett tonight.

  173. Dale Mohorcic says:

  174. Looks like Angle is “that guy” who’s a pest for the series.

  175. JPHX says:

I’d rather watch the 1-866-NY-QUITS commercial on repeat for 3 hours than watch AJ Burnett pitch

  176. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    4-1 A’s

    /some good news

  177. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Michael Kay and Friends are obsessed with Robert Andino.

  178. BK2ATL says:

    You know what?

Maybe Girardi should just leave him out there until the 9th, esp. after his last meltdown where he cursed out Girardi for pulling him. This time, don’t pull him at all. Make him pitch with his feet in the 9th, if his arm falls off.

  179. MannyGeee says:

AJ going to single handedly kill Russell Martin.

  180. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Stop, stop, he’s already dead!

  181. Dino Velvet says:

The team really must be seething over AJ.

  182. Captain Beatty says:

Jeter wants AJ gone as much as we do.

  183. Bob Stone says:

I’ve been on the fence regarding AJ in the past, given what a terrific Yankee killer he was when in Toronto, his demonstrated great stuff and his 09 World Series victory. I’ve supported Girardi in trying to ride out his slumps.

But . . . this is just too much. He is hurting the team. He is hurting morale. He has to go.

Trade him for a bucket of balls or whatever you can get. If you can’t get anything, cut him.

I’ve had it with AJ. HE HAS TO GO!!!

  184. thaaaaaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

to say AJ sucks would be an insult to suck

  185. JobaWockeeZ says:

I’m smoking the objective pipe. He still sucks.

  186. Karl Krawfid says:

Hey at least the A’s are smacking up Wakefield.

  187. Stratman9652 says:

Wow the last thing AJ needs onto of his usual suckfest is bad luck.

  188. tom says:

Well, that was on Jeter, but, you know, there’s the old baseball-ism, that when pitchers screw around with long pitch counts, it leaves fielders back on their heels in moments like that.

Not that Jeter would make that excuse.

  189. BK2ATL says:

It’s fucking 7-0 again with “guess who” on the mound….

Say what you want about Zambrano, but at least he gives a fuck and has some pride. Crazy as a square wheel, but at least he competes on the mound.

This mofo we got, competes with himself, trying to top his last meltdown.

    • Ethan says:

I honestly think AJ cares. I think his problems stem from psychological metaldowns. He just doesn’t believe he can do it any more. He’s historically been so bad in August that it can’t just be bad pitching. He is so streaky that it really seems like his problems are psychological.

      • BK2ATL says:

Dude, save the excuses for this dude.

How many more do we have to endure? It certainly is not fair to consistently have your defense on their heels, since they have no idea what he’s going to throw or where, nor should the offense always have to fight uphill on his starts.

Enough with the excuses. He’s gotta go.

        • Ethan says:

I’m not giving an excuses for him. I don’t have any faith in him anymore to be a quality pitcher. But I think his problem is psychological, which really is worse than a mechanical problem. A mechanical problem he could fix, a psychological problem you can’t.

      • Jimmy McNulty says:

He just doesn’t believe he can do it any more.

Gee, I wonder where he got that idea.

      • Actually, a “metaldown” sounds pretty epic.

    • MannyGeee says:

Say what you want about Zambrano, but at least he gives a fuck and has some pride. Crazy as a square wheel, but at least he competes on the mound.

um. have you watched any Zambrano lowlights? He doesnt care about pitching well or about anything but hisself. say what you want about AJ, but Zambrano is no better in ANY WAY

  190. Monteroisdinero says:

So how many pitches does AJ get in this game? I gotta believe 120.

  191. Greg says:

THis game is over. THey are not going top score 22 runs of Tommy Hunter. It was forseeable that:

    A: AJ would struggle
B: The Yankees aren’t going to score many runs tonight due to the law of averages.

  192. your mom says:

With this pattern, AJ will have a 1,2,3 inning in the 5th. Unfortunately so will our offense.

  193. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Comeback time!

  194. Bob Stone says:

    Hip, Hip Jorge!!!

  195. Bronx Byte says:

Let Burnett throw 150 pitches then let him complain tomorrow of a sore shoulder. DL him for the rest of the year.

  196. Dela G says:

    Jorgie Jucied one!

  197. Greg says:

    There’s one

  198. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Bobby Dylan is my favorite artist. Thanks for the treat, Joe.

  199. thaaaaaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    here we go….

  200. BK2ATL says:

Jorge’s been hot since the benching. Guess it lit a fire under him.

  201. JobaWockeeZ says:

So does this convince Cash that AJ shouldn’t be 30 feet close to the playoff roster? I still doubt it.

  202. Karl Krawfid says:

Gardner should go up and just swing at that first pitch down the middle he loves to take almost every at bat.

  203. Greg says:

There it is again with Gardner. The extremes. He’s either extermely hot or ice cold. I would prefer the middle ground.

  204. Will says:

How is Tampa still in the penant race? Sheesh. Just like last year. They won’t go away.

    • tom says:

You consider 9 games back in the loss column for division or wild card, with barely 30 games to play, just like last year, when they won the division”?

  205. Charles says:

AJ move your ass you lazy fuck theres no way Vlad should ever get an infield hit

  206. Captain Beatty says:

Say what you want about the guy but he gutted out 5 innings on a tough, rainy night. AJ kept us within striking distance as just the night before our offense came back from a 6 run deficit. The bats just didn’t get it done tonight. AJ’s still our guy.

That will be the spin by Cashman and Girardi after the game on AJ’s start. These clowns don’t know anything about pitching.

    • Greg says:

Not to mention the three errors by the defense.

    • Jimmy McNulty says:

Wow, sooooo many stupid things I don’t know where to start. He “gutted out five innings” it’s more that he completely shit his pants and the manager just decided to let him keep sucking. “Kept us in striking distance” Really? Six runs is striking distance? I’d have to say that most teams would feel pretty damn good about a six run lead. Granted the Yankees have one of the best offenses in the business, but still…I’d hardly call six runs striking distance. You don’t expect the team to score six runs a night by any means. “AJ’s our guy” Yeah maybe if they have a game to give in the playoffs they’ll run him out there.

“These clowns don’t know anything about pitching.” Umm…yeah, I’m pretty sure they do. They actually run a major league baseball franchise. Besides, it doesn’t take Greg Maddux to realize that AJ Burnett is fucking horrible.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Seriously they need to hire a separate scouting department for pitching because ever since Cashman got power the pitching record has been pretty bad. Yeah CC is good but no scout would say not to sign him…

  207. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Momentum shifter!!

  208. Karl Krawfid says:

  209. 24isKing says:

Correct me if im wrong but we have AJ “head case” Burnett for 2 more seasons. Hypothetically speaking if AJ comes back in the next 2 years and pitches lights out do you guys still consider him a bad signing?

Note: I believe we have a better chance of Jesus Christ pitch for the Yankees before AJ is good again.

  210. Marc says:

Sooo AJ has given up 7 runs, and has a runner at 3rd, but hasn’t been lifted? Methinks Girardi is caving to AJ. I wonder if AJ was actually pissed about last week’s pulling early, and so Girardi is letting him hang himself this game?

  211. your mom says:

Burnett is finishing this inning and that’ll be it.

  212. Matt Montero says:

Anyone else excited for AJ’s interview after the game? It’s personally my favorite part of his starts…

I’m expecting him to say something like, “I got better after my one bad inning.”

  213. MannyGeee says:

    well… that sucked

  214. Bob Stone says:

    9-1 – Leave AJ in.

    • BK2ATL says:

Now, I completely agree. Leave his ass out there for 120 pitches. At this point, whatever happens, happens.

Of all the Yankees, he had the nerve to cuss out Girardi for pulling him out of the last game???? Fuck that. Do not bail him out. This game is lost. Don’t burn the bullpen. Make him earn that $16.5 million with a hot dose of humility and a cold dose of shame.

  215. your mom says:

  216. thaaaaaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

  217. BigTimeBartolo says:

Can’t stand watching this motherfucking scrub come out every 5 days and continue to fucking suck.

  218. IRF says:

Remember when AJ was pissed because he thought he was taken out too early? This must be much shittier for him.

  219. Tyrone Sharpton says:

Ok lynch Burnett. Fucking piece of cockshit…to think that I would support him

  220. Marc says:

Wtf is going on here. 112 pitches, 9 earned runs, why is he still playing?! This must be Girardi’s way of getting him back from last week.

  221. Widget says:

Nice to see Oakland doing their best to blow an 8-1 lead.

  222. Phil says:

    Anyone have Mike Mussina’s number??

  223. teddy says:

the doubleheader tommorrow has been cancel

  224. Captain Beatty says:

After this game AJ’s only role on this team will be the pie guy in walkoff victories. His current role is a clown, just here to amuse us, and he has done that. But I think Girardi will finally take him out of the rotation, this has just been too much.

  225. Sean says:

I’d give Igawa another chance to start before I sent AJ out there again.

  226. Randy says:

Ok Andy, family time is over. Time for one more playoff run.

  227. Bronx Byte says:

Burnett’s spin after the game : “I’m going to get this thing right.”

    What right ?

    • EricVA says:

And Girardi will say that, without the three errors, the game wouldn’t have been so bad.

    • Matt Montero says:

Hey take away the first, second, fourth, and fifth inning and he had a great game. Worked efficiently, kept his pitch count down.

  228. your mom says:

Well, at least we won’t be shut out. Fuck Tommy Hunter. And Fuck AJ!

  229. Frigidevil says:

Jesus AJ. 2 wins and 2 quality starts in the last 2 months, during which time he’s added a whole run to his ERA. For a guy as prideful as we know he is, how has he not just pulled himself? He is costing this team games and he knows it.

  230. Nogomo says:

As has been noted, tomorrow’s DH is cancelled and they’re talking about a game or games on Sunday.

Oh, and AJ sux. his has also been noted.

  231. Dino Velvet says:

They just canceled tomorrow’s double header.

    • Widget says:

That blows, so are they going to play a doubleheader Sunday or Monday? Funny too because Boston and Oakland are playing 2 tomorrow because they canceled sunday. Great the Red Sox get two days off before they play the Yankees.

      • Greg says:

Does it really matter? We’re not as good as they are. We’re not winning the division.

        • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

          crystal ball’d

        • Widget says:

Tied in the loss column. But records don’t count?

          • Tom says:

About “Tied in the loss column. But records don’t count?” If that refers to the poster who said the Yanks weren’t as good as the Sawx, well, yes, I think that as far as this year goes, it doesn’t matter that they’re tied (at the moment) in losses. For whatever reason, the Sox play the Yankees tougher than the Yanks play them. The Sox seem to then coast a bit against other teams, enough to make for this W-L near-tie. Impossible to play everyone as tough as they play NY. And, as I said last night, there’s a statistical illusion generated by the Yanks’ staff: it ain’t as good as it appears to have been. It’s an over-achieving staff, easily exposed against a good hitting team like the Sox. Given that the Sox do have a legitimate 1-2 in their rotation (and when Bucholz is healthy a legit 3), they can often keep the Yankee offense under enough control to go 10-2. Play every game like it’s a playoff and use their punch and their pitching power, and the current tie in losses means zilch.

  232. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

So the September 8 game is at a TBA time? I would not be one bit surprised if the O’s made that a night game for the sole purpose of making the yankees go to Anaheim at a ridiculous hour.

  233. Widget says:

What will get lost in this poopfest from AJ is the offense getting dominated by Tommy Hunter. That’s pretty disappointing.

  234. teddy says:

yanks shouldn’t shown up september 8, unless they need the game

  235. Nogomo says:

One would be forgiven for thinking the offense prefers Phil to AJ. At least so far. Still some frames left.

  236. Mojo says:

Teixera is so miserably bad. I’ll say it a million more times until it’s no longer true. Yeah, he just lined out to first, but hot fu*king damn he is the most infuriating player to watch. Even more so than AJ because nobody expects anything out of him.

  237. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

AJ wasn’t that bad! He would have had a quality start if he went 1 more inning and allowed 6 less runs!

  238. Mojo says:

Damnit, I just know that the Sox are going to fight back tonight. No opposing lead is safe in Fenway.

  239. Joebrah says:

I want AJ to throw a complete game tonight.

    250 pitches, 25 earned runs.

The fact that he is almost certainly starting against Boston next week is laughable. I can’t remember a pitcher that over a two month span had a more definitive “automatic L” stigma than AJ.

    • Matt Montero says:

Wouldn’t the MLBPA have a problem with that? They seem to bitch about everything. I guess the Yankees could counter, the MLBPA is for Major Leaguers, which he clearly isn’t pitching like.

  240. Stratman9652 says:

I’d love to give Vlad a roll of quarters, send him to the batting cages, and just sit back and watch.

  241. Ethan says:

This is the ugliest game all month, quite possibly all year.

    • Ethan says:

Corretion, definitely the ugliest game of the year.

      • Mojo says:

Pitching issues aside and an utterly anemic offense against a less-than-mediocre pitcher, I’m sure we can all agree that this blowout is far better than a one-run loss in extra innings. At least we can laugh at their pathetic play and not mourn more RISP Fail and such. It sucks, yes, but it’s not heartbreaking in the slightest.

  242. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    I’m at a loss.

  243. Mojo says:

    Hehe. Ew.

  244. Charles says:

And off goes the TV, see you guys Sunday

  245. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

And Ayala’s ERA remains the same. haha.

  246. Widget says:

Has a team ever given up 20 runs after scoring 20 runs the day before?

  247. Greg says:

Ayala’s ERA stays down. All unearned

  248. Bob Stone says:

12-1. Ugh. AJ could have done that!

  249. nsalem says:

Was the fan legally obligated to return the glove?

  250. Bartolo's Colon says:

What are the chances the yanks actually give aj another start this year? Sept call ups are almost here and any aaa sp would be better than aj. Please don’t torture us with another start of one of the worst pitchers in the MLB

  251. Bob Stone says:

    I don’t think so.

  252. Bartolo's Colon says:

    Cmon garbage time hr!

  253. wow says:

the AJ thing just doesn’t even fase me anymore… but offense, really? It’s not Cliff Lee. Really hope this team can get going consistently.

  254. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

ARod is such a stat padder

  255. MannyGeee says:

hot damn. A-Rod is so un clutch.

  256. TampaYankee says:

I’m not able to see the game, what happened when AJ went off for the last time? Aside from boos I’m sure, but did he throw things and punch things? Or was he calm?

Just gotta have a visual haha.

    • Bob Stone says:

He mouthed something with a look of disgust as he headed for the clubhouse steps. I could not make out what he said. Otherwise, nothing notable. The Yanks are in Baltimore so he wasn’t booed.

  257. nsalem says:

    16 to go for 30

  258. Mojo says:

ARod garbage time. We all knew that was coming.

  259. Frigidevil says:

    Pfft…stat padder

  260. Karl Krawfid says:

    Chippin away

  261. Ethan says:

Yay Alex broke is homerless streak. One of the few highlights of the night. The others being Posada’s homer and the fact that we know AJ won’t be starting another game (really really hopefully). Is there anywhere to stream the postgame show online?

  262. Will says:

    Yay! Meaningless A-Rod homerun!

  263. Captain Beatty says:

    Freddy and Nova- Sunday
    Colon- Monday

    CC- Tuesday at Boston
    Hughes- Wednesday
    AJ- Thursday

They won’t pitch Freddy and Nova on 3 days rest Thursday. AJ’s all we got, folks. They won’t go with Noesi or an AAA pitcher.

  264. MannyGeee says:

    are we tied yet?

  265. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Stat padding yankees.

  266. Cy Pettitte says:

at least they’re going down fighting

  267. Karl Krawfid says:

    8 more runs boys

  268. Ethan says:

Ok now at least the game isn’t quite so embarrassing for the offense.

  269. Frigidevil says:

    God DAMN Swish!

  270. Widget says:

Should have pulled AJ sooner Girardi.

  271. Mojo says:

So when can we bench Gardner for a game or two? Has he even hit it out of the infield lately? Also, hasn’t Andruw been sodomizing the ball since the ASB?

  272. Captain Beatty says:

I think our only hope for AJ not pitching Thursday at Boston is that Sunday’s DH gets washed away as well. Then if we play a DH Monday we can pitch Nova and Freddy, push Colon back to Tuesday, CC on Wed, and Hughes on Thurs.

  273. Ethan says:

Why couldn’t AJ have a Zambrano-esque meltdown and announce that he was retiring.

  274. Cy Pettitte says:

    let’s fuck up this lolpen

  275. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

wow Jeter almost hit one out to dead center.

  276. AJSux says:

If they run AJ out there for a few more starts, he could end up with 0 WAR this year. Now that would be funny and appropriate

  277. Ethan says:

    Teix popup?

  278. Bob Stone says:

Only 7 more to go to tie.

  279. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Michael kay is crazy.

  280. wow says:

this is a bit off topic, but I’m wondering if there is public transit from the St. Pete Airport to the Trop?

I’m going to the last series against the Rays at some point that week.

    Anyone now?

    • Sarah says:

Maybe a city bus, but I’m doubtful. The transit in FL isn’t very good.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

besides cabs, no. probably cost you like $25 each way. are you staying at a hotel? the Marriott I stayed at (clearwater) had a shuttle for the games, $20 round trip.

    • Bob Stone says:

I don’t know about the mass transit situation from the airport to the Rotten Orange – I’m sure you could take a cab.

The real question is: “why would you ever want to watch a game in that dump? It is the sorriest excuse for a ball park in all of major league baseball.

      • wow says:

it’s the closest to me (I’m in Greenville, SC) and I’ll be in school then so I don’t want to take time off to travel to NY, although I could.

I tried to go earlier this year, but I had to cancel because of a business trip.

  281. Karl Krawfid says:

The real fun is about to start.

    Post game with AJ!

  282. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    and the postgame fireworks begin…

  283. Nuke LaDoosh says:

OK, I’ll call this a win for Mike Flannagon and let’s move on.

  284. Cuso says:

    Stat padding:

Swisher has four homers in his last four games.

The only game we won in the last 4 was the one he DIDN’T homer in.

    Stat padder: buy into it.

Now go ahead and cuss me out & call me ignorant. Hate me. I’m the heel.

  285. Greg says:

Girardi saying that he “doesnt think he can skip AJ due to the schedule”

    • mbonzo says:

Meh, AJ will have a great start where he looks better than CC and everybody will think he’s play off bound, its too predictable.

  286. Greg says:

After hearing that, I think he is seriously considering forfeiting the game on September 8th. He was pissed at the schedulemakers.

    • Bob Stone says:

He was pissed at Baltimore management for refusing to play a double header today and scheduling the make-up game for September 8th. He was pissed at Balimore management, not the schedule makers.

  287. Monteroisdinero says:

AJ and Laffey (Scranton) sucking it up tonight. Both these guys need to find another organization.

  288. Bob Stone says:

I’m glad Girardi expressed his displeasure, in the post game show, with Baltimore management’s refusal to play a split double header today and to schedule one for tomorrow, which is now canceled.

He also indicated that the Yankees would not accept playing a make up game on September 8th, their only day off, and a day before they travel to Anaheim.

I haven’t seen him that irritated about anything in awhile.

  289. Jimmy McNulty says:

So…AJ may be worse than Javy was last year, that dude’s just been fucking godawful. At this point he may not be the seventh best starter in the organization.

  290. Nuke LaDoosh says:

listening to the post game interviews, at least A.J. isn’t a Doosh.

  291. Dan Sigal says:

When A.J was signed to an 82.5 million dollar contract fans all across the city were excited to bring him over from Toronto. It was encouraging that he posted an 18 and 10 record in his last year with the blue jays while pitching a career high 221.1 innings. What was even more astonishing was that he managed to keep his name off the disabled list for the first time in his career. before spring training came around the Yankees were constantly reminded of how they were fooled by Carl Pavano when he won 18 games for the marlins and people will never forgot how that all unraveled. He pitched a total of 145.2 innings in a span of four years while also pocketing 40 million. The Yankees remained optimistic and welcomed Burnett into the organization. Burnett sadly enough was never able to live up to his standards, but he showed flashes of what he potentially could have been. In June and July of the year 2009 people all around New York started to see why the Yankees signed him to such a mammoth contract to be their number two starter. He pitched to 2.30 ERA while posting an outstanding 7 and 2 record. As amazing as he was in those two months he couldn’t have been worse when august came around. Going 0 and 4 pitching to a 6.03 era. Since that august, A.J was never able to regroup and it ruined his confidence. Once again he showed those same flashes that he had shown a couple of months earlier and prevailed in game 2 of the World Series shutting out the Phillies in 6 innings. It was great that he won an important game for us especially since he needed to rebound after C.C had lost game 1, but some including himself might have forgotten that he was blown up for 7 runs in 3 innings in game 5.

When 2010 came around it was a new year and a fresh start for Burnett. We all thought it was coming especially when he teased us with a 2.43 era and 3-0 record in April. It was all downhill from there. It even reached such a low point that he posted an 11.35 ERA in the month of June. With Dave elliand mysterious absence that was Burnett excuses for pitching such poor performances. When elliand returned it was the same Burnett we had seen for the past 2 years. It reached another low point when the Yankees had enough and had no other choice but to remove him from the rotation in the post season. Burnett was furious with the organizations decision to remove him but when you take a look at the stats you couldn’t disagree with them. His final 22 starts of the regular season, he was 4-13 with a 6.48 ERA. No matter what the numbers were when the Yankees needed to rely on a 4th starter in the ALCS they gave that game to A.J. They were already down two to one in the series and fans were packing their bags just giving the series away to the rangers. It had seemed he had given us fans hope and life when in the 6th inning the Yankees were up 3 to 2 but once an enigma always an enigma. He allowed a 3 run homer to Bengie Molina and once they were eliminated that’s all people thought about in the offseason. It was still fresh in our minds and what made things worse was Dave elliand was relieved of his duties as a pitching coach.
When Larry Rothschild was hired on November 20, 2010 his first job was to straighten out Burnett. The Yankees tried everything they could that they even sent Rothschild to his home. Over the offseason A.J. tried to keep his mind off things and stay focused on the upcoming season. As the 2011 season prolonged Burnett was pitching to 4 ERA. It was nothing new for the Yankees but they had no other choice to send him out there. When the calendar flipped to august all people were thinking about was his stats in August as a Yankee. (0-8 record and a 7 ERA.) It was fate for him to pitch to his numbers and as they say history repeats itself he sure proved it. Except this time he was pitching to an 11.91 ERA. So, through the first 3 years as a Yankee and hopefully his last journalists and reporters were all saying how Burnett was never consistent. Well if you ask me, he was consistently pitching disastrous through his time in New York.

  292. JohnnyC says:

    My eyes! My eyes!

  293. John Cerra says:

This seems absurd, but the one of other horrible year players this year has turned his season around, and might be a better choice to start in AJ’s place next week. Andrew Brackman has had a great month since he reverted to a prior pitching motion, has big league stuff, is on the 40 man roster, and…..could not do worse than AJ….

  294. The Big 3 says:

I read past all the Jeter shit,
    and Swish shit,
    Jones shit,
    Nova shit.

I even read past the few comments about replacing Mo.

Three quality starts and most of you would be asking if he should start before CC (cause he looks washed up lately): Fact.

I think he’ll be fine (if healthy) but the season’s growing short, he doesn’t have much time left to right himself. If he wants to salvage this season and be an important playoff asset, he needs to get on the ball pronto.

And don’t kid yourselves, if AJ is still sucking and is replaced by Nova/Hughes/Colon/Garcia in the playoffs, the chance of this team advancing is greatly diminished.

    • The Big 3 says:

Against the best offense of his era – NYY:
      11 GS
      6-3 W/L
      1.03 WHIP
      .206 BAA

If you actually believe this guy doesn’t have the talent to dominate, you’re batshit insane.

Get over it, AJ. You’re needed.

  295. stuart a says:

that aj is done. he is gone..

talk about a guy in denial

aj has been horrible for over 40 starts.. not 5 but 40 starts. he has 8 quality starts in 27 starts this year.

jorge use to be great also, key words are use to be…

  296. stuart a says:

the guy cannot repeat his mechanics. he is 34, throws 2 pitches and has been a big leaguer for 12 years.
