Game 132: Escape from Baltimore
ByJust one more game left in this stupid series in Baltimore, with games rained out due to hurricanes but not made up as part of a doubleheader in advance because the Orioles didn’t want to give up the gate revenue Yankees don’t care about Mike Flanagan. Derek Jeter (knee) and Alex Rodriguez (thumb) are still banged up and are unsurprisingly out of the lineup. Here’s the starting nine…
Brett Gardner, LF
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Eric Chavez, 3B
Russell Martin, C
Eduardo Nunez, SS
Freddy Garcia, SP
The game is scheduled to begin a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.
Injury Updates: Jeter is available in an emergency tonight … A-Rod went back to New York for an MRI (the results were good) and he’ll meet the team in Boston, though he might not play in the series … both Pedro Feliciano and Damaso Marte suffered setbacks in their rehab from shoulder troubles and are done for the year. Just like they were in April.

Fuck Buck
Buck Fuck
http://images.wikia.com/killbi.....0/Buck.jpg
Cano really could of used a half day on Tuesday or Wednesday but with A-Rod AND Jeter out he’s going to have to play through it. It sucks, he and Granderson could use a rest from the field down the stretch.
I agree. When was the last time these guys didn’t play? Yet alone being DH’d for a day.
I guess the off day on Saturday may help them keep fresh but they did just play two games yesterday…Is Douchilis still on the DL? Or will he be conveniently activated just in time for the series in Fenway?
I heard Peter Gammons say that he’d probably be activated by their series against Texas.
Thanks, Gene Monahan.
Kinda random, but I just noticed Cano has stolen a career high 8 bases this year and only been caught once.
For a guy who entered the year with 20 career SB and 23 career CS, that’s pretty weird.
Montero goes deep again in Scranton. #18 on the season.
I thought the game started at 7 eastern time? Fuck.
They’re playing a double header today. Manny B pitching too. Throwing a NO HITTER through 5 so far (5K’s and one walk)
Manny B is doing the damn thing also.
5 no hit innings so far. Game is only 7 innings long with the double header.
Iglesias breaks up the no hitter. ugh.
Question:
Why is it ok when players go after every last cent because “you would make the same choice in that situation” not apply to buinessmen and executives as well?
All this bitching over the make-up day is just as ridiculous as the bitching when players don’t sign hometown discounts. Yeah it sucks, but why do you expect someone to voluntarily give up money?
I don’t have a problem with them wanting to maximize revenue, only with how they handled it. if they’re gonna do that they should come out and say it. instead they decided to have this holier than thou attitude and drag Flanny into it.
“why do you expect someone to voluntarily give up money?”
Because that’s what the rich kids asked for. You’re just supposed to do what THEY want, not what YOU want. If you don’t do what they want, they’ll run and tell the teacher.
Imagine the outrage if Ron Guidry tossed himself off a roof and the O’s asked for a DH that the Yanks didn’t want to play (because it’s simply not in their best interest and don’t give a fuck about the O’s best interest)? Everyone here would be saying the O’s are classless pieces of shit.
What are you?
Just being honest. Initially, I fully supported and cheered Granderson’s well-written statement. After reading all the constant dumb homer comments here I thought about it more and more.
This is how I now feel. Jeez. You’re the rich kids. Just let it go. You will have many victories. This is making you look like brats.
So the Yankees should just let it slide because they’re better than the other teams?
I would have simply accepted “A troll”, but thanks for trying anyway.
Because it’s the shitty thing to do. As a MLB Franchise one should have a fair degree of respect for the other MLB Franchises and recognize what they’re going through. God knows the outrage it would be if it were a more media friendly franchise going through this. Sometimes shit happens, MLB is a franchise and a national brand. The Orioles blow, their season isn’t going anywhere. The Yankees have a realistic shot at having homefield throughout the playoffs…yes, I know the shitty teams like to play spoiler, but this isn’t playing spoiler, it’s playing the asshole. Yeah, they’re going to lose a bit out at the gat, but the Yankees give you millions of dollars in revenue sharing every year. Now you’re saying “wait a minute, were going to be difficult pricks and refuse to do the reasonable thing at all costs, and instead of having a DH on Friday and Monday, we’re going to take away your only off day.” Not only revenue sharing, but the Yankees give a huge trickle down effect to the Os. I’m not saying that the Orioles should bendover backwards to appease the Yankees, but what I am saying is that some respect for their peers is due. It’s in the best interests of all of baseball for the Yankees to remain healthy down the stretch so they can be ready to go for the playoffs, the same holds true for the rest of the teams in the AL and NL that are contenders. Sometimes you have to eat a little bit of shit for the sake of the brand and the group as a whole, the proper comparison isn’t what the players do in taking a hometown discount the proper comparison is a player not doing what’s best for the sake of the Players Union.
Damn. That Rainbow person’s comment disappeared.
Zero tolerance for impostors.
Imposter how?
What did he say?
Yep, Manny’s got a no hitter right now, 5 K’s, 1 BB against the Paw Sawx.
/jinx’d
Al Leiter sighting! on MLBN, but still…lol
I wish YES would just give me the Cone and Leiter Weekly (even better, Daily) Variety Hour show I’ve wanting forever.
With El Duque playing the role of Max Weinberg
Jack Curry can be the FedEx Pope. Bob Lorenz can be Preparation H Raymond.
I think it’s terrible for the Yanks to give any further starts to Burnett. Hard to imagine Warren or a stretched out Noesi aren’t better options at this point.
Gardy can’t buy a hit. this sucks.
Jose Iglesias singles off of Banuelos in the 6th to break up the no hitter.
Can he be DFA’d mid-game?
Yankees are facing a real killer today.
Yes. Wasn’t Simon being held in the Dominican in the murder of someone? What happened with that?
Anybody know where I can find the Giants-Jets preseason game? Teh internets say NFL Network but that’s a fail.
NBC 4 New York is carrying it for me (Cablevision).
Comcast equivalent, anyone?
Thanks btw.
Wouldn’t you just assume it was pronounced “see-MOAN” and not “SIGH-mun”, without having to have him tell you?
I mean, he’s not from an Anglophone country, he’s from a Hispanophone country. The pronounciation rules of the Spanish language are pretty straightforward, and it’s not like baseball players from the hispanophone world is a new thing or something.
Come on man, these are writers. What do they know about language?
What if it was “SIGH-MOAN”????
Well played, Mauer.
Isn’t that what Mrs Young did?
I vaguely remember Kim Jones said he preferred the SIGH-mun.
TEXXXXXX
It would be nice if his slump is over now.
Always good to score early…now we just need the often.
looks like bp so far. Hopefully Freddy is sharp.
Despite the outcome in that at-bat, we clearly have the better Nick in Right Field.
Markakis’s power has evaporated, and he’s still in his prime. It’s sad.
That guy needs a Granderson/Bautista type swing overhaul, stat.
Projected to be the real deal. Seen him play 3-4 years ago and felt his range with the glove/arm was real good and thought he could be the .280 with some power (maybe 20 or so).
Clearly shouldn’t be batting in the 2/3 hole…maybe he gets well or a Cash ninja type trade works our way as he seems to be a decent player.
Keep fucking that chicken.
At SWB tonight, Monteroisdinero and Mannyisuncanny.
Ok folks-we need the spanish word for grit.

Well played Senor Mauer.

The first one was what Google Translate told me, the second is what I know it as.
what is Vlad arguing, that’s clearly a strike.
Anybody read Frankie P’s report on Mason Williams today? If so, a sentence or two recap would be appreciated.
I wonder if Kim Jones thinks Grandy is a home run hitter.
Manny B with the greet as he polvo-rizes the Pawtucket Sux tonight.
/gotta share good news.
Nicely done.
I don’t know who’s announcing the Jets-Giants game, but “audiblizing” is not a word.
I don’t know how Alfredo Simon only averages 6 K/9.
Fun fact: Granderson has more extra base hits than singles (68 XBH to 67 1B).
Bondsian.
Bonds would have 38 HR’s and 59 rbi’s.
Have you seen the Giants play? So would Grandy.
Al Leiter is coming back tomorrow! Big Game Al!
LMFAO
“Big game Al” Kay is so crazy…
I missed ole Sweaty Freddy, the chief. Not to be confused with Raekwon, the chef.
I bet on Thursday AJ’s ERA will leap over Lackey’s
That would actually take a lot to do. I don’t know exactly but that’s probably like 8 or 9 runs in one inning. But that’s not unrealistic. He’s the worst pitcher in the game the last two years.
He’s the worst pitcher in the game the last two years.
http://www2.pictures.gi.zimbio.....-j97yl.jpg
stats to back it up???
Burnett: 5.28/4.81/4.27 E/F/x in 60 starts, 347.2 IP, 2.3 fWAR
Arroyo: 4.37/4.97/4.43 E/F/x in 59 starts, 377.0 IP, 1.2 fWAR
Keep in mind, 1/9th of Arroyo’s BFs are pitchers.
Being slightly less terrible than Bronson Arroyo is nothing to brag about. AJ’s definitely up there in terms of the five or ten worst starters in baseball. Then again, I said the same thing about Nova a few months ago, so here’s to hoping I’m wrong yet again.
It’s 12 runs without recording an out to match Lackey’s 5.98 ERA. So I guess that would mean 36 runs in one inning.
As unenjoyable as watching A.J. Burnett pitch, that’s how much fun it is to watch Freddy Garcia pitch.
/McCarver’d

I assume Kay has no earthly clue that Machado is
A. 19
B. still in High-A
C. only hitting .254/.317/.402 there
Yes, Manny Machado is good. No, that does not mean you shouldn’t sign J.J. Hardy. That’s like saying that the team shouldn’t sign any pitching this winter because they just drafted Dylan Bundy.
maybe Kay doesn’t realize you can sign guys to contracts that are <8 years/120mil
There are plenty of reasons why the Hardy extension is bad for the O’s. Machado is a relatively minor reason why it might prove foolish.
I think the Hardy deal makes perfect sense for them. It’s not long, it’s not overpriced, and even if Machado is ready in 2013, Hardy is very tradeable. The only negative is that he’s injury prone, but the crop of shortstops is awful around the league.

Q: Who was the last Yankees pitcher to win Rookie of the Year Award?
A: Kei Igawa. I remember it like it was yesterday.
That Apollo 18 movie looks pretty cool. Of course by me saying that it’s destined to be a flop.

the way michael kay pronounces “banuelos” pisses me off
I still want someone who follows the team and can ask directly to confirm whether it’s Banuelos or Bañuelos. The internet tubez show both spellings, and I have no way of knowing.
Mashmore? Pilliere?
I gotta believe it’s Bañuelos
I hope it’s Banuelos.
Kay says it with the “ñ,” which sounds a bit off, at least to me. I always pronounced it Ban-whey-los.
The Yankees are going to wait a little longer, but everyone is starting to know how to say BAN-U-A-LOS.
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-.....id=6218472
And start practicing now—it’s pronounced ban-u-AY-los.
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/20.....-banuelos/
So, Kay’s pronouncing it wrong.
It’s not “ban-yoo-AY-los”, it’s “ban-oo-AY-los”.
The letter “u” in his name is pronounced just a straight “oo”, not the exaggerated “you” sound that Kay uses.
Looks to me like both of those links have a ‘you’ listed as the second part of the pronounciation. I think he sounds correct. That’s how I remember hearing it in ST too, I believe.
But there’s no long or short vowels in Spanish. Vowels are always pronounced the same way.
And the letter u is not pronounced “you”. It’s just “oo”.
Right, but they’re spelling it in English, not Spanish. Guess we’ll find out eventually…
this is correct. take the Spanish word for cloth, “pañuelo,” for exsmple.
So if Manny B can go 7 complete (minor league doubleheader) throwing a 1 hitter against the Paw-Sox….
We have our next lefty!
maybe hopefully
Nick Swisher now has a career high in fWAR
Eli Manning was fearing the footsteps.
(I do like the play of Danny Ware, though. Nice little back.)
Wow, this Tom Brady guy must suck if he’s in the same league as Eli Manning.
Swish has hit an offspeed pitch for a homer from either side of the plate in the last 2 games.
/Iwillgivehimsomelovenow
So, unfortunately for the rest of us there’s lots of Giants and Jets fans here. So what are you guys paying more attention too: the final dress rehearsal before the regular season or the Yankees play a piece of shit team like the Orioles?
I’m flipping back and forth.
I’m watching the Giants/Jets on my laptop, typing here on my desktop and watching the Yankees on my big screen.
TOO MUCH RADIATION!!!!
Yankees. Always the Yankees. But if there was nothing on but a bunch of football and an Astros game (as little sense as that makes; no Astros games on TV upstate), I’d watch the Stros.
/fuckinghatefootballsomuchitslikemyjob
That sounds like a “you” problem.
Actually, I used to follow the NYG, back in the 80′s. Even went to meet Joe Morris and got a ball signed once. But lately what bother me the most is the pervasive, nay, perverse , non-stop coverage of all things football and the obsession that seems to overcome everyone around me as I look around and think “Hello? There’s a pennant race on? Anyone? Anyone?” Anyway, my point is, football is immensely more popular now than in decades past, and therefore, coverage of football is understandably everywhere. But I want people to talk about baseball, dammit, and that’s why I’m here!
“Me” problem, indeed. I have enough of those, thank you very much.
Sanchize with the hands of stone.
It wasn’t pretty.

I loved that story.
How bout that play by Nunez? Thuhfewtchuh baby!
Tommie does Bart Scott still play for the Jets? I haven’t noticed too much contemptible behavior or RBs getting slapped like a red headed step child in the LB corps tonight.
Did you just see that little chuck he gave to Nicks following Nicks’s nice catch?
Yeah, The Mad Backer’s still there.
Yeah, I’m watching the Yanks on the computer and football on TV. Not paying a whole lot of attention and I tuned in a little late.
Oh good, the Rays are losing. We were in about to lose our playoff spot.
They’re right on our heels. One 7 game losing streak by us and 7 game winning streak for them and we’re tied.
Giants and Yanks up 3-0.
Antonio Cromartie just pulled the ol’ “Baby on the Corner” trick.
Liking Ryan’s aggressiveness, it’s the dress rehearsal so why not see if you can get these 4th downs?
See all those Grandy strikeouts? That’s why I’m not 100% on board with him being an elite player yet.

The Holiday Inn Express in Wilkes-Barre is outstanding. The pillows are so fluffy, it’s like sleeping on a sheep angel.

This game is uncomfortably close. I’m not gonna lie, I’ll be pretty pissed if we lose this game.
Relax. Freddy’s dealing and we have the best bullpen in baseball. These are the Os we’re talking about.
I gotta be honest, I’m pretty pissed at every loss. The last loss I wasn’t mad about was the one where Nick Swisher pitched.

The 1-1 was NOT a strike, Swisher is right. Per usual.
It was bad, but Colon gets calls like that all the time.

You’re a BAMF.
Wait, are all of the giveaways for people 14 and younger or 21 and over? The Yankees must hate people ages 15-20. Maybe that’s why they won’t call up Montero.
I mean, I’m 24, and I want a poster. That’s just not fair.
Mike, Ben, and Joe have been tirelessly working behind the scenes to convince Levine to have a “Hooker Night”. First 10,000 fans between the ages of 18-25 get a free hooker.

What? Freddy pitching a good game the day after Bart pitched a beauty? Where are the Doom and Gloomers hiding tonight?
the amount of vitriolic posting re the rotation is cuckoo
can’t we all agree that:
freddy/bart/nova have exceeded all expectations
nevertheless, it is nerve-wracking to picture them starting against boston or texas in the playoffs
nevertheless, every other (american league) team has rotation issues
3 pitchers for 3M. AJ for 16. oh the pain, the pain…
Your level-headed rationalism has no place in discussion about baseball.
Get the #$%& out of here, you hippie.
The RedSox and Rangers are good offensive teams. Anyone (including CC) starting against the is nerve-wracking. This meme is getting really stale.
Everything in all of life is nerve-wracking, including nerves and wracks themselves.
Sincerely,
Greg
i laughed
poor greg. i thought i was a worrier
Yeah, but where are the doom and gloomers tonight? My point was really around “the sky is falling” rants that happen when a starter has a bad couple of innings in a game in august (Oh my here come the Rays!)
I don’t think that’s the issue, the issue here is the starter behind CC. I mean lets be honest, the Yankees aren’t compared to the rest of baseball. They’re compared to the Red Sox, and now the Phillies. The rotation after CC is pretty fucking weak and they don’t match up well with Beckett or anyone else in the Phillies rotation.
Scary fly ball. Sweaty Freddy and sweating fans.
das it for Freddy?
Freddy drinking Dasani? I thought MLB was a Pepsi sponsored league?

I expect DRob to be perfect and strike out minimum 2 batters per inning. this is fucking ridiculous. I demand a refund.
I’m worried that this is the beginning of his regression and he’ll pitch worse than Burnett for the next 15 months. You can’t prove to me that that scenario won’t possibly happen.
option him to AAA so we don’t have to find out.
DRob’s HR/FB for the past 5 minutes is 100%. Meanwhile, Manny Banuelos sits in Scranton, waiting for a promotion.
Clearly, this organization does not trust its prospects.
Banuelos sucks anyway. Just another overhyped Yankees prospect. If he was any good, the Yankees would ruin him anyway.

Need to open this up a bit. Not feeling comfortable, Mo forgive me.
Mo forgives, but he doesn’t forget.
Insurance runs plz.
Robinson Cano… Good at baseball
I wonder why left handers dont try and drag bunt against gonzalez? he literally runs off the mound
No Andruw?
I don’t understand that at all. What possible reason would there be not to pinch hit there?
why not PH Andruw?
Because this game isn’t the ALDS?
so what? It doesn’t hurt anything to PH Andruw, and it gives you a better chance of something good happening there. Why use Mo now, this isn’t the ALDS, use Ayala instead.
You already know Andruw is mashing the ball against lefties, but Posada has been swinging a good bat too of late. Why not give him a chance to jumpstart the bad side of his platoon split between now and October?
Sure, it’s probably fruitless, but you don’t absolutely NEED that AB, so let Jorge have it.
Pitchers are different; they need regular work (but not too much of it).
Posada isn’t earning starts against LHP no matter what he does there. They don’t need him against LHP, it doesn’t matter if he gets jump started or not. An insurance run, on the other hand, could prove useful. NBD, but I don’t see how they gain anything by leaving Posada in there. Andruw may get PH AB’s in bigger spots down the road, why not give him reps now to get as comfortable with it as possible.
I didn’t say anyone was giving Posada a start against LHP, just that Posada improving against LHP would be a nice bonus, since there’s still a decent chance he faces one or two during the playoffs (when a lefty comes in following a righty start when Jones has already been used, or during extra innings).
don’t think one AB against a LHP in August will have any bearing on how Posada does against LHP in the playoffs
really no big deal either way, but using Jones there is much more useful than using Posada
don’t think one AB against a LHP in August will have any bearing on how Posada does against LHP in the playoffs.
I agree, which is why it would be nice to get him a few more between now and the end of the season.
Point is, assuming pinch hitting Jones for Posada increases your chances of adding an insurance run in that situation, you’re weighing the value of that potential insurance run in the top of the 9th in an August 29th game against the Orioles for a team that’s 27 games above .500 with a 99% playoff odds (while you have the best closer in the history of baseball warming up to pitch the 9th) against the (slim) chances that a handful of August/September PAs against lefties jumpstarts the other half of Posada’s platoon split.
There’s arguments each way, it’s not a no-brainer that you absolutely must pinch hit Jones in that situation like you claimed.
holy shit posada, do you really have to be that effing slow??
Okay, that was pretty cool.

OMG Jorge is SO fucking slow. HGow do you not beat that?!?!?!?>

I’m happy I’m wrong. GJ Mo.
Put it on the left side!
Mo being Mo and Reynolds being Reynolds.
Ball don’t lie.

Yankees Bitches!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Save number 34? I had no idea Mo had that many. Niceee…
man i wish swisher was my big brother. what a badass
and he is murdering it for my fantasy team
Reynolds swings and misses. And that’s a wrap.
YOU GET IT? Reynolds Wrap. Hardee Har Har
Is that JJ Hardy Har Har?
Nice.
Nick Swisher needs to stop saying “tenacity.”
Andre the Giant + Wallace Shawn = my ultimate sexual fantasy.
So Boston is off two days in a row before this three game series….
/notfair
The Yankees won, but they still suck because they split this series.
How dare they not go 162-0
Confidence Level: 0
Fact: Swisher’s best month was June, but no one noticed because his totals still didn’t look that good.

Okay, so the Yankees are playing the Los Angeles Baltimore Orioles of Anaheim tonight, right? 10:00 pm start time?
Looks like I missed a good game. Any Yankee win is good.
Not for the trolls/cliff jumpers. This type of game is miserable.
I’m probably the most aggressively pessimistic one here, and the only wins that I have second thoughts about are the ones where Hughes gets lit up. Bats will go quite every once in a while. I just hope Swisher can pull out a 30 HR season, he’s been one shy the past couple of years and I’d like to see him hit that milestone again.
Jeremy Kerley in the wildcat: nice.
Drove down to the stadium, it was gorgeous. Great win. They are 9-1 in games I see live. Cashman should buy me season tix.
Would anyone like this trade?: http://www.nydailynews.com/spo....._mets.html
Absolutely not. Underperforming high-priced pitcher always tops underperforming high-priced position player.
Quit trolling. Jason Bay would hit well as a Yankee and you know it. Put him in that bandbox of a ball park and he’d be close to what he was in Boston. Get some perspective.
I take it you haven’t bothered to look at Bay’s home/road splits with the Mets and just assumed CitiField has killed him.
You’re telling someone that if Jason Bay were a Yankee he’d be an all-star, and you’re the one telling him that he needs perspective.
I’d just like to clarify that for everyone.
The ballpark is actually helping Bay, it seems.
2010 home: .277/.371/.459
2010 away: .243/.326/.355
2011 home: .267/.349/.406
2011 away: .206/.292/.289
Stupid facts.
Mister Delaware is anything but a troll.
Yeah, I always thought he was legit.
Freddy did a really nice job last night and he deserves a lot of credit. Hope he can continue at this level of performance for the remainder of the season and playoffs.
I agree with the prevailing sentiments about Buck. Still don’t get why he has on a jacket in the dugout even if the temps are in the upper 90′s. Just seems weird.
Looking forward to roster expansion this Thursday and hope to see Jesus Montero get some playing time to see what he looks like against big league competition.
