Yankees outright Jeff Marquez to Triple-A

The Yankees have outrighted Jeff Marquez to Triple-A Scranton in what is basically a paper move. Marquez was already on the 60-day disabled list, so he’s not taking up a spot on the 40-man roster, but the outright removes him from the 40-man completely. Now they won’t have to activate him when his 30-day rehab window ends next week.

Marquez was pretty much the first guy on the 40-man roster chopping block, but his shoulder injury and subsequent 60-day DL’ing bought him a little time. The Yankees will still have some roster trimming to do before September call-ups, especially if they plan on bringing non-40-man players Jesus Montero and George Kontos to the show in the season’s final month. Gotta figure Justin Maxwell will be one roster casualty, but the other is a little up in the air.

He’ll just get replaced with another mop. The front office is obsessed with mops.

  2. dan says:

What’s the point of Steve Garrison? He hasn’t had an ERA under 5 since 2008, and both K and HR rates are pretty abysmal.

    • Brian S. says:

He throws with his left hand. He’ll have a job pitching for somebody for the next decade, minor leagues or no.

  3. Jesse says:

Bring up Kontos on Thursday to piggy back Burnett in Fenway. With the way the rotation is he’ll start one of the games.

    • Rich in NJ says:

Why can’t Noesi do that? Not stretched out enough?

    • AJSux says:

AJ in Fenway should be the final nail in his coffin. I’ll bet that gutless feeble minded piece of shit doesn’t make it out of the first inning.

      • Gonzo says:

        Reverse jinx no-hitter!

        I wish.

      • Accent Shallow says:

        Burnett v. Wakefield.

        Guaranteed 1-0 ending, now.

        • Jesse says:

No, the Red Sox are actually smart and they’re starting their 3 best starters, Lackey, Beckett, and Lester. Girardi could have easily started Nova on Friday and then he could start on Wednesday or Thursday.

      • Steve S. says:

I’m as down on AJ as the next guy, but “gutless feeble minded piece of shit” is just going way too far. His stuff isn’t as good as it used to be, and he doesn’t strike as a guy with the tools to reinvent himself.

People have always misunderstood AJ’s struggles as a lack of character, and its really just who he is as a pitcher. His tendency to try harder when things go badly just makes matters worse, but its not the root of the problem.

  4. Kontos deserves a call up but I don’t think it will happen:
    1) if they don’t call him up they can control another person who is on the 40 man for a couple more months. Leaves options open.
    2) Kontos is not critical to big league team, Montero could be.
I agree that sucks for Kontos but that’s my guess. We will know soon.
He will be put on 40 man or traded b4 December, but they don’t have to make that decision now. There is no value in bringing him up to “see how he does in MLB”; they already know he’s ML ready.

  5. Brian S. says:

Please tell me how we don’t get swept with Colon-Hughes-AJ lined up to pitch in Fenway? How are we going to win A game? Has Lackey reverted to his sucky form yet?

  6. Reggie Corona has to be gone soon too

  7. Jorge says:

Would love to see Kontos get a shot, as well as second shot for a guy like Whelan. Would love to not have to worry enough to be able to throw Brackman out there and see what happens. September callup time can sometimes be fun. Still remember Mattingly’s first at-bat as a September call up.

  8. Naved says:

Brackman should be consider for a call up. Maybe Betances too.
