Game 162: End of the line

(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

This is always a sad day. I swear, the season goes by faster and faster every year. Here’s the lineup, for the first five or so innings anyway…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B – still going to bat third against lefties
Robinson Cano, DH
Alex Rodriguez, 3Bscratched because the knee is acting up
Nick Swisher, RF
Andruw Jones, LF
Jesus Montero, C
Eduardo Nunez, 2B
Brandon Laird, 3B

Dellin Betances, SP

The game starts at 7pm ET and can be seen on YES  locally  or ESPN nationally. Enjoy the last meaningless game of 2011.

  1. Sheepmeister says:

Jesus at C. Its a Christmas miracle!!!!!!!!

  2. Jesse says:

I’m only 18 years old and the season goes by WAY too fast. Wonder how much faster it goes when I get older…

  3. The Big City of Dreams says:

And now Alex is out with a sore right knee

  4. Erica says:

    A-Rod scratched. Le sigh.

  5. Jimmy McNulty says:

So is Jeter going to DH? Nuñez at short stop?

  6. Xstar7 says:

Dellin Betances throwing his first major league start being caught by Jesus Montero, the potential of the Red Sox being knocked out of the playoffs (or at least have to play a game 163 tomorrow) in a few hours, and Old Man Jeter’s last stand at hitting .300 on the year. What a way to end the season.

  7. Pants Lendel-stros. says:

Dellin’s continued development is what I’m looking forward to the most… Oh and some kind of uptick in velocity for Hughes would be nice as well.

I’m assuming that the regs(except Montero obviously) will play a few innings and call it night. Other than that tonight should make a very exciting night of baseball.

  8. jjyank says:

I work nights and go to class at night, so I haven’t been able to see Jesus catch. You guys think he’s capable back there?

  9. Jesus Freak says:

Meanwhile, the heroic, gritty, Greatest.Team.Evah.Assembled.®™ takes on the 3rd worse team in all of baseball.

    What an even match-up!

  10. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

According to Mitch Williams, this is a must win for the Yankees because they “don’t match up with the Rays!!!”

  11. Guest says:

The lineup against lefties is…sick. The sickness factor is increased when you look at how much better Jeter, Swish, and Tex are against lefties than they are against righties.

Then when you factor in how much better the righty platoon guys (Jones and Montero)are against lefties than the lefty platoon guys (Posada and Gardner) are against righties…you can see why they are 36-16 against lefties.

I think the Yanks have 5(!) guys who have a .900+ OPS against lefties (Jeter, Swisher, Grandy, Tex, Jones). That list does not include Montero (for SSS reasons), but he has a 1.282 OPS against lefties so far. And Robbie Cano’s OPS against lefties? .896.

So, that’s five “against lefty regulars” with a .900+ OPS (all with well over 120 ABs against lefties), a young masher with a SSS 1.282 OPS against lefties, and a seventh guy with a .896 OPS. A-Rod is the EIGHTH best hitter against against lefties in this lineup, and its not particularly close. That’s INSANE.

By comparison, in the vs. righty lineup, only Grandy is above .900 against righties ( eeking by at .902 ), only Grandy and Cano are above .850, and five guys that are sub .800 (Tex, Swish, Gardner, Martin, and Jeter at an eye-popping .668).

Honestly, I think they’re lefty/righty splits are so pronounced that it would be a non-insignificant advantage if they played the Rangers over the Tigers. (Understanding that five game playoffs are a crap shoot and anything can and will happen in such a random sample).

  12. Cy Pettitte says:

I’m so fucking pumped they gave this start to Dellin and didn’t just do like Proctor, Laffey, Ayala, Valdes for 2 innings each. Made an awesome day for baseball even more awesome.

    You did good, Joe.

  13. Ethan says:

I want to watch this game so badly but have so much work to do. College really sucks sometimes.

  14. jjyank says:

DId they not do the player manager thing this year?

  15. Xstar7 says:

That “strike three” to Jeter was low and inside.

  16. Dela G says:

I had no idea that Alfredo Simon threw 96. Damn

  17. Chen Meng Wang says:

Derek, let me say one more time, thank you for an amazing season. I remember I said after your 3,000th hit game I said “Now somebody remind him it’s not 2001 anymore.” I’m not going to lie, I thought you where done. Thank you again for proving me wrong.

  18. Mike Axisa says:

Let’s make a deal. The Yankees will let the Rays win if they let Granderson steal the six bases he needs to go 30-30.

  19. Kevin G. says:

Did the Rays even sellout their World Series games?

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I don’t know, but they were about 2,000 short of a sellout for the 3 playoff games at the Trop last year.

  20. TomH says:

I have a bad feeling about the Arod scratching. It may help explain the poor quality of his swings recently

  21. dalelama says:

Hopefully the delicate Arod will be so wonderful to grace us with his presence this post season. How a guy who has done so little can have a sore knee is beyond me. What a waste of cash he is.

    • Guest says:

2009 playoffs say hello (so do the 2005 and 2007 MVP seasons). Have the Yanks overpaid A-Rod? Hell yes. Is his contract stupid? Of course.

But he hasn’t been a waste of cash. Far, far from it. (Now for the years 2014-2017…things might get ugly).

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

    uhhhh oh they’re choking

  23. Rey22 says:

Good thing Proctor is on deck later today to hand the lead back to the Rays.

  24. Guest says:

    Ben Buckner.

  25. Widget says:

damn it why is Cano so damn good :)

  26. Hall and Nokes says:

If we’re going to win this I’d like it to be on awesome plays and not total fail from the Rays.

  27. Greg says:

Does Lester throw a sinker regularly?

  28. Rey22 says:

    Still overthrowing.

  29. TomH says:

If the Rays can’t take advantage of the Betances/Montero combo, they deserve to finish out of the money.

  30. karel capek says:

    2001: A David Cone Odyssey

We start off with monkeys and bones. Thus Spoke Zarathustra is playing in the background. A monkey picks up a bone while another throws a rock at it. The monkey swings the bone like a club…and it’s a swing and a miss! The monkey threw the first perfect game! That was David Cone’s ancestor. The monkey throws the bone in the air and…it turns into a train!

Yes now it’s clips of Buster Keaton’s silent classic The General. Then yada yada yada David Cone is eating dinner and spills his drink. Then he’s old and in bed. Then he points to a giants baseball card of himself. Then he’s a catcher’s mitt or something. Dun na na! Dun na na! Dun na na na na dun na na na na!

Cone then meets a computer named Al. “Al open the booth doors.” “I’m sorry Dave I can’t do that.” “Al open the booth doors!” Daisy….daisy…give me your answer…do….

    The End.

    • a.hinds says:

ill do anything to understand this reference.
watch 2001 space odyssey i know, but
do i really have to read the zarathustra.
      and the buster keaton flick.
      but wait.. whats the point?
      help man.

  31. Greg says:

WHo is further along in development Dellin or Manny?

  32. Tom says:

Can’t catch the game (thank you ESPN for this game being the only one of the four games they aren’t showing)…

Is Betances still all over the place?

  33. Heisenberg says:

I think Kruk just said that one of the reasons that Joyce hit the 3 run homer was because of the triple lay the inning before.

Also Longoria is a good hitter because he took a big cut at a 3-1 pitch.

  34. Cy Pettitte says:

    yay Dellin

  35. Cy Pettitte says:

holy shit Dellin is throwing some nasty offspeed stuff.

  36. Naved says:

    Back to back K’s. NICE!

  37. Xstar7 says:

Wow, that was a great pitch to put away Damon.

  38. Heisenberg says:

    Butterflies gone.

  39. Skip says:

That’s some nasty stuff right there. Give the kid another year of AAA to work on his command and we’ll see him at some point again next year.

  40. BK2ATL says:

Good job, Dellin. Welcome to the MLB. 1st successful inning as a starter. Kid has some pitches and movement when he settles down.

  41. RaeGun says:

Still at least a year away, but I’m liking what I am seeing from Dellin.

  42. Chen Meng Wang says:

Bossman, it’s not cool to steal from Jesus.

  43. Cy Pettitte says:

BJ y u do this to Jesus?

  44. Jetrer says:

    Robbing Jesus
Upton you shalt go straight to hell

  45. Pat D says:

I think I’ve decided that I need to stop reading or listening to anything on ESPN, or MLBN until after the postseason.

I just find something every day that annoys me.

Today, for example, Jayson Stark gave out his awards. Here were his choices for manager of the year.
    AL: 1) Maddon 2) Leyland 3) Scioscia
    NL: 1) Gibson 2) Manuel 3) LaRussa

My head nearly exploded. Manuel? LaRussa? SCIOSCIA?!?!?!

    • JimIsBored (Jim S) says:

I think I’ve decided that I need to stop reading or listening to anything on ESPN, or MLBN until after the postseason.

      • Pat D says:

Yea, but that would meaning not reading Keith Law, and never watching Prime 9 or QuickPitch, which, let’s face it, is good for someone like me who works a late shift and just wants baseball highlights.

        • JimIsBored (Jim S) says:

Yeah I know. I wasn’t really being serious.

I do use those networks for highlights, but I do have to be careful not to stray to ESPN NY or ESPN Boston.

    • Greg says:

LaRussa makes sense a bit because the Cardinals lost Adam Wainwright at the beginning of the season and nobody thought they would be in this position.

      • Pat D says:

Eh……….I don’t think so. I think his stupid moves have cost the Cardinals at least a few games. Like Monday night’s, for example.

    • jjyank says:

Girardi may not win, and he may not deserve to win, but I do think he’s gotta be top 3.

      • Pat D says:

He won’t win, he might deserve to win, and he probably won’t be top 3.

Remember, Joe Torre only won MOY once. That was in 1998, and IT WASN’T EVEN UNANIMOUS!

    • David, Jr. says:

Scioscia I don’t understand. Leyland is logical. Can’t argue with it. Madden is a contender, aided by the Dustin Pedroia scrappy, common man bullshit.

Girardi should at least be there instead of Scioscia, at a minimum. His best player missed a good part of the year. All kinds of pitching oddities to manage. Jeter hurt.

Typical anti Yankee b.s, like when Jeter lost to Morneau for MVP. To a guy that thinks like this, the big payroll means that they have to win 120 games for Joe to be in the top three.

  46. BK2ATL says:

1 or 2 more innings of Betances, then bring in Hughes or Brackman.

  47. TomH says:

If the Sox are trying to make a deal for a tomorrow-night pitcher, someone should be in a position to take ‘em to the cleaners

  48. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nunie helmet off double. lol.

  49. Stratman9652 says:

162 games later and they still haven’t gotten a helmet for Nunez that fits.

  50. Xstar7 says:

David Price is a Red Sox fan.

  51. Cy Pettitte says:

so conflicted. I like and want to see the kids do well but the Rays just can’t lose this game.

  52. Chen Meng Wang says:

Alfredo Simon is being Alfredo Simon.

  53. rconn23 says:

Red Sox about to blow it open. This is awful. For all the nights for Price not to have anything.

  54. Tyrion Lannister says:

Girardi needs to take the foot off the pedal now. Get this starters out of there.

  55. rconn23 says:

The way Price is throwing, I think Granderson is about to hit one out. I can’t believe this.

  56. jon says:

i dont think i ever wanted the grandy man to hit a homer

  57. DERP says:

    David Ortiz LOL

  58. Tyrion Lannister says:

Hit one of your pop ups, Teix. Buck IBBing Agon in the 3rd inning again.

  59. JimIsBored (Jim S) says:

O’s one out away from getting out of the jam with just 1 run…

  60. jon says:

well at least this is the kinda thing that gets a team rolling if price gets out of it

  61. Cy Pettitte says:

    really not good……

  62. Erica says:

    Oh shit Tex.

  63. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Really Mark…Really?

  64. Jetrer says:

    god dammit Tex

  65. Guest says:

Aaaaaand that’s a tex message I wish had never been sent.

  66. Xstar7 says:

    No postseason for you!

  67. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Proctor can give up 5 runs can’t he?

  68. Skip says:

Well then. Time to warm up Scott Proctor.

  69. Tyrion Lannister says:

    NO! NO! Girardi you idiot.

  70. Ivan says:

Sooooo ummmmm should I be happy.

  71. Hummingbird S. says:

Damn, right down the middle. Now we can only hope the O’s win.

  72. bobtaco says:

    C’mon O’s.

  73. Greg says:

Blame the Rays. Just couldnt get it done.

  74. e says:

    fuck you tex seriously

  75. Hall and Nokes says:

Well, sorry Rays. Enjoy the winter.

  76. Jimmy McNulty says:

Teixeira has had a shitty year.

  77. Tyrion Lannister says:

It’s all up to Alfredo Simon and the Baltimore Os now.

  78. BK2ATL says:

    Now Tex???? Now???

Guess I gotta go back to rooting for Baltimore tonight.

  79. Xstar7 says:

Way to step it up David Price…..

The Orioles really need to win now.

  80. Chen Meng Wang says:

    Lets go O’s

  81. Champagne_whores says:

Dont worry Proctor can give up a five run lead as fast as shit through a goose.

  82. RaeGun says:

Tex hits a grand slam and he still gets called out. Haha.. This is fun.

  83. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

The Rays can still win this. Girardi just needs to have Proctor and Laffey pitch the rest of the game. Come on Joe!

  84. JimIsBored (Jim S) says:

This is bizarro RAB right now.

  85. Pat D says:

I actually want the Red Sox in the postseason. Simply because then the Yankees can get revenge at least twice.

As I see it, the Yankees owe the following teams:
    Rangers (2010), Indians (2007), Tigers (2006), Angels (2005), Red Sox (2004), Marlins (2003), Diamondbacks (2001), Dodgers (1981), Royals (1980), Reds (1976), Cardinals (1964) and Pirates (1960).

  86. Aaaaaaand Boston is in the playoffs…

  87. Thomas Cassidy says:

Why does everyone want the Rays to win? The Red Sox need to be in the playoffs. Morons on RAB.

And any “fan” whoever roots against their team to win is not a fan, I don’t care what the situation is. Go root for the Mets.

    • Jetrer says:

it is a completely meaningless game
any fan who gets hung up on whether a team wins or loses a completely meaningless game is a moron. Go join your friends at Citifield.

      • Thomas Cassidy says:

        I’m a Yankees fan, moron.

People are bitching about Tex hitting a grand slam. I don’t want them to lose, I want the Sox in the playoffs.

Who would you people rather face, Boston or Tampa Bay in the ALCS?

This is why you people sit around on RAB all day.

        • Mike Axisa says:

Grow up and stop calling each other names.

I have no interest in facing the Red Sox in the ALCS. There are no Kyle Weilands and Andrew Millers in the playoffs.

          • Thomas Cassidy says:

If there are no Weilands or Millers in the playoffs, then why would they be pitching every five days when they are fighting for a spot? It’s the best Boston ahs right now.

        • Jetrer says:

          “you people”
          you’re here too idiot

          “I’m a Yankees fan, moron.”
I realize that, I was saying you should switch to join the other morons at Citifield.

“Who would you people rather face, Boston or Tampa Bay in the ALCS?”

Both are tough teams. Boston is more talented. Tampa is playing slightly better. Both are capable of beating the Yankees. The Yankees are also capable of beating both teams.

    • jon says:

maybe because those fans realize that the red sox are a massively superior team than the rays and if they get hot again could easily win the WS?

  88. Tyrion Lannister says:

I’m not even sure Lefty Williams could blow this one. It’s all up to the Os.

  89. Champagne_whores says:

Where is Mitre when we really need him?

  90. Guest says:

I have to say, that was the strangest feeling I have had as a Yankee fan. To be genuinely upset that a Yankee hit a grand slam.

I have always prided myself on the fact that, as a Yankee fan, I cared way more about the Yanks doing well than the Sox doing poorly, while our friends to the north had an irrational hatred for the Yanks that surpassed all else, including their love for the Sox.

And now, here I am, upset that a struggling Yankee hit a grand slam off a good pitcher. In a game that’s meaningless for the Yanks, but still.

Am I becoming…one of them? (Shudders).

  91. Dela G says:

well the rays’ fans are dead silent

  92. U Thant says:

It’s like I’ve stepped into an alternite universe.

  93. Cy Pettitte says:

time for 7 innings of Proctor.

  94. ItsATarp says:

Not the yanks job to hand the Rays a play off spot. If they wanted one then they should play better. Price choking is his fault, not Tex’s or the yanks doing what they do…which is win.

  95. RaeGun says:

    How is THAT a ball?

  96. mt says:

Scoring 8 runs agaisnt Lester and now 5 runs against Price – it seems that we do really rake lefthanders, even elite ones.

Problem: Detroit has only righthanded starters (Texas, on other hand, is starting lefthander Holland after lefthander Wilson).

    • Sarah says:

Remember a few weeks ago when the Yanks clobbered King Felix? I think he’s a pretty good RHP.

And just last week, didn’t they beat Big Game James Shields?

anything can happen in October, but I’m not going to stress about whether the opponent’s rotation is LHP or RHP. I only want the Yanks to face Texas so I can go to the game next week.

  97. Cy Pettitte says:

Dellin can’t be good for more than 50 or so pitches, can he?

  98. rconn23 says:

You can’t blame the Yankees. Price has to compete better than this.

  99. Sarah says:

I was going to say Lester is being pretty efficient so far, but he did just walk the leadoff guy in the 3rd. Maybe this is the beginning of the Os come back.

  100. Dela G says:

man that hit his ass hard

  101. SevenAces says:

Don’t count the Fighting Showalters out of it yet.

  102. Tom says:

Sutcliffe (doing the ESPN Bos/Balt game) is a damn idiot.

“Worst case Lester needs to hand the ball to Papelbon” (Worst case?)
“Bard has become an everday player” (he’s pitched 10 times in Sept)

  103. Champagne_whores says:

They should have let Igawa pitch this game.

  104. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    2-1 ORIOLES!!!

  105. Skip says:

2 Run HR for JJ Hardy. Baltimore up 2-1

  106. Tyrion Lannister says:

GET OUT OF THAT PARK! 2-1 OS!!!!!

  107. Widget says:

Baltimore wants to see a game 163.

  108. Jesus Freak says:

Lester gIveS up a 2-run tator!

  109. Cy Pettitte says:

  110. Chen Meng Wang says:

Why in the name of Mo would you throw a fastball in to JJ Hardy?

    either way FUCK YEAH HARDY!!!!!

  111. rconn23 says:

It’s up to the O’s now. Tampa is dead in this game.

  112. Hall and Nokes says:

    I love Gary Thorne.

  113. Cy Pettitte says:

get Price out of there, christ.

  114. Xstar7 says:

JJ Hardy! Was that a great acquisition for the Orioles or was that a great acquisition for the Orioles?

  115. Champagne_whores says:

Next inning i want proctor in
    Posada in cf
    Cc romine in lf
    Burnett in rf
    Its tampas only shot

  116. Chen Meng Wang says:

Joe, please pull everybody. Last thing we need is somebody pulling something in a meaningless game #amirite?

  117. Erica says:

    You know what?

    You guys are all awesome.

Here we are, gathered on the last night of the season without a (baseball) care in the world until Friday. Rooting for the O’s, semi-sorta-not-really rooting for our team. This rocks.

  118. Eirias says:

As always, the Orioles cleaning up our mess.

  119. rconn23 says:

You have to pull Price. It’s like he’s on the take he’s pitching so poorly.

  120. jon says:

jones is about to swing out of his shoes

  121. BK2ATL says:

Hahaha!!! JJ Hardy to the rescue. Lester might fade fast after the adrenaline wears off. Let’s go Baltimore.

Betances looks pretty damn decent. One more inning and I’m good. Another year in AAA to refine the command and we got ourselves another winner.

Hughes for the 4th and 5th. Kontos for the 6th. Then it’s Proctor time. 5 runs in a hurry is right in his wheelhouse.

  122. Dela G says:

nunez getting intentionally walked cracks me up

  123. jon says:

    lol walking nuni?

  124. Xstar7 says:

DAVID PRICE is intentionally walking EDUARDO NUNEZ.

  125. Mike Axisa says:

I can’t do anything but laugh at that IBB.

  126. Zooboy says:

I half expected Nunez’s helmet to fly off as ball four sailed in.

  127. Erica says:

I feel bad for Price, because I kinda like him.

  128. jon says:

holy shit did you guys see dellin in the dugout? his hand made that bottle of gateraid look like a travel size one

  129. Chen Meng Wang says:

I’m starting to think both David Price and Alfredo Simon are Sox fans…

  130. Champagne_whores says:

I think knocking the rays off is a giant FU to maddon and how he has managed in the past. Agressive style play. Maybe cash and joey want the Sox in the ALCS.

  131. jon says:

if youre nunez do you ask for that ball? prob the only time in his life hes getting IBB

  132. Dela G says:

    are you fucking serious??

    calling a god damn balk?

  133. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    fucking Simon balks.

  134. jon says:

    a fucking balk?

  135. mustang says:

    this is painful

  136. Cy Pettitte says:

Simon let them tie it on a balk? wat?

  137. Cy Pettitte says:

I wish YES could just do the postseason broadcast. that would make the postseason infinitely better.

  138. Champagne_whores says:

Jesus going to be in piazza class of defensive catchers

  139. JoeyG says:

So Girardi complains that there isn’t enough time to rest between the regular season and the playoffs, and in the final game of the year he doesn’t sit his regulars? Why aren’t Pena, Romine, Golson, and Dickerson playing. Why isn’t proctor going 9 innnings? Why was it okay to play them against the red sox but not the rays with a chance to control the Red sox’ fate. The Red Sox are the Yanks’ rival on the field, off the field, in business etc…Why aren’t they ensuring that the Red Sox have a more difficult time getting in the playoffs. Why is it okay to drive up the price on the Red Sox acquiring Crawford but not okay to totally tank it vs the Rays to ensure that the Sox at least have to play a playin game to get in the postseason. Someone explain this to me. Maybe I’m just crazy…

    • nedro says:

Settle down, the scrubs will be in later. As for your other beef, it’s not their job to keep the Sox out of the playoffs. It’s Buck’s. On the other hand, he probably hates the Yankees more than your average Sox fan.

  140. Cy Pettitte says:

wouldn’t be a game in the Trop without something like that happening

  141. Champagne_whores says:

What is joe saving proctor for?

  142. Dela G says:

    great play by laird!

  143. Will (the other one) says:

Tampa’s stealing signs! Sound the alarms!!1!

  144. HulkHeyman says:

Whatching the orioles v. Red Sox game is completely annoying every time Ellsbury comes to the plate they refer to him as the league MVP.

  145. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Michael Kay: “we dated the same girl all season”

Kim Jones: “you didn’t double up on me”

    AaronGuielWithASmile: *vomits*

  146. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

oooh it’s Laffey!! use the binder all you want tonight, Joe.

  147. Hummingbird S. says:

Joe G. managing like it’s game 7 of the triple-A world series.

  148. Ethan says:

    Put in Proctor!

  149. Champagne_whores says:

Thank god laugher good for a three run inning .

  150. Tyrion Lannister says:

    ESPN pushing Ellsbury for MVP.

  151. Chen Meng Wang says:

Have a day why don’t ya Tex.

  152. Xstar7 says:

    Have yourself a day, Tex.

  153. Erica says:

  154. Sarah says:

Tex is stat padding before the post-season.

  155. Cy Pettitte says:

    Teix <3 Boston

  156. Jetrer says:

its a shame Tex likely won’t see any lefties in the first round

  157. Across the pond says:

So Tex is being annoying today :)

  158. Chen Meng Wang says:

    And Ratface goes yard.

  159. Sarah says:

    Effing Pedroia.

  160. Tyrion Lannister says:

Simon has given up the lead. Rip Herschbeck a new one, Buck. Come on Os.

  161. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Proctor please!

  162. Al says:

So Tex blows his load in this game and goes Ofer in ALCS

  163. Cy Pettitte says:

    Fuck that fucking munchkin Pedroia

  164. Rey22 says:

Dammit Tex if there ever was a day for you to uselessly pop up like you have all year, it was today :/

  165. Champagne_whores says:

Ok another run and we will need burnett to pitch the rest of the game!

  166. Justin says:

of all the days Teix had to stop sending mile high popups to the infield….

  167. rconn23 says:

Unreal. Tex will now go 0-12 in the first round.

  168. ArchStanton says:

This thing is getting close to being Proctor-proof….

  169. rconn23 says:

At 6-0 Girardi should start pulling regulars.

  170. BK2ATL says:

Don’t AJ, Proctor, and Laffey need some work? Like right now.

C’mon Buck. Get those kids focused again.

  171. Sarah says:

What can we do to help the Os win?

  172. Champagne_whores says:

Here comes a rays rally and 3 runs

  173. Tyrone Sharpton says:

Damn Tampon Bay Rays…Boston-Texas it is :( I wish NY would have avoided Verlander

  174. Sarah says:

    The Os need some defense…

  175. Widget says:

Tampa only has themselves to blame if they miss the playoffs. They didn’t play that great of baseball down the stretch. Compare that to St. Louis. They’ve played lights out to get to today.

  176. yankees=warriors says:

Seems like the Rays players are all trying to hit the big homerun, sad.

  177. Kevin says:

How about the fact the pither on the mound tonight will be 0-6 in September. THat’s why the Rays won’t make it to the post season..not because of Sunday night.

  178. TomH says:

I like Michael Kay but he spent way too much time this season talking about Vernon Wells and how Toronto avoided having to pay anything to dump him and his albatross contract.

  179. The Big City of Dreams says:

    Too many homeruns

  180. Cy Pettitte says:

    damn Rays

  181. TomH says:

Damn, now they’re just piling on.

  182. Xstar7 says:

    That was just mean, Andruw.

  183. Erica says:

    Uh hey there, Andruw!

  184. Cy Pettitte says:

    Reynolds lead off double.

  185. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    it’s up to the Orioles.

  186. yankees=warriors says:

Hopefully , this is what we’ll see in the playoffs.

  187. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Andruw Jones had an unbelievable second half. That pickup ended up working out really well for us.

  188. Tom says:

I find the narrative before the games today “the Yankees should think twice about helping TB and that pitching rotation” to be kind of funny.

  189. James A says:

Girardi should be fired. This is just an unacceptable performance for a must-lose game.

  190. BK2ATL says:

This game is over. Thanks Tex and now Andruw. Also, how about the fact that our hodge-podge of pitching so far thru 4 innings have allowed 1 hit, 3 BBs and 1 HBP.

Tampa doesn’t deserve to win. Fuck Maddon.

Now onto to the Baltimore cheering section for the night.

    • nedro says:

“Also, how about the fact that our hodge-podge of pitching so far thru 4 innings have allowed 1 hit, 3 BBs and 1 HBP.”

Wow. The starters haven’t even been able to throw shut-down ball lately. Should I be worried?

  191. jon says:

    stupid fucking Os

  192. Greg says:

Reynolds thrown out at home on a grounder to Scutaro

  193. Erica says:

    Lavahhhhhnway. Oy.

  194. Sarah says:

Stupid Os. Buck, this is your world series Game 7. Make it count.

  195. BK2ATL says:

Off-topic: How much does Ben Zobrist’s error, which led to a run, hurt both his WAR and UZR?

    • Tom says:

Not a lot… it impacts the ErrR component of UZR, but he gets credit for the range (though it’s still a net negative)

    • mbonzo says:

I believe errors are counted as normally fielded balls for UZR, which means that it actually helps fWAR.

    • BK2ATL says:

But then, does that make any common sense, esp. if the Rays don’t score any runs and lose?

His error would have, in effect, cost the team the win. Wins Above Replacement???

  196. Widget says:

Between the BALK and the PEDROIA HOMER and now THE PLAY AT THE PLATE!!!!!!!!!!!, I’m not sure which narrative ESPN will go with tonight.

  197. Champagne_whores says:

Can hughes possibly give this game away? Stay tuned

  198. Greg says:

Thing about the Red Sox is that who are they going to pitch on Friday?

Wont be Lester and if they throw Beckett it would be on three days

  199. TampaYankee says:

I am loving this game so much!

  200. jon says:

    lol ESPN chat

    Comment From Jon
do the red sox really celebrate if they wins this game? the yankees did more than the red sox to get them into the play offs

Jim Bowden: For all they’ve been through…they better celebrate with Cristal, Dom and Perrier Jouet Floral….because it will probably be their final celebration of 2011

  201. Erica says:

BJ Upton’s at-bat song is “Why I Love You” by Jay-Z & Kanye West. Sweet.

  202. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I really hope those Angels can man the fuck up and beat the Rangers. The way we clobbered Price, Wilson/Holland for 3/5 games seems like lots of fun.

  203. Greg says:

Cant say that we didnt try to give it to them.

  204. Sarah says:

Oh please, let Lester blow it.

  205. BK2ATL says:

Welcome back, Phil!!! Nice to see the velocity back.

  206. mbonzo says:

Looks to me like Lester is starting to lose it.

  207. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Any chance we could trade Proctor to Boston so they can get that extra pitcher they were looking for?

  208. Greg says:

Back to back walks by Lester.

  209. Tyrion Lannister says:

Let’s get a rally here. Lester’s tired and that pen is tired. Let’s go Os!

  210. Cy Pettitte says:

2 walks to start the inning with Vlad and Wieters coming up. now’s the time O’s.

  211. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Bunt Vlad!

  212. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Lestaaaahhhhh is in trouble again.

Francona should start thinking about going to the pen.

  213. Erica says:

  214. jon says:

wow that was a really impressive red sox play

  215. nedro says:

    Fuckin GIDP by Vlad.

  216. Cy Pettitte says:

come the fuck on Vlad. grounds into a fucking double play.

  217. Tyrion Lannister says:

What a fucking luck job. Could Vlad be any slower?

  218. Greg says:

    Nice play.

  219. Sarah says:

the midget with a “tremendous” double play. Lame Os, lame.

    • TomH says:

Can’t be too hard on them. They’re like that team that Ohio State kicked the tar out of back in the Woody Hayes era. At game’s end, Woody tried to console the losing coach: “Don’t feel too bad. It’s just that our players are better than yours.”

  220. Chen Meng Wang says:

    God Damn their grittyness.

  221. mbonzo says:

That was a nifty double play by Scutaro.
BTW, over or under 15 minutes till Matt makes an obligatory Yankees don’t know what they’re doing beating the Rays post.

  222. Cy Pettitte says:

Wieters needs to do his Bonds impression against a lefty.

  223. Widget says:

not surprised at all by that double play. Orioles have had their chances to score but Lester is just too clutch.

  224. Champagne_whores says:

    That dp had grit.

  225. Pasqua says:

Death, taxes, and Vlad not beating out a double play ball.

  226. Kevin says:

    double play..bleh

  227. mustang says:

    Lester is DONE!!!!

  228. BK2ATL says:

Damn, Jeter will finish the year sub .300

  229. Hall and Nokes says:

    Vlad needs a Segway

  230. Widget says:

With Vlad batting I would have tried a double steal. Lester was all over the place.

  231. Cy Pettitte says:

    time for redemption Adam Jones.

  232. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    4-3 Detroit, at least that’s good…

  233. Kevin says:

I know people will rip apart Joe Girardi for Sunday night’s game, but the fact remains if David Price had just won one of his games this month, there will be a deciding game tommorrow.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile says:

People shouldn’t go overboard with the criticism of Girardi.

It’s not his job to make sure Tampa makes the playoffs. They’ve had plenty of opportunities in the last 10 games to make up ground, they haven’t gotten it done.

  234. jon says:

jones with a strike out? never saw that coming

  235. Monteroisdinero says:

I have been out and missed the game until now. How can we be shutting out Tampa? Montero doesn’t have 20 passed balls?

  236. Jesus Freak says:

Desperately holding on to a nail-biting 1 run lead against the 3rd worse team in baseball just proves how Boston is cut about everyone else.

  237. Chen Meng Wang says:

Only The Orioles can get three walks in an inning and not push across a single run. God they are awful.

  238. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    O’s = fail

  239. Cy Pettitte says:

fuck these O’s for continually getting my hopes up and then crushing them

  240. yankees=warriors says:

    Thought Hughes would go longer?

  241. Jesus Freak says:

Marco Scutaro just showed why he’s this year’s MVP.

  242. nedro says:

Of course MLBN douchebags calling Scutaro’s DP the “Play of the Night.” Still umm, 10 games going on / yet to start?

  243. Sarah says:

    Angels tie it up!

  244. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I can’t wait for Aceves to get Hughes’d at the beginning of next year.

  245. Erica says:

  246. Rich in NJ says:

Kay is high. Hughes will be on the ps roster.

  247. Cy Pettitte says:

O’s need to get Bard in the game

  248. Tyrion Lannister says:

The fat man out at 2nd trying to two. Who does he think he is, Posada? That may save a run.

  249. Kevin says:

O’s got two runners on via walk and left them stranded.

  250. nedro says:

    Ha ha Papi!

  251. Sarah says:

OMG Ortiz. Trying to leg out a double and slides, out as his pants are coming off.

  252. yankees=warriors says:

Would be fun to see AJ out of the pen.

  253. mbonzo says:

I’d love to see a walkoff by the Orioles off of Papelbon.

  254. Brandon says:

LOL @ Michael Kay thinking this is just to see if Burnett can pitch out of the bullpen. If he can’t, he shouldnt be on the postseason roster since he cant pitch when he starts either.

  255. TampaYankee says:

    AJ in the bullpen eh?

  256. Champagne_whores says:

YeaHhhhhhhh they are warming up burnett. Rays have a shot.

  257. TampaYankee says:

I wish I could trade announcers with you in the NY area.

    I hate these Rays announcers.

  258. Sarah says:

Are the Sox trying to blow out Aceves’ arm? He’s going to pitch for the 4th day in a row.

  259. swishers fauxhawk says:

  260. JohnnyC says:

Deadspin got their hands on some incriminating photos allegedly of Cashman with a woman from Tampa.

  261. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

oh fuck, rain delay in Baltimore.

  262. BK2ATL says:

Baltimore will win this game. Rain delay in the 7th??? Just drowned out the Boston momentum.

Remember what Baltimore did to us earlier this month with the rain. Keep hope alive.

  263. Erica says:

    If it’s the O’s, it’s a rain delay.

  264. Cy Pettitte says:

    Tito is gonna break Ace

  265. Monteroisdinero says:

No hits from our best hitters and still up 7-0. Nice.

  266. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

hopefully the Braves can hold on against the Phillies so there can at least be one game 163 tomorrow.

  267. LiterallyFigurative says:

    It’s raining in B-more.

Wonder if Tito will go to Aceves for two innings and avoid Bard altogether.

  268. Tom says:

Detroit just coughed up the lead in the 8th inning

Both Texas and Detroit are now tied in their games

  269. swishers fauxhawk says:

The radar isn’t on Boston’s side. That storm should pass through before 10:30.

  270. Erica says:

AJ coming in to pitch has forced me to cue this up:

  271. Chen Meng Wang says:

ESPN does realize that Tex got moved down in the Line-up LAST NIGHT not a few nights ago, and it’s against RIGHTIES he got moved down, right?

  272. Kevin says:

Btw, despite what the score says, Lester still looked AWFUL tonight. Only the O’s baserunning blunders and swinging at ball four and a couple of DPS saved him.

  273. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Come on Braves, nail this down. I want a tiebreaker!!

  274. Justin says:

AJ pitching to Jesus. Maybe this is Girardi’s way of giving Tampa a chance.

  275. Tom says:

For folks like me who do not have Yes/My 9… ESPN is now showing the game (sadly the idiot Kruk is doing commentary)

  276. Sarah says:

AJ in! He’s going to keep it close for the Rays.

  277. yankees=warriors says:

    What?! One batter?

  278. Dela G says:

    one batter?? really, joe?

  279. Tom says:

    Good grief Girardi….

  280. Sarah says:

the heck just happened? AJ getting in a little side work?

  281. LiterallyFigurative says:

    AJ as a situational releiver.

  282. Cy Pettitte says:

what the fuck? joe is just messing with us

  283. BK2ATL says:

Hahaha!!!! He brings in Burnett for 1 batter.

    Brackman’s in now!!!!

  284. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I really hope Girardi doesn’t plan on using AJ like this in the playoffs.

  285. Erica says:

For the first time… ever… I wanted to see AJ pitch more. My feelings are confusing me.

  286. Nogomo says:

I think Joe just wanted to see how AJ would deal with coming outta the pen.

  287. Dela G says:

    brackman is fucking gigantic

  288. yankees=warriors says:

    Good to see Brackman, though.

  289. Nogomo says:

We’ve used 7 pitchers. Boston/Balt in rain delay. The O’s have blown some great chances.

  290. Hall and Nokes says:

It’s weird that I feel like Boone Logan is too good for this spot.

  291. Jorge says:

You have to think Brackman and Kontos are now getting extremely long looks in spring training next year. I’ve really liked what I’ve seen.

  292. Cy Pettitte says:

I’m not entirely convinced Brackman isn’t actually 5’9″ and wearing stilts

  293. Jetrer says:

  294. Tom says:

Detroit back up 1, 1 out in the 9th for Valverde

  295. Dela G says:

    eduardo scissorhands again

    fucking pathetic

  296. Will (the other one) says:

    C’mon, Nunie. Man up.

  297. Justin says:

And Nunez reaches his personal milestone on the last game of the season..20 errors! Go Nuneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  298. jon says:

talking to a friend about brackman i told him hes 6’11

he wants his nickname to be the bigger unit

  299. Dela G says:

how was that not a strike 1?

  300. Nogomo says:

8th pitcher coming up, who will it be…

  301. Monteroisdinero says:

Good time for Noonie’s 20th error. Heads up ballplayer. Girardi wants Montero to catch everyone.

  302. Cy Pettitte says:

this is just hilarious. Joe is trolling for sure

  303. Pat D says:

So the Rays really decided they didn’t want it, huh?

I’m saying this sitting at work looking at the line score where they have 2 hits.

  304. Sarah says:

Kimbrel blowing it for the Braves.

  305. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

fucking Braves. they better not blow this.

  306. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Braves choking. Again.

Bases loaded, one out in the 9th.

  307. Greg says:

Phillis have bases loaded with one out in the ninth down one

  308. Cy Pettitte says:

    tie game Phils/Braves at 3

  309. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Braves = O’s

  310. Sarah says:

This is where Joe Maddon out-Girardis Girardi. Boone is better against righties than lefties.

  311. Tyrion Lannister says:

This kid on the Braves is scared. He needs to be taken out right now to preserve the season.

  312. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Kimbrel done after 4 walks, really hope the Braves can pull this off.

  313. Tom says:

    Detroit wins 5-4.

#2 seed will come down to the Tex/ANA game which is tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th

  314. Sarah says:

Poor Kimbrel. His tank is on E. Big time.

  315. On it like sam marsonek says:

    Andruw jones is dutch

    • Sarah says:

I’m bummed this game is a blowout. I was hoping it would be close-ish and Girardi would let Gardy go in half way and steal #50. Oh well.

  316. Kevin says:

O’s choked, period. Lester didn’t pitch any better tonight than he did in any other starts, the O’s just suck.

  317. On it like sam marsonek says:

    Nunez has huge ears

  318. Hall and Nokes says:

Heyward with a chance to do something actually epic in this lost season.

  319. Sarah says:

    Hey look, a rally!

  320. Tom says:

John Kruk “this is going to exciting now”
(2nd and 3rd down 7 runs? Really John?)

  321. ArchStanton says:

Get Proctor up. We need him to shut this rally down….

  322. TampaYankee says:

This isn’t gonna make me feel better going into the post season from Logan.

    Come on!

  323. mbonzo says:

  324. The Big City of Dreams says:

  325. ArchStanton says:

    Oh great. Not good.

  326. Jetrer says:

and Fuck You very much Boone Logan

  327. Rich in NJ says:

    I hate Logan.

  328. Erica says:

  329. Cy Pettitte says:

  330. Rich in NJ says:

    Hate him.

  331. Reggie C. says:

Ehh … this could be bad.

  332. The Big City of Dreams says:

    I just hope it’s a precautionary move

  333. Tom says:

So what happens when the Rays tie this game up and Girardi has used all but his top relievers

At this point it’s just Proctor right? And Noesi who threw Mon?

  334. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

could someone tell me what happened with Boone?

  335. mbonzo says:

Montero is gonna be out of the post season because Boone Logan can’t throw the ball over the plate. He doesn’t deserve a spot on the post season roster, we don’t need a LOOGY.

  336. Hall and Nokes says:

At this point you might as well root for the “most pitchers to ever combine for a shutout” record.

  337. Jorge says:

How dare Boone Logan throw a baseball towards home plate!

  338. Dela G says:

man, how the hell did boone logan leave such a mess?

  339. ArchStanton says:

Phillies can’t be too happy about playing extras here.

  340. Erica says:

  341. Dela G says:

this can’t be fucking serious… wow

  342. ArchStanton says:

    If I didn’t know better…..

  343. Monteroisdinero says:

    Is this game fixed?

  344. Sarah says:

Ok I understand we want to give Tampa a chance but this is not how we want to do it!

  345. Jorge says:

It’s as if Ayala’s entire season was manufactured to lead up to this very moment.

  346. Stratman9652 says:

Damn, if you are gonna throw the game don’t be so obvious about it.

  347. TampaYankee says:

….you have got to be kidding me.

  348. Cy Pettitte says:

keep it going Luis. you’re doing great.

  349. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Bring in proctor, Joe.

  350. Cy Pettitte says:

    this is nonsense.

  351. Xstar7 says:

Boone Logan is going straight to hell for inflicting one of Jesus’s 5 wounds (hand).

  352. Monteroisdinero says:

Sox must be enjoying watching this inning.

  353. StanfordBen says:

    Bring in Proctor!

  354. Bill says:

Girardi’s doing his best Tony LaRussa impression.

  355. Chen Meng Wang says:

Why in god’s name is this game still happening?!

  356. Jorge says:

Sit down, Cory. No shame at all in, um, any of this.

  357. Dela G says:

    FInally, a god damn out

  358. Greg says:

    He swung at ball 4.

  359. Cy Pettitte says:

    Longoria HR please

  360. Sarah says:

Damn it Ayala. Now is not the time to do this.

  361. Tom says:

Kruk seriously thinks Rivera is coming into this game…

Did I mention the guy is an idiot?

  362. Tyrion Lannister says:

  363. ArchStanton says:

The Rays ARE stealing signs. They knew those two pitches were going to hit them….

  364. Rich in NJ says:

    Ayala is so overrated.

  365. Reggie C. says:

you’ve got to be fucking kidding me.

    now i want this game.

  366. Jorge says:

Now’s a great time to just start openly drinking on the field.

  367. TampaYankee says:

  368. Sarah says:

    I don’t know what I’m feeling.

  369. Monteroisdinero says:

Epic inning. I want some Chwduh!

  370. Widget says:

holy shit this is hilarious. Curt Schilling was mad yesterday accusing the yanks of tanking. If they lose this game he may finally explode.

  371. mbonzo says:

Well then… I guess this is what we all wanted. Maybe Montero will be fine and Ayala/Logan will be off the post season roster.

  372. Cy Pettitte says:

  373. Tyrion Lannister says:

    Proctor for the 9th!

  374. Will (the other one) says:

Say it ain’t so, Luis! Say it ain’t so!

  375. karel capek says:

Somebody tell me what I should be feeling.

    • tom says:

This is the kind of screwed up scenario people conjured up when the wild card came along. It’s clear the Yankees could have clinched this game several batters ago, by bringing in DRob. But why should they, given their situation? And yet, if the Rays come back to win, the Red Sox have something of a legitimate gripe, that the Yankees let the Rays have a greater chance than they should have at coming back in a vital game.

It’s built into the system. It’s weird.

      • Tom says:

I think Girardi would have played it straight up if there were 2 off days…

I tend to believe him when he says with games on Fri/Sat he doesn’t want to open up the possibility of 3 games in 4 days (especially if he has to extend any of them in the playoffs)

      • TomH says:

The Yanks owed the Sox nothing, not one damned thing. Were Girardi to have gone full bore to win this game, using the A Team and Robertson, he would have left himself open to criticism for being a fool. The Sox damn near went Oh for September. It’s not the Yankees’ fault they’re in the mess they find themselves.

      • Mike Axisa says:

It’s not fair, but it’s life. The Yankees don’t owe it to the Red Sox to use their A relievers, they’ve afforded themselves the benefit of playing this game however they want.

  376. adeelmd says:

this is so awesome…. strike fear into the sox (hoping montero is ok of course)

  377. BK2ATL says:

Imagine just being in the Boston dugout right now, waiting out the rain delay and watching this. Hahahaha!!!!

  378. your mom says:

Who the fuck are these idiot ESPN announcers? Talking about if Jennings took the pitch they’d be tied right now. Sure buddy. Also saying Mo might be coming in??? LOL!

  379. NHYankeesFan says:

come on JD. just for old times sake hook one over the right field stands

  380. Erica says:

Can someone tell me how to feel about all this?

  381. Jake says:

Definitely Ayala’s best game of the year.

  382. Pasqua says:

I’ll choose to believe that this is all part of the “Master Plan,” and not a scathing indictment of our middle relief corp.

    /Ignorance is bliss’d

  383. pat says:

Watching this unravel on OTM is PRICELESS

  384. TampaYankee says:

I do not want these clowns in the playoffs. I’m sick of the idiots in this area.

Lets go Yankees, shut this bandwagon down!

  385. your mom says:

    Damn it Damon! WTF?

  386. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

If anyone other than Proctor pitches the 9th…

  387. Bill says:

    Ayala is awful.

  388. JD says:

That is the only time I will ever fist pump a Longo HR against us

  389. thetruth says:

this just all seems a little too contrived for me

    • ArchStanton says:

Would’ve been a lot easier to not jump out to a 7-0 lead….. Yanks never hid that they weren’t use their best pitchers tonight.

  390. Tyrion Lannister says:

Punch that run across, Angels. Beat Texas.

  391. StanfordBen says:

Bring in Proctor in the 9th. That way either the Rays come back or we get to see the ridiculous situation of Proctor getting the save. It would be the 2nd of his career (he gave up a run in his only other save in 2006).

  392. Joe D. says:

I want Jorge Posada to pitch the ninth.

  393. Sarah says:

    Angels walk off tonight. PLEASE.

  394. Erica says:

A friend of mine (Mets fan) just posted on her Twitter:

“The yankees are gonna loose on purpose. Cause they’re just THAT douchey.”

  395. Chen Meng Wang says:

Doesn’t Micheal Kay know the cake is a lie?

  396. Monteroisdinero says:

Sam Fuld for the walkoff. Book it.

  397. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    BRING IN PROCTOR!!!!!!!!

  398. your mom says:

If Proctor pitches the 9th he’ll K the side.

  399. JT says:

wtf is corey wade warming up for… he owes it to the Rays to pitch proctor.

  400. Monteroisdinero says:

I want the Rays to win and Montero to be ok.

  401. Cy Pettitte says:

Joe is seriously gonna bring in Cory Wade for the 9th? that’s just sick.

  402. CMP says:

OTM has like 2200 posts tonight. That’s sick. The nation is in a state of mass panic.

  403. your mom says:

Ayala’s ERA is over 2.00 and rightfully so. I never understood how he kept his ERA so low in the 1st place.

  404. Reggie C. says:

i’d gladly trade a win for a healthy, ready Montero. Man … i hope the kid is ok.

  405. First Time Poster says:

    Effing Angels.

  409. thetruth says:

both these situations were created by MLB…they needed to create drama to a season that no one cared all the sudden BOTH leading wild card teams had two of the biggest collapses in baseball history. let me GUESSSSSS, they will both play elimination games tomorrow. feel like im watching the WWE

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

So your saying there was a mass conspiracy involving every team in major league baseball? Including people throwing games left and right, pitchers purposefully going into the tank, Tito, Joe, Buck, Soscia, Maddon, Phillie Manager, LaRussa, and Brave Manager all intentionally lost games at points over the past month?

      • thetruth says:

yeah kinda like MLB didnt care about steroids when everyone came back to baseball after the strike to watch Mac and Sosa chase after the record. Now all the sudden the roid users are villains…like NONE OF US KNEW all those guys were juicing…cause it made sense when Brady Fucking Anderson hit 50 homeruns one year

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

It’s two very different situations. Looking the other way is ALOT different than organizing a conspiracy on the levels you’re talking about.

          • thetruth says:

ok….crazy conspiratorial bragging rights on the fact that the braves win tonight and that sox and rays also play elimination game tomorrow

  419. jon says:

  420. Nuke LaDoosh says:

  421. Cy Pettitte says:

    Yankee killer Dan Johnson!!!!

  422. CMP says:

Fucking Girardi uses Proctor against Boston but not against Tampa.

Wade I don’t really mind too much… line drive HR (that sort of stuff happens).

      Logan looked awful….which is concerning.

  446. pop up teixeira says:

    lol@ this game

  447. CMP says:

OMG. I think I just wet myself.

  448. BK2ATL says:

And now Proctor’s in. this could not possibly get more awesome.

  450. FachoinaNYY says:

And were going to proctor… cant write this stuff any better.

  451. klemy says:

Really though, I have no idea how to react to this. I really wanted a playoff tomorrow, but blowing a 7 run lead still stings. I’m so confused! lol

  452. Justin says:

Anyone else just find themselves cheering that Dan Johnson home run, realize what they were doing, and feel kinda dirty inside?

  453. Tyrion Lannister says:

Proctor in, Joe’s had enough. LOL!

  454. Sarah says:

Btw, the Angels continue to suck. 2 out double in the 9th, and Bobby Abreu strikes out.

  503. pat says:

Someone else can hit the HR, not Upton. For some rrason I fucking hate Upton. OK you walked him. Good.

  504. Rey22 says:

Scott White Flag Proctor. Love it.

  505. Guns of the Navarone says:

Who’s left in the bullpen other than the big three? Rays need to end this now so Joe doesn’t have to go to them. I guess Noesi could give an inning…

  527. JFH says:

  535. McLovin says:

    This game is taking forever.

  536. Rey22 says:

Dammit Proctor. This was your time to suck. The longer this game goes, the more likely it is Girardi does something stupid like putting in a good reliever who they’ll need in the playoffs.

  537. Corporate Scum says:

I think Brian Cashman can see you future, and signed Scott Proctor specifically to be the last man standing in this game, just to make Sox fans wet themselves.

  574. JobaWockeeZ says:

I have no idea where the fuck this Proctor was against Boston.

  575. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

I bet if they put in Mo he could give up a run before Proctor.

  576. pat says:

This is unfucking real. He’s actually hurting the team by not giving up a run and letting them go home and sleep.

  577. radnom says:

lmao Scott Proctor. Back from the dead to once again sacrifice his arm for the Yankee cause. What did this guy ever do to Cashman? hahaha he is out there until his arm falls off or he gives up a run, whichever comes first.

  578. BK2ATL says:

    Baltimore came up big!!!

    Tampa, it’s Scott Fucking Proctor.

    Fuck the Rays.
If they can’t score off Proctor they don’t deserve to go to the postseason.

Papelbon has to the be the least likeable player in baseball.

  590. Pat D says:

I think the only appropriate thing to say about Fredi Gonzalez right now is “Now his failure is complete.”

  591. pop up teixeira says:

I guess Golson wants to end this game

  592. McLovin says:

    2 outs left in baltimore.

  593. aRX says:

The Yanks will win, the fucking Sux will back into the playoffs, and we’ll get cheated out of a game 163 AGAIN despite TWO ties on the last day.

It’s like a conspiracy to have everything shake out in the shittiest way possible.

  594. JobaWockeeZ says:

Calling it now Chavez hits a 2 run dinger and we all get pissed.

  595. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

As of now, the Yanks have used the third most pitchers (11) ever in a game by one team. 13 is the record.

  596. mbonzo says:

  597. McLovin says:

    oh shit.

  598. JobaWockeeZ says:

I guess the collapse was too good to be true.

  600. Stratman9652 says:

  609. Tyrion Lannister says:

That’s the best case scenario for us. Good job, Golson.

  610. Jesse says:

Runner at second 2 out in Baltimore.

  611. Montero's Mojo says:

What the fuck is wrong with the Yankees? It would seem to me that the greatest advantage they could possibly have is to tire both the Rays and Sox out with an extra game… Why the fuck aren’t they losing. Strike out. Swing before the ball reaches the plate, swing after the ball is caught. Just fucking lose. Damnit! This is so infuriating.

  612. McLovin says:

    come on reimold.

  613. Stratman9652 says:

Catchers who wear their helmet bill forward under their mask really piss me off for no reason. Lobaton… Salty… Larvarnway…

  614. CBean says:

Ok Tampa if you don’t end this now, you don’t deserve to win

Me and my dad were watching the O’s game. He went BERZERK when Bamdino got the game winning hit

  667. 27andCounting says:

GIVE IT UP. Please just lose already so I don’t have to see or hear about the Red Sox and that stupid green dumpster of a ballpark they play in until next year.

  668. tom says:

OK, now if the Yankees win I won’t mind.

    UnbeLIEVable day.

  669. Guns of the Navarone says:

    Bring on Detroit!

  687. Xstar7 says:

  688. Greg says:

    Best. Loss. Ever.

  689. Will (the other one) says:

And now, tonight, two new heroes enter the Sawx pantheon:

    Bucky F***ing Dent
    Dan F***ing Johnson
    Evan F***ing Longoria

Life is good. Can we get shirts?

  690. CMP says:

The only thing that could top tonight is a world series win.

My favorite part of it all is Paplebum blowing the game with 2 outs in the 9th.

    • AJ says:

In reference to the 2nd link, I will never criticize Suzyn Waldman for being a Yankee homer again.

    • aRX says:

45 out of 45 “experts” picking the Sux to win the division, at least 30 picked them to win it all…and the most disgustingly homerific article I’ve seen in ages.

What a wonderful evening. Simply fantastic :D

    • Jonathan says:

Thanks for the links. I’ll keep them in mind when I read the predictions next year. I still can’t believe the Sox managed to miss the playoffs with all that talent. Theo didn’t acquire enough pitching depth.

  691. Jerome S says:

Guys, did we just break RAB?

    • Pat D says:

Yea, I’m pretty sure we did.

    • Chen Meng Wang says:

Yeah, we did, it totally crashed. By the way OTM is the most depressing place in the world right now.

      • Will (the other one) says:

I think you may singlehandedly have saved 20 or 30 of them from jumping off ledges by giving them a target to take their rage out on instead. Good work, sir!

        • Chen Meng Wang says:

Haha, I was honestly interested to see what there answer was to both questions…maybe I should’ve waited a couple days to ask them about the article, huh?

          • Chen Meng Wang says:

they banned me lol…I guess they’re serious about the ban on site troll policy. I was apologizing for the troll too…

(The only way I can justify using Wade) was that Proctor has worked a lot lately, He had already used Ayalla, and Joe had said that Mo, Robertson, and Soriano were absolutely unavailable today…leaving Wade our best available pitcher. He’s honestly the fourth guy out of the pen behind Mo, D-Rob, and Sori.

btw I’m sorry about posting that article. That was low of me to do…like kicking some one while he’s down. I got caught up in the moment and it was very immature of me.

      • aRX says:

“DRaysBay posters, sorry, but even if you don’t mean anything by it, you’re kill-on-sight for now.”

Pardon me as I read OTM for a while.

  692. BK2ATL says:

    From Twitter

    Jon Heyman
boston’s september collapse is official. worst in baseball history. but tampa deserves credit, too. #longoria”

  693. Tom O says:

ESPN Stat: NYY, ATL and BOS all led with one out to go before blowing a lead and losing their game. One of these things is not like the others.

    • tom says:

Yeah, I realize no one wants to take anything away from the Rays, but…if this were a game the Yankees cared about winning, there’s virtually no chance they’d get close against DRob/Mo. They still had to WIN it, but Girardi left the door pretty wide open.

The other two were classic closer failures — the sort that, thanks to Mo, we’ve been largely spared for 15 years.

By the way, since I (like everyone) have been blocked off the site for 20 minutes or more, may I just say…

  694. mustang says:

Only the Sox could make the pain of 2004 disappear!!!!

    • Pat D says:

Not for me. Like the guy said in Airplane 2, those wounds run pretty deep.

And this is also why I’m not gonna gloat over the Sox’s demise. Yankees gotta take care of business. Especially since I’m sure all the experts will pick the Tigers.

  695. Total Dominication says:

I was watching both games live with my brother. Finally got into RAB servers to post. Wow, just wow.

  696. CMP says:

If I were a Red sox fan, I would be so devastated right now That i would strongly consider giving up watching baseball forever.

It’s sure great to be a Yankee fan tonight.

  697. Jon in ???JH says:

2004 was hard. For the past 7 years I’ve always secretly felt that the RS would always find some way to come back in dramatic fashion. Even in the minutes after Andino walked off, I thought maybe the Yanks would find a way to beat the Rays, causing the RS to win game 163 in even more dramatic fashion.

Tonight changes everything. Fear of Boston: extinguished.

  698. Karl Krawfid says:

One Yankee player watching Papelbon blow the game said the Yankee clubhouse “Celebrated like WE just clinched” when the O’s won

  699. Guest says:

Most epic regular season night in baseball history? Most epic regular season night in baseball history.

  700. Pat D says:

I wonder if/how the Red Sox will overreact in the offseason. Spend too much money to keep Papelbon? Spend too much to keep Ortiz? Spend too much on middle relief? Overpay for CJ Wilson or Yu Darvish or some middle of the road starter?

Why the hell am I thinking about this shit? The Yankees have 11 games to win!

  701. Darren says:

    Amazing night of baseball.

I am not happy the Yankees lost in that fashion, would rather we won, had a Game 163 tomorrow.

I have new found respect for Proctor and he looked good ( I can’t believe I’m saying that). Cant remember last time he hit 94 on the gun Maybe he will be be valuable next year? WTF am i thinking! But everything is upside down. I think i ate some LSD by accident.

  702. JScott says:

Somewhere, someone is preparing one of those “Hitler Learns Red Sox Missed Playoffs” deals…and it will be E-P-I-C.

  703. Darren says:

BTW when will they release the post-season roster?

  704. Darren says:

Food for thought: If the Rays were out of contention at the beginning of the Game, do you think Girardi would have let Proctor pitch as long as he did? Would he have put a non-pitcher in after 2 innings or so?

Imagine how crazy Red Sox Nation would have gone if it was Pena or Golson who let up the dinger to Longoria??!!!

PS – Teddy Ballgame just farted in Reyes face
