Changes To The Game Suggest Darvish Is The Right Move

I don’t know about you, but I have about a sandwich’s worth of Thanksgiving leftovers left in the fridge. They’ll probably be gone by time you read this too. It’s a damn shame I tell you, the leftovers are every bit as good as the meal. Well, not really. But they’re close if you don’t char them in the microwave. The oven is your friend, it’s worth the extra wait.

Anyway, I think all of us are still trying to enjoy the long weekend, so here’s an open thread if you do check in. There’s a ton of college football on, and all three hockey locals are playing this afternoon. You can also watch that video of Bernie Williams‘ walk-off homer in Game One of the 1996 ALCS a few dozen times. Talk about anything you like here, it’s all good.

Changes To The Game Suggest Darvish Is The Right Move

Open threads come early during the holidays!

    • Mike HC

Slackers. They went from three writers to nine and they still can’t put together some holiday content. (just joking around of course)

      • David

Well I’M not joking, how can they slack off like this when there are so many important decisions for us fans to make about the team!

Like, for example, what about all-cotton uniforms to give us an extra advantage???

  • Kenny

Uhh, this was game 1 of the 1996 ALCS, not the 1999 ALDS.

  • Mike HC

You are definitely a man who knows what he is talking about. Oven is definitely the way to go and well worth it.

    • Krazziness

Toaster Over – the king of bachelor cooking!

  • art vandelay

i remember having sterlings call on my answering machine for weeks after this game.

  • Tyrone Sharpton

Imagine an outfield of Bonds, Bell and Lofton. Sheffield as DH. Thomas as 1b, Pokey Reese at 2nd, Jeter at short. Doc Gooden on the mound. Ah mah mouth waters. Wish yanks did that, they’d have a monster team until 2005

  • Steve S.

I don’t love Jurrjens, but if the Braves really want to move him and will take a modest package in return, why not? The Braves have a ton of pitching on the way, from Beachy to Minor to Vizcaino to Teheran. Jurrjens will get a big arb bump this year, has trouble staying healthy, and moving him would open up payroll space to make other moves.

If they’ll take Nunez plus some low level guy(s) with upside (Heathcott/Williams) could the Yanks say no?

    • Dave203

If that’s all it takes, I’m all for it. I don’t want to give up much more than that though.

I think trading for any of the other guys like Danks or Cain will take loads more. I’d rather give up less for Jurrjens and just dump him next year for one of the impending FAs.

If we could get Jurrjens via trade and sign Buehrle, I’d be real happy.

    • nycsportzfan

First off Jurrjiens is a young kid still . Sometimes guys get hurt beggining of there careers. His upside is that of a Low Tier Number 1 starter! He had 31 and 34 starts his first 2full seasons in the league. Its not like hes been injury prone since day 1 and shown zero ability to not get 30plus starts Shoot hes Avereging 27starts per yr over the past 4seasons which isn’t exactly horrible for a kid whos still only 25yrs old! Oh and heres his last 4starts against the AL EAST

      Against BALT- 9inn 1hit 0er 1bb 8k
      Against TOR- 6inn 8hit 2er 2bb 3k
      Against BOS- 6.1inn 8hit 2er 1bb 6k
      Against BOS- 8inn 7hit 3er 3bb 6k

Oh and those 2games against BOSTON were in the Same week!! 2of the last 3yrs hes pitched to a SUB 3 ERA and hes still not even in his prime seasons! Dude is really good and i’d take the chance that his Injurys are behind him because his ability to flat out pitch is so darn good! He dosen’t need to strike out 10guys to win and he dosen’t need to pitch to contact He can flat out pitch and adapt I love a guy who can give up 1er in a 7inn start by striking out 10 or by just keeping guys off balance! Hes well worth the gamble of giving up a decent package in my opinion

      • Dave203

And for all these reasons, the Braves are demanding a crazy return for him.

        • Steve S.

As well they should. The market hasn’t developed yet, so until they feel like they’re running out of suitors they should keep the price as high as possible, just in case someone bites. Once FAs start going off the board and a deal is made here or there, that’s when they’ll get serious.

          • Dave203

I understand the “it doesn’t hurt to ask” concept. To me, it just wastes time since nobody in their right mind is giving them Greinke trade prospects. If they push there ridiculous offers for too long, teams will just shift towards other starters and that could screw them in the long run.

It’s still early so we’ll of course be stuck with the waiting game…

  • Grit for Brains

Hope the FA market picks up next week….Some interesting names out there for grabs even if most of em aren’t fits with the Yanks. I thought Darvish woulda been posted already but still expect that to happen. I think the Yanks should roll the dice on him b/c I think most of the guys you’d want to give big money to (thinking Hamels specifically) are quite possibly not going to make it to the market.

Happy to find out that there will be an NBA season.

  • Fernando

I really dislike the CBA draft wise and International Free agent wise. Why fix something that isn’t broken? I think Selig jumped the gun there, and may have messed up a great system

    • A-Rod’s Wingman

Well plenty of people hate it and there’s several GMs that are upset. I think there’s a good chance it gets changed.

  • FachoinaNYY

Holy crap that looked like Granderson when I first loaded the page.

    • Dave203

Well except for the fact he was walking up to the right side of the plate…

      • Esteban

Well Granderson IS a switch hitter.

  • crossfire

I was sitting in the left field bleachers. Great game!!! Hard to believe it was 15 years ago already.

Anyone out there with enough computer skills to create an add-on/extension for either firefox or chrome that would show Youtube videos/ pictures in line as well as allowing you to ignore certain users posts and show recent activity? I frequently visit another site where some users created one for each browser and it’s awesome to have.

What was your last late-night online drunken purchase?

Mine was a microwave egg cooker. The wife’s like, “WTF?”, but the joke’s on her – it works.

    • Steve H

It’s not my most recent, but this might be my all time favorite ( It was back in high school and the commercial for this was on at about 3 AM. It’s quite a WTF video.

    • Guns of the Navarone

It wasn’t online but I went to Target’s mignight madness sale at midnight after Thanksgiving and was hammered drunk. I got some bed sheets, workout clothes, a crock pot and a blue ray player with some DVDs. I shop only for me.

    • Esteban

I cook eggs in the microwave all the time. Just use a small glass bowl and they come out pretty decent.
