I would say the biggest need is to not do anything crazy. As long as there is no Soriano signing, the off-season will be a success.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

Really? Because I was about to say the best thing that Cashman could do was go crazy. Like, Texas Chainsaw Massacre crazy. But alright…

      • Plank

That would certainly be the best thing, but not the Yankees biggest need. I was responding to the narrow prompt by Mike.

  • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

    C’mon Giants…

  • Brian S.

We don’t need anything after a pitcher or two. Maybe bring back Andruw Jones as a bench piece but everything else is set. We have a full lineup at every position and a full bullpen.

  • Paul from Boston

The Yankees biggest need is a true BUIF. Jeter and A-Rod are unlikely to make it through a full season. But even then they need R&R. The BUIF could get 400 PAs.

I say Clint Barmes. He can play anywhere on the infield. He’s good for two WAR a year, with half that coming on defense. And he’ll hit LHP to the tune of .276/.331/.462 (career).

    Barmes for BUIF!

  • JobaWockeeZ

    What a Giants game.

  • Esteban

Thank you giants. Great day for NY football.

    • mbonzo

Great day for NY NJ football

  • mbonzo

The biggest need is to keep the payroll down for 2013. They’re probably gonna need an OF and another starting pitcher, which will probably add $40m to the payroll. Cashman needs to keep the payroll low.

    • Monteroisdinero

Montero, Gardner and Nova are our “best buys” for 2012. There is money to be saved there.

Not sure we will need an expensive pitcher in 2013 if we sign Darvish.

I am hoping for a career year from Swish, a crappy post season but we win it anyway and we free up millions by not resigning him to a 4-5 year deal.

      • http://www.twitter.com/steveh_mandaura Steve H.

And then replacing him with Golson?

        • Monteroisdinero

No. But not a Jayson Werthle$$ type guy/contract either. Spend the money on pitching.

          • Grit for Brains

            Kemp =/= Werth

          • JMK

Wrong. Definitely have to get Golson in there at right. Have you seen his arm? He’ll regularly throw out guys at first on would-be singles.

            • MannyGeee

and give that out right back in the bottom 1/2… not much of a stick on that Golson kid

            • Monteroisdinero

He may throw out Swisher someday on that play. Good call.

      • mbonzo

We’re looking at about $170m in 2013 once take the options on Cano and Granderson and go through arbitration. Yanks will need an outfielder, starting pitcher, and catcher. Yanks will be paying $17-$18m for an outfielder, and the same for one of the big starting pitchers. Even if they land Darvish, I doubt he dominates in his first year, and the Yanks won’t miss out on this free agent class with Burnett, Joba, and Hughes becoming free agents the following year.

  • Dave B

Biggest need is to retain A Jones (or a similar extra outfielder with pop). Not a critical need, but adding a younger version of Chavez off the bench is also important to spell AROD during the season. Maybe Nunez can get the games at 3B, but Chavez was a nice guy to have around when guys got hurt.

I would have said “re-sign Jorge” but didn’t want to get crucified.

  • Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat

I don’t know if trading Burnett can count as an offseason need, but doing that and signing Darvish and Garcia would probably be the best thing Cashman could do.

I’m debating with someone: they’re suggesting Kubel or Cuddyer will sign with the Yankees, despite not being an everyday player. I’m saying they’ll go somewhere else for full-time jobs. Thoughts?

    • JobaWockeeZ

No chance in hell for Cuddyer.

    • Sarah

I thought the Phillies were gung ho for Cuddyer? Not that interested.

      Resign Andruw Jones.

    • http://bleedingyankeeblue.com Jesse

Cuddyer will probably go to the Phillies. Pass on both.

    • Monteroisdinero

      Isn’t Kubel a Yankee/Mariano killer? Sign him.

      • MannyGeee

THIS. sign him if only to send him to Scranton as to not deal with him

      • steve (different one)

How can anyone on the Twins be a Yankee “killer”? Maybe he’s a Yankee Scraper.

        • Monteroisdinero

Anyone who has homered off Mo is a Yankee killer. All 3 of them in mlb! Lol

  • bankers hours

Sign Darvish and Garcia, I’d let Colon go. I think Nunez is just fine for the back up infielder and could even spell Swisher in right at times. He has a live bat and can run. His fielding will get better with more play and he’ll likely keep Arod fresh and give him more at bats at DH. CC Darvish Nova Aj and Garcia will be fine. I’d bat Arod 3rd and put Cano cleanup. I think Cano will be the MVP next yr. I’d start Jeter Grandy Arod Cano Tex Montero Swisher Martin and Gardy. Jones and Chavez did well as bench players and should be resigned. Need a loogy, George Sherrill and Darren Oliver are the most likely. Any other moves can be made at the trade deadline. The key to the offense will be if Arod can rebound.

    • Monteroisdinero

I like this but be ready to slide Montero to third in the order if ARod continues to get hurt/miss time/play hurt/underperform.

      • MannyGeee

5th behind Cano/Tex maybe, but hes a far cry from batting third in thas order

        • Monteroisdinero

          Ok. I will be patient.

  • http://www.twitter.com/steveh_mandaura Steve H.

If they can’t re-sign Andruw, what about Cody Ross as 4th OF?

  • Daniel Jackson

    Fu-Lin Kuo is 3B prospect

    • Troll Killer

yeah he was on the GCL roster this past season.

  • Daniel Jackson

    For the yanks

  • MannyGeee

the only true real need this team (after a rotation arm or 2) is a true 4OF/DH option. you know, like Kubul but not shitty.

not sure that guy exists in the market this season

    • Monteroisdinero

It was great that Gardy/Grandy and Swish were all healthy all season. Not expecting that again.

  • FIPster Doofus

The Walking Dead is such a shitty show.

    • https://twitter.com/TheRealJeromeS Jerome S.

      /shitstarting

      • FIPster Doofus

More like stating an opinion. It’s terrible.

    • http://yankeeanalysts.com Matt Imbrogno

      Bite your tongue.

      • FIPster Doofus

That would be a valid recommendation were I talking about Breaking Bad or another worthwhile show.

  • Jimmy McNulty

Biggest need? Alex to be Alex again, Hughes to be at least average, and AJ to be mediocre. That and a two starter, a la Darvish, and you can pencil the team in for 105 wins.

  • Jumpin’ Jack Swisher

The biggest need, other than solidifying the rotation, would be to meet the challenge of having a strong bench at the start of the season, which is something the team was able to accomplish last season, for the first time in several years, because they were able to spend a bit extra on Jones and take a scrap heap chance on Chavez. It made a world of a difference. I’d love to have Chavez back, at least but, if he retires, I would like the team to be as smart and prudent in filling those bench spots in 2012.

“Cuban center fielder Yoenis Cespedes, who defected mid-summer and expects soon to be cleared for free agency, is being billed by his agents as the hitting version of Aroldis Chapman(notes) and is seeking a contract similar to the $30 million the left-handed pitcher received in 2010, according to two sources familiar with the asking price.

The New York Yankees are particularly hot for the right-handed Cespedes,”

You guys have to see this its too funny, but very interesting.

    • Yu aint Matsuzaka

      Love the personality.

So Darvish & Yoenis Cespedes will possibly be the biggest names the yankees land this winter?

      • mustang

        Maybe.

The Ninja works in mysterious ways.

        I agree on the personality.

        • mustang

No posting fee and if they can get anywhere near Kendrys Morales type of production from him that would be a nice catch to say the least.

  • well you know

Cano’s move to the 3 spot (to cover for Tex’s weakness vs RHP) exposed the equally vexing weakness of having Tex and Swish batting back to back in the 5-6 spots, since Swish was just as bad as Tex vs RHP in 2011 (and in the ALDS). The biggest lineup need is a 5-6 hitter with a strong slash line vs RHP.

But Cashman has made clear that, despite what everyone saw in the Detroit series, he’s not going outside the organization to look for a middle-of-the-order remedy for 2012. And there’s some chance he might even deal away Montero for a SP.
