Physicals still holding up last week’s moves

Via Jon Morosi and Bob Klapisch, the Michael Pineda trade and Hiroki Kuroda signing are still not official because some of the players involved have been delayed in taking their physicals. Both Jesus Montero and Jose Campos are stuck in their home country of Venezuela at the moment, and Kuroda is still at home in Japan. It doesn’t sound like either move will be made official this week, so we wait.

They might want to take a real close look at Pineda’s birth certificate. If that’s his real name.

    • Gonzo

His real name is Lance Uppercut.

Remember when it came out that Alfonso Soriano was older than previously thought? That made the the ARod – Soriano trade that much more of a win for the Yanks.

    Failure is still an option!

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

I would troll and say that they are delaying the physicals to wait for the roids to exit their systems, but because they are in Venezuela and Japan respectively I can’t blame them for not wanting to travel for a physical

    • Rainbow Connection

That would be smart of them. Kind of sucks for Jesus to travel back during vacation just to be sent away.

  • thenamestsam

I still think it would be pretty hilarious if Cashman pulled out of this deal at the last minute as revenge for the Montero for Lee deal. Not very good business, but pretty hilarious.

Anyway, how does this work? Can you pull out of the trade any time until it is made official for any reason (although obviously you’d be burning bridges with trading partners by doing this), or can you only void a trade at the physicals stage by citing something irrefutable in the physical? Does anyone know?

    • Gonzo

That would be hilarious! I have no idea how that works out. I would imagine they have something in writing about only backing out based on the physicals.

Do the physicals include MRI’s? I would guess not, but most, if not all, ML pitchers usually have something that shows up on MRI’s.

After the arrest of Fausto Carmona today i hope they looking hard into Pineda’s info.

    • RetroRob

After the arrest of 28-year-old Fausto Carmona (now known as 31-year-old Roberto Hernandez Heredia), Mariners’ fans hope their team is looking hard at Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi’s info.

      • Mike Axisa

Montero’s bonus was adjusted downward when he signed with the Yankees because he was a few months older than expected.

        • RetroRob

Ahh, yes, and thanks, I do remember that now. I wasn’t being too serious beyond pointing out to Robert that the questioning can work both ways, not that I have any reason to question the ages of any of the players in this deal.

I wonder if this impacts the team’s ability to get the bat they want for DH (whoever that may be). Probably won’t happen, but I can see Carlos Pena choosing to sign with the Tigers rather than wait for the Yankees to finalize this deal.

    • Mattchu12

Pena isn’t going to sign with the Yankees, he isn’t going to settle for 1-2 million part time job when he can get at least twice that and be a full-time starter somewhere.

It’d be nice, but it’s not happening.

      • Reggie C.

Sure Pena wouldn’t settle for a 1-2 million part-time gig, but would he take 5 million. When the Yanks say there’s only 2 million in the budget it could be a negotiating entry stance. I’m sure if Pena was willing to sign for 5 million, Cashman would find the extra 3 million.

I think one of the RAB editors made point of this earlier today.

        • Sweet Dick Willie

but would he take 5 million.

He made $10 mil last year, and had wOBA .354, WAR 2.2 and OPS+ 123.

Why do you think he will settle for $5 mil?

If he waits until Prince signs, he will be a prime target of several teams and could very conceivably earn what he did last year, if not a little more.

Jesus: “I will not go and I shall not go! I will not go and I shall not go!”
    (arms crossed and pouting)

    •!/KChinmaster KenC

I can actually see that. Who wants to play for the Mariners?

      • Robinson Tilapia

        The salmon is awesome.

      • Chrisis

I would, sure. Get me a contract!

      • Rainbow Connection

I wouldn’t want to play for the Mariners, but I’d like to live in Seattle.
Hmmm…that’s something I should figure out how to do.

  • CJ

Cash may have his follow up deals on the table pending outcome of physicals. The bang-bang nature of Pineda-Kuroda seems like steps 1 & 2 of a game plan.

  • acash

After trade talks of santana holladay cliff lee and constant dreams of king Felix pineda doesn’t excite me as much as someone else would and I was preparing for no one and hope the yankees don’t make the playoffs so they go sign hamels and then Cain or greinke

  • Rob S.

I’m not too worried about the Kuroda deal getting finalized but I wish they would eal the deal on Pineda before somebody changes their mind.
