Game 15: Back on Track
ByFreddy Garcia owes Phil Hughes a steak dinner, because Phil’s crummy performance in the early going has drawn the attention away from Freddy’s equally crummy performance. The Chief has allowed nine runs in 10.1 IP across two starts so far, including five runs in 5.2 IP against a Twins team that has scored the third fewest runs in the league. Today he gets the Red Sox, a powerful offense despite the absence of Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford. Ivan Nova set the tone yesterday, now it’s time for Sweaty Freddy to follow suit and give the Yankees a quality performance. Here’s the starting nine…
DH Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixeira
CF Curtis Granderson
LF Andruw Jones
C Russell Martin
SS Eduardo Nunez
RHP Freddy Garcia
This afternoon’s game starts at 4:05pm ET and can be seen on FOX. Enjoy.
Bullpen Alert: The forecast calls for lots of rain on Sunday, so there’s a a pretty good chance tomorrow’s game will be postponed. Don’t be surprised if Joe Girardi uses his bullpen a little more heavily today in anticipation of that impromptu day off. In other words, we could see both Mariano Rivera and David Robertson pitch for the third straight day this afternoon

I hate Saturday afternoon FOX games against the Red Sox. It feels like we never win those games. It’s probably wrong, but it’s still annoying.
I feel like these weekend series against Boston always go…
Friday: Yanks win in blowout
Saturday on FOX: Sox win in blowout
Sunday on ESPN: Close game that could go either way
Is there a way to see the Yankees’ record in nationally televised games over the last couple years? It feels we always lose FOX/ESPN games, but I have no idea if that’s actually the case.
It really does seem like they do lose in those games!
No idea.
Nope. That’s just confirmation bias on your part.
hehe.
This is actually probably pretty darn accurate.
** Sunday on ESPN: Close game that could go either way but no matter what makes you want to take a shower afterwards
Glad to see The Experience is back in the field. I almost missed him yesterday when Jeter’s throws actually made it to first.
I can believe the red sox are about to trade for marlon Byrd
Byrd and Valentine. This should be interesting.
don’t forget Byrd and Aceves
Byrd and Bard.
That sounds like a funky 70s downtown crime fighting duo.
Nunez error poll
Third inning overthrow to first allows in two runs.
Someone please tell me they just saw what happened in the Mets game.
I wish, but what happened?
Basically Luis Castillo again.
In April, though…
Since when did Luis Castillo resign with the Mets? And when did he play SS?
Tim Mccarver: Boston apparently has the lowest team ERA in the AL
Mentally preparing for the worst today, setting expectations low for Freddy in hopes of being pleasantly surprised.
I thought for a second this would be The Experience+Raul. I got scared lol.
I was just told that there is no such grammar rule against split infinitives. Is this true?
What are split infinitives? Can you give an example?
“To boldly go” is a split infinitive. I was always told that you can never place an adverb in there. That it should always be “to go boldly.”
According to wiki, while technically against the rules, it’s really not a big deal.
Thanks, the person that told me this said no style book would ever say that. Formal education…
The rule about split infinitives came to English rather late, and it was created by professional grammarians rather than codified because it was used by a lot of people It’s basically in imitation of Latin, in which infinitives are one words. But it’s not natural to English.
Thank you, so there is no real rule on it then?
It depends on what you recognize as the appropriate authority–and who you’re trying to impress. But there is certainly a case for splitting infinitives and there are some professionals who accept them.
Thank you again!
So you’re an actual professor I take it.
No, but a professional medical editor.
If you are writing an academic paper or a formal business proposal or something similar, you shouldn’t use them, even if they sound more natural. Everywhere else, only a-holes would care.
You know the Churchill view of the split infinitive: “That is a foolishness up with which I will not put.”
Personally, I think the latter sounds better than the former.
Tell that to any Trekkie. LOL
I’m not real familiar with Doubront. I know he’s nothing special, but where would he rank, say, in our AAA rotation? Is he better, worse, or the same as guys like Phelps, Mitchell, Warren, etc.?
Good question. Anyone?
I’d say he’d rate between Brackman and Igawa last year
Heh, let’s hope so.
“Every team you’re playing is an elite team.”
“In my view, as good as the Yankees looked as a team in the first half of the game, that’s as bad as they have been now?
John Kruk might be right, Jeter might hit .400.
Bruce Bochy just lost a lot of kudos.
He had Aubrey Huff playing second base in the ninth inning. AUBREY HUFF!
Hey, he’s my lefty DH in The Show, cause I have Montero catching against righties, he’s a beast lol.
Is FOX under the assumption that Nova is starting this game?
arods beard really makes him look old
ARod’s stats against lefties make him look old too.
Mike is there any specific reason that Arod is so bad against lefties? Is this something that can be corrected?
No idea and I doubt it at this point. I guess it’s better to suck against lefties than righties.
And Ryan Sweeney just goes against everything McCarver just said and gets a double
Come on Freddy, just keep us in the game. Sweat MOAR!
most excited I think I’ve ever heard Buck.
Game 6 last year was more exciting, especially since it was his team.
I think this is his best call ever.
“Eli Manning….stays on his feet. Airs it out…it is caught by Tyree…”
Bets Super Bowl play of all time and that AGon double was more excitable apparently.
He was more excited about the pressure on Eli than Tyree’s catch.
Thought that was gone
That ball should have landed halfway up the stands. Gonzalez’s power has just disappeared since his shoulder started barking.
Good thing he took place in the Home Run derby last year. Was his shoulder barking before that or did it start right after?
Had surgery during the 2010-2011 offseason and was complaining of fatigue and soreness last September.
And it starts
can we get rid of freddy now? good god he sucks
I was downplaying the Yankees’ chances in my mind as some sort of pitiful reverse psychology but Garcia: under-promise, over-deliver only works if you over-deliver.
Why does Baby Buck dislike the Yankees so much?
Every play by play man hates the Yankees
I think it’s a New York thing.
Freddy sucks.
Sigh. Hope the Yanks brought the bats today!
Ortiz beats the shift more often then any player that I have seen. And not just against the Yankees
Phelpsitize me cap’n
Hate this guy pitching.
He sucks.
Garcia you suck.
God, I hate Freddy. Can’t wait til he’s gone.
Freddy is terriawful. So bad I had to use a fake word.
I guess I should be glad Fox is showing M’s-White Sox in my area.
Were the 2 doubles to left hit hard?
And this is why his original role was the long man. He’s league average at his absolute best.
Jeez, my heart stops for a second every time a ball is hit to Nunez. I really like this bat, especially for a utility guy, but I wish he could without me bracing for a ball in the seats.
Not to rip on him, he did make the play. Just saying that I grip the edge of my seat in situations like that.
Ever think that the Yankees cannot win when they are on Fox on Saturdays. Like the Sunday night ESPN hex.
Say that because two of those hits were sheer luck.
Can’t wait to see Phelps start against the Rangers next week. (Please Joe!)
If that game’s in Texas, it’s hard to believe they’ll let Phelps start, not toss a young guy into that lion’s den.
That is neither the time nor the place for him to make his first career start.
Not in texas
That ballpark has killed both hughes and joba. There is evil in there for young yankee pitchers.
Sorry… can’t wait to see Phelps make his first appearance in Texas in the second inning next week!
Joe Buck
Douche vs douche.
Say what you want about Jason Sudwhatever, but he bangs hot chicks.
I really do not like listening to Buck/McCarver call these Yankee Sox games.
I don’t think it’s an anti-Yankee attitude that bothers me about him. It’s that monotonous, colorless, drill-like voice. He should be announcing funerals.
Dont even waste a spot in the pen on this guy garcia dfa
At least we get RHB Tex for at bats.
So should have kept Colon.
That ball was a foot inside
..he’s not a soft tossing lefty. Why are we struggling so far?
You obviously dont remember the year in which the Yankees couldn’t hit lefties who threw changeups
That is still Tex.
How do girardi and cashman sleep at night trotting Freddy Garcia out there every 5th day?
To be fair sleeping through his meltdowns are the best way to get through them.
They slept last year.
For all those disappointed with Garcia, two “ifs”: Pineda is not hurt and Hughes was effective as a starter there would be no Garcia.
Another IF for ya, IF those two geniuses could reliaze phelps gives us a better opportunity, Freddy could just be DFA’d already.
Earn it first. Do more
Dude, its three low-leverage appearances competing against a guy who did very well last year. His chance will come, but you can’t just yank starters out of the rotation for a couple of bad starts at the beginning of the season.
This strike zone seems to be a little all over the place.
If Grandy needs a day off, who do we put in center?
Swisher I guess.
I think we’ll call up Wise at some point in the near future.
I thought Andruw..
“That great celebration here at Fenway Park”. I started laughing. The great celebration where Millar was standing on top of the dugout, wasted, shouting random things? Yeah…
I can’t believe they gave McCarver the Ford Frick award.
This ump is awful.
Luckymformusntherenis no umpire accountability so he will suck all year and make lots of money.
Seems like I chose the wrong career path.
wow… great swing.
Christ, Doubront has been in the Red Sox system for EIGHT years? I get minor league development but that seems like an eternity to reach the majors.
I don’t think that’s “development” as much as “yeah, we don’t think you can cut it, you’re officially organizational depth.”
The second and third time through the order should be fun.
For whom?
The umpire. He will really make up shit.
I’ll cheers to that.
It’s Saturday, and I have to sweat through Freddy vs. Red Sox (pun intended). Good a time as any to start drinking.
Gonna go ahead and do the same thng
I started two hours ago. Welcome to the party.
Guys which broadcasting team is worse: Buck McCarver or the effervescent Miller Morgan
I like Jon Miller calling games. And I dont know what people’s problem was with Joe Morgan. SO I would take Miller Morgan
Morgan was a horrible announcer
Buck is the worse play-by-play of the two. Morgan was the worse color guy. I’ll take the team with the better play-by-play guy.
BP
And Freddy was mad he wasn’t guaranteed a spot.
This might be game
are you the same greg that calls EVERY game in the 2nd inning?
……
…..
….
Maybe.
I laughed. Greg lit candles and played some Morrissey.
Urgh Freddy.
This One is getting out of hand early.
This is really odd… I could’ve sworn we traded AJ Burnett…
Easily bypassed MLB.tv’s national blackout so I could watch today’s game on my laptop outside. Anyone know if this will work for the playoffs as well, based on past years?
Proxy?
Yes but a good one. Can’t tell for sure, but I’m confident mlb.tv is unable to identify it as a proxy. I’m supposedly typing this from the UK.
Is it a website translating site? But it’s impressive you can get videos to work from a proxy. Should work since what 10 people probably do that.
Not sure what you mean by website translating site. I actually pay a very modest amount for access to a couple private proxy servers scattered around the world (for reasons entirely unrelated to mlb.tv). Speed is pretty good – I’m streaming now at the same quality I would on a direct connection.
I used to do it, haven’t had much luck lately.
Your mission Mr. Phelps-should Girardi decide to use you-is to keep this game close for us.
Freddy Garcia is awesome at sucking.
Phelps now please
Phelps in now please. Let’s keep it a ballgame.
I know Freddy has sucked out of the gate. However, for anybody who wants to give Phelps a chance to start, I can almost guarantee Phelps would do no better.
I’m skeptical of Phelps as a starter, but it’s hard to think he could be worse than Freddy right now.
I will gladly take that bet.
As would I.
Make it three.
See that, Phelps? Do well today.
Why’s that?
Lack of experience, average fastball, average breaking ball. All of the reasons his ceiling coming into this season were a 4-5 guy in the major leagues. 8IP out of the bullpen in garbage time do not convince me he’s going to be a great starting pitcher.
Or even a good one for that matter.
a 4-5 guy would be a huge improvement over Garcia’s performance so far this year
Probably, I’m just trying to temper expectations, people are expecting this kid to be some sort of savior after 8 innings in blow outs. That’s not fair for him, or anybody for that matter.
agreed
This.
Normally I’m on board with newbies not being as good as an average, or even somewhat below average, MLB pitcher. That said, Garcia hasn’t BEEN somewhat below average, he’s been significantly worse.
You do not need to be convinced he will be a great starting pitcher in order to assume that he’ll do better than Freddy has. That was in no way what the argument was.
Ok, poor word choice, he would do better, because Freddy has been fucking terrible. But to expect him to be anything better than slightly below average is just unfair.
I don’t really have high expectations of Phelps at all. I would still be fine with him replacing Freddy however.
If Ivan Nova’s supposed to have a ceiling of a 4-5 guy, I’ll take more 4-5 guys, please.
Done, how much?
Take out Freddy please.
Last year was an aberration. He’s got no stuff and Phelps should replace him in the rotation till Pettitte or Pineada are ready.
Pineda’s dead.
*lurks*
Cesar, you’re more dead than Pineda gtfo.
Even Stairs sees the irony of your screen name saying that.
RIP Gimp Foot and Shoulder Wang
I’m a zombie, as far as I know, I’m pitching again. You on the other hand…
20 throws to first, be quick out there phelps.
Freddy Garcia, hate to say it, but this flat out isn’t going to cut it. I’m very grateful for how good he was last year, but it’s a new year and a what have you done for me lately town and this is unacceptably bad so far. If the news on Pineda is bad, I could see the Yankees actually trying to make a trade for a starter (Brandon McCarthy?)
No trade. Phelps, DJ Mitchell first.
There is NO need for a trade. Not with our minor league depth.
The Swisha cannon!
Another by product of developing quality starting pitching
And this game is over
Dude, it’s the second inning.
so you can leave now??? please?
I shouldn’t say the game IS over because that was stupid. I apologize.
But it doesn’t look good.
Hopelessly drift in the eyes of the ghost again down on my knees and my hands in the air again….
(I realize no one gets this joke)
Cano is a great defender but he doesn’t know how to apply those tags
If at first the breaking ball doesn’t work…keep doing it cause the fastball sucks too.
Banish Freddy somewhere else. Holy crap, he has been less than useless this year.
Too early to say that we signed the wrong reclamation project with how Bart has pitched in the early going?
Considering Freddy’s SIERA was nearing the 4.50s no it’s not early to say that he’s bad.
Is that a joke? His ERA is almost 10.
Last year I meant.
I’d say Cashman f’ed up that decision royally.
I think he chose Freddy because Colon struggled at the end of the year and Freddy didn’t.
And concerning Bart’s stats, he is pitching in a cavern of a ballpark in Oakland
I’d say neither guy would matter in the long run.
Maybe not but in the short run Freddy is killing us.
He potentially lost the team three games. It’s not fun to watch, and I want him to go away as well, but it’s not “killing” anyone.
Didn’t they win Freddy’s first start?
This is why you run the site and I don’t.
Well he got us 5 outs, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!?!
Gotta go to our 2nd inning guy.
Hahaha that’s no way to keep your rotation spot, Freddy. Repeatedly punching Pineda in the shoulder while he sleeps on the other hand…
It will be insane if Freddy is still in the rotation after this start. There are other options.
Like a pitching machine.
I realize that you don’t want to burn the pen, but what the fuck did Joe see that permitted Garcia to pitch the second? Because AGon and Ortiz didn’t go yard? Down 5-0 and NOW he is removed!
Mind boggling
Fire Cashman.
Send him to chicago with his buddy Theo.
5 runs? Yankees got this.
Rapada to the rotation!
Hooray for Andy Pettitte’s change of heart.
Better chance of happening? Freddy making his next start in 5 days? Or a cake making it out intact after being locked in a room with Rosie O’Donnel?
@BloggingBombers
Former Yankee alert: The Diamondbacks have recalled Jonathan Albaladejo. And no, I don’t miss spelling his name.
good to see him get another shot in the big leagues
Nice guy-hope he sticks and does well.
Freddy throws a great BP. Wrong to sign him. Wrong to not trade him before season. Impossible to trade him now. Can’t start him. Release him and waste $4m. Nice.
Its the Yankees. They dont care about 4 million. Even if they are trying to lower their budget.
Sort of correct. I’d say they care about 4 million, but they’d eat it if they had to.
I left to get a snack how the hell is there 2 outs already?
Dont leave to go get snacks. Yanks dont like that
When you leave to get snacks the Yankees record quick outs
When the Yankees record quick out the produce quick innings
When they produce quick innings they dont score runs
Don’t leave to get snacks during Yankee games
Time for Freddy to go join A.J. in Pittsburgh.
I hate you John Sterling.
Lemme guess led u to think it was out? Only 30 feet or so short, that dude sucks at calling a game with all his missed home run calls.
Off the bat it sounded like he was going to hit the Red Seat out in the bleachers, then all of a sudden it was caught by Ross before the triangle.
And that’s the last start Freddy Garcia will make as a Yankee. Phelps will take over for now. God forbid we had kept Colon who throws 38 straight strikes and can actually miss bats.
Again remember the end of last year. Colon struggled mightily. That’s why he’s not here
“and can actually miss bats”
Garcia had a higher swinging strike % than Colon last year, and going into today’s start this year
just saying
Garcia looks like he should consider an analyst position at this point. I can’t remember a non-injury situation with a starter at the beginning of the season where I couldn’t even squint and reach for a positive.
Drop Freddy, Phelps to rotation, Mitchell to bullpen, and Warren to the 40 man? Time to see what you’ve got.
Agree all the way around.
no reason to add Warren to the 40-man until he gets promoted
True.
Yankees can’t even shift right.
The Yankees really suck at shifting
Not exactly. Ortiz beats the shift more often than any player I have ever seen. And not just against the Yankees
But they can bunt better than any other team
At least we got the horrible LOOGY out of the game early.
What, exactly, was the point of using Rapada for 0.1+ innings
To get a lefty out. He can’t even do that and he has a 1.000 OPS against righties and Phelps is ready.
Phelps needed time to warm up, plus the lefties. No problem with the move.
Girardi for some reason likes to use a “normal” reliever to finish the inning and bring in the long man the following inning.
Not sure if this is a warmup time issue or just another weird idiosyncrasy of Girardi
Not sure why he wouldn’t leave in Rapada to face Ortiz then bring in Phelps though. Why not see what Rapada can do in game situations againts tough lefties?
Oops he did leave Rapada in… trying to follow on line as Fox s showing the glorious M’s White Sox matchup in may area.
And again about Colon: Gigantic ball park in Oakland. AL West offenses, where only the Rangers are excelling
He hit Youk. I approve
This is ugly! Not happening today.
It’s Fenway, the Wild West of baseball, anything can still happen, especially if they get into the Sox bullpen.
Ya normally you would be correct. Not today. 7-0 and only two hits. Hope for a win tomorrow night.
Crazy how it worked out.
Who wanted David Phelps to start again?
?_?
I still do
Can’t be any worse than Freddy has been
Still think that?
yes
Where are all the fallacy of the predetermined outcome arguments you use to defend Girardi?
Huh? If he hadn’t given up the two runs, I still would have disagreed with him. That has nothing to do with fallacy. I now have more evidence to prove my point
what is your point?
Freddy very clearly sucks right now
Phelps may or may not be better (it would be very difficult for him to be any worse)
Since Freddy won’t be long for the rotation anyways, why not see what Phelps can do
Hector Noesi. And he pitches in a big ballpark.
wtf are you talking about???
because Noesi has struggled so far, there is no chance that Phelps can outperform Garcia and his 9.75 ERA
Are you being serious or just straight trollin?
Yes.
not making judgements based on one inning
entirely possible Phelps will fail, but may as well see what he’s got, he may actually have a future with the Yankees, Freddy does not
His worst crimes so far have been a hit batsman and a single. Go take a Zoloft.
There really is a lot of crap in that Red Sox lineup.
What the hell was that relay? Is this Williamport?
As good as Grandy is, he has no arm.
Yikes, what an awful throw.
Oh look, David Phelps is giving up runs to a good lineup. I guess you can’t always face the Angels.
That’s what I’m saying
didn’t Freddy just get his ass kicked by the same team??
Why is Freddy still a better option?
because Phelps may not be good either??
may as well find out
So you would run Freddy out for his next start and keep Phelps in the pen?
Second-ballot HOF as a Yankee now, Axisa?
He still look pretty good. Not sure why the fact that some people are getting over-excited about it means you react by blaming his good performance on the opponent.
Really trying to figure out why I’m still watching this.
You hope the Yanks will chip away and make it interesting. But 90% unlikely.
And this, my friends, is why Mr. Eppley is in the bullpen right now.
And just like last year, we’ll probably get Boston out of their slump. Whatever.
Boston got swept immediately after beating the Yankees for their first wins of the season last year. They’ll wake up because their schedule is a cake walk for the next month.
But you what the media will say…
Wow really? Shows how selective my memory is. Only joking anyway. Team’s too good to keep playing like they have.
Wow I thought I was having a bad day when I spend 2 hours with my kid at a Chuck E. Cheese’s birthday party while the Sox and Yankees played. Garcia sucks again and Pineda setback btw the comments in that thread were right down ugly any other good news?
I’m going to back to Chuck E. Cheese’s.
I remember when Chuck E Cheese was full of actual videogames which you could basically play for free for two hours. That was actually fun.
Now? I pray I don’t get invited to many of them once my kid begins to actually make friends.
Dude it was horrible from the food to the staff working there avoid it at all cost!!!
Is it true Garcia couldnt get a FB above 86 this afternoon?
I just turned on the game. Doubront … seriously???
Does he every throw harder than 86? I didn’t think that was unusual.
How does a guy who cant throw harder than 86 get $4 million guaranteed …
Hey man, a 50 year old got 1.1 million guaranteed.
His salary was 8 million in 2010!
He’s still getting hitters out to some degree though.
And Garcia wasn’t last season?
I’m talking about here and now. I’m not saying Moyer could do it in the AL East, hell he probably couldn’t. I’m just saying so far Moyer has definitely been earning his money more than Freddy.
I thought we were talking about the merits of the contract? If that’s the case, using hindsight is a bit silly, no? Did he deserve the contract AT THE TIME?
True, but that wasn’t the point. Reggie asked how could a guy who just throws 86 get 4 mil. guaranteed. If a near 50 year old can get 1 million, then the guy who Reggie refered to can get 4 million.
I was just pointing out that its not absued as some people think
Yankees are getting pounded, My gameboy died, and today has probably been the slowest day since I started at this tobacco shop. Can we just fast forward till ten o’clock tonight?
You could always ask your mom for another Gameboy.
Haha, my mom hasn’t bought me anything in about a decade.
Walked right into that one, dude.
…and lord knows there’s not a whole lot else to talk about…
I know, but shit video games are a great way to kill time. and yeah…there is zero to talk about.
I will say that Skylanders Cloud Patrol is the greatest IPhone game ever.
I had 6-foot rat dancing at a Birthday party and people wonder why 3 kids started to cry and run away.
Now you know how Freddy Garcia feels.
I’m just proud that my son stood his ground although he did have a concern look on his face.
This is a great game thread for us to just say “screw it” and talk about the kids. Mine’s been napping for over an hour now.
Mine doesn’t nap much anymore he just likes to put water into the living room lamps and try to shave his eyebrows off with my wife’s leg shaver. Lets just say he has been spending lots of time in his room in the last 24 hours.
LOL
They are not making King Felix Doubront work at all. Girardi should just pull all the starters now. I hate games like this especially against the Red Sox.
He’s at 60 pitches already.
YOU! CODY EPPERLY! GO PLAY RIGHTFIELD!
That Robertson kid has a wicked throwing arm from shortstop.
“Pull all the starters”? What is this, football? September? I mean, maybe the umps let Joe G catch the rest of the game for novelty’s sake. And maybe Eppley and Wade can field a little. Hell, Mo can play for Granderson. Ibanez in for Swish, but then we kinda run out of bodies.
You should totally be manager.
Tex you just kill me
I think Mike already proved the switch hitting thing as the cause of slow starts to be wrong seeing as every other switch hitter doesn’t have epic fails in April like Tex.
The guy just raked for a week and after one day and two at-bats people are already getting on him. Sheesh.
A week doesn’t really change Teix’s terrible April stats in his career.
He is to inconsistent. Either feast or famine.
Problem is when he is not hitting he looks far worse than when he is hitting. Almost an auto out.
The plan is clearly to get Mark Melancon out from wherever he’s hiding and pound him into submission.
I thought they sent him down?
Isn’t he in AAA?
Better think of a plan B.
Well, we know where he’s hiding, then.
/didntreadthepapertoday’d
The empire state Yankees can get him.
Don’t worry, things will get better when Andy and Pineda return.
I don’t know if you heard the news, Pineda is for all intents and purposes gone for the foreseeable future.
Pineda will be out for the year. Odds say he has a rotator cuff tear.
Usually when they do an MR arthrogram, they’re looking for a labral or capsular tear which would be far worse than a rotator cuff tear.
They already did an MRI that showed no structural damage, so I would say the odds are almost completely against his rotator cuff being torn.
The Athenian odds? Not touching those.
What odds are those?
Odds that this Greek gentleman came up with just now.
you guys are tooo pessimistic.
Cashman doesn’t make mistakes. He didn’t trade the best hitting prospect in 17 years for nothing.
Watch, once again, Cash will be right.
You’re just making that up. Or being as pessimistic as possible in order to be pleasantly surprised.
I hope I am wrong but I think Pineda came in with the injury and it got worse during spring. He will require surgery and be out for the year.
Are you stupid? THEY DID HIM AN MRI BEFORE he arrived with the team, otherwise the trade wouldn’t go through.
Girardi throwing underhand to the trolls there with the mid-inning interview.
Girardi lying through his teeth to that fool Joe Buck
Girardi on replacing Garcia in the rotation: “We haven’t even talked about that.”
Oh Joe, you liar.
Is it true that Pineda is out for the year? Because people are starting to say that on here.
Still would have done the trade despite that.
It’s not been said he is out for the year, but he felt “weakness” in the back of his shoulder after one inning yesterday in ExtST, and has been shut down indefinitely. It’s the Hughes thing from last year all over again.
People were picking out Robertson’s casket after he slipped down some steps. You’re surprised there are people saying Pineda’s done for the year?
While I feel that some people are over reacting Mike, I think you are drastically under reacting. I don’t think we see him till around the All Star Break. That’s just my humble opinion, from the outside with no more (probably much less) information than you have.
We’re not going to see him until the break, at least. Maybe sooner if they get lucky. The point is that everyone rushes to the extreme and assumes the worst.
I mean, while that’s not “the worst case scenario,” it’s certainly not best case, and I think people should be concerned. Especially with the slow starts of Freddy and Phillip.
Maybe it’s too obvious of a decision that they don’t need to talk about it.
Phelps reminds me a lot of a poor mans Mike Mussina.
That’s funny you say that because I was about to post that from certain angles, Phelps looks like Moose to me
Yankees medical staff should be let go after this season.
Wang, Hughes, Joba, Kennedy, Aceves (and not seeing that he was alright) and now Pineda
That’s crazy talk. Every team is plagued by injuries to pitchers.
Yes. But not that many in a short amount of time.
I accept there are injuries, but not that many.
Meanwhile, Texas is letting their young starters throw 120 pitches and I haven’t heard a peep about their injuries
That just spanned about 5-6 years.
Let’s also throw Steve Karsay in there for shits and giggles.
Karsay was a) a health wreck before he signed with the Yankees, and b) Torre’d. He was doomed to get hurt.
You listed five injuries over a five season span.
5 MAJOR injuries over a 5 year span. I’m not sure but all of them (except Pineda’s cause we are still waiting) were season ending.
Didn’t Ian Kennedy have a friggin aneurysm? Aceves had a bad back, for god’s sake.
Yeah, and Jon Lester had cancer
Also Wang got hurt rounding a base in an inter league blowout by the yankees. Shame to see that.
Pitching in general is a bitch to the team.
I hate to break it to you, but every team deals with pitcher injuries.
I know, but again that many major injuries in 5 years?
I accept their are injuries but the amount is ridiculous.
Especially when limited to young pitchers.
You listed five. One pitching injury a year is actually a really good rate. I’d sign up for that in a heartbeat.
But again, I;m not talking about any old injury. I’m talking about nmajor season ending injuries.
And I’m just limiting it to the young pitchers.
So am I. Are you familiar with young pitchers? They get hurt all the time. For no apparently reason too, they just get hurt. Young pitchers get hurt and they walk people, it’s what they do best.
Tampa Bay? Texas?
Let’s see, Tampa destroyed Scott Kazmir and Davis/Niemann have been on the DL a combined five times over the last two years.
Tommy Hunter, Mason Tobin both got seriously hurt for Texas just last year. That doesn’t include Neftali Feliz’s DL trip and mysterious decline, particularly against RHB.
Kazmir I’ll give you because that effectively ended his career.
It’s not the injuries themselves, mind you, its the number of them. That seems like too many.
Plus the Aceves thing doesnt give me much faith in them
Scott Kazmir says hi.
How did the medical staff do anything wrong with Wang, Kennedy and Hughes?
The injury might be luck, but dealing with it afterwards is another story.
Again, I’d like to see evidence that the medical staff handled any of those injuries improperly.
Well the worst was the Aceves injury.
lol, moron
the front office and/or medical staff clearly misjudged Aceves
That’s one mistake
for that, clearly “Yankees medical staff should be let go after this season.”
For all you know, Cashman might not have wanted Aceves around anymore after his motorbike accident.
No! Name one other team, I dare you. That’s right, you can’t. It’s just the Yankees.
That’s just downright McNultyish.
You’re better off as the goth, tortured soul character always claiming the team is doomed during…..the pre-game show.
You’re not only correct here on both counts, I burst out laughed for a good ten seconds.
Well played, sirrah.
What contest did Nate Spears win? Pinch hit for your favorite Red Sox?
My dog died after seeing that shot of Bobby Valentine smiling.
Mine didn’t die, he just immediately had a bowel movement on the rug.
I too would be smiling by finally seeing a semi-talented lineup finally take advantage of that wall.
How dare Jones smile with the Yankees down 7-0.
Fire him immediately.
He has a negative grittiness factor.
A -GF?! that’s simply unacceptable.
By definition, no one from Curaçao can ever have a +GF.
Can we make this a legit fake stat? somebody like Brett Gardner obviously has a +15GF and just make it up from there?
He should be cutting himself in the arm right there on the field.
They’re playing getaway day baseball on a Saturday.
Well, just checking in here. Looks like a good day for me to be dealing with the FOX blackout in Chicago. As you were.
Oh wow look a clicker………..jesus.
Can we just refer to Tim McCarver as Grampa Simpson from here on out?
Did hear right that the pitching coach’s name in that clicker story was “Dick Pole”??
So lets say Pineda’s shutdown is again attributed to simple soreness. Lets say Yanks are just being overcautious with their potentially prized starter and instead of giving Pineda regular throwing schedules, the shutdown is the way the FO has decided to go by it.
When does Pineda come back?
Its got to be by the End of May? I cant imagine Pineda not returning before then if the hurt is structural.
They’ve said the MRI came back negative the first time around. They’re sending him for a “dye-contrast MRI” I’m not a medical professional, so I have no idea what that means but one can assume that it’s a more exstensive test. So I guess we’ll have more info after that. This all via the Daily News 5th with Mark.
Yup. Its for checking for smaller, or at least more subtle (see: much much worse), damage and apparently does better picking out specific kinds of damage.
Wow this just a FUCK UP DAY!!!!!
Jeez, that was crushed.
Pedroia looks like he should be in a homeless shelter somewhere.
I blame Garcia.
He just re-activates opposing lineups. Brings ‘em back to life.
Freddy the Reanimator Garcia.
All I;m saying is that the number of major injuries to all of the Yankees young starter in a short amount of relative time is insane to me.
Not the fact that they occurred but the number of them
How would you like to be a Cubs fan and lose 2 phenoms like Prior and Wood at the same time?
We essentially lost three, maybe 4 if you include Wang
Wang was the only one in my opinion that went above prospect status, Prior and Wood were both doing it in the Majors before being hurt. Hughes and Joba came nowhere near close to Prior or Wood’s level, even before getting hurt.
How would you like to be a Cubs fan and lose 2 phenoms like Prior and Wood at the same time?
Not sure thats the example you want to go with there, given that the general consensus is that a mis-managment of their workload at a very young age contributed to those injuries.
Phillip Umber is 7&2/3rds innings and perfect, I’m gonna listen, see if I can get some history.
Does it still count against a AAA team like Seattle?
8 full innings.
Yeah Teixeira hit a homer and has mashed for a week now, but what has he done for me since he rounded the bases?!?
But it was just stat padding.
Garbage timed
Not a damn thing, that bastard!
He could have at least got me a drink from my fridge.
Nice job Yanks of making Doubront look like an ace. I look forward to Peter Gammons telling us he’s a better bet going forward than Pineda or Strasburg.
FOX better change over to the Seattle game. Stupid blackouts.
Wow, Gordon Beckham has really underwhelmed…I remember when he was supposed to be the next big thing from the White Sox.
The Chicago announcers were constantly comparing him to a young Derek Jeter when he started out well that first year.
Sure Hawk and Stone are idiot homers, but even for them that was beyond absurd.
Sort of like Montero being compared to a young Miguel Cabrera? Or Hughes being a young Clemens? I’m so used to hometown guys pumping up their prospects like that, it doesn’t bother me anymore.
Live feed of the Seattle game: http://www.mlb.com/video/play......756772-996
Nice to,see Montero bust it down the line on that ground ball.
The Humber Games ™
Full of Win.
Humber is an example why the Yankees shouldn’t give up on Hughes yet.
God damnit Chicago Offense. I want Perfect Game, not situational hitting and scoring insurance run.
Remember when people were crying about the Yankees losing to Phillip Humber last year? This guy’s good.
Rain out tomorrow? When was CC’s last good start at Fenway?
Padilla was brought in to hit someone.
Had to leave for awhile can someone summarize the game for me? 9-1 really?
Garcia got lit up over the first 2. Phelps came back to earth a little bit 3-5th, and our offense has done nothing.
In other news, Umber is one out away from perfection in Seattle.
Umber’s two away, for anybody not watching.
Switched over to that game. This is intense. One left.
He’s one strike away.
Holy shit, full count.
Shit doesn’t get more real.
That was certainly dramatic…..I’d really like to see a replay of that swing from the 1B angle.
Down to one strike!
Two away
Yeah Humber. Mets fans feel a little pain with yet another ex Met throwing no hitter while they still have none.
HE DID IT
Phil Umber just pitched the 20th perfect game in regular season history. 23rd all time.
21st.
I blame the Chicago broadcaster, he said 20th
22nd I’m counting the Gallaraga game…dumb call or not that was a perfect game
Then you shouldn’t count this one, cause there is no way he went around.
He so did not swing at that, but good work Humber.
There’s no way Ryan swung, but this is awesome.
Not a shot in hell. He definitely held up in time, who cares though.
I’m I the only one who sorta cares? He shouldn’t have the perfect game. Its one thing to get a blown call early in the game – thats just the luck of the draw. But this call felt influenced by the moment, and yeah that sort of bugs me.
It bugged me too but the White Sox got screwed by one perfect game so the ump evened it out.
You shouldn’t watch baseball. It’s a sport full of terrible calls on a regular basis.
Way to not respond to what I actually said and instead imply that I claimed to be bothered anytime an umpire blows a call.
Who cares? It’s BS history now. That’s embarrassing.
The ump looks like he just pulled a reverse Jim Joyce.
I thought the same exact thing…that was ridiculous
And yes, in that situation, the pitcher will get that call every time, except Milt Pappas
If any team deserved a gift for a perfect game it’s the White Sox.
Holy fuck Nick Swisher hit a grand slam. It’s 9-5
(Sees a couple of frogs dropping from the sky. Laughs nervously. Considers sacrificing a fresh tofu.)
I thought he went around…..but I’d like to see that 1st base angle too.
Congrats to Humber!
BY the way, a grand slam by Nick Swisher has the Yankees within 4
Holey Shit, what’ happening over here? We’re making a comeback?!?!?!?!
Holy*
Yankees start playing well as soon as Fox switches to the other game
Coincidence???????
I think not
I still haven’t seen a grand slam live for this team in the past couple years.
Me neither
I was working last season during the game we hit three in a single game.
Was at that time… to my everlasting shame we left just before the first slam was hit. My (at the time) 1.5 year old was not having fun and it was drizzling all day. Listened to the rest of that game on the radio… insanity.
Was at that *game*, not time.
Hey Mke , should I drop Matt Latos or Justin Masterson and pick up Humber on my fantasy team?
No and no.
No way.
If you can some how retroactively put him on your roster yes.
This might not help us today, but it might help us tomorrow, making Boston waste pitchers
This could still help them today. Tying run on deck in the 7th in Fenway. Game is still in reach.
That takes Garcia off the hook.
Again with the fallacy.
No it actually does on that stat sheet
does what??
he’s still in line for the loss unless the Yanks at least tie the game
Yeah that’s what i thought.
in what way??
I feel bad for Ryan, but every single time, in the history of baseball..if you even think about going around and you’re the last out of a perfect game you’re going to be rung up.
lol at the montage of Mariners swinging at pitches 12 inches out of the strike zone.
Now that it’s back it’ll be a GIDP
Yeah no kidding.
Fox missed this turning into a game!
Tell me again how swish aint good enough to be a yankee.
It was a garbage time grand slam.
OH MY god.
HOLY SHIT
Holy crap!!
UNBELIEVABLE!
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!
HOLLYYY FUNKCING SHITEET
Nice.
Tex!!!!!!
Humber very humble but a Text message is more exciting!!!!!!!
HOLY SHIT TEEEEEEEEEEEEEXXXXX!!!!!
Oh my lord. That just fucking happened. That just happened. Tex just hit a HR from the left side. Oh my god.
MT25 set to crush!
omfg this is amazing
So, that Swish guy only hits in garbage time. And Teixeira as a lefty? God Awful. amirite?
Holy shit Tex went the opposite way with power.
Something else that’s only happened 20 previous times in MLB history.
Forget the score. Tex just hit an opposite field homer as a lefty.
I laughed.
I guess he read your analysis of him Mike.
TEX!!!!!! TEX!!!!! TEX!!!!
Holy shit!!!
Had to stop by to say WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tex goes opposite field after a week of Axisa analysis.
YCPB!!
OK, I knew Boston’s bullpen sucked.
I didn’t quite know it SUUUUUUUU-CCCCCC-KKKKK-ED!
If the Yankees come back and win this by less than 4 runs, does it count as a win on Fox since they didn’t show the grand slam?
If they pull this off, Bobby Valentine’s not getting out of the park alive.
If the Yankees win, the only thing that could make it better is if Bobby V collapses in the dugout clutching his chest.
Who pitches for the Yanks if there still down 1 run?
So with Bard in the rotation, Bailey on the DL and Papsmear in Philly who exactly should I be scared of in the Boston bullpen?
Steal, Curtis!
See i am good luck
The comments over at Overthemonster could revive a dead Yankee fan.
They’re worse ledge jumpers than we are.
Waaaaaaaaaaaay worse. I can’t wait to go read them later tonight.
DO IT ANDRUW!
please
The Red Sox bullpen sucks despite the fact everyone throws like 95.
You can throw it 101, if it doesn’t have movement, or if you have no secondary pitch, major league hitters are going to sit on a zone and wait.
Grandy was out.
Ooh, I think he was out there.
Tough shit.
Grandyman was out.
Fucking umps always screw over the Yanks!!!
did McCarver really just call Andruw Jones Alex Rodriguez??
Yes. I for one applaud Fox for employing a stroke victim.
Lol
I don’t even think it’s the first time today.
So went to pick up my daughter from dance what’s been going on?
Philip Umber pitched a “perfect game”
Swish hit a grandslam
Tex hit a three run oppo-bomb from the left side.
I have a car radio I was kidding Susan and John were keeping me updated in their special way. I had to wait about 5 minutes to make sure Tex’s HR was actually a HR because God knows my steering wheel can’t take another beating. Plus my kids were in the car I couldn’t express my love for John’s HR calls or the lack of.
Thank you
LOL
The GRandyman was out, but who cares…
Aceves warming up, I hope his shitty FIP catches up with him now.
Andru Jones just got summoned to Kangaroo Court!
I hope they bat around again and Andruw Jones makes all three outs of the inning.
Has that ever happened?
http://www.wezen-ball.com/2010.....nning.html
Happened in the minors: http://joyofsox.blogspot.com/2.....n-one.html
This game is basically the opposite of a perfect game!
Especially with Rafael ‘The Human Frown’ Soriano in the game.
Odds Soriano gives up at least a run here…
Against the bottom of the order.
Soriano is a bigger waste than Freddy Garcia.
Rafael Soriano never lets the Yankees have anything nice.
Everytime he does something negatively Cashman looks at Levine and says, see. that’s why I don’t trust you with the checkbook.
The comeback was over as soon as Joe sent Soriano in there. That guy just doesn’t have it. Promote Wade.
I’d take Wade Phillips over Soriano.
I’d take Wilson Phillips over Soriano, even the fat one.
MFIKY
It’s a miracle! Nunez caught and threw a ball!
I half expected that throw to land in the first row.
NICE!!!!!
Well…
Thank you Soriano, you now can go to Levine’s office, he wants to give you 4 years and 60M…
LMAO!!!!
Good job working around the leadoff double at least
Soriano got the job done. Right now, that’s all that’s important.
come on guys offense!!!!!!!!
MFIKY!!
For a millisecond there I thought you said, “MELKY!!”
Soriano could be good guys. The guy is competing for another shot at getting overpaid as a closer or becoming Mo’s successor. Who knows but I’m not going to badmouth him just yet. He hasn’t really killed us this season. He’s got 1 meltdown.
Nunez making nice, controlled throws from short. He has a great arm when accurate.
Do John and Suzyn ever go against an umpire on a call that doesn’t hurt the Yankees?
Nunez will get picked off.
N/M
The Experience should be running.
I’m starting to think Nunez’s bat may not just be an aberration. Too bad he can’t field.
But you have to admit, that bat (if its anywhere near this good) means its worth making absolutely SURE he can’t field.
odds of a TOOTBLAN coming up now?
TOOTBLAN?
http://www.urbandictionary.com.....m=TOOTBLAN
I’m referring to Nunez’ baserunning
Nunez still has a better UZR than Jeter doesn’t he? He’s got a good bat and could be Cano-lite.
Not at all. His errors at the very least negates whatever range advantage he brings.
Jeter’s going to bunt, I can feel it in me bones.
I really hope he doesn’t
Thankfully that feeling is wrong
He’s going to Aceves now
Aceves, huh? Let’s do it!
who else is in that Sox bullpen besides Aceves now?
Thomas, Atchison, Tazawa. This is all Aceves now.
Nunez to steal? Get picked off? Get thrown out stealing? Jeter bunt? Hit and run? Whaddya think?
I think he should steal, he’ll get in safely, and then Jeter can decide if he’s not going to get a good pitch to hit, bunt him to third where hopefully Granderson can make some contact and tie this shit up.
Granderson is not Swisher
I give Aceves a 60% chance of blowing this save.
Jeter needs to work a 2-0 count and then bunt. If we do get the tie it’s a good thing Joe didn’t use Robertson and Mariano yesterday in a 4 run game.
yup Drob unavailable today….freakin re-tardi…
I am worried about Nunez getting picked off. Mick Kelleher-it is on you!
Let him steal before the bunt please…
Anyone noticed how nobody was looking at Valentine, heck, A. Gonzales turned his back and didn’t even move to make room, or show a path, when he aproached. Amazing, 2 weeks into the season and he already broke the clubhouse.
Who pitches the ninth for the Sawx? Is Valentine gonna try to get 6 outs with Aceves?
Yes
How bout a little Bucky Dent from Jeter.
He is not BUNT !!!!!
BUNTING
Jesus, I just set the spray chart on gameday to show all balls hit in play this game…it looks like a cluster fuck of blue and red bubbles.
Maybe Aceves will tire himself out throwing to first.
A walk to Jeter would be excellent.
Now u hit n run.
Aceves getting squeezed. phelps did too.
95 for Aceves? Gun is juiced.
Looks legit. He’s added velocity this year.
Are you sure it’s the gun? If their broadcasters are going to make unfounded accusations about our players, let’s do the same lol.
No GameDay says the same. Maybe it’s because of extra rest but apparently it’s been going on all year,
I meant about what’s juiced lol.
maybe he is juiced
Since when does Aceves throw 96?
Since his back got healthy, I guess.
Aceves throws 95 MPH? I don’t remember that.
He started right after getting some vitamins from Ortiz…
Sorry to post something non-Yankees related but this is too good:
https://p.twimg.com/ArChDuDCQAAzr1R.jpg
Dude, we stopped talking about this game for a while to talk about that game.
Nice AB
Joe just can’t help himself. He will instruct Swisher to bunt after he just hit a grand slam.
No he’s not it looks like
great AB Jetes
Yeah, that was fantastic.
The Swishman.
A walk to Swisher here would be beyond excellent.
damn missed a meatball
I hear a lets go Yankees chant out there
I love how Yankee fans travel.
Meanwhile, A.J. Burnett just walked the first batter he faced as a Pirate on four pitches.
GARBAGE TIME
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THEY’VE TAKEN THE LEAD! SWISH!!!!!!!
Garbage fucking time!!!!
This!!!
GArbage Time!!!
Swish! oh my fucking god we are wining
YES! YES!
Yessssssss
YAAAAAAAHFKFOPIJYYGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GARBAGE FREAKING TIME
Holy Shit!
Yea let’s trade Swisher’s dead beat ass
#sarcasm
Swish!!!
Hell YES!!!!!!
On a related note, the Red Sox bullpen is AWESOME.
YEESSSS!!!
THIER FAILURE IS NOW COMPLETE !!!
WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
THANK GOD HE DIDNT BUNT!!!!
lolskies
I just pooped my pants. Holy Swishalicious.
Sawx pen = LOL
Why would you walk someone here? ?
The only problem I have with this game is I’m not DVRing it, and it’s on Fox so there’s no Encore tonight.
So who pitches the 8th?
maybe they tack some more on and they can let Wade and Logan finish it
McCarver >>> Valentine.
The Nick Swisher Garbage Time meme is dead.
We’ll take the baserunner, thank you Bobby V. Let’s get another one in. We don’t have Robertson thanks to Joe.
You’re rrrrreeeeeealllly determined to bring some negative into this game aren’t you? You’ve been picking through nits trying to find one.
Boston’s bullpen totally doesn’t need Bard.
And on top of that Bobby V is about to look a bit smarter or even dumber.
You can almost hear the hurt in mccarver and bucks voices
Swishalishous
Man, if this game was on YES it would be on Yankee Classics 20 times this year.
They can still get fox games, they just use the radio audio over it.
Thanks for walking Cano with no one out Bobby V. Seriously.
Valentine apparently borrowed Girardi’s binder on IBB.
Regardless of what ARod does that seems like a dumb move.
Damn. Swisher’s got RBI fever this April.
Come on A-Rod make them pay!!
The plan is to go to Logan because 3 of next 4 batters are lefties. If he gets in trouble, go to Mo
Glad to see Teix and Swish on fire.
Yes. Please let Tazawa make an appearance in this game.
Are those “Yankee suck” chants?
Suzyn with the line of the year “Nobody’s going to get up (in the pen) until there’s an out Mariano has taught them all to warm up in 7 pitches.” I don’t know why but I found it hysterical.
Valentine’s face always reminds me of a clown face.
He looks a little like the Joker from Batman.
There was a game Yanks Vs Sux back in the late 80′s where Yanks fell behind by I think by 11 (IIRC) Vs Clemens in his prime and they came back and won.
Yeah, but all that scoring happened early. They put the 9-spot up in the first and, by the second, we’d scored 11. This may be sweeter.
Oh yes !
Sox also tied that game up before we won it in extras. This is WAY better.
Joe Buck sounds so pissed the Yankees game back. It sounds like he is gritting his teeth describing what has happened. I love it.
Yes, I did miss the entire comeback while taking my kid for a walk.
Best comeback since the 11-spot on Clemens in ’87 or so?
LET’S DO THIS.
I missed it too. I was watching the Devils game, figured this was over. Wow.
this.is.amazing.
STERLING!!(Imagine me yelling this much like the Professor from Futurama shouting Wurntsrom!!)
cant wait to see what the win probability chart after the game will look like
no need to wait
http://www.fangraphs.com/livew.....eason=2012
Source: FanGraphs
It’s like a cliff face. It’s beautiful.
This is just perfect.
“You ever seen one do that before.”
-Chief Brody (Jaws)
LOL, will Valentine intentionally walk Teixera with no outs? What an idiot!
This whole inning is just full of GOOD fucking AB’s
MT25!
TWO MORE!
Well I’m taking everything bad I’ve said about Tex.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT STOP LAUGHING RIGHT NOW
Tear of happiness running down my face.
LOLpen.
Holy shit. I wasn’t watching most of this game but holy shit.
this is the most amazing game
keep on handing out the IBBs lmfao.
LOL! Bobby V putting another free runner on base! Jesus.
Axisa, you obviously fixed Tex… Do it with Martin now!
Yes. Agreed. Make Martin a .330 hitter with 30 HR power. Do it. DO IT!
It was not Axisa, is the Sawx Bullpen…
Dat Bobby V.
Seriously going to intentionally walk the bases loaded with no out….
Jones, the ball wants to land on Landsdowne Street. Make it happen.
Wow. I remember watching that 87 game down 9-0. Winfield smoked a liner over the centerfield wall if memory serves me correct.
I hope someone uploads this. I want to watch it again.
And meanwhile, A.J. loaded the bases and got out of it. I really am rooting for the guy.
Anyone want Aceves back now?
The embedded Yankee served them well again.
Booby V’s hair will turn black soon
Nick is elated. Cool.
This is great!!! Love this comeback and even more so at Fenway!!! Tex and Swisher have joined the party. Phelps needs to stick around at the MLB level. Nunez is a great piece to have on the team. Good times, guys!!!
Phelps doesn’t get much love here at RAB but I hope he moves into the rotation soon.
I stopped watching after the fourth inning. I watched a Daily Show, had dinner, came back online and checked the scores on Fangraphs, just to see how bad it was.
Then I started crying.
Are you not entertained??!
Where the heck have you been?
Did exactly the same thing. Daily Show and then came back. I smiled
Fuck you Valentine.
I’m gonna enjoy reading OTM tonight.
this.
I read a bit. It’s not even funny anymore, they’re so pissed.
OMG at the teenage girl that just got in Bobby V’s face.
damn Ibanez crushed that. oh well.
Wow
Russ Mart! he’s fixed!
This is just nuuuts!!!
This is insane
YOU GET A RUN! YOU GET A RUN! YOU GET A RUN!
In other circumstances, that DP would have bugged me. Now I think it’s just kind of cute.
You almost feel like the Yankees spotted the Sox that, so they could prove they could pummel them in spite of it.
LMAO!
yes russs!!!
Pour it on, baby. I want Bobby V. to come out and make another pitching change.
got your wish
Hooray offense!
Martin is fixed
LOL! Martin crushing the ball now. Stupid Valentine.
If Russell continues to hit, that lineup is going to be unreal.
Just when I think this can’t get any better, hello Russell Martin.
This is turning into a very good day.
Nunie! so fucking epic. I can’t believe this.
You do all realize that every paper on the East Coast will feature this as their headline tomorrow morning.
“Perfection followed by Imperfection!”
Wow Bobby V is going to get killed out there.
LOL
Any chance they bring back Francona? This reminds me of when the Lakers let Phil Jackson go only to come crawling back to him.
Or Jay Leno. That kind of thing.
Is Fox spazzing out every few minutes for anyone else? Or is it my shitty Brighthouse. This is getting really annoying, it keeps stuttering picture and sound and I keep missing things.
Gotta feel a little bad for Bobby
I’m absolutely amazed the fans are hanging around. Actually, maybe they are sticking around to give it to Bobby et al
Feel bad my ass. They should storm the field and lynch that SOB.
No you don’t.
I bet Bobby Valentine REALLY hates the Yankees now.
Mabye Bobby V shouldn’t of pulled the starter after a nothing HR?
Just maybe
Going from getting drunk to drown sorrows to getting drunk in celebration mode is in f’n credible.
I feel real bad for Ibanez. That was so unlucky, if that hadn’t happened this game might be 20-9 by the end of the inning. But maybe it will be anyway!
Tito is watchin this with a bucket of chicken and beer and loving every minute of it
He’s got the game tomorrow. Its gonna be fantastic.
So what are the odds that Bobby V. is fired and actually replaced by Tito?
That would require both sides to agree and there is no way Tito would accept anything from this organization after the way he was dismissed
Yeah, he’s said multiple times how hurt he felt after that whole ordeal. He said the only reason he came to the ceremony yesterday was to thank the fans for their support, and that he probably wasn’t even going to stay for the game.
I understand, but if the fans keep the pressure on about it, can they actually change his mind despite ownership?
… well, not despite ownership, but if ownership actually wants him back and pays him very handsomely, could his mind be changed?
LOL AVILES.
This just keeps getting better.
“If you ask scouts who will be better for the next six years between Sabathia and Tazwa, all scouts pick Tazwa”
#Someofthecrazythingsgammonshassaid
I hope that’s just you joking around.
AHHAHAHAHHA YEESSSS
HA! HA!
Look. Even Greg is happy.
ahahahahha oh my god too perfect
Oh, this is just sad.
EL OH FUCKING EL
LMAO !!!!!!
God is having a real good time.
LOL
Me too!
yup that Scutaro trade was worth it
LOL! It’s a comedy of errors. This Red Sox team is one of the worst in years. Francona got out just at the right time.
18 of the last 21 Yankees have reached base.
Thanks, Aviles.
Sawx getting a real buttfucking now
And they gave Jeter the hit too
So, even the three outs in the inning came on well-struck balls.
I left in the fifth inning, haunted by the image of a grinning Bobby Valentine. I come back now; this is glorious.
Over the Monster is going to be so hilarious tonight.
Their server will probably commit suicide.
We have an overunder pool at work on Valentine’s firing for July 1st. I took the under, looking pretty good right now.
On a slight side note . . . It seemed that Felix pitched well, did he not? I may be the only one, but I don’t exactly buy that Bard and especially Doubrant (sp?) will be all that bad.
You’re not allowed to be objective here.
Too early to tell, just like it is for everyone. I must say, Bard looked very good last start for the first 85 pitches. I think he’ll work out.
Doubrant….eh. Yeah, he looked good against us, and thats nice, but I have no faith there yet. We’ll see.
God I wish I were in Boston. I probably would have had 8 fights by now, but it would worth it.
Figures after all the Saturdays I’ve set aside just to end up watching them lose, they pull this off the one week when I have a prior engagement that I can’t get out of. And I missed a perfect game, too…*sigh* Oh well, at least I got home in time to see them take the lead :/ Guess this game has been kinda crazy, huh?
A bit. I watched the whole thing except where Fox cut out. Loving it.
This is amazing. And it’s CC v Bard tomorrow.
Don’t get too excited. CC’s been bad so far. He’s been bad since last year.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was obviously BV’s fault AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Screw the sawx!!!
In all seriousness, i really really think that Aviles is the Worst SS in the league, i have no statistical proof or anything, it just feels that way.
There is a man. He has a name. And his name, is Yuneski Betencourt.
I thought Betencourt was considered an above average defensive shortstop, then again I stopped caring about him since he left the Mariners or got traded or whatever.
Not by the numbers. He was one of those guys who made great plays but had no range.
Kind of like Nunez? Makes the flashy play, but not the routine ones?
I recall a post by a Royals blogger after Betancourt got traded to the Royals. The blogger called him historically bad. He said children would one day sing campfire songs about how bad a shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt was.
Oh, I meant overall. I just know he’s below average on D and horrrrrrrrible on offense. He’s considered the worst player in baseball by many.
I know he is bad, and Joe Posnanski (or something) keeps making fun of him, but this Aviles is right there with him (as the worst SS)
I think I called this comeback kinda.
You wanna talk about a LOLpen…
Ha yeah. I loved how Bobby V got booed every time he made a pitching change.
Which, while I feel no sympathy for him, what can he do? That pen is like playing Russian roulette with a bullet in any chamber.
Pedroia can’t even hit a LOOGY.
Mike… if the score holds, for the wrap up you should just post the win expectancy chart for the summary and say “That is all you need to know”
yup, self explanatory
I honestly can’t do this game justice. Friday and Saturday nights are usually my nights to take it easy and just bullet point the recap, but I’m probably going to do something like you suggested.
Amazing comeback. Even more amazing that the comeback was big enough to (potentially) spare the high end bullpen arms. Just awesome. Really, that’s the only word for it: awesome.
The Yankees I have on my fantasy team: 1/8 (Granderson and ARod).
Ha! I also have A-Rod, but I also have Swisher, so it’s all good tonight!
Lol been there…nothing worse than looking at the boxscore and seeing banner days for every journeyman, backup and scrub, all except your guys.
I’ve also been in trade talks to acquire Teixeira. I have a feeling he’ll become unavailable now.
I’d like to propose the end of the garbage time meme. Can the Swisher haters just back off now?
Toss the garbage meme in the garbage?
What exactly is the garbage time meme, btw? I looked up and saw 3 pages worth, but I always seem to catch these RAB memes after the fact.
There is a vocal faction here on RAB who seems to believe that Swisher can only get hits during “garbage time” situations. Meaning, he stat pads in blowout games.
Which is complete bullshit, as we have witnessed here today.
A whole lot of memes, hopefully, died tonight.
It’s not a “meme”, per se, but rather some ridiculous notion that Swisher only hits when it’s inconsequential, usually late in the game. It’s also wedded to “Nick is a choker” in the playoffs and close games.
See “what people used to say about A-Rod” for similar statements.
Heh, yes, that is indeed what I am proposing.
The best thing would be for Swisher to come in and pitch a perfect ninth inning!
Yankees bullpen > Sox bullpen.
Yankees>Sox there I fixed that for you.
The looks on the Red Sox fans in the background
PRICELESSSSS!!!!
Indeed. I love every second of it.
They’re so drunk, they don’t even know what’s happening.
Plus, their heads are buried in chicken wings.
Aviles had a -6.1 UZR in just 91 games last year and -4.3 in 110 games in 2010 so while he may not be THE worst defensive shortstop in the league, he’s certainly in the conversation.
He may be bad with the glove but those are really small sample sizes you’re citing.
ahahahaaahahahhahahahhahahhahahahhahahahahhahahhahahahhahah
Fox is openly discussing if Valentine will resign — during a live game.
oh, man.
It was kind of funny last night when Cone said something like:
“Well, the one thing Girardi has done right during his tenure is bullpen management.”
Kind of uncomfortable.
I’m enjoying Swisher’s walk year.will he be a “type A” free agent?
CBA made it irrelevant I think.
I thought there are still Type A’s, they just eliminated Type B’s and made A’s more exclusive. I could be wrong though.
They can offer him a 1 year qualifying contract under the new rules (last year I think it would have been ~12.5mil) and if he walks the team gets a pick (not sure if it is both a first rounder and a sandwich pick or just a sandwich pick).
The new CBA did away with compensation picks from other teams and a simple arbitration offer and replaced it with a requirement of a 1 year qualifying offer.
The new CBA got rid of Type-As (and Type-Bs).
This will the greatest moment of the season….until they win the WS, that is.
I second this statement.
Had to step out for a bit after the 4th inning. Have I missed much?
When was the last time the Yankees won an April series at Fenway?
2008 I think. Cause we were terrible against them in 09 and 10, and got off to a very slow start against them last year.
Cliff Lee was just placed on DL.
Maybe shouldn’t have pitched 10 innings?
In other news, the Pirates have a pitcher who just came off the DL and is off to a nice start today.
Yikes. Hopefully nothing long term. At least it’s April, plenty of time to heal.
Just my luck. Every April, no matter who I draft, I end up with half my pitching staff on the DL…
Fire the entire Phillies medical staff.
Aceves just doesn’t lose games.
It’s funny, I might not have returned to the TV if it weren’t for the perfect game.
@PeteAbe Red Sox had a cop and 3 security guards at the dugout when Valentine came back from the mound.
Guy’s going to need to leave the ballpark in a disguise today. I don’t recommend fake glasses and a mustache, though – that’s not going to fool anybody.
FENWAY FAVORITES???
TODAY!!!!!
It was nice of the yankees to wait for the perfect game out of respect before going off in historic fashion.
How much does anyone want to bet that ESPN bury this game?
I mean it will like the 10th thing they talk about after 2 or 3 commercials breaks.
By ESPN i mean Sportcenter.
No way. They’ll hype this so much, they love dramatic Yankees/Sox games.
Especially with them having the Sunday night game if it doesn’t rain out.
Your on.
It IS just one game in April.
I find it funny that Tim McCarver can mess up even the safest guesses: “Cody Eppley first time at Fenway”
that’s HOF broadcaster Time McCarver
And multi-platinum recording artist* Tim McCarver.
(*God, I hope that’s not true)
Good thing Girardi didn’t take that one commenter’s advice and pull all the regulars in the fourth.
So, where are all the people concerned that we aren’t scoring enough runs to keep pace with the Bostons of the world
Boston won’t be “that team” this year. It’ll be the Rangers, or maybe the Tigers.
Many of us Yankees fans have Napoleon complexes about the idea of another team hitting on par with the Yankees.
I’ve noticed that since I’ve become an active Yankee fan online, on the old Facebook group I used to belong to, here, and Lohud. If another offense is even close to on par with us, some fans get their panties in a bunch.
So how is Cano not shifted further for Ortiz? It looked like he was playing in his normal location just backed up 15-20 feet
For all the shifting Girardi now likes to do, how does he get the Ortiz shift wrong?
It’s Cano’s fault. He’s a statue in the shift.
OMG WHO IS THAT GUY PLAYING 1ST??? HE CAN HIT TOO!!
LEARN HOW TO DO IT GONZALEZ!!!!
Mo signing Baseballs during the game lol
Yankees- 5 relievers 7.1 inningz
Red Sox- 6 relievers 3 innings
I would love nothing more to see a Nationals vs. Yankees World Series. I’ve always liked the Nationals for some reason and I absolutely adore their ballpark. It’s very relaxing, and with a few of the monuments in the background. I love it. Great venue. Let’s make it happen.
You guys made this game even more enjoyable then it was.
THANK YOU.
Comebacks. Kids fighting off giant rats. It was a big day in mustangville.
LOL.
Yes Sir it was.
Oh, wow this was a fun fucking game
Best comeback against the Sox I’ve ever seen. Leaves ’87 versus Clemens in the dust. Amazing job by the offense.
The Sox sink like the Titanic and it’s almost enough to make you feel sorry for them.
Sweep tomorrow.
BY the way, the Sox have traded Michael Bowden and a prospect for Marlon Byrd.
now time for the YES Postgame
me too and quick pitch tomorrow morning
Wow! Just caught the final. Fuck me!
What do the Athenian odds have to say now?
That it is 3am and my lady friend is coming over. Odds are good….ps my earlier odds were onPineda being out.
This is why you never leave a game early or turn a game off
While I agree. See above comment.
Nunez is an awesome addition to this team. He’s a great offensive player with blinding speed and will field better the more he’s used. Great addition to the team.
Nice to see this comment. I like Nunez alot too-through all the frustration.
A few years ago, I was hoping AAA Nova, Nunez, Montero and Golson would all be making big contributions for us. 2 for 4.
Hoping CC can step on Boston’s neck tomorrow and keep them on their downward spiral.
Around 5:30, I posted “It’s Fenway, the Wild West of baseball, anything can still happen, especially if they get into the Sox bullpen.” (In fact, I didn’t believe it.) Then we went to a concert, to hear my daughter, and my grandson (12) asked what the Yankees’ score was: 9-0, I said. He then went through a scenario of high-scoring Yankee innings, culminating in a win. I laughed, said, “Well, we’ll see,” and came home. Turned on the scores and was stunned. Do you believe in magic? Me do.
your grandson is obviously the chosen one…please have him use his powers (1998 dominance please)
