The Mitchells dominate in a pair of wins

By

Baseball America has a boatload of minor league transactions, and unsurprisingly, Tim Norton has been placed on the 60-day DL. VP of Baseball Ops Mark Newman recently said Norton was “throwing bullpens and feeling fine,” but this is not the first time he’s given an injury update that was … well let’s call it optimistic.

Also, Dewayne Wise was activated off the temporarily inactive list. He missed a few days because his wife was having a baby. Cole Garner was placed on what I assume is the phantom DL in a corresponding move.

Triple-A Empire State (10-0 win over Syracuse) they faced John Lannan and really roughed him up (5 R in 2 IP)
SS Doug Bernier: 1-5, 2 R, 1 BB
CF Chris Dickerson: 3-5, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K — having a nice little start to the season
1B Steve Pearce: 2-5, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB
DH Jack Cust: 4-4, 1 R, 4 RBI, 1 BB — where’s the power man?
3B Brandon Laird: 2-6, 2 R, 2 RBI — last three hits have been doubles
RF Colin Curtis: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1 K
2B Kevin Russo: 2-5, 1 R
C Craig Tatum: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB — season debut
LF Ray Kruml: 0-4, 1 BB
RHP D.J. Mitchell: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 6/3 GB/FB — 38 of 61 pitches were strikes (62.3%) … excellent season debut … he would have gone longer had he been stretched out to 100+ pitches in camp
RHP Manny Delcarmen: 2 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1 HB, 1/3 GB/FB — 22 of 35 pitches were strikes (62.9%) … back to the bullpen after the one spot start (on Opening Day)
RHP Jason Bulger: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1/3 GB/FB — only 15 of 35 pitches were strikes (42.9%)

Low-A Charleston (1-0 win over Rome)
CF Mason Williams: 1-4, 1 SB
SS Cito Culver: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K — still hitless this year (12 PA)
3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 2-4 — has hit in every game so far, but they’re all singles
DH Gary Sanchez: 0-4, 1 K
LF Ben Gamel: 0-3, 1 R — reached on an error
RF Kelvin DeLeon: 0-3, 1 K — no Tyler Austin after he left yesterday’s game in the fourth inning
1B Casey Stevenson: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 K
2B Anderson Feliz: 0-3, 1 RBI — drove in Gamel for the game’s only run with a ground out
C Francisco Arcia: 0-2, 1 BB
RHP Bryan Mitchell: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 4/5 GB/FB — dominant, I expect many more games like this
LHP Fred Lewis: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 0/1 GB/FB
RHP Zach Varce: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2/0 GB/FB
RHP Pedro Guerra: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 0/1 GB/FB

Both Double-A Trenton and High-A Tampa had a scheduled off-days.

Damn, how good is this Low-A team going to be this season?

    • Plank

The team will be split up at some point this season with players getting promoted to Tampa. I’ll enjoy it while it lasts, though.

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

Me too. My vacation this summer is 4 games in Charleston followed by 3 in Asheville last week of May. Hoping no promos before then. BTW total cost of tickets for 7 games ~ $90. Love MiLB !!

  • Joe

Why do you think they placed Garner on Phantom DL instead of Kruml,Baker or Mujica?

  • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com/ Steve S.

John Lannan-“I don’t want to be here, so I’m just going to pitch like crap until they trade me or release me.”

    “OPERATION SHUTDOWN, BABY!”

    • pat

I’ve said this a coupe times in the past but it bears repeating. I was very good friends with Lannan in high school, until he pulled some gutless sh*t and tried to steal this girl I was dating. Hated him ever since. Yea I’m definitely losing because he’s a millionaire, but I still hope he never pitches in the majors again.

      • Manny’s BanWagon

He’s a below league average shitty back of the rotation starter who can only pitch in the NL so I wouldn’t feel too bad.

Don’t know why some people were up in arms over his demotion since he has all of 5 WAR over 128 starts and 4 full seasons.

      • STONE COLD Austin Romine

Wait south shore long island has shady dudes that live there or come from there ?

        That’s a revelation

        .News at 11.

After the way Lannan pitched yesterday your hopes may come true. He was awful.

  • MP

The return of DotF has made dealing with the early losses at least a little easier.

  • Derrick

Love Mitchell, the only other pitchers with stuff as good as his are betances, campos and perhaps depuala. If he finally gets command he will be a top 10 prospect when he gets to AA.

  • mustang

    “but they’re all singles”

19 years old, aggressively promoted, proving most scouts wrong and still Dante can’t get any love.

Its ok Dante much love go get them baby!

  • BigGuy

The official name of the AAA team is still Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Rochester GM came up with the Empire St idea to help promote ticket sales since 37 of their so called home games will be played their. All MILB stats and standings will still be under SWB. As a season ticket holder since they moved to SWB in 07 I can tell you we aren’t very happy about this name change down here at SWB.

    • Plank

Do you think attendance would be higher if they changed their name back to Red Barons? What’s the sentiment there? Why did attendance fall? Because of the park?

      • Monterowasdinero

When are they beginning renovations on PNC stadium? Drove by last week and looked like nothing has started.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

It was was supposed to start April 1st., apparently.

        • BigGuy

The counties just gave approval to start renovations the other day. As usual the counties screwed around wasting a month of March that they could have been working on the place. They were trying to hold it up to get new ownership first, but that could take awhile. They were pretty much forced to give the go ahead now or the place wouldn’t be even finished for the start of next year.

      • BigGuy

Season ticket holders voted for the Yankees as the nickname back in 07. It was a big promotional deal at the time. The ugly stadium and ownership that doesn’t give any incentives whatsoever are the cause for the attendance decline. No promotions. Too much politics between the 2 counties involved. They’re looking to sell the team for 14 mil if anybody has some extra cash stashed away. lol The counties just gave the go ahead to start contruction after wasting a gorgeous month of March.

RAB needs to update Mason William’s Stats in the side bar. He’s batting .273. I believe that first AB (Triple) needs to be removed from that first suspended game.

    • Plank

Why should it be removed? They are going to resume the game and the triple counts.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The triple will count, but won’t be on his official record until that game is completed in May. I’m leaving it on there because it’s already happened in reality. I’ve done the same thing in the past.

  • Plank

By the way, I read somewhere that the directive from the Yankees for teams to change their names from The Yankees was false. I read it from one of the minor league beat writers. I’ll try to find it.

    • Plank

      http://blogs.thetimes-tribune......more-12261

      Here it is.

“Some reports indicated Brian Cashman informed the affiliates that they could not use the Yankees nickname any longer. That was not a correct report, though.”

  • http://none Bernard

Great starts for Campos, Sanchez, Bichette, Bryan Mitchell and Nik Turley. O.K. starts for Mason Williams and J.R. Murphy. Bad starts for Banuelos, Jose Ramirez and Ramon Flores. Not sure about Brett Marshall. Last year he was listed as 6-0 tall, this year 5-11. He seems a bit on the small [short] side to be a legitimate starter in the bigs. Maybe he can relieve if he makes it at all. Not sold on him one bit. Low strikeout totals from the beginning.

    • Rose from Lost

Bernard, it’s you! Bern, Bernie Burn!

  • Monterowasdinero

And in a battle of #5 hitters, Brandon gets 2 hits while Bryce goes 0-4.
