Game 45: The Left Coast
ByIt’s only a handful of games a year, but these late West Coast games are the worst. I’ve lived in out west before, I much prefer Yankees games starting at 4pm out there than 10pm here. First world problems, eh? Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
DH Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin
RHP Ivan Nova
Tonight’s game starts a little after 10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.
Ivan Nova News: Apparently Nova was dealing with a “minor hamstring” problem at some point recently, a separate issue from the right foot contusion and right ankle sprain he suffered two starts ago against the Orioles. He’s fine though and will make tonight’s start.

And these are games the Yankee pitchers should dominate. This is a weak offense and a pitcher’s ballpark. Nova needs to get back on track tonight.
How the fuck am I going to stay awake for this game?
The same way you have for every game over here since you’ve been a Yanks fan?
I have fallen asleep during many west coast games.
My strategy? A few cups of coffee followed by plenty of booze.
I’ve already got the booze under my belt.
I have to admit though, I end up asleep by the 9th inning/the post game, then wake up at 2 am on my couch still drunk and tasked with brushing my teeth and taking my contacts out. Not fun. But I don’t mind the games otherwise.
Bah. Lightweights.
Of course, I’m an insomniac, So what do I know?
Aww. How cute… And lonely.
Heh. You’re one to talk.
Yes. I am talking. Perceptive.
Buh dum pisshhhhhh…..
You’re supposed to be more annoying to have that handle. Lame jokes remain lame.
Good to see Tex back up in the middle of the lineup.
RAB late night! Let’s do this boys.
RAB after-hours.
Fuck, yeah!
RiSP!
Why is Tex batting 5th against a righty?
Because he was an elite hitter five years ago.
Girardi wanted to break up all the R/Ls in the lineup because Oakland has 4 (!!!) LHPs in the ‘pen.
So he couldn’t just swap Swisher and Tex? Not all that hard.
Also at most there will be 2 lefties together (Cano/Ibanez) if he just moved Tex down to 7.
“So he couldn’t just swap Swisher and Tex? Not all that hard.”
Tex last 2 weeks: .348 wOBA
Swish last 2 weeks: .195 wOBA
that, and the lefty thing, probably played into the decision
Right, doesn’t look like I’ll be getting a feed until Tampa/BoSox ends.
I shall play some more Witcher 2.
Dude, GREAT game. I played it twice already.
Yeah, this is my third playthrough. I bought it on release, beat it, played it again when they released Version 2.0, and am now playing it again now that the Enhanced Edition is out.
Its not as earth shattering an improved as the Witcher 1′s EE was, but they basically remade the game for that one. Its still a great improvement though. Especially considering its totally free.
I’m assuming you’re playing on the PC. I never had a PC that could run it, so I’ve been playing on the xbox since the EE was released for it. So much fun though. It’s kind of like a cross between Fable and Dragon Age with more focus on real time combat decisions and a darker backstory.
PC all the way and always. Mods alone make PC gaming worth it.
But yeah, its universe is muccccch darker. The books are fantastic as well and W1, while quirky, was a very very good game.
Unfortunately I never got to play the first game. But my PC is maaaaad old and I have a Mac now, so that’s that for computer gaming haha. I should look into the books though, I really like the backstory.
The Last Wish is the first collection of short stories he wrote for Geralt. Its out in English.
Blood of Elves is the first novel, and the only one of them yet translated into English.
Sweet, I’ll look into that, thanks.
By the way….the first Witcher is out for MAC these days. You may want to look into whether or not yours can run it. It isn’t a super hardware intensive game if you turn the settings down. Just a thought.
Never heard of it, but I’ve been so wrapped up in Skyrim I haven’t needed another game since November.
Also a great game, but I got bored after about 100 hours. Great world, great atmosphere, but still mehh gameplay. Witcher has much tigher gameplay, I’m sure you’d like it.
Did it release on PlayStation? Cause I’m a Sony fan boy, I’ll never own another system lol
Actually I don’t know. I’m an xbox guy. I was a PS guy back in the day until my PS2 just decided to shit the bed…I was so mad I bought an xbox instead, and I never looked back.
It has not and may not. They’re trying to shoehorn the game into the PS3′s hardware but it hasn’t worked so far.
At least that’s the rumor. I love that company and follow news on them.
Things like this make me wish I had a PC that could support games.
Yeah, I love me some PC gaming.
I’m afraid of what I would become if I could also add gaming to the lists of things that prevent me from ever leaving the computer screen.
That is a valid concern.
Yeah, W2 has far better gameplay. And while I do enjoy the lore of TES, its started to jump the shark in some big ways. Mods have always allowed me to greatly enjoy games from Bethesda though, even though I usually find them empty and underwhelming (not to mention bug-ridden) on release.
I’m not going to lie, up until this most recent update the game was incredibly buggy on playstation. However, since that update I haven’t found a single bug, and while I wish there were more enemies out in the open world (instead of just in dungeons and caves and what not) The Dragon battles in Skyrim are just epic.
Skyrim was awesome. No denying that. I hear they are making a TES MMO though…thoughts on that?
They bastardized the lore all to Hell to make it work. They’re also trying to shoehorn a single player element into it, a model that no one has yet made work well in an MMO.
I’m not a huge fan of MMO’s I’d much rather pay for a game once, and do everything the game has to offer than pay monthly for a game that is basically the same thing only involves me cooperating with some of the worst people on the planet, as well as people who take gaming WAY to seriously.
I like the concept of them, but I haven’t enjoyed one since Star Wars Galaxies.
I hear the new Star Wars MMO is incredible…again I wish I had a computer to support it, I’m enough of a Star Wars nerd that I’d put my hatred of MMOs aside to play it.
I know, I feel the same way, SWG was the bomb back in the day. But I have a Mac now, so I can’t play the new Star Wars MMO. My Mac destroys PCs in every way except gaming, but it sucks sometimes knowing I can’t play certain games.
Its quite good. I haven’t played many MMOs, but its the most fun I’ve ever had in one of those games.
I’m waiting for the price to drop, since loading Bethesda games up with all the mods I need to to make them any fun for me is a ton of work to pay 60 bucks for the honor of doing.
That said, I’m pretty pumped to snag it in a sale. Especially now that the 1.6 patch will be adding in mounted combat, a feature everyone has wanted since Oblivion first came out.
Holy shit!! There’s mounted combat?!?!?! I didn’t even look into what the patch covered besides kill shots for archers as well as just a smoother everything.
Its the Beta Patch that’s out right now for PCs. The next update you get for your PS3 should have it, it just needs to go official.
OMG!!! I’m so excited!!! I cannot wait to ride old Shadowmere into battle and shoot the shit out of people before they even see me!
You need to watch this.
Large foul territory.
/Football stadium’d
RISP-fail, late night style…
lmao
Friggin mlb package. Pittsburgh game ended dammit! Put my Yankees on!!!
I really wish tex could hit the ball the way that granderson did with that single.
Reasons I love west coast games: 1. I’m an Insomniac. 2. Every job I’ve had since the age of 16, save one season, I worked during games and was relegated to radio listening.
Welcome to the world of television.
Even the guys that run Gitmo think that Bob Lorenz doing west coast games is f#cking cruel.
I really hate Reddick’s stupid face.
It will be a bitch and a half for New York to get that third goal tonight.
This is vintage Marty right now. I fear he’s not allowing another goal until the Final.
Well, the benches cleared in the Rays-Sox game after they hit Luke Scott.
I may be one of a few people on here that actually likes Luke Scott.
Yeah I’m watching that game too.
Is Lou Pineilla managing the Rays tonight?
You like Luke Scott?
Very much. Unless he’s playing the Yankees.
I love Luke Scott. He publicly called Fenway a shit-hole. He’ll forever be A-OK in my book.
Nova needs to make more pitches like that. Even the one he allowed the hit to Weeks, not bad, it just found a hole.
Red Sox drill Luke Scott… again. Benches empty.
2 out, noone on first pitch fastball thrown behind him. Another pitch later in the AB in, and then finally drilled.
Does it still count as a Tex pop-up if it wouldn’t have been a pop-up in any other stadium?
A pop up is a pop up.
Red Sox are scumbags. They always hit guys and then they act like everyone is out to get them. Scumbag ownership and scumbag players.
Why’d they drill Scott anyway? Just cause he called Fenway a terrible park?
Probably. I wouldn’t put it past Valentine to continue to play up to that shitbag fanbase.
Probably. Sox are assholes. And I don’t say that cause I’m a Yankees fan, they just really are.
Pedroia was hit earlier in the game. That + his comments on Fenway makes him the designated retaliatory guy.
A week ago when Gonzalez got hit he was also drilled in that game in retaliation.
Can’t believe after 3 inside pitches (2 clearly thrown at him), the pitcher didn’t get tossed.
So the RISPfail is making it’s fancy west coast trip.
RISP fail flies first class.
Quick, someone jinx the RISPfail!
Too late
There is so much foul territory at this place.
FB count, he got the FB with little movement right down the middle and couldnt do anything but pop out.. how long can they keep carrying Martin’s dead weight?
My guess, the rest of the season. Doesn’t seem like the Brass ever removes a “starting” player for poor play, especially a catcher. He’ll be weighing down the end of that lineup come October.
If we had a better alternative, you might be on to something. But we don’t, nor is one readily available as far as I know.
not like they have a better alternative right now
OVERTIME AT THE ROCK!
Go devils!! (I really don’t care.)
+1
For both the “go Devils” and the “I really don’t care” comments.
Nice pitch!
Oh, btw…guess who no longer has any skin left on his right palm? I’ll give you a hint: He has two thumbs and puts his hands out to break his fall.
Yeah I saw your pic…did you tear off all the dead skin?
Oh, no I fell on it again, exact same spot.
Jeez dude that sucks. What’s your address, I’m sending you some wrist guards and leather gloves lol
Mmm, didn’t take you as the kinky type…
I didn’t take you as a Tro…*checks user name*
nevermind.
Haha, right after I fell I was washing it thinking to myself…this is what I get for not having it covered two days after ripping it open…
That’ll happen. This is why I snowboard. If I fall, it only hurts if I fuck up real bad. Normal falls I can shake off over all the gear.
I hear that, I’m done with my board for at least a week or so until this heals up a little bit. Also, I found the real problem, the nuts on one of the wheels was waaaay to tight, causing even the smallest of pebbles to lock the wheel.
Of course I’m saying that’d I’d rather snowboard while I still can’t straighten my left arm out all the way after fracturing it 3 months ago. It wasn’t even a hard turn, I just hit a small patch of ice on the carve and BOOM.
Funny thing is, my tolerance of pain is so ridiculous that I assumed it was just a bruise and kept boarding for several more hours. I didn’t even go to a doctor until about 6 days later lol. Stupid bones.
Haha, I’ve had a few of those. I didn’t know I broke my elbow for a couple weeks when I was younger. Then one day I noticed it would lock when I tried to bend it all the way, my mom convinced me to go to the ER and they found a piece of my bone chipped clean off.
Haha nice. The doctor was like legit mad at me when I eventually went. He was all “so when did this happen?”
“..uhh, like last Saturday?”
“WTF RISPFAIL OMG”
I’m paraphrasing, of course
Same here “So, these bruises look about a week old, when did the fall happen”
“A week sounds about right.”

Is there anything more sleep inducing than a west coast game with Bob Lorenz in the booth?
I know that I’m entirely alone on this, and I’m honestly surprised I’m even saying this, but I want Cervelli starting behind the plate. Oh god, what’s happened to me?!
he’s sucking even worse than Martin, but on AAA
His emotions, whilst sabotaging him, need to be displayed at the professional level. Make Franky happy, Franky will hit. Make Franky sad, Franky will not hit. Easy. As. Pie.
THat day off did a lot for Grandy.
I like this Granderson, not pull-happy.
OT with a chance to reach the Final on the line.
Fucking hell, man.
DEVILS WIN!
Ouch that was fast. Bye Bye Rangers.
That didn’t take long at all.
Fuck.
Keep looking at perfectly hittable pitches and swinging at shit in the dirt Arod.
NICE!!!!!!!!!!! I hope the Yankees win today, I’ve had a shitty couple days and them winning would definitely cheer me up.
Isn’t it crazy how sports can have that affect on us?
It’s one of the reasons I love them so much.
So do I. Even though I go up and down so much, when its up, it’s worth it
Oh No, Co Co!
At first I thought Cano hit the ball too well, but it got by Crisp.
Ribbie for Robbie.
Sorry, E8
It was an error, no ribbie.
Congrats to the Devils.
Rangers need offense.
TEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
he’s too pull happy =P
Damn Tex. Welcome to the 2012 Yankees.
Loving this haha
The Keystone Kop A’s
This is like little league defense. Love it.
oh don’t you just love Oakland
Good work. Nice to see Mark get a hit. Nova can breathe easy now against this lineup. Hope he goes deep and gets himself back on track.
late, but MARK!! finally!!
Didn’t Tex have a good series in Oakland last year that kind of got him going for a bit?
wooooooo!!!!!!!!!!
How did it ever make sense to put bullpens in foul territory?
I’ve never figured this out either.
I’d like to rationalize it by saying it’s a football stadium, but I know the Rays’ stadium is like that too, so I just don’t know.
Most/all of them used to be that way, or so I understand it.
I’m surprised there aren’t more injuries.
Holy balls, Nelson Cruz. Have a day why don’tcha!
According to the Gamecast, that strikezone was horrendous to Pennington.
One of the things I like about Nova is that he always look cool, even when he has had bad outings, he looks calm and collected. Like the anti-Burnett.
Rickey & Dave Stewart (1990), Tejada & Zito (2002) for the trivia? I know the second set is right.
Did Rickey win an MVP?
By the way. WORST TRADE EVER!
No idea, I assume he won one at some point.
Fact: Nolan Ryan never won a Cy Young.
Wah-wah
So we both has one right. It was Henderson and Welch
2002 A’s- Miguel Tejada and Barry Zito
1990 A’s- Canseco and either Stewart or Welch
It looks like there’s about 100 feet behind home plate, too. I’m surprised they don’t have a bullpen back there.
RUSSEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLL!
Nice, even Martin getting involved!!!!!
Russel Martin: determined to remain just below the Mendoza line.
C’mon Jeet!
I know its easy to say this now, but I had a gut feeling that this trip was where Tex and Martin got hot. They’re not done tonight.
Here’s hoping.
I hate that football stadium that pretends to be a baseball park.
Jeff Mathis is pitching.
Holy crap! I found a broadcast.
……
Its in Spanish.
Try the SAP button?
That makes it double spanish.
Yo quiero Taco Bell?
C’MON, A-ROD!!!!!! DO IT!!!!!
OMG!!! History?!?!
…not with that swing…
urghj
God damnit alex…how did you swing at that first pitch then let the 0-1 just sail in for strike 2…
Well that was disgusting
that sounds like five out of tune trombones together
Hahaha, Post of the night!!
Well played. I laughed.
RISPfail is almost laughable.
this is truly unbelievable. put someone on second or third, and i seriously would rather have an a ball player up to bat.
It’s amazing how nobody can just hit a long fly ball or a soft grounder that can only get one out. Right now I’d settle for 1 run in these situations.
They try too hard. They want to hit the grand slam
then what’s Jeter’s excuse?
Jeter was just unlucky
weak contact turning into an out is unlucky?
What’s the RISP stat thus far?
Send Jeter down!
Whoa
Despise Reddick with every fiber of my being. Pretty pathetic that he’s the A’s best hitter.
Nice snag by that yankee fan
Cano is always spewing seeds.
web gem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
RAUUL!
Raul wit da D!
Half serious: at some point, does Robby Thompson start sending runners home with none out? I mean, they’re not scoring this way.
Yankees could have bust the game wide open.
Annoying ass team that doesn’t hit with risp.
Still don’t think the A’s will score enough to pass 3 runs
Ibanez with the running catch
John Macolvich got old.
WOW
nice, only way we can score now
Too Many Homerz!!! is back?
it is if we hit less than .100 w/ risp for a month
Singleton just informed us that the Yanks lead the majors with GIDP with bases loaded. Lovely.
BUT! WOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Robbie!!!! What a Shot!!!!!!!
Robbie…your swing is just so beautiful..I need to go change my pants.
Does Bob Lorenz even have a home run call?
lol Tex. lol
…Damnit Tex! Even when you do well you FAIL!!!
Tex you’re not fast.
Nice play by Smith
What the fart. That sucked.
FUUUGG! Although enjoyable to see fair balls bouncing around in the fucking bullpen.
You’d think AJ Burnett was warming up in there.
Ahhhh…..Tex. Sigh.
LOL @ watching Tex run
Raul. Fuckin’ Raul.
What a stat: 21-6 when scoring 4+
But FALLACY
Nice an RBI double for Raul.
Oh right Tex is too damn slow. Nevermind.
Yankees hit so poorly with RISP that they can get back-to-back doubles and not score!
But if Tex was on base wouldn’t RISP fail kick in?
I think Tex was being a good teammate. His real mistake was not stopping at 1st so Raul could actually get a hit and upon realizing this he intentionally ran into the out at 3rd.
I love Tex. What we didn’t know is that if he made it to third he would have kept running for home, video game style. After all, 3rd is scoring position too.
FALLACY ALERT
Michael Kay’s not in the booth.
Doesnt matter. The logic of the fallacy is still there
Ah, the old notion the fallacy of the predetermined outcome.
It’s not an “old notion”. It’s true. Does Raul see that same sequence of pitches if Tex is on second or third? Highly doubtful.
RAAAUUUUUUUULL!!!….never get tired of saying that
So this is what offense feels like, it’s been a while…
Makes Tex’s basreunning blunder all the more painful.
FALLACY
It’s not a fallacy that it made it more painful. Pain can be descriptive and does not require predictive value.
Not when the source of the pain is that a run would have scored
What are you babbling about? It’s subjectively painful to see a baserunning mistake, and it’s even more subjectively painful when that baserunning mistake turns into a lost run.
C’mon, Swish. Just get a base hit.
WOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SWISHARO!!!!!!
Garbage Time?
Garbage Time.
I can see why this guy was a reliever.
West Coast games are the best. It’s so nice to see the big bad evil big market team abuse the little innocent small market team.
wtf was that? first time in a while we brought a run home from second or third
since the third inning anyways
Pride…Power…Pinstripes…
Swish going oppo???
Garbage time!
Havok, I just watched the video you posted…OMG I’d kill for assassin vision! And fire/water arrows. My biggest beef with the game is poisons when it comes to bows and arrows. You poison the bow, meaning one shot is poisoned…but everybody knows in the real world you’d poison the entire quiver. I’m not saying one bottle of poison should work for hundreds arrows, but I think like 20 would be fair.
Yeah, that video was a lot of fun. The music was….something. Tho I love “arrow to the knee” jokes, so it was all good.
It’ll be interesting to see how much of that stuff they end up putting into the game.
Well you said they were already working on the mounted battling, which is great. I’d like to see the expansion of mounts. I could see them holding the Dragon Mounts for the MMO though.
I’d love for the paralysis spell and stronger draugers, as well as the fear antrinochs.
I’m a Fear Antrinoch.
Shit, you wanna come on this quest with me…I’d doubt you’d work against this Elder Dragon, but you could at least distract it long enough for me to shoot it full of a bunch of different poisons.
I might just be drunk enough to face off against an Elder Dragon. Maybe ask me again in an hour, I’ll be there.
They’re working on the first DLC/expansion now, so we’ll see what they come up with for that.
Wow. Impressive homerun by Swish. Nice to see him go oppo. His walks are down though which is kinda weird.
We only hit homers with RISP – none of those singles or doubles or RBI groundout/sac fly things.
(I wish I was kidding.:-))
I’m loving all of these opposite field hits, especially the ones of the extra base variety.
Hey guys, I just started watching in time to see Swish hit an oppo bomb! (which was also a RISP hit!)
Also, what on earth happened that made Tex try for a triple?
A bloop that the LF slid for, Tex was busting it out of the box…but the ball got nowhere near far enough away for Tex to even think about trying for three.
Bloop down the LF line, the fielder misplayed it and it got by him, Tex tried to push it. He really should have just stayed a second.
Thanks guys.
You’re having fun with this aren’t you Greg?
It was only fair that I do it when they do well, if I do it when they fail
I like it.
Sounds like a mix between a train station and a nuclear launch
ewww chavez
wine, couch, late night ball don’t exactly mix. nice to wake up to that score though.
Good to see Swisher going the opposite way batting lefty. Even the flyout was to center. He can also get a bit pull happy from the left side at times.
Goddammit I hate these smoking commercials
I’ve got some maple sugar candy.
short leash for Nova tonight…he’s had an AJ quality to him this season…he seems to have one or two really bad innings.
Nova sucks.
Clearly.
That slide by Swish was….pretty cool actually.
Very slick, indeed
I think Swisher’s arm is underrated. He’s made a lot of really good throws this year from what I recall.
Yeah, he has. Its been nice to see.
Swish is a very underrated OFer in my opinion, even though he will occasionally make a bonehead play out there.
Eh. I would say he is underrated defensively, but I’d also say his arm isn’t that good at all. Its just looked better so far this season.
And there were those assists in ’09.
Way to keep giving the runs back Nova. Argh.
My God, you’d think it was 6-5.
Where you here on Thursday? There were commenters bitching about the Yankees winning 8-2…I couldn’t comprehend.
that was fun. 8-2? NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!!!!
Yeah, that was almost the only game I was here for last week. That was nuts.
It wasn’t even that they were finding a couple negative things to talk about that got me; it was that there were some guys that didn’t see a single positive worth talking about. THAT boggled my mind.
Wow that was some catch by Grandy.
Wow, Sizuki hit that ball a LONG way. I’m amazed Grandy ran that down.
This is a weird park, because that looked like a pop fly off the bat.
Yeah, it looked like it started to carry a bit once it got in the air.
Tex did it right that time
Nice curves!
Nasty pitch
thank god the a’s suck
hahaha
Niiiiiiiice K Nova.
Second and third, no out? Give up one run? I’ll take that every time.
This, especially since Tex snags that double most of the time.
Couldn’t you push bunt into the gap when they put the shift on? Is it too difficult to reliably bunt like that?
Considering the number of guys who have trouble bunting down the line, I’d say it is.
Brett Gardner’s been practicing his bunts non-stop for the last five years and he’s still not good at it. Tex hasn’t bunted probably since little league, he’s not going to lay one down like it’s a video game.
Good thing I’m not a manager: “Just bunt that fucker into the gap, asshole!”
Maybe not for Granderson, but almost definitely for a guy like Tex.
I feel like my mind was just raped by Bob Lorenz “late night” voice…
What the hell is Colon slamming into the floor of the dugout?
Seeds? Crack? Who knows?
Sunflower seeds. I used to do the same thing when I played.
Cano needs MOAR SEEDS!
Ugly hack to Cano there.
Lord, its the bottom of the 6th?
Time to make another drink.
Wayyyy ahead of ya.
You need a Bubba Keg.
I like the sound of “keg”.
Its a 52 ounce mug with heavy insulation. It also has a rubber gasket at the top to keep carbonated drinks carbonated for a looooonnng time.
It is, as the kids say, teh awesome.
Sign me up.
You might be far enough south when you get to DC to find them in Walmart and the other big-box stores.
So you’re telling me that I’m two weeks away from cheap mini-kegs? Wow. I thought I couldn’t wait to move out of my parents house anymore than I already am.
The 52 ounce is 15 bucks? 20? Something like that.
So yeah, that’s what I’m telling you. My family owns about 6 of the things in different sizes. I’ve got the Uber one with the attached bottle opener and enough insulation that I’ve still got ice 16 hours after I put it in there. Its fantastic.
I think I ate too much maple sugar candy too quickly.
Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
Swishalicious!
Holy Drachma what is going on with the Yanks…s
Would anyone else rather have Singleton solo than Lorenz/Singleton? I know I would.
Yup. Lorenz is fine for the pre/post game, but thats about it.
Yeah, nothing against Lorenz, but I don’t really like having him in the booth.
He’s really boring lol. I’d rather Kenny be doing the play-by-play.
Agreed. He’s not “Joe Buck boring”, but he almost sounds…depressing in some weird way.
He’s got a drone to his voice that’s just so mind numbing.
yeah, I gave up on the audio already
got the TV on mute with tunes on in the background
I can’t stand Lorenz
Put Mo in the booth!
He’s not particularly bothering me.
I’m in northern CA so I have to listen by radio (MLB.tv blacked out and I don’t have it on TV). The Oakland announcer is just boring enough that I’m deciding to mix it up and risk Sterling for an inning or so. Everyone wish me luck.
Sterling is an adventure, but I do think he’s better than most other announcers.
I hate that he sounds like the MovieFone guy. I just can’t stand his pompous attitude.
Duane Kuiper here in SF is by far the best I’ve heard. I love listening to him and his home run call is great, like a fan who’s legitimately excited about what’s happening.
Sterling is overdramatic, but he does a very good job of keeping you on point with the situation listening on radio.
I agree; of course, I only listen to him when I am blacked out from a Fox game.
I listen a lot driving in the car, and he keeps you very well appraised of the situation, which is what you care about when listening on the radio: men on base, pitch count, outs, etc.
Me, too. It’s unfortunate.
Swish!!!
Dang. With the glove.
Nova laughs at all who doubts him.
Hahah, I really liked that WB Mason commercial
WB Mason trucks around NYC have Yankees logos on them, and around Boston have Red Sock logos on them. You can’t trust those fuckers.
those turn coat mother fuckers!!!!!!!!!!!
Next time I walk by one of those WB Mason trucks, I’m gonna spit on it.
Would one of these idiots swing at a hanging breaking ball?
BUNT INTO THE GAP!
Oakland is 2nd only to Tampa in the “ugly stadium with annoying noises” catagory.
Remember when that guy used to be there at every game and he would buy a seat for himself and also one for his drum, then bang the damn thing all game? It drove me crazy.
Honestly, the cowbells at the Trop are worse. Of course, that’s not really saying much…
At least they don’t have vuvuzuelas.
get the pen up
Nova is just trash man.
Are you saying that he goes in the failure category?
What the you talking about? The dude is in the bottom of the seventh, thrown fewer than 100 pitches, and allowed three runs? How is that “trash”? Are you just trolling?
If 20 and 6 over the last year and a quarter is trash I’ll take more. He hasn’t lost on the road in nearly a year. You’re tough.
W-L is probably not a great stat to use, but you’re definitely right that he has been competent for a year running.
OK. Seriously, there is something about either this park or the wind, but even a real popout is flying out of the infield.
Jeez, Nova gets thrashed even by a team of banjo-hitters.
Thrashed? Wut?
Some people are drunker than other, is my theory.
I guess 7 IP and 3 ER is trash. Funny how far the trolls will reach.
It’s extremely irritating being referred to as a troll if you simply voice criticism of a mediocre pitching performance. Nova’s pitching has been very shaky. It just has. I don’t see how it’s “trolling” to point this out. He gets hit very hard, even by lousy offensive teams.
OK, maybe I was overreacting by saying “thrashed,” but it was in the heat of the moment and I was nervous that he’d give up a crooked number.
You can all ease off on the “trolling” bullshit. It’s not like I was calling for them to fire Cashman and Girardi and trade everyone else.
You’ve got an idiosyncratic definition of a mediocre pitching performance.
it’s somewhat mediocre if you factor in opponent and venue
giving up a .500 SLG against to a team with very little power in a pitcher’s park is a bit alarming (especially considering it’s been an ongoing problem for Nova this season)
Exactly. If he pitched like this against Texas it wouldn’t be much of a concern.
It’s the context. The A’s can’t hit at all, and Nova’s giving up line-drives to guys who are hitting under .200.
I know, these are still major league hitters and these things happen. We’re fans; we’re allowed to get frustrated when they do. Just as we’re allowed to get exasperated when Sabathia allows an 0-2 homerun to a non-hitter. Being annoyed by such things isn’t troll behavior. Saying they should trade CC for Strasburg is troll behavior.
+1
This. All of this.
You’re absolutely right. Although, to be fair, I think most of the trolling comment was directed at Karl Krawfid even tho he was responding to your comment. I certainly don’t have you in the troll book.
I’m probably just irritable because I’m actually not drinking at all.
I see him getting cuffed around pretty hard, even by this A’s team which can’t hit at all.
Its three runs off two solo shots and a sac fly. 6 hits, 1 walk.
It is, in other words, the kind of outing we’ve been seeing from Nova for the last year.
I’m not going to lie, still WAY to many homers, but as long as they remain solo shots…we’re ok.
No doubt.
He makes me nervous. I can’t help it.
Nervous is no problem. I’ll be the first to admit he pitches like Andy and Moose: living on the dangerous side and pitching out of jams.
But at some point we have to accept that that’s who he is. He’s not an ace and probably never will be. He’s not going to come in and dominate every start, or even most starts. Nonetheless, he IS an effective, and probably even good, pitcher.
Remember when he used to struggle after around the 5th? At least he’s all the way into the 7th.
Only Ivan Nova would make the A’s look like an offensively competitive team. The lead keeps getting smaller…
…….
Okay, this is just silly now.
Quit bitching about Nova he’s going to be 5 and 2 after tonight and 21 and 6 over the last year and a quarter and stretch his winning streak on the road to over a full year. He makes peanuts is young and has a bright future ahead of him. Give him some room.
Speaking of noises, I miss Freddy the pan man. I treasure the picture I have of me and my wife with him outside the stadium.
Nova’s got awful!! 3 runs over 7 innings against a big league line up?!?!?! UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does 4-5-6 of Seth Smith, Kila Monster and Josh Donaldson really qualify?
With one of the runs coming of a solo shot to a dude that’s 6th in the league? Absolutely.
Send him down! And Jeter too!
And trade Tex for a young cost controlled stud!!!(ignoring the face that Nova is)
I wonder how many people think the Yankees are going to lose this game. I’d bet more than few…
Too many.
Now everything A’s hit is in air. Nova was supposed to have a minor hamstring issue so maybe he did get tired.
If he keeps pitching like this, once he faces better teams, he may give up 50 homers this year.
Tack-on runs would be nice but that may be asking too much of this offense.
50 is the most home runs ever given up by any pitcher ever in a season.
Thought so – he is not too far off that pace (currently on pace for 43 and ball travels further in summer.)
Is it sick for me to kinda be wishing for another cushy save situation for Soriano with a 3-run lead in the 9th to build his confidence?
That’s what I want, but only because if he picks up ~35 saves this year, there’s a small chance of him opting out after the season.
Yes, exactly. Plus it doesn’t hurt to pump up your players values artificially with saves.
Nah, as long as you’re hoping for a win there’s no harm in being creative in your demands.
Especially since we’ve scored six runs already. Pretty much everyone should be happy with that, even though I know they aren’t.
Sick, dude.
I am officially drunk. Should I pour another drink?
Idk, there’s a day game after a night game tomorrow.
fuck it pouring
A WEST COAST day game. It’ll start at, what, 2 your guys’ time?
Pour it Nitabach.
4pm actually.
Whoops. Went the wrong way with the timezones.
It happens.
POURED!
Whatcha drinking this fine evening?
Carrot shochu on ice.
Distilled Japanese carrots?
Well, to each his own.
Of course. Its the beginning of a West Coast swing.
Well before I answer that question, a few questions for you
Are you responsible to do anything but sleep over the next 5-8 hours?
Do you plan on driving?
On a scale to “drunk” to “throwing up in bed, but to drunk to move to toilet” how drunk are you?
No.
No.
Still speaking coherently to my wife when asked the score.
Then drink away my friend!
There’s no such thing as an infield popup in this stadium.
Logan looks great, hope Joe let’s him finish the 8th and give Wade another day off. Soriano should close the 9th.
Man….Boone Logan.
Great inning by Logan there…I’m starting to trust him a little more.
On a good note Boone is striking out lefties with that slider like mad recently.
Did Logan not get the memo that 8th inning relievers are supposed to pitch themselves into a jam and then pitch out of it?
What’s with this 1-2-3 low stress inning?
After just 8 pitches, do you send him back out for the 9th?
Maybe if they score a run, otherwise go with Soriano.
Nah. I mean, I’d think about it, but Joe won’t unless a leftie is leading off.
Only if the save situation disappears, I would say, since it appears Joe is trying to establish Soriano as his closer.
1-2-3 innings are not sustainable. We need situational pitching. This is not a playoff team.
Okay, I laughed.
that’s funny. Greg’s tpir clip was the best though.
Arod is marching towards 3000
ARod with teh wheelz.
A-Rod man. Beast.
i like al on the base paths
Little too quick on the trigger with the foul ball. That was a HR waiting to happen.
lol … Joe Maddon calling out the Red Sox for “idiotic, incompetent, cowardly behavior”
https://twitter.com/RaysJoeMaddon/status/206246377758539776
Love it.
Baseball players running at each other and slapping like middle-school children is fucking hilarious.
I think Kyle Farnsworth is the only one who knows how to throw a decent punch. Unfortunately, it’s the only thing he does right.
This is the same guy who pitched around Teixeira a couple years ago to prevent him from beating Peña for the homerun title. Because that’s really professional.
They threw at him at least twice in that AB (and there were 2 other pitches inside).
They also hit him twice in the last series – once intentionally after an AGon HBP.
It was a bush league move by Valentine, et.al (who said something during the fracas that stirred shit up again). And then after the game Valentine trying to be cute said maybe it was the ghost of Fenway that led to him getting hit after he said bad things in the offseason about Red Sox fans (so clearly that is something in the Red Sox heads or why would he bring it up?).
The umps should have issued a warning or just flat out ejected Morales after a first pitch 97mph fastball behind him to start the AB which had rather obvious intent.
to any pre-med’s, doctors, or nurses on this joint, I got myself a pretty brutal abrasion this afternoon, about 10 hours ago…and it’s leaking a clearish/pink fluid…almost like sweat with a little bit of blood in it…is this normal? Or should I be talking to a doctor in person?
It’s officially as RAB time.
Based on my own experiences with bike crash road rash, that is normal. The healing is fastest and least painful if you keep the abrasion covered with a bandage and with triple antibiotic ointment. You don’t want it to scab up.
Yeah, what i have is for all intents and purposes road rash, just on a much smaller part of my body than one could expect from a motorcycle accident. Thank’s for the advice, I’ll definitely recover it w/ some neosporin before I go to sleep.
Disclaimer: don’t blame me if you die.
I promise I wont, I am however jealous, because my one friend said I wasn’t allowed to drink tonight because it’d thin my blood causing more bleeding…idk why I’m listening but I am.
Drink all you want. But if you die faster, don’t blame me.
Could tonight be the night of the 1-2-3 inning for Soriano?
Yeah, no
thanks for jinxing it asshole
To be fair, I posted this before he even got to the mound.
But yeah, I’ll accept the blame.
So close.
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
nope
MFIKY w. the 1-2-3?!?!?! What a good night.
spoke to soon I guess.
We jinxed it.
a 1-2-3 inning here would blow my mind
lol so much for that
And the quest for a 1-2-3 inning waits another day.
Do this!
YEEEEAASSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Soriano is nothing if not consistent.
and Third Place and climbing …
Nice win. Could it have been better? Sure. Could my broadcast have been in English? That would’ve been nice too.
But we still doubled up the other team and got the win. 3 straight.
All around, very solid win I think.
Besides Alex’s DP w/ the bases juiced, the offense looked good. Nova’s still allowing to much of the long ball, but like Mike Mussina always said if they’re solo shots, it’s one bad pitch, one run and you move on.
I hope Joe leaves Soriano in the closers role when Robertson returns. He’s been there before so why make Robertson do something he hasn’t done before when it’s not necessary. The 8th is his inning, he’s been excellent in that role and it’s a very tough role. I also think it gives Soriano some life and puts him back in a position he excelled at in Tampa Bay.
My understanding is that Girardi has declared Soriano the official closer, regardless of Roberston’s return.
Baby steps – Nova did look better (even with 2 HRs) and offense battered Ross. They went completely cold against relievers but I’ll take it.
I am hoping Colon’s fastball heavy repertoire will be right up Yanks alley – I remember several years ago when Arod battered Colon with 3 HRs and like 8 RBIs when he was with Angels.
Colon is starting tomorrow? Excellent.
They just showed Tex’s homer again…I’m glad the ball went out…but damn that was a BAAAAAAAAD swing.
In fairness he’s had a couple of big homers lately.
The scary part is that homering like that, pulling an outside pitch, is not the best way to get him to change his approach.
This park is weird and feeble pops were warning track, so yeah.
But A-Rod seems to have kept his foot down or whatever and looks good at the plate.
I miss Kim Jones.
hahahaha me too
Meredith Marakovits is a babe, but she’s not much in the personality department. KJ seemed like she’d be fun to hang out with.
Ummm, not that I’ve ever given it much thought.
I was at Dodger stadium last season (or maybe the season before: memory shot) for the Yanks game and I saw Kim Jones striding down the concourse towards the field. So I go, “Kim! Can I take a picture with you?” And she goes, “No! I’m in a hurry!” sadness
The cool thing was Reggie was at the game in uniform, and he was signing tons of balls and whatnot for little kids. It was pretty cool that they totally knew who he is.
I was at two of those games. That Dodgers crowd is rough. I can totally believe they’d stomp a guy near to death. The first game was awful, and the Dodgers pummeled Burnett.
But the second game I went to was the one where the Yanks scored 4 in the 9th and won it in extra innings. The crowd wasn’t so full of itself after that.
