Game 79: The Trop

By

Just as charming inside as it is outside. (AP Photo/Chris O’Meara)

The Yankees haven’t won a game at Tropicana Field in almost a year now. Their last win there was this combined shutout last July 20th, but they’ve since lost seven straight in their home away from home. Three of those games were the final series of last season, when the Yankees had no interest in winning and were more concerned with getting healthy and lining up the playoff rotation. Enabling the Rays to complete their end of The Collapse was just icing on the cake. The last three games of this seven-game winless streak were the first three games of this season, which featured a walk-off loss in the opener, a one-run loss in the second game, and a blowout loss in the finale. The Rays are reeling right now and it would be nice to get back into that Trop win column. Here’s the lineup…

DH Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
RF Nick Swisher
LF Andruw Jones
SS Jayson Nix
Chris Stewart

RHP Freddy Garcia

Coincidentally enough, Garcia was the starter the last time the Yankees won a game in this building. Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

Raul Ibanez Update: Ibanez (face) had to get stitches in his lip after smashing his face into the bench trying to avoid a foul ball yesterday. He passed a concussion test, has been cleared to play, and has rejoined the team in Tampa. Short version: he’s fine, just looks a little beat up.

  1. Brian S. says:

I bet Jeter is happy to face a lefty. Maybe now he can stop OPSing below .600.

  2. Greg says:

AS I said in the preview, we need to win at least 4 games this week in total to feel okay, in any combination

  3. Will The Thrill says:

This better not be a Rays series where I feel like pulling out my hair.

  4. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Since I no longer work for Tropicana, I can finally reveal ….. I hate The Trop!

  5. Brian S. says:

We should DL Ibanez just to be on the safe side. And call up a player that doesn’t suck.

    • Will The Thrill says:

Negatory. All of our minor league players that don’t suck are in A ball. Our upper minors suck therefore anyone we bring up would suck.

  6. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

    I like Stew catching Freddy.

  7. Greg says:

Well, its either Chris Berman or Ken Singleton

  8. I’m saying this before the game, any and all mistakes made by Chris Stewart where at the instruction of one Derek Jeter. Anybody to insult Chris Stewart for these mistakes will also be insulting Derek by extension.

  9. Tony says:

I can’t believe I have to listen to Chris Berman and Rick Suttcliff tonight. Those two combined with at least 6 hits robbed by the shift should make me want to punch myself

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I would love to listen to Boomer.

The biggest reason I hate Rays/Yankees games is that I can never listen to the YES telecasts. Blackout restrictions, so always Dwayne Staats and Brian Anderson. And while I find Anderson tolerable, I always appreciate Kay and Co. more once I’m able to listen to them again.

Honestly, as much as we tend to bash them, YES telecasts are much more professional than many others I listen to on a (semi)-regular basis.

  10. I’d love to know why John and Suzyn think you can “throw the numbers (of Freddy Garcia) out the window” and they “have a feeling he’s going to be great.”

  11. Hummingbird S. says:

I have a good feeling against Moore tonight.. offense is going good right now.

  12. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

The Rays should be humiliated that they can never even get decent sized crowds with the help of 15,000 Yankee fans.

  13. Hummingbird S. says:

Can anyone explain the logic behind A-Rod hitting 4th and Cano 5th? Moore sucks against lefty batters and A-Rod is not good against lefty pitching.

  14. Dewayne is Wise says:

Tropicana dome the worst stadium in baseball like playing in a wharehouse. As bad as …….the Kingdump.

  15. Greg says:

Well that stint under .300 didn’t last long

  16. Robinson Tilapia says:

Brian, I think Jeter just mouthed “suck my nuts” at you. I’m not sure. Maybe it’s the glare of the dome.

  17. Robinson Tilapia says:

Let’s cut these fuckers. Go Nova!

  18. Greg says:

    Oh Matsui

  19. Kramerica Industries says:

    Well, thanks Matsui.

That’s why he should never play the field. Again. Ever.

  20. Hummingbird S. says:

    more hits to LF, please!!!

    ps. poor hideki

  21. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

The Rays play the game the right way. Including putting Matsui in the field.

  22. TCMiller30 says:

    HIDEKI!! Haha

  23. Robinson Tilapia says:

Matsui should now pull off his shirt in order to reveal a Yankee jersey. NWO 4 Life.

    • Dewayne is Wise says:

      I loled

    • Countryclub says:

      Haha

    • Kramerica Industries says:

That just reminds me of an awful commercial that was locally produced in, I wanna say 2008?, with a “Yankees” fan doing a “lets go Yankees” chant in the ticket line, only for an assclown to come up, criticize his ass for being a Yankee fan in TB, and then revealed that he had a golden Rays shirt underneath his Yankee gear.

      1) Like that would ever happen

      2) Steve Deumig is a stuck-up, narrow-minded asshole

      3) Red Sox fans are much, much worse, and there’s actually a lot more of a rivalry with those two than the Yankees and Rays (with which the Rays can only blame themselves – we were only one game from seeing a Yankees/Rays ALCS in 2010, but then they got Cliff Lee’d).

    • Erica says:

      Trolololololo

  24. Hummingbird S. says:

    Comon Robbie, no DP please

  25. Greg says:

    3 for 4 with RISP

  26. Tom says:

Berman + Sutcliffe doing the ESPN game… ugh….

And for some reason they really like that camera shot from behind the catcher.

    • Kev says:

Seriously annoying camera angle – especially since they like to use once per batter. “It’s okay ESPN, we really didn’t care to see pitch location or anything like that.”

  27. Kramerica Industries says:

Robbie RISP has been in correction for a week or so now.

  28. Hummingbird S. says:

damn, they arent missing anythign right now

  29. Dela G says:

    loving this inning so far

  30. Dewayne is Wise says:

Wow was the whole team on the mound?
    They should hold his hand.

  31. Will (the other one) says:

Great to see some first-inning support for the Big Sweat here. If only the mostly-worthless Curtis Granderson hadn’t grounded out, we could really have something special going…

  32. Robinson Tilapia says:

Let’s get some pre-sweaty runs here!

  33. BK2ATL says:

Poor Hideki. Cashman looks more and more like a genius the more these guys (Matsui and Damon) keep playing. At this stage, they’re only DHs.

    Cano continues the hot streak!!!

  34. Greg says:

Still a very good inning. 3-5 with RISP

  35. God damnit…Hopefully we continue hitting the ball like that and Moore doesn’t settle down.

  36. Hummingbird S. says:

that was a good start.. let’s hope Freddy still has something left

  37. Tom says:

By the way lefties are hitting with a ~.900OPS against Moore, righties ~.700

Given his 2nd best pitch is a change and his curve has been poor, I’m not sure this is a guy you load up righties against.

  38. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Gin. Tamarind juice. Soda.

  39. Kramerica Industries says:

    I love this pitching matchup.

Dime a dozen slop-throwing righty vs. million dollar armed lefty

    Couldn’t be more different.

  40. Greg says:

Oh Curtis don’t do that again

  41. RI$P FTW, why do you hate me so?

  42. Erica says:

    SWISHER

  43. Need Pitching says:

    Swish!!!

  44. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

    I guess it’s garbage time…

  45. Yay, Swish, good job making up for the DP.

  46. Hummingbird S. says:

it’s gonna be a long night with Freddy and his pitches up in the zone.. at least the D seems to be working..

  47. Kramerica Industries says:

Never thought I’d see the day in Tropicana Field where the Yankees had such a defensive advantage in an OF position.

  48. Tom says:

That ain’t Matsui out there for NY!

  49. Greg says:

One good thing about Berman is that we know is not going to be anti-Yankee like McDonough.

  50. They just used the Gardner WCBS radio spot…I miss him so much lol.

  51. Greg says:

    Scott Hairston please

  52. Hummingbird S. says:

    nice stewart hit from stewart

  53. Chris Stewart with another clutchy single of a glove.

  54. Tom says:

Is it too early to pinch run for Stewart or do we need to keep that potent bat in the lineup? :-)

  55. Brian S. says:

John Sickels published his top 120 prospect list today. Do people like Sickels here?

  56. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Nooo Hideki

  57. Greg says:

I dont know why Keppinger wasn’t out there in the first place. He’s been on fire

  58. Erica says:

Is it weird that I was a little sad when Matsui didn’t catch that ball that wound up scoring Jeter? Just because, y’know, it’s Matsui…ergh. FEELINGS.

  59. Tom says:

Not sure how many are watching the ESPN broadcast, but does anyone else find the behind the catcher camera shot a complete waste during live action?

  60. Hummingbird S. says:

another pitch up in the zone, another hard hit ball.. Freddy should not be starting games for a team like the Yankees..

  61. Pat D says:

Well, Mike did say Hideki is likely to get the Ol’ Yeller treatment…

    So sad.

  62. Will The Thrill says:

Ben Zobrist always seems to have epic at bats when playing against the Yankees.

  63. Kramerica Industries says:

Jeez, Zobrist was getting some really good swings in there.

  64. Erica says:

    TEX WTFBBQ

  65. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Tex.

  66. Need Pitching says:

Freddy playing with fire so far.

  67. Tom says:

Were the last 2 pitches to Granderson in the strike zone?

  68. Cuso says:

    Joe West is a sh!thead

  69. Erica says:

    Left hamstring tightness for Hideki.

  70. flamingo says:

Completely OT, but in case you were wondering:

    http://shouldthemarinerstradefelixhernandez.com/

  71. Will The Thrill says:

You can tell that Moore is pitching around the righties to get to the lefties. Punk.

  72. Erica says:

    FUUUUU.

  73. ArchStanton says:

Aaron Boone just said “that little cock in his hands.”

    • ArchStanton says:

He was trying to describe the way Cano swings, that “he cocks his hands” but it came out all wrong…. He had a pause between cock and the rest of it.

  74. Greg says:

So we’re even on that account

  75. Hummingbird S. says:

    fuck… tough luck there.

  76. Brian S. says:

    Dammit.

  77. Greg says:

Love Kay’s face in that Sheen ad

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

You know that Centerstage is going to be all bark and no bite. Sheen’s totally trying to rehab his image a bit now.

  78. Will The Thrill says:

Cano lines out to pitcher for double play. #ShitThatHappensInRaysSeries

    • Greg says:

Well remember Luke Scott lined out to Tex for a double play so now we’re even

    • eephus_pitch says:

According to Flaherty, this was all because of the pitching coach’s instruction.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

“Get him to hit the ball hard at someone. It’s worked for Garcia”

        • eephus_pitch says:

“Throw a fastball right down the middle to the player of the month. He’ll probably hit it right to your glove. It never fails.”

  79. eephus_pitch says:

According to this Wendy’s commercial, it’s better to eat at a fast food restaurant than to buy your groceries at the supermarket.
    That… that takes balls.

  80. Will The Thrill says:

Meredith Marakovitz is so hot. Young teacher hot.

  81. Pat D says:

Seeing Will Rhymes stand next to George Hendrick is pretty funny.

It reminds me of Bobby Meacham standing next to Dave Winfield.

  82. Chip says:

Jeter wouldn’t have gotten to that ball

  83. eephus_pitch says:

According to Flaherty, Freddie’s looked very sharp so far.
Flash is usually better than this.

  84. JobaWockeeZ says:

    All I know is Munson.

  85. Kramerica Industries says:

Ok, so Sun Sports trivia was “which four active players have three or more consecutive seasons of 20 HR and .300 BA”.

Answers not revealed yet, but my guesses would have to be Cano (obviously), Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton, and Matt Kemp.

I’m not going to look up those other three to see if I’m right. They seem as likely as anything, to me.

  86. Hummingbird S. says:

they are having some nice ABs against Moore so far..

  87. BK2ATL says:

Look at Jayson Nix. Base hits and stolen bases out of the 9 hole. Who knew?

  88. Greg says:

    Still no RISP fail 3-7

  89. Brian S. says:

No, Lou Pinella, Stewart is not doing a good job with the bat.

  90. Pat D says:

Murcer, Lyle and Munson is the trivia answer. I feel so special because I knew it before I looked it up.

Or…rather, I correctly guessed it before looking it up.

  91. Tom says:

Whil I think Moore will be good in time, media folks have greatly exaggerated his command and polish.

He’s missing with his fastball a lot, leaving changeups up (though it looks like he has good action on it), and his curve is not nearly as good as advertised.

Basically issues that most rookie pitchers have, it’s just that people made is sound like was a far more polished pitcher (I think that is the default assumption for any Rays pitcher)

    • Mike E says:

He never had great command in the minors, which I think becomes a big problem with the patient bats in the AL East. He’s only 23 though, so there’s plenty of upside. Moore is a great pitcher, but the media over hypes all of the Ray’s pitching prospects, so there’s really no surprise here.

  92. Erica says:

    #toomanyhomeruns

    Oh. Wrong team.

  93. Kramerica Industries says:

It’s about time Garcia got burned on one of his meatballs.

  94. Greg says:

    Took ‘em long enough

  95. Brian S. says:

    Why didn’t Cano take Ortiz?

  96. Pat D says:

Time for the offense to get a few more.

  97. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Let me guess: It’s over.

  98. Will The Thrill says:

Why did I know BJ Upton would be swinging first pitch and that it would be a home run? Argh.

  99. eephus_pitch says:

    Stupid train whistle.

  100. Mr. Pink says:

    Dear Offense,

Please wake up and score many runs this series and next.

  101. BK2ATL says:

I would LOVE for Fredy to give us 5 innings and keep us in the lead. Begging for more right now, is asking to get burned. He hasn’t thrown this many pitches in a while.

  102. Kramerica Industries says:

    Damn.

    Cano and Cabrera, yes.

Joey Votto and Ryan Braun, not Justin Upton and Matt Kemp.

Surprised I forgot those names during the thought process.

  103. eephus_pitch says:

Jeter getting trigger-happy there. This pitcher’s not sharp and he’s been nibbling. Take a couple.

  104. Will The Thrill says:

Matt Moore looking locked in. Grreeattttt…

  105. Brian S. says:

    Kranderson.

  106. Greg says:

This is probably going to be Freddy’s last inning because he’s at 52 pitches and Joe said he would go 65-70.

  107. If Freddy can get 3-6 more outs with out getting burned again…I’ll be more than happy.

  108. Pat D says:

I’m glad Luke Scott grew those mutton chops to make me hate and despise him even more than I already did.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Luke Scott deserves a heart punch.

      • Pat D says:

        Who’s throwing it?

Mean Mark Callous, Crush (RIP), or The Big Show?

Did I forget anyone else who used it as a finishing move?

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

The master of the heart punch, Ox Baker. Look it up.

          • Pat D says:

Anyone who teamed with Skandor Akbar is cool with me.

Why had I never heard of him? I’m so ashamed.

            • Robinson Tilapia says:

70′s and 80′s territorial guys who never wrestled for Vince or Crockett have been forgotten.

              • Pat D says:

At least Vince kinda sorta acknowledges WCW/JCP, AWA, ECW, WCCW and Championship Wrestling from Florida.

I value those historical DVD releases because they contain a lot of interesting stuff. And I like to point out what they leave out.

                • Robinson Tilapia says:

Yeah, because he bought out all the video collections after he bankrupted them.

20 years ago, they were debuting that spry youngster, Dusty Rhodes, on WWF TB.

    • Brian S. says:

I used to hate him until he insulted Boston fans. Now I only dislike him, mostly for his birther comments.

      • Pat D says:

Yea, I can’t forgive him for those.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

It makes me want to say “don’t ruin my opinion of you as a baseball player by telling me your political POV,” but then I’d just be a hypocrite since, if some other player came out in support tomorrow of some progressive cause, I’d cheer him on.

          Life is complicated.

Then again, there’s political POV, and then there’s straight-out delusion…

  109. Hummingbird S. says:

    nice pitch by Freddy there..

  110. A Troll says:

    ….

  111. Lol Suzyn Waldman just called out Martin as “flat out bad.”

  112. Will The Thrill says:

I’m starting to see why the sabremetrics don’t like Grandy in center. He’s got weak range and gets poor reads on balls. He’s not terrible but he’s no Mike Trout.

  113. christopher says:

This has got be one of the more experienced booths in the game. All players, right?

  114. Hummingbird S. says:

now is a great time for the offense to score some runs.

  115. Need Pitching says:

    Very acceptable start by Freddy.

  116. Greg says:

I knew Freddy would have an easy time with this lineup. Of course he got some help from the defense, but he handled himself okay.

The Red Sox lineup is another story

  117. Robinson Tilapia says:

Five innings. One run. Now that is the definition of doing what you were supposed to.

    C’mon, let’s sweat….baby! Let the music take control…

  118. Frank says:

Nice job by Gracia. Hopefully, he can give Yanks 1 more inning before turning it over to the BP. A couple of runs would also be nice.

  119. Greg says:

    SHIFT BEATEN

  120. christopher says:

    Perfect infield hit by Robbie.

  121. christopher says:

I like that, Lou -250 pitch outside +250 pitch inside.

  122. Tom says:

Rick Sutcliffe and Berman analyzing the impact of the batting practice pitcher for the HR derby…. thank you ESPN for this crap!

I’d get it if it was a blow out but it’s the 5th inning in a 1 run game.

    • Pat D says:

ESPN is all about promoting their own shit.

I really resented having to watch all that Euro coverage when I couldn’t give two shits about fucking soccer. Especially after I read about the racist chants during some of the countries’ practice sessions. Really? I thought Europeans were supposed to be sophisticated. But then again, it was all in Eastern Europe where they’re barely out of the Iron Curtain, so…yea, they’re assclowns.

      • New Yorkers and Bostonians are supposed to be more sophisticated than the rest of the country, Californians as well. Sophistication falls apart the second sports get involved.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

It’s not so much sophistication, as it is just self-entitled douchebaggery.

Just because we/they think they are more sophisticated, doesn’t mean they are.

  123. Brian S. says:

I hate how Swisher has stopped drawing walks.

  124. http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....nt-4495914

I just feel like posting this somewhere it’ll be seen: Just because one excels at a sport doesn’t mean they know anything about it. See Micheal Jordan. Probably the best basketball player ever, but horrible basketball exec.

  125. Greg says:

3-8 with RISP Still not technical failure

  126. Hummingbird S. says:

    another rally wasted..

  127. Kramerica Industries says:

    Damn these double plays.

  128. Brian S. says:

Would have been nice to get a run there…

  129. Tom says:

Damn he hit that pretty well… Moore has cut an inning off his pitch count with 3 DP’s in 6 innings.

11 of 26 batters reach base and only 2 runs, that’s some good fortune for Mr Moore.

  130. Will The Thrill says:

RISP Fail against the Rays/Red Sox = The Worst Kind of RISP Fail.

  131. christopher says:

The field at theTrop looks like the worn out old couch I used to have in my college years apartment. I got that couch off the street one night and carried it with a friend into my place. Do you think they got the Trop field the same way?

  132. eephus_pitch says:

    Harrumph

  133. Pat D says:

Left him in too long comments to start.

  134. christopher says:

    Ouch, Freddy.

  135. Kramerica Industries says:

Pena hitting a home run against the Yankees?

    Well, that’s a fucking shocker, isn’t it!

  136. Karl Krawfid says:

    Joe G’s fault.

  137. Cy Pettitte says:

can’t even describe how predictable that was. Garcia shouldn’t have been in still.

  138. flamingo says:

    Well.

  139. Hummingbird S. says:

    most predictable shit ever…

  140. BK2ATL says:

    Here they come.

  141. Tom Q says:

Well, the way the Yanks were leaving men on, you just had the feeling something like that would happen.

Not that Girardi’s alternatives were stellar, but it felt like a mistake trying to squeeze one more out of Freddy.

      • Tom Q says:

Go fuck yourself. You were saying two innings ago Freddy was coming up on his pitch limit. He passed it, and finished the 5th. It’s not trolling to say having him start another inning, in uncharted pitch count territory, was questionable.

You’re not the goddamn monitor here.

        • Greg says:

If the reasoning is sound (not wasting a member of the bullpen early on one batter) then I won’t question it

          • Tom Q says:

I said the alternatives were not stellar (reading comprehension; try it). Tossing out a number says “I dismiss your entire thought process”; it’s insulting bullshit, and beneath you.

  142. Pat D says:

Oh, those clever Rays, always playing “Hey Joe” when Girardi makes a pitching change.

  143. bonestock94 says:

Oh god go to hell Chris Berman, why would they do this.

  144. eephus_pitch says:

I hope Carlos Peña and Howie Kendrick never play together. Whatever team they’re on would score 10 runs a game versus the Yanks.

  145. Will The Thrill says:

The offense letting us down like always. It was unrealistic to expect Freddy to shut them out.

  146. christopher says:

He left Freddy in until it was time to take ehim out. What else are you supposed to do? Cant mange any other way with the current state of the starter staff.

  147. Need Pitching says:

    wtf was that ARod?

  148. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Rapada should have been in to face Pena.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Stop counting. You can’t say you’d rather have Pena face Freddy than Rapada.

        • Greg says:

So you want to waste a member of an already close to overworked bullpen for one batter. That’s a good idea.

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

One batter. He is useless against righties, so why not use him against the Rays best LHB?

          • Andy says:

There are trolls, and then there are people who disagree with you. They aren’t the same

          • Need Pitching says:

That’s kind of a ridiculous statement
The bullpen has thrown a total of 3 innings over the past 2 games, and Freddy was pretty much already at his pitch count limit anyways.
And Rapada is a Loogy. One big lefty is how he is used. The Rays don’t have lefties stacked anywhere in their lineup.

  149. Kramerica Industries says:

This “count” bullshit needs to stop, like, yesterday.

To basically copy a post of mine that I just made – it smacks of self-entitled douchebaggery.

    • Greg says:

Its deserved with people blaming Girardi willy nilly

      • Need Pitching says:

        that’s really not “willy nilly”
It’s a legitimate argument, that maybe a lefty would be better against Pena there instead of a tiring Freddy.

        • Greg says:

If there is some logic behind his reasoning for doing something, then I am not going to question it

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Girardi’s logic will be “Freddy was throwing the ball well”

    • eephus_pitch says:

      It’s really obnoxious. Clique-y bullshit.

      • Pat D says:

        It’s all about The Kliq.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

        Go ahead run, bitches.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

          Replyfail.

It’s not clique-y, btw. It’s one friggin guy doing it. Even I don’t particularly like it, and I was the first one to do it.

          • eephus_pitch says:

I apologize, then. It just seems weird to me. Like people are saying only one kind of comment is allowed here, otherwise you’re branded a troll.

Of course there really are some total trolls (like that psychopath stuart) but I think it’s certainly fair to wonder whether Garcia was left in for too long. That’s not an especially trollish thing to say.
Personally I don’t see what could have been done differently. It’s OK to go batter-to-batter like that, especially when it seemed like he was getting guys out. The unfortunate downside of doing that is that it was only a one-run game. It only takes the one batter to change the complexion.

    • Tom says:

      +1

Especially when ironically someone who bascially only relies on hindsight to reply to others is doing the counting about people making comments based on hindsight.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

I don’t know. I can easily ignore numbers instead of the paragraphs of death threats.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

      I created a monster.

  150. christopher says:

    Solid outing from Freddy.

  151. christopher says:

    Yes. BIg DP.

  152. Well, going to try to see Ted again, have tickets this time though. Hopefully we pull this out, I’ll be following via phone though.

  153. flamingo says:

    NICE.

  154. Will The Thrill says:

I think I dread Rays series as much as Mets fans dread the Subway Series.

  155. Greg says:

Another problem for the Yankees is that they only have hit singles off of Moore. Only 2 doubles and they both scored

    • Will The Thrill says:

The lack of .300 hitters and hitters who hit extra base hits is what separates the Yankees from the offenses of the Rangers and Red Sox. I’m not saying the Yanks don’t have a good offense but the lack of doubles is alarming, especially from A-Rod and Tex.

  156. Brian S. says:

    CHRIS STEWART 4 LYFE

  157. Frank says:

    Nice AB for Stew.

  158. Kramerica Industries says:

    Thank you Matt.

Try hitting into that GIDP now, Jeter!

  159. Pat D says:

Ah ha, that time Jeter DID tell Stewart to go.

  160. Frank says:

    Gotta get this guy in.

  161. Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

I blame Jeter for waving Stewart to 2nd.

  162. Will The Thrill says:

    #stupidbunt

  163. Tom says:

I’d rather just Jeter took a shot toward driving the ball to the right side

  164. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

“You don’t see Jeter bunt often.”

Has Lou ever watched a Yankees game?

  165. christopher says:

Wow, I didn’t think that was far enough. Nice play, Jetes.

  166. Greg says:

    Well done everyone

  167. christopher says:

    Okay, solid fundamnetal ball.

  168. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    RISP success!

  169. Frank says:

    Grandy good job.

  170. Mike Axisa says:

Nice job with two strikes, Grandy. But I’m sure everyone will keep complaining about the strikeouts.

  171. Will The Thrill says:

It feels like the Yankees always have to fight to score even one run against the Rays. Now I know how the Mariners feel. Haha.

  172. Greg says:

So 3-9 with a sac fly and 2 productive outs (Grandy in the first, Jeter just now)

  173. Ivan says:

They manufactured a run….there are you guys happy???

  174. Tom says:

Probably would have scored anyway, but Jennings cost Upton any chance at making that play….

Run without a hit… Rays Yankees baseball! (while the Rays are over-reliant on the HR?)

  175. Pat D says:

Moose Tacos saying “You should have taken me instead of Butler, you fucking idiot Washington! Why the hell did you take a 3rd DH instead of taking someone who could play the field?!?!?”

  176. Kramerica Industries says:

    Eppley vs. Zobrist?

    Interesting……

  177. Pat D says:

I’m getting sick of Subway pushing avocado on us.

  178. Andy says:

Eppley is an hero. 3 outs on 6 pitches

  179. pistol pete says:

Why is Cano hitting 5th. He’s the hottest hitter in the game right now and one of the best players in baseball and Girardi still has him follow Grandy (vs a lefty), Tex, and Arod who’s not actually at his best lately. The guy baffles me with his book.

    • Will The Thrill says:

Seriously. Also A-Rod should be batting fifth until he shows some life and ability to hit more than just singles.

    • Need Pitching says:

Cano has awful numbers vs. LHP this year, but I agree, as hot as he has been, he shouldn’t be dropped, especially since Tex has done nothing to deserve being moved up in the lineup.

  180. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

If someone caught that after it bounced down would it be an out?

My God the Trop is shit.

  181. Kramerica Industries says:

Walking Sean Rodriguez after a 1-2 count.

That just can’t happen. He’s an awful, awful hitter.

  182. Tom says:

I’m not sure if he’ll do it, but at some point Girardi might want to get Roberston up for a 4 out appearance (if they get to 2 outw and have a righty up)

Getting a win with Garcia starting would be a big lift

  183. Karl Krawfid says:

This is the Boone Logan we know and love right here folks.

  184. Need Pitching says:

    Chris Stewart: Defensive Wiz

  185. Will The Thrill says:

I don’t think the Yankees realize how crappy Sean Rodriguez is yet they always pitch to him like he’s Miguel Cabrera. I still cringe when I think about the intentional walk to Sean Rodriguez to pitch to Pena.

  186. Greg says:

    Big out

  187. Andy says:

Did Flaherty really say Stewart hasn’t had trouble receiving the ball? He has more past balls than most starters.

  188. Kramerica Industries says:

Here’s another shitty Rays scrub waiting to do damage, like many of them seem to do.

Brooks Conrad, yay! Hey, Brooksie, remember fucking your team over in the playoffs a couple years ago?

    • Pat D says:

I’m guessing he’ll take that to the grave, like Bill Buckner and Leon Durham and Scott Norwood and…

  189. Mr. Pink says:

Uh-Oh Brooks Conrad. He was just acquired and sprinkled with the Rays lucky pixie dust by Fernando Rodney.

  190. Cuso says:

It’s blatantly obvious that West puts the squeeze on the Yanks in certain situations. That 2-2 pitch to Rodriguezshould’fe been called a strike. He will definitely call it against the Yanks if they were batting. Whether it’s subconscious or not, he always f@cks op the marginal calls against the Yanks. He’s not as confrontational as Balking Bob, but he’s just as much a prick.

  191. christopher says:

Man, that’s a camera angle you don’t see too much over 2nd base.

  192. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Well Suszyn…

  193. Greg says:

Cant blame Girardi for that one

  194. christopher says:

    Ugh.

  195. Cy Pettitte says:

    beat by Brooks Conrad.

    what a fucking joke.

  196. Kramerica Industries says:

    Holy shit.

I wasn’t lying about my comment.

    Self-fulfilling prophecy FTL.

  197. Karl Krawfid says:

D-Rob has been trash since coming off the DL.

  198. Need Pitching says:

    Brooks fucking Conrad?
    Really?

  199. Cuso says:

Happy, Cowboy Joe? You old fat piece of crap.

Stick your crap record up your a$$.

  200. Will The Thrill says:

That’s what D-Rob gets for pitching like a bitch to a .150 hitter.

  201. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Guess the yanks are just gonna get beat by .200 hitters

  202. Robinson Tilapia says:

I’ll admit it. I had a bad feeling about that. D-Rob not in a place where he should be coming in with runners on base right now.

  203. Tut says:

    Nice over managing by Girardi.

  204. Dewayne is Wise says:

D rob just can hold a lead since hes come off dl

  205. christopher says:

I vote we close this down right here, D-rob.

  206. Tom says:

Damn…. walking Sean Rodriguez, PB/WP/SB, fallin behing Brooks Conrad 3-1…

The Yankees were asking for trouble this inning.

  207. flamingo says:

    BLAH.

  208. Widget says:

Walking garbage hitters, giving up hits to garbage hitters, anything else crappy you want to do tonight Yankees?

  209. Brian S. says:

    Robertson sucks against the Rays.

  210. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Ugh.

  211. Need Pitching says:

    WTF Tex

  212. Greg says:

There’s just something about this park…

  213. Widget says:

Just give up a damn homer already Robertson so I can stop watching this game.

  214. Leg-End says:

    Urgh, just urgh.

  215. Robinson Tilapia says:

If you all don’t stop, and I’m going to ask Greg to start counting.

  216. christopher says:

Wow, don’t see that too often from Tex.

  217. Pat D says:

That’s a sign that it isn’t your night.

  218. Kramerica Industries says:

    Wait….

    REALLY?

The Yankees just got hurt this inning by Sean Rodriguez, Brooks Conrad, and Elliot Johnson.

God. Fuck that team, and fuck this stadium. It’s like Angel Stadium right now, except it sucks even more.

  219. DERP says:

    Fuck you Robertson

  220. Cuso says:

    Come on. Really?

  221. Bunt Gardner says:

    I hate the Trop.

  222. Knoxvillain says:

Girardi really needs to fix his bullshit calls with the bullpen. Logan should have never been taken out.

    Please die, Girardi. Please.

  223. flamingo says:

    Wow, this inning sucks.

  224. Ivan says:

    That sucks

  225. christopher says:

Okay, time to score some runs.

  226. Widget says:

you deserve to lose a game when you walk shit like Sean Eyebrows.

  227. Pat D says:

    This game is hardly over.

  228. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Time to get Hammels

  229. Kramerica Industries says:

So, this is basically a one inning game now, because Fernando Rodney is suddenly a lights out closer after years of being shit.

Would really, really hate to lose a game where Freddy pitched decently, and the Yankees were facing THIS lineup. It doesn’t get any easier the next two days.

  230. Karl Krawfid says:

So he burned Logan and Robertson for 1 inning.

    Niiiice Yeaaaaah.

  231. Widget says:

I assume Chris Berman and the other ESPN clowns commentating tonight are bust their loads all over the place with the excitement of the Yankees losing.

  232. Tom says:

    2 runs on 1 hit that inning… that’s rough.

  233. Will The Thrill says:

It always amazes me how the Yankees constantly let Rays scrubs beat them. Pathetic. They pitch with fear to .150 hitters. Pitch let a damn man!

  234. Athenian says:

by count this would be the third game the Yankees should have won since the end of their 10 game winning streak…. second game against the Braves, first game against the Sox, and ??????

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

Eh, you could say that both teams “should have won” most close games.

  235. Need Pitching says:

    WTP

  236. Andy says:

    fuck. thought that was out

  237. Greg says:

Going into my negative mode right now.

They need to win just 4 games this week.

  238. Knoxvillain says:

    Waiting for Stuart…

  239. Tom says:

Great now we get Pin Tar Peralta… cheating bastard should have got more than 8 games.

  240. christopher says:

Damn, I thought we had one.

  241. Widget says:

Tex and A-Rod hitting in front of Cano is a crime against baseball decency. Sometimes I really dislike Girardi.

  242. Pat D says:

Can anyone tell me if that would’ve been out in YS3?

My dad’s insisting it wouldn’t because it’s 385 there in YS3, but I don’t think it is in that spot.

    • Knoxvillain says:

      I say it would be.

    • Brian S. says:

The ball doesn’t carry in Tampa like it does in New York. So maybe.

    • Tom says:

It’s not just the distance, the ball doesn’t carry very well at the Trop…. look at the home road splits of a lot of the Rays pitchers.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

Ball doesn’t carry well at the Trop because it’s an indoor stadium.

The only air flow comes from AC. And I doubt that has anywhere near the same effect as natural wind patterns.

  243. christopher says:

    Peralta has one weird delivery.

  244. TommyBoy says:

Bottom of the order in the 9th. Don’t score here and games over.

  245. stuart a says:

give arod a homer for that 1, he hit it to the wall.. arod with those whopping 35 rbi’s on pace for about 79 for the season. heck of a ballplayer…

  246. captain kiwi says:

yikes, the game was looking good when i left work! jeez i hate the rays. looks like an ugly past 2 innings. i’ma needz swish to step it up a bit this inning

  247. Erica says:

My mom is a Mets fan and walked in my room right before Tex faux-Buckner’d. I told her she’s bad luck and she has not exited my room yet.

  248. Will The Thrill says:

I don’t want to watch the rest of this series if the Yankees are going to continue to play like pussies against the Rays.

  249. stuart a says:

    give arod a sympathy Homer.

he deserves it after all he had a good swing..

35 rbis for the superstar.. tex with a 245 or so BA our corner guys are killing it….give them both extensions, do not want to upset them….

  250. Knoxvillain says:

Farnsworth up? My body is ready.

  251. Cuso says:

I guarantee West is gonna ring up Swisher on a ball

  252. stuart a says:

arod lovefest… lets do it. arod good swing.. better time next time. great try.

    blah blah blah.

the guy is hitting 4th……say no more…….

  253. Tut says:

Arod and Tex both with sub .800 OPS’s. Cano should be batting 3rd.

    • Evan3457 says:

…and then the “holes” move to 4th and 5th, plus you allow a lefty in the late innings to fact both without having to face a righty in between.

  254. Athenian says:

anyone else having issued with mlb.com feed of this game?

  255. christopher says:

    Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuumer

  256. Tom says:

Pleas tell me it’s not Qualls/Rapada in the 8th… this is a 1 run game and is winnable.

  257. Greg says:

Well the Yankees didnt fail with RISP. Girardi went to his better pitchers and they didn’t step up.

Baseball Gods must no want us to win this one

    • Pat D says:

      There are no baseball gods.

    • Frank says:

They hit into 3 DPs. What game are you watching?

      • Greg says:

So hitting .333 with RISP is failing

        • Tom says:

Again one “hit” was a popup that was only a hit because Matsui so badly misplayed a shallow pop fly that it didn’t hit his glove

They also generated 10 outs in those 9 AB’s (10PA’s)… pure avg is not a great stat.

          • Greg says:

Then tell baseball to change the way they put stats together

            • Tom says:

Or we can just intelligently interpret the stats, rather than mindlessly and ignorantly quoting #’s when they suit you?

The Yankees have 2 run scoring hits (one of which is a misplayed pop fly) and a sac fly. If that seems like success to you, then you are just being a slave to the #’s… it’s not a poor outing, but it’s not the success you are making it out to be.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

All these stats being thrown around without context need to stop.

You know very well hits #2 and #3 were set up thanks to an error “hit” that Matsui horribly misplayed. And those double plays have killed any chance the Yankees have had at pushing out the lead at all.

  258. Cuso says:

Someone shove that bow and arrow up Rodney’s a$$ in the 9th inning.

  259. DERP says:

I so miss Joba. Baseball is much better with the fat man.

  260. Frank says:

Three innings Yanks had runners on first, second with 1 out and each time they hit into DP.

  261. Will The Thrill says:

Fuck trading for pitching! We need someone whose balls don’t shrink back into their bodies when they go to the plate with men on base.

  262. TomH says:

Not really worth checking in here in order to read that twit’s many comments.

  263. DERP says:

How hard is it to strike a guy out once the count is 0-2? It can’t be that hard, can it?

  264. Pat D says:

Yep, like I said yesterday, the Mix ‘N’ Match special.

  265. Dewayne is Wise says:

Is girardi going to use the whole pen tonight?
    Wise better start throwing huh.

  266. Robinson Tilapia says:

Eppley to Qualls in the 9th. If you’re a troll, have we got a treat for you tonight.

    • Greg says:

      Um that was Rapada.

By the way, by looking at the idiocy that some people are saying on here, (not by you), do you understand why I am a negative person?

  267. DERP says:

How the fuck is Qualls’ hat already dirty?

  268. christopher says:

It seems to me RISP Fail is a pretty weak stat. I’m surprised it’s such a big deal on this board.

  269. Will The Thrill says:

I hope the Rays slide out of it really bad after the All Star break so when we play these games later this season it won’t be as bad because we’ll be 10 games up.

  270. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

So will this count as a Qualls-ity start?

  271. Will The Thrill says:

I’m expecting Qualls to be only marginally better than Wade was this season. So… I’m not expecting much.

  272. christopher says:

    Nice, welcome to the club.

  273. Brian S. says:

Well we have been hitting Shields well so far so there is that.

  274. christopher says:

    Okay.

  275. DERP says:

    Qualls > Robertson

    Someone had to say it.

  276. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Qualls nice start.

  277. Greg says:

In my view this was the swing game of this particular series, with us winning tomorrow and the Rays winning on Wednesday.

Of Course we can still get our key 4 wins this week, it just gets a bit harder. And of course this game isn’t over yet

  278. Kramerica Industries says:

    Lovely, this asshole.

Give him his 2 BS and L, please. His success has been beyond nauseating this year.

    • Will The Thrill says:

I don’t know how after being horrendous for his whole career he magically becomes dominant.

      • Pat D says:

        Duh, steroids.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        Not that anyone will care…

I was reading a blurb in the local Times back during spring training about Rodney, and I mentioned as an aside to a couple buddies of mine about how Rodney was guaranteed to have a fantastic season, because that’s the Rays way. I mean, just look at Kyle Farnsworth last season.

Rodney had a sub-1 K/BB ratio last year. He was certifiably awful.

Somehow, that prophecy also came true. I hate myself for that.

        • Greg says:

          Joaquin Benoit too

          • Kramerica Industries says:

Benoit was a very good reliever in Texas – the concern was (justifiably) his shoulder.

I feel like he could’ve had that season with most teams.

Fernando Rodney is a career schmuck. Frustrating.

      • eephus_pitch says:

Even a lousy relief pitcher can have one good season. It’s not uncommon. Frustrating, for sure, but not unprecedented.

  279. Will The Thrill says:

Of course Joe West is giving the inner part of the plate to Rodney.

  280. DERP says:

So Ibanez, Chavez, and Martin. Could be worse

  281. Pat D says:

That guy needs to be shot for two reasons.

1, the position of his hat. 2, whatever the fuck that shit was on his face.

  282. christopher says:

    Nasty change-up.

  283. Pat D says:

    Raul Chavez, Kenny?

  284. Kramerica Industries says:

    God.

Rodney can just go fuck himself.

  285. Greg says:

See the key to Rodney is that you have to sit on the changeup, Chavez is an idiot.

    • Tom says:

      Sit on the changeup?

The guy throws 95-96mph and your suggestion is to sit on the changeup.

      Wow, just wow….

  286. christopher says:

Omph. Pitcher in the zone. Guys guessing.

  287. DERP says:

I feel like Mike has the tweet already written out in case Wise does something good here.

  288. Cuso says:

That first pitch was a fuhghnjjning ball!!

  289. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Espn talking about the brilliance of maddon in this game. Nope just Yankees pitchers letting scrubs get walks and big hits

  290. Athenian says:

should never have lost this one

  291. christopher says:

Damn, it’s an adventure hitting against this guy.

  292. Robinson Tilapia says:

Fernando Rodney looks like a guy who yells that I’m the white devil at me in front of the Herald Square station.

  293. DERP says:

    Thanks Robertson!

  294. Pat D says:

Fucking sigh. Another one that got away.

  295. Cy Pettitte says:

The only time this team loses is when they beat themselves.

  296. Karl Krawfid says:

What a choke of a game by these Yankees.

  297. captain kiwi says:

    urgh…

  298. Greg says:

    I blame David Robertson.

You cant blame Girardi, you cant blame the offense when they give you lead in the late innings.

    • captain kiwi says:

i only sorta blame robertson. that tex error is what really sticks out to me. at least at that point it’s only a tie game. but channeling some buckner, that’s… just ouch.

      • Betty Lizard says:

That’s the one that hurt for me. And poor Tex.

        • captain kiwi says:

yep. i saw him pull the unassisted dp earlier and i just thought “what a friggin’ beast.” and then a few innings later comes the ground ball slip. just one of those nights i guess.

  299. wow says:

    such BS…

  300. Will The Thrill says:

Yankees playing like shit against the AL East. What else is new?

    • Greg says:

Support your claim please or just go away.

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

They’re 11-12 against 4 teams that are at least .500. Not really playing like shit, and not really a big deal.

    • DERP says:

You being a terrible poster. That’s not new actually.

    • Need Pitching says:

      11-11
considering every team in the division is above .500, not really suprising

    • Athenian says:

Um I will just say that I don’t get baseball because I live in another country. But if I were to look at the standings, as I just did, and saw that the Yankees played most of their division early in the season when teams like Toronto, Baltimore and even the Rays were HOT, while the Yankees were trying to find their footing. It would mean that your claim is just wrong.

Again using your logic, the Rays then, should be in first place up by at least 10 games since they hold the best record against the AL East. Of course they struggle against the might top talent Central and NL teams.

Conclusion: Is this really George W. Bush trolling?

  301. TommyBoy says:

    That was quick as hell!

  302. flamingo says:

This wasn’t a very fun loss.

  303. Kramerica Industries says:

I hate Rays losses even more than Red Sox losses.

I know Fernando and Pena love to take a quick gloating of the standings when the Rays move into first place. Well, assholes, look at the standings right now with your fucking arrow shot.

I’m waiting for when the real Fernando Rodney shows up again. Probably not until after the Rays let him walk this off-season.

  304. eephus_pitch says:

I just discovered my new least-favorite pitcher celebration routine.

  305. Robinson Tilapia says:

Eerily reminds me of the Nova game last week, which was another game I forced myself to forget right after it ended.

    Trolls, this one’s for you.

  306. Athenian says:

Can’t win at the Trop. Yikes. No worries they will come away with one win this series. The weaker part of the Rays pitching staff goes the next two games.

  307. christopher says:

Monday night at The Trop. Glad it’s over.

  308. TommyBoy says:

Since the Yankees are sending Guys down left and right, might want to think about sending Robertson back down. He’s been awful since May!

  309. DERP says:

All that was missing tonight was Rapada throwing the ball into centerfield

  310. Kramerica Industries says:

So, to recap: Sean Rodriguez, Brooks Conrad, and Elliot Johnson beat the Yankees tonight.

    God.

Fuck that team, fuck this game, and fuck that ballpark. I’m gonna need to find something to get rid of my edge, because it’s just building up right now.

    Motherfuckers.

And with Shields and Price on tap…

    • Will The Thrill says:

Yankees always screw themselves in these games. It’s always different crappy players but it happens every year. This year it’ll be Sean Rodriguez next year it’ll be Jerry Hairston Jr. It seem like the Yankees don’t bring their A game when playing against the Rays and Red Sox.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

Overall, they do well enough against the Red Sox.

And, generally, they do well enough against the Rays.

Those are both good teams – you won’t win 12 of 18 every year against them.

These Trop issues are relatively new. But they are sure as fuck annoying.

  311. stuart a says:

manufacturing 4 runs or more for the Yanks in a game almost impossible…

good news Arod hit the ball to the warning track and had a almost homer..

I expect big things from him !!!!He is just missing,. If he really gets hot he may get 85 rbi’s if he goes en fuego….

tex , when you cannot hit you most field your position.

    last years Robertson is gone..

last 2 of 3 that they lost were giveaways from the pen and defense late…..

  312. DERP says:

We lost a game we should have won. It’s not the end of the world. Stop trying to overthink it.

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

      Exactly.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

      I apologize on my behalf.

But you try living in this hell-hole of a market. Even you would probably grow to have just as strong a hatred for the Rays as you would the Red Sox.

I mean, the biggest reason I was glad for The Collapse 2011 was because I still believed until Nolan Reimold crossed the plate that the Red Sox were a good enough team that, if they just got in, they could still have enough ammo to win the World Series. Their offense was still there, and the staff would be consolidated in a playoff series. They could run-n-gun with a team like Texas.

The Rays stood no chance of winning anything of merit in the playoffs, by contrast.

But, given their ridiculous luck this year (six wins where they trailed entering the 9th inning or later – only one loss) and them turning another miracle story out of a career schmuck like Fernando Rodney…

Rays fans are like dealing with thousands of stuart a’s.

      • eephus_pitch says:

No one deserves that. One is bad enough.
Oh, well. At least he only shows up some of the times, AKA “losses.” He’s whatever the opposite of a frontrunner is.

  313. Betty Lizard says:

Just skimming through, this does not seem like a happy thread.
I’ll be in my “office,” a/k/a the hot tub. Hold my calls.

  314. pistol pete says:

Tough game, rarely does Tex cost us a game in the field, but that’s baseball.
