Game 79: The Trop

By

Just as charming inside as it is outside. (AP Photo/Chris O’Meara)

The Yankees haven’t won a game at Tropicana Field in almost a year now. Their last win there was this combined shutout last July 20th, but they’ve since lost seven straight in their home away from home. Three of those games were the final series of last season, when the Yankees had no interest in winning and were more concerned with getting healthy and lining up the playoff rotation. Enabling the Rays to complete their end of The Collapse was just icing on the cake. The last three games of this seven-game winless streak were the first three games of this season, which featured a walk-off loss in the opener, a one-run loss in the second game, and a blowout loss in the finale. The Rays are reeling right now and it would be nice to get back into that Trop win column. Here’s the lineup…

DH Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
RF Nick Swisher
LF Andruw Jones
SS Jayson Nix
Chris Stewart

RHP Freddy Garcia

Coincidentally enough, Garcia was the starter the last time the Yankees won a game in this building. Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

Raul Ibanez Update: Ibanez (face) had to get stitches in his lip after smashing his face into the bench trying to avoid a foul ball yesterday. He passed a concussion test, has been cleared to play, and has rejoined the team in Tampa. Short version: he’s fine, just looks a little beat up.

I bet Jeter is happy to face a lefty. Maybe now he can stop OPSing below .600.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Startin’ out strong, Brian!

  • Greg

AS I said in the preview, we need to win at least 4 games this week in total to feel okay, in any combination

    • Robinson Tilapia

“We need to win at least 4 games for Greg to feel……ah, who are we kidding….”

  • Will The Thrill

This better not be a Rays series where I feel like pulling out my hair.

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

As soon as I see that shift I want to kick babies.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

Since I no longer work for Tropicana, I can finally reveal ….. I hate The Trop!

  • Brian S.

We should DL Ibanez just to be on the safe side. And call up a player that doesn’t suck.

    • Will The Thrill

Negatory. All of our minor league players that don’t suck are in A ball. Our upper minors suck therefore anyone we bring up would suck.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

    I like Stew catching Freddy.

  • Greg

Well, its either Chris Berman or Ken Singleton

    • Greg

Usually easy, but Flaherty and Lou even up the board

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m saying this before the game, any and all mistakes made by Chris Stewart where at the instruction of one Derek Jeter. Anybody to insult Chris Stewart for these mistakes will also be insulting Derek by extension.

  • Tony

I can’t believe I have to listen to Chris Berman and Rick Suttcliff tonight. Those two combined with at least 6 hits robbed by the shift should make me want to punch myself

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      better than Ma and Pa.

    • Kramerica Industries

I would love to listen to Boomer.

The biggest reason I hate Rays/Yankees games is that I can never listen to the YES telecasts. Blackout restrictions, so always Dwayne Staats and Brian Anderson. And while I find Anderson tolerable, I always appreciate Kay and Co. more once I’m able to listen to them again.

Honestly, as much as we tend to bash them, YES telecasts are much more professional than many others I listen to on a (semi)-regular basis.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’d love to know why John and Suzyn think you can “throw the numbers (of Freddy Garcia) out the window” and they “have a feeling he’s going to be great.”

    • RI$P FTW

So now you’re trying to correct people’s feelings?

      • Robinson Tilapia

Plouffenator is a master of cognitive-behavioral therapy.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Why do you hate me so?

  • Hummingbird S.

I have a good feeling against Moore tonight.. offense is going good right now.

    • RI$P FTW

This is a court of law! Feeling aren’t allowed!

    Welcome to 1984 everybody =/

    • bobtaco

Actually, that would make it 1986 now, as that article is two years old.

    • Robinson Tilapia

X-ray shot of some couple screwing in the backseat: Priceless.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

The Rays should be humiliated that they can never even get decent sized crowds with the help of 15,000 Yankee fans.

  • Hummingbird S.

Can anyone explain the logic behind A-Rod hitting 4th and Cano 5th? Moore sucks against lefty batters and A-Rod is not good against lefty pitching.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Teh lefty/righty splits.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

.921 OPS vs lefties this year.

    • Need Pitching

Cano vs. LHP this year – 218/265/355
ARod vs. LHP this year – 271/393/529

I have no idea why Tex is batting third, though.

  • Dewayne is Wise

Tropicana dome the worst stadium in baseball like playing in a wharehouse. As bad as …….the Kingdump.

    • Dewayne is Wise

      First dome run tonight.

  • Greg

Well that stint under .300 didn’t last long

  • Robinson Tilapia

Brian, I think Jeter just mouthed “suck my nuts” at you. I’m not sure. Maybe it’s the glare of the dome.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Let’s cut these fuckers. Go Nova!

    • Greg

      Huh?

      • Robinson Tilapia

I was suggesting that the Yankees actually stab members of the Tampa Bay Rays tonight, Greg.

        • Greg

Go Nova was the problem. He ain’t pitching

          • Robinson Tilapia

            HAHAHAHAHA!

            Go, um, Freddy.

            *hides*

            • Steve

Yeah, you kind of look like a dick now.

          • Jimmy

But you were ok with the part about the Yankee players shanking the Rays?

            • Robinson Tilapia

Not Matsui, though. The wife would leave me.

  • Greg

    Oh Matsui

  • Kramerica Industries

    Well, thanks Matsui.

That’s why he should never play the field. Again. Ever.

  • Hummingbird S.

    more hits to LF, please!!!

    ps. poor hideki

    • Hummingbird S.

      I mean RF!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

The Rays play the game the right way. Including putting Matsui in the field.

  • TCMiller30

    HIDEKI!! Haha

  • Robinson Tilapia

Matsui should now pull off his shirt in order to reveal a Yankee jersey. NWO 4 Life.

    • Dewayne is Wise

      I loled

    • Countryclub

      Haha

    • Kramerica Industries

That just reminds me of an awful commercial that was locally produced in, I wanna say 2008?, with a “Yankees” fan doing a “lets go Yankees” chant in the ticket line, only for an assclown to come up, criticize his ass for being a Yankee fan in TB, and then revealed that he had a golden Rays shirt underneath his Yankee gear.

      1) Like that would ever happen

      2) Steve Deumig is a stuck-up, narrow-minded asshole

      3) Red Sox fans are much, much worse, and there’s actually a lot more of a rivalry with those two than the Yankees and Rays (with which the Rays can only blame themselves – we were only one game from seeing a Yankees/Rays ALCS in 2010, but then they got Cliff Lee’d).

    • Erica

      Trolololololo

  • Hummingbird S.

    Comon Robbie, no DP please

  • Greg

    3 for 4 with RISP

  • Tom

Berman + Sutcliffe doing the ESPN game… ugh….

And for some reason they really like that camera shot from behind the catcher.

    • Kev

Seriously annoying camera angle – especially since they like to use once per batter. “It’s okay ESPN, we really didn’t care to see pitch location or anything like that.”

  • Kramerica Industries

Robbie RISP has been in correction for a week or so now.

  • Hummingbird S.

damn, they arent missing anythign right now

  • Dela G

    loving this inning so far

  • Dewayne is Wise

Wow was the whole team on the mound?
    They should hold his hand.

  • Will (the other one)

Great to see some first-inning support for the Big Sweat here. If only the mostly-worthless Curtis Granderson hadn’t grounded out, we could really have something special going…

    • Greg

It was a productive out though because it moved Jeter to third.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Let’s get some pre-sweaty runs here!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Hell of a start :)

  • BK2ATL

Poor Hideki. Cashman looks more and more like a genius the more these guys (Matsui and Damon) keep playing. At this stage, they’re only DHs.

    Cano continues the hot streak!!!

  • Greg

Still a very good inning. 3-5 with RISP

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

God damnit…Hopefully we continue hitting the ball like that and Moore doesn’t settle down.

    • Greg

Remember though, this Rays team is not good offensively.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m a good offensive player against Freddy Garcia.

      • Hummingbird S.

Remember though, we have Freddy Garcia pitching.

        • Greg

          Even against Freddy Garcia.

  • Hummingbird S.

that was a good start.. let’s hope Freddy still has something left

  • Tom

By the way lefties are hitting with a ~.900OPS against Moore, righties ~.700

Given his 2nd best pitch is a change and his curve has been poor, I’m not sure this is a guy you load up righties against.

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Gin. Tamarind juice. Soda.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m a much simpler man. Give me some aged single malt scotch, neat or on the rocks, and I’m happy.

      • Robinson Tilapia

A bottle of good scotch has been on my “to buy” list for a few weeks now.

    • Tom

Coffee for me…. this could be a long night! (plus I’m on the left coast so it’s still early for me)

  • Kramerica Industries

    I love this pitching matchup.

Dime a dozen slop-throwing righty vs. million dollar armed lefty

    Couldn’t be more different.

  • Greg

Oh Curtis don’t do that again

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

RI$P FTW, why do you hate me so?

  • Erica

    SWISHER

    Swish!!!

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

    I guess it’s garbage time…

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yay, Swish, good job making up for the DP.

  • Hummingbird S.

it’s gonna be a long night with Freddy and his pitches up in the zone.. at least the D seems to be working..

  • Kramerica Industries

Never thought I’d see the day in Tropicana Field where the Yankees had such a defensive advantage in an OF position.

  • Tom

That ain’t Matsui out there for NY!

  • Greg

One good thing about Berman is that we know is not going to be anti-Yankee like McDonough.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

They just used the Gardner WCBS radio spot…I miss him so much lol.

  • Greg

    Scott Hairston please

    • Scott Hairston

      This is Scott speaking.

  • Hummingbird S.

    nice stewart hit from stewart

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Chris Stewart with another clutchy single of a glove.

    • Pat D

Ted was funny. If you like McFarlane’s stuff, you’ll like the movie, plain and simple.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Cool, I think my friends and I are going to try again this weekend.

  • Tom

Is it too early to pinch run for Stewart or do we need to keep that potent bat in the lineup? :-)

  • Brian S.

John Sickels published his top 120 prospect list today. Do people like Sickels here?

    • Brian S.

Also at the bottom in the comments it looks like a Yankees fan is getting attacked by a Red Sox fan. Someone must do something about this!

    • Ethan

      link?

  • swishers fauxhawk

    Nooo Hideki

  • Greg

I dont know why Keppinger wasn’t out there in the first place. He’s been on fire

  • Erica

Is it weird that I was a little sad when Matsui didn’t catch that ball that wound up scoring Jeter? Just because, y’know, it’s Matsui…ergh. FEELINGS.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I feel sorry for him too. He should NOT be playing on turf with his knees.

      • Erica

Yup, and look what happened :( I hope he’ll be okay.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I just wish Matsui would’ve taken our feelings into account and either stayed on the west coast or retired :(

      • Erica

He really needs to log onto RAB, doesn’t he?

        • Hideki Matsui

          Tu eres bella

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

            I’m watching you Hideki.

          • Erica

            Oh haiiiiii there

  • Tom

Not sure how many are watching the ESPN broadcast, but does anyone else find the behind the catcher camera shot a complete waste during live action?

    • Hummingbird S.

      it is awful

    • Ethan

They sometimes do it on yes too. During a pitch right? I absolutely hate it.

      • Tom

Yeah…. I don’t mind it on replays, but when it’s live you have no idea where the pitch is (unless it is way out of the zone, and if it’s put inplay you often also have no idea where it went.

  • Hummingbird S.

another pitch up in the zone, another hard hit ball.. Freddy should not be starting games for a team like the Yankees..

    • Greg

Well we dont really have a choice right now

      • Hummingbird S.

Unfortunately. I just hope he is the one cut when CC comes back. He has nothing left.

    • Tom

      Was it hit that hard?

Berman on ESPN was channeling his inner Kay but that was what a 320 flyball?

      • Hummingbird S.

Jennings hit the ball hard, Pena just missed a hanging breaking ball, Keppinger hit the ball hard and now this one to Teix. Also, Zobrist hit the ball fairly deep.

    • Brian S.

      Freddy is getting crushed.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Yanks up 2-0, losing in style points 189-3.

  • Pat D

Well, Mike did say Hideki is likely to get the Ol’ Yeller treatment…

    So sad.

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

we will all grow old, we will all get sick, we will all die.
      /Buddah’d

  • Will The Thrill

Ben Zobrist always seems to have epic at bats when playing against the Yankees.

  • Kramerica Industries

Jeez, Zobrist was getting some really good swings in there.

    Tex.

  • Greg

    MARK!

  • Need Pitching

Freddy playing with fire so far.

    • Greg

Remember Nova’s start when balls were being hit hard all over the place. (make your own innuendo). He made it just fine

      • Hummingbird S.

Some balls were hit hard. Everything has been hit hard tonight. Also, Nova >>> Freddy.

      • Need Pitching

        True, but Nova>>>Freddy.
I’m fine with the fire, as long as he doesn’t get burned too badly.

      • Brian S.

Nova also gets groundballs and strikeouts.

      • JobaWockeeZ

Except Nova doesn’t avoid that every start and Freddy is worse than nova.

    • Pat D

      This is a scientific fact.

    • Erica

This, purely for the principle, should be the longest game he’s ever had to stand behind the plate for.

    • flamingo

I’ve come to realize that when I recognize an umpire’s name, that umpire is a terrible umpire.

  • Erica

    Left hamstring tightness for Hideki.

Completely OT, but in case you were wondering:

I hope the person who made that site feels it was money well spent.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Love it. I think they should though.

  • Will The Thrill

You can tell that Moore is pitching around the righties to get to the lefties. Punk.

  • Erica

    FUUUUU.

  • ArchStanton

Aaron Boone just said “that little cock in his hands.”

    • ArchStanton

He was trying to describe the way Cano swings, that “he cocks his hands” but it came out all wrong…. He had a pause between cock and the rest of it.

  • Greg

So we’re even on that account

  • Hummingbird S.

    fuck… tough luck there.

  • Brian S.

    Dammit.

  • Greg

Love Kay’s face in that Sheen ad

    • Robinson Tilapia

You know that Centerstage is going to be all bark and no bite. Sheen’s totally trying to rehab his image a bit now.

  • Will The Thrill

Cano lines out to pitcher for double play. #ShitThatHappensInRaysSeries

    • Greg

Well remember Luke Scott lined out to Tex for a double play so now we’re even

    • eephus_pitch

According to Flaherty, this was all because of the pitching coach’s instruction.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

“Get him to hit the ball hard at someone. It’s worked for Garcia”

        • eephus_pitch

“Throw a fastball right down the middle to the player of the month. He’ll probably hit it right to your glove. It never fails.”

  • eephus_pitch

According to this Wendy’s commercial, it’s better to eat at a fast food restaurant than to buy your groceries at the supermarket.
    That… that takes balls.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Oh Wendy’s you’re lucky you’re delicious.

      • eephus_pitch

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Wendy’s. I just think it’s pretty cheeky to discourage people from buying actual groceries.

        • Pat D

I think they were implying that those pre-made salads in grocery stores aren’t really fresh.

They should be targeting convenience stores if that’s the case then.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s just straight dumb. But you know what? if people believe it, that’s on them.

Well you know what Hitler said…

            • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

              Kill all the Jews?

              • Pat D

                Uh, no.

                • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Was that Hitler? Sorry I stopped listening to things said by Hitler after he started with the killing people for religious belief thing.

      • Brian S.

The girl in the Wendy’s commercial is hot so I’m okay with it.

  • Will The Thrill

Meredith Marakovitz is so hot. Young teacher hot.

    • eephus_pitch

Very true. Still no Kim Jones, though.

      • Brian S.

I think she’s hotter than Kim Jones. I would do both of them though.

        • The Jetes

          Would you do me, Brian?

          • Brian S.

What do I get in the gift basket?

        • eephus_pitch

She’s better looking, but KJ had moxie.

          • Robinson Tilapia

She did have moxie. Meredith sitting uninterested in the dugout with the big sunglasses during OTD yesterday was every other chick walking down the street in Brooklyn.

I do get the feeling YES really likes Meredith, though. She gets a ton of airtime, has her own commercial, etc. Good for her.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

She just started doing the live third inning updates. I guess they didn’t want her doing live TV right out of the chute.

            • Erica

It bothered me, too, to see Meredith sitting there with a “too cool for this” air about her.

I get it, you have to be professional and keep your composure but look at the legends around you! LOOK at them! Show that you at least take some interest in your job! I’m pretty sure nobody held a gun to her head and forced her to work for YES.

Okay. I just really don’t like her.

              • Pat D

She used to cover the 76ers and the Iron Pigs. It’s understandable.

                • Erica

                  *sarcastic eye roll*

                  I’ll take her job!!!! Womp.

                  • Pat D

I mean that she used to cover people who don’t matter, so she probably just hasn’t realized what covering the Yankees fully means yet.

                    • Erica

Hmmmmmm. Solid point. Solid, solid point.

            • Pat D

She’s from my area, so I root for her.

              • Robinson Tilapia

I actually do like her. The dugout thing yesterday was strange but, in the end, what really are you supposed to do in that situation, I guess.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

          +1

    • Brian S.

      +1

    • Robinson Tilapia

      She grows on you.

      • eephus_pitch

She’s foxy, but her delivery is weird. Like she just arrived here yesterday from the planet of Gigantic women, and is still learning English.

        • Erica

YES. I can’t listen to her. It’s as though she is talking out of her nose.

          • Betty Lizard

            Can not stand her.

    • RI$P FTW

Are we allowed to talk about this????

      • BK2ATL

        Don’t ask. Just do it.

  • Pat D

Seeing Will Rhymes stand next to George Hendrick is pretty funny.

It reminds me of Bobby Meacham standing next to Dave Winfield.

  • Kramerica Industries

Ok, so Sun Sports trivia was “which four active players have three or more consecutive seasons of 20 HR and .300 BA”.

Answers not revealed yet, but my guesses would have to be Cano (obviously), Miguel Cabrera, Justin Upton, and Matt Kemp.

I’m not going to look up those other three to see if I’m right. They seem as likely as anything, to me.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Hamilton on the list.

      • Kramerica Industries

His 2009 was pretty awful, now that I think of it, but I feared his BA won’t register well enough.

Should find out in a minute or two.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So what’s the answer, I’m curious.

          • Kramerica Industries

Finally revealed them (as I noted below)

            AL: Cano and Miggy
            NL: Votto and Braun

  • Hummingbird S.

they are having some nice ABs against Moore so far..

  • BK2ATL

Look at Jayson Nix. Base hits and stolen bases out of the 9 hole. Who knew?

  • Greg

    Still no RISP fail 3-7

  • Brian S.

No, Lou Pinella, Stewart is not doing a good job with the bat.

    • Greg

      Meh. .270 batting average.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The emptiest .270 in baseball history.

      • Pat D

With about a .285 OBP, right?

      • Tom

Might want to look at something other than avg…

A sub .600 OPS is barely AAA level quality.

    • eephus_pitch

Lou’s old school. Guys like him are easily impressed with terrible baseball players.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So you could group him in with John and Suzyn who love Nix and think that Freddy is great? and don’t even get them started on guys like Miguel Cairo.

        • eephus_pitch

Freddy’s probably a special case for them, because at one time he was a very good pitcher with great stuff. Unlike Miguel Cairo, who’s never been good in any way, Freddy had real talent.
Of course, Ma and Pa like him better now that he has to get by with grit and intestinal fortitude.

      • what

So you know more about baseball than Lou Pinella?

        • eephus_pitch

Just because the guy was a good player doesn’t mean he knows what he’s talking about in terms of player evaluation. Ever heard of Joe Morgan?
Anyone who thinks Chris Stewart has done a good job with the bat doesn’t deserve to be taken seriously.

  • Pat D

Murcer, Lyle and Munson is the trivia answer. I feel so special because I knew it before I looked it up.

Or…rather, I correctly guessed it before looking it up.

  • Tom

Whil I think Moore will be good in time, media folks have greatly exaggerated his command and polish.

He’s missing with his fastball a lot, leaving changeups up (though it looks like he has good action on it), and his curve is not nearly as good as advertised.

Basically issues that most rookie pitchers have, it’s just that people made is sound like was a far more polished pitcher (I think that is the default assumption for any Rays pitcher)

    • http://www.yankeeanalysts.com Mike E

He never had great command in the minors, which I think becomes a big problem with the patient bats in the AL East. He’s only 23 though, so there’s plenty of upside. Moore is a great pitcher, but the media over hypes all of the Ray’s pitching prospects, so there’s really no surprise here.

  • Erica

    #toomanyhomeruns

    Oh. Wrong team.

  • Kramerica Industries

It’s about time Garcia got burned on one of his meatballs.

  • Greg

    Took ‘em long enough

  • Brian S.

    Why didn’t Cano take Ortiz?

    • Pat D

I heard him announce the team on SportsCenter. He said he asked Ortiz, but Ortiz said he’d rather rest this time.

    • BK2ATL

Ortiz declined. Wanted to rest. Can’t blame him.

    • Need Pitching

      Ortiz declined his invitation

      • Brian S.

I hope Cano loses in the first round. He doesn’t need to take another 100 swings. He didn’t hit a home run after the break for like three weeks after that shit.

        • Pat D

He hit one on July 19, but then not another until August 3.

      • eephus_pitch

I think he was expecting a delivery of protein shakes.

    • Tom

I think he said he declined and wanted the rest.

  • Pat D

Time for the offense to get a few more.

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Let me guess: It’s over.

    • BK2ATL

Here they come. Get the count ready.

      • Robinson Tilapia

I only did the count that one night and it backfired when about ten separate counts broke out. I have not been responsible for any counts since. In other words, you first. :)

        • Pat D

          And I was counted.

I shall not forget this slight!!

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Neither will the rest of us, we’re keeping a very close tabs on you Trolly McTrollson.

            • Pat D

I’d consider changing my handle to that, but it’s not my own creation, so I don’t feel it’s appropriate.

              • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’ll allow you to use it :)

        • Erica

Oh yeah. What’s the deal with this counting thing???

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

One night Robinson and Greg tried counting the trolls after the Yankees lost the lead(I think it was the opener of the ChiSox series) and it just spiraled into madness.

            • Erica

              Oh.

          • eephus_pitch

            It’s really annoying, that’s what.

          • Robinson Tilapia

The night Rapada and D-Rob blew the game, I made a crack as to the number of trolls who’d suddenly appear before the end of the day and started counting them. About three other guys joined in different counts to the point that I even thought it got pretty obnoxious. It’s been brought back since, but not by me.

Poor Pat D. wound up as collateral damage in the process.

            • Erica

Hahahaha. Wonderful. One can never have an accurate count of trolls because they’ll keep multiplying too rapidly for anyone to keep up with!

        • BK2ATL

Nah thx. Got better stuff to do with my time. Plus too many to count, esp. if Fredy givs up another run. Then out from the woodworks, they appear. LOL!!!

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Wait…where are they?!

  • Will The Thrill

Why did I know BJ Upton would be swinging first pitch and that it would be a home run? Argh.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Cause Upton is a very good baseball player?

      • Kramerica Industries

Upton is having a miserable season.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He’s still a good player though. I’d love for the Yankees to sign him this offseason, especially if he’s having a bad year, maybe they can sign him for less.

        • eephus_pitch

He’s still going to destroy a first-pitch BP fastball.

          • Kramerica Industries

            Anyone will.

At least, anyone worth their salt.

      • Hummingbird S.

I think that homer had a lot more to do with Freddy being awful than Upton being a very good player. After all, he has a career 103 OPS+ according to b-ref, so basically a tiny bit above average.

  • eephus_pitch

    Stupid train whistle.

  • Mr. Pink

    Dear Offense,

Please wake up and score many runs this series and next.

    • eephus_pitch

      Why stop there?

  • BK2ATL

I would LOVE for Fredy to give us 5 innings and keep us in the lead. Begging for more right now, is asking to get burned. He hasn’t thrown this many pitches in a while.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Damn.

    Cano and Cabrera, yes.

Joey Votto and Ryan Braun, not Justin Upton and Matt Kemp.

Surprised I forgot those names during the thought process.

  • eephus_pitch

Jeter getting trigger-happy there. This pitcher’s not sharp and he’s been nibbling. Take a couple.

  • Will The Thrill

Matt Moore looking locked in. Grreeattttt…

    • Robinson Tilapia

      It’s too bad we’re losing.

  • Brian S.

    Kranderson.

  • Greg

This is probably going to be Freddy’s last inning because he’s at 52 pitches and Joe said he would go 65-70.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If Freddy can get 3-6 more outs with out getting burned again…I’ll be more than happy.

  • Pat D

I’m glad Luke Scott grew those mutton chops to make me hate and despise him even more than I already did.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Luke Scott deserves a heart punch.

      • Pat D

        Who’s throwing it?

Mean Mark Callous, Crush (RIP), or The Big Show?

Did I forget anyone else who used it as a finishing move?

        • Robinson Tilapia

The master of the heart punch, Ox Baker. Look it up.

          • Pat D

Anyone who teamed with Skandor Akbar is cool with me.

Why had I never heard of him? I’m so ashamed.

            • Robinson Tilapia

70′s and 80′s territorial guys who never wrestled for Vince or Crockett have been forgotten.

              • Pat D

At least Vince kinda sorta acknowledges WCW/JCP, AWA, ECW, WCCW and Championship Wrestling from Florida.

I value those historical DVD releases because they contain a lot of interesting stuff. And I like to point out what they leave out.

                • Robinson Tilapia

Yeah, because he bought out all the video collections after he bankrupted them.

20 years ago, they were debuting that spry youngster, Dusty Rhodes, on WWF TB.

    • Brian S.

I used to hate him until he insulted Boston fans. Now I only dislike him, mostly for his birther comments.

      • Pat D

Yea, I can’t forgive him for those.

        • Robinson Tilapia

It makes me want to say “don’t ruin my opinion of you as a baseball player by telling me your political POV,” but then I’d just be a hypocrite since, if some other player came out in support tomorrow of some progressive cause, I’d cheer him on.

          Life is complicated.

Then again, there’s political POV, and then there’s straight-out delusion…

          • Brian S.

I cheer for progressive athletes. As long as they don’t play for a team I hate. Example: Kyle Orton is apparently some huge lefty so I’ve always cheered for him even if he is kind of mediocre.

            • Robinson Tilapia

              Didn’t know that. Go Kyle.

          • Pat D

Yea, the funny things are that the Yankees are a pretty conservative organization, and we all know King George’s connections to Nixon, so…

            • Robinson Tilapia

….and the Fox Business Network commercials. Life ain’t perfect. What can I say.

              • Robinson Tilapia

Also, the point isn’t to avoid people who have different beliefs than yours. It’s to stay true to yours.

                • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This. I seek out people with different views than I so I can challenge their beliefs as well as have my beliefs challenged by them.

                • Pat D

At least they stopped the Judge Goombah ads.

              • Brian S.

And we had people on the team donate to Rudy Guliani. :/

  • Hummingbird S.

    nice pitch by Freddy there..

  • A Troll

    ….

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lol Suzyn Waldman just called out Martin as “flat out bad.”

    • Brian S.

We should trade for a catcher.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

        Who?

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I agree…there isn’t anybody that I really like except for the Montero in Arizona.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Pretty much.

I’m fine with Martin. Unless something fell in our laps, like Pudge did a few years ago, I’m fine with either Stewart or Cervelli as backup.

        • Brian S.

          Brian McCann. Buy low.

          • Need Pitching

Why is a contending team trading away their starting catcher?

            • Brian S.

Because they have that Ross guy!

              • Brian S.

TRADE FOR ROSS. Could you imagine a Ross and Russ platoon?

    • eephus_pitch

He probably doesn’t know enough Gilbert and Sullivan to suit her.

  • Will The Thrill

I’m starting to see why the sabremetrics don’t like Grandy in center. He’s got weak range and gets poor reads on balls. He’s not terrible but he’s no Mike Trout.

  • christopher

This has got be one of the more experienced booths in the game. All players, right?

  • Hummingbird S.

now is a great time for the offense to score some runs.

  • Need Pitching

    Very acceptable start by Freddy.

  • Greg

I knew Freddy would have an easy time with this lineup. Of course he got some help from the defense, but he handled himself okay.

The Red Sox lineup is another story

    • Pat D

I’m not expecting good things there, especially in Fenway, but stranger things have happened.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I didn’t even expect him to be this good against this line up. I’m petrified of how he’ll do in Boston.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Five innings. One run. Now that is the definition of doing what you were supposed to.

    C’mon, let’s sweat….baby! Let the music take control…

  • Frank

Nice job by Gracia. Hopefully, he can give Yanks 1 more inning before turning it over to the BP. A couple of runs would also be nice.

  • Greg

    SHIFT BEATEN

  • christopher

    Perfect infield hit by Robbie.

  • christopher

I like that, Lou -250 pitch outside +250 pitch inside.

  • Tom

Rick Sutcliffe and Berman analyzing the impact of the batting practice pitcher for the HR derby…. thank you ESPN for this crap!

I’d get it if it was a blow out but it’s the 5th inning in a 1 run game.

    • Pat D

ESPN is all about promoting their own shit.

I really resented having to watch all that Euro coverage when I couldn’t give two shits about fucking soccer. Especially after I read about the racist chants during some of the countries’ practice sessions. Really? I thought Europeans were supposed to be sophisticated. But then again, it was all in Eastern Europe where they’re barely out of the Iron Curtain, so…yea, they’re assclowns.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

New Yorkers and Bostonians are supposed to be more sophisticated than the rest of the country, Californians as well. Sophistication falls apart the second sports get involved.

        • Kramerica Industries

It’s not so much sophistication, as it is just self-entitled douchebaggery.

Just because we/they think they are more sophisticated, doesn’t mean they are.

  • Brian S.

I hate how Swisher has stopped drawing walks.

  • Greg

3-8 with RISP Still not technical failure

  • Hummingbird S.

    another rally wasted..

    • Greg

      But not RISPfail by definition

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What’s the definition and who decided what it would be?

        • Greg

I believe if you hit less than .250 (about league average with RISP)in a game it is considered RISP Failure.

At this rate, they are 4 misses away from getting to that point

        • Brian S.

It’s only RISP FAIL if it is at .200 or lower.

          • Pat D

It’s only RISP FAIL if RI$P FTW says it is.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Damn these double plays.

  • Brian S.

Would have been nice to get a run there…

  • Tom

Damn he hit that pretty well… Moore has cut an inning off his pitch count with 3 DP’s in 6 innings.

11 of 26 batters reach base and only 2 runs, that’s some good fortune for Mr Moore.

  • Will The Thrill

RISP Fail against the Rays/Red Sox = The Worst Kind of RISP Fail.

    • Greg

Its not RISPFail. 3-8 does not count.

If you hit less than .250 with RISP in a game, then it becomes RISP failure

      • Tom

1 of the 3 was more a Matsui failure than a hit.

        • Greg

Its ruled a base hit. THerefore its a base hit.

  • christopher

The field at theTrop looks like the worn out old couch I used to have in my college years apartment. I got that couch off the street one night and carried it with a friend into my place. Do you think they got the Trop field the same way?

  • eephus_pitch

    Harrumph

  • Pat D

Left him in too long comments to start.

    • eephus_pitch

That would be a fair analysis. No points for predicting that.

  • christopher

    Ouch, Freddy.

  • Kramerica Industries

Pena hitting a home run against the Yankees?

    Well, that’s a fucking shocker, isn’t it!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Joe G’s fault.

    • Greg

John Flaherty disagrees and so do I.

      HINDSIGHT

      • Karl Krawfid

Everything was up to finish the last inning.

Was already talked about on Twitter before he gave up the home run.

        Sorry buddy.

  • Cy Pettitte

can’t even describe how predictable that was. Garcia shouldn’t have been in still.

    • Greg

      1

    • BK2ATL

But people will hang it on Fredy.

  • flamingo

    Well.

  • Hummingbird S.

    most predictable shit ever…

  • BK2ATL

    Here they come.

  • Tom Q

Well, the way the Yanks were leaving men on, you just had the feeling something like that would happen.

Not that Girardi’s alternatives were stellar, but it felt like a mistake trying to squeeze one more out of Freddy.

    • Greg

      2

      • Tom Q

Go fuck yourself. You were saying two innings ago Freddy was coming up on his pitch limit. He passed it, and finished the 5th. It’s not trolling to say having him start another inning, in uncharted pitch count territory, was questionable.

You’re not the goddamn monitor here.

        • Greg

If the reasoning is sound (not wasting a member of the bullpen early on one batter) then I won’t question it

          • Tom Q

I said the alternatives were not stellar (reading comprehension; try it). Tossing out a number says “I dismiss your entire thought process”; it’s insulting bullshit, and beneath you.

  • Pat D

Oh, those clever Rays, always playing “Hey Joe” when Girardi makes a pitching change.

  • bonestock94

Oh god go to hell Chris Berman, why would they do this.

    • Pat D

      What did they do?

      • bonestock94

Have Chris Berman call a game

        • Pat D

Oh. It’s because he calls the HR Derby so he’s gotta get his voice back in check.

  • eephus_pitch

I hope Carlos Peña and Howie Kendrick never play together. Whatever team they’re on would score 10 runs a game versus the Yanks.

  • Will The Thrill

The offense letting us down like always. It was unrealistic to expect Freddy to shut them out.

    • Greg

      Not RISPFail

    • eephus_pitch

      “like always?”

      That’s nuts.

  • christopher

He left Freddy in until it was time to take ehim out. What else are you supposed to do? Cant mange any other way with the current state of the starter staff.

  • Need Pitching

    wtf was that ARod?

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Rapada should have been in to face Pena.

    • Greg

      3

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Stop counting. You can’t say you’d rather have Pena face Freddy than Rapada.

        • Greg

So you want to waste a member of an already close to overworked bullpen for one batter. That’s a good idea.

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

One batter. He is useless against righties, so why not use him against the Rays best LHB?

          • Andy

There are trolls, and then there are people who disagree with you. They aren’t the same

            • JobaWockeeZ

              A novel concept.

          • Need Pitching

That’s kind of a ridiculous statement
The bullpen has thrown a total of 3 innings over the past 2 games, and Freddy was pretty much already at his pitch count limit anyways.
And Rapada is a Loogy. One big lefty is how he is used. The Rays don’t have lefties stacked anywhere in their lineup.

  • Kramerica Industries

This “count” bullshit needs to stop, like, yesterday.

To basically copy a post of mine that I just made – it smacks of self-entitled douchebaggery.

    • Greg

Its deserved with people blaming Girardi willy nilly

      • Need Pitching

        that’s really not “willy nilly”
It’s a legitimate argument, that maybe a lefty would be better against Pena there instead of a tiring Freddy.

        • Greg

If there is some logic behind his reasoning for doing something, then I am not going to question it

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

Girardi’s logic will be “Freddy was throwing the ball well”

    • eephus_pitch

      It’s really obnoxious. Clique-y bullshit.

      • Pat D

        It’s all about The Kliq.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Go ahead run, bitches.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Replyfail.

It’s not clique-y, btw. It’s one friggin guy doing it. Even I don’t particularly like it, and I was the first one to do it.

          • eephus_pitch

I apologize, then. It just seems weird to me. Like people are saying only one kind of comment is allowed here, otherwise you’re branded a troll.

Of course there really are some total trolls (like that psychopath stuart) but I think it’s certainly fair to wonder whether Garcia was left in for too long. That’s not an especially trollish thing to say.
Personally I don’t see what could have been done differently. It’s OK to go batter-to-batter like that, especially when it seemed like he was getting guys out. The unfortunate downside of doing that is that it was only a one-run game. It only takes the one batter to change the complexion.

    • Tom

      +1

Especially when ironically someone who bascially only relies on hindsight to reply to others is doing the counting about people making comments based on hindsight.

    • JobaWockeeZ

I don’t know. I can easily ignore numbers instead of the paragraphs of death threats.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      I created a monster.

  • christopher

    Solid outing from Freddy.

  • christopher

    Yes. BIg DP.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Well, going to try to see Ted again, have tickets this time though. Hopefully we pull this out, I’ll be following via phone though.

  • flamingo

    NICE.

  • Will The Thrill

I think I dread Rays series as much as Mets fans dread the Subway Series.

  • Greg

Another problem for the Yankees is that they only have hit singles off of Moore. Only 2 doubles and they both scored

    • Will The Thrill

The lack of .300 hitters and hitters who hit extra base hits is what separates the Yankees from the offenses of the Rangers and Red Sox. I’m not saying the Yanks don’t have a good offense but the lack of doubles is alarming, especially from A-Rod and Tex.

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

        Homers >> doubles

        • Will The Thrill

Higher Average + Doubles > Low Average + Homer Happy Approach

          • Need Pitching

So by that definition, Tigers offense (4.38 r/g) is better than the Yankees offense (4.78 r/g)??

        • Rocky Road Redemption

          Gotta go with you, Will.

          • Rocky Road Redemption

Sorry, I mean Get Phelps. I disagree with Will. Sorry about that guys.

            *Shuffles off awkwardly*

      • Greg

I wouldn’t put the Sox on that list because their park is a doubles factory

      • Need Pitching

Yankees are second in AL in % of PA resulting in extra base hits.
        Red Sox 9.5%
        Yankees 8.9%
        Rangers 8.7%

        • Will The Thrill

I meant doubles/triples not XBH category (which include homers).

          • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

I would rather hit a homer than a double or triple.

          • Need Pitching

so if more of the Yankee HR’s instead hit the wall and went for doubles, their offense would be better?

  • Brian S.

    CHRIS STEWART 4 LYFE

  • Frank

    Nice AB for Stew.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Thank you Matt.

Try hitting into that GIDP now, Jeter!

  • Pat D

Ah ha, that time Jeter DID tell Stewart to go.

  • Frank

    Gotta get this guy in.

  • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen)

I blame Jeter for waving Stewart to 2nd.

  • Will The Thrill

    #stupidbunt

  • Tom

I’d rather just Jeter took a shot toward driving the ball to the right side

    • Greg

      Well he tried

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

“You don’t see Jeter bunt often.”

Has Lou ever watched a Yankees game?

  • christopher

Wow, I didn’t think that was far enough. Nice play, Jetes.

  • Greg

    Well done everyone

  • christopher

    Okay, solid fundamnetal ball.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    RISP success!

  • Frank

    Grandy good job.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Nice job with two strikes, Grandy. But I’m sure everyone will keep complaining about the strikeouts.

  • Will The Thrill

It feels like the Yankees always have to fight to score even one run against the Rays. Now I know how the Mariners feel. Haha.

  • Greg

So 3-9 with a sac fly and 2 productive outs (Grandy in the first, Jeter just now)

  • Ivan

They manufactured a run….there are you guys happy???

  • Tom

Probably would have scored anyway, but Jennings cost Upton any chance at making that play….

Run without a hit… Rays Yankees baseball! (while the Rays are over-reliant on the HR?)

  • Pat D

Moose Tacos saying “You should have taken me instead of Butler, you fucking idiot Washington! Why the hell did you take a 3rd DH instead of taking someone who could play the field?!?!?”

  • Kramerica Industries

    Eppley vs. Zobrist?

    Interesting……

    • Greg

I think Zobrist is a switch hitter

  • Pat D

I’m getting sick of Subway pushing avocado on us.

  • Andy

Eppley is an hero. 3 outs on 6 pitches

  • pistol pete

Why is Cano hitting 5th. He’s the hottest hitter in the game right now and one of the best players in baseball and Girardi still has him follow Grandy (vs a lefty), Tex, and Arod who’s not actually at his best lately. The guy baffles me with his book.

    • Will The Thrill

Seriously. Also A-Rod should be batting fifth until he shows some life and ability to hit more than just singles.

    • Need Pitching

Cano has awful numbers vs. LHP this year, but I agree, as hot as he has been, he shouldn’t be dropped, especially since Tex has done nothing to deserve being moved up in the lineup.

  • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia’s 86 mph Heat)

If someone caught that after it bounced down would it be an out?

My God the Trop is shit.

    • Pat D

And as Jim Caple said last week, to think that a few teams used this stadium to blackmail their cities into giving them new stadium deals.

      • Kramerica Industries

That’s part of the reason why the stadium was a dilapidated hell hole before the Rays even played their first game there.

It was already 10 years old and needed renovations to make it playable.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Just awful.

    • Kramerica Industries

I remember a game two years ago where something hit off from high, in fair territory, landed, and was a hit.

I’m pretty sure it has to stay in fair territory.

Either way, you’re main point stands.

  • Kramerica Industries

Walking Sean Rodriguez after a 1-2 count.

That just can’t happen. He’s an awful, awful hitter.

    • Widget

He’s even more awful than that.

      • Kramerica Industries

        Awful to the third power?

        I like it!

  • Tom

I’m not sure if he’ll do it, but at some point Girardi might want to get Roberston up for a 4 out appearance (if they get to 2 outw and have a righty up)

Getting a win with Garcia starting would be a big lift

  • Karl Krawfid

This is the Boone Logan we know and love right here folks.

  • Need Pitching

    Chris Stewart: Defensive Wiz

  • Will The Thrill

I don’t think the Yankees realize how crappy Sean Rodriguez is yet they always pitch to him like he’s Miguel Cabrera. I still cringe when I think about the intentional walk to Sean Rodriguez to pitch to Pena.

  • Greg

    Big out

  • Andy

Did Flaherty really say Stewart hasn’t had trouble receiving the ball? He has more past balls than most starters.

    • Greg

He has the same number as the All Star Mike Napoli. 6.

Arencibia has 8 to lead all players. Piersynski has 7

      • Greg

For the record Jesus Montero has 5

  • Kramerica Industries

Here’s another shitty Rays scrub waiting to do damage, like many of them seem to do.

Brooks Conrad, yay! Hey, Brooksie, remember fucking your team over in the playoffs a couple years ago?

    • Pat D

I’m guessing he’ll take that to the grave, like Bill Buckner and Leon Durham and Scott Norwood and…

  • Mr. Pink

Uh-Oh Brooks Conrad. He was just acquired and sprinkled with the Rays lucky pixie dust by Fernando Rodney.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

It’s blatantly obvious that West puts the squeeze on the Yanks in certain situations. That 2-2 pitch to Rodriguezshould’fe been called a strike. He will definitely call it against the Yanks if they were batting. Whether it’s subconscious or not, he always f@cks op the marginal calls against the Yanks. He’s not as confrontational as Balking Bob, but he’s just as much a prick.

    • Will The Thrill

Younger, more professional umps. That’s all I want for Christmas Santa.

  • christopher

Man, that’s a camera angle you don’t see too much over 2nd base.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Well Suszyn…

  • Greg

Cant blame Girardi for that one

    • Hall and Nokes

Hold on, he may have told DRob to groove one, you don’t know.

That’s what D-Rob gets for pitching like a bitch to a .150 hitter.

  • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Guess the yanks are just gonna get beat by .200 hitters

  • Robinson Tilapia

I’ll admit it. I had a bad feeling about that. D-Rob not in a place where he should be coming in with runners on base right now.

  • Tut

    Nice over managing by Girardi.

    • Greg

You are an idiot, you know that

      • Tut

        Sorry Girardi’s dad.

    Wait….

    REALLY?

The Yankees just got hurt this inning by Sean Rodriguez, Brooks Conrad, and Elliot Johnson.

God. Fuck that team, and fuck this stadium. It’s like Angel Stadium right now, except it sucks even more.

  • DERP

    Fuck you Robertson

    • sangreal

how the hell is that his fault?

      • Brian S.

For giving up a double to Brooks Conrad?

        • sangreal

The post I replied to was after Tex’s error.

      • DERP

He gave up a hit to Brooks Conrad and couldn’t put away Elliot Johnson with two strikes. Totally his fault.

        • sangreal

It’s his fault Tex missed a routine ground ball?

          • DERP

He should have made the play, but that wasn’t exactly routine. He should have just put away Johnson when he had the chance.

  • Kramerica Industries

So, this is basically a one inning game now, because Fernando Rodney is suddenly a lights out closer after years of being shit.

Would really, really hate to lose a game where Freddy pitched decently, and the Yankees were facing THIS lineup. It doesn’t get any easier the next two days.

  • Karl Krawfid

So he burned Logan and Robertson for 1 inning.

    Niiiice Yeaaaaah.

        • Crime Dog

Nope, but I’m confident enough that the Yankees could even lose 7 in a row here (yeah that would suck) and still make the postseason. From there, it’s a crapshoot.

Tex and A-Rod hitting in front of Cano is a crime against baseball decency. Sometimes I really dislike Girardi.

  • Pat D

Can anyone tell me if that would’ve been out in YS3?

My dad’s insisting it wouldn’t because it’s 385 there in YS3, but I don’t think it is in that spot.

    • Knoxvillain

      I say it would be.

    • Brian S.

The ball doesn’t carry in Tampa like it does in New York. So maybe.

    • Tom

It’s not just the distance, the ball doesn’t carry very well at the Trop…. look at the home road splits of a lot of the Rays pitchers.

      • Kramerica Industries

Ball doesn’t carry well at the Trop because it’s an indoor stadium.

The only air flow comes from AC. And I doubt that has anywhere near the same effect as natural wind patterns.

      I doubt it.

  • Tut

Arod and Tex both with sub .800 OPS’s. Cano should be batting 3rd.

    • Evan3457

…and then the “holes” move to 4th and 5th, plus you allow a lefty in the late innings to fact both without having to face a righty in between.

  • Athenian

    Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuumer

  • Tom

Pleas tell me it’s not Qualls/Rapada in the 8th… this is a 1 run game and is winnable.

  • Greg

Well the Yankees didnt fail with RISP. Girardi went to his better pitchers and they didn’t step up.

Baseball Gods must no want us to win this one

    • Pat D

      There are no baseball gods.

    • Frank

They hit into 3 DPs. What game are you watching?

      • Greg

So hitting .333 with RISP is failing

        • Tom

Again one “hit” was a popup that was only a hit because Matsui so badly misplayed a shallow pop fly that it didn’t hit his glove

They also generated 10 outs in those 9 AB’s (10PA’s)… pure avg is not a great stat.

          • Greg

Then tell baseball to change the way they put stats together

            • Tom

Or we can just intelligently interpret the stats, rather than mindlessly and ignorantly quoting #’s when they suit you?

The Yankees have 2 run scoring hits (one of which is a misplayed pop fly) and a sac fly. If that seems like success to you, then you are just being a slave to the #’s… it’s not a poor outing, but it’s not the success you are making it out to be.

        • Kramerica Industries

All these stats being thrown around without context need to stop.

You know very well hits #2 and #3 were set up thanks to an error “hit” that Matsui horribly misplayed. And those double plays have killed any chance the Yankees have had at pushing out the lead at all.

          • Greg

            Doesnt matter ONE BIT.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Someone shove that bow and arrow up Rodney’s a$$ in the 9th inning.

I so miss Joba. Baseball is much better with the fat man.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Always is.

  • Frank

Three innings Yanks had runners on first, second with 1 out and each time they hit into DP.

    • Greg

NOT RISPfail. 3-9 is not RISPfail

      • Frank

The 3-9 includes a gift pop fly ruled a double.

        • Evan3457

Your three DPs include a line drive back to the pitcher by Cano.

          • Greg

            We’re even

        • Greg

It still counts. End of Story

          • Tom

How many runs did they convert with men in scoring position?

            3 for 10?

And one of those was solely due to a badly misplayed ball.

            • Greg

UNTIL BASEBALL CHANGES THE WAY THEY PUT TOGETHER STATS, THIS IS THE STAT WE ARE GOING TO USE, CHILDREN

              • Tom

So I understand the guy typing in all caps is telling others that they are children?

If you could use a little intelligence as to what is behind the stats instead of typing in all caps, it might help having a civil discussion.

                Instead it’s:
                “End of Story”
                “CHILDREN”
                “TELL BASEBALL IT DOESN’T MATTER”
“I’M A SLAVE TO #’s WITH NO CONTEXT”

  • Will The Thrill

Fuck trading for pitching! We need someone whose balls don’t shrink back into their bodies when they go to the plate with men on base.

    • Greg

For Gods sakes, 3-9 is not RISPFail

  • TomH

Not really worth checking in here in order to read that twit’s many comments.

How hard is it to strike a guy out once the count is 0-2? It can’t be that hard, can it?

  • Pat D

Yep, like I said yesterday, the Mix ‘N’ Match special.

  • Dewayne is Wise

Is girardi going to use the whole pen tonight?
    Wise better start throwing huh.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Eppley to Qualls in the 9th. If you’re a troll, have we got a treat for you tonight.

    • Greg

      Um that was Rapada.

By the way, by looking at the idiocy that some people are saying on here, (not by you), do you understand why I am a negative person?

      • Robinson Tilapia

I’m reading the same stuff and laughing. C’mon, man. Lighten up.

  • DERP

How the fuck is Qualls’ hat already dirty?

    • Robinson Tilapia

      It’s just fucking Wetteland-ian.

    • Cy Pettitte

he got Cory Wade’s bullpen spot and his hat

  • christopher

It seems to me RISP Fail is a pretty weak stat. I’m surprised it’s such a big deal on this board.

  • Will The Thrill

I hope the Rays slide out of it really bad after the All Star break so when we play these games later this season it won’t be as bad because we’ll be 10 games up.

  • Rooting for U.S. Steel

So will this count as a Qualls-ity start?

    • DERP

      -1

  • Will The Thrill

I’m expecting Qualls to be only marginally better than Wade was this season. So… I’m not expecting much.

  • christopher

    Nice, welcome to the club.

  • Brian S.

Well we have been hitting Shields well so far so there is that.

  • christopher

    Okay.

  • DERP

    Qualls > Robertson

    Someone had to say it.

  • Dewayne is Wise

    Qualls nice start.

  • Greg

In my view this was the swing game of this particular series, with us winning tomorrow and the Rays winning on Wednesday.

Of Course we can still get our key 4 wins this week, it just gets a bit harder. And of course this game isn’t over yet

  • Kramerica Industries

    Lovely, this asshole.

Give him his 2 BS and L, please. His success has been beyond nauseating this year.

    • Will The Thrill

I don’t know how after being horrendous for his whole career he magically becomes dominant.

      • Pat D

        Duh, steroids.

        • JohnnyC

You’re joking but you’re probably not far from the truth.

      • Kramerica Industries

        Not that anyone will care…

I was reading a blurb in the local Times back during spring training about Rodney, and I mentioned as an aside to a couple buddies of mine about how Rodney was guaranteed to have a fantastic season, because that’s the Rays way. I mean, just look at Kyle Farnsworth last season.

Rodney had a sub-1 K/BB ratio last year. He was certifiably awful.

Somehow, that prophecy also came true. I hate myself for that.

        • Greg

          Joaquin Benoit too

          • Kramerica Industries

Benoit was a very good reliever in Texas – the concern was (justifiably) his shoulder.

I feel like he could’ve had that season with most teams.

Fernando Rodney is a career schmuck. Frustrating.

      • eephus_pitch

Even a lousy relief pitcher can have one good season. It’s not uncommon. Frustrating, for sure, but not unprecedented.

  • Will The Thrill

Of course Joe West is giving the inner part of the plate to Rodney.

  • DERP

So Ibanez, Chavez, and Martin. Could be worse

  • Pat D

That guy needs to be shot for two reasons.

1, the position of his hat. 2, whatever the fuck that shit was on his face.

  • christopher

    Nasty change-up.

  • Pat D

    Raul Chavez, Kenny?

  • Kramerica Industries

    God.

Rodney can just go fuck himself.

  • Greg

See the key to Rodney is that you have to sit on the changeup, Chavez is an idiot.

    • Tom

      Sit on the changeup?

The guy throws 95-96mph and your suggestion is to sit on the changeup.

      Wow, just wow….

  • christopher

Omph. Pitcher in the zone. Guys guessing.

  • DERP

I feel like Mike has the tweet already written out in case Wise does something good here.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

That first pitch was a fuhghnjjning ball!!

  • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Espn talking about the brilliance of maddon in this game. Nope just Yankees pitchers letting scrubs get walks and big hits

    • Athenian

      Yep. Very poor pitching.

  • Athenian

should never have lost this one

  • christopher

Damn, it’s an adventure hitting against this guy.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Fernando Rodney looks like a guy who yells that I’m the white devil at me in front of the Herald Square station.

  • DERP

    Thanks Robertson!

  • Pat D

Fucking sigh. Another one that got away.

  • Cy Pettitte

The only time this team loses is when they beat themselves.

  • Karl Krawfid

What a choke of a game by these Yankees.

  • captain kiwi

    urgh…

  • Greg

    I blame David Robertson.

You cant blame Girardi, you cant blame the offense when they give you lead in the late innings.

    • captain kiwi

i only sorta blame robertson. that tex error is what really sticks out to me. at least at that point it’s only a tie game. but channeling some buckner, that’s… just ouch.

      • Betty Lizard

That’s the one that hurt for me. And poor Tex.

        • captain kiwi

yep. i saw him pull the unassisted dp earlier and i just thought “what a friggin’ beast.” and then a few innings later comes the ground ball slip. just one of those nights i guess.

  • wow

    such BS…

  • Will The Thrill

Yankees playing like shit against the AL East. What else is new?

    • Greg

Support your claim please or just go away.

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen)

They’re 11-12 against 4 teams that are at least .500. Not really playing like shit, and not really a big deal.

    • DERP

You being a terrible poster. That’s not new actually.

      • Will The Thrill

Please dude. At least I’m encouraging conversation instead of insulting someone.

    • Need Pitching

      11-11
considering every team in the division is above .500, not really suprising

      • Greg

If that’s what he calls failure, he’s being a dumbass

    • Athenian

Um I will just say that I don’t get baseball because I live in another country. But if I were to look at the standings, as I just did, and saw that the Yankees played most of their division early in the season when teams like Toronto, Baltimore and even the Rays were HOT, while the Yankees were trying to find their footing. It would mean that your claim is just wrong.

Again using your logic, the Rays then, should be in first place up by at least 10 games since they hold the best record against the AL East. Of course they struggle against the might top talent Central and NL teams.

Conclusion: Is this really George W. Bush trolling?

      • Robinson Tilapia

You’re really in another country? Where? Does the “Athenian” tag actually mean you’re in Greece?

        • JohnnyC

I thought it was just an indirect plug for his hair dye, Grecian Formula.

  • TommyBoy

    That was quick as hell!

  • flamingo

This wasn’t a very fun loss.

  • Kramerica Industries

I hate Rays losses even more than Red Sox losses.

I know Fernando and Pena love to take a quick gloating of the standings when the Rays move into first place. Well, assholes, look at the standings right now with your fucking arrow shot.

I’m waiting for when the real Fernando Rodney shows up again. Probably not until after the Rays let him walk this off-season.

  • eephus_pitch

I just discovered my new least-favorite pitcher celebration routine.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Eerily reminds me of the Nova game last week, which was another game I forced myself to forget right after it ended.

    Trolls, this one’s for you.

    • Pat D

Don’t feed them! They’ll want more!! And it’s after dark!! What are you thinking?!?!

  • Athenian

Can’t win at the Trop. Yikes. No worries they will come away with one win this series. The weaker part of the Rays pitching staff goes the next two games.

    • JohnnyC

      Is that a joke?

    • Will The Thrill

Since when are James Shields and David Price weak? If anything the Yankees faced the weak link today. Moore has been walking lots of batters and giving up long balls like crazy.

      • DERP

        Swing and a miss

  • christopher

Monday night at The Trop. Glad it’s over.

  • TommyBoy

Since the Yankees are sending Guys down left and right, might want to think about sending Robertson back down. He’s been awful since May!

    • Need Pitching

      not even close

  • DERP

All that was missing tonight was Rapada throwing the ball into centerfield

  • Kramerica Industries

So, to recap: Sean Rodriguez, Brooks Conrad, and Elliot Johnson beat the Yankees tonight.

    God.

Fuck that team, fuck this game, and fuck that ballpark. I’m gonna need to find something to get rid of my edge, because it’s just building up right now.

    Motherfuckers.

And with Shields and Price on tap…

    • Will The Thrill

Yankees always screw themselves in these games. It’s always different crappy players but it happens every year. This year it’ll be Sean Rodriguez next year it’ll be Jerry Hairston Jr. It seem like the Yankees don’t bring their A game when playing against the Rays and Red Sox.

      • Kramerica Industries

Overall, they do well enough against the Red Sox.

And, generally, they do well enough against the Rays.

Those are both good teams – you won’t win 12 of 18 every year against them.

These Trop issues are relatively new. But they are sure as fuck annoying.

  • stuart a

manufacturing 4 runs or more for the Yanks in a game almost impossible…

good news Arod hit the ball to the warning track and had a almost homer..

I expect big things from him !!!!He is just missing,. If he really gets hot he may get 85 rbi’s if he goes en fuego….

tex , when you cannot hit you most field your position.

    last years Robertson is gone..

last 2 of 3 that they lost were giveaways from the pen and defense late…..

    • Pat D

Garth, if I gave you some money from my wallet, would that make you feel better?

  • DERP

We lost a game we should have won. It’s not the end of the world. Stop trying to overthink it.

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen)

      Exactly.

    • Kramerica Industries

      I apologize on my behalf.

But you try living in this hell-hole of a market. Even you would probably grow to have just as strong a hatred for the Rays as you would the Red Sox.

I mean, the biggest reason I was glad for The Collapse 2011 was because I still believed until Nolan Reimold crossed the plate that the Red Sox were a good enough team that, if they just got in, they could still have enough ammo to win the World Series. Their offense was still there, and the staff would be consolidated in a playoff series. They could run-n-gun with a team like Texas.

The Rays stood no chance of winning anything of merit in the playoffs, by contrast.

But, given their ridiculous luck this year (six wins where they trailed entering the 9th inning or later – only one loss) and them turning another miracle story out of a career schmuck like Fernando Rodney…

Rays fans are like dealing with thousands of stuart a’s.

      • eephus_pitch

No one deserves that. One is bad enough.
Oh, well. At least he only shows up some of the times, AKA “losses.” He’s whatever the opposite of a frontrunner is.

  • Betty Lizard

Just skimming through, this does not seem like a happy thread.
I’ll be in my “office,” a/k/a the hot tub. Hold my calls.

  • pistol pete

Tough game, rarely does Tex cost us a game in the field, but that’s baseball.
