Game 88: For The Sweep

By

(AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

I’m a simple guy, I just want the Yankees to keep winning series as the season progresses. Taking two of three in each series is a 108-win pace, so it seems like a good plan. The Yanks have already won this series, but a sweep of those annoying Angels would make for just a swell Sunday. Words can’t describe how much I would enjoy that third win today. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
DH Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin

RHP Ivan Nova

Today’s game starts a little after 1pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and TBS nationally. Enjoy.

But first, let’s set the mood.

      Hahaha +10000

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Bah-Bah-Bah Bird is the word..

      • jjyank

My senior year of undergrad one of my house-mates/friends got two pet birds to keep in his room, and I swear he sang that song every day for about 6 months.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I would’ve gotten a cat and opened the cage one day after about three weeks, then just let nature take it’s course.

          • Pat D

            That’s barbaric!

            Would there be any leftovers?

            • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m a bad person. I have no delusions about it.

          • jjyank

Ha I thought about it. Thankfully he lived on the third floor and I was on the second, so I could drown most of it out.

            • OMG! Bagels!

I like birds in the wild (though some people are bird phobic which is pretty funny to me), but I’ve never gotten people who keep birds as pets.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

    A Lineup! (vs RHP)

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

It’s on TBS Nationally, not MLB.

    • jjyank

Question: If I watch on TBS, do I have to listen to TBS broadcasters, or do they just carry the YES feed? Trying to decide between TBS and MLB.TV.

      • Pat D

Pretty sure they have their own announcers.

You’re likely to hear John Smoltz.

        • Paul VuvuZuvella

          Boomer

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

TBS has it’s own set of broadcasters. I’m not sure you can get it on MLB.TV if it’s broadcasted nationally though, can you?

        • jjyank

Yup, I can. Now I just need to decide if the delay on the MLB.TV feed is worth not listening to the TBS crew. Opinions?

          • Pat D

Depends on who exactly is in the TBS crew. If it’s Smoltz, I’d rather cut off my own ears.

            • jjyank

True. I’m leaning towards TBS because the delay is annoying. Not sure who the announcers are though.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

What’s the delay, I’d say if it’s more than 5 minutes go with the live TBS crew, but if we’re talking like a minute or two than just go w/ MLB.tv.

            • jjyank

Yeah it’s like two minutes. It’s just annoying because sometimes I read comments here that spoil what’s about to happen.

              • Pat D

                Don’t refresh so often, then.

                ;)

                • jjyank

I get antsy between batters :D

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I really don’t understand what makes Jered so good…he doesn’t have an over powering fastball, his peripherals aren’t really anything to write home about, besides his walk rate. Yet there he is with a sub 2 ERA.

    • Pat D

Mike made reference to this in the series preview article.

      http://mlb.sbnation.com/2012/3.....gels-stats

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

He’s also faced a very weak schedule.

    • Brian S.

He has good deception and extension which makes his upper 80′s stuff play up more. At least I think I read that somewhere.

  • Nathan

TBS crew gushing over Trout before the game.

    Shot #1.

    Have a good game, Nova!

    • RI$P FTW

How DARE they!?!?!?! Don’t they know the YANKEES are playing???

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

What do you care about Nova having a good game? You’re not going to remember pass the 3rd inning.

    • OMG! Bagels!

Do comments here result in a shot? You will be drunk by 1:30 and in a coma by 2. I hope you have life alert. “I’m Mike Trout drunk and I can’t get up.”

      • Nathan

No, I mentioned it yesterday that every time the commentators start giving Trout the ‘ol verbal BJs, I’d take a shot.

      • Nathan

Oh and yeah, I’m likely to get drunk. And if someone asks what happened, I’ll answer:

“Mike Trout, that’s what happened. He’s too much awesome”.

  • Pat D

Oh noez!! Linsanity gonna be over!!! Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

  • Andruw’s Smile

Surprised Wise isn’t getting the start in the OF.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

already want to kill Suzyn…it’s WeavER not WeavAH!!!!

    • Pat D

      You must really hate Francesa.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I hardly listen to the fat man ever.

    • Get Phelps Up

Over/Under on them calling him Jeff Weaver is 10.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        Taking the over.

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

May not want to throw that pitch in that location again, Ivan.

  • Andruw’s Smile

Holy crap, Nova has 100 Ks? I may have known that, but man that is surprising.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow…Aybar has power like that? I mean that ball was tattooed.

  • Nathan

Didn’t Aybar just do that the other game? Almost same spot.

  • Cy Pettitte

how does Aybar have 2 HRs in 3 games against us. unacceptable.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    wtf?

  • jjyank

Oh TBS announcers…that homer had nothing to do with the short porch.

    • whozat

…how does a homer drilled into the second deck have anything to do with the short porch? That was out in any stadium!

Sigh. Gotta reinforce the narrative, I guess.

      • jjyank

Something along the lines of “I don’t care how big or how small you are, if you square up on a ball it’s outta here with that short porch”. As the ball lands in the second deck, lol.

  • jjyank

    God damn it.

  • Nathan

    Awesome. Just awesome.

  • Greg

Well we took two of three

    • Andruw’s Smile

Its 2-0. The Yankees were down 5-2 in the 8th vs one of the best relievers in the game. Everyone calm down.

    • jjyank

      Greg it’s the first inning.

      • Greg

If the opposing pitcher was Williams, then I would feel better. Jered Weaver has a 1.99 ERA

        • Hummingbird S.

          Downs ERA was even lower..

          • Greg

Yeah but he’s a reliever. They can go on and off like that

        • Get Phelps Up

          Look at his home/road splits.

        • whozat

See the series preview for information about his home-road splits and why he’s likely to be more beatable that that aggregate number would make him seem.

          • whozat

            See?

        • jjyank

And it’s like 2 runs higher on the road. Relax.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

          against mostly shitty offenses

  • RI$P FTW

    It’s a conspiracy! It’s not Nova’s fault!

  • DERP

    Fuck off Nova.

  • Greg

Nova’s in a bit of a rough stretch. 3 bad starts so far.

    • DERP

      not sure if serious

      • Greg

Never mind, my mind went for a bit.

    • Get Phelps Up

I thought his start in Fenway was very good, considering the circumstances.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Really? I’m looking at his BR game logs, his last three starts:
      Loss at Chicago: 7.1IP 1ER 6H 1BB 5Ks
      Loss at Tampa: 6IP 3ER(6R) 7H 2BB 5Ks
      Win at Boston: 6IP 1ER(2R) 6H 2BB 10Ks

Only the Tampa loss sticks out as bad.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

this reminds me of alds game five last year. nova immeadeatly gives up two dingers to put us in a big hole. i hope that he doesn’t come out with forearm pain. get it together man

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

All well, all this tells me is the ball is flying out, if we can get a couple pitches up from Weaver we could win this game.

  • Cy Pettitte

it’s ok guys, he knows how to win. we got this.

  • Zooboy

Prediction: the Yankees will bring the tying run to the plate.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

lets just hope that the runner will not be in scoring position or we are doomed

  • jjyank

Alright boys, pick Nova back up! Weaver has no rocks today, let’s get him.

  • Will The Thrill

Aybar and Pujols looked way too happy after hitting those homers. You would think it was the eighth inning. Calm down motherfuckers.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

Jered, Hit the mascot with the next pitch.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Good reference lol.

  • Cy Pettitte

Jered misses his rock pile already.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

not much is going to get by trout/bourgeous, need to hit it out of the park

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

You’ve come to the right team for that.

  • Andruw’s Smile

Thank God for Trumbo in right. if they had another Bourjous/Trout defender in right I would lose my mind.

  • Will (the other one)

Boy, I hope Weaver plans on living up in the zone like this all day.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    A-BOMB, FOR A-ROD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    HR power!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    cheap homer, it shouldn’t count

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

    Alex is so done.

  • DERP

    A-Rod slaying bitches.

  • Greg

Well me and my big mouth…

  • Will (the other one)

    Porch it, motherf**ker!

  • Get Phelps Up

    stuart is crying.

  • jjyank

A-ROD!!!! That was an A-Rod of old oppo field shot, even if it was a bit if a YS3 cheapie.

Hey Greg, the game isn’t over buddy.

  • Nathan

RBIs with RISP, a game winner (hit!) from Martin and an A-Rod HR?

ASB has done wonders for this team.

  • DERP

Not gonna lie, I’d probably have sex with Alex.

    • jjyank

Just be smart and wrap it up.

  • Andruw’s Smile

First home run of the season off a good pitcher! I was told that wasn’t allowed.

  • Eirias

There is no phrase I dislike more in baseball commentary than “going oppo.”

    • RI$P FTW

‘meh’ and ‘heh’ are worse. They’re the epitome of internet douchiness.

  • Strat

Just like that… Tie game. Looks like the ball is flyin’ today.

  • Kramerica Industries

I awoke from a mid-morning malaise just in time to see that Nova had surrendered two home runs*, including another home run to Erick Aybar, for a lovely start. Fortunately, like yesterday, a two run homer just brought things back even. So, we begin anew.

*Dick Stockton said this was the first time Nova had ever allowed two first inning home runs in his career. Sadly, when considering the playoffs, you realize that’s not true. Just a painful reminder.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I thought this game was over after last inning

    I thought A-Rod was done

I thought you couldn’t beat good pitchers with the homer

    • jjyank

So many narratives, so little time.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

      One-third of that is true.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Meh, he’s still a relatively productive player (I’m just guessing which one you’re referring to) I mean he’s not a clean up hitter anymore, but he’s still not bad.

  • Cy Pettitte

wow everything is getting crushed. Weaver isn’t fooling anyone.

  • Greg

All balls are being hit hard. Even Jeter’s out was hard

  • DERP

Jered Weaver struggling against a good team? NO WAI!

  • stuart a

:: sits silently crying in corner ::

    • jjyank

Something tells me this isn’t the real stuart.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Hamiltonian bat toss

  • DERP

    Spike Lee lol

  • jjyank

Haha Spike Lee got the bat.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I think Tex was aiming for Spike

    • Will (the other one)

TBS’ color guy: “I’m sure some people wish that’d hit him!” (nervous chuckle)

      • OMG! Bagels!

Why would any wish that something would hit Spike Lee?

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

          maybe Reggie Miller?

        • Brian S.

Probably some racist fucks. Maybe some Boston fans are watching the game.

          • OMG! Bagels!

Maybe those dumb Turkey Hill ice cream commercials.

  • Nathan

    SPIKE LEE!!! That’s awesome.

  • Brian S.

    LOL SPIKE LEE

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If I was a player, and I was incredibly hot, and I lost a bat into the stands, I’d call time grab another bat and see if my old bat was ok. If it was I’d trade the new bat for the other one.

    Tex should’ve done the same.

    • RI$P FTW

I hope a black cat walks by you.

    • OMG! Bagels!

How much freaking time would that take?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Three minutes? Grab the new bat, jog over to the guy with the bat, tell him the deal. Check the bat, and job back to home plate.

        • OMG! Bagels!

          Wrestle it from Spike Lee.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Arod says boo this motherfuckers and goes especially to you stuart a wherever you are.

  • RI$P FTW

Why is Swisher wearing sunglasses while at-bat on a cloudy day?

    • OMG! Bagels!

Because he has sunshine on a cloudy day.

      • Nathan

        I LOL’d.

      • RI$P FTW

        I bet there’s a fly in A-Rod’s chardonnay!

  • Hummingbird S.

that was a good first inning… now they just need to stop whiffing on that big curve and Weaver will be out before the 5th

  • Get Phelps Up

Bobby V. is blaming Youkilis for their poor relationship AFTER the comments about weather his head was in the game.

    Too funny.

  • jjyank

    Way to settle down, Ivan.

  • Greg

    Good recovery Nova. Quick too.

  • DERP

The Orioles just allowed a leadoff homer

  • Greg

I think the best thing about that Gary Thorne call is just the way he yells “DON MATTINGLY!”, not the “hold on to the roof”

  • Athenian

Man! What line up that would be….. King Felix, CC, Pineda, Nova……Cash, get on the phone and do it.

    • Nathan

If Cash couldn’t get King Felix with Montero as bait, I doubt they’d deal him now with what the Yankees could offer.

  • DERP

Chavez will do something good here.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

quick call something good from martin

  • Bartolo’s Colon

can’t be too many uglier swings than ibanez

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Positives from that play: runner in scoring position now, and Russel didn’t GIDP.

  • jjyank

That might have been a bunt hit if it got on the ground quicker.

  • Hummingbird S.

    good idea but bad execution

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Free outs! Swing the damn bat, guys.

    • Greg

He wasn’t trying to give away an out

    • Brian S.

That looked like a bunt for a hit attempt.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Odds are Russel’s going to make an out, Weaver’s got a great GB rate, you said yourself its around 55%..I’d much rather get the runner into scoring position than chance the DP.

      • DERP

Weaver does not have a good ground ball rate.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Fuck…poor reading skills by me…I was looking at Mike’s write up of Wilson, not Weaver. I’m dumb.

          • whozat

Yeah, Weaver is one of the flyballiest pitchers going. On a day where the ball is flying out, you have to swing the bat.

    • Hummingbird S.

about that bunt, it was a good idea. The 3rd baseman was so far away, unfortunately he hit it too hard. And chances are he wasn’t going to get a hit anyway if he were swinging.

  • jjyank

    ZOMG RISPSUCCESS

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Meh, at least the run scored…but poor baserunning there Derek.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Didn’t someone just go on and on about Jeter never making a baserunning mistake a few weeks ago? That’s two in the last six games.

    • Brian S.

He’s just a smart, heady player!

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

        Um, he is. Nobody’s perfect.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

He was making absolutely sure the slow Chavez scored. Mistake, maybe. Not egregious though. Functional.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Looked like he just didn’t realize until too late that the second baseman was sneaking behind him. If he was just making sure Chavez was scoring, he would have gone to second.

  • Hummingbird S.

nice hit, but goddamnit, STOP RUNNING INTO OUTS!!

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

Wow, Jeet drops a flyball last week, and makes a baserunning mistake this week. Head explodes.

    • RI$P FTW

I heard he’s been texting with Nunez lately.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

yea for giving them two outs, but ill take a run

  • DERP

    Thanks Derek

  • Greg

Cant get too upset about that. I think it was a set play by the Angels.

    • whozat

I can absolutely get upset about one the purported headiest players in baseball rounding first far enough that he can get picked off by a cutoff throw. Jeter doesn’t get to be teflon because of stuff he did years ago.

      • Greg

If O’Neill isnt pissed. I wont be

      • Brian S.

If that happened to A-Rod he gets booed.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If Alex goes 4-5 with 2 homers and 2 RBI doubles, but strikes out in the bottom of the 9th with the winning run on base he’s going to get booed.

        • Brian S.

          Told you

  • Hummingbird S.

Shutdown inning Nova, please. Dont walk a garbage hitter in front of Trout..

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Holy crap Curtis.

  • DERP

    Granderson is the tits.

  • jjyank

    Wow what a catch Grandy!

  • Hummingbird S.

    Grandy!!! Beautiful!

  • Cy Pettitte

    GRANDY!!! take that Angels outfield.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Meh, Trout would’ve made it look easy-MSM.

    • whozat

…I think there’s actually a lot of truth to that :-)

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Wow … that was a helluva catch Grandy, Trout-like even.

  • Nathan

Granderson just saved me about 2-3 shots! AWESOME play!

    • jjyank

Haha. Depends on your definition of “save”. Everyone wins in drinking games!

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Shots for you John/Suzyn talking about how fast Trout is, and how that would’ve been an inside the parker if Grandy doesn’t catch it.

      • jjyank

        TBS mentioned that too.

  • Get Phelps Up

    Grandy Trout’d it!

  • DERP

    Yes, but the UZR

  • flamingo

    Oh my god Grandy

  • Athenian

    What a play!

  • Greg

Ump is giving the outside curve to Weaver

  • DERP

Miguel Gonzalez is pitching for the Orioles today. The Orioles misspelled his name on his jersey. They spelled is ‘Gonzales.’

    • jjyank

      Ouch haha.

    • Get Phelps Up

      That’s so Orioles.

    • Cy Pettitte

could have been worse, they could have just given him Mike Gonzalez’s used jerseys

    • Brian S.

      Disrespectful to Flanny.

  • CUYanks

Where was it they said that a player explained Jered Weaver’s splits by saying it was almost impossible to pick up his ball off of the rocks in center field in Anaheim?

  • Brian S.

    singles hitter

  • jjyank

Robbie continues to be en fuego.

  • Get Phelps Up

Jered pitching like his older brother out there.

  • DM

    Weaver’s got nothing today.

  • Brian S.

I have an off-topic question. Is 2014 the only year we have to get under 189 AAV? And then we can go back to 200-210 in 2015?

    • jjyank

I think we just have to get under for 1 year, then it resets everything. If/when they go back over, the penalties start again but it starts at a lower penalty and gradually climes each year their over. So if they get under for one year, they save a lot of money for a next couple of years, until the penalties reach the levels they are currently paying.

      That’s my understanding.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Yes. They need to reset the luxury tax cumulative counter.

    • whozat

The short answer is yes, at least for a while. There’s some kind of escalator clause that compounds every consecutive year you’re over the limit. By dropping under for one year, you reset all that.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yes, but there are added bonuses for staying under in 2015 as well. Like a break on revenue sharing or something.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

They just need to go under for one year to reset the luxury tax penalties.
They need to go under for 2 consecutive years to completely reset the new Market Disqualification rebate penalties.

  • jjyank

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

  • Cy Pettitte

    ummmm what.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Did that seriously just happen?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Three outs on the bases.

  • Get Phelps Up

    Wow…just wow.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    Bunch of fucking morons

    Double TOOTBLAN

  • RI$P FTW

    How embarrassing.

  • Hummingbird S.

wow… this is pathetic and inexcusable

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

TOOTBLAN 3 times in the last two innings…that’s un-fucking-acceptable.

  • Greg

ARod should have gone immediately as Cano got in a rundown.

  • Nathan

Are you shiting me? That’s just HORRIBLE base running.

  • Will (the other one)

Okay, so that may have been the worst baseball play I’ve ever seen. But, hey, we’re still in the lead!

    • whozat

      …wow

Considering the situation, this is definitely worse:

      • jjyank

        WOW.

      • Will (the other one)

You’re absolutely right; I definitely should’ve been more specific. That may be the worst baseball play I’ve ever seen that didn’t involve Ruben Rivera.

  • whozat

Jon and Suzyn LOVE to act like a single game refutes long standing trends. I hate, hate, hate them. Like…if over the course of the season, ARod has better numbers as a DH, a short-porch-special and a single don’t invalidate that trend.

    • RI$P FTW

Everyone here does the same thing. Just sayin’.

      • whozat

I expect better from people who work in the game, which I guess is too much to ask.

        • RI$P FTW

          Good point.

  • Brian S.

lol wtf was that. A-Rod needed to go way sooner than he did.

    • Greg

Exactly. He should have gone immediately.

  • RI$P FTW

$200 million of base running right there.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    A new kind of RISPFAIL

    • The Scheister of Doom

At least the BA didn’t dip in that spot.

      #silverlining

  • TommyBoy

    pathetic

  • flamingo

    How about no.

  • Kramerica Industries

I think that’s the third time the fake-third/throw-first trick has worked for the Angels against the Yankees, in the past calendar year or so.

I don’t think I’ve seen it work in any other game I’ve watched in the past five years, aside.

  • Greg

Now of course, we dont know if Tex gets the job done, but it is annoying

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Gameday is still trying to process what happened to end last inning.

    • flamingo

At least it’s loading for you, though! Mine hasn’t loaded since last night.

  • Will The Thrill

What the fuck was that? Way to help out Weaver and the Angels! Yankees should know that and his team are always looking for ways to steal outs. Fucking concentrate! Also Joe Girardi has to realize that without Gardner the Yankees are about the slowest team in the majors. Stop sending our slow ass runners.

    • Greg

Cano is not in the category of a slow ass runner. And I doubt Girardi called that.

      • jjyank

I don’t even know if Cano was going or not. And A-Rod breaking for home was either on him or Thomson.

        • Greg

He was baited to go by the third to first maneuver.

    • Brian S.

He didn’t send them that was just Cano getting picked off. But yeah that hit and run bullshit he tried yesterday was really annoying.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Doubt Giratdi was sending him. Cano took secondary lead when Weaver started his motion except that it was the 3rd to 1st move and he fell for it.

      • Greg

And then ARod got indecisive about what he should do. He should gone back to the bag and stayed there or gone home immediately.

  • Tom

Is it just too hard for them to stand on the bases?

They’ve already given Weaver a free inning with 3 outs in 3 innings.

  • Get Phelps Up

Machael Kay was happy about that play just so he could talk about the Jeff Nelson move.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I hate John and Suzyn they’re going on and on about good pitching vs good hitting and small ball parks I had no idea if there was anyone out or anybody on base until Gameday finally caught up.

    • PJ

I agree, I deliver pizza’s way out here in Albuquerque and rely on John and Suzyn to keep me up to date on the game as i’m working. I will listen the entire way to a delivery and never once get a score. Then, by some cruel twist of fate, I had to listen to Suzyn’s bafflement of how you can order a pizza online and have it delivered…while delivering pizza’s placed by people online and just wanting a score. I’ve never screamed at my radio so loudly before.

      • jjyank

I feel ya man, I did the pizza delivery gig for a couple summers while I was in undergrad, and was forced to rely on good ol’ 880. I feel your pain.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I too feel your pain, I delivered pizza for 3 years before getting the gig I have now.

  • Hummingbird S.

I wonder why the keep throwing fastballs to Trumbo… it’s just dumb

  • Hummingbird S.

4 pitch walk to a garbage hitter, sound strategy.

  • The Scheister of Doom

My iPad died as I was about to send the following at the end of the last half inning, I must say that was by far some of the worst base running I’ve EVER seen with a damn DB on the base paths. They should both be thoroughly embarrassed.

    • The Scheister of Doom

DP, not a DB. They are both DBs for that though. Plus A-Rods RBI totals are low, so I blame him.

Wow Ibanez. I thought he was gonna pass out from running that far :P

  • Kramerica Industries

With Ibanez being the LFer, that spooked me the further Ibanez had to run.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

How easy of a catch was that, because Sterling just tried to give me a heart attack acting like it was inches away from dropping.

    • Get Phelps Up

It’s an easy play with a non Ibanez outfielder out there.

      • jjyank

Yeah, Brett Gardner probably has a tea party out there while waiting for it to drop.

        • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

          That is definitely true

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

      It was a long run.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Andruw doesn’t get that ball.

    Hustle.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Andruw probably makes it look like a normal catch.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        No, definitely not.

        • jjyank

Maybe not normal, but Andruw definitely catches that.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Andruw camps under it and catches it like a routine pop-up. He doesn’t have to hustle because he’s historically great at reading the ball off the bat.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

If Andruw was positioned where Raul was, he does NOT get that ball. Andruw is a historically awesome outfielder. But he doesn’t sprint to that ball, nor get there.

Raul is an awful fielder but he hustles. Stop looking at Fielding metrics and judge on reality. Andruw would not have gotten there.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

One, with the eye test with Andruw he would catch that easily

Two, silly me I forgot Fielding Metrics only judge video game results, not baseball games played in reality.

      • jjyank

        Yes, yes it would.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yes, let’s give away an all star outfielder for a pitcher who no longer throws his best pitch because it destroys his elbow. Let’s throw in some prospects as well.

      • Mauro

My friend grandeson is great but in two years he Will be a 230 hitter with pop. Tim is AN ace. He is just 26.
But ok . In two years we Will see. You are the kind of person who thought garner was better than melky.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Have you watched Lincecum at all this year? His only two good games have come against the Dodgers (without Kemp and Ethier) and the Astros (without Lowrie).

If you’re worried about Granderson being a .230 hitter in two years, how are you not worried about Lincecum being a reliever or completely out of baseball?

          • jjyank

This. His ERA is almost 6, his WHIP is over 1.5, his ERA+ is 59. And he’s been trending downward for a couple of years too.

          • Mauro

Because tim has been always a beast. Grandeson is a two year wonder. He is great right Now but he Will come down to earth. And he is 32 today. If you think tim is done what do you think of Pineda ? Is he done?

            • Get Phelps Up

Seriously? If you’re talking about coming back to earth, what’s Lincecum been doing?

              • Mauro

                  Astros.

And in AT&T park. Hell, I think I might be able to at least hold my own against the Stros there.

                • jjyank

Oh give me a break with that ridiculous narrative. Lincecum’s team won the world series 2 years ago, but now San Fran “bores” him? How about he’s just not that good anymore?

                • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Bored on a first place team?

                • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Betances could come up tomorrow and go 8 against the Astros, especially if Lowrie’s out.

            • jjyank

Look at my comment above. Lincecum has been terrible this year, and he’s been trending in that direction for 2-3 years.

            • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Tim is 6 years older than Pineda, his fast ball velocity is down, all his periferals are way down from last year, also he doesn’t throw the slider any more so he’s just fastball, curve.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

          Tim is was AN ace.

          Fixed that for you.

          • Mauro

            Ok. Pineda is the ace.

            • jjyank

What? That would be CC. You aren’t making any sense.

              • Brian S.

                But CC isn’t an ace.

            • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

WTF does Pineda have to do with anything?
Lincecum has been awful this year.

              • Get Phelps Up

Lincecum has more wins than Pineda.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

          Gardner WAS better than Melky.
Then Melky had an absolutely horrible season, hit bottom, and decided to finally dedicate himself to baseball.
NOW Melky is better than Gardner.

  • Brian S.

    God damn Ibanez is terrible.

    • Greg

Not according to Axisa. He says he has risen above expectations.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That’s mostly because his expectations were to be terrible and cut by June.

        • The Scheister of Doom
        • Brian S.

Well someone needs to hurry up and do that already.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He really hasn’t been that bad dude. I mean he hasn’t been great, but he could definitely be playing a lot worse.

            • jjyank

And he’s probably playing better than whoever his replacement would be, unless Cashman swings a trade for someone younger and better. But as far as in-house and scrap heap guys go, Ibanez is probably the best bet.

              • Brian S.

Ronnier Mustelier and Chris Dickerson would both be more productive than him.

                • Brian S.

As would Cust and Branyan but they can’t play the outfield.

                  • jjyank

Right. MAYBE Dickerson, but Mustelier is an unknown too. I don’t have a problem with Ibanez for the time being.

                • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

                  based on?

            • Brian S.

He has a low 90 wRC+ and provides negative defensive value. How is that ‘not bad’?

              • Get Phelps Up

108 wRC+ vs RHP. I couldn’t care less about his numbers against LHP.

                • Brian S.

Well you should care because he is facing them and he sucks.

                  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

He only faces lefties when he is left in the game when the Yankees already have the lead. If anything, blame Girardi for that.

                  • Get Phelps Up

He was brought here to hit RHP. I really can’t care about 30 PAs against LHP.

  • Hummingbird S.

It seems like the lead should be a lot bigger.. they are hitting Weaver hard.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

  • Kramerica Industries

Why in the world would Martin try that again?

And talk about leaving Chavez out to dry.

Can we please give away more outs?

The Yankees are not making this nearly easy enough for Weaver.

  • flamingo

    Martin??!!

  • Tom

This is just insanity… Weaver has retired 10 batters in 5 innings.

He has retired 3 hitters just once in an inning this game.

    • Greg

Did you count the first bunt? Because he was trying for a hit.

    • Tom

Oh and 2 of the 10 hitters he has retired have been via bunts.

So when the Yankees have chosen to actually swing, he’s gotten 8 batters out through 5innings.

  • CUYanks

It also seems that his technique on the bunt is basically asking for a pop up.

  • Arya

The most powerful lineup in baseball and they send a catcher up there to bunt into 3 outs and they run into 2 more outs with runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Awful strategy.

i hate how much people use the word “fail” but that martin’s definitely merited it.

  • Countryclub

Boy, if the yanks lose this game it will sting as a fan. It’s like they’re trying to give it away (I know they’re not).

  • Hummingbird S.

look at that, they know how to round first base without getting picked off

  • Greg

Well at the beginning of the series I expected we’d lose 2 of 3. So my expectations are already met.

    They just look off today.

    • Brian S.

I still think we win this game but if we don’t I’m not worried. Our lead is so huge I’m watching this stress free.

      • Countryclub

There’s no reason to be worried about their lead. But it still sucks to give games away. Hopefully they hold on.

        • captain kiwi

definitely this. probably a meaningless game in the long run, but still frustrating to see silly mistakes like today.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This. I we’re going to lose games, it happens. But if we can take 2 out of 3 against a good team like the Angels, that’s great.

This AB and the one before it to Callaspo is why I hate the Angels.

    • Hummingbird S.

hate the awful pitching that allows mediocre hitters to do that.

  • The Scheister of Doom

    Nova sucks.

  • Widget

Now that is pathetic. Bad enough they have given up 2 homers to Aybar this series, but Izturis? That guy has even less power.

  • Mike Stanley

Honest question: am I thickheaded for being happy whenever they get ANYTHING good out of Nova because I don’t think he’s any better than average at best?

    • Brian S.

Depends on your definition of average. He’s a 4 ERA/FIP guy that is both overrated and underrated because of his win total (overrated by casual fans that love wins, underrated by people that think he sucks and is only a product of run support). He’s really nice to have since he is cheap and he has potential to get better.

      • Mike Stanley

His stuff, when it’s off, is just SO hittable. I’d rather he was wild than just leaving every single pitch down Broadway.

        BABIvanP

        • Get Phelps Up

Everyone’s stuff is hittable when it’s off.

  • Across The Pond

Unless I’ve read it wrong,Granderson rates a -15 with UZR. How can anyone take those metrics seriously?

    • Mike Stanley

UZR is best viewed in a minimum of 3-year samples. Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) is a much better measure.

    • Mike Stanley

Honestly though, Curtis IS one of the worst defensive CF in baseball. Don’t let a couple of nice catches fool you. He takes horrible routes.

      (ILU Curtis tho)

      • Across The Pond

I know he isn’t the best but there is no way he’s 15 runs bad this year.

        • Mike Stanley

DRS has him costing them 6 runs last year and 8 this year. That seem closer?

          • Across The Pond

            Yeah I probably wouldn’t argue with 6.

For what it’s worth both systems have Ibanez as a better defender. I just can’t buy that.

    • The Scheister of Doom

      UZR = crap

  • TommyBoy

Nova can’t be trusted. And the Yankees ‘ran’ themselves out of this game.

  • Greg

Is Nova still a quality pitcher that the Yankees have developed because his ERA is not good.

    • Tom

ERA- is 94 coming into today.

6% better than league average is not good?

      • Greg

        Tell TommyBoy this

        • Tom

I’m telling the guy who said his ERA is not good.

  • The Scheister of Doom

Maicer Izturis would hit 15-20 HRs yearly if he played half his games at YS3.

  • Athenian

With better base running, that home run should have tied the game.

    • Greg

      FALLACY

  • TommyBoy

Ivan Nova, the most overrated pitcher in baseball.

  • stuart a

arod hit a homer and now has a whopping 38 rbi’s. throw a parade.

maybe he get get his slugging % to the top 5 on the team.

arod still stinks, I hope he proves me wrong but i doubt it….

Damn, I had my money on “Thelma”.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

That was my first thought, but I thought it was too close to Selma. I didn’t want to get too repetitive.

          • jjyank

Right, I forgot you used Selma before. Fair enough.

        • OMG! Bagels!

          Tallulah. Damn.

      40 RBI

    • Get Phelps Up

40 RBIs. At least get the basic shit right.

      • Mike Stanley

        Hahahahahahaha

    • Will (the other one)

Hi buddy! I was starting to worry we might not see you this afternoon! Glad to know you’re okay.

      I missed you Stu.

I should have read the comments above mine haha. Grandy solo shot, nevermind :P

      • captain kiwi

lol. the SOLO run. got it now. good lord i’m out of it today.

    • Get Phelps Up

Grandy hit one into the 2nd deck.

    • captain kiwi

      izturis 2 run shot

  • The Scheister of Doom

A-Rod…Cano would’ve taken that final pitch. Terrible.

    • Greg

Looking at Cano’s at bat, maybe not

      • The Scheister of Doom

Yeah you’re right but he would’ve made contact.

    • captain kiwi

i dunno, cano’s strikeout was kinda ugly too…

  • OMG! Bagels!

Grandy. Sticking to the narrative. Go boyz.

  • Mike Stanley

Remember, if the Yankees win, it doesn’t count, because they hit too many homers.

But if the Angels win, it’s because they showed power.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    Long leash for Nova …?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The alternative is Chad Qualls, so yes.

      • Get Phelps Up

And Qualls is still coming in.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I’d rather Qualls with a clean inning than coming in with a jam.
There’s at least a slim chance Qualls has a good day. Nova was shaky all game.

  • Cy Pettitte

why is Nova even in this game? Girardi punting.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nova is garbage man.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Why on earth is Nova still in this game?

    • captain kiwi

      1 run game. totally doable.

  • Greg

You can question why Nova started the seventh but Girardi wanted to try and get him line for a win.

    • Mike Stanley

That’s a really dumb way to manage, though.

      • Greg

It might be dumb, but I see it alot.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Why the “but?” That makes it sound acceptable.

It should be “It might be dumb and I see it alot.”

          • flamingo

Once you’re nitpicking, there should be a comma between the two independent clauses.

          • TomH

It’s an expression of wonder at the unintelligence of mankind. Although this is unintelligent, nothing prevents us humans from doing it, etc.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Which is why I hate the win stat and consider it the worst thing in baseball. The most important thing should be the team win, not getting your starter the win.

      • TomH

The “win stat” is the “worst” thing in baseball?

You underestimate the importance of ego in athletes. This “I only thing about the team” stuff is said for the benefit of the press, small children, the superego, and the manager.

        • TomH

I.e., This “I only think about the thing” stuff.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This has nothing to do with the ego of an athlete. At the end of the day it’s up to nobody but Joe Girardi when a starter comes out of a game. Whether the starting pitcher is in line for the win or no the manager should do what’s best to get the win for the team.

  • your mom

Ride down the friggin pipe. Nice job Nova.

  • flamingo

    Let’s pull Nova.

  • TommyBoy

WTF is Nova still in the game!

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Time to get Nova out of there.

  • Kramerica Industries

Not sure why Nova started that inning, and pretty shocking that Aybar continues to be a pain in the ass, eh?

  • Greg

Also I think Girardi realizes this game means little, so why waste the pen in a game of little importance

  • Cy Pettitte

the old let the starter stay in and put runners on 1st and 3rd then pull him

  • Widget

Go yard Pujols and just end the misery today. Thanks.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Oh boy, Chad Qualls. Probably better off leaving Nova in the game.

    • Greg

Again, Girardi probably is thinking “We took two of three, we look off today, this game means little”

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s fine for fans to think that way, and it’s also fine for him to rest certain guys but if he’s actively managing with the thought that “loosing this game is ok.” that is completely unacceptable.

  • Arya

So Nova had just given up the lead and then some then we cut the lead to one and Girardi responds by sending Nova out there for another inning. No surprise that Nova, who had little control today, will give up more runs and add to our deficit. And this 2 games after the bullpen just had 4 days off. Inexcusable.

    • Mike Stanley

Is this a good time to mention the team is playing .700 ball the last 45 games?

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Qualls vs. Pujols?

    Uh-oh.

  • TommyBoy

As usual Clueless Joe takes a pitcher out 2 or 3 hitters to late.

    • jjyank

Clueless Joe? You know he’s managing the team with the best record in all of baseball right? Can’t be that clueless.

      • TommyBoy

LMAO at you! They win in spite of Clueless Joe, not because of him!

        • jjyank

He’s not the best manager in the game or anything, but he’s far from clueless. Girardi is a great bullpen manager and has gotten great production out of his bench by putting them in positions to succeed. They don’t necessarily win directly because of him, but I’m thinking it should be “Clueless TommyBoy”.

          • Mike Stanley

            This.

  • Mike Stanley

    Does This Ball Land?

    1. Yes!
    2. No!
    3. I need a bigger telescope.

  • Greg

Heew we go again, blaming Girardi for a game that doesnt matter.

    • Get Phelps Up

You’re right, this game won’t mean anything in the long run, but it’s still frustrating.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

Ripping Girardi for not wanting to put in Chad freaking Qualls is absurd.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I keep forgetting they already clinched the division.

      • Greg

A lot of people seem to think so.

        • Get Phelps Up

They have a big lead, but have lots of head to head games left.

If they don’t win the division, there will be a lot more reasons than questionable bullpen management on July 15.

    • Kramerica Industries

All I’m learning about you is that you have no concept of going for the jugular.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    Heads up play by Tex.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Heads up defense by Tex.

Run scores, but you can’t complain that outcome.

  • Cy Pettitte

    base running clinic today

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

Couldn’t Tex just have stepped on the base.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      yes

    • Mike Stanley

The ball was thrown wide of the bag!!!!

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

        I meant after that.

    • Ethan

I think he saw Pujols make a turn, not miss the bag. Hence he had to tag him

    • Mike Stanley

What makes you think Teixeira could have seen Pujols missed the bag? Why would he think Pujols missed the bag?

      • Paul VuvuZuvella

        Good point

        • Mike Stanley

Yeah not like you can assume Pujols is going to just miss the base. I doubt he’s ever done that.

  • Cy Pettitte

    there’s like a 5% chance Qualls doesn’t give up a 500ft HR to Trumbo

  • DERP

I hoping we see DJ Mitchell next inning. He is still here, right?

    • Tom

Well since the game means nothing, might as well. (either him or Wise so you can save the pen)

    • Tom

      Bunt?

  • your mom

    Good job Qualls.

  • The Scheister of Doom

I would love to get into Girardi’s head and find out why on earth he left Nova in, that one extra run could make a huge difference.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

3 reasons, all leading into each other. He wanted to sneak one more inning out of Nova, save the bullpen a little, and maybe line up Nova with the chance for the win. Not saying it was the right move, but considering he had Chad Qualls behind Nova I kind of understand it.

      • The Scheister of Doom

Looks worse now being that solo shot. Poor mgmt, IMO.

        • OMG! Bagels!

          hahahaha

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Andrew McCutchen is singlehandedly proving that lineup protection is meaningless.

  • jjyank

  • DERP

    Chavez is so solid.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Weaver’s reaction was priceless.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The Yankees are going to end up winning this game in spite of themselves.

  • DM

I can’t believe we gave Chavez a major league deal.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

What a waste of money and a roster spot.

      • DM

… esp when you could just use Ramiro Pena in that role.

  • DERP

It was probably a good idea to start Chavez in Fangraphs: The Game today.

  • Greg

And before people start bitching about Girardi, its hindsight and a fallacy

    • OMG! Bagels!

I don’t know how you bitch about a manager with the best record in baseball and some of his best players injured or not performing to their full potential. I don’t get it.

      • Greg

        Trust me, people do.

      • Mike Stanley

Because that a-hole has lost 15 games in his last 45 instead of 0. What a dick.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I get questioning individual moves. Even the best managers make some questionable moves. If nothing else, it’s something to debate and talk about. I don’t get people who think a manager making a few decisions that are questionable is a horrible manager, clueless, or worst manager in baseball. Personally, I would have taken Nova out after six, but I still think Girardi is at least an average manager.

        • jjyank

Right. Even for managers and coaches, baseball is a game of failure. Shit is going to happen, to everybody. But at the end of the day, Girardi has managed a team that has the best record in the game, despite a few injuries and under-performances by some key players. As far as I’m concerned that inherently takes him out of the “clueless” or “bad manager” categories.

    • Tom

People were bitching before the HR… how is that “hinsdight”

You do understand hindsight means making the comment AFTER the result is known, right?

      • OMG! Bagels!

        Hindsight is 50/50

      • Get Phelps Up

        • Strat

          Is it park adjusted?

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If you play in a pitchers park or for the Red Sox, Rays, or Angels you automatically get a +5. If you’re white and speedy, and below 5’10″ you get another +5. If you’re a pitcher who can’t throw above 90, regardless of effectiveness again +5. If you’re latino and actually good you get a -10.

    • jjyank

Ted gets mad at lots of silly things.

  • Mike Stanley

It still baffles me how another team, one that wasn’t as successful as the Yankees have been, wouldn’t give a guy like Chavez or Ibanez the contract the Yankees did to just give him a shot as a platoon player. You could argue it’s not as if the Yankees needed him as much as another contender did. He wasn’t worth a $1.5 million shot for any number of contenders? Really?

    • jjyank

I got the impression that he liked it in New York and was each do it again or retire. I could be wrong though, but that’s what I’m recalling from the offseason. Also with some aging players, Chavez might have had more playing time here than other places.

      • Mike Stanley

I agree that the situation in NY is better in terms of being an obvious playing time opportunity, but I don’t remember much of a buzz from ANY team wanting him before 2011 or Ibanez this offseason. And I really don’t know why.

I’m sure the Red Sox would argue he would have just hampered Will Middlebrooks’ development *wanking motion*

        • jjyank

Probably wasn’t much buzz because it was widely known that he wanted to come back to NY or retire.

          • Mike Stanley

I mean before LAST year, not this year. This year was obviously NY or bust.

At this point, the guy’s earned a shot someplace next year. Hope it’s here.

            • jjyank

Last year was probably similar to Bartolo Colon. He was injured so much and not really considered much of a factor.

    • DM

It was Yankees or retirement for him.

    • OMG! Bagels!

Yankees like to say, “We’ll take this and this and that and him and him and oh, yeah, him. What’s that you say? Why him? Why not? We’re the Yankees. BAWHAHAHAHA.”

    • sangreal

Chavez said it was the Yankees or retirement

“This was the spot,” Chavez said. “If I was going to come back, this was where I wanted to be. If they had no interest, in my mind I was probably going to shut it down.”

8th inning one run game. Doesn’t want to go for the sweep. Pussy.

    • Greg

Tell that to his face. I dare you

      • OMG! Bagels!

Srsly. The only person Girardi wouldn’t mash into sand is Soriano.

      • Bartolo’s Colon

people yell a lot worse stuff than that while he walks back to the dugout. he would not care and would not do anything about it

  • Countryclub

I just don’t understand why qualls pitches meaningful innings on this team. He should be a garbage time pitcher or a sparingly used righty specialist.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

All he faced was a bunch of righties.

      • OMG! Bagels!

        Logic has no place here.

      • Countryclub

1st, I said sparingly. 2nd, the first 2 hitters of the 8th batted from the left side.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

how is qualls on this team??

  • Pat D

Eh, I’m not so sure they’re going to win this game in spite of themselves at this point.

    Okay DFA Qualls.

  • Pat D

Hmm. I see my reply to a reply is now its own comment.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Fuck Mike Scioscia.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Wow…that’s a dick move.

    • your mom

      We knew that was coming.

  • James A

I get the thinking, obviously the Yankees are losing and you don’t want to use Robertson 3 days in a row coming out of the break, so you hope Qualls can get anyone out, but I just wish we had someone who could actually get people out. Luckily that will be Joba soon

  • Andrew

I hate that Angel small ball crap.

  • your mom

We still won the series, the annoying Angels can go choke on some sausage.

    • Get Phelps Up

      This.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Now I want to win this game just because of that squeeze. You’re already up 3 with one of the better closers in baseball 3 outs away…you really don’t feel confident enough in your bullpen to get three outs with out pulling that squeeze bullshit.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

you cannot be serious. the yanks just scored 3 runs off downs two days ago.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The odds of that happening again are slim, but honestly to me Soscia is basically saying I’m scared of the Yankees so I’m going to sneak across as many bullshit runs as possible. If it had happen in the 6 th or 7th even I’d be ok…but I feel like that’s a pussy move in the 8th.

    • Tom

Eh… I dislike Scioscia, but he realizes the value of tack on runs.

Going from 3 to 4 runs may not drastically improve the overall chance of winning but it can help you in terms of who you bring in out of the pen, giving a high leverage arm a day off, etc…

This is why it can get annoying when Girardi sometimes won’t bother to pinch hit up 2 or 3 runs late….(but folks call that “nitpicking” here)

  • your mom

Yay Isringhausen, he’s like Lidge. We have a chance.

  • stuart a

too many mistakes to win even though Weaver was there for the taking. baserunning f ups all over the place and Nova not being close to good enough.

qualls will be off the team in about 3 weeks at the most…..

angels play little ball slightly better then the slow poke Yankees. WHen bobby wilson has 2 hits you are not winning…he is a worse hitter then Martin if that is possible…….

    • OMG! Bagels!

      Comment fail. Not enough Arod.

      • Get Phelps Up

        Needs…more…ARod!

    • Greg

I’ll put you third on the Hell list.

      • Pat D

You’ve gotten particularly edgy today, man. Take a few deep breaths, seriously.

  • stuart a

the squeeze was absolutley the right play for the angels. 3 runs is not 7 runs….

i would do the same if my team was capable of scoring a run outside of a homer……..

    • captain kiwi

      seriously… who is your team?

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      Ursula?

  • Greg

If the scores hold up, the two last place teams will be the only ones that gain ground.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

overall a good series, unfortunately nova sucked today, too many free outs, and qualls was qualls

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Even if we lose the only teams gaining ground would still be double digits back. It’s still upsetting because we seriously just handed them this game, but you know what tomorrow’s a new day.

    • Pat D

That’s right, Scarlett. Tomorrow is another day.

  • The Scheister of Broom

This place is out of control today. See-ya!

    • OMG! Bagels!

      Suck-sess.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

I’m so freaking sick of Mark Trumbo.

  • DERP

    I hate DJ Mitchell

    • your mom

Small sample size but he doesn’t look like anything special.

  • captain kiwi

YIKES. 2 out of 3 against the angels boys! nothing to scoff at.

    • Pat D

And they won the season series against them. Still wish they hadn’t dropped 2 of 3 in Anaheim, but, oh well.

      • captain kiwi

yeah. we’ll just have to make up for that in the postseason.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i know it been said here before, but is anything more stupid than throwing a hr ball back? i don’t get why people think that is a good idea

  • Karl Krawfid

Did DJ change his arm angle?

  • DERP

    Fuck you DJ. Enjoy AAA.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

not a good move there by dj

  • Brian S.

Detroit-LA Wild Card game sound good?

  • your mom

Time for the Angels to pad their stats I guess.

  • Karl Krawfid

I need one of those 2007 era Yankee comebacks in the 9th inning please.

  • DERP

I would rather have Terry Schiavo pitching here than Mitchell.

    • captain kiwi

      too soon?

    • Bartolo’s Colon

what a reference…hard to believe that was 7 years ago

  • your mom

Okay if they suicide squeeze here, then that’s a dick move. Not happening though.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

not looking forward to playing the angels for a a while, trout is unbelievable

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

If Ibanez’s spot comes up against Fieri and Girardi doesn’t pinch hit Andruw I will straight up lose it.

    • Pat D

      Avada Kedavra?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I will start releasing the Killing Curse like it was just legalized and going out of style.

      • captain kiwi

        lol’d

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      expect to lose it then
Girardi won’t PH Andruw vs. RHP.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, see my comment above yours. I feel like a god damned fool.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i’d be happy with just one run here

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Cano took a walk. Good omen?

    • Bartolo’s Colon

very happy with, ecstatic with more than two

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    TEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • your mom

    Yay Tex!

  • Karl Krawfid

    See Joe G’s fault.

Keep that 2007 era comeback going folks.

  • flamingo

    TEX!

  • Strat

Haha… Cone: ” Tex lifts and separates”

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Like the wonder bra?

      • Strat

        T-Cups

  • Karl Krawfid

Just get on base damn swish.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Take a strike, Raul, take a strike.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Keep the line moving Raul!

    2007 comeback in progress.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Hmm…i didn’t realize that if you called your self an r-tard it would be moderated.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Ahhh, I was wondering what you were talking about.

If they don’t PH Andruw now, I will join you in “losing it”.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Seriously…why the fuck is Ibanez still in this AB? It makes zero sense.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I kind of get it, with Chavez on deck, chance to get Jones up as possible tie run.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Time to get Andruw up in this bitch.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow…he’s not even going to let Frieri finish the AB…let’s see if Joe goes to Jones right here. I mean he’s already only 3 pitches away from getting on base.

  • your mom

    Scioscia not messing around here.

  • your mom

    Jones???

  • Karl Krawfid

    Did Jones play already?

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

How the fuck does he let Ibanez hit against a LHP?

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Like I was saying … great decision by Joe.

  • your mom

    Wow, it worked out. LOL.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    This … is getting interesting.

  • Strat

Here we go!! Time for Andruw.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Good result…terrible fucking process. Now if Jones isn’t in to PH for Chavez, I would be convinced that Joe is trying to loose this game.

    • Tom

Exactly. He probably wanted Jones (as opposed to Nix) swing for the game tying HR, but that was reliant on Ibanez getting on.

  • Tom Q

Pure luck saves Girardi a ton of post-game second-guessing.

  • your mom

    Angels have Walden right?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      On the DL.

  • 28 this year

Tying run to the plate, all you can ask when the ball is flying like it is today. But man, if the Yankees lose, its a lot more disheartening when they made it so interesting.

  • Karl Krawfid

    NM That works!

    Keep the 2007 comeback going.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    russell’s got this

  • Karl Krawfid

What the hell is he swinging at?

    All balls man.

  • Paul VuvuZuvella

    Don’t bunt Russell.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Nothing but sinkers down and away and Jones tried to pull every single one of them, you have to have better recognition than that Andruw.

  • Brent

    You suck Martin.

  • your mom

What’s the chances DJ goes deep?

  • Widget

    Thanks for nothing Martin.

    • your mom

At least he made only 1 out, not 2.

      • Widget

It really is the little things at this point with Martin.

  • Tom

I’m just happy there’s a righty on the mound so the fake to 3rd go to 1st move is off the table.

    • Tom

      errr. “lefty on the mound”

    • Tom

Damn… that last one was a hanger too…

  • Karl Krawfid

    Make my weekend complete Grandy!!!!!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

How are Grandy’s numbers career vs. Downs?

    • your mom

      Horrific.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      0-12, 8 K’s, 1 BB

    • Karl Krawfid

      0-12 8 k’s lol

  • captain kiwi

    MY HEART CAN’T TAKE IT

  • your mom

We need a grandslam here. All or nothing I say!!!!

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      you mean a Granderslam.

  • Strat

Nice job Jete. Grandy to the plate as the WR.

  • flamingo

A walk-off win here would be just the ticket.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Fuck… I thought he got it.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

FUCK YOU STERLING!!!! YOU GO TO HELL AND YOU DIE!!!

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

I was wondering how bad his call was on that one.

  • Widget

I hate how people blow the Angels. They win one steroid fueled world series and haven’t done anything since.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

FUCK YOU MICHAEL KAY. FUCK YOU.

  • Rich in NJ

Sterling is so awful it should be illegal.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Agreed.

    • eephus_pitch

Unfortunately I almost always have to listen to him and Ma.

  • 28 this year

    My heart just jumped.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No doubt in my mind it’ll come down to A-Rod.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Why would you say that? Do you like this torture?

    • flamingo

Never forget, he struck out to end the past two seasons.

      DOOM.

    • Tom Q

My hat is off to you, sir.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

good call, i had that feeling once they started to warm up the righty

  • your mom

If Granderson hits a grandslam, Arod will still groundout. . . .

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Monster at-bat by Granderson.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Always down to A-Rod.

Take us back to 2007 A-Rod!

  • your mom

Alright time to make your money stud. Prove “stuart a” wrong!!!

  • captain kiwi

i’ll have faith in you a-rod. someone’s got to :p

  • Rich in NJ

    The spotlight always finds A-Rod.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

always, baseball gods are trolls, i hope he proves them wrong today

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Alex, please for the love of god take a pitch. Just one. Please.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    Great AB by Granderson

  • your mom

    Right down the pipe

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Okay, okay. I have to say this.

WHy THE FUCK DID A-ROD SWING AT THE FIRST PITCH?!?!?

    • your mom

      2007 Arod crushes that.

    • DT

Because it was in the strike zone?

      • Rocky Road Redemption

I’m sorry, I honestly am not trying to be a dick, but that’s a terrible argument.

When you have good hitters up behind you and all you need to do is get on base to continue the game, you should be completely content with a walk. Swining at the first pitch 1) Increases the chances that first pitch is an out 2) Leaves out the fact that umps sometimes makes calls and 3) Just because a pitch is in the strike zone doesn’t make it a good one to hit.

By your argument, hitters should never go up to a bat planning to take the first pitch.

        • Rocky Road Redemption

          Typo fixing time:

1)Increases the chances that first pitch is an out 2) Leaves out the fact that umps sometimes make bad calls and 3) Just because a pitch is in the strike zone doesn’t make it a good one to hit.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

It’s sad how obvious it is that A-Rod is no longer A-Rod. He might still win it…but prime A-Rod would have crushed that last pitch.

  • DZ

I’m typing this before Arod ends the game with a K.

    • DZ

What do u know he popped it up

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Damn…that was deflating.

  • Rich in NJ

    They won the series. So…

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    weak

  • Karl Krawfid

    A-Rod and Joe Girardi man.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Good, A-Rod. Throw your helmet. You missed two meatballs.

The spotlight just always seems to find poor A-Rod.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Hard to call a pitch coming in at 97-99 a meatball.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

Hearing Coney talking about it was sad…mid-belt and inside. A classic A-Rod HR pitch. And he pops it up.

[For the record, it's hard to call any ML pitch a meatball. To a major leaguer, given the location, it was a meatball.]

        • Brian S.

It wasn’t inside it was outside.

          • Rocky Road Redemption

Then Coney said the wrong word. In any case, it was agreed by Kay and Coney that he should have been able to hit it, or at least get a piece of it to stay alive.

            • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

He did get a piece of it, he popped it up. I’m not sure Arod can catch up with that kind of heat anymore, especially in a 2 strike count.

              • Rocky Road Redemption

That’s the sad thing. He can’t catch up to a pitch that he used to crush.

[BTW, can we please not quibble? You know that I meant get a piece of it to foul it away.]

                • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, I just don’t get the difference. Old ARod would have missed the pitch by more and made less contact?

                  • Rocky Road Redemption

What I was thinking was that he would have caught up to the pitch but knocked it into the dirt. That generally means you caught it but got above it. Or hooked it like Granderson-a near miss.

Also, you can foul a pitch even straight back hard. A-Rod’s pop-up was very soft.

          • Evan3457

No, it was middle in, and moving in further.

  • wow

oh but go right ahead and pitch Qualls when we’re down by two or three.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Shoulda pitched DRob … every game … regardless of score

      • wow

no, not really. but there’s a couple better arms in that bullpen for those spots. Spare me the sarcasm, it’s old.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Not really though. Eppley likely wasn’t available. Mitchell sucks.
Maybe Logan, but facing mostly righties and he’s struggled lately, I’m not sure he was a much better option.

The problem is the bullpen has too many OOGY’s and mediocre pitchers right now.

    • Karl Krawfid

It was a 1 run game going into the 8th.

  • Widget

sad face. if only Qualls hadn’t pitched, if only the Yankees remembered how to run the bases, if only Nova didn’t suck today. Just one of those games.

    • Tom

      Yup.

The frustrating part is 2 of those 3 are (or should be) preventable.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

true, shit happens, but there is just no excuse for qualls. the phillies bullpen blows and they gave him up. he should not be on this team under any circumstance

  • flamingo

Oh well. At least we began a comeback.

  • captain kiwi

my girlfriend started playing “build me up buttercup”. i kinda want to put bugs in her dinner.

  • Ron

    5 more years

    • Rich in NJ

      Buy out?

  • Bartolo’s Colon

arod had a good game, but he muffed it in his last ab.

  • DT

Now lets just all blame Arod for the game. Lets forget about Nova, Qualls, Girardi’s pen management and Russell Martin. All Arod’s fault.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I think at least most of the regulars here are smarter than that. This game is on Nova, bull pen management, and being TOOTBLAN’d 4 different times.

    • Rocky Road Redemption

      All very true.
A-Rod’s one AB does not a game make.

Let’s not forget the two cookies that Grandyman missed too.

  • Anthony

Man, I can’t tell you how I was hoping for a walk off grand slam. Complete the comeback, get the sweep, and A-Rod would have passed Gehrig.

  • Brian S.

    UNLEASH THE TROLLS

  • Tom

The AB that will get lost in that 9th inning is the Jones AB against Downs.

He saw maybe 1 strike the whole AB but rather than waiting him out (like Jeter and Granderson did) he kept swinging for the 3 run HR on pitches low and/or low and outside.

    • Rocky Road Redemption

      Also true.

  • your mom

You win as a team, you lose as a team. Time to worry about the power-hitting Jays.

  • Greg

Well my driving magic almost worked. Give the Yanks credit for not giving up.

  • Kevin

Bottom line,Chad Qualls put us in too deep of a hole for us to crawl out of.
Girardi put up the white flag too soon and cost us the game.

    • Greg

In other words, Girardi should be fired.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

When did he say that? Saying, “I think Girardi made a mistake is not even close to equal to, “Girardi should be fired”.

    • Ppiddy

      I completely agree.
Can the team let Qualls go already?

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I’m going to go against prevailing opinion here and say that I don’t think Grandyman had a great ab.

Sure, I was very happy with a walk. It wasn’t like he made an out, and so I can’t say it was a bad ab. But he missed two cookies. I think it was Coney who said, “How many mistakes are you going to get in one AB?”

He missed a couple of very hittable balls.

  • stuart a

ANyone suprised with the pop out by arod? really…

he is avg player now. or as Cashaman said he is a above avg 3B…what a cut.. considering how bad the crew of 3B is, that is not exactly a statement of respect. the list of crappy 3b includes; the tampa crew, betemit, a 40 year old chipper jines, aramaiz ramirez, valbuena, callaspo, and the lsit goes on.

arod stinks bat him 6th and welcome to the new reality…..

nova was bad and qualls is bad. no problem with how Girardi used the pen, everygame is not a playoff game……

    • eephus_pitch

No opinion on that nice homerun he hit off Weaver?
      SHOCKING.

    • Ppiddy

Agreed that every game is not a playoff game but every game should be played with a respect for fundamentals and a commitment to winning.

Veteran Yankees lacked fundamentals today and Girardi lacked commitment by throwing in the towel and putting in Qualls and Mitchell.

You move on and use it to improve. They have the best record in baseball but strive to be even better. Never take it for granted.

      • The Scheister of Broom

        This

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Oh..My..God.. Stuart is growing you guys. He’s using decent punctuation. He’s admitting that A-Rod’s merely average, not terrible. He’s also commenting on things not referring to A-Rod. He also sees that while Alex might not be what he used to be that there really isn’t a replacement for him. Yay, Stu!!!

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      Victoria?

  • eephus_pitch

Nova gave up homers to Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis. I’m comfortable awarding him the goat horns for this one.

  • Christopher

I sat in Section 203 for that game, it was an oven, I baked, I’m dinner. Still, as long as the boys gave it run in the 9th, I mean a double away form winning after being five down, a 2-1 weekend against he Angels is something i can deal with.
