Game 88: For The Sweep

(AP Photo/Kathy Kmonicek)

I’m a simple guy, I just want the Yankees to keep winning series as the season progresses. Taking two of three in each series is a 108-win pace, so it seems like a good plan. The Yanks have already won this series, but a sweep of those annoying Angels would make for just a swell Sunday. Words can’t describe how much I would enjoy that third win today. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
DH Eric Chavez
C Russell Martin

RHP Ivan Nova

Today’s game starts a little after 1pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and TBS nationally. Enjoy.

    A Lineup! (vs RHP)

  2. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

It’s on TBS Nationally, not MLB.

  3. I really don’t understand what makes Jered so good…he doesn’t have an over powering fastball, his peripherals aren’t really anything to write home about, besides his walk rate. Yet there he is with a sub 2 ERA.

  4. Nathan says:

TBS crew gushing over Trout before the game.

    Shot #1.

    Have a good game, Nova!

  5. Pat D says:

Oh noez!! Linsanity gonna be over!!! Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

  6. Andruw's Smile says:

Surprised Wise isn’t getting the start in the OF.

  7. already want to kill Suzyn…it’s WeavER not WeavAH!!!!

  8. Andruw's Smile says:

Holy crap, Nova has 100 Ks? I may have known that, but man that is surprising.

  9. Wow…Aybar has power like that? I mean that ball was tattooed.

  10. Nathan says:

Didn’t Aybar just do that the other game? Almost same spot.

  11. Cy Pettitte says:

how does Aybar have 2 HRs in 3 games against us. unacceptable.

  12. Bartolo's Colon says:

  13. jjyank says:

Oh TBS announcers…that homer had nothing to do with the short porch.

    • whozat says:

…how does a homer drilled into the second deck have anything to do with the short porch? That was out in any stadium!

Sigh. Gotta reinforce the narrative, I guess.

      • jjyank says:

Something along the lines of “I don’t care how big or how small you are, if you square up on a ball it’s outta here with that short porch”. As the ball lands in the second deck, lol.

  14. jjyank says:

    God damn it.

  15. Nathan says:

    Awesome. Just awesome.

  16. Greg says:

Well we took two of three

  17. RI$P FTW says:

    It’s a conspiracy! It’s not Nova’s fault!

  18. DERP says:

    Fuck off Nova.

  19. Greg says:

Nova’s in a bit of a rough stretch. 3 bad starts so far.

  20. Bartolo's Colon says:

this reminds me of alds game five last year. nova immeadeatly gives up two dingers to put us in a big hole. i hope that he doesn’t come out with forearm pain. get it together man

  21. All well, all this tells me is the ball is flying out, if we can get a couple pitches up from Weaver we could win this game.

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

it’s ok guys, he knows how to win. we got this.

  23. Zooboy says:

Prediction: the Yankees will bring the tying run to the plate.

  24. jjyank says:

Alright boys, pick Nova back up! Weaver has no rocks today, let’s get him.

  25. Will The Thrill says:

Aybar and Pujols looked way too happy after hitting those homers. You would think it was the eighth inning. Calm down motherfuckers.

  26. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Jered, Hit the mascot with the next pitch.

  27. Cy Pettitte says:

Jered misses his rock pile already.

  28. Bartolo's Colon says:

not much is going to get by trout/bourgeous, need to hit it out of the park

  29. Andruw's Smile says:

Thank God for Trumbo in right. if they had another Bourjous/Trout defender in right I would lose my mind.

  30. Will (the other one) says:

Boy, I hope Weaver plans on living up in the zone like this all day.

  31. Hummingbird S. says:

    HR power!

  32. Bartolo's Colon says:

    cheap homer, it shouldn’t count

  33. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

    Alex is so done.

  34. DERP says:

    A-Rod slaying bitches.

  35. Greg says:

Well me and my big mouth…

  36. Will (the other one) says:

    Porch it, motherf**ker!

  37. Get Phelps Up says:

    stuart is crying.

  38. jjyank says:

A-ROD!!!! That was an A-Rod of old oppo field shot, even if it was a bit if a YS3 cheapie.

Hey Greg, the game isn’t over buddy.

  39. Nathan says:

RBIs with RISP, a game winner (hit!) from Martin and an A-Rod HR?

ASB has done wonders for this team.

  40. DERP says:

Not gonna lie, I’d probably have sex with Alex.

  41. Andruw's Smile says:

First home run of the season off a good pitcher! I was told that wasn’t allowed.

  42. Eirias says:

There is no phrase I dislike more in baseball commentary than “going oppo.”

  43. Strat says:

Just like that… Tie game. Looks like the ball is flyin’ today.

  44. Kramerica Industries says:

I awoke from a mid-morning malaise just in time to see that Nova had surrendered two home runs*, including another home run to Erick Aybar, for a lovely start. Fortunately, like yesterday, a two run homer just brought things back even. So, we begin anew.

*Dick Stockton said this was the first time Nova had ever allowed two first inning home runs in his career. Sadly, when considering the playoffs, you realize that’s not true. Just a painful reminder.

  45. I thought this game was over after last inning

    I thought A-Rod was done

I thought you couldn’t beat good pitchers with the homer

  46. Cy Pettitte says:

wow everything is getting crushed. Weaver isn’t fooling anyone.

  47. Greg says:

All balls are being hit hard. Even Jeter’s out was hard

  48. DERP says:

Jered Weaver struggling against a good team? NO WAI!

  49. stuart a says:

:: sits silently crying in corner ::

  50. Cy Pettitte says:

    Hamiltonian bat toss

  51. DERP says:

    Spike Lee lol

  52. jjyank says:

Haha Spike Lee got the bat.

  53. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

I think Tex was aiming for Spike

  54. Nathan says:

    SPIKE LEE!!! That’s awesome.

  55. Brian S. says:

  56. If I was a player, and I was incredibly hot, and I lost a bat into the stands, I’d call time grab another bat and see if my old bat was ok. If it was I’d trade the new bat for the other one.

    Tex should’ve done the same.

  57. OMG! Bagels! says:

Arod says boo this motherfuckers and goes especially to you stuart a wherever you are.

  58. RI$P FTW says:

Why is Swisher wearing sunglasses while at-bat on a cloudy day?

  59. Hummingbird S. says:

that was a good first inning… now they just need to stop whiffing on that big curve and Weaver will be out before the 5th

  60. Get Phelps Up says:

Bobby V. is blaming Youkilis for their poor relationship AFTER the comments about weather his head was in the game.

    Too funny.

  61. jjyank says:

    Way to settle down, Ivan.

  62. Greg says:

    Good recovery Nova. Quick too.

  63. DERP says:

The Orioles just allowed a leadoff homer

  64. Greg says:

I think the best thing about that Gary Thorne call is just the way he yells “DON MATTINGLY!”, not the “hold on to the roof”

  65. Athenian says:

Man! What line up that would be….. King Felix, CC, Pineda, Nova……Cash, get on the phone and do it.

    • Nathan says:

If Cash couldn’t get King Felix with Montero as bait, I doubt they’d deal him now with what the Yankees could offer.

  66. DERP says:

Chavez will do something good here.

  67. Bartolo's Colon says:

can’t be too many uglier swings than ibanez

  68. Positives from that play: runner in scoring position now, and Russel didn’t GIDP.

  69. jjyank says:

That might have been a bunt hit if it got on the ground quicker.

  70. Hummingbird S. says:

    good idea but bad execution

  71. Mike Axisa says:

Free outs! Swing the damn bat, guys.

  72. jjyank says:

  73. Meh, at least the run scored…but poor baserunning there Derek.

  74. Mike Axisa says:

Didn’t someone just go on and on about Jeter never making a baserunning mistake a few weeks ago? That’s two in the last six games.

  75. Hummingbird S. says:

nice hit, but goddamnit, STOP RUNNING INTO OUTS!!

  76. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Wow, Jeet drops a flyball last week, and makes a baserunning mistake this week. Head explodes.

  77. Bartolo's Colon says:

yea for giving them two outs, but ill take a run

  78. DERP says:

    Thanks Derek

  79. Greg says:

Cant get too upset about that. I think it was a set play by the Angels.

  80. Hummingbird S. says:

Shutdown inning Nova, please. Dont walk a garbage hitter in front of Trout..

  81. Mike Axisa says:

    Holy crap Curtis.

  82. DERP says:

    Granderson is the tits.

  83. jjyank says:

    Wow what a catch Grandy!

  84. Hummingbird S. says:

    Grandy!!! Beautiful!

  85. Cy Pettitte says:

    GRANDY!!! take that Angels outfield.

  86. Meh, Trout would’ve made it look easy-MSM.

  87. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Wow … that was a helluva catch Grandy, Trout-like even.

  88. Nathan says:

Granderson just saved me about 2-3 shots! AWESOME play!

  89. Get Phelps Up says:

    Grandy Trout’d it!

  90. DERP says:

    Yes, but the UZR

  91. flamingo says:

    Oh my god Grandy

  92. Athenian says:

    What a play!

  93. Greg says:

Ump is giving the outside curve to Weaver

  94. DERP says:

Miguel Gonzalez is pitching for the Orioles today. The Orioles misspelled his name on his jersey. They spelled is ‘Gonzales.’

  95. CUYanks says:

Where was it they said that a player explained Jered Weaver’s splits by saying it was almost impossible to pick up his ball off of the rocks in center field in Anaheim?

  96. Brian S. says:

    singles hitter

  97. jjyank says:

Robbie continues to be en fuego.

  98. Get Phelps Up says:

Jered pitching like his older brother out there.

  99. DM says:

    Weaver’s got nothing today.

  100. Brian S. says:

I have an off-topic question. Is 2014 the only year we have to get under 189 AAV? And then we can go back to 200-210 in 2015?

    • jjyank says:

I think we just have to get under for 1 year, then it resets everything. If/when they go back over, the penalties start again but it starts at a lower penalty and gradually climes each year their over. So if they get under for one year, they save a lot of money for a next couple of years, until the penalties reach the levels they are currently paying.

      That’s my understanding.

    • Cuso says:

Yes. They need to reset the luxury tax cumulative counter.

    • whozat says:

The short answer is yes, at least for a while. There’s some kind of escalator clause that compounds every consecutive year you’re over the limit. By dropping under for one year, you reset all that.

    • Yes, but there are added bonuses for staying under in 2015 as well. Like a break on revenue sharing or something.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

They just need to go under for one year to reset the luxury tax penalties.
They need to go under for 2 consecutive years to completely reset the new Market Disqualification rebate penalties.

  101. jjyank says:

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

  102. Cy Pettitte says:

    ummmm what.

  103. Kramerica Industries says:

    Did that seriously just happen?

  104. Mike Axisa says:

    Three outs on the bases.

  105. Get Phelps Up says:

    Wow…just wow.

  106. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Bunch of fucking morons

    Double TOOTBLAN

  107. RI$P FTW says:

    How embarrassing.

  108. Hummingbird S. says:

wow… this is pathetic and inexcusable

  109. TOOTBLAN 3 times in the last two innings…that’s un-fucking-acceptable.

  110. Greg says:

ARod should have gone immediately as Cano got in a rundown.

  111. Nathan says:

Are you shiting me? That’s just HORRIBLE base running.

  112. Will (the other one) says:

Okay, so that may have been the worst baseball play I’ve ever seen. But, hey, we’re still in the lead!

  113. whozat says:

Jon and Suzyn LOVE to act like a single game refutes long standing trends. I hate, hate, hate them. Like…if over the course of the season, ARod has better numbers as a DH, a short-porch-special and a single don’t invalidate that trend.

  114. Brian S. says:

lol wtf was that. A-Rod needed to go way sooner than he did.

  115. RI$P FTW says:

$200 million of base running right there.

  116. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    A new kind of RISPFAIL

  117. TommyBoy says:

  118. flamingo says:

    How about no.

  119. Kramerica Industries says:

I think that’s the third time the fake-third/throw-first trick has worked for the Angels against the Yankees, in the past calendar year or so.

I don’t think I’ve seen it work in any other game I’ve watched in the past five years, aside.

  120. Greg says:

Now of course, we dont know if Tex gets the job done, but it is annoying

  121. Gameday is still trying to process what happened to end last inning.

  122. Will The Thrill says:

What the fuck was that? Way to help out Weaver and the Angels! Yankees should know that and his team are always looking for ways to steal outs. Fucking concentrate! Also Joe Girardi has to realize that without Gardner the Yankees are about the slowest team in the majors. Stop sending our slow ass runners.

  123. Tom says:

Is it just too hard for them to stand on the bases?

They’ve already given Weaver a free inning with 3 outs in 3 innings.

  124. Get Phelps Up says:

Machael Kay was happy about that play just so he could talk about the Jeff Nelson move.

  125. I hate John and Suzyn they’re going on and on about good pitching vs good hitting and small ball parks I had no idea if there was anyone out or anybody on base until Gameday finally caught up.

    • PJ says:

I agree, I deliver pizza’s way out here in Albuquerque and rely on John and Suzyn to keep me up to date on the game as i’m working. I will listen the entire way to a delivery and never once get a score. Then, by some cruel twist of fate, I had to listen to Suzyn’s bafflement of how you can order a pizza online and have it delivered…while delivering pizza’s placed by people online and just wanting a score. I’ve never screamed at my radio so loudly before.

  126. Hummingbird S. says:

I wonder why the keep throwing fastballs to Trumbo… it’s just dumb

  127. Hummingbird S. says:

4 pitch walk to a garbage hitter, sound strategy.

  128. The Scheister of Doom says:

My iPad died as I was about to send the following at the end of the last half inning, I must say that was by far some of the worst base running I’ve EVER seen with a damn DB on the base paths. They should both be thoroughly embarrassed.

    • The Scheister of Doom says:

DP, not a DB. They are both DBs for that though. Plus A-Rods RBI totals are low, so I blame him.

  129. Kevin says:

Baseball gods are about to punish the Yankees…

  130. DERP says:

    You Raul.

  131. Hummingbird S. says:

that was kinda scary but it worked out

  132. jjyank says:

Wow Ibanez. I thought he was gonna pass out from running that far :P

  133. Kramerica Industries says:

With Ibanez being the LFer, that spooked me the further Ibanez had to run.

  134. How easy of a catch was that, because Sterling just tried to give me a heart attack acting like it was inches away from dropping.

  135. Cuso says:

    Andruw doesn’t get that ball.

  136. flamingo says:

    Nice job by Nova!

  137. captain kiwi says:

uh… “interesting” game so far? lol. hopped on gameday just in time to see it freeze thanks to that awesome double-play with a-rod and cano. way to get out of that inning nova!

  138. jjyank says:

I hate election years…same commercials bashing both sides over and over. There’s a reason I stuck with IR instead of domestic in school.

  139. DERP says:

I totally forgot that DJ Mitchell was still on the team.

  140. Greg says:

Now, hindsight noted, that would have been a DP.

  141. captain kiwi says:

jesus, how was swish taking? lol awesome

  142. Mauro says:

I would trade curtis granderson and some prospects FOR tim lincecum .

  143. Brian S. says:

    God damn Ibanez is terrible.

  144. Hummingbird S. says:

It seems like the lead should be a lot bigger.. they are hitting Weaver hard.

  145. Tom says:

Weaver has retired 8 batters through 4 innings (and one via a bunt for hit attempt).

  146. Cuso says:

People are getting way too beholden to mathematics and are letting it jade their vision of reality.

  147. Countryclub says:

Nova’s control: not very good today

  148. Kramerica Industries says:

Ibanez the speed demon out there.

  149. Countryclub says:

    Poor ibanez. Hurry back, Gardner.

  150. Brian S. says:

11 flyouts 3 groundouts for Nova. I wanted his FIP to get better but :(

    • boogie down says:

FIP takes into account HR’s, BB’s, and K’s, so the HR’s he’s allowed have a massive impact on his FIP while the way he records his non-strikeout outs has absolutely none.

  151. Ibanez get’s that cause he hustles

  152. Cy Pettitte says:

    are you fucking kidding me?

  153. Mike Axisa says:

The bunt worked so well the first time, might as well try it again.

  154. Hummingbird S. says:

    this is just pathetic…

  155. Greg says:

Now that was a bad idea. That’s 4 outs given away

  156. Kramerica Industries says:

Why in the world would Martin try that again?

And talk about leaving Chavez out to dry.

  157. Brian S. says:

How are we winning this game?

  158. flamingo says:

    Chavez has been really great.

  159. Countryclub says:

What the fuck is Martin doing

  160. whozat says:

    well, that was fucking stupid.

  161. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Can we please give away more outs?

The Yankees are not making this nearly easy enough for Weaver.

  162. flamingo says:

  163. Tom says:

This is just insanity… Weaver has retired 10 batters in 5 innings.

He has retired 3 hitters just once in an inning this game.

    • Greg says:

Did you count the first bunt? Because he was trying for a hit.

    • Tom says:

Oh and 2 of the 10 hitters he has retired have been via bunts.

So when the Yankees have chosen to actually swing, he’s gotten 8 batters out through 5innings.

  164. CUYanks says:

It also seems that his technique on the bunt is basically asking for a pop up.

  165. Arya says:

The most powerful lineup in baseball and they send a catcher up there to bunt into 3 outs and they run into 2 more outs with runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Awful strategy.

  166. stuart a says:

giving away outs left and right.

3 giveaways. 20% of the outs by yankee mistakes………….
gving guys like weaver free outs is a problem!

  167. captain kiwi says:

i hate how much people use the word “fail” but that martin’s definitely merited it.

  168. Countryclub says:

Boy, if the yanks lose this game it will sting as a fan. It’s like they’re trying to give it away (I know they’re not).

  169. Hummingbird S. says:

look at that, they know how to round first base without getting picked off

  170. Greg says:

Well at the beginning of the series I expected we’d lose 2 of 3. So my expectations are already met.

    They just look off today.

  171. Kramerica Industries says:

Callaspo is a pain in the ass.

  172. Kramerica Industries says:

Granderson has been putting on a clinic defensively today.

  173. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Grandy saving Nova today

  174. Hummingbird S. says:

at least the D is working today

  175. Strat says:

Another great one by the Grandyman!

  176. flamingo says:

How many pitches has this at bat been?!

  177. Cy Pettitte says:

some amazing catches after possible contract extension negotiations started recently with Cano and Grandy. coincidence? lol.

  178. Cy Pettitte says:

    HR to scrubs. loser.

  179. Hummingbird S. says:

Nova has no command of his fastball today… he’s missing the glove on every fastball.

And now the meltdown is complete. Awful game.

  180. dontchaknow says:

godfucking damnit nova.. this isn’t yr day :/

  181. Greg says:

Well you cant really blame the offense. Nova just didn’t have it today

  182. Kramerica Industries says:

    Maicer Izturis?

Unreal. Three home runs in this series by Aybar and Izturis. That’s hideous.

  183. This AB and the one before it to Callaspo is why I hate the Angels.

  184. The Scheister of Doom says:

    Nova sucks.

  185. Widget says:

Now that is pathetic. Bad enough they have given up 2 homers to Aybar this series, but Izturis? That guy has even less power.

  186. Mike Stanley says:

Honest question: am I thickheaded for being happy whenever they get ANYTHING good out of Nova because I don’t think he’s any better than average at best?

    • Brian S. says:

Depends on your definition of average. He’s a 4 ERA/FIP guy that is both overrated and underrated because of his win total (overrated by casual fans that love wins, underrated by people that think he sucks and is only a product of run support). He’s really nice to have since he is cheap and he has potential to get better.

  187. Across The Pond says:

Unless I’ve read it wrong,Granderson rates a -15 with UZR. How can anyone take those metrics seriously?

  188. TommyBoy says:

Nova can’t be trusted. And the Yankees ‘ran’ themselves out of this game.

  189. Greg says:

Is Nova still a quality pitcher that the Yankees have developed because his ERA is not good.

  190. The Scheister of Doom says:

Maicer Izturis would hit 15-20 HRs yearly if he played half his games at YS3.

  191. Athenian says:

With better base running, that home run should have tied the game.

  192. TommyBoy says:

Ivan Nova, the most overrated pitcher in baseball.

  193. stuart a says:

arod hit a homer and now has a whopping 38 rbi’s. throw a parade.

maybe he get get his slugging % to the top 5 on the team.

arod still stinks, I hope he proves me wrong but i doubt it….

  194. Mike Stanley says:

  195. Hummingbird S. says:

    Awesome day for Grandy!

  196. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Quite a game for the Grandy man.

  197. Kramerica Industries says:

    …and back within a run.

    Try getting some more.

  198. Get Phelps Up says:

    Trade him for Lincecum!

  199. flamingo says:

  200. The Scheister of Doom says:

  201. jjyank says:

Shit, stepped outside to get yesterday’s mail and missed the run. How’d they get it?

  202. The Scheister of Doom says:

A-Rod…Cano would’ve taken that final pitch. Terrible.

  203. OMG! Bagels! says:

Grandy. Sticking to the narrative. Go boyz.

  204. Mike Stanley says:

Remember, if the Yankees win, it doesn’t count, because they hit too many homers.

But if the Angels win, it’s because they showed power.

  205. stuart b says:

My brother needs to stop posting here since everyone does not like him.

  206. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Long leash for Nova …?

  207. Cy Pettitte says:

why is Nova even in this game? Girardi punting.

  208. Karl Krawfid says:

    Nova is garbage man.

  209. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Why on earth is Nova still in this game?

  210. Greg says:

You can question why Nova started the seventh but Girardi wanted to try and get him line for a win.

  211. your mom says:

Ride down the friggin pipe. Nice job Nova.

  212. flamingo says:

    Let’s pull Nova.

  213. TommyBoy says:

WTF is Nova still in the game!

  214. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Time to get Nova out of there.

  215. Kramerica Industries says:

Not sure why Nova started that inning, and pretty shocking that Aybar continues to be a pain in the ass, eh?

  216. Greg says:

Also I think Girardi realizes this game means little, so why waste the pen in a game of little importance

  217. Cy Pettitte says:

the old let the starter stay in and put runners on 1st and 3rd then pull him

  218. Widget says:

Go yard Pujols and just end the misery today. Thanks.

  219. Mike Axisa says:

Oh boy, Chad Qualls. Probably better off leaving Nova in the game.

  220. Arya says:

So Nova had just given up the lead and then some then we cut the lead to one and Girardi responds by sending Nova out there for another inning. No surprise that Nova, who had little control today, will give up more runs and add to our deficit. And this 2 games after the bullpen just had 4 days off. Inexcusable.

  221. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Qualls vs. Pujols?

  222. TommyBoy says:

As usual Clueless Joe takes a pitcher out 2 or 3 hitters to late.

    • jjyank says:

Clueless Joe? You know he’s managing the team with the best record in all of baseball right? Can’t be that clueless.

      • TommyBoy says:

LMAO at you! They win in spite of Clueless Joe, not because of him!

        • jjyank says:

He’s not the best manager in the game or anything, but he’s far from clueless. Girardi is a great bullpen manager and has gotten great production out of his bench by putting them in positions to succeed. They don’t necessarily win directly because of him, but I’m thinking it should be “Clueless TommyBoy”.

  223. Mike Stanley says:

    Does This Ball Land?

    1. Yes!
    2. No!
    3. I need a bigger telescope.

  224. Greg says:

Heew we go again, blaming Girardi for a game that doesnt matter.

  225. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Heads up play by Tex.

  226. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Heads up defense by Tex.

Run scores, but you can’t complain that outcome.

  227. Cy Pettitte says:

    base running clinic today

  228. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Couldn’t Tex just have stepped on the base.

  229. Cy Pettitte says:

    there’s like a 5% chance Qualls doesn’t give up a 500ft HR to Trumbo

  230. DERP says:

I hoping we see DJ Mitchell next inning. He is still here, right?

  231. your mom says:

    Good job Qualls.

  232. The Scheister of Doom says:

I would love to get into Girardi’s head and find out why on earth he left Nova in, that one extra run could make a huge difference.

  233. Mike Axisa says:

Andrew McCutchen is singlehandedly proving that lineup protection is meaningless.

  234. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Too Many Homers

  235. Mike Stanley says:

  236. Cy Pettitte says:

Eric Chavez is so fucking awesome.

  237. jjyank says:

Chavez, I am so glad you decided not to retire in the offseason!

  238. DERP says:

    Chavez is so solid.

  239. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Weaver’s reaction was priceless.

  240. Mike Axisa says:

The Yankees are going to end up winning this game in spite of themselves.

  241. DM says:

I can’t believe we gave Chavez a major league deal.

  242. DERP says:

It was probably a good idea to start Chavez in Fangraphs: The Game today.

  243. Greg says:

And before people start bitching about Girardi, its hindsight and a fallacy

    • OMG! Bagels! says:

I don’t know how you bitch about a manager with the best record in baseball and some of his best players injured or not performing to their full potential. I don’t get it.

      • Greg says:

        Trust me, people do.

      • Mike Stanley says:

Because that a-hole has lost 15 games in his last 45 instead of 0. What a dick.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

I get questioning individual moves. Even the best managers make some questionable moves. If nothing else, it’s something to debate and talk about. I don’t get people who think a manager making a few decisions that are questionable is a horrible manager, clueless, or worst manager in baseball. Personally, I would have taken Nova out after six, but I still think Girardi is at least an average manager.

        • jjyank says:

Right. Even for managers and coaches, baseball is a game of failure. Shit is going to happen, to everybody. But at the end of the day, Girardi has managed a team that has the best record in the game, despite a few injuries and under-performances by some key players. As far as I’m concerned that inherently takes him out of the “clueless” or “bad manager” categories.

    • Tom says:

People were bitching before the HR… how is that “hinsdight”

You do understand hindsight means making the comment AFTER the result is known, right?

  244. jjyank says:

I just dropped Scott Downs from my fantasy team the other day, and someone else picked him up. So I hope the Yankees destroy him.

  245. DERP says:

Remember how Ted Nelson was mad that Mike prefered Chavez to Nick Punto?

  246. Mike Stanley says:

It still baffles me how another team, one that wasn’t as successful as the Yankees have been, wouldn’t give a guy like Chavez or Ibanez the contract the Yankees did to just give him a shot as a platoon player. You could argue it’s not as if the Yankees needed him as much as another contender did. He wasn’t worth a $1.5 million shot for any number of contenders? Really?

    • jjyank says:

I got the impression that he liked it in New York and was each do it again or retire. I could be wrong though, but that’s what I’m recalling from the offseason. Also with some aging players, Chavez might have had more playing time here than other places.

      • Mike Stanley says:

I agree that the situation in NY is better in terms of being an obvious playing time opportunity, but I don’t remember much of a buzz from ANY team wanting him before 2011 or Ibanez this offseason. And I really don’t know why.

I’m sure the Red Sox would argue he would have just hampered Will Middlebrooks’ development *wanking motion*

        • jjyank says:

Probably wasn’t much buzz because it was widely known that he wanted to come back to NY or retire.

          • Mike Stanley says:

I mean before LAST year, not this year. This year was obviously NY or bust.

At this point, the guy’s earned a shot someplace next year. Hope it’s here.

            • jjyank says:

Last year was probably similar to Bartolo Colon. He was injured so much and not really considered much of a factor.

    • DM says:

It was Yankees or retirement for him.

    • OMG! Bagels! says:

Yankees like to say, “We’ll take this and this and that and him and him and oh, yeah, him. What’s that you say? Why him? Why not? We’re the Yankees. BAWHAHAHAHA.”

    • sangreal says:

Chavez said it was the Yankees or retirement

“This was the spot,” Chavez said. “If I was going to come back, this was where I wanted to be. If they had no interest, in my mind I was probably going to shut it down.”

  247. jjyank says:

    TBS Crew: “Sweeps are great.”

Yes, thank you for the insightful comments.

  248. Mike Stanley says:

    You know what’s fun?

Checking the Red Sox score to see if they’ll still be 11 games back.

  249. your mom says:

Damn I hate the Angels and their small ball. No excuse walking Izturdis.

  250. TommyBoy says:

    Chad Qualls blows!

  251. Chad Qualls is still in this game because?

  252. Mike Stanley says:

    Ben Sheets!!!!!!!!!

    6 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K.

  253. The Scheister of Broom says:

I hope a DP ends this threat and they start one of their own in the bottom of the 8th!

  254. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

And that’s the downside of having Raul Ibanez play the field.

  255. Greg says:

    Well what can you do?

  256. Mike Axisa says:

Chad Qualls sucks. Bring in someone that can miss a bat, please.

  257. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Yankees could really use another quality non-OOGY.

  258. Karl Krawfid says:

Joe G makes me so damn mad.

Qualls did his job last inning.

8th inning one run game. Doesn’t want to go for the sweep. Pussy.

  259. DERP says:

If Mike Trout can’t get on base here, then he sucks and should retire.

  260. TommyBoy says:

Clueless “FUCKING” Joe! Chad “Blows Dick” Qualls!

  261. DERP says:

In a few weeks, this will be Joba.

  262. Countryclub says:

I just don’t understand why qualls pitches meaningful innings on this team. He should be a garbage time pitcher or a sparingly used righty specialist.

  263. Bartolo's Colon says:

how is qualls on this team??

  264. Pat D says:

Eh, I’m not so sure they’re going to win this game in spite of themselves at this point.

  265. your mom says:

    Okay DFA Qualls.

  266. wow says:

that’s what what happens when you pitch Chad friggin Qualls.

  267. Greg says:

We took 2 of 4. That’s more then what I expected.

  268. Athenian says:

Girardi strikes again! When he tries to manage he just fucks up. Good grief.

  269. Greg says:

And the nitpickers and ungrateful wretches come out.

  270. DT says:

Girardi today has been terrible…Leave Nova out too long, then Leave Chad Qualls out too long. Really?

  271. Mike Stanley says:

I don’t get the anger. I think everyone knows perfectly well how much Qualls sucks, including Girardi. In a few weeks, this is a Joba or maybe even Aardsma or maybe even in a perfect world Feliciano situation.

  272. The Scheister of Broom says:

A little late and you pressed the wrong buttons this time Joe. I’ll put my Broom away on my next post and regain Doom.

  273. DERP says:

Some of you really don’t deserve to root for a good team. Go root for the Orioles.

  274. Pat D says:

    Wow. Just wow.

  275. wow says:

why bring in logan now? what a waste.

  276. Pat D says:

Hmm. I see my reply to a reply is now its own comment.

  277. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Fuck Mike Scioscia.

  278. James A says:

I get the thinking, obviously the Yankees are losing and you don’t want to use Robertson 3 days in a row coming out of the break, so you hope Qualls can get anyone out, but I just wish we had someone who could actually get people out. Luckily that will be Joba soon

  279. Andrew says:

I hate that Angel small ball crap.

  280. your mom says:

We still won the series, the annoying Angels can go choke on some sausage.

  281. Now I want to win this game just because of that squeeze. You’re already up 3 with one of the better closers in baseball 3 outs away…you really don’t feel confident enough in your bullpen to get three outs with out pulling that squeeze bullshit.

    • Bartolo's Colon says:

you cannot be serious. the yanks just scored 3 runs off downs two days ago.

      • The odds of that happening again are slim, but honestly to me Soscia is basically saying I’m scared of the Yankees so I’m going to sneak across as many bullshit runs as possible. If it had happen in the 6 th or 7th even I’d be ok…but I feel like that’s a pussy move in the 8th.

    • Tom says:

Eh… I dislike Scioscia, but he realizes the value of tack on runs.

Going from 3 to 4 runs may not drastically improve the overall chance of winning but it can help you in terms of who you bring in out of the pen, giving a high leverage arm a day off, etc…

This is why it can get annoying when Girardi sometimes won’t bother to pinch hit up 2 or 3 runs late….(but folks call that “nitpicking” here)

  282. your mom says:

Yay Isringhausen, he’s like Lidge. We have a chance.

  283. stuart a says:

too many mistakes to win even though Weaver was there for the taking. baserunning f ups all over the place and Nova not being close to good enough.

qualls will be off the team in about 3 weeks at the most…..

angels play little ball slightly better then the slow poke Yankees. WHen bobby wilson has 2 hits you are not winning…he is a worse hitter then Martin if that is possible…….

  284. stuart a says:

the squeeze was absolutley the right play for the angels. 3 runs is not 7 runs….

i would do the same if my team was capable of scoring a run outside of a homer……..

  285. Greg says:

If the scores hold up, the two last place teams will be the only ones that gain ground.

  286. Bartolo's Colon says:

overall a good series, unfortunately nova sucked today, too many free outs, and qualls was qualls

  287. Even if we lose the only teams gaining ground would still be double digits back. It’s still upsetting because we seriously just handed them this game, but you know what tomorrow’s a new day.

  288. The Scheister of Broom says:

This place is out of control today. See-ya!

  289. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’m so freaking sick of Mark Trumbo.

  290. DERP says:

    I hate DJ Mitchell

  291. captain kiwi says:

YIKES. 2 out of 3 against the angels boys! nothing to scoff at.

  292. Bartolo's Colon says:

i know it been said here before, but is anything more stupid than throwing a hr ball back? i don’t get why people think that is a good idea

  293. Karl Krawfid says:

Did DJ change his arm angle?

  294. DERP says:

    Fuck you DJ. Enjoy AAA.

  295. Bartolo's Colon says:

not a good move there by dj

  296. Brian S. says:

Detroit-LA Wild Card game sound good?

  297. your mom says:

Time for the Angels to pad their stats I guess.

  298. Karl Krawfid says:

I need one of those 2007 era Yankee comebacks in the 9th inning please.

  299. DERP says:

I would rather have Terry Schiavo pitching here than Mitchell.

  300. your mom says:

Okay if they suicide squeeze here, then that’s a dick move. Not happening though.

  301. Bartolo's Colon says:

not looking forward to playing the angels for a a while, trout is unbelievable

  302. If Ibanez’s spot comes up against Fieri and Girardi doesn’t pinch hit Andruw I will straight up lose it.

  303. Bartolo's Colon says:

i’d be happy with just one run here

  304. your mom says:

    Yay Tex!

  305. Karl Krawfid says:

    See Joe G’s fault.

Keep that 2007 era comeback going folks.

  306. flamingo says:

  307. Strat says:

Haha… Cone: ” Tex lifts and separates”

  308. Karl Krawfid says:

Just get on base damn swish.

  309. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Take a strike, Raul, take a strike.

  310. Karl Krawfid says:

    Keep the line moving Raul!

    2007 comeback in progress.

  311. Hmm…i didn’t realize that if you called your self an r-tard it would be moderated.

  312. Mike Axisa says:

Time to get Andruw up in this bitch.

  313. Wow…he’s not even going to let Frieri finish the AB…let’s see if Joe goes to Jones right here. I mean he’s already only 3 pitches away from getting on base.

  314. your mom says:

    Scioscia not messing around here.

  315. your mom says:

  316. Karl Krawfid says:

    Did Jones play already?

  317. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

How the fuck does he let Ibanez hit against a LHP?

  318. your mom says:

    Wow, it worked out. LOL.

  319. Mike Axisa says:

    This … is getting interesting.

  320. Strat says:

Here we go!! Time for Andruw.

  321. Good result…terrible fucking process. Now if Jones isn’t in to PH for Chavez, I would be convinced that Joe is trying to loose this game.

    • Tom says:

Exactly. He probably wanted Jones (as opposed to Nix) swing for the game tying HR, but that was reliant on Ibanez getting on.

  322. Tom Q says:

Pure luck saves Girardi a ton of post-game second-guessing.

  323. your mom says:

    Angels have Walden right?

  324. 28 this year says:

Tying run to the plate, all you can ask when the ball is flying like it is today. But man, if the Yankees lose, its a lot more disheartening when they made it so interesting.

  325. Karl Krawfid says:

    NM That works!

    Keep the 2007 comeback going.

  326. Bartolo's Colon says:

    russell’s got this

  327. Karl Krawfid says:

What the hell is he swinging at?

    All balls man.

  328. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

    Don’t bunt Russell.

  329. Nothing but sinkers down and away and Jones tried to pull every single one of them, you have to have better recognition than that Andruw.

  330. Brent says:

    You suck Martin.

  331. your mom says:

What’s the chances DJ goes deep?

  332. Widget says:

    Thanks for nothing Martin.

  333. Tom says:

I’m just happy there’s a righty on the mound so the fake to 3rd go to 1st move is off the table.

  334. Karl Krawfid says:

    Make my weekend complete Grandy!!!!!

  335. How are Grandy’s numbers career vs. Downs?

  336. captain kiwi says:

  337. your mom says:

We need a grandslam here. All or nothing I say!!!!

  338. Strat says:

Nice job Jete. Grandy to the plate as the WR.

  339. flamingo says:

A walk-off win here would be just the ticket.

  340. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Fuck… I thought he got it.

  342. Widget says:

I hate how people blow the Angels. They win one steroid fueled world series and haven’t done anything since.

  343. Rocky Road Redemption says:

  344. Rich in NJ says:

Sterling is so awful it should be illegal.

  345. 28 this year says:

    My heart just jumped.

  346. Mike Axisa says:

No doubt in my mind it’ll come down to A-Rod.

  347. your mom says:

If Granderson hits a grandslam, Arod will still groundout. . . .

  348. Mike Axisa says:

    Monster at-bat by Granderson.

  349. Karl Krawfid says:

    Always down to A-Rod.

Take us back to 2007 A-Rod!

  350. your mom says:

Alright time to make your money stud. Prove “stuart a” wrong!!!

  351. captain kiwi says:

i’ll have faith in you a-rod. someone’s got to :p

  352. Rich in NJ says:

    The spotlight always finds A-Rod.

  353. Alex, please for the love of god take a pitch. Just one. Please.

  354. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Great AB by Granderson

  355. your mom says:

    Right down the pipe

  356. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Okay, okay. I have to say this.

    • your mom says:

      2007 Arod crushes that.

    • DT says:

Because it was in the strike zone?

      • Rocky Road Redemption says:

I’m sorry, I honestly am not trying to be a dick, but that’s a terrible argument.

When you have good hitters up behind you and all you need to do is get on base to continue the game, you should be completely content with a walk. Swining at the first pitch 1) Increases the chances that first pitch is an out 2) Leaves out the fact that umps sometimes makes calls and 3) Just because a pitch is in the strike zone doesn’t make it a good one to hit.

By your argument, hitters should never go up to a bat planning to take the first pitch.

        • Rocky Road Redemption says:

          Typo fixing time:

1)Increases the chances that first pitch is an out 2) Leaves out the fact that umps sometimes make bad calls and 3) Just because a pitch is in the strike zone doesn’t make it a good one to hit.

  357. Rocky Road Redemption says:

It’s sad how obvious it is that A-Rod is no longer A-Rod. He might still win it…but prime A-Rod would have crushed that last pitch.

  358. DZ says:

I’m typing this before Arod ends the game with a K.

  359. Rich in NJ says:

    They won the series. So…

  360. Bartolo's Colon says:

  361. Karl Krawfid says:

    A-Rod and Joe Girardi man.

  362. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Good, A-Rod. Throw your helmet. You missed two meatballs.

The spotlight just always seems to find poor A-Rod.

    • Hard to call a pitch coming in at 97-99 a meatball.

      • Rocky Road Redemption says:

Hearing Coney talking about it was sad…mid-belt and inside. A classic A-Rod HR pitch. And he pops it up.

[For the record, it's hard to call any ML pitch a meatball. To a major leaguer, given the location, it was a meatball.]

        • Brian S. says:

It wasn’t inside it was outside.

          • Rocky Road Redemption says:

Then Coney said the wrong word. In any case, it was agreed by Kay and Coney that he should have been able to hit it, or at least get a piece of it to stay alive.

            • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

He did get a piece of it, he popped it up. I’m not sure Arod can catch up with that kind of heat anymore, especially in a 2 strike count.

              • Rocky Road Redemption says:

That’s the sad thing. He can’t catch up to a pitch that he used to crush.

[BTW, can we please not quibble? You know that I meant get a piece of it to foul it away.]

                • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, I just don’t get the difference. Old ARod would have missed the pitch by more and made less contact?

                  • Rocky Road Redemption says:

What I was thinking was that he would have caught up to the pitch but knocked it into the dirt. That generally means you caught it but got above it. Or hooked it like Granderson-a near miss.

Also, you can foul a pitch even straight back hard. A-Rod’s pop-up was very soft.

          • Evan3457 says:

No, it was middle in, and moving in further.

  363. wow says:

oh but go right ahead and pitch Qualls when we’re down by two or three.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Shoulda pitched DRob … every game … regardless of score

      • wow says:

no, not really. but there’s a couple better arms in that bullpen for those spots. Spare me the sarcasm, it’s old.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Not really though. Eppley likely wasn’t available. Mitchell sucks.
Maybe Logan, but facing mostly righties and he’s struggled lately, I’m not sure he was a much better option.

The problem is the bullpen has too many OOGY’s and mediocre pitchers right now.

    • Karl Krawfid says:

It was a 1 run game going into the 8th.

  364. Widget says:

sad face. if only Qualls hadn’t pitched, if only the Yankees remembered how to run the bases, if only Nova didn’t suck today. Just one of those games.

    • Tom says:

The frustrating part is 2 of those 3 are (or should be) preventable.

    • Bartolo's Colon says:

true, shit happens, but there is just no excuse for qualls. the phillies bullpen blows and they gave him up. he should not be on this team under any circumstance

  365. flamingo says:

Oh well. At least we began a comeback.

  366. captain kiwi says:

my girlfriend started playing “build me up buttercup”. i kinda want to put bugs in her dinner.

  367. Ron says:

    5 more years

  368. Bartolo's Colon says:

arod had a good game, but he muffed it in his last ab.

  369. DT says:

Now lets just all blame Arod for the game. Lets forget about Nova, Qualls, Girardi’s pen management and Russell Martin. All Arod’s fault.

  370. Anthony says:

Man, I can’t tell you how I was hoping for a walk off grand slam. Complete the comeback, get the sweep, and A-Rod would have passed Gehrig.

  371. Brian S. says:

  372. Tom says:

The AB that will get lost in that 9th inning is the Jones AB against Downs.

He saw maybe 1 strike the whole AB but rather than waiting him out (like Jeter and Granderson did) he kept swinging for the 3 run HR on pitches low and/or low and outside.

  373. your mom says:

You win as a team, you lose as a team. Time to worry about the power-hitting Jays.

  374. Greg says:

Well my driving magic almost worked. Give the Yanks credit for not giving up.

  375. Kevin says:

Bottom line,Chad Qualls put us in too deep of a hole for us to crawl out of.
Girardi put up the white flag too soon and cost us the game.

  376. Rocky Road Redemption says:

I’m going to go against prevailing opinion here and say that I don’t think Grandyman had a great ab.

Sure, I was very happy with a walk. It wasn’t like he made an out, and so I can’t say it was a bad ab. But he missed two cookies. I think it was Coney who said, “How many mistakes are you going to get in one AB?”

He missed a couple of very hittable balls.

  377. stuart a says:

ANyone suprised with the pop out by arod? really…

he is avg player now. or as Cashaman said he is a above avg 3B…what a cut.. considering how bad the crew of 3B is, that is not exactly a statement of respect. the list of crappy 3b includes; the tampa crew, betemit, a 40 year old chipper jines, aramaiz ramirez, valbuena, callaspo, and the lsit goes on.

arod stinks bat him 6th and welcome to the new reality…..

nova was bad and qualls is bad. no problem with how Girardi used the pen, everygame is not a playoff game……

    • eephus_pitch says:

No opinion on that nice homerun he hit off Weaver?

    • Ppiddy says:

Agreed that every game is not a playoff game but every game should be played with a respect for fundamentals and a commitment to winning.

Veteran Yankees lacked fundamentals today and Girardi lacked commitment by throwing in the towel and putting in Qualls and Mitchell.

You move on and use it to improve. They have the best record in baseball but strive to be even better. Never take it for granted.

    • Oh..My..God.. Stuart is growing you guys. He’s using decent punctuation. He’s admitting that A-Rod’s merely average, not terrible. He’s also commenting on things not referring to A-Rod. He also sees that while Alex might not be what he used to be that there really isn’t a replacement for him. Yay, Stu!!!

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

  378. eephus_pitch says:

Nova gave up homers to Erick Aybar and Maicer Izturis. I’m comfortable awarding him the goat horns for this one.

  379. Christopher says:

I sat in Section 203 for that game, it was an oven, I baked, I’m dinner. Still, as long as the boys gave it run in the 9th, I mean a double away form winning after being five down, a 2-1 weekend against he Angels is something i can deal with.
