Game 92: The Left Coast
ByThe Yankees have completely manhandled the Athletics over the last three seasons, taking 25 of 31 games against Oakland including 13 of 15 in the Coliseum. The A’s are streaking though, having won ten of their last 12 overall. Then again, they won’t be facing the Twins, Mariners, and Red Sox anymore. Here’s the starting nine…
SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
3B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
C Chris Stewart
RHP Freddy Garcia
Tonight’s game starts a little after 10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy if you’re awake.
David Phelps Update: Joe Girardi said that he will essentially use Phelps in the Cory Wade role, not strictly long relief. I suppose that means the middle innings between the starter and David Robertson, which will be pretty awesome if he’s willing to let him work two or three innings at a time.

Eric Chavez is going to have a big game.
“Then again, they won’t be facing the Twins, Mariners, and Red Sox anymore.”
love that.
We see the Mariners next, then the Red Sox. No Twins till Sept. I believe.
I have to be up at some negative time like -42 o’clock. I don’t know why they can’t just start baseball games at 4 out there.
It’d be nice for us, but a game starting at 4 means the local fans don’t get home from work until like halfway through the game.
1.) Does anyone in Oakland know what time the games start?
2.) Does anyone in Oakland know that there’s still a baseball team there?
3.) Does anyone in Oakland have a job?
We really need to face the Orioles soon. Zach Britton probably still has nightmares about this game.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/boxscore?gameId=310730310
Gotta be honest, this series scares me a bit. Not a lot, but a bit.
shaving scares you. Grow a sack already.
Sack-shaving always scared me too.
Scares me too. Each of these pitchers does something that could give the team fits.
Cody Ross walkoff 3 run homer. Red Sox win
You change your shorts yet because I know you must have made a mess in them after your favorite team won. The gatorade bath was really the highlight of the game 7 celebration. Wait you mean it was a regular season game? Interesting, I thought Gatorade was only used for the really important occasions.
Is this necessary? Jesus.
fuck Cody Ross
I’m starting to think they get in that Wild Card game.
all but 3 teams in the AL have a shot at the two wildcards. Their chance isn’t any better than any of the others. Angels and Tigers are the two wild cards teams anyways.
It’s ok, the White Sox have a better record than the Red Sox anyway.
If I got to choose a coast I got to choose the East
I live out there, so don’t go there
But that don’t mean a nigga can’t rest in the West
See some nice breasts in the West
Smoke some nice sess in the West, y’all niggaz is a mess
Thinkin I’m goin’ stop, givin L.A. props
All I got is beef with those that violate me
I shall annihilate thee
Case closed, suitcase filled with clothes
Linens and things, I begin things
People start to flash, 818′s, 213′s
313′s, B.I.G.
Vasghersian delayed reaction on the home run, haha
dog night?????
You can’t get people there voluntarily, so you have to have the few people who will go force their dogs to go too so things look more crowded.
Cody Ross and Andruw Jones love Fenway.
…so does Jason Bay
SO does Mike Lowell.
Singleton and Cone for 7 straight games. did I die and go to heaven?
No, just the West Coast
Kay doesn’t go there, so it’s always Singleton. Cone is a nice addition though.
No Kay?? Bonus !!
Like I mentioned above, Kay never does the West Coast.
This is large.
He doesn’t cross the Mighty Mississipp.
Nicely done.
Now I really hope we win tonight. We can make the O’s, Rays, and Red Sox wins go to waste.
yes because god forbid the yankees 10 game lead go to waste. Oh the horror!!!!!!!!!
Red Sox have many Hall of Famers because home runs
Reminds me when I was at the Iron Pigs game earlier this month. Saw a guy with a shirt naming all of the Phillies HOF players. Wished I could have stopped and studied it to see how many guys were only there for a year or two. Which is similar to the Red Sox.
You mean this one? http://www.fansedge.com/Philad.....45_PD.html
LOL! They count Ryne Sandberg!!! He had a TOTAL of 6 PA’s for the Phillies!!!!!
11 of the 34 played for the Phillies only 1 year! That’s just sad.
DISCLAIMER: I am RAB commenting a bit drunk tonight. It was a coworkers birthday today and we went out for a few (read: a lot of) drinks after work. But anyway, GO YANKEES!
behave or we’re holding you accountable for everything….
that’s not a disclaimer, it’s a cliche.
Is it? I’m just trying to warn the trolls
The trolls? Didn’t you try and fail to troll OTM like last night?
Did you drink and dial?
As soon as they get Phelps stretched out to full starter length they break him back down to a 1, maybe 2, inning reliever again. Sometimes I wonder if this franchise knows which way is up when it comes to handling young pitchers. They seem to get in their own way so often with no real plan for things.
sometimes you wonder?
Just a ridiculous decision. Stop jerking the kids around.
You ain’t bad, you ain’t nothin!
You hear me?! You ain’t BAD, you ain’t nothin!!!!!
Addison Reed is a total bitch, so there is some silver lining to the walk-off.
Think the Blue Jays even compete with them this weekend?
Anyone else getting a crazy lightning storm? It seriously looks like a strobe light outside of my window.
My house in Maryland is rumbling.
Thunder is far off in NE DC, but the lightning is ridiculous.
terrible call, definitely lost it on the transfer
that was crazy
how is that not a hit for cano?
He caught the ball and lost it on the transfer.
but he technically didn’t, jeter was called out and arod advanced
then cano wouldnt have been at first base
It’s a fielder’s choice force out.
thats it
i guess an error?
I;m worried now. Those things have been going our way recently.
lol
They were really squaring up the ball that inning. That bodes well for the future of this game on offense…
25 pitches or so as well
That was worth it just to say we saw it.
weeks is fast
Dammit Jeter…
Really? You blame him for that?
Most shortstops turn that into an out.
Not with Weeks’s speed.
They get to the ball a lot faster than Jeter does, so yes.
Maybe if they were positioned closer to 2B
So Jeter was retired because of a heads-up backup play on a wayward throw in Oakland. Are we even now?
Just saw that the Cubs signed former Yankee illegal signee Juan Carlos Paniagua.
That sucked.
that dudes awesome, he golfed it
I knew this would be trouble
Remember, the offense ALWAYS scores 3 runs
real shock there. you are such a pussy.
1. Thank you for showing class
2. I seriously felt a bit nervous about this series. The A’s have some offense now to go with good pitching.
You worry about everything. You’re going to die before your 30s.
Once again, the class comes out. Thank you.
Wow, dude. You really need to back the fuck off. This is pretty uncalled for and, from the looks of it, you’ve been doing it all game thread with Greg.
I blame Jeter.
lol
get phelps up.
Get Phelps up!
These fucking west coast games suck. I am exhausted and trying to stay awake.
Jeez, 2 runs and you have the pitchforks out? Its still the first inning. I’d suggest knocking it off until later.
these are the jokes, adam.
Deport Cespedes!
probably worth it to stay away from cespedes, he is magma hot right now
Can’t stay up for this. Want to but can’t. Already seems like a crazy game that will suck me in and throw me up around midnight.
“The A’s are the Yankees of the West Coast!”
(Gulp)
NOBODY IS THE YANKEES BUT THE YANKEES.
And anyone who even thinks about a comparison, needs to get off the drugs.
Come on. You gotta show the Yankee fan with a red hat and a nerd camera?
YES showed guys in flip flops the other night. I wanted them banished forever and ever.
Haha
infield single for ibanez, alert the authorities!
“An infield single for Raul Ibañez”
…file that one under “Things you will hear once in a decade”
I was definitely expecting that to deflect off Griffin’s glove and turn into an RBI triple for Stewart
I told you, they have some offense.
You know who else has offense? The Yankees.
I just turned the game on – is it dog night?
I don’t get why Stewart is starting tonight. Yesterday was a day game, rain-shortened. Martin could daily start tonight even if it is on West Coast.
Is this being eased into a 50-50 platoon? Or 60-40?
Strange, wonder if it comes up in post-game
*daily = easily
I wonder if there might be a deal. Him and Dan Brewer for somebody. I doubt it, but you never know.
“Him and Freddy have been together and I’ve liked what they’ve done. Long flight yesterday. It was hot, hot day yesterday. Just keep both catchers fresh. They’re both doing a great job.”
http://yankees.lhblogs.com/201.....es+Blog%29
Hmm. Ok. I suppose I can buy it.
I bet Russ doesn’t buy it, but I guess we can.
I swear if Stewart starts catching 2/5 games…
Stewart has caught all of Garcia’s starts since Freddy returned to the rotation.
I think that may be what’s happening.
I really, really hope not.
You notice that when they give you more than one “reason” (I.e. how Stewart is with Freddy, hot day, keep both fresh) that it’s actually an excuse.
If there is one reason, there’s on reason. Girardi is clearly making an excuse.
Norris hits bombs. Watch outout.
I hate the Oakland Colliseum.
I also agree with Greg that this kid and his 60 MPH junk has a chance to give the team fits all night……that is until they remember he’s a rookie and skullfuck him at about the 6th innings.
Keep the team in the game long enough, sweaty one. That is all we ask.
Meredith looking mighty nice tonight.
I feel bad for the folks who have to clean up the stands after tonight’s game.
My sound is off. Why were they walking dogs on the warning track?
Miss Oakland contest?
Whammy!
Hey now. Much love for the Bay Area. I just hate this ugly-ass stadium.
I blame Freddy.
You know, I’m starting to think that having Dog Night the day after Skippy Peanut Butter Night was a bad idea.
Dogs’ day over there.
That’s a horse!
If they gave out an award for Ugliest Swing, Chris Stewart would take it in a walk. There are pitchers who take better hacks than he does.
2-0 down. Not bad game by Garcia so far.
And the 2 run homer was not a bad pitch. Cespedes golfed it.
Shit.. what a killer golf swing.
well, i’m definitely not staying up for this weak contact crap… Here’s to hoping they get to the bullpen quickly and FreddyPhelps keeps us in the game. Good night everyone!
This situation has trouble written all over it
whine whine whine.
Get. An. Outfielder.
1st. place.
De. Nard. Span.
Three Dog Night
Oh man. I pray there is at least one bulldog named Jeremiah there tonight.
Or a Bullfrog, lol
I took some creative license.
Well worth it. Well done.
Great song, by the way!
Yo-yo-yoenis Ces-pedda-speda-speddes!!
I don’t know if anyone uses GameChannel on Yahoo, but Cespedes’ picture is so small and off center that it looks like he’s a child.
if he swings at that, why the hell is freddy throwing in the zone?
Well this might be Freddy’s last start.
This might be a pivotal inning for him.
Maybe. Maybe not. Serviceable until tonight.
RAB Meme Seth Smith up with the bases loaded…
Double play, Freddy. Come on.
Phelps, please.
not so sweaty freddy
That’s right Freddy, it’s on you.
it’s too cold for Freddy to get sweaty and no sweat means no pitching mojo
65 in California? wow I am so jealous.
The issue is when it stays 65 about all year long. I love Bay Area weather…..when I’m on vacation there.
San Francisco… same?
SF is one Bay Bridge ride away from Oakland.
Is Phelps up yet?
Yes
Nah. He asleep still. Call back later.
I was going to work in a BTTF/slept in reference, but I can’t really figure out a good way to do it.
i guess it’s good the bullpen rested yesterday
See the problem is that now all the other AL East teams will gain ground. Not a lot of ground, but enough to keep their hopes up. Especially with Cody Ross walking off against the White Sox.
What inning is it?
A’s have the best ERA in the American League. There is reason to be not optimistic.
No one is saying we will or won’t come back, but if they lose, why be so disappointed just because the other division teams won today. It’s not like the lead was going to be 10 games or more throughout the whole year.
I think their pitchers are tricky little bitches. Yes. The Yankees are going to lose ballgames between here and October. They may even lose a series to a team like this. Hell, their asses might even get swept before season’s end. That’s why they decided 162 games makes for a season and not, say, 16, like in the NFL.
10 blown saves may give us some hope.
They play in a football field and get to face the mariners 18 times. They always have a low ERA. My god man, get your shit together.
Yanks have scored 3+ runs in 42 straight games. There is reason to be optimistic.
I can’t imagine a ten game lead would hold up over the rest of the season, though. Other teams are going to gain ground eventually.
By 1 game dude. It’s not the end of things. We have the biggest division lead in baseball.
You’re expecting a double-digit lead all season long, Greg? It’s never easy.
The ’86 Mets had their division virtually locked up by now.
Now I;m not saying that this team is the ’86 Mets, but it iss possible to lock up a division in July.
The ’86 Mets were close to 30 years ago. It’s not supposed to be that easy every year. Sorry.
You’ll be fine. Just keep a full tank of gas.
Unfortunately that option has gone out the window with these late games. Damn west coast
Maybe Sunday.
Drink up, then.
holy shit are you for real? IF the Yankees lose the orioles are out by 9 in the loss column, meanwhile Tampa and your superteam in Boston will still be out by double digits.
You’re already conceding this game?
Even the dogs think Freddy is pitching ugly.
I take it back… what a BAD game by Garcia.
You know I love the ladies
Love to have my fun
I’m a high life flyer and a rainbow rider
A straight shootin’ son-of-a-gun
I said a straight shootin’ son-of-a-gun…
Piniero, Halama, Moyer, Meche for trivia?
Moyer and Piniero I like.
I think Halama may have been long gone by then. Meche looks good.
How about Franklin?
Ryan Franklin was correct.
I’m worried a bunch of streaks are going to come to an end tonight
I felt that the run streak would end in this series, given the park and the pitching staff.
How are people not happy? Phelps is available for an inning tonight! That’s the most important thing.
I can’t wait until 10 days from now, after Freddy gets smacked around by Oakland and Seattle, when the Yankees send Phelps back down (for Mitchell) to get stretched back out as a starter…
Maybe. Maybe not. None of it is the end of the world.
He’s already stretched out. It doesn’t disappear that quickly. Worst case, he might only be available for 5 innings his first start.
….which would constitute the longest start of his MLB career, then.
Which is also clearly his fault. It certainly has nothing to do with them not having any semblance of a plan or being able to stick to one development path…
You’re getting way too worked up over this for someone who is usually a pretty rational commenter.
The back-and-forth with Phelps is frustrating, but it’s not killing either the player or team.
No, it’s not killing the team, but it is potentially costing them games.
As for not killing the player, it’s way too early to say that for sure. That’s something that will take time to tell. Of course he won’t complain and he’ll do anything he can to be in the bigs, but this is clearly not the best choice for either the individual or the team. They’re just too in love with veterans some (most?) of the time.
You can’t fault a team in the driver’s seat for going with the veteran.
Not every young pitcher who gets their role shifted around and rides the shuttle winds up being Joba Chamberlain.
Of course it doesn’t, but that’ll be their excuse to get Garcia a few more starts anyway.
Does it matter then? If they are going to keep Freddy in the rotation no matter what, why not see if Phelps can help out in the bullpen? I agree the back and forth has been a bit ridiculous, but they could definitely use a solid middle innings guy in the pen. Maybe Phelps can do that.
I don’t like it, but if you’re going to keep Freddy in there, then sure it’s best to have Phelps in the majors trying to help in the bullpen. That’s not even the big issue though. It’s the way they can’t even decide what they want to do. They make one decision, then suddenly 10-15 days later, change their minds again with no semblance of long-term development plan for the individual or roster plan for the team.
Wade filled the role, he turned into a pumpkin (hopefully only temporarily)
Qualls got the next shot – enough said.
Now it’s Phelp’s shot.
The team’s roster needs have changed over the past month or so, so they’ve adjusted their plans accordingly. They’re just putting their current roster needs ahead of an individual players development.
Dammit. The only thing that matters is Robbie’s hitting streak, not a Freddy Garcia start.
Prioritize, people.
weak fielding tonight
Wow, A’s making us look bad.
The 3-run thing isn’t looking good tonight.
Damn West Coast flights.
if nothing else this game will over by about 1230
Glad to see the team is putting together such good at bats. It will be funny if a rookie with mediocre stuff on Oakland is the guy that breaks the Yankees 3+ run streak, just because it will build on this false (or maybe not so false?) narrative that the Yankees can’t handle rookies/young pitchers they havent seen
This looks alot like what Jose Quintana was doing to the Red Sox tonight. Few strikeouts, no walks, pitching to contact.
Except he’s doing it in a bigger park.
So I guess we wait until they bring Balfour in.
it’s like everything in baseball for you revolves around the red sox. fucking red sox troll.
bigger lead on the scoreboard, which he’s pitching to.
Baseball today sucks.
Meh. Things won’t go your way every night.
We can blame Jeter together, Brian.
I just learned that you can’t predict baseball.
Write that down, everybody.
wait, im confused. are the a’s good? or does freddy suck?
Yes.
Bit of both. A’s have a much better offense then when we played them last. But Freddy is shaky.
The guy’s throwing a combination of 90 and 60 MPH. If they can get him to start making some mistakes, great. Just reading the description of this guy in the series thread made me a bit worried, though. I’ll admit it.
No, I am not afraid of shaving.
If Freddy goes 6 IP and gives up four runs, he suddenly just gave you a pretty typical back-end start.
they should only pitch sweaty freddy when its hot and humid. No sweat. no bueno
It’d be nice if the offense didn’t go for the triple 7 here.
Dammit, Curtis.
Griffin held the Rangers scoreless through 6 innings on June 29th.
So this guy can hold down top offenses.
Come on guys. If it’s high, let it fly. If it’s low, let it go. His curve may as well be a knuckler, treat it as such. Stop swinging at crap.
are there any numbers for infield hits allowed? seems way too many against the yanks
Alright one swing both streaks
yea cano, but i hate hits with risp that dont plate runs
Greg?
Robbie!
Hooray. Now I can go to bed.
Not great baserunnning by Jeter there. That was never very close to being caught. He could’ve taken off right away. Still may not have been able to go on Cepedes’ arm, but still…
jeter should have walked home backwards against crisp there
There’s one.
SWISH. Big hit
Well we’re one run away from continuing the streak.
Not quite the sixth-inning skullfucking (yet) I predicted earlier, but the kid’s finally making mistakes.
c-dick please
That hook is almost unhittable. He located well too, if he took.
more aboiut the fielding
It’s funny. Everyone tries to say Ibanez can’t hit a fastball. Yet there, he couldn’t hit anything under 80.
Don’t know why, just think that’s ironic.
Ibanez can only hit fastballs down the middle. That’s like his only skill.
Does this guy have a Blyleven-like curve or something? I’m listening to Ma and Pa, and they can’t stop raving about it. But they’re idiots. And Suzyn loves the way he’s been hitting spawts all night.
It’s almost slow enough to resemble your screen name. Yeah, it’s pretty good.
Cone: “…give him a chance to get off the hook, er finish it.”
Not sure if he realizes sometimes…
Enjoy the rest of the game, everyone.
It looks like Mo found himself a new hobby
Mo’s acting skills in that Acura commercial were awesome. I totally believe he drives that car.
Can’t they all just get along?
http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/b.....iants-fans
Phelps should pitch the rest of the game whether it’s 2.1 or 3.1.
great, russell sucks on the west coast too
He’s starting to feel dangerous.
Laz must’ve let him hold the ball yesterday
thanks god yankee stadium never has dog night
It seems like an absolute pain in the ass to sit with a dog in a stadium for 3 plus hours…although that bulldog with the tutu is pretty cool…this game is boring.
“Do you know what Mark Teixeira and I have in common?”
BLAM
Phelps is getting that inside corner
Damn. That was mildly filthy, Phelps.
what is the deal with arod’s jersey in that bullying commercial?
stuart a finally got to him.
wtf is going on in Oakland
Kenny: “Some kind of exercise class.”
I near shat myself laughing.
awful AB… nothing but straight fastballs and he cant catch up to any of them
Even if he could catch up to one, the last was at shoulder height. Good luck doing anything with that.
fuck.
You gotta be kidding me Alex…waste of an at bat
they are really putting up a fight and making those last outs count
Well, with Cook closing, this game is virtually over.
Gotta win tomorrow to keep the others from advancing.
Was that the third 7 pitch inning of the game?
Yup, along with the 4th and 5th.
some nasty 2 seamers from Phelps
I want the stupid run
Phelps is so much better than Freddy, it’s not even funny.
Are you saying that we would have won if we started Phelps instead of Garcia?
Because you know what that is.
we obviously started the wrong guy
FALLACY
How is that “fallacy”?
Because you don’t know if he pitches that way if he starts.
You do, however, know how Freddy pitched.
So.
Phelps could be worse.
It’s an OPINION on who should have started… it’s not a statement of what would have happened.
It’s not a statement of “the Yankees would have won” or “he would have shut out the A’s”
If you are going to keep spouting fallacy or bordeline fallacy at any chance you get, you really should learn what it means. You are reading into comments so you can generate a contrarian response.
Boy, you’re just in love with thinking you know all this philosophy, aren’t you? There’s no fallacy there. He didn’t say if Phelps had started they would’ve won. For your adored fallacy, there needs to be an if… then… phrase in there.
He’s very close to it.
Phelps looked very sharp.
So at least there’s that.
Wow. Never seen him pitch THIS good
just gotta let Cook get himself in trouble.. he’ll walk guys
phelps needs to start. his movement and location are looking on point
it would be cooler if this was brian fuentes
5 feet from extending the streak
come one swishy. a garbage time homer would be nice.
well, thank you.
and the streak lives!
YEAH!!!!
STREAK SURVIVES!!!!
STREAK!!!!!!!!!!!
That extends the streak
there’s the streak lol… now let’s win
At least Phelps was available for those critical middle relief innings. Good thing they didn’t waste him by starting a game.
You’re bordering a fallacy
Not at all, thanks for trying though.
He’s not wrong though. Freddy doesn’t belong in a major league rotation for a team that wants to win the WS.
He won’t be in the playoff rotation. It’s extremely unlikely Freddy temporarily being in the rotation has any effect at all on the Yankees WS chances.
The streak lives to see another day.
The streak livvvvvves
How can it be a line-drive bullet if it’s also high, far, and gone?
One or the other, Pops.
Nick’s a hot diggity dog.
nice ibanez
fucking dumbass, that wasn`t even close
ugh anyone else
oh great the fate of the game in russells hands
At least both streaks live on.
That was like a thousand dog night.
way to sleepwalk through a game, great effort tonight
yeah, they clearly weren’t trying
The A’s scored 5 runs in the three games we beat them in last time.
They scored 4 tonight. They’re not the same team.
They scored 4 runs against our worst starter. That is not exactly proof of crushing the ball.
Or maybe Garcia’s just not a very good pitcher.
Or maybe, more likely, a combination of both.
Or maybe it’s just a fallacy
/am I doing it right?
As meaningless as the streak may be, I was actually happier about the prospect of continuing on to the record that I was about a potential Yankees win.
I may need to seek medical attention.
I feel you, bro.
http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....nt-4573647
Can’t win every game. On to tomorrow!
Ibanez and Russ need to go fuck themselves with a cactus.
When is Martin going to get paralyzed so we can all be happy?
Happy that Stewart is starting? Really?
Scoring four runs against our number five starter is not exactly showing power there.
If only Addison Reed had done his job earlier in the night, then I would feel okay about this. I want Red Sox fans to have no hope.
Left Coast swing, not a well rested team, lose a 1- run game. So be it. I´ll be greatly surprised if Freddy gets the start 5 days from now.
I’ll be greatly surprised if he doesn’t. Phelps only threw 27 pitches tonight, so he’ll clearly need to be sent down to be stretched back out again before he’s ready to start…
seriously ? I could be wrong but I don´t think Phelps is going anywhere anytime soon.
I’m being sarcastic about him needing to be sent down to be stretched out already, though that wouldn’t surprise me either right now with how they’re operating.
But, I’m totally serious about Garcia starting. I’d be absolutely shocked if he wasn’t on the mound in Seattle next time through.
Honestly, if we had won it would have been a bonus after that third run was scored in the ninth. Keep the streak alive!
That’s true
