Game 108: Can they make it seven straight?

By

(AP Photo/Patrick Semansky)

I’m going to set you up for disappointment here, but did you know the Yankees have scored a first inning run off Justin Verlander each of the last six times and in seven of the last eight times they’ve faced him, playoffs included? That seems kinda crazy and frankly I would be stunned if they made it seven straight and eight of nine tonight. Just seems unsustainable against a pitcher of that caliber, but I’m welcome to being surprised. Here’s the starting nine…

CF Curtis Granderson
SS Derek Jeter
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
3B Eric Chavez
DH Ichiro Suzuki
Russell Martin

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s episode of “All the Extra-Base Hits” starring Ivan Nova game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

  1. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Ichiro as DH … SMFH

  2. vin says:

I know they’re facing another righty, but I’m surprised that McGehee has only gotten in the 1 game so far.

  3. Why isn’t Giradi going:
    Ichiro
    Jeter
    Cano
    Tex
    Granderson
    Swish
    Ibanez/Jones
    Chavez/Nix
    Martin

  4. Kevin G. says:

If they don’t score in the first inning I’m gonna blame you for jinxing it Axisa.

  5. captain kiwi says:

haha. i’m heading off to family dinner, so i’ll miss most of this episode. let’s go yanks!

  6. The Troll says:

Way to go, Mike. You’ve jinxed an already inconsistent offense . . . Now they won’t score until the ninth inning ! ! ! ! ! LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!

  7. Tom says:

Is Rick Sutcliffe the worst color commentator going today?

He is the ultimate prisoner of the moment, and he will probably say “one of the best…” about 50 times tonight

  8. Will The Thrill says:

I’m not looking forward to this series at all. The lineup is a bit short without A-Rod, the bottom of our lineup hasn’t been betting it done, and of course we still suck with RISP.

  9. RetroRob says:

    Nolan Ryan disagrees.

  10. didn’t catch the game last night, did ichiro continue the one hit per game streak?

  11. The Troll says:

    Mike Axisa, Master Jinxer.

  12. Will The Thrill says:

And Grandy Ks on a breaking ball. What else is new? It’s become so easy to put him away this year. Just get two strikes on him and throw an offspeed pitch down. Also Jeter take a freaking pitch for once.

    • jjyank says:

I wouldn’t go that far. His hitting is 25% better than league average, so it can’t be that easy to face him.

      • Get Phelps Up says:

It’s also not east to face a guy who has the 2nd most homers in MLB.

      • Will The Thrill says:

All I’m saying is that his HRs don’t compensate for his Ks. I’d rather have a player who is going to hit .300 make contact (strikeout maybe 80-90 times) and hit just 15-20HRS.

  13. Brian S. says:

    Well that half inning sucked.

  14. The Troll says:

Me thinks this game could get very ugly very fast. Detroit’s offense (IMO) is just too good.

  15. Mike N says:

I am so glad that I have already gotten to see so many Yankees games on teevee out of market! And now this one is on ESPN, and tomorrow is on MLB Network! And I am cooking a baked rigatoni, sausage, ricotta, and mozzarella casserole for dinner! And drinking wine!

    Now the Yanks better win!

  16. Brian S. says:

Those were both strikes to AJax…

  17. Mike N says:

Nice play, Chavez! How fortunate is it to have him while A-Rod is out!?

  18. Mike N says:

    Good start, Ivan!

  19. Brian S. says:

Imagine Miggy’s numbers in an offensive ballpark. I wonder if Hank didn’t intervene and Cashman pursued Cabrera instead of Rodriguez which prospects we would have traded for him.

    • Will The Thrill says:

Yeah I remember Miami wanted Hughes and Chamberlain for Cabrera but alas the Yankees are prospect huggers like the rest of us.

  20. jjyank says:

Nice start, Nova. I really want to call you SuperNova again, so let’s keep that up.

  21. Pat D says:

Over the last week, watching Yankees games has seemed like a nuisance. It’s taking time away from playing with my new phone.

Jeez, after 6 1/2 years of doing cell phone tech support and swearing I wouldn’t become one of those people, I’ve become one of those people.

  22. Brian S. says:

    Felix or Price for CY

  23. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Tex is just never going to figure out the changeup, is he?

  24. Will The Thrill says:

Verlander is such a diva. He seems like a douche who acts fake tough.

  25. CUYanks says:

Innings is a pretty imprecise way of measuring workload, and pitches seems immediately better, but I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the 8 or so warm up pitches each new inning a pitcher takes the mound.

  26. Get Phelps Up says:

    Still a really nice AB.

  27. Pat D says:

Gonna be hard to win if he’s getting those calls.

  28. WOW Nova better get that call. That was way off the plate.

  29. Brian S. says:

That’s outside. It’s game 3 of the ALDS all over again.

  30. Will The Thrill says:

    WAYYYYYY OUTSIDE!

  31. captain kiwi says:

sticking around for a bit, and saw those pitches to raul and swish – they’re really gonna give verlander those pitches? this game is gonna be a pain in the ass.

  32. Tom says:

Good grief the umpire is calling the zone based on reputation.

Going to be a long night when he’s giving Verlander that crap on the outside (both the strike 2 to Ibanez and the strike 1 to Swisher)

    • Tom says:

Oops – meant strike 3 to Ibanez.

Even the Red Sox homer doing the play by play on ESPN was calling it generous

  33. Will The Thrill says:

This series will suck hard. I’m just hoping the Orioles, Rays and Red Sox don’t win too many games.

  34. CUYanks says:

Aaron Cook just never ceases to amaze me with his K%. I wouldn’t want to be 1 of those 4 guys he struck out this year.

  35. Brian S. says:

    Nova blows

  36. Pat D says:

What a cheap home run that was. Barely cleared the fence.

    Waiting for it…

  37. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

There’s more of that bad luck Ivan’s been having lately…

  38. Cuso says:

Little Cecil hit that homer because of the called strike 3 to Ibanez.

  39. Will The Thrill says:

So this is what a real middle of the order looks like…

  40. Brian S. says:

His changeup is fucking terrible. He’s given up like a thousand home runs off of it this year and he only throws it like 5% of the time.

  41. Chip says:

Wow, maybe Nova should just stop throwing the changeup

  42. Mike N says:

C’mon, Nova. Now keep your cool.

  43. Will The Thrill says:

    RIP Ivan Nova 2010-2012

  44. Chip says:

There we go, throw the lefties the curve instead of the change Ivan

  45. DERP says:

I want to make a joke about Detroit’s unemployment, but I am afraid it is going to be lousy.

  46. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Balkin’ Bob Doodyhead.

  47. DERP says:

    Nice recovery.

  48. captain kiwi says:

those were awkward k’s… but whatever!

  49. Did anybody else watch the Curiosity Rover landing last night? Pretty cool stuff (especially if you’re a space geek like me.)

  50. Pat D says:

Geez, I feel like I can predict which commercials I’m going to see every YES commercial break.

I guess this is why I haven’t been watching every single inning anymore. All these commercials annoy the shit out of me.

  51. DERP says:

The Seattle Mariners are a bunch of useless pieces of shit.

  52. Brian S. says:

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but look at that changeup he throws 4% of the time.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/stats.....#pitchtype

    -3.49 wCH/C

  53. Cuso says:

    Unfortunately…..one run….King Felix….tough to score…..umm

    Nevermind

  54. Kevin G. says:

    Crisis averted: no-hitter over.

  55. Will The Thrill says:

Whew. At least we won’t get perfect gamed/no hit.

  56. Mike N says:

    Chavez for POTG!

  57. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

There’s one of those Ichiro productive outs Greg keeps telling us about.

  58. Brian S. says:

All of Ichiro’s line drives are soft floaters. That’s why his BABIP sucks.

  59. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Is this umpire just going to give Verlander every strike call? That would really suck.

  60. Will The Thrill says:

Chances someone drives Chavez in : 2%

  61. mt says:

Ichiro is pathetic in RISP situations – also seems very impatient.

  62. Mike N says:

    Martin for POTG!

    • jjyank says:

Meh, Chavez was just rounding third when the LF was releasing his throw. A good throw has him out by a mile.

  63. mt says:

This is where Grandy gets a scoring fly ball as opposed to Jeter hitting into a DP, right?

  64. Brian S. says:

Make these bitches regret trading you Curtis.

  65. Mike Axisa says:

If Jeter was leading off, this would have been an instaGIDP.

  66. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Hey, Axisa. How’s this season of Breaking Bad so far? (I’m catching up on the DVR, just finished the second episode).

  67. Christ. This strikezone is gigantic.

  68. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    CURTIS!

  69. Will The Thrill says:

    Grandy with the Ks.

    :-(

  70. teddy says:

yanks are the only team that can’t score a runner from 2nd base on a single and as usual granderson never does his job

  71. DERP says:

Where is Alex to hit one off the wall?

  72. Tom says:

Another bullshit call to Granderson that was the difference between a 2-0 and 1-1 count (though not as bad as a couple of the other ones).

This umpire is having too much of an impact on the game.

  73. Mike N says:

Why have I never heard of Nap Lajoie before?

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Probably because he would have been 138 years old if he was still alive.

    • TomH says:

He’s one of those true greats from that era who, for reasons I can’t fathom, never survived his time in the way that people like Cobb, Wagner, Speaker, and others succeeded in doing. This despite something like .338 avg and all those base hits over a pretty long career. I learned about him from “Superstar Baseball,” a board game I play with my grandsons.

  74. Will The Thrill says:

That’s what happens when you have a walking strikeout and groundball hitter at the top of your order. #RISPFAIL

    • DERP says:

I’m sure facing the best pitcher in baseball had nothing to do with it.

      • The Troll says:

So how do you account for Chavez and Martin? He is right . . . Those two actions are the two natural tendencies for Granderson and Jeter respectively. It IS hard to score with RISP when you have a player that nearly leads the Majors in Ks and Captain Groundout in immediate succession.

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

Curtis HAS to do better in spots like that. I know “strikeouts are just the same as other outs,” but in this case other kinds of outs might very well have scored a run.

    • DERP says:

By the way, this isn’t twitter.

  75. The Troll says:

Way to put some muscle into it Jeter!

  76. CUYanks says:

I’m not scared of the Rays, but it should be noted that Evan Longoria is getting activated tomorrow.

  77. Arya says:

As soon as Rob Thomson held that runner at 3rd I knew the Yanks would not score. Strike out prone lead off hitter vs strikeout pitcher, weak infield grounder by Jeter was the script and that’s exactly what happened.

  78. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    Leadoff doubles are great.
Leadoff doubles that never score are not as great.
I’m already pulling my hair out. Or I would if I wasn’t bald.

  79. Mike N says:

It seemed like Verlander was pitching around Jeter. I wonder if he could have just taken the 3-1 pitch?

  80. Ichy balls says:

    Robbie thompson needs to go
How many runs are we going to waste it bullshit every other team scores on singles to lf and cf.

    • Brian S. says:

It’s not Thompson’s fault our entire team is slow as fuck. Chavez would have been thrown out.

      • CUYanks says:

Yeah, exactly. Every time they don’t send the runner from 3rd (very often this season) I get frustrated, but when I see the replay it’s almost always a slow runner getting a terrible jump from 2nd. Can’t really blame Thompson, though I feel like maybe the team as a whole aren’t getting great secondary leads from second.

      • Ichy balls says:

That one game we had two thrown out at home since then its base to base bullshit it 90 ft 180 from second with a good lead its 170 or less thats not hard to score on and you see clubs with slow guys like boston and chicago do it all time its playing safe.

    • jjyank says:

Really? I thought Chavez would have been out by a mile if he went for it.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Chavez would have been out by a mile.
Thompson needs to go because he doesn’t send runners into certain outs?

    • Mike N says:

That play wouldn’t have even been close if he sent Chavez. The catcher could have met him halfway to third with the ball.

  81. Brian S. says:

Verlander has five balls called strikes so far. Nova has two strikes called balls and two balls called strikes so he is even.

  82. Pat D says:

I think that Girardi is destined to be tossed tonight.

Unless Randazzo just doesn’t take it personally, which would be surprising.

    • Mike N says:

If he didn’t throw him out between innings based on the discussion they showed, then Girardi’s gonna have to chest bump him or kick dirt on him or something to get tossed. Actually, I would love to see Girardi kick dirt! Never gonna happen, of course.

  83. Arya says:

I think even balkin Bob Davidson could call a better game than this. I guess he’ll be calling a game this series, too, so it’s unlikely to get any better.

  84. The Troll says:

By the way guys . . . I thought I should share this with y’all . . . I heard through the grapevine that Greg double dips and never tips the pizza delivery guy. Shameful.

  85. I usually hate the bunt…but in retrospect would’ve been ok with Suzuki bunting. Best case scenario he beats it out, runners on first and second. Worst case scenario straight to the pitcher, no advance and the innings plays out exactly as it did.

  86. Will The Thrill says:

Is it too late to trade Teixeira back to the Angels for Trout and sign Fielder?

    *not serious

  87. Cuso says:

Sutcliffe and Hershiser are always “tickled” when the Yankees’ struggle.

  88. DERP says:

Cano has great skills but NO PLATE DISCIPLINE

  89. Kramerica Industries says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Bob Davidson one of the umpires the last time these two met, and caused a shitfest from Girardi?

    Or was that Joe West?

  90. Mike Axisa says:

    What a stupid park.

  91. Ichy balls says:

    One out runner not moved

  92. Cuso says:

    We’re not in YS3 Mark, c’mon.

  93. Will The Thrill says:

Fucking huge ballpark. This is why the Yankees suck when they play here.

  94. Mike N says:

Loud out. Seemed like Teix knew he didn’t get it all when he hit it, though.

  95. Ichy balls says:

Two down runner still at first

  96. Ichy balls says:

    Finally two batters too late

  97. Brian S. says:

Swisher has been so fucking bad lately.

  98. Ichy balls says:

    Nice at bat swish

  99. JonS says:

Dafuq did Cano just do? Did he actually steal a base? lol

    5-tool!!

  100. Cuso says:

In other news, the Mega-Powers collide

  101. Nova’s pitched well so far, minus one pitch.

  102. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    Nice 0-2 pitch.

  103. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    More bad luck for Ivan.

  104. DERP says:

    Kill me.

  105. Tom says:

    Nice 0-2 pitch Ivan….

  106. Kramerica Industries says:

That’s the third time in four games this year where Cabrera hit one out to dead center there.

    Jesus.

  107. Brian S. says:

Send him to fuckin AAA already. He’s had one good month.

  108. Will The Thrill says:

Has him 0-2, throws him a strike. Y?

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

I think it’s clear by now that Nova doesn’t always get the ball where he wants to. He wasn’t trying to hang an 0-2 pitch right over the middle of the plate.

  109. JonS says:

Did Nova and Phil switch places?

  110. DERP says:

The Indians must really want someone in next year’s draft.

  111. jjyank says:

Real nice turn by Robbie there!

  112. CUYanks says:

Let’s get the pitch count up this inning!

  113. DERP says:

    This ump can GTH

  114. Will The Thrill says:

Nova needs to go back to doing what he did in 2011. I feel like he’s tinkering with too many different pitches. Pitches that are probably his 3rd and 4th best. Last year he was fastball/curveball and maybe a little slider every now and then. This year he’s throwing too many changeups and in that process is losing command on his fastball. Just my opinion.

  115. Lets see if we learned anything from last time…

  116. G says:

It all started with mentioning the first inning run streak.

    Blame Axisa and/or Canada.

  117. DERP says:

Is there anyone who doesn’t love Chavez?

  118. Mike N says:

    CHAVEZ FOR POTG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, now I say bunt him over and sac him in! Or hit a homer!

  119. Mike Axisa says:

    Bunt towards Miggy, Ich.

  120. RetroRob says:

The tatoo artist probably wrote a curse, althougj Kuroda or Ichiro probably would have notified him!

  121. Mike N says:

Ichiro looks like he’s been bulking up. Steroids? HGH?

  122. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Ichiro is just horrible.

  123. Brian S. says:

The Yankees facebook had an update earlier today that showed a picture of Ichiro and was all “HIT MACHINE!!!” I laughed.

  124. Will The Thrill says:

Everyone our impact trade deadline acquisition : Ichiro Suzuki.

  125. Brian S. says:

    Tie this bitch up Grandy

  126. Mike N says:

OK. Who the fuck was that using hand sanitizer in the Yanks dugout!?!?!?!?!

  127. Tom says:

    Tony Randozzo ladies and gentleman

Not taking any chances on the appeal a 2nd time he’ll just ring him up himself, why ask 1st for actual help?

  128. DERP says:

    Let’s do this.

  129. Will The Thrill says:

Good pitcher or not, not scoring after a lead off double is pathetic. Steal third, sac bunt then sac fly, something! Anything!

  130. Mike N says:

The movement on that fastball was narshty!

  131. …well a little bit of luck. Nice. Let’s make it count please?

  132. Brian S. says:

    Make him pay Jeter.

  133. DERP says:

Grandy should have taken one for the team and knocked Verlander the fuck out.

  134. Mike N says:

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  135. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    Nice hit.

  136. Kramerica Industries says:

I’m very surprised to see the Yankees actually cash in on that mistake.

  137. DERP says:

    DP MACHINE

  138. Get Phelps Up says:

    Jeter!

  139. jjyank says:

    RISPWIN. Thank you, El Captain.

  140. DERP says:

    I just came.

  141. Kramerica Industries says:

    And again.

  142. Brian S. says:

    BOBINSON

  143. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Robbie!!!

  144. Mike N says:

    YEAHHHHHHHHHH! FUCK YESAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  145. Mike Axisa says:

    And you bitches were worried.

  146. Get Phelps Up says:

    RISPwins!!!

  147. CUYanks says:

    I hearby absolve Robbie Thompson.

  148. Fuck yeah Robbie!!!!!!!!! We need to hit a homer though. Otherwise everybody and their mother is going to come out with the “see this is how you beat good pitchers.”

  149. Mike N says:

Now *that* was some bat speed!

  150. RetroRob says:

Cano getting a hit on 0-2 is probably more shocking than Ibanez getting a hit off a lefty.

  151. Get Phelps Up says:

    Go yard Tex.

  152. DERP says:

Also nice that Verlander has had to throw a bunch of extra pitches.

  153. Brian S. says:

    Thanks for trying Teix

  154. Mike Axisa says:

    Swing the damn bat Tex.

  155. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Might want to try swinging that piece of wood, Tex.

  156. Mike N says:

    Good patience at the plate.

  157. CUYanks says:

Tie game and Verlander at 80 pitches. Great half inning there.

  158. tyrone sharpton says:

dammit i hope ichiro either gets 2 hits or none today…don’t know why but i find this 12 game 1 hit streak to be irritating

  159. DERP says:

I went from midnight to six on that strikeout.

  160. swishers fauxhawk says:

try lifting the bat off your shoulders babe

  161. mt says:

Wow – Jeter and Cano RISPwin 2 times over.

(TEX is like 3 for 45 against Verlander so I wasn’t expecting much there.)

  162. G says:

Ugh. Glad they tied it up, but just how many hanging breaking balls did Tex want? Way up in the zone…

On the other hand, what the hell was with Dirks’ throw? That’s easily one of the worst arms I’ve seen. Huge arch, slow, and way off line. Not complaining if it helps is but that makes Swisher look like Ichiro and Ichiro look like Zeus shooting lightning.

  163. Mike N says:

I got up to pour some wine. Was that a caught stealing to get the first out?

  164. Brian S. says:

    Yu Darvish blows

  165. pistol pete says:

Where the hell was Delmon Young going.

  166. I know alot of the Nova hate is residual, he hasn’t pitched well of late. But he’s allowed 2 homers to arguably the best all around hitter in baseball and a great lefty home run hitter.

  167. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    WTF Nova

  168. DERP says:

    Sweet inning

  169. Tom says:

Awesome… now Tony R asks for help on the check swing.

  170. Brian S. says:

    Don’t fuck this up Nova.

  171. Mike N says:

    Good movement on that fastball.

  172. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Phelps please

  173. Mike N says:

    Whoops…

  174. Kramerica Industries says:

Way to shit the bed, again, Ivan.

  175. Tom says:

    Another hanger…

    0-1 pitch.

  176. Get Phelps Up says:

How many terrible sliders are you going to throw?

  177. pistol pete says:

Fuck the curve ball Ivan they’re all hangers.

  178. Will The Thrill says:

What happened to Nova’s slider? He has stopped throwing it completely?

  179. DERP says:

    Die Nova

  180. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    WTF

    unfucking real

  181. Mike N says:

DAMN!!!!! The throw was in time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  182. Brian S. says:

Nova and Martin are fucking terrible.

  183. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Another bad drop my Martin. Wonderful.

  184. Kramerica Industries says:

Yankees make a Verlander error count to get the game tied.

And Nova gives up five straight hits to start the next inning. What an awful pitcher.

  185. DERP says:

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  186. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Rather half-assed attempt at that throw, Russell.

  187. Arya says:

He was out if Martin made any effort at all to bend down and catch that ball. Send Nova down to AAA already.

  188. Anthony says:

Nova is getting abused. Almost pity him.

  189. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Get his lousy ass out of the game please

  190. Tom says:

    Nice shutdown inning Nova.

  191. Karl Krawfid says:

    Go ahead defend this scrub.

  192. pistol pete says:

What the hell is Russell Martin doing, that runner was out by 4 steps if he fields that throw.

  193. CBean says:

    No more nova please

  194. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

How the fuck is he still pitching?

  195. Brian S. says:

I hope Nova doesn’t destroy all his trade value.

  196. your mom says:

    Cabrera juust missed.

  197. DT says:

    Demote Nova now.

  198. Matt says:

Every hitter is sitting on the breaking ball, and Nova has no control of it. Clearly that is the time to keep throwing it.

As usually, it’s a lack of focus this is killing this team. Somebody needs to light a fire under them, because up and down this roster the quality of play has been sub-par in all facets of the game these last few weeks.

  199. The Real Greg says:

Even though I am usually not one to hate, I’m close to hating Nova and the whole Yankee farm system for not having a quality replacement.

    Fuck you Nova

  200. Get Phelps Up says:

Phelps should take Nova’s place in the rotation.

  201. Mike N says:

    NO HANGING BREAKING BALLS!

  202. Tom says:

Well at least he didn’t throw that 0-2 curve over the middle again

    /looking for something good

  203. mt says:

We score against Verlander but it gets completely negated (and what would have happened if Delmon Young did not take off and get thrown out?)

Nova has one of the worst OPS of any qualifying starter in baseball.

Hopefully he does not say after the game he made good pitches.

  204. mt says:

We score against Verlander but it gets completely negated (and what would have happened if Delmon Young did not take off and get thrown out?)

Hopefully he does not say after the game he made good pitches.

  205. to the track...to the wall..we are tied! says:

I can’t wait for his “I thought I threw some nice pitches” quote after this latest crapfest.

  206. Mike N says:

    Phew.

  207. DERP says:

Give up hits to crap players. Strike out Cabrera.

  208. CUYanks says:

Crushing inning with Verlander on the mound, but if they can get him out of the game, Detroit’s bullpen is pretty spent from last night, and their setup man has been giving up HR’s like crazy to complement Valverde’s terribleness. Problem is, Leyland might let Verlander throw 135 pitches.

  209. CUYanks says:

Alert the authorities. Aaron Cook has just struck out Mike Napoli to push his season total to 5!

  210. DERP says:

If they really are thinking of replacing Nova with Phelps, they should put him in now so he can build his pitch count.

  211. jjyank says:

I feel like some of you guys need something to lighten the mood. So here, enjoy the Mars landing:

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4.....er-landing

  212. Tom says:

This isn’t a BABIP thing… it might be high, but it is high for a reason.

You had the Delomn Young infield single and the Austin Jackson jam job into CF, but pretty much everything else that inning was a mistake. The two bombs were also mistakes.

  213. Brian S. says:

Nova has a 2.57 xFIP this game. xFIP is dumb.

  214. DERP says:

So how many more starts will Nova get? Not how many he should, but how many he will.

  215. The Real Greg says:

I am sick and tired of this team and their farm system.

No aces from this farm system.

  216. Brian S. says:

Swisher swings at two balls again. God he’s terrible.

  217. Matt says:

Nova simply does not mix his pitches. For a guy who throws 93-95 consistently with a fastball that has decent run on it, Nova almost never uses it. Hitters know that with 2 strikes he will almost always go to his slider or curveball and they are waiting for it.

This is not a matter of stuff or injury. This is a matter of immaturity and a lack of focus on the mound. He has no clue how to pitch out there, and now that he has his slider he thinks he’s a power pitcher who has to strike everyone out. That doesn’t work in the Major Leagues unless you have control of those pitches.

    • Tremont says:

He had a pretty good clue had to pitch out there until a week or two ago. By the way, his fastball has been his least effective pitch this year. By far. Among the least effective fastballs in baseball.

      • Matt says:

Every hitter was waiting for the breaking ball. If you can’t hit your spots with it, then you better be changing speeds and eye level to get them off of it. Nova didn’t do that at all in that inning. It doesn’t matter what kind of fastball you have. Even Garcia has to throw his from time to time or he will get creamed.

Nova has never known how to pitch out there. He’s gotten away with it because his stuff is so good, but when he struggles he implodes because he doesn’t know how to make adjustments.

Look at some of the games he had earlier this year, like the one against the Reds. A career high 13 K’s, he clearly had outstanding stuff that day. But he gave up 5 runs because he fell in love with his slider and hung one to their best hitter, Joey Votto. A lack of focus, cockiness, whatever. He needs to stop with the excuses and get his head in the game.

  218. OMG! Bagels! says:

Have any of you ever been in a relationship with a moody asshole (male or female, I’m not making a sexist comment here for the ladies who read).

Sometimes when I come home and read game threads, it’s like I’m back in one of those relationships. You’re great, you suck, you’re my hero because you took out the garbage, you have a wrinkle in your shirt and I shall now cut off your head, you’re great, you suck, I hate the way you breath, oh don’t be silly–of course you can go out with the boys, did you just look at that woman, you are so wonderful, I hope you die, I love you, I hate you, you’re great, you suck.

    • Mike N says:

That’s exactly what’s fun about sports! It’s just like that, but you can turn off the fucking teevee whenever you want.

      • OMG! Bagels! says:

It’s not the TV. To my knowledge this doesn’t happen on TV.

        • Mike N says:

Sports don’t happen on teevee? Then what the fuck am I looking at right now?

BTW, speaking of bagels, I have been away from NYC for a while, and I need a fucking decent bagel.

        • Darren says:

It’s just the vicissitudes of watching a game and having thoughts that might nrmally remain internal, or at most get spoken to your buddy at the bar, take on seeming greater importance by dint of the fact they are appearing in black and white.

    • jjyank says:

Haha that sounds about right. Does this mean my last girlfriend was a troll?

    • Deep Thoughts says:

You’ve hit upon exactly because lots of posters are either hormone-soaked teenagers, or else active or prospective members of Prozac Nation. Blackjack attention span for a 162-game season without any appreciation for the overwhelming odds against success at every turn, both on the field and in talent evaluation and development.

  219. Kevin G. says:

    Eric Chavez > Justin Verlander

  220. Mike N says:

    CHAVEZ FOR POTG!!!!!!

    Srsly.

  221. DERP says:

    Chavez is our best hitter.

  222. Mike N says:

    Bunt! Oh, wait.

  223. tyrone sharpton says:

nova’s a WITCH! lynch the witch!

  224. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Ichiro is awesome.

  225. Rich says:

Is Nova’s ERA near Sweaty Freddy territory yet?

  226. Rich says:

Trivia answer is bum ass Jaret Wright. I hated him as an Indian in 1997 and hated him even more when he spit the bit..like Nova is today

  227. CBean says:

    No seriously take him out

  228. Mike N says:

Joba looks skinny! Have there been any reports about his weight?

  229. Tom says:

By the way I guess the first pitch to Fielder just had too much of the plate for Tony R to call it a strike.

And please stop throwing Delmon Young first pitch fastballs… don’t they have scouting reports on him?

  230. Will The Thrill says:

This is what happens when you stand pat and don’t get the kind of pitcher and hitter your team sorely needs. Even if the Yankees make the playoffs there are just too many flaws on this team for them to make it deep in October.

    • Brian S. says:

Every team has flaws. Flawed teams win the World Series all the time.

      • Mike N says:

Anyone who is making claims right now about what a team is going to do in October needs to get a grip.

      • Rich says:

+1 Tigers have no fielders, White Sox strikes out too much, Angels have no bullpen, A’s have no hitting (besides Cespedes and Reddick), Rangers have no starting pitching, etc. we have one major weakness, timely hitting, I rather have that then any major issues

      • Will The Thrill says:

Yes they do. But this team has too many flaws. Kuroda has been our only solid, consistent pitcher. The bullpen has been shaky lately. Our lineup is missing the speed element. The middle of the order kinda sucks at doing its job and the bottom of the order is as close to automatic outs as you can be.

    • Bunt Gardner says:

So, who was the pitcher they should have gotten?

  231. Brian S. says:

    Put in Phelps already.

  232. Kramerica Industries says:

    Nova is a fucking joke.

  233. DERP says:

Fuck this. Leave him and make him take it.

  234. ArchStanton says:

    What is Girardi thinking?

  235. Mike N says:

    Oh, for fuck’s sake.

HAHAHAHAH! The ESPN booth just sent Nova down to AAA.

  236. Tom says:

Swisher’s got to go to 3rd on that… looks like he would have had him by 10 feet.

  237. DT says:

    Demote this guy right now.

  238. Brian S. says:

    lol Nova’s ERA

  239. Arya says:

There’s no reason now to keep him on the major league roster. Send him down to AAA and let him find his control. Nova’s just been lobbing pitches up there and they’ve been teeing off on his mistakes. Phelps is ready and able to fill in.

  240. Mick taylor says:

In nova’s defense infante should have been called out on the check swing and maybe nova escapes the inning still tied. Of course Kay doesn’t even comment on it. Oh yeah, the Yankees are paying Pittsburgh 22 millio n to go 14-3. I know a. J was crap last year, butwhy could they not try to get something out of him instead of getting nothing for him from the pirates and actually paying for his 14 wins.

  241. David Phelps says:

You’re telling me I can’t pitch better than this?

  242. DERP says:

These pitching injuries are killers. We probably are going to have to stick with Nova.

  243. mt says:

Sutcliffe as Nova leaves – “he has lost his confidence and he may have to go to AAA to find it.”

Does anyone think Yanks are seriously considering sending Nova down?

Sometimes I think Yanks are swayed by win totals also. His OPS is horrible and as I recall a lot of his good games were against NL (nothing wrong with that but interleague is over for 2012.)

  244. Arya says:

It’s not Nova’s fault. He just got unlucky for the 2nd game in a row. All those pitches he left up were just bad luck.

  245. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Swisher needs to pitch in this game.

  246. Tom says:

So who pitches after Joba? Phelps?

The way the current bullpen is constructed you have 2 guys Girardi won’t want to use when trailing (Ro,So) and a bunch of specialists. They still seem an arm short in the pen, even with Joba back.

  247. Karl Krawfid says:

    Joba is close.

  248. Brian S. says:

I miss one month ago. Those were good times.

  249. Tom says:

96mph… good to see Joba’s velocity back up.

Perhaps the first game may have been some nervousness or the conditions on the field.

  250. Rich says:

I am red boarding now. But I say yes. Once Pettitte comes back, I rather have Freddy here sweating out 5 innings and trying then this guy sulking and completely losing it on the mound. He needs to go down to get his act together for next year. Because clearly he is not pitching in the postseason.

  251. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    lol Cabrera

  252. Athenian says:

Games like this are frustrating. Yankees have a decent lead and I think it put Girardi to sleep. Nova should have been pulled right after blowing the lead. Oh well.

  253. DERP says:

Jeter had the right idea to injure Verlander.

  254. Karl Krawfid says:

Lets see if Verlander gives up his usual 4 against the Yankees.

  255. WTF…I stop paying attention to do some accounting for the shop and 2 more runs. Nova’s been terrible lately…

  256. Karl Krawfid says:

    sitting fastball!

  257. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Preview of the playoffs folks

  258. Get Phelps Up says:

Wow, Yu Darvish is fucking terrible.

  259. Brian S. says:

I’m starting to worry that wrist injury might be one of those lingering ones that ruin your batting line.

  260. widget says:

Oh no the red sox are gonna win too. GREG HELP ME I CANT TAKE IT!!!!!!!!

  261. DERP says:

Call up Dellin for Nova. We’re not winning any games Nova starts anyway and Dellin is so wild that he could seriously injure someone.

  262. Athenian says:

The change up is Tex’s kryptonite, just like the inside slider to Cano, chase it all the time.

  263. DERP says:

They are clearly stretching Joba out to replace Nova.

  264. DERP says:

The Mariners are a fucking embarrassment.

  265. DERP says:

    Montero fucking sucks.

  266. Rich says:

It’s good that Fielder can hit, cause Giambi fields better than he does

  267. Tom says:

On the positive side, Jobva has looked a lot better, velocity up. Breaking stuff has been down for the most part.

Seems like he’s not throwing enough fastballs though.

And of course since his name is not Verlander, Tony Randozzo is going to squeeze the shit out of him.

  268. DERP says:

    Nice job by Joba.

  269. Get Phelps Up says:

Coming into this game, the Yankees had the best record in the AL East over the last 30 games.

  270. Jon says:

Over or under for Granderson: 200Ks this year?

  271. Athenian says:

Yanks had Verlander and the Super Nova blew his nut and stunk so bad, he couldn’t even get the ball to sit on the batting tee.

  272. Rich says:

One opposing manager I don’t hate is Jim Leyland. That scene he did last year mocking the umpire as classic

  273. Rich says:

Eric Gregg thinks that’s a ball

  274. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Not even close to a strike.

    • Tom says:

      Tony Randozzo is a joke…

I think the only reason Swisher didn’t get run is because he must have realized how bad a call that was.

  275. Athenian says:

Ut oh… Bobby V go the death call “Management’s Vote of Confidence”.

  276. DERP says:

Verlander is at 126 pitches in a game his team is winning by five runs.

  277. Tom says:

ESPN keeps saying season high strikeouts for Verlander, but I’m pretty sure Randozzo gets 3 of the K’s, no?

  278. Kramerica Industries says:

Just a masterful performance tonight by the Yankees.

  279. Rich says:

He was due for a great outing against us. But damn ump u deserve a toast for that strike zone tonight

  280. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Well at least Ichiro is helping the cause with his glove today.

  281. Karl Krawfid says:

    Who needs A-Rod!

    Not this Yankee team!

  282. Cuso says:

Wow Verlander, you really gonna strut with the help you’ve been getting?

  283. DERP says:

I think we have the better starter going in each of the next three games.

  284. DT says:

If anyone cares to see how pitiful the strike zone was today.
    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=7

  285. Brian S. says:

Why the fuck was Phelps pitching? He’s a long reliever.

  286. Athenian says:

9 k’s between Tex, Grandy, and Ichiro.

  287. Andruw's Smile says:

Nothing would make me happier right now than to at least put a scare into Valverde.

  288. Rich says:

Idk how people get annoyed with Soriano’s unstuck but is OK with this clown dancing and jumping around after a save.

  289. DERP says:

Jose Valverde is a stupid piece of shit and I hope he never finds happiness in life.

  290. xnyles says:

Ah yes, my buddy Valverde. I will give anything to see the yanks win a walk grand slam off this guy one day.

  291. Cuso says:

Qualls just shut a game down in Pittsburgh, haha.

  292. DERP says:

Isn’t everyone in Detroit unemployed? How can they afford to attend these games?

  293. Karl Krawfid says:

Grandersons numbers since he dropped that Ciraco ball please.

  294. Tom says:

Off topic but how did Aaron Cook hold the Rangers to 1 run in Fenway?

I know that offense has been struggling (until the Angels series), but I though he would get lit up.

  295. Athenian says:

Since the Yankees won’t win, I would love to see Jeter hit a line drive right off of Valverde’s knee. THAT would be worth 5 wins.

  296. captain kiwi says:

just got back in. please tell me joe got himself ejected because of the strikezone.

  297. Athenian says:

So serious off season move, get some “hitters” and less “power hitters”.

  298. Hal says:

Saying goodbye to a friend, but never forgetting him and the Yankee red Sox rivary http://bit.ly/RdYRR0

  299. Big Member says:

Huh Valverde did not cream his pants after getting 3 outs? What has the world come to?

  300. The DonSlaught says:

Nova hs fone from Dork Status to KING Status to No Status

  301. pistol pete says:

Unless ARod and Andy come back in full form which is very questionable the Yanks look like an early out in the playoffs. They peaked near the All Star game and have been a very average team since then. CC and Kuroda have been good but when they match the one two on playoff teams the Yanks could be in trouble. I thought Ichiro was a great pickup but he’s done, a singles hitter who can’t get on base. He’s not hurting the Yankees because he’s so good on defense but his hitting skills have deteriorated. I lobbied to bat him first but he’s done nothing to justify the promotion. Don’t like Grandy in the one hold, avg is too low and we waste his power for RBI’s.

  302. pistol pete says:

Yankees did virtually nothing at the break and are 5 and 11 in their last 16 and their lead is down to 5 1/2. The Yanks just don’t act like the Yanks of old, they don’t spend like they used to and act like accountants at the deadline instead of competitive leaders like George was. The team seems lifeless and better get it going because other teams have improved, Angels/Tigers/Rays(Longoria is back) and they just can’t coast for 50 more games.
