I’m going to set you up for disappointment here, but did you know the Yankees have scored a first inning run off Justin Verlander each of the last six times and in seven of the last eight times they’ve faced him, playoffs included? That seems kinda crazy and frankly I would be stunned if they made it seven straight and eight of nine tonight. Just seems unsustainable against a pitcher of that caliber, but I’m welcome to being surprised. Here’s the starting nine…

I know they’re facing another righty, but I’m surprised that McGehee has only gotten in the 1 game so far.
Meh, unless Nix is getting a start over him in the infield against a RHP to give Chavez a day off it’s not a big deal to me.

Because Ichiro is probably the least productive hitter in that lineup (I could see an argument for Martin, but that’s it), and he shouldn’t be getting more PA’s at the expense of better hitters.
Ichiro’s wRC+ is in the high 70s, Martins is at 90 I believe. So believe it or not Russel has actually been more productive than Ichiro this season.
I just threw Martin out there to appease the AVG is everything crowd. Of the players on the current roster, Ichiro has been better offensively than only Chris Stewart this season.
Are your expectations of Girardi’s line-up making that low? He finally learned that OBP is kinda useful.

And Grandy Ks on a breaking ball. What else is new? It’s become so easy to put him away this year. Just get two strikes on him and throw an offspeed pitch down. Also Jeter take a freaking pitch for once.
I wouldn’t go that far. His hitting is 25% better than league average, so it can’t be that easy to face him.
It’s also not east to face a guy who has the 2nd most homers in MLB.
All I’m saying is that his HRs don’t compensate for his Ks. I’d rather have a player who is going to hit .300 make contact (strikeout maybe 80-90 times) and hit just 15-20HRS.
Why? Plenty of those non-home run hits won’t lead to any runs at all. Besides, Curtis still walks at a pretty good clip.
The general assumption seems to be that if you hit singles instead of homers, it’ll magically translate to more hits total.
Well that half inning sucked.
Me thinks this game could get very ugly very fast. Detroit’s offense (IMO) is just too good.
I am so glad that I have already gotten to see so many Yankees games on teevee out of market! And now this one is on ESPN, and tomorrow is on MLB Network! And I am cooking a baked rigatoni, sausage, ricotta, and mozzarella casserole for dinner! And drinking wine!

Innings is a pretty imprecise way of measuring workload, and pitches seems immediately better, but I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the 8 or so warm up pitches each new inning a pitcher takes the mound.

This means nothing. They have been failing to get the job done with RISP all year. They look lost when they don’t hit a home run and have no explosiveness in the offense. Grandy strikes out in every other at bat, Jeter is a DP machine, Tex is a pop up machine, Martin, our starting catcher is hitting .190 and Cano has great skills but no plate discipline.

Probably because he would have been 138 years old if he was still alive.
He’s one of those true greats from that era who, for reasons I can’t fathom, never survived his time in the way that people like Cobb, Wagner, Speaker, and others succeeded in doing. This despite something like .338 avg and all those base hits over a pretty long career. I learned about him from “Superstar Baseball,” a board game I play with my grandsons.
Just looked him up, and I’m glad to know more about him. Apparently, he and Ty Cobb were arch rivals.

I’m sure facing the best pitcher in baseball had nothing to do with it.
So how do you account for Chavez and Martin? He is right . . . Those two actions are the two natural tendencies for Granderson and Jeter respectively. It IS hard to score with RISP when you have a player that nearly leads the Majors in Ks and Captain Groundout in immediate succession.
Curtis HAS to do better in spots like that. I know “strikeouts are just the same as other outs,” but in this case other kinds of outs might very well have scored a run.

As soon as Rob Thomson held that runner at 3rd I knew the Yanks would not score. Strike out prone lead off hitter vs strikeout pitcher, weak infield grounder by Jeter was the script and that’s exactly what happened.

Yeah, exactly. Every time they don’t send the runner from 3rd (very often this season) I get frustrated, but when I see the replay it’s almost always a slow runner getting a terrible jump from 2nd. Can’t really blame Thompson, though I feel like maybe the team as a whole aren’t getting great secondary leads from second.
That one game we had two thrown out at home since then its base to base bullshit it 90 ft 180 from second with a good lead its 170 or less thats not hard to score on and you see clubs with slow guys like boston and chicago do it all time its playing safe.

Nova needs to go back to doing what he did in 2011. I feel like he’s tinkering with too many different pitches. Pitches that are probably his 3rd and 4th best. Last year he was fastball/curveball and maybe a little slider every now and then. This year he’s throwing too many changeups and in that process is losing command on his fastball. Just my opinion.

Incredibly so, but it seems like (not basing this on any research) Ivan never has a shut down inning. Whenever we score a run, you can almost be sure that he’s going to give it back.

As usually, it’s a lack of focus this is killing this team. Somebody needs to light a fire under them, because up and down this roster the quality of play has been sub-par in all facets of the game these last few weeks.

Nova simply does not mix his pitches. For a guy who throws 93-95 consistently with a fastball that has decent run on it, Nova almost never uses it. Hitters know that with 2 strikes he will almost always go to his slider or curveball and they are waiting for it.
This is not a matter of stuff or injury. This is a matter of immaturity and a lack of focus on the mound. He has no clue how to pitch out there, and now that he has his slider he thinks he’s a power pitcher who has to strike everyone out. That doesn’t work in the Major Leagues unless you have control of those pitches.
He had a pretty good clue had to pitch out there until a week or two ago. By the way, his fastball has been his least effective pitch this year. By far. Among the least effective fastballs in baseball.
Every hitter was waiting for the breaking ball. If you can’t hit your spots with it, then you better be changing speeds and eye level to get them off of it. Nova didn’t do that at all in that inning. It doesn’t matter what kind of fastball you have. Even Garcia has to throw his from time to time or he will get creamed.
Nova has never known how to pitch out there. He’s gotten away with it because his stuff is so good, but when he struggles he implodes because he doesn’t know how to make adjustments.
Look at some of the games he had earlier this year, like the one against the Reds. A career high 13 K’s, he clearly had outstanding stuff that day. But he gave up 5 runs because he fell in love with his slider and hung one to their best hitter, Joey Votto. A lack of focus, cockiness, whatever. He needs to stop with the excuses and get his head in the game.

Yes they do. But this team has too many flaws. Kuroda has been our only solid, consistent pitcher. The bullpen has been shaky lately. Our lineup is missing the speed element. The middle of the order kinda sucks at doing its job and the bottom of the order is as close to automatic outs as you can be.

Unless ARod and Andy come back in full form which is very questionable the Yanks look like an early out in the playoffs. They peaked near the All Star game and have been a very average team since then. CC and Kuroda have been good but when they match the one two on playoff teams the Yanks could be in trouble. I thought Ichiro was a great pickup but he’s done, a singles hitter who can’t get on base. He’s not hurting the Yankees because he’s so good on defense but his hitting skills have deteriorated. I lobbied to bat him first but he’s done nothing to justify the promotion. Don’t like Grandy in the one hold, avg is too low and we waste his power for RBI’s.
Yankees did virtually nothing at the break and are 5 and 11 in their last 16 and their lead is down to 5 1/2. The Yanks just don’t act like the Yanks of old, they don’t spend like they used to and act like accountants at the deadline instead of competitive leaders like George was. The team seems lifeless and better get it going because other teams have improved, Angels/Tigers/Rays(Longoria is back) and they just can’t coast for 50 more games.
