Game 108: Can they make it seven straight?

I’m going to set you up for disappointment here, but did you know the Yankees have scored a first inning run off Justin Verlander each of the last six times and in seven of the last eight times they’ve faced him, playoffs included? That seems kinda crazy and frankly I would be stunned if they made it seven straight and eight of nine tonight. Just seems unsustainable against a pitcher of that caliber, but I’m welcome to being surprised. Here’s the starting nine…

CF Curtis Granderson
SS Derek Jeter
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Nick Swisher
3B Eric Chavez
DH Ichiro Suzuki
Russell Martin

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s episode of “All the Extra-Base Hits” starring Ivan Nova game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Enjoy.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Ichiro as DH … SMFH

    • jjyank

Yeah really…what the hell is Ibanez doing in left field if Ichiro is playing anyway?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        I hope it’s a miscommunication somewhere along the way…because that’s just silly.

  • vin

I know they’re facing another righty, but I’m surprised that McGehee has only gotten in the 1 game so far.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Meh, unless Nix is getting a start over him in the infield against a RHP to give Chavez a day off it’s not a big deal to me.

  • http://twitter.com/matt__harris Matt :: Sec110

    Why isn’t Giradi going:
    Ichiro
    Jeter
    Cano
    Tex
    Granderson
    Swish
    Ibanez/Jones
    Chavez/Nix
    Martin

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Because Ichiro is probably the least productive hitter in that lineup (I could see an argument for Martin, but that’s it), and he shouldn’t be getting more PA’s at the expense of better hitters.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Ichiro’s wRC+ is in the high 70s, Martins is at 90 I believe. So believe it or not Russel has actually been more productive than Ichiro this season.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

I just threw Martin out there to appease the AVG is everything crowd. Of the players on the current roster, Ichiro has been better offensively than only Chris Stewart this season.

    • vin

Are your expectations of Girardi’s line-up making that low? He finally learned that OBP is kinda useful.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yes…let’s let the one guy in the line up whose OBP is lower than Russel Martin and bat him lead off.

  • Kevin G.

If they don’t score in the first inning I’m gonna blame you for jinxing it Axisa.

    • Paul VuvuZuvella

Start the blaming…that ship sailed while he typed the Headline.

      • Kevin G.

I don’t understand. I thought it was perfectly reasonable for me to criticize Mike for something that he has no control over.

        • Paul VuvuZuvella

Huh? We all control the jinxes we unleash on the innocent.

  • captain kiwi

haha. i’m heading off to family dinner, so i’ll miss most of this episode. let’s go yanks!

  • The Troll

Way to go, Mike. You’ve jinxed an already inconsistent offense . . . Now they won’t score until the ninth inning ! ! ! ! ! LOOK AT WHAT YOU’VE DONE!!!

  • Tom

Is Rick Sutcliffe the worst color commentator going today?

He is the ultimate prisoner of the moment, and he will probably say “one of the best…” about 50 times tonight

    • CUYanks

He selected Jeff Samardzija to build his franchise around.

    • https://twitter.com/#!/DannyAielloUCF DAiello18

Ok so 15 pitches in, I have 7 “one of the best” so far.. Make that 8. I’ll take the over.

  • Will The Thrill

I’m not looking forward to this series at all. The lineup is a bit short without A-Rod, the bottom of our lineup hasn’t been betting it done, and of course we still suck with RISP.

  • RetroRob

    Nolan Ryan disagrees.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

didn’t catch the game last night, did ichiro continue the one hit per game streak?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

He hit a routine fly ball to CF that Saunders lost in the sun and missed. It was scored a double.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Cool. So the dream of 57 straight with a single hit still lives.

    • Get Phelps Up

Mariners CF lost a routine fly ball in the sun for a double.

    • jjyank

Yeah, but the OF really just lost the ball in the son. And Ichiro got a “double”.

  • The Troll

    Mike Axisa, Master Jinxer.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Damnit Mike. All your fault.

  • Will The Thrill

And Grandy Ks on a breaking ball. What else is new? It’s become so easy to put him away this year. Just get two strikes on him and throw an offspeed pitch down. Also Jeter take a freaking pitch for once.

    • jjyank

I wouldn’t go that far. His hitting is 25% better than league average, so it can’t be that easy to face him.

      • Get Phelps Up

It’s also not east to face a guy who has the 2nd most homers in MLB.

      • Will The Thrill

All I’m saying is that his HRs don’t compensate for his Ks. I’d rather have a player who is going to hit .300 make contact (strikeout maybe 80-90 times) and hit just 15-20HRS.

        • jjyank

Why? Plenty of those non-home run hits won’t lead to any runs at all. Besides, Curtis still walks at a pretty good clip.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The general assumption seems to be that if you hit singles instead of homers, it’ll magically translate to more hits total.

  • Brian S.

    Well that half inning sucked.

  • The Troll

Me thinks this game could get very ugly very fast. Detroit’s offense (IMO) is just too good.

  • Mike N

I am so glad that I have already gotten to see so many Yankees games on teevee out of market! And now this one is on ESPN, and tomorrow is on MLB Network! And I am cooking a baked rigatoni, sausage, ricotta, and mozzarella casserole for dinner! And drinking wine!

    Now the Yanks better win!

  • Brian S.

Those were both strikes to AJax…

    • Tom

Yeah it’s going to be a long night if those are balls – both were actually in the zone according to pitch f/x, not even in the gray area.

      • Brian S.

Reminds me of game 3 of the ALDS. AJax working five strike walks against CC…

        • Brian S.

Sorry for the ellipses by the way.

  • Mike N

Nice play, Chavez! How fortunate is it to have him while A-Rod is out!?

  • Mike N

    Good start, Ivan!

  • Brian S.

Imagine Miggy’s numbers in an offensive ballpark. I wonder if Hank didn’t intervene and Cashman pursued Cabrera instead of Rodriguez which prospects we would have traded for him.

    • Will The Thrill

Yeah I remember Miami wanted Hughes and Chamberlain for Cabrera but alas the Yankees are prospect huggers like the rest of us.

  • jjyank

Nice start, Nova. I really want to call you SuperNova again, so let’s keep that up.

  • Pat D

Over the last week, watching Yankees games has seemed like a nuisance. It’s taking time away from playing with my new phone.

Jeez, after 6 1/2 years of doing cell phone tech support and swearing I wouldn’t become one of those people, I’ve become one of those people.

  • Brian S.

    Felix or Price for CY

    • Pat D

I think Verlander is deserving again. Weaver, nah.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Felix.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Tex is just never going to figure out the changeup, is he?

    • Will The Thrill

Nope. I guess change ups in the dirt and fastballs down the middle look the same to him.

    • Brian S.

He’s always been an extreme fastball hitter in his career. Go look at his fangraphs page.

  • Will The Thrill

Verlander is such a diva. He seems like a douche who acts fake tough.

    • Mike N

      Wut?

    • CUYanks

      He’s got some good commercials.

      • Pat D

Yea, isn’t he dating Kate Upton now? Guess that one worked out for him.

        • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

They’re “dating” but she works so much they’ve only actually hung out for 15 minutes once back in April. EA Sports is paying her for the MLB season to agree that they’re “dating.”

          ….convincing scenario, no?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Nice battle Raul.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Ibanez is having a hell of an AB.

  • CUYanks

Innings is a pretty imprecise way of measuring workload, and pitches seems immediately better, but I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the 8 or so warm up pitches each new inning a pitcher takes the mound.

  • Get Phelps Up

    Still a really nice AB.

  • Pat D

Gonna be hard to win if he’s getting those calls.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

WOW Nova better get that call. That was way off the plate.

  • Brian S.

That’s outside. It’s game 3 of the ALDS all over again.

  • Will The Thrill

    WAYYYYYY OUTSIDE!

  • captain kiwi

sticking around for a bit, and saw those pitches to raul and swish – they’re really gonna give verlander those pitches? this game is gonna be a pain in the ass.

  • Tom

Good grief the umpire is calling the zone based on reputation.

Going to be a long night when he’s giving Verlander that crap on the outside (both the strike 2 to Ibanez and the strike 1 to Swisher)

    • Tom

Oops – meant strike 3 to Ibanez.

Even the Red Sox homer doing the play by play on ESPN was calling it generous

  • Will The Thrill

This series will suck hard. I’m just hoping the Orioles, Rays and Red Sox don’t win too many games.

  • CUYanks

Aaron Cook just never ceases to amaze me with his K%. I wouldn’t want to be 1 of those 4 guys he struck out this year.

    • Get Phelps Up

      Montero was one of them.

      • CUYanks

Montero, Anthony Gose, Chone Figgins, and 1 Yankee. Can you guess who?

        • Get Phelps Up

          Andruw?

        • DERP

          Jones

          • CUYanks

Correct, sadly. That’s a regular murderer’s row. Looks something like the heart of the Astros roder.

  • Brian S.

    Nova blows

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    fuck. fuckedy fuck fuck fuck.

  • Pat D

What a cheap home run that was. Barely cleared the fence.

    Waiting for it…

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

There’s more of that bad luck Ivan’s been having lately…

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Not sure if serious.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Not sure if serious about me being serious…

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That wasn’t bad luck…that was just poor pitch execution.

      • jjyank

        And…Prince Fielder.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

yeah, that could have something to do to it.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I’d rather not stamp “/sarcasm” at the end of every one of my posts but I will if need be.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

sarcasm is a hard thing to translate into and out of text form, which is why I usually do add a /sarcasm at the end.

          • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I like to keep the people guessing.

    • Brian S.

That’s called one of the worst changeups of the game.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Little Cecil hit that homer because of the called strike 3 to Ibanez.

  • Will The Thrill

So this is what a real middle of the order looks like…

    • CUYanks

      Brennan Boesch hitting 5th!

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Not gonna lie, I started Boesch in fantasy today because I figured Nova was a good matchup given the XBH tendencies.

  • Brian S.

His changeup is fucking terrible. He’s given up like a thousand home runs off of it this year and he only throws it like 5% of the time.

  • Chip

Wow, maybe Nova should just stop throwing the changeup

  • Mike N

C’mon, Nova. Now keep your cool.

  • Will The Thrill

    RIP Ivan Nova 2010-2012

    • Chip

….and then he strikes out the next 3 hitters

  • Chip

There we go, throw the lefties the curve instead of the change Ivan

  • DERP

I want to make a joke about Detroit’s unemployment, but I am afraid it is going to be lousy.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Balkin’ Bob Doodyhead.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Well…that was a good rebound.

  • DERP

    Nice recovery.

  • captain kiwi

those were awkward k’s… but whatever!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Did anybody else watch the Curiosity Rover landing last night? Pretty cool stuff (especially if you’re a space geek like me.)

    • jjyank

No, but one of my friends did and had the greatest Facebook status ever.

“So, what if they find a bunch of mutant space cats on Mars, and Curiosity just landed there?”

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, well done by your friend.

      • Pat D

        Awesome.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

So fucking cool. The NASA live stream was pretty incredible.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It was. The pictures came in so quick to. It really was an amazing moment, and I’m really upset that only 200,000 people where watching according to the view counter on the bottom.

  • Pat D

Geez, I feel like I can predict which commercials I’m going to see every YES commercial break.

I guess this is why I haven’t been watching every single inning anymore. All these commercials annoy the shit out of me.

    • jjyank

I’m glad MLB.TV doesn’t show commercials. Most of the time, I’d rather sit in silence.

  • DERP

The Seattle Mariners are a bunch of useless pieces of shit.

  • Brian S.

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but look at that changeup he throws 4% of the time.

    http://www.fangraphs.com/stats.....#pitchtype

    -3.49 wCH/C

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Damn. That is a bad pitch.

    • DERP

No need to apologize for being annoying. You never have apologized before.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Unfortunately…..one run….King Felix….tough to score…..umm

    Nevermind

  • Kevin G.

    Crisis averted: no-hitter over.

  • Will The Thrill

Whew. At least we won’t get perfect gamed/no hit.

  • Mike N

    Chavez for POTG!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

There’s one of those Ichiro productive outs Greg keeps telling us about.

  • Brian S.

All of Ichiro’s line drives are soft floaters. That’s why his BABIP sucks.

    • Will The Thrill

All his bat speed is gone. After all he is 38.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Is this umpire just going to give Verlander every strike call? That would really suck.

  • Will The Thrill

Chances someone drives Chavez in : 2%

  • mt

Ichiro is pathetic in RISP situations – also seems very impatient.

  • Mike N

    Martin for POTG!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Oh man…..

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

I know he was a dead duck, but you feel it coming.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    …Robbie Thompson.

    • jjyank

Meh, Chavez was just rounding third when the LF was releasing his throw. A good throw has him out by a mile.

  • mt

This is where Grandy gets a scoring fly ball as opposed to Jeter hitting into a DP, right?

    • mt

      Or just the standard strikeout.

  • Brian S.

Make these bitches regret trading you Curtis.

    • Brian S.

Or don’t. God his strikeouts are infuriating.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

If Jeter was leading off, this would have been an instaGIDP.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

But b/c it’s Curtis it will be strikeout then 6-4

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Hey, Axisa. How’s this season of Breaking Bad so far? (I’m catching up on the DVR, just finished the second episode).

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Christ. This strikezone is gigantic.

  • DERP

    brutal

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

    CURTIS!

  • Will The Thrill

    Grandy with the Ks.

    :-(

  • teddy

yanks are the only team that can’t score a runner from 2nd base on a single and as usual granderson never does his job

    • DERP

Yankees are also the only team in first place in the best division in baseball.

      • Mike N

        FOR NOW!

      • Will The Thrill

This means nothing. They have been failing to get the job done with RISP all year. They look lost when they don’t hit a home run and have no explosiveness in the offense. Grandy strikes out in every other at bat, Jeter is a DP machine, Tex is a pop up machine, Martin, our starting catcher is hitting .190 and Cano has great skills but no plate discipline.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

“They have been failing to get the job done with RISP all year.”

They’re hitting .304 with RISP over the last 37 games.

        • Tremont

How do they win any games?!

      • Brian S.

        AL West might be better.

    • Get Phelps Up

“and as usual granderson never does his job”

Granderson is hitting .407 with RISP since June 20.

  • DERP

Where is Alex to hit one off the wall?

  • Tom

Another bullshit call to Granderson that was the difference between a 2-0 and 1-1 count (though not as bad as a couple of the other ones).

This umpire is having too much of an impact on the game.

  • Mike N

Why have I never heard of Nap Lajoie before?

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Probably because he would have been 138 years old if he was still alive.

    • TomH

He’s one of those true greats from that era who, for reasons I can’t fathom, never survived his time in the way that people like Cobb, Wagner, Speaker, and others succeeded in doing. This despite something like .338 avg and all those base hits over a pretty long career. I learned about him from “Superstar Baseball,” a board game I play with my grandsons.

      • Mike N

Just looked him up, and I’m glad to know more about him. Apparently, he and Ty Cobb were arch rivals.

  • Will The Thrill

That’s what happens when you have a walking strikeout and groundball hitter at the top of your order. #RISPFAIL

    • DERP

I’m sure facing the best pitcher in baseball had nothing to do with it.

      • The Troll

So how do you account for Chavez and Martin? He is right . . . Those two actions are the two natural tendencies for Granderson and Jeter respectively. It IS hard to score with RISP when you have a player that nearly leads the Majors in Ks and Captain Groundout in immediate succession.

      • Heisenberg’s Hat

Curtis HAS to do better in spots like that. I know “strikeouts are just the same as other outs,” but in this case other kinds of outs might very well have scored a run.

    • DERP

By the way, this isn’t twitter.

  • The Troll

Way to put some muscle into it Jeter!

  • CUYanks

I’m not scared of the Rays, but it should be noted that Evan Longoria is getting activated tomorrow.

  • Arya

As soon as Rob Thomson held that runner at 3rd I knew the Yanks would not score. Strike out prone lead off hitter vs strikeout pitcher, weak infield grounder by Jeter was the script and that’s exactly what happened.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

    Leadoff doubles are great.
Leadoff doubles that never score are not as great.
I’m already pulling my hair out. Or I would if I wasn’t bald.

  • Mike N

It seemed like Verlander was pitching around Jeter. I wonder if he could have just taken the 3-1 pitch?

  • Ichy balls

    Robbie thompson needs to go
How many runs are we going to waste it bullshit every other team scores on singles to lf and cf.

    • Brian S.

It’s not Thompson’s fault our entire team is slow as fuck. Chavez would have been thrown out.

      • CUYanks

Yeah, exactly. Every time they don’t send the runner from 3rd (very often this season) I get frustrated, but when I see the replay it’s almost always a slow runner getting a terrible jump from 2nd. Can’t really blame Thompson, though I feel like maybe the team as a whole aren’t getting great secondary leads from second.

      • Ichy balls

That one game we had two thrown out at home since then its base to base bullshit it 90 ft 180 from second with a good lead its 170 or less thats not hard to score on and you see clubs with slow guys like boston and chicago do it all time its playing safe.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

Watch the replay. Chavez would have been out by a mile.
          It was a good hold.

    • jjyank

Really? I thought Chavez would have been out by a mile if he went for it.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Chavez would have been out by a mile.
Thompson needs to go because he doesn’t send runners into certain outs?

    • Mike N

That play wouldn’t have even been close if he sent Chavez. The catcher could have met him halfway to third with the ball.

  • Brian S.

Verlander has five balls called strikes so far. Nova has two strikes called balls and two balls called strikes so he is even.

  • Pat D

I think that Girardi is destined to be tossed tonight.

Unless Randazzo just doesn’t take it personally, which would be surprising.

    • Mike N

If he didn’t throw him out between innings based on the discussion they showed, then Girardi’s gonna have to chest bump him or kick dirt on him or something to get tossed. Actually, I would love to see Girardi kick dirt! Never gonna happen, of course.

  • Arya

I think even balkin Bob Davidson could call a better game than this. I guess he’ll be calling a game this series, too, so it’s unlikely to get any better.

    • Get Phelps Up

I’m really looking forward to the day when computerized strikezons are used throughout baseball.

    • rich

Tomorrow, so expect some fireworks from both managers.

  • The Troll

By the way guys . . . I thought I should share this with y’all . . . I heard through the grapevine that Greg double dips and never tips the pizza delivery guy. Shameful.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I usually hate the bunt…but in retrospect would’ve been ok with Suzuki bunting. Best case scenario he beats it out, runners on first and second. Worst case scenario straight to the pitcher, no advance and the innings plays out exactly as it did.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

Ahhh, the Yanks would have just found a different way to not score that run.

  • Will The Thrill

Is it too late to trade Teixeira back to the Angels for Trout and sign Fielder?

    *not serious

    • Brian S.

If they keep Teixeira then they still draft Trout because they they had two draft picks.

    • DERP

We also have to give up CC. Good comment though.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Sutcliffe and Hershiser are always “tickled” when the Yankees’ struggle.

    • Will The Thrill

      What? What are they saying?

  • DERP

Cano has great skills but NO PLATE DISCIPLINE

  • Kramerica Industries

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t Bob Davidson one of the umpires the last time these two met, and caused a shitfest from Girardi?

    Or was that Joe West?

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    What a stupid park.

    • CUYanks

At least they don’t have a big wall just past shortstop or a hill in center.

    One out runner not moved

    • DERP

      He should have tagged, AMIRITE?

      • CUYanks

Tagging from first is one of the most underrated bad baserunning plays in most cases.

    • rich

Not Cano’s fault. Boesch is not exactly Roberto Clemente in right field.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    We’re not in YS3 Mark, c’mon.

  • Will The Thrill

Fucking huge ballpark. This is why the Yankees suck when they play here.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They’ve won four of their last six games there, playoffs included.

      • DERP

Axisa is slaying people left and right today.

      • Will The Thrill

Mike. Can you let me have anything?!

  • Mike N

Loud out. Seemed like Teix knew he didn’t get it all when he hit it, though.

  • Ichy balls

Two down runner still at first

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Did robbie just steal a base?

  • Ichy balls

    Finally two batters too late

  • Brian S.

Swisher has been so fucking bad lately.

    • Will The Thrill

I guess that sports psychologist didn’t do much for him.

      • Brian S.

He probably cost himself 20 million or so by having such a subpar season (by his standards).

  • Ichy balls

    Nice at bat swish

  • JonS

Dafuq did Cano just do? Did he actually steal a base? lol

    5-tool!!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

In other news, the Mega-Powers collide

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Nova’s pitched well so far, minus one pitch.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      …2 pitches.

    • CUYanks

      Two.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

    Nice 0-2 pitch.

  • Mike N

    Ugh.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    More bad luck for Ivan.

    • Mike N

Luck? Looked like a bad pitch to me.

  • DERP

    Kill me.

  • Tom

    Nice 0-2 pitch Ivan….

  • Kramerica Industries

That’s the third time in four games this year where Cabrera hit one out to dead center there.

    Jesus.

    • CUYanks

At least Cory Wade’s not on the team anymore.

  • Brian S.

Send him to fuckin AAA already. He’s had one good month.

  • Will The Thrill

Has him 0-2, throws him a strike. Y?

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

I think it’s clear by now that Nova doesn’t always get the ball where he wants to. He wasn’t trying to hang an 0-2 pitch right over the middle of the plate.

  • JonS

Did Nova and Phil switch places?

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Oh brother

  • DERP

The Indians must really want someone in next year’s draft.

  • jjyank

Real nice turn by Robbie there!

  • CUYanks

Let’s get the pitch count up this inning!

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Or score some runs…

      • CUYanks

        Can’t argue with this.

    • Mike N

Are we counting his warm ups?

      • CUYanks

        Yes.

  • DERP

    This ump can GTH

  • Will The Thrill

Nova needs to go back to doing what he did in 2011. I feel like he’s tinkering with too many different pitches. Pitches that are probably his 3rd and 4th best. Last year he was fastball/curveball and maybe a little slider every now and then. This year he’s throwing too many changeups and in that process is losing command on his fastball. Just my opinion.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lets see if we learned anything from last time…

  • G

It all started with mentioning the first inning run streak.

    Blame Axisa and/or Canada.

  • DERP

Is there anyone who doesn’t love Chavez?

  • Mike N

    CHAVEZ FOR POTG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, now I say bunt him over and sac him in! Or hit a homer!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Bunt towards Miggy, Ich.

  • RetroRob

The tatoo artist probably wrote a curse, althougj Kuroda or Ichiro probably would have notified him!

    • DERP

Can someone decipher this post for me?

      • jjyank

Chavez’s tattoo. It’s his 3 kid’s names written in Japanese.

  • Mike N

Ichiro looks like he’s been bulking up. Steroids? HGH?

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Ichiro is just horrible.

  • Brian S.

The Yankees facebook had an update earlier today that showed a picture of Ichiro and was all “HIT MACHINE!!!” I laughed.

    • Will The Thrill

I think maybe they thought it was 2002.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

At least they got him for cheap.

  • Will The Thrill

Everyone our impact trade deadline acquisition : Ichiro Suzuki.

    • CUYanks

Hate when the HP umps call check swings.

  • DERP

    Let’s do this.

  • Will The Thrill

Good pitcher or not, not scoring after a lead off double is pathetic. Steal third, sac bunt then sac fly, something! Anything!

  • Mike N

The movement on that fastball was narshty!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

…well a little bit of luck. Nice. Let’s make it count please?

  • Brian S.

    Make him pay Jeter.

    • Brian S.

      There ya go

  • DERP

Grandy should have taken one for the team and knocked Verlander the fuck out.

    • CUYanks

As long as he promises not to get injured himself.

      • RetroRob

Yeah, Verlander is actually bigger than Granderson.

Fuck yeah Robbie!!!!!!!!! We need to hit a homer though. Otherwise everybody and their mother is going to come out with the “see this is how you beat good pitchers.”

  • Mike N

Now *that* was some bat speed!

  • RetroRob

Cano getting a hit on 0-2 is probably more shocking than Ibanez getting a hit off a lefty.

  • Get Phelps Up

    • Get Phelps Up

      …Or do that.

      We still tied it though.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

  • DERP

Also nice that Verlander has had to throw a bunch of extra pitches.

  • Brian S.

    Thanks for trying Teix

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Swing the damn bat Tex.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Might want to try swinging that piece of wood, Tex.

  • Mike N

    Good patience at the plate.

  • CUYanks

Tie game and Verlander at 80 pitches. Great half inning there.

  • tyrone sharpton

dammit i hope ichiro either gets 2 hits or none today…don’t know why but i find this 12 game 1 hit streak to be irritating

  • DERP

I went from midnight to six on that strikeout.

    • jjyank

At least you won’t need to find a new pair of pants.

  • swishers fauxhawk

try lifting the bat off your shoulders babe

  • mt

Wow – Jeter and Cano RISPwin 2 times over.

(TEX is like 3 for 45 against Verlander so I wasn’t expecting much there.)

  • DERP

    ugh

  • G

Ugh. Glad they tied it up, but just how many hanging breaking balls did Tex want? Way up in the zone…

On the other hand, what the hell was with Dirks’ throw? That’s easily one of the worst arms I’ve seen. Huge arch, slow, and way off line. Not complaining if it helps is but that makes Swisher look like Ichiro and Ichiro look like Zeus shooting lightning.

    • CUYanks

In hindsight, maybe they SHOULD’ve sent Chavez earlier.

      • jjyank

I can’t fault anyone for that. Even a semi-decent throw has Chavez out in time for the catcher to have a tea party before making the tag.

    • RetroRob

He is not a good OFer and yes his arm is weak.

  • Mike N

I got up to pour some wine. Was that a caught stealing to get the first out?

    • 28 this year

      yup/

    • jjyank

      Yup. Great throw by Russ.

  • Brian S.

    Yu Darvish blows

    • CUYanks

I find it funny how everyone was immediately preemptively anointing him as “not like Dice K”

      • Brian S.

        He’s nothing like Nova.

  • pistol pete

Where the hell was Delmon Young going.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I know alot of the Nova hate is residual, he hasn’t pitched well of late. But he’s allowed 2 homers to arguably the best all around hitter in baseball and a great lefty home run hitter.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

of course as soon as I say it…

    • Mike N

Nova has been pretty damn good so far, I’d say. His pitch count is very good.

      Now, let’s get a DP.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Fuck you Ivan. I’m done defending your ass.

      • Mike N

        Fickle!

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Incredibly so, but it seems like (not basing this on any research) Ivan never has a shut down inning. Whenever we score a run, you can almost be sure that he’s going to give it back.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

4 straight hits to the bottom of the order.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    WTF Nova

  • DERP

    Sweet inning

  • Tom

Awesome… now Tony R asks for help on the check swing.

  • Brian S.

    Don’t fuck this up Nova.

  • Mike N

    Good movement on that fastball.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Phelps please

  • Mike N

    Whoops…

  • Kramerica Industries

Way to shit the bed, again, Ivan.

  • Tom

    Another hanger…

    0-1 pitch.

  • Get Phelps Up

How many terrible sliders are you going to throw?

  • pistol pete

Fuck the curve ball Ivan they’re all hangers.

  • Will The Thrill

What happened to Nova’s slider? He has stopped throwing it completely?

  • DERP

    Die Nova

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    WTF

    unfucking real

  • Mike N

DAMN!!!!! The throw was in time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brian S.

Nova and Martin are fucking terrible.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Another bad drop my Martin. Wonderful.

  • Kramerica Industries

Yankees make a Verlander error count to get the game tied.

And Nova gives up five straight hits to start the next inning. What an awful pitcher.

  • DERP

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Rather half-assed attempt at that throw, Russell.

    • CUYanks

Really looked lazy there. DId he think the runner had already scored or something?

  • Arya

He was out if Martin made any effort at all to bend down and catch that ball. Send Nova down to AAA already.

  • Anthony

Nova is getting abused. Almost pity him.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Get his lousy ass out of the game please

  • Tom

    Nice shutdown inning Nova.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Go ahead defend this scrub.

  • pistol pete

What the hell is Russell Martin doing, that runner was out by 4 steps if he fields that throw.

  • CBean

    No more nova please

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

How the fuck is he still pitching?

  • Brian S.

I hope Nova doesn’t destroy all his trade value.

    • Mike N

      hahahahahah

      • Brian S.

Cost controlled starters that throw 200 innings have value. I just hope that his ERA isn’t around 6 by the end of the year.

  • your mom

    Cabrera juust missed.

  • DT

    Demote Nova now.

  • Matt

Every hitter is sitting on the breaking ball, and Nova has no control of it. Clearly that is the time to keep throwing it.

As usually, it’s a lack of focus this is killing this team. Somebody needs to light a fire under them, because up and down this roster the quality of play has been sub-par in all facets of the game these last few weeks.

  • The Real Greg

Even though I am usually not one to hate, I’m close to hating Nova and the whole Yankee farm system for not having a quality replacement.

    Fuck you Nova

    • DT

We have a quality replacement in Phelps

      • The Real Greg

I want a goddamn ACE from our farm system. We have only developed 3 aces in our farm system’s history. Ford, Guidry, and Pettitte.

And don’t talk about draft status because aces don’t always come from the first round

        • DT

We have Pineda, who was projected to be an ace before his injury.

          • The Real Greg

But he might not ever pitch again!

        • Get Phelps Up

Come on, how many non-first round aces have been developed in the last 10 years? Not so many.

          • The Real Greg

Jon Lester, Yovani Gallardo, Dan Haren, Trevor Cahill and Jordan Zimmerman.

And those are just the second round picks.

I could include Matt Cain because he was drafted in a spot after we drafted

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

              No he wasn’t.

            • DERP

You have really low expectations of what an ace is.

            • Get Phelps Up

Have you seen some of those guys pitch this year?

            • Tremont

I doubt you would consider Cahill or Gallardo aces if they were Yankees. Their ERAs would likely be 4ish every year in the AL East with Yankee Stadium as a home field. So you’re basically infuriated with the Yanks for not landing one of 3 guys.

    • Get Phelps Up

They have a quality replacement named David Phelps.

  • Get Phelps Up

Phelps should take Nova’s place in the rotation.

  • Mike N

    NO HANGING BREAKING BALLS!

  • Tom

Well at least he didn’t throw that 0-2 curve over the middle again

    /looking for something good

  • mt

We score against Verlander but it gets completely negated (and what would have happened if Delmon Young did not take off and get thrown out?)

Nova has one of the worst OPS of any qualifying starter in baseball.

Hopefully he does not say after the game he made good pitches.

  • mt

      Sorry for double post.

I can’t wait for his “I thought I threw some nice pitches” quote after this latest crapfest.

    • Rich

Maybe he can see that to the media following the Triple A squad.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

That’s my favorite Joe Buck quote.

  • Mike N

    Phew.

  • DERP

Give up hits to crap players. Strike out Cabrera.

    • your mom

      go figure huh?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I thought we traded AJ Burnett last season.

    • Rich

Shows his immaturity. He thinks he is better than what he is.

  • CUYanks

Crushing inning with Verlander on the mound, but if they can get him out of the game, Detroit’s bullpen is pretty spent from last night, and their setup man has been giving up HR’s like crazy to complement Valverde’s terribleness. Problem is, Leyland might let Verlander throw 135 pitches.

  • CUYanks

Alert the authorities. Aaron Cook has just struck out Mike Napoli to push his season total to 5!

  • DERP

If they really are thinking of replacing Nova with Phelps, they should put him in now so he can build his pitch count.

    • Freddy’s Mom

That’s a good suggestion. Who has Girardi’s cell? Text him, wouldja?

  • jjyank

I feel like some of you guys need something to lighten the mood. So here, enjoy the Mars landing:

    http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4.....er-landing

  • Tom

This isn’t a BABIP thing… it might be high, but it is high for a reason.

You had the Delomn Young infield single and the Austin Jackson jam job into CF, but pretty much everything else that inning was a mistake. The two bombs were also mistakes.

  • Brian S.

Nova has a 2.57 xFIP this game. xFIP is dumb.

    • http://yankeesblogtbnl.blogspot.com Derek

Not sure your level of sarcasm…but sample size

  • DERP

So how many more starts will Nova get? Not how many he should, but how many he will.

    • Freddy’s Mom

1-2 max, is my guess, though also quite possibly none.

    • Brian S.

He won’t be taken out unless he becomes injured.

    • Brian S.

No aces from this farm system.

      so much hate

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Then go root for another team, you don’t seem emotionally or mentally equipped to deal with this one. You won’t be missed, trust me.

    • Bunt Gardner

I think you need a vacation from baseball…seriously.

    • Derek

Ah yes, because aces grow like trees…

      • Get Phelps Up

There is an Ace Tree in Greg’s backyard.

  • Brian S.

Swisher swings at two balls again. God he’s terrible.

  • Matt

Nova simply does not mix his pitches. For a guy who throws 93-95 consistently with a fastball that has decent run on it, Nova almost never uses it. Hitters know that with 2 strikes he will almost always go to his slider or curveball and they are waiting for it.

This is not a matter of stuff or injury. This is a matter of immaturity and a lack of focus on the mound. He has no clue how to pitch out there, and now that he has his slider he thinks he’s a power pitcher who has to strike everyone out. That doesn’t work in the Major Leagues unless you have control of those pitches.

    • Tremont

He had a pretty good clue had to pitch out there until a week or two ago. By the way, his fastball has been his least effective pitch this year. By far. Among the least effective fastballs in baseball.

      • Matt

Every hitter was waiting for the breaking ball. If you can’t hit your spots with it, then you better be changing speeds and eye level to get them off of it. Nova didn’t do that at all in that inning. It doesn’t matter what kind of fastball you have. Even Garcia has to throw his from time to time or he will get creamed.

Nova has never known how to pitch out there. He’s gotten away with it because his stuff is so good, but when he struggles he implodes because he doesn’t know how to make adjustments.

Look at some of the games he had earlier this year, like the one against the Reds. A career high 13 K’s, he clearly had outstanding stuff that day. But he gave up 5 runs because he fell in love with his slider and hung one to their best hitter, Joey Votto. A lack of focus, cockiness, whatever. He needs to stop with the excuses and get his head in the game.

        • Tremont

          You’re overrating his stuff. Severely.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Chavez is the man.

  • OMG! Bagels!

Have any of you ever been in a relationship with a moody asshole (male or female, I’m not making a sexist comment here for the ladies who read).

Sometimes when I come home and read game threads, it’s like I’m back in one of those relationships. You’re great, you suck, you’re my hero because you took out the garbage, you have a wrinkle in your shirt and I shall now cut off your head, you’re great, you suck, I hate the way you breath, oh don’t be silly–of course you can go out with the boys, did you just look at that woman, you are so wonderful, I hope you die, I love you, I hate you, you’re great, you suck.

    • Mike N

That’s exactly what’s fun about sports! It’s just like that, but you can turn off the fucking teevee whenever you want.

      • OMG! Bagels!

It’s not the TV. To my knowledge this doesn’t happen on TV.

        • Mike N

Sports don’t happen on teevee? Then what the fuck am I looking at right now?

BTW, speaking of bagels, I have been away from NYC for a while, and I need a fucking decent bagel.

        • Darren

It’s just the vicissitudes of watching a game and having thoughts that might nrmally remain internal, or at most get spoken to your buddy at the bar, take on seeming greater importance by dint of the fact they are appearing in black and white.

    • jjyank

Haha that sounds about right. Does this mean my last girlfriend was a troll?

        Yes.

    • Deep Thoughts

You’ve hit upon exactly because lots of posters are either hormone-soaked teenagers, or else active or prospective members of Prozac Nation. • Kevin G.

    Eric Chavez > Justin Verlander

  • Mike N

    CHAVEZ FOR POTG!!!!!!

    Srsly.

  • DERP

    Chavez is our best hitter.

  • Mike N

    Bunt! Oh, wait.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

No seriously. He should’ve They don’t exactly have Eric Chavez manning 3rd. Against Verlander I feel like Ichiro should be bunting at Miggy everytime, and Granderson and Jeter should try it at least once.

      • Mike N

It couldn’t be worse than what’s happening.

  • tyrone sharpton

nova’s a WITCH! lynch the witch!

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        ?

  • Rich

Is Nova’s ERA near Sweaty Freddy territory yet?

  • Rich

Trivia answer is bum ass Jaret Wright. I hated him as an Indian in 1997 and hated him even more when he spit the bit..like Nova is today

  • CBean

    No seriously take him out

  • DERP

    yuck

  • Mike N

Joba looks skinny! Have there been any reports about his weight?

  • Tom

By the way I guess the first pitch to Fielder just had too much of the plate for Tony R to call it a strike.

And please stop throwing Delmon Young first pitch fastballs… don’t they have scouting reports on him?

  • Will The Thrill

This is what happens when you stand pat and don’t get the kind of pitcher and hitter your team sorely needs. Even if the Yankees make the playoffs there are just too many flaws on this team for them to make it deep in October.

    • Brian S.

Every team has flaws. Flawed teams win the World Series all the time.

      • Mike N

Anyone who is making claims right now about what a team is going to do in October needs to get a grip.

      • Rich

+1 Tigers have no fielders, White Sox strikes out too much, Angels have no bullpen, A’s have no hitting (besides Cespedes and Reddick), Rangers have no starting pitching, etc. we have one major weakness, timely hitting, I rather have that then any major issues

      • Will The Thrill

Yes they do. But this team has too many flaws. Kuroda has been our only solid, consistent pitcher. The bullpen has been shaky lately. Our lineup is missing the speed element. The middle of the order kinda sucks at doing its job and the bottom of the order is as close to automatic outs as you can be.

        • DERP

We are missing the speed element guys. How will we ever win without the speed element?

        • DT

This CC guy was pretty good outside of the Sox game…

        • Tremont

Will, explain to me how the Yanks have the best record and run differential in the American League.

    • Bunt Gardner

So, who was the pitcher they should have gotten?

  • Brian S.

    Put in Phelps already.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Nova is a fucking joke.

  • DERP

Fuck this. Leave him and make him take it.

  • ArchStanton

    What is Girardi thinking?

  • Mike N

    Oh, for fuck’s sake.

HAHAHAHAH! The ESPN booth just sent Nova down to AAA.

  • Tom

Swisher’s got to go to 3rd on that… looks like he would have had him by 10 feet.

  • DT

    Demote this guy right now.

  • Brian S.

    lol Nova’s ERA

  • Arya

There’s no reason now to keep him on the major league roster. Send him down to AAA and let him find his control. Nova’s just been lobbing pitches up there and they’ve been teeing off on his mistakes. Phelps is ready and able to fill in.

  • Mick taylor

In nova’s defense infante should have been called out on the check swing and maybe nova escapes the inning still tied. Of course Kay doesn’t even comment on it. Oh yeah, the Yankees are paying Pittsburgh 22 millio n to go 14-3. I know a. J was crap last year, butwhy could they not try to get something out of him instead of getting nothing for him from the pirates and actually paying for his 14 wins.

    • Karl Krawfid

Dude has been trash all year. No need to defend him.

    • Rich

Seriously, u can’t be serious. He was not meant for NY, and any team at wanted him wasn’t going to give any prospects for him

    • http://yankeesblogtbnl.blogspot.com Derek

Hindsight is 20/20. The theory he needed a change of environment seems to have worked out. No guarantee he would do this here.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

One missed check-swing call is not the reason for Nova’s disaster start.

    • Bunt Gardner

If you honestly think AJ would be pitching that well for NY in the Al east, well….

  • David Phelps

You’re telling me I can’t pitch better than this?

  • DERP

These pitching injuries are killers. We probably are going to have to stick with Nova.

  • mt

Sutcliffe as Nova leaves – “he has lost his confidence and he may have to go to AAA to find it.”

Does anyone think Yanks are seriously considering sending Nova down?

Sometimes I think Yanks are swayed by win totals also. His OPS is horrible and as I recall a lot of his good games were against NL (nothing wrong with that but interleague is over for 2012.)

    • CUYanks

He hasn’t lost his confidence. He’ll say he pitched well after the game.

  • Arya

It’s not Nova’s fault. He just got unlucky for the 2nd game in a row. All those pitches he left up were just bad luck.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Swisher needs to pitch in this game.

  • Tom

So who pitches after Joba? Phelps?

The way the current bullpen is constructed you have 2 guys Girardi won’t want to use when trailing (Ro,So) and a bunch of specialists. They still seem an arm short in the pen, even with Joba back.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Joba is close.

  • Brian S.

I miss one month ago. Those were good times.

  • Tom

96mph… good to see Joba’s velocity back up.

Perhaps the first game may have been some nervousness or the conditions on the field.

  • Rich

I am red boarding now. But I say yes. Once Pettitte comes back, I rather have Freddy here sweating out 5 innings and trying then this guy sulking and completely losing it on the mound. He needs to go down to get his act together for next year. Because clearly he is not pitching in the postseason.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    lol Cabrera

    • Tom

That was pretty weak. But if it’s not Verlander on the mound, that’s probably ruled a hit.

  • Athenian

Games like this are frustrating. Yankees have a decent lead and I think it put Girardi to sleep. Nova should have been pulled right after blowing the lead. Oh well.

    • CUYanks

They never had the lead in the game, though.

      • The Troll

Perhaps he means in the division?

      • Athenian

Sorry, meant division. Not the game. This game means nothing other than a potential loss and a game pick up for Baltimore.

  • DERP

Jeter had the right idea to injure Verlander.

  • Karl Krawfid

Lets see if Verlander gives up his usual 4 against the Yankees.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

WTF…I stop paying attention to do some accounting for the shop and 2 more runs. Nova’s been terrible lately…

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    fuck it. it’s bus time.

  • Karl Krawfid

    sitting fastball!

  • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

    Preview of the playoffs folks

    • Rich

Really, cause the Tigers has to pass the White Sox and that’s not a guarantee. Let’s relax on a team that is 57-50

      • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Doesn’t have to be the tigers. Rotation is crap after Kuroda and the RISP failures will get even worse against playoff pitching

        • Bunt Gardner

Then go pull for another team and don’t worry about it.

          • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Lol, no one can post any kind of realism on this board. Been a Yankee fan for 30 years, but also realistic about injuries and this teams issues.

            • DERP

Even if you don’t care for CC, how could you say he is crap? You said something really dumb and are surprised at the reaction that you got. Really?

              • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Never said anything about CC, I said after Kuroda, CC being the obvious number one starter.

                • Get Phelps Up

                  Pettitte? Hughes?

                  • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

No guarantee Pettitte comes back like he left or at all.

                    • Get Phelps Up

He’ll be back unless there’s another setback.

            • Bunt Gardner

They have flaws, but saying “rotation is crap after Kuroda” is not being realistic.

              • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Your right, I’m the only one on this board that ever says anything negative, so jump on my comment right? Gfy

                • DERP

People have tearing Greg to shreds today.

                  • Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin

Derp and bunt, such a cute couple

                    • Bunt Gardner

Typical response when someone can’t back up their irrational opinions.

                    • Alkaline

Ah, so resort to personal attacks to anyone who disagrees with what you say, which is an obviously disputable statement. That will convince people!

                    • Get Phelps Up

I’m really starting to doubt your “Yankee fan for 30 years” claim.

    • widget

It’s been the playoffs the past two years. This year will continue to trilogy.

  • Get Phelps Up

Wow, Yu Darvish is fucking terrible.

    • Rich

Does he nibble like Dice-K used too?

      • Get Phelps Up

        He has like a 4.5 BB/9.

    • DERP

Impossible. None of the other playoff contenders have flaws.

    • Athenian

Wait until Boston lights up Dempster. Two good non signings by the Yanks.

  • Brian S.

I’m starting to worry that wrist injury might be one of those lingering ones that ruin your batting line.

  • widget

Oh no the red sox are gonna win too. GREG HELP ME I CANT TAKE IT!!!!!!!!

  • DERP

Call up Dellin for Nova. We’re not winning any games Nova starts anyway and Dellin is so wild that he could seriously injure someone.

  • Athenian

The change up is Tex’s kryptonite, just like the inside slider to Cano, chase it all the time.

  • DERP

They are clearly stretching Joba out to replace Nova.

  • DERP

The Mariners are a fucking embarrassment.

  • DERP

    Montero fucking sucks.

  • Rich

It’s good that Fielder can hit, cause Giambi fields better than he does

  • Tom

On the positive side, Jobva has looked a lot better, velocity up. Breaking stuff has been down for the most part.

Seems like he’s not throwing enough fastballs though.

And of course since his name is not Verlander, Tony Randozzo is going to squeeze the shit out of him.

  • DERP

    Nice job by Joba.

  • Get Phelps Up

Coming into this game, the Yankees had the best record in the AL East over the last 30 games.

  • Jon

Over or under for Granderson: 200Ks this year?

    • Steve

      Over

  • Athenian

Yanks had Verlander and the Super Nova blew his nut and stunk so bad, he couldn’t even get the ball to sit on the batting tee.

  • Rich

One opposing manager I don’t hate is Jim Leyland. That scene he did last year mocking the umpire as classic

  • Rich

Eric Gregg thinks that’s a ball

    • Athenian

Think the ghost of Eric Gregg looks like a storm cloud, in size?

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Not even close to a strike.

    • Tom

      Tony Randozzo is a joke…

I think the only reason Swisher didn’t get run is because he must have realized how bad a call that was.

  • Athenian

Ut oh… Bobby V go the death call “Management’s Vote of Confidence”.

  • DERP

Verlander is at 126 pitches in a game his team is winning by five runs.

  • Tom

ESPN keeps saying season high strikeouts for Verlander, but I’m pretty sure Randozzo gets 3 of the K’s, no?

  • Kramerica Industries

Just a masterful performance tonight by the Yankees.

  • Rich

He was due for a great outing against us. But damn ump u deserve a toast for that strike zone tonight

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Well at least Ichiro is helping the cause with his glove today.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Who needs A-Rod!

    Not this Yankee team!

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Wow Verlander, you really gonna strut with the help you’ve been getting?

    • Tom

Yes. He’s a bit of a prima donna.

This is the same guy that got mad when someone tried to bunt on him when he had a no hitter going (it was a 2 or 3 run game)

Same guy that blamed getting lit up in the allstar game because he was “trying to put on a show” instead of just pitching.

      • DT

He also gets pissed if his routine is slightly off. This guy is a complete douche.

        • Will (the other one)

          Haters gonna hate, I suppose.

    • Athenian

He could locate his fast ball. Something Nova couldn’t do.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Not questioning his stuff, just the decision to strut after that inning.

  • DERP

I think we have the better starter going in each of the next three games.

  • DT

If anyone cares to see how pitiful the strike zone was today.
    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=7

    • Brian S.

      -2 for the Yankees.
      +14 for the Tigers.

Game 3 of the ALDS all over again.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Look at all the green triangles inside the zone

  • Brian S.

Why the fuck was Phelps pitching? He’s a long reliever.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No he’s not. He’s never been identified as “the long reliever.” He’s just not a matchup guy.

  • Athenian

9 k’s between Tex, Grandy, and Ichiro.

  • Andruw’s Smile

Nothing would make me happier right now than to at least put a scare into Valverde.

  • Rich

Idk how people get annoyed with Soriano’s unstuck but is OK with this clown dancing and jumping around after a save.

    • Rich

      Untuck*

  • DERP

Jose Valverde is a stupid piece of shit and I hope he never finds happiness in life.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

He’s often found happiness all over us…..which is why we all feel that way.

  • xnyles

Ah yes, my buddy Valverde. I will give anything to see the yanks win a walk grand slam off this guy one day.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Qualls just shut a game down in Pittsburgh, haha.

    • CUYanks

      AJ Burnett is 14-3 there.

  • DERP

Isn’t everyone in Detroit unemployed? How can they afford to attend these games?

    • JonS

      We bailed them out.

  • Karl Krawfid

Grandersons numbers since he dropped that Ciraco ball please.

    • FIPster Doofus

      5 for 33, 13 K’s, 4 BBs, one XBH (HR).

  • Tom

Off topic but how did Aaron Cook hold the Rangers to 1 run in Fenway?

I know that offense has been struggling (until the Angels series), but I though he would get lit up.

  • Athenian

Since the Yankees won’t win, I would love to see Jeter hit a line drive right off of Valverde’s knee. THAT would be worth 5 wins.

  • captain kiwi

just got back in. please tell me joe got himself ejected because of the strikezone.

  • Athenian

So serious off season move, get some “hitters” and less “power hitters”.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Juan Pierre
      Get it done Cash.

      • Athenian

Yikes. Just a less hitting Granderson.

        • Steve

More like a less hitting Gardner.

          • Athenian

            precisely.

  • Hal

Saying goodbye to a friend, but never forgetting him and the Yankee red Sox rivary http://bit.ly/RdYRR0

  • Big Member

Huh Valverde did not cream his pants after getting 3 outs? What has the world come to?

  • The DonSlaught

Nova hs fone from Dork Status to KING Status to No Status

  • pistol pete

Unless ARod and Andy come back in full form which is very questionable the Yanks look like an early out in the playoffs. They peaked near the All Star game and have been a very average team since then. CC and Kuroda have been good but when they match the one two on playoff teams the Yanks could be in trouble. I thought Ichiro was a great pickup but he’s done, a singles hitter who can’t get on base. He’s not hurting the Yankees because he’s so good on defense but his hitting skills have deteriorated. I lobbied to bat him first but he’s done nothing to justify the promotion. Don’t like Grandy in the one hold, avg is too low and we waste his power for RBI’s.

  • pistol pete

Yankees did virtually nothing at the break and are 5 and 11 in their last 16 and their lead is down to 5 1/2. The Yanks just don’t act like the Yanks of old, they don’t spend like they used to and act like accountants at the deadline instead of competitive leaders like George was. The team seems lifeless and better get it going because other teams have improved, Angels/Tigers/Rays(Longoria is back) and they just can’t coast for 50 more games.
