Game 112: “Canada, eh? Almost made it.”
ByThe Yankees haven’t won a three-game series in Toronto since May 2009, back when Marco Scutaro and Alex Rios were still Blue Jays. Injuries have complete decimated the Jays this season, especially the pitching staff. Staff ace Ricky Romero will be on the mound tonight but has seen his performance suffer in a major way, to the point where the front office is probably hoping he’s hiding a minor injury so they at least have some kind of explanation. If there was ever a time for the Bombers to take two of three from the Jays in Canada, this is it. Here’s the starting nine…

Not exactly related to this game, but the more I think about it, the more I hate that there is no check for umpires. The perfect example is Jim Joyce in Armando Gallagraga’s perfect game. He blew the call, he came out and said he blew the call, on not exactly a bang-bang play and he faced zero repercussions for it. I don’t know about you, but if I messed up at my job to that level, I would be in serious trouble.

Weak AB by Jeter. I would’ve taken the next two pitches after Romero got 3-0. For a lead off guy Jeter sure does a horrible job of taking pitches and letting the rest of the hitters see what the pitcher is throwing.

True. Montero in particular might have been a tougher sell to a team that can’t use the DH though.
I was just using Montero as an example as a top 5 prospect type guy, but yeah I could see why getting him to NL team for a legit player would have been tough. I just wish Banuelos had been totally healthy the past two years and improved as we hoped…he could either be starting w/ the big club come September or used in a trade for a Justin Upton or CarGo(total pipe dream)
Yeah, Banuelos’ injury sucked for several reasons. I know he’s still very young, especially for AAA, so his stock probably didn’t take that much of a hit. But it probably took enough of a hit to not be the headliner of a trade package. Oh well.
I think the Yanks will try to keep Phelps and trade Nova.
If Nova keeps this up, they’d be selling low on Nova. I dunno what they’d do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they traded Phelps while his value was relatively high.
Even with Nova’s recent struggles, he’d still have to profile as at least a mid rotation guy in the NL West. (Yeah talking about for Upton)

I’m not a huge Freddy Garcia fan, but I don’t understand all the Phelps should be starting talk – while I’d like the kid to get a shot at some point, it’s not like Freddy is pitching poorly as a 5th starter.

You pretty much summed up my opinion here as well. In a vacuum, I would love to see Phelps get a shot. But Freddy has been perfectly serviceable, and I doubt Nova would get the boot for Phelps (at least at this point in time). If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I feel ya, that sucks. But If Girardi leaves Garcia in, and Johnson hits another homer, half the people here would be calling for Girardi’s head on a spike.
This is definitely true. I kinda like the “squeak-a-quality-start-out-of-Garcia-with-a-lead-then-get-out-of-dodge” strategy.
I agree, anytime you get a quality start from Freddy, unless he’s only thrown like 65-70 pitches you count your blessings and go to the pen.
Yeah. If there’s a deficit or a big lead, then I might leave him in, but if it’s a tie/close lead then why not cash out your chips when you’re ahead.
If it’s tied, I see could see Joe letting him start the 7th to maybe try to get him the win, cause as much as they shouldn’t pitchers and managers think about it, with a short leash.

Command still off, but I’d rather have high velocity and weak command than the other way around. The command will return.
