Game 112: “Canada, eh? Almost made it.”

The Yankees haven’t won a three-game series in Toronto since May 2009, back when Marco Scutaro and Alex Rios were still Blue Jays. Injuries have complete decimated the Jays this season, especially the pitching staff. Staff ace Ricky Romero will be on the mound tonight but has seen his performance suffer in a major way, to the point where the front office is probably hoping he’s hiding a minor injury so they at least have some kind of explanation. If there was ever a time for the Bombers to take two of three from the Jays in Canada, this is it. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
DH Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
LF Andruw Jones
3B Jayson Nix
Russell Martin
CF Ichiro Suzuki
1B Casey McGehee

RHP Freddy Garcia

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

“For the french fries and gravy, sir.”

    Awesome title, Mike.

  2. Brian S. says:

I think I actually like the Blue Jays somewhat.

  3. Steve D Fl says:

    awesome!! lmao

  4. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    No Grandy?

  5. It scares the crap out of me that our 6-7 are Nix and Martin…

  6. Brian S. says:

Does Girardi not know of Romero’s reverse platoon split?

  7. Gonzo says:

Anyone else see that the Yankees can spend 700k on undrafted players?

  8. Not exactly related to this game, but the more I think about it, the more I hate that there is no check for umpires. The perfect example is Jim Joyce in Armando Gallagraga’s perfect game. He blew the call, he came out and said he blew the call, on not exactly a bang-bang play and he faced zero repercussions for it. I don’t know about you, but if I messed up at my job to that level, I would be in serious trouble.

  9. Will The Thrill says:

Weak AB by Jeter. I would’ve taken the next two pitches after Romero got 3-0. For a lead off guy Jeter sure does a horrible job of taking pitches and letting the rest of the hitters see what the pitcher is throwing.

  10. So is anybody going to be here, or is everybody watching the Giant game?

  11. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

  12. RetroRob says:

Looking at that goofy hair on Rasmus, I wonder what the starting nine would be for a team with the worst hair — head and face — would look like?

  13. Brian S. says:

    Don’t walk Escobar…

  14. Mike N says:

I sure hope the bullpen is ready to work tonight.

  15. Brian S. says:

    Quit trying to hit Robbie!

  16. DERP says:

Salvador Perez is doing some great work.

  17. RetroRob says:

Robbie, you don’t just have decide to swing before the pitch leaves the hand.

  18. Mike N says:

    Nice AB, Cano!

  19. Brian S. says:

Mathis looks like he is having fun out there.

  20. Bahaha, the first pitch to Druw was basically right down the middle according to Gameday.

  21. Brian S. says:

  22. Mike N says:

Yeah!! Let’s give Freddy some runs!!!!!!!!

  23. Arya says:

Finally a defensive miscue in our favor. Great bunt.

  24. Great result, terrible process. It should’ve been two on via the walk. and you bunt first pitch to give away an out?

  25. Mike Stanley says:

  26. Get Phelps Up says:

I hope Mike Scioscia saw that.

  27. chilango says:

We get a break early. About time. Keep the line moving..

  28. Will The Thrill says:

Heh. Mathis. Is it me or does it seem like teams just don’t make errors anymore when they play the Yankees like they used to? Yay luck!

  29. Brian S. says:

I kind of feel bad for Romero.

  30. Mike N says:

    MOAR RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!

  31. RetroRob says:

All Ichiro career stats are meaningless. They’re almost all from when was good.

Fortunately he’s still tough to double up.

  32. DERP says:

    Machado sucks.

  33. Karl Krawfid says:

Home pitcher getting booed when he throws over.

    That is pretty bad.

  34. Will The Thrill says:

What is that guy in the stands yelling? Anyone else hear that?

    • RetroRob says:

He was yelling at Casey Mccccgeeeeheeeee (nope, won’t learn how to spell it), saying was heading back to the minors. Odd guy to pick on.

Perhaps someone from the McGee clan upset with how his name is spelled.

  35. Mike N says:

    C’mon, McGhee!!!!

  36. Brian S. says:

    Dammit Casey…

  37. DERP says:

Omar Quintinilla is such a bitch

  38. Will The Thrill says:

Please don’t let Romero settle down. It’s only the 2nd inning and Sweaty Freddy is pitching.

    • sangreal says:

I don’t disagree, but I don’t get why these posts come up when Freddy is pitching and not Nova (whom Freddy has been pitching better than since returning from the BP)

  39. Brian S. says:

    That was a shot

  40. Brian S. says:

    Game thread is dead.

  41. DERP says:

    Stupid fucking asshole Moustakas

  42. Mike N says:

  43. Hahaha Romero is probably livid, huh?

  44. Mike N says:

  45. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

First game of a series. Pitcher chased by the… what do you think? End of the fourth?

    I like.

  46. jjyank says:

So maybe the shift isn’t so great.

  47. bobtaco says:

Force the throw, make things happen.

  48. jjyank says:

It’s entertaining to watch the other team’s defensive problems.

  49. Will The Thrill says:

Romero needs to calm the fuck down. His body language probably isn’t making his teammates and coaches too happy.

  50. Brian S. says:

    Jones strikes out too much.

  51. Will The Thrill says:

Romero’s reverse split is so evident in this game. Righties having a hard time with those breaking pitches in. Girardi needs to stop being so old school.

  52. Will The Thrill says:

Argh. Meredith’s voice is so whiny. Like nails on a chalkboard!

  53. Mike N says:

    Excellent report by Meredith!

  54. DERP says:

We could have had Yankee fan Jenny Dell instead of MM.

  55. Will The Thrill says:

Jays has a lot of outfielders, big leaguers and prospects alike. I wonder what their plan is for guys like Gose and Marisnick.

    • Brian S. says:

Marisnick won’t be ready until late next season or the beginning of 2014 right? He’s in AA? Gose LF, Rasmus CF, Bautista RF.

  56. Colby Rasmus says:

I hit a baseball so I look like a slob. I don’t change my underwear or shower.

    • Mike N says:

Srsly. I was concerned that Freddy was just burning through pitches and was gonna be gone in five innings, even with a lead, but he seems to have settled in.

  57. DERP says:

Always nice to leave their best hitter on deck.

  58. DERP says:

So bbref has Romero’s nickname as RR Cool Jay. Worst nickname ever.

  59. chilango says:

    Nice shut down inning.

  60. Kramerica Industries says:

    So, I’ve concluded that either:

    1) Michael Kay hates Canada, in which case I hate that big-headed bastard.

    2) Michael Kay doesn’t have a valid passport and is too cheap to get it validated.

Trivia question answers – Blue Jays (duh), Tigers, Marlins.

  61. BJ says:

    “Littering aaand… littering aaand…”

  62. Will The Thrill says:

No way Swisher gets a huge deal with the year he’s had, right?

  63. Karl Krawfid says:

    Boston, Marlins, Toronto.

  64. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

Delayed tonight. What did I miss?

  65. Brian S. says:

    Stop it Freddy!

  66. Damnit Freddy!!!

  67. DERP says:

    The Royals fucking suck.

  68. Brian S. says:

Enough of this shit. Put in Phelps.

  69. Mike N says:

    Fucking Freddy.

  70. chilango says:

Fuckin Sweaty Freddy not even good for 5.

  71. Kramerica Industries says:

    This inning is going swell.

  72. vicki says:

mike, your friend kelly johnson’s getting on my nerves.

  73. chilango says:

Hope Joe doesn’t leave him in to long. Get Phelps up

  74. Brian S. says:

Are you seriously going to walk Omar Vizquel…?

  75. Will The Thrill says:

I’m legitimately disappointed that we only scored 3 runs off Romero. Also why is Garcia in the rotation still? Phelps is wasting away…

  76. DERP says:

    I fucking hate Manny Machado.

  77. Mike N says:

    C’mon, Freddy! One more out!

  78. Kramerica Industries says:

That was a painful swing from Vizquel.

  79. your mom says:

Thank god for the offensively inept Vizquel.

  80. Good job working out of that with limited damage oh Sweaty One.

  81. RetroRob says:

    More runs.

  82. Tom says:

Good to see Mathis’ Yankee killing ability hasn’t traveled with him to Toronto.

Was the Yunel bunt a good one or did it just take the Yankees by surprise?

  83. chilango says:

Romero’s settled down and Freddy’s unsettling. ARGH

  84. your mom says:

We really made Romero work in that inning.

  85. Will The Thrill says:

This is going to be one of those games where we didn’t take advantage of a struggling pitcher early and then let him settle down and lose isn’t it?

  86. Mike N says:

Please have an easy inning, Freddy.

  87. Mike N says:

Freddy’s pitches look like they have no “pop”, like they’re just lobs or something.

  88. Oh god Ma and Pa and Mark are talking about Phelps to the pen in a permenant way. Same argument people used for Joba, the stuff plays up, the adrenaline and all that stuff.

  89. Brian S. says:

Woah. 3.95 ERA since returning? Damn I look dumb.

    • jjyank says:

Freddy? His reputation from April has been preceding him a bit too much around here, especially with regards to Phelps.

      • RetroRob says:

Some people want the #5 to pitch like a top-of-the-rotation guy.

Freddy is fine for his role. Be nice if the Yankees would score a few more runs when he pitches, including in this game.

  90. Mike N says:

Rasmus looks like he just walked off the set of the Partridge Family.

  91. DERP says:

    Nix does something good here.

  92. Brian S. says:

Nix will hit a home run.

  93. Nice Scheister says:

If you would have told me at the start of the season Jayson Nix would be hitting ahead of Ichrio and Martin I’d have laughed in your face, histarically.

  94. Mike N says:

They’re saying that A-Rod also threw a football today.

  95. Tom says:

5IP, 2ER from the #5 starter? Granted he isn’t facing the toughest of lineups with the injuries, but I’ll take that every time.

I’m not a huge Freddy Garcia fan, but I don’t understand all the Phelps should be starting talk – while I’d like the kid to get a shot at some point, it’s not like Freddy is pitching poorly as a 5th starter.

7 starts since the beginning of July and he’s given up more than 3ER one time. ONE time.

  96. DERP says:

    Shit Jayson, get it together!

  97. Nice Scheister says:

Martin and McGeehe have similar batting stances and at mannerisms at the plate. Just an observation.

  98. Sigh…this went from it looked like Romero would be out by the end of the 4th to there’s a chance he gets through the 7th. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy we’re still winning, but wtf happened?

  99. Brian S. says:

    Luke Hochevar=bust

  100. Arya says:

Freddy’s done the job once again. It’s time to look at sending Nova down to AAA and letting Phelps take that role. Freddy has been keeping us in ballgames, Nova couldn’t keep us in a game where he was spotted a 7 run lead. If Nova struggles again this series send him down immediately.

  101. RetroRob says:

    FaceBook is evil.

  102. chilango says:

    Bring in Phelps!

  103. Brian S. says:

    BOOOOOO FOX Business Network.

  104. Nice Scheister says:

Straighten the brim of your hat Ricky. That’s bush league!

  105. Brian S. says:

    Freddy might go 7

  106. DERP says:

Machado is just setting up the Orioles for disappointment in the future.

  107. your mom says:

    4 pitch inning, nice.

  108. RetroRob says:

Really. That’s as sweaty as I’ve seen Sweaty, and he threw four pitches.

    I repeat. More runs.

  109. Get Phelps Up says:

    This game is flying by.

  110. Kramerica Industries says:

    Four pitch inning.

    Well, thanks Jays.

  111. DERP says:

The Orioles broadcast said the same guy caught both of Machado’s home runs.

  112. Mike N says:

Freddy’s checking out RAB between innings!

  113. Kramerica Industries says:

Not that I expected Cole de Vries to do anything tonight, considering he sucks, but still…

7 runs in 1 IP against the putrid Rays offense. Well done.

  114. chilango says:

    Big inning let’s go…

  115. Tom says:

    3 of the last 5 AB’s have been 1 pitch outs…

  116. DERP says:

I wanted to start Machado in Fangraphs: The Game today but he wasn’t an option. I went with Nix instead. ugh

  117. Mike N says:

Is there any way to find out what the historical MLB average is for runs ultimately scored from bases loaded and no outs?

  118. Kramerica Industries says:

You know what this game is missing?

    A 6-3 putout.

  119. Brian S. says:

Someone hit an insurance home run already

  120. RetroRob says:

Well, based on the two last half innings, this game should be over in six minutes.

  121. Tom says:

Ugh…. I know Johnson has hit Garcia well, but he’s under 80 pitches.

  122. Mike N says:

Interesting move to put in Logan.

  123. Mike N says:

It must have been fun to be one of Swisher’s classmates in sixth grade.

  124. RetroRob says:

I think they removed Freddy because they were concerned he might be having a coronary event based on his sweat factor last inning.

  125. DERP says:

So who do we go to after Logan?

  126. Arya says:

Boone for 2/3, Jobber for 1/3, Phelps for 2/3, Rapada for 1/3, Robertson for the close.

  127. your mom says:

    Obligatory Mathis double coming up?

  128. Brian S. says:

Joba has been batting practice since he has come back. Not sure I like bringing him in.

  129. chilango says:

Joba better step up here. He sucked in his last 3 appearances

  130. Brian S. says:

Thank you for not murdering Cano there Ichiro.

  131. Mike N says:

  132. DERP says:

    Batting practice IMO!

  133. jjyank says:

Well at least the velocity concerns from his first outing should be gone.

    • RetroRob says:

Yeah, three straight appearances all 95+. Throwing harder than he has in a few years.

Command still off, but I’d rather have high velocity and weak command than the other way around. The command will return.

  134. Nathan says:

    Crushed it!

  135. Get Phelps Up says:

  136. Mike N says:

    AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HUUUUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  137. Brian S. says:

  138. Kramerica Industries says:

Kenny Singleton has some fantastic timing.

  139. DERP says:

Brian, do you cry yourself to sleep?

    • Brian S. says:

I have already come out and said that Teixeira has won me over this year. But he was the second least clutch player in all of baseball the last two years and was the dictionary definition of a stat padder 2010-2011, which is what originally caused the hate.

  140. chilango says:

    Tex message: We’re insured

  141. Brian S. says:

John Flaherty would know about the “sit and spin” style.

  142. vicki says:

    high leverage much, teix?

  143. RetroRob says:

Remember when an unending amount of posts focused only on what’s wrong with Mark Teixeira?

  144. Tom says:

Tex really needs to consider dropping a bunt down the 3rd base line when leading off an inning late in the game

…..or hit it over the fence

  145. Mike N says:

It looked like Cano said something to the first baseman there, and it didn’t look friendly. ???

  146. Mike N says:

D-Rob is warming up now for the bottom of the 8th. So that must imply Soriano for the 9th, right?

  147. Nathan says:

  148. Get Phelps Up says:

    KeLOLly Johnson

  149. RetroRob says:

    Well there’s something I don’t think I’ve ever seen.

  150. Wow…Sterling called a catch. Please someone tell me what happened?

  151. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    That was awesome.

  152. Brian S. says:

    Off his face!

  153. Kramerica Industries says:

    Right off the noggin.

  154. MartinRanger says:

It’s going as a hit. Must have felt sorry for Kelly.

Come on Ichiro, time for your hit of the day.

  155. jjyank says:

    Johnson just got Rafael Palmero’d!

  156. MartinRanger says:

    That’s more like it!

  157. CUYanks says:

Huge hit! Any chance they could let Joba continue now?

  158. Mike N says:

    This is fucking awesome!!!

  159. your mom says:

    Ichiro, my favorite Nip.

  160. DERP says:

  161. Kramerica Industries says:

    Clutch hit from I-chiro.

That should be the game now. Good job to capitalize on the mishap.

  162. Arya says:

Ichiro is clutch. Now we won’t need Soriano.

  163. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Nice slide.

  164. Nathan says:

    3 RBIs…oh and one hit!

  165. Ichy!!! I have to go to the bus now…this has been such a nice thread though :(

  166. Get Phelps Up says:

    Wow….nice slide by Martin there.

  167. vicki says:

casey mcgehee: bats ninth; eats clean-up.

  168. Tom says:

    Oh hellz yeah!

Joba = 8, Robertson = 9 (unless Joba gets in trouble in the 8th)

  169. The Real Greg says:

Say what you want to about Ichiro, but 9 RBIs in two weeks is not bad.

  170. Betty Lizard says:

    In the back door!

  171. CUYanks says:

Joe Mauer must feel like an Island on the Twins.

  172. chilango says:

Hope we don’t have to use Robbie or Sori. Let’s go Joba.

  173. Brian S. says:

    Granderson in for defense lol

  174. DERP says:

So the guy who caught Machado’s HR balls is a 15 year old who lives in the UAE

  175. CUYanks says:

I endorse Joe Girardi’s management of this game.

  176. Mike N says:

This move makes sense. That was a decent ground ball for Joba, and don’t let him get in all kinds of trouble after pitching well.

  177. Tom says:

So if Granderson came in for McGehee…. why didn’t he have Granderson hit for him?

Can’t stand when Girardi does that.

  178. jjyank says:

Wow real short hook for Joba. I thought he’d be allowed another batter.

    • Mike N says:

I liked the move. Take him out after getting one out and a good ground ball.

      • jjyank says:

I’m not opposed to it. I probably would have left him in to see if he can limit the inning to one base runner, but it worked out and it’s not a big enough deal for me to care.

  179. CUYanks says:

    Now Gose understands stat padding.

  180. Kramerica Industries says:

Gose is playing kinda reckless right now, but that’s probably because DRob isn’t holding him on.

  181. RetroRob says:

I guess that’s okay. I have Gose active on my fantasy teams for steals.

  182. jjyank says:

Jeez that Gose kid is fast.

  183. Brian S. says:

    What the fuck Robertson.

  184. DERP says:

    Brutal David

  185. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Let’s not make this too interesting, mmmK.

  186. Kramerica Industries says:

    Come on.

    No more nonsense.

  187. chilango says:

Now fucking Robbie throws over wtf

  188. Cuso says:

4 run lead and he throws a breaking ball on 3-2 pitch.

  189. TomH says:

Not so sharp lately, since the dl stint, certainly not like last year. And still the walk-itis tendencies. Really not (yet) closer material.

  190. Kramerica Industries says:

    Yeah, that works.

  191. Mike N says:

    Excellent! DP!

  192. Brian S. says:

Swisher wasn’t even on the bag lol

  193. Kramerica Industries says:

    Swish wasn’t on the bag.

    That’s a break.

  194. The Real Greg says:

    We’ll take that exchange

  195. Mike N says:

From the YES-MO, it appears that his toe was on the bag.

  196. your mom says:

Oh look a curveball. I thought DRob had scrapped that pitch.

  197. CUYanks says:

In other news, it looks like the demise of Doc Halladay might have been slightly exaggerated.

  198. Mike N says:

  199. Kramerica Industries says:

Laptop thief throws a complete game.

Wow, how the Tribe have fallen.

  200. CUYanks says:

Jeter just cost us $12.5 MM next year. Not a team player. If only we had a Chad Qualls type to bring in to start the 9th to pick Jeter up.

  201. DERP says:

Another four times on base today for Slade.

  202. xnyles says:

Cone is by far YES best color commentator.

  203. karel capek says:

Imagining Cone reading Fifty Shades of Grey is almost as funny as imagining Micheal Kay reading The Story of O.

    • MartinRanger says:

I actually face-palmed when he mentioned it. And then told my confused father ‘you really don’t want to know.’

  204. jjyank says:

Haha wow the Jays knew Robbie would have the green light.

  205. Mike N says:

Nix took that SO pretty hard.

    • MartinRanger says:

I really really like Nix. He’s a passable shortstop, he’s got some pop, and he can hit lefties. I really hope they keep him around. Nunez has a bit of a higher offensive ceiling but he’s also a catastrophe in the field.

  206. CUYanks says:

Pop quiz: without looking, guess Ken Singleton’s age.

  207. Get Phelps Up says:

Prediction: Jeff Mathis will pitch for the Jays this series.

  208. Mike N says:

Way to stick your arm right out there and block that pitch, Russell!!

  209. your mom says:

Time for an Ichi ban slam!

  210. Betty Lizard says:

    They hit Russell! Those bastards.

  211. Mike N says:

  212. jjyank says:

This game has been very entertaining.

  213. Arya says:

The Ichiro pick up was the best trade Cashman has ever made.

  214. RetroRob says:

An hour and a few minutes ago we were in the 7th inning.

  215. your mom says:

Damn shift. That woulda been 2 more RBIs.

  216. Tom says:

Where’s Chad Qualls when you need him?

  217. RetroRob says:

w?@keithlaw TMI. “@sarahmcox: I’m vaguely terrified that David Cone has read 50 Shade of Grey.”

  218. CUYanks says:

Yeah, do we have a junk reliever?

  219. Mike N says:

    I really like Rapada.

  220. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Yikes Raul

  221. MartinRanger says:

Wow Ibanez has looked unbelievably bad the last two games.

Before the season if you had told me the Yankees regular LF would have been Raul Ibanez I might have cried.

  222. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Is it really necessary to match up for Jeff Mathis with a 7 run lead and 2 outs in the ninth inning?

  223. Mike N says:

Ibanez really is inept in the field.

    • MartinRanger says:

I was really hoping they could burn Voldemort’s glove after Ichiro arrived. But Andruw’s gone in the tank.

  224. DERP says:

    Jenny Dell ?@JennyDellNESN
Bobby Valentine said Will Middlebrooks headed for X-rays (right wrist). Said he was hit “straight on bone and in a lot of pain.” #RedSox

Well at least they kept Youkilis who has filled in admirably for Ortiz at DH, and at first the couple of days AGon went down and the bunch of game Middlebrooks missed earlier.

Oh wait they didn’t want a bench player and decide to pay him to go away to keep Bobby V happy.

Good thing Chavez isn’t in the field. Eppley can pitch with no fear now.

  228. Mike N says:

For fuck’s sake. Please end this now.

  230. your mom says:

Good win. Keep the streak going tomorrow.

  231. jjyank says:

    I’m confused.

  232. jjyank says:

Good game and good thread, boys (and Betty).

    Go Yanks!

  233. Mike N says:

    Adios, fellow Yankee fans!
