Game 114: Sweep the Jays
By
Jayson Nix and Casey McGehee winning games with their bats. Just like they drew it up in Spring Training. (Tom Szczerbowski/Getty)
These last two games have gone about as well as the Yankees could have hoped, and this afternoon they have a chance to wrap up their first three-game sweep of the Blue Jays in Toronto since the very first series of the 2003 season. Yeah, it’s been a while. I blame Roy Halladay for being so good all those years. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
1B Mark Teixeira
DH Robinson Cano
LF Andruw Jones
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Casey McGehee
C Russell Martin
2B Jayson Nix
RHP Phil Hughes
This afternoon’s game is scheduled to start a little after 1pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Shaping up to be a good day of sports. Gold medal game in hoops was entertaining. And now the yanks go for the sweep.
I wouldn’t call it entertaining, exactly. But the result was correct.
where is ichiro? another day off?
He’s terrible against lefties.
Yep. Jones hasn’t been great, but if you’re not going to play him against lefties, his roster spot is useless. I have more faith in Jones than in Ichiro against a lefty.
But TEH ICHIRO!!! He should be leading off against lefties and righties because he’s ICHIRO!!!
/stats mean nothing
He was hired as a really solid defensive outfielder who is not likely to be absolutely horrendous at the plate. So far, so good.
Absolutely, but the day he starts against a lefty, or bats any higher than 7th again is the day it’s a bad trade.
Yeah, if you interpret that turn of events as implying that the Yanks needed a real bat more than a good outfielder when they made the trade.
According to the NY Post, Ichiro will be a pinch runner the rest of the season.
Srsly?
http://www.nypost.com/p/sports.....5J2qCEOQzK
I’d Joel Sherman, and a Post BLOG I wouldn’t take it to seriously.
It’s Joel Sherman* sorry, long night last night, I’m not exactly all there right now. Did you guys know they have $5 32oz draft beers at Fuddruckers?
That is awesome.
Between 3 of those and garlic fries, it was a great night for 20 bucks lol.
I love garlic fries. Unfortunately, beer doesn’t too much more my level of drunkenness, even though I enjoy the taste.
mmmm
Oh I’m not taking it seriously.
He’s saying A-Rod’s return will force Ichiro to the bench. I don’t see the logic in that. Maybe I’m dumb. Ichiro shouldn’t be DH’ing or 3B’ing.
If A-Rod wasn’t coming back in September McGehee or Nix might be out of a job. I didn’t read the article but I don’t understand how his logic would be that Alex (a right handed power hitting corner infielder) returning is going to cost Ichiro (a left handed speedy outfielder) ABs.
No, you’re right. A-Rod and Ichiro don’t have anything to do with each other. A-Rod coming back will take time away from Chavez, McGehee, and Nix, not Ichiro.
He wrote this:
“Because A-Rod’s return from a non-displaced fracture of his left hand in September very possibly will turn Suzuki into the most famous late-inning pinch-runner and defensive specialist in the game.”
*facepalm*
What an idiot. A-Rod coming back won’t have any bearing on where or when Ichiro plays.
Well, he is right that Ichiro is here for his defense, but it’s not just for late innings.
Yes.
What an idiot.
No Ichiro or Eric Chavez, I like the moves since the Yanks have a tough schedule ahead this week.
Yeah, and Girardi needs to make sure that Chavez doesn’t break.
HIs warranty expired on June 1
Sweep would be nice!
I doesn’t matter, this team can’t win in the playoffs.
/weak troll’d
Suzyn…why would the players want a Carrie Underwood signed baseball? I’d like Carrie under my wood, and I’m sure they wouldn’t mind either, but a signed baseball?
I endorse this comment.
Isn’t she dating someone on the Nashville Predators?
I prefer Sarah Underwood
The Jays need a uniform consultant, because the seat of the pants is too transparent, and you can see the blue shirt through it. Or mabye Happ is wearing his lucky pants that are worn thin.
They’re Canadian. It makes sense.
I think Jeter could break Rose’s record by next season if every pitcher in the league was left handed.
Yeah, if only.
Even though Swisher hasnt really produced from the 2 hole, the team has played better with him there.
I attribute this to him letting the other batters see a lot of pitches.
Phil Hughes leaves today’s game with an ERA under 4.00, yes or no?
No, I’m cheating.
You’ll take that if your Hughes
Really…you’re going to give Encarnacion two hittable pitches in the same spot back to back…he’s literally the only guy in the line up you should be careful with.
While he gives up an RBI single to Cooper
He missed with the fastball. Russ wanted it away and that hovered right over the middle.
2 outs, awesome, bro.
C’mon, Hughes!
Cooper and Encarnacion are their 2 legitimate threats in this lineup
What the fuck Hughes? You’ve been great up until your last start, now you can’t beat the line-up that Ivan (who has been garbage) beat handily yesterday?
Oh Suzyn, you silly little minx. Must I tell you again?
If he ever called her a ‘silly little minx’ I would blow up the universe.
This would be an appropriate time for your “Nope button” .gif.
not big enough. Nobody should have to live in the world after that.
Will Flying Balls Phil settle down?
That is the question of the day.
The magic eight ball says “Maybe”.
Nick Swisher is annoying. Nice 110 wRC+ in your contract year.
I assume that winning series is still the goal, right?
A .667 winning percentage is a pretty good goal.
But sweeps are always nice.
So why will people still be angry if we lose today?
Because the Yankees are facing a AAA team?
Dunno about angry, but it’s always disappointing to lose.
this.
Because there will always be angry people no matter what happens.
Naw. Not when Toronto has five rookies in their lineup and a pitcher with a 5 ERA on the mound.
Absolutely, but since that happened already, let’s get greedy!
No, the goal is to win as many games as you can. It doesn’t matter at all if you win 8 out of 12 games by winning 2 out of 3 for 4 consecutive series or by sweeping 2 series and losing the other 2. For a fan, it might feel different psychologically, but other than that there’s no difference.
of course.
Grandy had one good game in Detroit. Still terrible.
That really doesn’t sound very good
damnit Kay
I keep hearing different things. “Swelling” “Stiffness”
ESPN and WFAN said ‘pain’.
Because they make money off of antagonizing Yankee fans.
So…we’ve lost our ace at 2 different parts of the season, a key piece of our rotation for the entire year, our starting left fielder for the year, our third baseman for a chunk of it, one key bullpen arm for a couple weeks, another for most of the season, and our closer for a majority of the season…what’s your excuse again Boston?
Beer and chicken?
Well, what you’re saying would makes sense except for… NOT AT ACE!
Don’t forget our best pitcher by ERA for 8 weeks.
If you mean Pettitte, I absolutely forgot about him.
So…did Seattle injure another one of our pitchers? By being so terrible and having CC throw a complete game?
Cy Young: Felix or Jared Weaver?
Price or Verlander. Weaver shouldn’t even get a top-three vote since he’s thrown ~40 fewer innings than everyone else we’ve mentioned. It’s about quality and quantity.
I think that Weaver may have a chance, because of his 15/1 record. I was gonna mention that his home/away splits are huge, but he still has been better on the road than verlander or price.
Price-Verlander-Felix-Sale-Weaver. That’d be my ballot.
But, I’d love to see HIROK get some love if he puts up a damn good Aug/September.
lol
Why would you have sale above weaver? The biggest negative on weaver is his low innings total, but sale has same number innings. I think that Weaver has been too good in the number of innings not to win, especially with 15 wins and over a month and a half to go.
Kuroda has been good for us, but no way will he get anything more than 1-2 low end cy young votes.
Swisher would have had Encarnacion easily at the plate if he didn’t try to throw the ball while in the air and doing a girly scissor kick in the process
Seriously. He got rid of the ball as soon as he got it. He needed to fucking wind up and let it go.
I’m confused. One one hand I hear “stiffness”, on the other hand, I hear “pain”
Why can’t we have both?
I feel like there’s a thin line between “pain” “swelling” and “stiffness”, and its probably somewhere in between the three for CC.
Damn, thats out at YSIII for Casey
So far, BaBip has been the Yankees biggest enemy
No way. BaBip is mostly luck. Biggest problem on the pitching side has been too many extra base hits given up (Nova, Hughes). On the hitting side, not hitting WRISP.
I think he meant this game specifically.
Damn it. There’s been a few hard hit balls off Happ, and all have found gloves.
Jayson Nix, BASEBALL PLAYER, swings at balls 3 and 4.
Maybe ball 3 but not ball 4. That last pitch was down the middle
Nix is being exactly who Nunez was supposed to be early this year. Play all around the diamond competently and provide a decent bat against LHP. Too bad Nunez would throw the ball into the 12th row from 3B.
Difference is Nunez could hit RHP as well…to bad he had no idea where the ball was going after he let go of it.
Also Nunez is a great base stealer.
Yep, that would’ve been a nice little bonus down the stretch here. But, Nix is doing a pretty good impression of a good utility infielder right now.
Side note: One day I’d like to see an infield of: 1B- Laynce Nix 2B- Scott Hairston 3B Jerry Hairston SS- Jayson Nix.
That is an infield of BASEBALL PLAYERS right there.
2 pitches right down the middle=balls?
I want to see a replay of those two pitches. I wasn’t watching earlier, has the ump not been calling that a strike?
Wow those 2 pitches were strikes. Robots please
Again, you can live with Encarnacion getting those hits. Just don’t let Cooper drive him in.
I’m going to murder Sterling. On that single “Line drive by Encarnation DIVING STOP BY JETER, WHAT A PLAY!!!!!! *pause* sorry I got excited, Jeter didn’t make the play.
Seriously?
You aren’t allowed to complain about Sterling/Waldman on here, remember?
I had to make an exception. This is him making a web gem for Jeter to end the inning then all of a sudden man on 1st.
Wow. Dude needs to get his glasses prescription updated.
Did Suzy try to cover up for him and say that nobody in the ballpark saw it as a single?
Encarnacion is a ML ballplayer that’s why Phil can’t get him out.
And all the other hitters Phil faced during his nice 3 month run were?
Doesn’t count, all those offenses where having off nights, the ones that weren’t where NL teams, and Phil was lucky every other time.
Or, he’s having a monster year and is doing a good impression of a really really good hitter, so most pitchers haven’t been able to get him out. But, yea Phil Hughes sucks.
Easy guys it was a joke. Although I wish Phil would have his 3 month run from Aug to Oct.
Sad thing is, with some of the people around here, this could have easily been serious.
I’m not sure why, but I really find myself looking forward to Phil’s starts now. Can’t completely put my finger on it though.
Troubled former top-prospect, finally got into a nice groove for an extended period of time. I get it, I feel the same way.
I always did have a man-crush on him. Dudes still 26 which is baffling. Hope they find a way to keep him around through his prime.
Most people who followed the farm system even semi-regularly were dreaming on Hughes. I hope he finishes strong, and the Yankees keep him around long term.
Molitor?
I’m guessing Manny Roidmirez in the trivia question.
I doubt it because he wasn’t involved with either the Yankees or the Red Sox.
Blue Jays, correction
I missed the question… care to post it?
A warm thank you to the Hooters manager for putting the Yanks on the big screen.
Get off my team Swisher.
Which hitters do you like on this team? (Serious question, and I don’t remember which players really bug you and which don’t.)
The ones that aren’t assholes.
Specifically?
Luis Sojo
Luis Sojo is the Truest (TM) of True Yankees.
Everyone? I dunno. It seems like everyone is an asshole every time they make an out to Brian.
BaBIP strikes again
Hughes hasn’t been sharp at all today.
You fucking suck Jones.
Extra negative today?
I’d rather watch Ichiro against a lefty than Jones in the field jogging after balls…
Again, we won the series. Let’s go home
And after we lose 3 of 4 to Texas we will only be 3 up on the Rays.
Hahaha please, don’t be optimistic.
And Boston will probably pass us, because according to you they are playing well and starting to turn it around.
Season’s over, even the 2nd wildcard spot couldnt salvage this season.
No Boston is pretty terrible but they seem to do well against us in YS3.
Oh relax.
Doubt it because they are facing King Felix on one of those days
That’s the one they will lose.
Greg, the results of the specific past two days are irrelevant except for the psychological effect on fans. Not caring about the result of the last game of a series after you’ve won is not something any professional team should do, and if they did, that would be truly terrible.
Once again, stellar hustle by Andruw.
He’s such a great outfielder.
Andruw Jones couldn’t cut that off?
Gose was the guy to strikeout. The kid is barely a major leaguer right now.
Dammit Hughes!
Yankees, Blue Jays, and Red Sox (and even Rays) have suffered a ton of injuries. Of course, a lot of those Toronto injuries are to marginal players. I’d like to see some sort of study on how much WAR was on the DL based on games missed. (and maybe using WAR/game from last year?)
No, impossible because only other teams can use injuries as excuses. The Yankees and their 600 Million dollar payroll shouldn’t ever complain about injuries.
Ok sarcasm aside, I think a study like that would be interesting for sure.
Longoria would be a huge chunk for Rays. Pedroia/Ortiz missed a bunch of games for the Red Sox, and Ellsbury would contribute a lot. Depending how you view Carl Crawford, he’d also be something for them. ARod/CC/Rivera/PIneda would probably not be as much as them. Blue Jays I have no idea– obviously Bautista is crushing.
Pedroia and Ellsbury are terrible this year. Crawford sucks too.
Crawfords track record shouldnt be tossed out because of one season.
He sucks this year too.
Injury plagued year
This guy is well-informed.
Pedroia and Ellsbury have <100 wRC+. Crawford has 100 on the nose. They suck.
Crawford has < 100 AB. Ellsbury < 150 AB. It's hard to make great judgments on those types of samples.
For the Jays, you would think Bautista and Morrow would be a decent chunk, along with Santos and other bullpen guys.
Yes. If Bautista/Lawrie miss most of the remaining games, they will probably make a charge at the Red Sox in terms of this. Longoria missed 85 games, though I can’t think of other huge injuries on the Rays.
Hughes struggling mightily against the Jays AAA lineup.
God, I love Coney
Me too. Smart, snarky, sabremetrically savvy and a sexy voice.
That’s a shame.
crap!
Rajai “Cabrera” Davis
Just take the 2 of 3 and move along.
Phil’s pitching BP today.
Please get some runs off of J.A. Koufax.
What does the binder say in this situation?
Never good when a Rajai Davis hit is scoring guys like Jeff Mathis and Anthony Gose.
I want Hughes on my playoff roster.
Based on this series, the SB totals for Anthony Gose and Rajai Davis should be thrown out along with the steroids era.
I’m actually not surprised Hughes struggled against this lineup. What do minor leaguers hit all the time? Fastballs. What does Phil Hughes throw?
Fastballs.
It makes perfect sense.
Nova’s just taken the lead back for #4 starter. If Phelps performs well for CC we should see him replace either Phil or Nova in the rotation. Freddy’s been solid so he’s safe.
I think it is fair to say the Phil Hughes experiment is done. This is what he is. He will not improve to the wunderkind that he was mislabeled as being. Trade Hume sor serviceable parts or move him to the pen. Either way a decision needs tobemade before 2013 season begins.
Trade David Hume!
Phil in the pen is a scary thought man
lol. I forgot the last three months mean nothing.
If the last three months is your basis then every hitter who gets hot will be a .300 power hitter, Kuroda would have been DFA’d, Yankees win streak wouldnt have been followed by equal losing streak. Seriously dude, 3 months of good versus regressing back to his career numbers, laughall you want. This is what Hughes is and will be.
I’m not saying he is a bad pitcher but he is league average at best as a starter. If he at least ate up innings you could make an argument for him as a starter. You can’t take 5 good starts and call it success. Take Jeter. Since the DL last year he has sustained his overall performance. If Phil was doin the same then it is easy to call the last two starts a road bump.
Gah!
Getting a sweep in Toronto was probably too much to ask for.
Oh well. Get home and take charge against a good Texas Rangers team.
This strike zone sucks
Happ should not be dominating the Yankees. That’s the worst part of this game.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
And the requisite home run.
Six of the seven runs allowed, with two outs. The runs that kill you.
I hate two-out runs when the other team scores them.
Well, hope you guys are ready for the D-Lowe show tomorrow, because Phelps is gonna need to soak some innings up today. Unless they just kill Igarashi’s arm.
No. Hughes is going to keep going
Igarashi it’ll be.
BUT, since Phelps isnt stretched out, Lowe is almost definitely going to be in the game tomorrow, unless Phelps can get through 5 or 6 innings with like 60 pitches.
The old Phil is back!!!
Hughes has got to take one for the team here. Phelps cant go because he’s starting tomorrow.
Phil is a 4 letter word today.
Who is our long man today?
How bout Swisher!!
Girardi said Phelps would be available today and then they could figure out what to do tomorrow (Lowe, obviously). I’d assume Igarashi can go two or maybe even 3.
a nice day at work for the Jays’ AAA-team
Well that escalated quickly. That is it, get ready for the Rangers
That really got out of hand. There were men on fire, and I stabbed a man in the heart with a trident.
+1
That is awesome. Cannot wait to see part two.
Hughes sucks. This is hilarious. He got destroyed by a minor league lineup.
OH NO GREG THE RED SOX ARE WINNING!!!!!!!!! They MEDIA WILL BE EXCITED!!!!!
Tell Brian S. that. He’s the one who’s on the ledge.
Right.
The Rays are winning.
The Rays are the new Red Sox.
yup, he just sucks. At least we had a chance down by three or four. Stuck with him way to long.
Encarnacion should get buzzed for that shit. Seemed like he just stared down Hughes after he hit that.
Manny Machado another HR.
SLG% padding.
Get Iggy up.
Everybody calm down. Hughes got beat up. Leave it at that.
Everybody calm down. Hughes got beat up. Leave it at that.
It’s best if I don’t watch this game as my equanimity — particularly toward Phil Hughes — needs a lot more development.
Cano taking 3 pitches? Maybe the game isn’t over!
By the way, the Rays don’t scare me outside of their protective dome.
JA Happ can get shelled quickly too, but to overcome this TOR lead is asking for too much if Hughes takes the mound again.
And Cano scores, oh right he decided taking the walk was a bad idea.
FALLACY
3 observations. this ump is horrible. his stirke zone is a joke.
andruw jones cannot play the field especially on astro truf the guy cannot move.
cano will never be great. his last AB is all you need to see. swung at ball 4 2 times and then grounded out.
yanks no shows today. disgraceful………….
A-Rods fault.
Fifth highest WAR among position players since 2010 = not a great player.
Nevermind, I used a made up stat. I should have quoted his RBI totals.
The thing I love about Cano is that even his traditional stats (BA, RBI, etc) are great, so people resort to him being “lazy”, and abstract stuff like that to knock him.
http://www.baseball-reference......g_standard
Never great, eh?
Cano is one of the best players in all of baseball.
“cano will never be great.”
lol wut?
The media is going to have a field day with this. Our season is over.
I’m interested to see Igarashi pitch. He has that “hitchy” delivery, like Kuroda. Is it just a coincidence, or something they teach in Japan?
So if this team is so bad, how come they have so many wins?
We don’t need any white knights here.
I don’t follow.
Wins don’t mean anything. Don’t you know that by now?
In all seriousness, when a team performs like the Yankees have for 15 or so years, it breeds spoiled fans. Fans that don’t understand its a 162 game season. Even the best teams are gonna lose 60 games. We’re spoiled, so we expect them to go 162-0.
LOL. People voted for Machado after like 2 games.
That was huge to get the runner in there.
Curtis is making me sad
I will not shed a tear if Granderson and Cano move on so the Yankees can stay under 189 million. Because if it’s one thing I care about as a fan it’s the absurd payroll. #sarcasm.
I don’t want Granderson extended because he’s old. Nothing to do with the payroll. Not smart to give 33 year olds longish contracts.
Yeah, it’s not that I don’t think he’s worth a good amount of money, its just that he’ll be overpriced and too long of a contract.
Phil is getting crushed by a triple-A lineup while the offense is getting dominated by a triple-A pitcher
You are a dumbass. J.A. Happ is not a AAA pitcher.
Eh, he didnt exactly set the world on fire in the NL Central.
He played for a shit team. That make a difference.
If you pay attention to W-L, yeah. (I don’t)
He sucks this year though
Happ has an 81 ERA+ this season and 71 ERA+ last season. Also, you are a fucking moron.
ERA+
He’s better than Nova, then that means. Right?
I can give you a bunch of numbers that prove that since last season, J.A. Happ does not belong in a major league rotation.
I don’t give a shit. He pitched in the World Series. He deserves some respect.
I think he deserves some respect for far different reasons than “He pitched in the World Series”.
That’s dumb as hell.
Like I said, a fucking moron.
You must be joking if you think this is an indicator of quality.
Happ isn’t a AAA pitcher.
They should still hit him, but he’s major-league quality.
Why did they take out Hughes?
To avoid destroying his confidence, maybe. And to have an excuse to destroy Igarashi’s expendable arm.
Because he was horrible, and they don’t want to just hang him out there to get knocked around further?
You all become like Jets fans when the Yankees lose. Its ridiculous. I thought there would be more realism here.
And one more thing. In sports, don’t EXPECT anything. It will make your life easier.
Greg, stfu, you’re so dramatic.
Igarashi is Igaterrible.
Mike Moustakas is such a stud.
Maybe they should demote Hughes to AAA for a couple of starts so he can work on his change-up (like Nova with his slider last year). It might work wonders for him. And call up Warren to take his next start since they’re on the same turn.
Calm down. Just kidding.
Phil has had enough time to mature as a pitcher. He has proved he can’t control the fastball and half the time his curve doesn’t break. Time to let him go.
And your plan of doing so?
I don’t know about that. But whatever the results, hitters still take very aggressive swings against him (esp righties). And his arsenal of pitches has dwindled down to two again; the cutter/slider came and went; the change-up got lost somewhere too. It’s hard to be a good starter with 2 pitches. The FB isn’t consistently plus, and his curve is more slurve-like now. He has better command than Nova, but that’s not saying much. However, I like Nova’s stuff and repertoire better. Nova needs much better command; Phil needs better command along with another legit pitch.
Igarashi looks pretty dodgy so far.
This is gonna get ugly… Like Swisher pitching-ugly.
You called it.
It is going to be so awesome when the Red Sox go into Camden and sweep the Orioles.
That would be cool!
I wonder what Schneider’s Grill’ems are?
BTW, one of my buddies who lives in Toronto is at the game today with his three sons, so at least they must be happy and having a grand old time.
We have no choice but to trade for Barry Zito and re-up him for the same contract he initially got with the Giants.
Next week the Rays are going on the west coast away from their dome playing Seattle and the Angels so they aren’t going to light the world on fire out there.
Orioles play Boston, Detroit, and Texas in a row.
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is no movement cumulative in the division next week.
No other AL East teams scare me (in terms of catching up to the Yankees).
Making up 6 games of ground is tough to do, especially with only a month and a half left in the season. There’s a reason the Yankees are this far ahead, they have been (and I believe, are) a much better team than the rest of the AL East.
Then tell the others on here please.
The “others” all seem to be brain-dead, or over hysterical fans.
Yeah, though with 2 teams sitting 6 games back, the multiple comparisons up the chances that at least one catches the Yankees.
TB could easily catch up.
“Easily”? If the Yankees play .500 ball the rest of the way, they’re 92-72. To go 92-72, TB needs to go 31-20. I mean, I guess that’s achievable, but who of us really thinks the Yankees will only play .500 ball the rest of the way?
When we get rid of Iggy after the game, who do we bring up?
Derek Lowe
Swing and a miss on my part. For some reason I thought he was already on the roster.
Lowe’s gonna replace him on the roster, and maybe even on the 40-man.
Ryota IgaLOLshi.
We got ‘em right where we want ‘em.
Rothschild to Igarashi: “Please try to suck less.”
Rajai “Pujols” Davis
If his club option is declined I wouldn’t mind picking him up as a fourth outfielder. We need some more speed.
Eh… I’ll pass.
Over/under how many more meaningless bases Rajai Davis steals in this game?
This game will impact our run differential enough to make all those 1-run loses seem fair.
So mets release him and they have the worst bullpen in the league. I hate how Cashman loves to gives trash from other teams chance after chance before any of our prospects.
Who would you like to see in this spot? Remember, Igarashi was only up to pitch in this situation, so you’re risking burning out a prospect for one appearance, shipping him up to Toronto for one day, and possibly messing with his head by letting him get rocked.
Who ya got?
I’d rather have Iggy pitching in this situation than an actual prospect.
He’s not here to have a “chance”. He’s here to suck, but eventually get outs, in garbage time.
That’s what I call the law of averages evening out. 10 runs in their last 5 games; 10 runs today.
Ichiro
reply fail
Can’t wait to see the re-dux of Swish on the mound. Actually, maybe not swish since hes been injured this year.
Nix? Stew? Who’s it gonna be?
Congrats, Axisa just stole your comment for a tweet.
Wasnt a theft job. Was just great minds thinking alike.
Ichiro!
Is there an MLB rule that disallows a team to just forfeit when they are down so far and don’t want to burn through pitchers? Or is it just so grossly unsportsmanlike, that no team would ever do so?
Assuming that it’s really really unsportsmanlike. And you gotta remember, this is an entertainment industry. People who paid to be at the game would be PISSED (as would I).
The equivalent is having igarashi pitch.
We are about to lose like five wins from out Pythagorean record. I assume that is what everyone is bitching about.
Until Pythagorean record is used to determine playoff positioning, it’s not very important.
It does seem to predict accurately the probability of winning (winning pct). Didn’t a researcher derive the formula (in 2006?)using the Weibull Distribution to get the best Pythagorean exponents?
THERE’S NO MATH IN BASEBALL NERD!!!!
/sarcasm
Schneider’s Grill’ems are apparently pre-cooked sausages that you just heat up and eat. Sounds disgusting.
Stat padder
JEET!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously pitchers are to blame when they suck, but did Martin call a slider when the dude is throwing 94-96. Even when one is right down the middle the probability of davis gettign a hit is lower than a lame slider (it has to be a lame slider since the guy is stuck in the Minors). It just doesnt make sense, just not smart…Mr Martin.
your absolutely right . 4 straight splitters. Stupid !
The one time I’m stuck listening to those clowns on the radio, and they’re bashing “that sabermetric nonsense.” I should just turn it off completely.
What they say?
Something like “the best measure of Jeter’s greatness is that he’s been in the playoffs 16 out of 17 years, and that he’s the Captain. You can forget all that sabermetric nonsense.”
God, they should be fired.
He looks like a baseball player.
He’s the Captain for fuck’s sake lol
BOBINSON
Those 3 runs last inning were a shame.
That’s hindsight.
Yeah. It’s easier for me to comment on the past than the future.
Nonetheless, they were unfortunate.
CANO WILL NEVER BE GREAT
CANO SUCKS!!!!!!! GET RID OF HIM!!!!!!!!!!!
If Igarashi hadn’t give up the three runs the inning prior, I think Joe would have pinch hit for Jones there. Pure conjecture.
because we all know if you subtract a few HRs Jones positively does suck !
In other news, the Royals and the Twins are playing the O’s and Rays tough, so far.
Orioles losing
So are the Rays.
Cano will never be great that is true. the guy gave up a walk previous AB because he wanted to hit a homer.
the guy has 68 rbi’ shitting 4th on the yanks, you want a parade for him???? He is a good player with Jeters mind for the game would be off the charts…
Stat padder foolish fans cannot process the fact that Cano is a er ygood player who with more discipline at the plate can be a generational star which is not happening. BTW the guy is 29 alreads………
:: stands up and claps ::
So he’s an A- player instead of an A+, so the Yanks should let him walk?
That’s like saying “If Jeter had more power he’d be the best player ever” (with more spelling errors)
He doesn’t have the best discipline on the team, no. But, he is the best 2B in the game, and plays like it every day.
Have MLB figured out yet how they are going to handle continuous interleague play next season?
Did Igawa change his name and got a plastic surgery? Cause it sure looks like he is pitching
Huge inning by Ryoto there
Yanks will bring tieing run to the plate in this game.
Hey, that’s my schtick.
No you usually say tying run. I said tieing. It’s nuanced, I know.
Heh.
Holy Fuck that was insane. Holy fucking shit.
lol
My goodness that was Trout-esque.
Wow! What a catch!
WOW What a catch
If it was a closer game, we wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate that play. We’d be cussing him out
Yeah, but I’d still say that’s one of the best catches I’ve ever seen. My goodness that was insane.
No way. That was a great catch.
Also, a closer game means the play means more.
I would have said: Great catch. FUCK.
Yeah now it’s just kinda. Great catch. Fuck (no caps)
I was both cursing him out and appreciating the amazing catch.
Get a run in Nix.
Thank you.
Your welcome.
NIX!!!!!!!!!
Keep the line moving
How the fuck was that a strike?
And the Yankees score the two runs anyway
I’m glad we decided to use Ryota Igarashi.
You’re approaching hindsight and fallacy territory
I LOVE TWO-OUT RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!! When the Yanks score them.
Look at all this garbage time stat-padding!
Girardi should kill himself after watching this.
Obviously the only response.
Seriously, this is a really dumb thing to say. For a variety of reasons, the first of many being that it is pretty insensitive.
It’s hyperbole.
It’s still dumb. Very very dumb.
HINDSIGHT, FALLACY, AND CLASSLESSNESS
I give absolutely zero fucks.
SWISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the Yankees might have to go to a better pitcher for the bottom of the 7th.
It’s a ball game again! Their bullpen is terrible… a full comeback isn’t impossible here.
Hey it’s a ballgame. Who do we bring in for the 7th?
Still Eppley I think, mix and match with Rapada/Joba/Logan too.
The fallacies coming these radio boneheads are worse than I have ever heard. This is completely ridiculous.
“What if Sabathia didn’t go on the DL, then David Phelps wouldn’t be starting tomorrow, which means he would have come in to pitch instead of Igarashi, which means those three runs would never have scored, which means the Yankees would have just tied the score.”
I’m seriously not even making this up.
It’s the butterfly effect!
If the Germans never bombed Pearl Harbor
the plot thickens !
YCPB!
Swisher is fricken slow.
not too slow to score there
Here comes the Robbie Thompson complaints
Kay called Darren Oliver Arthur Rhodes hahahahaha.
WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????? SEND HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HR CANO PLEASE
Swish should have scored fuck
Go-ahead run up!
Bean one of them now.
Hit Encarnacion in the hands.
Eh, not a fan of starting beanball wars. Although Encarnacion stared down Hughes after his bomb.
That HBP was obvious. Bean Encarnacion or one of their prospects.
I mean, obvious to you I guess. Putting the tying run on base so your LOOGY can face a righty instead of a lefty doesn’t seem obvious to me. But what do I know
Bad luck. But we’re giving it a shot
Jones has been useless lately.
Should have sent Swisher, WTF,
I don’t think he would have made it. The ball got into the infield just as Swisher was rounding 3rd.
You can’t send him home there with Cano coming up as the tying run.
How the fuck do you not send Swisher there with two outs!?!?!?!? Make them make the goddamn throw and tag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cano was coming up as the tying run. Gotta let him swing the bat there.
It was pretty predictable that Cano was getting absolutely nothing to hit in that situation with Jones on deck.
If Rajai Davis wouldn’t have made that catch, Gomes would have touched third and run off the field with only 2 outs, and all the other runs would have scored to allow the Yankees to take the lead!
This is going to be another 1 run lose isn’t it?
I stand by what I said, Jones sucks !
Jones hit it hard, they just had him played perfectly. It’s not on him. More like Swisher who is slow as shit. He should have scored on the previous play
The head of this site disagrees on Swisher
Swish wasn’t exactly flying. He’s pretty damn slow, and he seems slower since the hip injury. I think he would’ve been out by a good 15 feet.
What the fuck?! I had a string of customers from like 2 on…what happened?
Just be happy they made it interesting. Still expect the loss.
You think this is Jeter’s dead cat bounce season or that he will do this again next year?
I think he’ll regress a bit, but his 315/360/415 line looks really good this year. Jeter’s proved a bunch of people wrong in his career, so I guess he can keep doing it.
Are you related to Aaron Guile With A Smile?
No relation, but apparently we both love those smiles.
We should somehow trade for JJ Hardy this offseason to be the utility infielder/starter when someone gets hurt.
Loss? Do you see the momentum right now? This is game 2 against the Sox all over again!
Why are we letting our ROOOGY face Johnson?
We’re down in the late innings, after taking the first two games of the series…You know Joe loves waving the white flag in these situations.
Where are the LOOGYS?
Why is Eppley still in there
It’s pretty cool that the Royals have no interest in winning.
Nice job by Eppley
I think we’re all missing something great. Kay called Darren Oliver Arthur Rhodes. Not the same black LOOGY, Kay.
Seriously…somebody fill me in as to what happened from like the top of the 4th on?
Hughes blew up a bit, some extra base hits and such. Igarashi gave up 3 runs in mop up duty too. Yanks were down 10-1 at one point.
Yanks scored a couple runs off Happ. Jeter HR.
Mcghee had a HR robbed by Davis (one of the best plays of the year). Yanks had a run of XBHs off Lincoln, to make it 10-7.
Cool, thank’s. Hopefully we can finish the comeback.
It would be amazing, especially since 3 innings ago the season was over.
lolz
Granderson is bad
I concur!
Encanacion comes up net inning. Get Joba in there?
Grandy has looked like shit for weeks
but he hits lefties !
Yeah, he’s looked lost for a while now. Hopefully he can turn it around for the stretch run.
pivotal play: Swish not scoring in the 7th,
Mike Axisa disagrees
Pivotal play: Girardi putting in Igarashi.
HINDSIGHT AND FALLACY
NOBODY CARES
When you go against the laws of logic, you will lose everytime
Like I’m going to take logic lessons from a racist.
That joke ship sailed days ago, man.
Naw
Way to battle there
You expect way too much.
No need to be pissed. They gave it a shot
anoher tease coming. close but no cigar.. they have not come back after 8 all season.
woulda coulda shoulda.. always coming up short.
nice ab by grandy against oliver why does he not just dive and try to hit a ball 2 feet out of the strike zone???
odds of coming back in the 9th are about 10%……..
And it doesn’t matter a bit.
the typical they gave it a shot crowd. 0 for the season after trailing going into the 9th. not 1 comeback but plenty of stat padding…….
I don’t give a shit. I expect nothing from this team. I don’t think they’re going to win the World Series. So in the end, it means nothing
I agree. They’re out in the first round of the postseason. Like last year. No pitching.
I’m glad you know this as fact. Any other definite events happening in the future? How are the Giants going to do this season, who will make the world series from the AL then? Who will win the WS? Who will win the World Series MVP? I need to know these things, because I plan on betting on all of them.
Just my opinion. They do not have the pitching to go deep in the playoffs…IMHO.
Who does in that case?
I forgot Sabathia and Pettitte retired.
Died actually. There’s no chance of them coming back at all.
I won’t say that for sure because the postseason is a true crapshoot.
I just don’t expect them to win the series in general.
They lead MLB in come from behind wins.
What the fuck is “stat padding”? Are you implying that individual Yanks are making decisions on the field that increase their chances of improving their personal stats at the expense of reducing the chances of winning the game?
Because if that’s what you mean, then you are delusional.
I just want to double check. We’re in 1st in the division by 5+ games, and we won the series, right?
NOT A PLAYOFF TEAM!!11!!1!!
igarashi was the right move. the guy is a career AAAA. throws 95 and no other pith. but cannot get the ball in the strike zone enough….
the rajai davis d play was huge would have been within 3 with no outs..
imagine andruw slow as molasses on that play. the guy moves like casey mcgehee……..
jones cannot play the field………
DON’T. GIVE. A. SHIT.
I thought you were using big boy grammar now stuart?
Hit him in the dick Eppley.
Quit pussing out! Do it!!!
I’d much rather they get him out.
Do it, RAPADA!
Get him out, not hit him in the dick. Not that it matters now.
Fuck you Eppley.
O/U 60 runs scored in the upcoming four game set?
Under. The Over would mean both teams average 7.5 runs a game. I believe that Kuroda is pitching on Tuesday, so I doubt that’s going to happen.
LOOGY fail.
No cookie for him!
Joba no fuckin around lets see the 97 with some movement. NOW
It is more important for Joba to do well here than to win this game.
I disagree
Not one fastball. Strange.
Good job!
Bet Chavez will pinch hit for Nix against the Fugitive.
Ichiro? Why not Chavez?
I thought about that. Probably the speed factor.
You don’t need speed in a three-run game. You need baserunners.
His run is meaningless unless you get more on behind him, much higher odds of Chavez getting on base…stupid move.
Ichiro over Chavez? Dumb.
Also it could be because Girardi doesn’t want Chavez to run on this turf.
Yeah, that was weird not to pinch hit there.
Is Chavez even available? I think he said he needed a few days off
via lohud
Toronto Bills top Giants in a close one 10-7
In the end, it doesn’t matter
In hindsight
YCPB
Bummer. But the partial comeback was exciting.
shocker another tease.
lucky arthur rhodes pitched for the jays just ask michael kay!!!the guy has arthur rhodes on the brain…
what a shock they went down like shoop in the 9th…
shocker another tease.
lucky arthur rhodes pitched for the jays just ask michael kay!!!the guy has arthur rhodes on the brain…
what a shock they went down like sheep in the 9th…
Granderson’s at-bat to lead off the 8th was an embarrassment. He is terrible. David Phelps should hit for him.
hughes 2nd horrible effort in a row. joining Nova as 2 enigmas’s who are hittable…..
8th and 9th inning the yanks did zilch….
another non comeback tease……….the script has not changed all year……..
… for that horrible team in first place. How do you stand it?
You are one stupid motherfucker
does Joba know he throws 96???
6 off speed pitched in a row, got out of it but what the F
Perhaps you should stick to shuffleboard.
It might shock a lot of people but when your starter gives up seven or more runs,it usually means you won’t win.
The Angels showed that last night,as have most teams in the AL and NL this year.
