The Yankees further buried the Red Sox with last night’s win, but more importantly they gained a game on the Orioles and maintained their lead on the Rays. With eleven wins in their last 16 games (.688 winning percentage), the Bombers are pretty much right back on the pace they set from the start of the first Oakland trip through the start of the second (33-13, .717). A win this afternoon knocks the magic number down to just 37. Here is the starting lineup…

I still love from last time these teams got together, Pedroia made an out on a ball he hit decently to left (like last night) and they had him coming back into the dug out with a microphone fixed on him as well and caught him, with no bleeping “fuckin A.” T’was priceless.

I’m listening on the radio, so I seriously have no idea, but in a race between Tex, Ibanez, and Jones, I think Tex comes in last by a decent amount.

Do you think maybe the increased dominance of pitching has been aided by improved and ridiculously effective defensive shifts and positioning.
I think defense is the biggest reason pitching has been dominant since 2010. The Yankees aren’t a good defensive ballclub but they are much improved over what they used to be and it’s cut around half a run of ERA off our pitching staff. I wonder what Wang could have done 2006-2008 with a defense that wasn’t among the worst of all time.
Phelps looks good. Gonzalez hut a good pitch so hats off to him. We should be able to get more than 2 off Lester.

The walk to Grandy was strategic by Lester. He’d rather not risk pitching to a guy with 30HRS and pitch to a guy hitting .198 who’s a double play machine. Martin hits just enough not to be a waste at the plate but boy is he horrible the other 95% of the time.

I love that Nick and Tex are 1-2 in all time homers from each side of the plate, but lets be real alot of that has to do with starters used to go much further back in the day, and bullpens where a place for failed pitchers.

Well it was 80ish last time, so I’d have to think it’s at least 90 if not 90-100.

He’s at 50 right now, so he could easily go a couple more if things don’t unravel.

The Yankees did not recognize Jeter as passing Nap Lajoie in hits the other day, which is kind of stunning. Nap is one of greatest righthanded hitters ever, and one of the most significant players in AL history.
Any time I’ve seen Lajoie’s name on a hit total shown by YES, they have Lajoie at 3252, not 3242. I have not been able to find out why. Maybe that’s what Elias has him at? Because every other source I’ve found has him at 3242.
