Game 137: Two Straight
ByI never thought September games at Camden Yards could be so important. The Yankees and Orioles are separated by just one game atop the AL East, so these four games could go a long way towards determining the eventual AL East champion. That said, Joe Girardi & Co. can’t worry about winning three of four or anything like that right now. The Yankees haven’t won consecutive games since winning three straight over the Rangers at home roughly three weeks ago, so just focus on tonight’s game. Here’s the lineup…
SS Derek Jeter
1B Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
DH Alex Rodriguez
3B Eric Chavez
CF Curtis Granderson
C Russell Martin
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Ichiro Suzuki
RHP David Phelps
Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:05pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

This lineup actually seems respectable compared to the last few that have been run out there. Hopefully they have the same results as they did last night
Let’s go Phelpsie! You can do it, put your swag into it!!!
3 years ago this lineup is Murderer’s Row. Now it’s get murdered row.
Well, 2009 Eric Chavez had a -39 wRC+, Granderson’s was 102 (below this year’s 112), Martin’s was 86. I’m with you on Ichiro, Ibanez, and Arod, though.
It’s worth pointing out that but for 2 very fortunate errors (JJ Hardy and Eliot Johnson), the Yankees would have been swept in both of their past two series.
The Yankees have given away enough games of late, it all evens out.
Not necessarily. Those allowed the would-be winning runs to score, but the Yankees still would have been tied in both of those games.
Yankees’ aggressiveness on the basepaths made it happen. They need to do more of it…pressure the defense.
Is the game delayed?
Cal Ripken ceremony.
http://www.bbsradio.com/userfi.....igsFly.jpg
What kinda ceremony is going on, the “Don’t Disrespect Flanny-mony?” let’s get on with it already!
Though I do appreciate humor and it’s a relatively relevant meme, I have to wonder if maybe we should be a little more sensitive over a guy who committed suicide. Can’t we just direct our ridicule at Buck or Mark Reynolds or something?
It really is disrespectful to Flanny.
Seconded. People seem to forget that the guy was a real living breathing person.
It was funny when it was relevant but now it has just become disrespectful.
Yeah, it really was a tragic situation. It’s one thing to make fun of Buck and his whining, but I think at this point we can leave him out of it.
Look at that sea of orange…whoa!
Horacio Sanz! LOL!
Are there more Yankee fans than Os fans there
Are they disguised in orange shirts?
it’s not Orioles fans, it’s an orange shirt flash mob.
So they’re Yankees fans?
Thank you Cal Ripken ceremony, got to finish a 3rd episode of The Newsroom on my friend’s HBO Go account and didn’t miss a second of the game. Very happy about that.
I’m naming my next son Rolando. There’s just not enough Rolandos out there.
Time to put the O’s in their place.
Wow, this line up, at least for the first 6 or 7 batters actually looks like a legitimate major league line up.
i wanna see this team destroyed – send those all of a sudden O’s fans back home to get ready for football
RAB + Gameday…. not the best way to learn physics.
Swisher still lost.
Please don’t shit the bed again David.
pastadiving cano?
dontchaknow
wait, he dove and it worked? genius!
look at that… he dove for the ball and got it!
Cano learned to dive!
Lazy ass
So Robbie Cano can dive
I fucking hate, and will continue to hate when JJ Hardy beats us in anyway.
Same can be said for Nate McLouth.
And Ciriaco.
I’d say anyone on the Orioles beating the Yankees sucks. They are suppose to be the doormat of the AL East.
You misunderstand me. If we were to be beaten by Markakis, Jones, Weiters, ect. I’d tip my cap, but allowing guys like Hardy and Mclouth to beat you is bullshit.
Mcclouth and Hardy are just too good.
Phelps doesn’t look too good
Phelps looks awful already.. if not for a great play on D he would have given up 3 straight hits.
Phelps has had a rough first inning in, what, his last 3 starts?
Double play please
And here we go…again.
That 2nd pitch to hardy was a strike mike winters can suck it.
It’s Nate Mclouth, argh. Come on Phelps put on your big boy pants.
This is what Orioles fan look like. I didn’t recognize him based on the last decade of terrible crowds. #bandwagon
This is going to be a high scoring game.
for one team at least.
FUCK MLB.TV!!
This kid is great.
Holy Crap Phelps…
Settle the fuck down Phelps.
Obvious balk is obvious.
this is pathetic..
Phelps is not in a good place
My god this team!!!!!!!!!
uhoh
You gotta be kidding me Phelps.
Phelps is just not ready for the big stage. Too many mistakes.
Get the bullpen up
:’(
game over. good night folks
Fucking awful.
CHRIST
And it’s all over. Thanks a lot Phelps you bum.
Thanks for showing up phelps
Wow.
Way to shit the fucking bed, Phelps. In the first goddamn inning, no less.
Phelps shit tonight too.
Get him the fuck out now please.
And try to get 8 and 2/3rds out of a bullpen in the first game of a four game set?
Why are all those ‘Yankees fans’ cheering so loudly?
and people still think they can win the division with no reliable starters.. fuck you phelps
Just tank every game, Get a good draft pick. Don’t trade it for Michael Pineda.
Thanks for showing up, David.
Too much pressure for the kid. Damn.
Loving the 2 strike fastballs away though. Call something else damn.
Wow, you gotta be kidding me.
Not sure if David Phelps… or Ivan Nova
hahahahha. That was easy. I assume the Orioles parade is tomorrow.
Ibanez should have to that
Holy shit.
Throw one at him. Make thing interesting
Jesus! Climb the frickin wall!!!!!
Ok so who is longman tonight
Nova will be back in 7-10 games.
This team is going to tear up the Fall League.
There is something particularly insufferable about these sketchy Orioles “fans.”
Inauspicious? Downright bad.
Okay, just let Phelps eat as many innings as possible. Even if he gives up 10 runs. Fuck it.
this is such a fucking joke.
How about blowing another 0-2 count
Well now the question is can the Yankees get four?
Hits, I mean.
Derek Lowe could have give us this shit
Suzyn’s calling for Derek Lowe to have started tonight…she does realize he has been awful right?
She is stuck in the 2004 time machine that apparently Cashman used when he traded for Ichiro and Lowe.
Restock the farm, forget this season. Maybe the next. Even if they make the ALDS they’ll get swept.
I thought Daryl Rasner was gone?
i feel like boston from last year…………… gonna cut my wrist now
Throw in an 0-2 to walk PA.
The Yankees didn’t have enough of those against the Rays.
Winfield would have caught that.
Duh. Winfield caught everything.
How about we get joba to hit there stars and hurt them for the series
This is kind of the dilemma the Yankees face. Its very hard to develop young players and compete at the same time.
It’s only hard when they don’t fucking give it a chance to work out. Austin Jackson strikes out too much? Fuck that guy.
Yeah, I’m sure you would have been very patient with him striking out 180 times and hitting four homers as a rookie.
For no money, though.
Like that matters to fans.
As a rookie in that lineup in 2010? Sure, I could have lived with it. If I recall, Granderson had his share of struggles in 2010. What is a big deal is Granderson striking out 200 times and completely going in the tank this year.
There was no chance the Yankees were going to use an outfield where two of three were Jackson and Gardner. Gardner was going back to Triple-A.
Erm, Jackson was going back to Triple-A.
And why don’t they give it a chance? Because the fans expecting to win every year. You said they should just blow the season. That’s blasphemy to a Yankee fan.
It’s specially hard to develop pitchers that are not good to begin with. And the farm system can produce crappy pitchers like no other.
Well the Royals have had better picks and they’ve done just as worse.
oh good, Derek Lowe.
Hooray. Let’s throw jet fuel on an already terrible fire!!!!
great farm system.. one great player after another coming up huge for the Yankees.
Where have these “fans” been the past 10 years? Shit…lemme dust off the O’s hat and put up the Yanks one, it’s gonna be a long fall.
Welcome back to the rotation, Ivan.
Well, I’m in no mood to sit in front of this, so……yea.
Especially after reading a few comments. Jeez, everyone’s ready to slit their wrists.
May as well see what Warren can do.
It’s the same shit over and over 0-2, 1-2 the Yankees either miss by a ridiculous amount where it’s an easy take or the pitch is too good.
He had Jones 0-2 and then threw 2 pitches that were ridiculously easy takes.
Reynolds 0-2 and again the next 2 pitches are easy takes.
Do any of the Yankee pitches not name Kuroda or CC know how to miss out of the zone (without missing by a 1 foot or two?)
If this was CC, everyone would be calling him a ‘warrior’.
After he got out of the inning and went on to throw a shut out for the next 8IP.
He’s a warrior no matter what he does.
I wish he’d get his fat ass in shape.
I bet his fat ass is more in shape than you on your couch.
Don’t waste your time.
I’m not on my couch, but I guarantee I’m in better shape than him. Everyone here probably is.
You’re so angry that he doesn’t respect his job enough to get in shape that you’re attacking a regular person non-athelete as if they should be in game-ready shape.
You’re perspective on life is garbage.
Has CC ever given up 4 runs in 1/3 of the first.
Every other team fighting for a playoff spot did something to get better for the stretch drive. Cashman got Ichiro, Lowe, and crap. Hate this team
Have you looked at the players moved at the deadline and how they played so far? Pretty much they have all sucked. You want Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence for Ryan Dempster’s 4.4 ERA for top prospects?
Prospects all suck.
So we should trade them for terrible players! Great logic!
Yeah, who were they to get?
The Yankes WILL win this game, they’ve scored four runs plus in the first and still lost, the O’s can do it too!
I mean I’m an optimist when it comes to the Yankees, but this is a little over the top even for me.
I like your positivity. It is good. We need more positive posts like that.
….but they’ve already lost this game.
” In my thoughts, I use the technique of positive visualization.”
-Christopher Moltisanti
I love that clip. It’s GLORIOUS!! Like Blue.
Seems to me, again I know I’m way wrong, but it seems like the Yankees pitching stuff has been worse since Rothschild and Martin got here.
The only remaining members from the pre-Rothschild era are CC, Hughes, and Mariano, no?
Hughes is the only one still pitching.
Really? I thought he(Island) was here in 2009?
This may or may not be true, but I doubt they are telling Phelps / giving Phelps a target over the middle of the plate
in 2009 the Yankees Staff had a 4+ ERA. This year they have a 3.8 ERA. Yeah they got worse after he got here totally, except for the facts part.
Oh right ERA is the be all end all stat. Thanks. Shut it STD.
Increases in K/9 7.82 to 8.13 3.97 FIP in 2012 to the 4.32 FIP in 2009. Are you always this fucken stupid?
Under Eiland CC showed a huge decline in strike out from his career norms. Under Rothschild CC has improved his k/9 lowered his BB/9. His FIP and xFIP has been better now than it had in his first 2 years.
You have to bring nova back now
Alright let’s get a few back
All we need is Darrell Rasner and this could be my least favorite Yankee team of my lifetime.
For those killing the Orioles fans, I guess none of you went to or saw Yankee games on TV in the 80s / early 90s.
Even mid-90′s (though the strike played a big part of that)
Orioles average so far this year: 24,921
Yankees average attendance 1995: 23,521
1996: 27,789
True, to a degree. Baltimore has historically had attendance issues with the exception of the first few years at Camden. Check out their crowds in the glory years (’69-’73).
Where are all those guys that were ready to proclaim Phelps as our 2/3 pitcher a few months ago?
+10000000000000000000
Q: “At what point do we re-evaluate his ceiling?”
A: “When he has sustained success.”
Applies to 2012 Phelps and 2011 Nova.
It’s clearly obvious that he’s going to be an above average pitcher going forward. I forget who was trying to convince me that Phelps would be more valuable than Choo and shouldn’t even be in the conversation in trading for him. Saying that he knew he would out preform his scouting report based on 60IP.
Longman in the bullpen are like backup QB’s, a few good stretches in relief and everyone wants them to start… until they actually start and people realize why they were not starting in the first place.
I like Phelps and he’s fine as a spot starter, but he’s not exactly a top prospect or a guy with a big ceiling.
I hope he proves me wrong, but I think he’s going to be exactly what the scouts projected – a back end of the rotation guy.
Again 1-2 and the high fastball that is not even close enough to tempt the batter… and Martin congratulates him on this? (He did the same thing against Adam Jones)
While it’s good to change eye levels, if it so far out of the zone where it’s an easy take, I’m not sure it does all that much.
where is Sergio Mitre when you need him.
BTM Test. And the survey says….
Over/under 9.5 pitches this inning?
my bad…12 pitches. Thank god I waited to go for a smoke. I would’ve missed the entire inning.
Rothschild was brought in on the premise that he was going to “fix” A.J.
So why is he still here?
1st inning was annoying, but for some reason i feel like the yanks are gonna get this game
http://www.baseball-almanac.co.....9607110BAL
Guess the Yankees will have to try and go about this one another way. It was worth a shot.
4 batters up, 4 groundouts in 12 pitches. Offense is still pathetic.
We’re not even 2 innings in. Fans like you are pathetic.
Yankees will win tonight
Believe it
It will happen
-Micheal Strahan
Is anyone else’s MLB.tv looping back to previously shown footage as though it’s live and randomly going to commercial breaks in the middle of an inning? Started on PS3, went to iPad then 360 and it’s doing it on all three systems. Very annoying.
Not enough weak grounders off Yankee bats.
Well, can always count on Kurtis for a change of pace.
Man, I was really convinced Phelps would make a better starter than Nova. Granted, he hasn’t started too many games yet… but none of his starts thus far have been promising.
How much more blood can we squeeze from Chavez and Ibanez? Any?
For all the good Brian Cashman has done the last few years, he has had a horrible year.
Pineda-Montero (I personally understand the move, but for now, it flopped)
Kontos-Stewart
Lack of help at the trade deadline.
Kontos for Stewart was so bad. I’d put my hatred for Cervelli aside for a decent bullpen arm at this point of the season.
you’re forgetting my personal favorite, anything more than a bag of balls for somebody worse than people already on the roster (Warren for Ichiro when we already had Dewayne Wise and Chris Dickerson on the roster.)
Hiroki? Chavez? You’re seriously citing Kontos and his often low-leverage sample of <40 innings in the NL West?
Not just me.
Axisa and others hated the move too.
I’m not calling it a great move. I’m calling it a minor move compared to some of the others he’s made this year.
Common sense hated it.
Everyone knows Chris Stewart sucks.
I wonder if Obama will accept the nomination tonight. Or if he’ll just go on stage and make poop noises with his mouth.
He should talk about NDAA and extending the Patriot Act. Think he will???
Man Grandy is in a funk
Mesh network hard to listen too.
Granderson got hit on the head and when he woke up someone told him he was 2011 Adam Dunn
I am still hoping that this summer he finds out there was something wrong with his eyes and he corrects it – holding out hope that it just can’t be Dave Kingman 2012.
Meant “this winter”
6 batters up, 5 groundouts 1K in 22 pitches. Offense is beyond pathetic.
2 FUCKEN INNINGS…holy shit.
Go out to walk the dog and come back to a 4 run deficit. Sounds about right.
Bottom of the first: out, single, single, balk, single, homer, walk, out, out
Top of the second: dribbler, ground out, K
I was fine not knowing how that happened, but thanks. Props for doing that from a radio broadcast though. A Sterling and Waldman one no less.
Thanks, it’s easier to follow when things are actually happening because they stay on task better. When the pitcher starts wandering around the mound and there’s visits to the mound and calls to the bullpen, that’s when they really get off on bad tangents, that then continue while the game resumes.
My theory is that the Yankees got the 10 game lead and then took their foot off the petal and now can’t get restarted. Complacency driven by the stats and the media.
Complacency and Injuries.
Media reference number one. Everybody drink!
Waaa! Victims!
Can’t discriminate.
Will the Yankees win?
Maybe if they score some runs.
Can’t predict baseball.
Wonder if Phelps starts in Boston on Wednesday (after Kuroda starts on Tuesday) – they could skip Phelps and go straight to Hughes, CC, Garcia and then insert Nova in Tampa Bay series when fifth spot comes around again – of course, Nova wasn’t pitching well when he got hurt but at least he is an alternative.
This assumes Garcia does not suck even worse – hard to pull 2 starters from rotation.
Kuroda and CC really have to step up – not sure we will get much more from Hughes and his 90 mph fastball for rest of season.
Harrumph.
Phelps has nothing right now. His outs are hard hit.
Zen Troll back to wish everyone a jolly, joyful, jaunty, and jovial evening! I hear that Phelps has had some trouble thus far . . . NO WORRIES! The Yankees will win. I have no doubt about it. Positive thoughts and happy cocks will paint the world with 28!
David Phelps is clearly overthrowing.
I’m not even a mechanics expert, but it looks like he’s flying open before he releases the ball.
The beer is awful but that Heineken commercial is pretty good
TOO BAD BASEBALL GAMES END AFTER 2 INNING
~ YANKEES FANS
Why do you have to exaggerate what other people say in order to make yourself look smart?
Just be a person and be real, miss.
So you’re allowed to be overly negative and i’m not allowed to have some fun with that?
Matt Wieters is a mean looking dude.
He sort of looks like the Sedin twins w that crappy beard
Better take a good look then, since we’re not likely to see the Sedin twins or any of their colleagues for a nice, long time to come.
So how did Hammel go from terrible to ace like this year? He nearly doubled his K/9 from last year.
Getting out of Colorado will help you with that.
Yea but double your strike outs from a weak hitting NL west to a better Al east is just weird.
One aspect is missing a ton of time so you don’t have a chance to regress after you get off to a hot start.
Got the hell out of Colorado for starters.
The Rockies are as bad as it gets with pitching. They would turn Justin Verlander into a #3.
Good point. Gotta love that 4 man hybrid rotation plan next year.
I applaud them for trying something out of the box, but I’m pretty sure this was a terrible idea from the get-go.
Leave it to Russell to put together the first AB of the game.
Nice AB russel
kind of hilarious that Martin is by far our best hitter right now.
.204 YES!!!!!
Solid AB by Martin… he’s been swinging better of late.
It’ll stop at some point. He’s gone through about five of these week-long hot streaks that make you think he’s figuring it out. He’s been better in the second half, but sheesh.
Never underestimate the Canucks. They are resilient mother-clubbers! Martin is the spark that the Yankees have been waiting for. TO THE PROMISED LAND THEY GO!
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t.....QTxOwpJMXA
Yeah, Raul! Eat that! You’re relegated to “protecting” Russell til you hit better.
so there.
ugh
wow.
lol
How many innings did Phelps have last year? Could this be a problem?
Oh man – that was bad luck
Damns. Ripped it
That’s just lovely.
This series is off to a swimming start.
I can only laugh.
Russel Martin is the harbinger of #28. The Canadian will lead this sorry band of veteran kooks over the hill, through the trenches, and into the Canyon of Heroes! Believe in 28 and 28 will believe in you! GOOO YANKEES! The fight has only just begun!
And Ichiro just filled his one-hit-per-game-quota on a two-out meaningless worm-burner
ooh…maybe not meaningless?
(….don’t trick yourself, Cuso)
You’d have been happier if he didn’t get a hit at all?
No, it was fine. I don’t like tricking myself into investing emotionally in a rally that doesn’t happen.
It’s just a sign of the times for the moment.
Before responding, please note the ‘for the moment’ qualifier.
damn, Ichiro used up his one hit of the series with two out and none on.
The Yankees will be eating up 2-out runs for breakfast by the time this game is over! LET’S GO YANKEES!
If the Yankees put AB’s together the rest of the game like they have this inning I think they have a decent chance at coming back.
Well at least we’re making solid contact now. Baby Steps.
This inning might a good sign. Some good contact. We shouldn’t forget that Hammel is returning from a LONG DL stint and could start to crumble at any time.
Everyone else has sucked but at least it has been fun watching the Captain this year. Just shows up every day and gets hits every day.
Strike out some more, Swish.
wow Swisher fucking sucks right now. sit down scrub.
i swear the number 2 hole must be cursed by Nick Johnson or something.
Wow…Swish is just LOST right now. Like John Locke levels of Lost.
He’s Amelia Earhart lost. But worry not! Swisher will return with a vengeance . . . and PIE!
True Swisher is back
Swisher has shown up every day too…and strikes out every day…
/curtisgranderson’d
NICK SWISHER IS A PIECE OF SHIT
Swisher is trying to hard to save us some money.
Yanks put together some good AB s there. If phelps can keep settled down they can pounce all over hammels
Yes 4 hard hit balls in a roll. Probably would have scored a run had Ibanez not smoked a ball right at someone.
yeah, probably. I mean, not even this inept offense could get 4 hits in a row and now score a run.
Swisher the most unclutch pile on in garbage time player ever…but he is a fun lovin guy so there that.
Weren’t saying that a few weeks ago were you?
One benefit of this inning: doubled Hamel’s pitch count. I mean he has to be on some limited pitch count after such a long DL stint, no?
with Randy Wolf looming in the pen they probably have a better shot off Hammel.
what is our outfield’s triple slash the last 10 or so games? I’m guessing like .150/.185/.280
Maghee and pierce can play 1st too. Swisher needs to sit.
I’m sure you were also calling for Phelps to start over Garcia/Hughes/Nova a month and a half ago too.
I really think girardi needs to try to lead off with ichiro and bat jeter second. put that scrub swisher in the bottom third.
Ichiro is more of a scrub than Swisher
Girardi should bat Ichiro tenth, not leadoff. That’s insanity. He’s terrible. One of the very worst regulars in baseball since the start of last year.
They should “accidentally” forget him on their flight home.
Put the only guy who has hit consistently almost all season, behind one of the team’s worst hitters.
That’s…brilliant.
Thank god, live look in while John and Suzyn have Ripken in the booth I might actually find out what happens for a bit this inning.
Swish needs some laughers so he gets some garbage time.
Weiters: .240/.320/.419 overall triple slash, coming into today against the Yankees .396/.475/.623, so even higher now.
Fun with small samples.
That’s not uncommon at all. Reynolds is having the same type of stretch.
Some players play well against certain teams
I remember when we played the Orioles early in the season and Weiters was destroying us I thought he was a sure fire allstar, then when I read his stat line in the series preview last week I was amazed.
Him and Ciriaco can have a competition for the most annoying below average hitter.
Well I seriously doubt Matt Wieters is a below average hitter for a catcher.
He isn’t, but in just a hitting sense he’s slightly below average
That’s an insult to Weiters.
Ciriaco is a minor league player, at best. Weiters, being just an average offensive player, carries immense value as a catcher. We’d kill for Weiters to be in the lineup over Martin.
And I believe Matt Wieters is a defensive wizard at catcher.
If all it takes to get Weiters in a Yankee uniform is to kill a man, who do I have to kill. I’m not saying I’ve killed for less…but..
fuck yea Robbie. take that asshole out.
Welcome back to the big leagues, Hammel.
Not that I wish ill on anyone, but still…
Suzyn just informed me, breaking news: Cal Ripken was a baseball player. Who knew?
He was no Jason Nix.
*Y
Swisher is squeezing the bat like he does post-season. I’m not sure about post season Ichiro(if they get there) – I guess if you can’t hit, you can’t hit.
I really like Kenny. I loved when he did games w/Bobby Murcer but I hate when he does the Oriole games.
I’m not a Ripken fan – I’ll stop there.
I restatemy prediction now that these games are pressure filled like playoff games swisher will choke. Idiot cashman could have had Carlos Beltran for the money he spent onjones a md swisher
If he played for the yanks his arm would of exploded and he’d be out for 2 years
So many pitchers hit this year – seems like more than usual. I mentioned it yesterday.
That must have clipped him pretty good if it got all the way to the outfield after hit off his elbow.
If he’s going to stay in the game, light him up like the fucking fireworks.
Yesss…
Be stubbornnn….
I can feeeel your anger! Strike me down with it and take your place at the right hand of your fatherrrr.
Yesss…
Be stubbornnn….
I can feeeel your anger! Strike me down with it and take your place at the right hand of your fatherrrr.
Hammels is staying in. Wow.
hooray for small ball, moving the runner over.
The hell is A-Rod swinging at that crap first pitch for?
You just know Girardi would have pulled him and then rested him for a week
Ooh – Mark Sanchez’s woman on stage @ DNC. Thank G-d 4 Eli
How’d that go last night?
I think they started 0-2 5 years ago — Super Bowl.
Last year lost the first game – Super Bowl.
Need I say more?
I think the Jets are going to be bad this year.
But still they beat the Cowboys in the home opener last year.
I’m not very concerned with the Giants regular season record. Just be good enough to get in the playoffs, I don’t care who you beat, or who you lose to. That’s when the Giants have been great when they’ve gone to, and won their last two Super bowls.
And I rooted for the Giants both times.
Rex makes it impossible for me to root for the Jets now.
Don’t listen to him. It’s all in the sense of motivating his team.
He still about as likable as Bobby Valentine.
Rex is funny and can be self critical. Bobby is just morose.
Dude, get back to me when your offense scores a touchdown.
We did score a TD.
2
I guess she’s trying hard to not get Mark deported.
Oh, you just took a line drive right off of your pitching elbow? Let me just swing at the first pitch for you…
hit him on the elbow with a line drive, he gets better. Orioles magic.
That’s one run.
Mazel Tov
it’s impossible to score when you have awful AB’s like this one by Chavez. He took a fastball middle of the plate for a strike, swung at a FB out of the plate, fouled off a hanging breaking ball and struck out on a pitch that bounced in the dirt. Pathetic.
But we scored one anyways.
Russ remembered he’s Russ again
Two strike outs after taking a liner off the elbow.
You really can’t make that up.
So what does it mean?
Orioles magic!
Here comes THE PAIN!!!
I don’t think anything is as irritating as the gameday notification for a strikeout. how many times am I going to see that tonight. god.
They scored 6 runs on 15 strike outs last night…maybe it’s a good sign?
Doubt it. We got lucky on that error at home plate.
it seems like no hitter can lay off that breaking ball in the dirt.. I miss the days the Yankees had hitters with good eye at the plate
big member has been thinking bout 2014 free agents bcause as it looks like right now, offseason will come sooner then usualy. i have reaearceched and analised the free agents bats of this offseason and have cum up with the following:
C: AJ Perzinksi. One of the grittiest players in the game. he does everything to make sure that his team wins. he aint no joe the slow, he will make sure we retaliate when our guys get hit. he will block the plate with his body and aint gonna take no shit from anyone
DH: Matsui. When was the yankees the champions last time? 2009. who was the mvp? This guy. he is a truer yankee than anyone on the roster not named derik. not to mention that he will be surounded by his good friends ichiro and kuroda
CF: Tory Hunter. normally i hate men with lesbian names but i will make an exception for mr.hunter. why? becasue this man has wn more gold gloves than you have ingers on yor hands. he will become a good hommies with granderson and maybe he will teach him a thng or 2 about the game of basebal.
RF: Josh Hamliton. I already explained it prevusly. but to remind everyone, his performance will be naturaly enhaced by the freedom of drinking in new york. i mean his biggest flaw is sitting on the bench and only being in 120 games per year but he cant play when he is under withdrawal or in detox so if he is drunk 24/7 we wont have an issue.
Solid Gold.
I enjoyed the bit about Hamilton, otherwise I still think you’ve lost it.
Wow that ball carried…
A-Rod no leg kick at all.
A little toe tap and leg twist.
wow Phelps is giving Grandy a good work out.
I know that they don’t count for runs, but it would behoove Phelps to stop giving up warning track shots.
Too late
In fairness, it wasn’t a “warning track” shot.
are you fucking kidding me? get him out of this game.
It all falls down
Might want to take him out.
He’s getting hit very hard.
Goddamit Phelps..you are making it easy for them. Get Lowe up.
And that’s why.
David Phelps is gonna make Hughes jealous with his penchant for home runs.
It takes a fucking struggle to score a single run and this little motherfucker gives it all right back. I rather have lowe pitching, he is not this bad.
Yes he is.
He’s much worse.
Lowe is this bad, but still it’s worth a shot. Maybe he’ll have a good day. Phelps clearly isn’t.
Granderson playing deep; only took a couple of years to figure out Granderson doesn’t go back on the ball well.
Yeah you’ll give up a few extra singles but that’s one, possibly 2 extra base hits if he’s shallow (the first flyball might still have been caught.
Gotta love the shutdown innings. Go Yankees pitching.
Robert Fucking Andino? Wow Phelpsy. I want to root for you, but you’ve made it incredibly difficult.
Third time a charm for the Os. Balls are getting smoked.
yep. still pitiful. this team’s going nowhere.
Get him the hell out of there.
Lowe sucks, but you can’t do worse than this horse shit from Phelps tonight.
Girardi to Phelps: It would be nice if you stop giving up fucking homeruns. Stop hanging out with Phil Hughes.
Lowe and Rapada up for the second act of the farce.
Now that these games are pressure filled like playoff games swisher will choke. Idiot cashman could have had Carlos Beltran for the money he spent on swisher and jones. Please don’t resign swisher
We should have overpaid for a guy with health problems and has almost same OPS as nick swisher.
If you post the same thing repeatedly, does Beltran magically become a Yankee?
…I could be dead wrong, but I’m pretty sure all Nick Swisher has cost us is Wilson Betimit?
Beltran last 14 days: 116/191/116
He’s doing very well under pressure.
How’s stuart?
Just got home…looked at the score, shook my head.
So…looks like David “Don’t Call Me Michael” Phelps is having a rough night huh?
Seems like he either can’t find the plate or is just throwing it down the middle.
It’s a deflating feeling when the Yankees are trailing when you finally turn the game on, eh?
Story of, like, the last 5-10 times I’ve been in those shoes.
No kidding.
Makes me want to just change the channel.
At least they are hitting the ball hard of Hammels.
Wow, It’s official. Sterling’s dry humps have become more annoying than my girlfriend’s freshman year of high school.
Michael Kay was just as bad man.
I was about to type that.
Ichiro mashing.
Getting some good AB against Hammels.
MASN announcers are fools.
“the guys up the middle were heading to the dugout after that 3-2 pitch”
Sounds nice and colorful… ecept that there was 1 out. Even if it was a strike; did they change the rules to 2 outs per inning?
Not a strike.
According to Game Day that was right down the middle, maybe on the outside half of the plate. What was Jeter complaining about?
I’m almost in awe of how badly the Yankees are playing now. It’s unreal. I know they’re hurt, but they should still be at least OKAY. Almost the entire lineup AND the rotation are slumping. I know we’re not putting our best quality players out there, but even most of them aren’t THIS bad.
It’s insane.
The way Swish is swinging the bat he should be taking 3-1
keyhole this pitch Swisher – take anything offspeed
now would be a good time Robbie….
What’s up with black patent leather belts on some of the yanks? Can get to the club quicker after the game?
nothing but fastballs up in the zone… I wonder how many of those can they fail to put in play.
Ughh… two fastballs down the middle. Got to think curve in the dirt
And there it is (though not quite in the dirt)
Swisher actually laid off an off speed pitch
wow great at bat Robbie. way to step up.
I’ve never had such a complete sense of futlity about the Yankees before. At times I’ve felt that our chances were very bleak, but never before was I so SURE we wouldn’t score (or win).
This is happening regularly.
They went 9-17 to finish 2010, which felt atrocious. I think this probably feels different due to the collapse, and the very real possibility of missing the playoffs.
I remember that, but I would remember and admit if I felt as bad then. I didn’t.
Hell, I didn’t even feel as bad as this in 08′. You’re right, it’s the collapse that really does it.
Oh come on Cano. You’re making staurt a looks smart.
Hammel takes a fucken liner off the elbow, and the Yankees have barely done anything about it.
This team…wow…
Well it hasn’t affected his pitching in anyway…
You can practically script each inning the Yanks are up to bad. Amazing.
bat*
Same thing.
heh. sad but true
How many strikeouts tonight have come on swinging and missing at a pitch that bounces in the dirt?? Ridiculous.
The Yankees will bring the tying run on base this game. Also, Nate McLouth is a very strange looking guy.
Robbie…why? He ALWAYS swings at that pitch, disgusting.
you just gotta pitch around Mclouth with a LOOGY, he’s too good.
LOOGY comes in to get Lefty immediately goes 3-0.
Why the hell does Girardi have a lefty specialitst against a .213 hitter with Adam Jones on deck?
You burn one of your lefty specialists to get out Nate McClouth in the 5th inning?
Melky got busted on the 15th of Aug., I think.
Robbie was batting .311 with 25 homers and 68 RBIs,on that date.
He then”had a stiff neck” and was out for a few days.
Those 2 are so tight – how much did it affect him? What can they do about it? I don’t know-
well Cano probably can’t reach his butt on his own so….
Yeah, Cano losing his lineup protection due to injuries and slumps have nothing to do with it.
Is this a give up?
No.. the Yankees have no competent righties in the pen except So/Ro
The options are Warren, Lowe, Joba, Eppley. At this point that’s a pick’em I think.
When was the last time one of our starters had a quality start? The Rangers series?
I know CC went 7 ip, 3 er on Monday.
Oh yeah that’s right.
Kuroda’s had a couple since then I think
Yes. Aug 19 and 25. Indians and Sox. Just seems like we haven’t had a decent start since the Rangers series.
We haven’t had a decent start combined with decent hitting.
I’m going to say that A-Rod pops out.
And that’s why I’m still watching. Because I am often (normally) wrong.
Why is Chavez hitting?
Joe wants his bat still in there against the righties at the back end of the Orioles pen, I suppose.
So he gives up an AB now for POSSIBLY an AB later?
It’s just damnd stupidity. Guy on 1st no out, get another guy on and who knows.
I agree with you.
Girardi serving the lefties up to slaughter. Won’t pinch hit for Chavez down 4 with a guy on.
But down 5, noone on…. well that’s when you get a righty bat in.
But well let’s let Ichiro bat against a lefty with a man on…
Idiot. Apparently you only pinch hit with the base empty to increase the leverage?
smfh
Again, I ask – where is McGehee – he’s hit Wolf, he plays 3rd – not as well as Chavez but clearly “Joe knows” doesn’t like him.
Fuck this, you will not catch lightening in a bottle twice with this scrub
UNBELIEVABLE. His fucking ERA is over 5!
We fucking suck.
I miss the Eric Chavez could hit the ball with any kind of decency.
Good thing we didn’t McGhee. God forbid he hits against a lefty.
Hahahahahah. This is past comical at this point.
And we laugh to keep from crying.
fucking Girardi. idiot.
Acceptance needs to start to come from the fans.
Acceptance leads to complacency. Acceptance of mediocre play by the fans will lead to acceptance of it from front office, which leads to us becoming The Twins. No thank you. I will continue to demand excellence.
Just for this month. Expect excellence next year because it’s not happening this year. No matter what you think, it;s not happening this year.
You can’t know that, and I can’t know that. I will continue to expect above average play from the Yankees, specifically Jeter, Swisher, Rodriguez, Cano, Sabathia, Kuroda, Robertson, and Soriano. If that’s not enough to at least carry us to the post season, were anything can happen, then so be it.
Chavez needs more magic dust.
Girardi knows he could have pinch hit for Chavez right? He’s zoned out right now. His ass needs to go.
Replacement?
Anybody who realizes Ibanez and Chavez haven’t hit lefties in years.
I actually like Terry Francona over Girardi. He got thrown under the bus last year.
Francona allowed beer and chicken in the clubhouse and an even worse collapse.
He also led his team back from a 3-0 deficit to win a world series and a 3-1 deficit to win ANOTHER WS. Even in his collapse they won 90 games (as awesome as that collapse was).
I like Francona. I wan Girardi back whatever happens but if he’s out I’m all in for Francona.
Francona was a good manager that got screwed over by his team I don’t think Girardi is a good manager at all.
I thought Joe has always done a great job of putting bullpens together, this year nowithstanding. I also normally like that he tries to make matchups, but he’s kind of gone crazy with it.
He also had future HOF pitchers in 04 to help him out with that one and a darn good pitching staff in 07 as well.
We don’t have that luxury.
No. Hence me saying I want Joe back.
I’m really glad the Yankees brought their A game in the biggest game of the season.
You know, they’ve had, like, three or four of those against the Orioles, and they’ve played like shit in every game. Just makes the whole evening better.
THEY”RE NOT GOING TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES.
JobaWockzee accepted it. I accept it.
Not if we don’t make the play offs…but once in everyone will have a chance.
Greg said they’re not going to win the world series, so fans should all rejoice as the Yankees play like shit.
I’m not saying rejoice. I’m saying accept it just for this year and move on to next year.
They still have a chance to get to the playoffs.
They still have a chance to advance if they get to the playoffs.
They still have a chance to win the World Series if they advance in the playoffs.
Real fans care about how their teams play and don’t give up on the season until it’s over, even if they don’t expect winning.
If you don’t care to act like a real fan, fine, that’s your prerogative.
Just don’t go around telling real fans how to act.
I could have jumped ship all those years the Yankees failed to win in the mid-aughts.
I’m a Jets fan, for gods sakes.
I just accept it because in the scheme of life, this team means very little. If I think that way, then i won’t become a sobbing mess like I used to be.
Like I said, if you choose not to care passionately about your team, fine, that’s your prerogative.
Just don’t tell real fans not to care.
Man up and accept that, you know, what? We CAN have hope and we MIGHT have our hearts broken. So what? You don’t need to give up on the season because you’re too scared of failure.
Stop asking all of us to have your attitude. I’m not going to get it, and I’m glad.
What an obnoxious thing to write. You’re basically telling everyone here to stop caring completely.
Not completely but a lot less.
That’s not how baseball fandom works.
You know what? No.
I’m not going to accept that.
WE DON’T KNOW THAT.
We won’t know until they either win or are eliminated.
Just accept it and stop pretending that you don’t care because you’re afraid of failure.
Guess what? I still think they’ll win the division. I might be WRONG. It’s not the end of the world. I’ll man up and accept it.
Stop being afraid all the time of being wrong.
I, like most of us, am a total masochist. I still watch the Yankees every night, knowing at some point, they’re going to have that one shitty inning that loses them the game. I fucked up my right hand so much the other night that I can barely do anything without writhing in pain.
I don’t care if they aren’t going to win the World Series. I’m going to watch this team until there are no more games for them to play. And then I’ll thank the good Lord for the off-season so that I can get my much needed break from this team. Especially of late, it’s a goddamn ordeal watching them. A punishment whose only alternative is a lengthy prison sentence.
Glad to see you have taken matters into your own hands….ROFL
Sports causes people to do crazy things.
Offense struggling badly. 6th inning. Already down 4 runs.
Don’t give yourself a chance to take advantage of a leadoff walk by pinch hitting somebody who has a chance against a lefty.
Thanks Joe.
Saving Chavez for the possibility of him batting against a righty later in the game.
Clearly that’s the smart call.
He has like 14 people who can play 3rd now. If a righty does come up late against a righty (like McGehee or Nunez or NIx), he could pinch hit Dickerson and put yet another 3rd baseman in the field)
It’s just mind numbingly stupid… there was at least a hint of an excuse before expanded rosters, but this saving the bat for later crap holds no water with expanded rosters.
basically last night was the dead cat bounce from the Yankees.. they still suck and will blow the division
Joba Hughes.
Joba Phelps.
Lol
Alright it seems like a lot of you want Girardi or Cashman fired.
List your replacements please.
Don mattingly…o wait we passed on him for clueless joe
Tito and Oppenheimer
Agaiin, you want a manager who led an even worse collapse and allowed unruly clubhouse behavior.
at least he won’t be complacent. Girardi is sitting back and watching Ibanez and Chavez hit against lefties while Rome is burning.
I cant imagine Hal firing either of them. Cashman still has 2 years left on his contract right?? Girardi only 1 though so I could see him getting fired but again I cant see Hal or Cashman firing him.
I would have no problem whatsoever with Francona taking over for Girardi although it would be ironic firing Girardi for managing this collapse then replacing him with Tito who was fired because of his team’s collapse last year.
As much as I wanted Donnie I don’t think either of them should have gotten the job. They needed someone older, more established, and someone that didn’t play with any of them. How about Willie Randolph if he learned to deal w/media?
For GM – well, how about Lou – no, not Louie – they have the ex-Cubbie GM there but maybe Kevin Towers-
As much as I don’t know, I’m more afraid the young elephants otherwise known as Hal & Hank don’t know. And things are going to change – they’ll still spend money but they will have a budget but never doubt there are some really smart people out there.
Willie Randolph is a good candidate I think. He got a raw deal from the Mets that the Mets are still paying for.
…and the requisite Mark Reynolds home run.
my god. they give up a HR every other inning to the O’s. fucking losers.
I’m wrong McGehee only faced him once (though that seems amazing) and didn’t get a hit but he does have some power and man we need some power — we need some energy!
I’m literally falling down laughing. They are so fucking bad, it IS funny.
Not like the O’s and rays are running out world beater lineups, difference is their scrubs are getting huge hits and walks off the yanks.
haha fuck us
Heartless, Gutless, and Spineless….R.I.P.
What was that Cashman said? We have what we need on this team to win?
Really?
You know, I get it – we’re spoiled after all these years but this is still shocking and they may win the East yet.
Given that – there need to be changes. Maybe Gary Tuck comes back – he only left because Girardi made him his bench coach in Miami and wound up in Boston — and is miserable. Rob Thomson needs to go — too many times he panicked and didn’t wend the guy on 3rd because of the few times the guys were called out. There will be changes even if they’re not the ones some want.
Fuck Matt Wieters, fuck Mark Reynolds, fuck Joba, fuck Swisher, fuck this whole thing.
Sorry, I know this isn’t warranted at all, I don’t like being negative but this is just driving me nuts. They need something, whether it’s a great start, or a big hit, or a Girardi ejection, or a better team meeting, or a fight, or a great at bat, or an Ichiro profanity laced tirade, they just need something to wake the team up. I don’t mind going down, but I hate going down without a fight, and I know it’s easy to say that, but god damn LETS GET GOING BOYS!
C’mon now…
This collapse falls squarely on our heads. I love that Mark Reynolds turns into an All-Star caliber hitter when he sees the Yankees in the opposite dugout. We’ve got two teams on the field headed in opposite directions. One came to play; the other came to lose.
All this lineup is missing is Teixeira but i’ve seen the Yankees overcome his absence. The extended poor play of every single regular and bench player on this team not named Derek Jeter led to this situation.
The Yankees are the embarrassment of NY.
When the Jets, Mets and Knicks move out of NY?
Seriously. The Mets, at least, still exist. I mean, even if we lose, we’re in first place.
Out of the right handed bats we have, Joe uses the one that has shown no ability to hit lefties this season.
Andruw finally figured out a way to get on base
At the end of this series, Showalter is going to send Girardi a gift basket.
PH for Ichiro, then put Dickerson in RF.
Girardi = fucking moron.
No pinch hitter for Ichiro? The hell.
The sad part is, if he had gotten out of the way of that pitch it would have been a clled strike.
Seriously, how many more double plays is this team going to hit into? This is Murphy’s law type shit right now.
baseball gods punishing Girardi for leaving in lefties to face Wolf.
So not only does Girardi use his worst right handed bat, not pinch hit for Chavez…he lets Ichiro hit against a lefty. It’s official our Manager has given up.
They could not be more inept if they tried. Maddening.
Predictable. Go 2013.
Thank you.
WE”RE NOT WINNING THE WORLD SERIES IN 2013
The odds are against it, but you never know
Acceptance
- The Real “not a real fan” Greg
Well if we win the next 3, all is forgiven.
And this is why out of everyone in the FO and staff, i think Girardi should be the one to go. He has no fucken clue what he’s doing. He mix and matches with pitchers but doesn’t do it when it comes to the offense. Fuck him.
I can’t believe I want McGehee and Nunez – at least that made me laugh. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow—right?
Hey Greg-Guess what?
I am not listening to you. I am not accepting anything. I don’t care how many capital letters you use. Stop telling the rest of us how to act.
Exactly. It’s a particularly lame hedge, as of course any team is unlikely to win it all, and if somehow they do, he can just chalk it up to “I’m glad I was wrong.” Just really weak.
Exactly.
So if I think they win and I’m wrong I’ll be disappointed and have to eat crow. Big fucking deal. It’s not the end of the world. I’m not afraid of failure.
Lefites futile, righties crushing him. if only they didn’t send up all those lefties the last two innings…..
And he still doesn’t pinch hit. What the fuck is wrong with out manager?
Fuck you Joe Girardi.
Holy fuck Girardi…still not pinch hitting for Chavez? Are you friggin stupid? Fire this moron after the game please.
He’s an idiot. I can’t see any other logic.
Hey you gotta tip your cap to him. Randy Wolff is about as tough as it gets. Made some great pitches. I’m not panicking, tomorrow is another day.
Glad I’ve been missing this one . . . Mulan’s on ABC Family. HOLLA! Sounds like Girardi is once again managing himself out of NYC?
Strop time part deux?
Cano gets a 1-0 fastball literally right down the middle at 90 mph and doesn’t do a thing with it with a runner on base.
The bottom line is that this is almost 100% on the offense. They are getting pitches to hit… and not hitting them. Yes, Phelps wasn’t great today. But they have had 11 baserunners and only scored 2 runs so far.
Their pitching has not been that great lately, but it was due for a slump. The offense has done almost nothing to bail them out. They have not won a game in which their pitching has allowed more than 4 runs since August 8, despite this having happened 9 times since then.
Girardi isn’t helping either. We’re getting runners on late int he game but he decides it’s best to leave his lefties in to face left handed pitching…
What is Joe’s binder thinking?
Orioles 60-0 leading after 7. 60-1 please.
No point in watching this at bat. We know the outcome.
Happy to say that I was wrong
Oh Schnozberries. The Grandyman’s up . . . Ominous. Strictly ominous.
Hoping the Orioles get Earl Weaver’d here.
THE TYING RUN WILL COME TO THE PLATE IN THIS GAME.
(Wait, am I doing that right?)
I’m glad the offense is showing life, despite the fact that our manager clearly isn’t.
Martin’s had a hot bat… but is there some guy named Dickerson on the bench?
Righties hitting .156 vs. Strop, lefties around .235.
This is the moment of the game, and he is letting Martin hit here?
base hit PLEASE. not even asking for a HR.
That was probably a strike.
Martin can’t hit righties, so we leave him in for a right despite having 2 other catchers.
Why is Martin batting?
Who else is going to bat?
The guy who was on deck…? The inning might have ended there and he never would have had a chance. Got lucky that it worked out, but the wrong decision.
What’s Greg’s mantra? Expect the worst and never be disappointed? Seems appropriate for the 2012 Yankees. RIGHT ON YA, GREG!
The REAL question is . . . Can they muster up TWO more hits to scratch the ever-elusive surface of double digitdom?
C-Dick’s gotta jack one here
C-Dick. Greatest nickname ever.
Big Swingin’ Dickerson
Another good AB by Martin, now come on Dickerson!
Need a big dick here
Pinch run for Martin at first?
Now they probably should.
2 out probably scores on a double anyway.
Green light! Play for the slam!
DO Not swing!
Ichiro goes lift-off.
Calling it now.
Strop is entering Monument Park status.
I would have stuck with Jones but please prove me wrong…
Thank u C-Dick
oh god they’re really starting to get my hopes up…..
Don’t. Just . . . don’t.
You are doing it wrong. Don’t get your hopes up. Expect the worst so you are never disappointed
Strop can just blow Ichiro away if he can throw a strike. Ichiro can’t catch up to the FB.
For Dickerson’s nickname I nominate Dick the Stick (reference to his bat).
I like Fat Cock (in reference to his penis) better.
To the point. I like it.
Ee-chi-ROW! Ee-chi-ROW! Ee-chi-ROW!
ICHIRO!!!!!!!!!!
Man my heart is pounding.
Let’s do this!
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck you!
Pedro Strop for President!
Ichiro!!!!!
Weak grounders ftw!!!
ICHIRO IS THE GREATEST TRADE CASHMAN HAS EVER MADE! CLUTCH!!!
Holy shit!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the laugh – much needed laugh.
That works!
Get another base hit.
YES!
Wow.
MASN with the “Kay-esque” call… and it’s a 1 run game!
what do i do with all this blood on my wrists ???????????
ICHRIO!
Ichiro broke the internet!
Pedro Strop turned the season around?
2x
If they pull this off, it might.
But you KNEW they wouldn’t!
Man, this game is pretty awesome now.
Nobody get up from their seats, or sit down, or move. Whatever good luck spot you found, for the love of MO, stay there until the Yanks take the lead!
Haven’t seen this in awhile. So this is what clutch feels like.
If the Yankees win this game, I think this beats out the comeback against Boston for the Yankees best game of the year
Can we now declare the Yankees underdogs and never again, for the rest of the season, expect anything even remotely similar to a win? Can we do that? Don’t expect to win. Don’t expect to lose. Just expect nothing. THE YEAR OF NOTHING!
One more hit then, RoSo for the Untuck…
I can imagine in an alternate universe the Orioles’ Greg saying, “Nothing you can do. Bad luck dribbler.”
THE ORIOLES AREN’T WINNING THE WORLD SERIES THIS YEAR
-Orioles’ Greg
My theory is that the Orioles overcame the 10 game deficit and then took their foot off the petal and now can’t get restarted. Complacency driven by the stats and the media.
Complacency and Injuries.
“those two out rallies are
tougheasy”Robertson next inning please.
Ichiro cares.
Well, hold the fort down…I’m guessing…DRob.
4-5-6 up for the O’s. this inning is huge.
Ichiro-pretty good for a guy that should be batting tenth because he’s of the very worst regulars in baseball
HALLO ALL!
Just got in from the bf’s apartment, where we were watching the game and I kept violently throwing my phone down on the bed every time something stupid happened.
And now… I got home and the Yankees tied the game.
HMMMMMM. GO YANKS.
Just…. get back in the car or back to walking or doing whatever you were doing between your bf’s and home…
Vroom vroom
DON’T MOVE.
I’m sitting and watching and drinking water and not moving but NOW we’re losing, so wtf
You drank water? REALLY? AND typed?
Com on, Erica. Get your head in the game.
Did you miss the comeback on your way home??
I was home for the comeback but had the radio on, so I didn’t actually see it
I would love to remember what it feels like to see the other team put up a zero after we put up a 1+….
I still don’t remember.
Fu*kin’ Joba! Fat bastard.
Long-lost curveball?
wow fucking hate this team again.
OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.
wtf DRob
unfucking real
Well fuck. Meatball
Fucking buzzkill.
Unreal.
NO.
okay resuming my cutting or something fuck
Way to go calling for an inside fastball.
Fucking idiots man.
He didn’t. He called for a fastball high and way out of the zone. Robertson just missed.
Had a feeling that would happen. Dammit!!
After all that…Goddamn Bullpen
Of course. F*ck this team. Wow. Shutdown innings assH*les!!!!!!!
Now Greg’s universe is back in order
And I should have known that would have lasted zero batters.
Seriously, fuck this fucking team.
Ballgame. Robertson has been trash for us, cost us a game in Tampa and now this one. How do you throw that 1-2?
Bah.
2 strikes.
Never fuck fails.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
WHY GOD WHY.
He really missed his spot on that one.
Ugh pretty sure most people say it coming when Martin called for a ball inside. Terrible spot for Jones.
He called for it to be way high and out of the zone, not inside thigh high.
Just bad luck. Had he swung an inch lower he would have popped that up.
At least I;m not crying over spilt milk and crying my eyes out.
huh?
If I had gotten my hopes up after that rally, I would now be an emotional mess. Instead, I’m non plussed and know that this is not life or death.
wow DRob looks like shit. he’s sitting 88-90.
THROW THE FUCKING CURVE BALL
All the sabermetric evidence notwithstanding, Robbie hasn’t been the same since he came off the DL
Soriano > Robertson.
Whne your shutdown guys are getting hut, you know its not going to happem
*hit
*Whne
*Gegr
You mean like earlier when the game was over?
I would have been bawling now if I’d gotten my hopes up after that comeback.
Then bawl. Don’t not care.
Bawling really?
Or tearing up and becoming despondent
Okay Martin needs to stop calling the pitch there…
Get Cervelli to catch! Fist pumps!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Ask my bro watching the game with me. As soon as I saw Martin set up inside I said why the fuck are they going inside on him. Absolutely awful pitch selection especially with Robertson barely throwing 90 mph these days.
How the hell you blame Martin for the bum ass Robertson completely choking in a big moment. Worst loss of the season, all that effort for nothing this team disgusts me with the total lack of heart
Not gonna win many ballgames with one effective pitcher in the bullpen. Robertson lost us a game in Tampa and has likely lost us another game tonight. Joe needs to pull the plug and go with someone else next time.
WHO?
everyone else is worse
Who is this magical bullpen arm that Joe has kept secret from us?
There’s no one else, so run a risk: bring up this Montgomery kid and let him show what he’s got.
Well this game is on the pitching. gave up 4 homeruns…Why can’t we have good pitching an hitting at the same goddamn time.
I have noted that the last time one of the core 4 who have been Yankees each year since ’95 (so not pettitte, astros) that when one misses at least 3/4 of the season-ish, the team did not make the playoffs
2008: Posada
09 none
10 none
11 none
…2012: Rivera????
I sure hope not!
So does Russell Martin just never calls for a curveball anymore?
How obnoxious are these fans? First winning season since Clinton was president and they’re acting like their team’s been a contender all along. Lame.
They’re assholes for rooting for their team?
(The rich kids get SO angry when things don’t go their way)
Did I say they were assholes for simply rooting for their team? Of course not. I’m talking about acting in an unwarranted, obnoxious manner as if their team hasn’t been in the desert for the last decade and a half. They’ve gotten a taste and now…they’re like the Red Sux fans after ’07. At least those guys won 2 in 4 years, unlike the O’s and their 29 year championship-deprived stretch.
That’s true for almost all teams that have gone through long droughts. At least the Orioles fans are actually into it, unlike the useless cowbell ringing asshats in Tampa that can’t even sell 60% of the stadium for a playoff game…
Cheering for your team. Doesn’t get any more obnoxious than that.
kill me now.
fuck this fucking team
ARE YOU EFFIN KIDDING ME OM GOM OGMOMGOMG WHY WH WHYWHY
WHY
WHY
WHY
STOP GIVING UP HOME RUNS TO MARK FUCKING REYNOLDS
No curve ball again.
Just a fucking joke.
You would think by now teams now a 2 strike fastball is coming.
HEY MARTIN STOP CALLING FOR THE FASTBALL AGAINST THESE GUYS YOU DUMBSHIT
This is pretty frustrating.
This game is showing us how much Dave Phelps and Dave Robertson are not ready for these pressure packed situations. Robertson tried to be a closer and it didn’t work. Phelps hasn’t been good since we started slipping and this became a race again. Another HR. Robertson is garbage.
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW THRRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDD
PLEASE!
Yes please.
I feel relieved to know they really wanted to lose. Robertson is terrible, the fact that Mark Reynolds owns them makes me sad.
This is just comical now.
I didn’t think I could hate Mark Reynolds more than I did just a few days ago.
I was wrong.
Too funny fuck me.
Martin is a terrible catcher. But hey, they felt like Montero couldn’t do it. Jerks.
Martin makes Robertson throw fastballs down the middle?
When you call for the fastball this happens.
Someone tell D-Rob to start throwing his curve ball again.
Someone tell D-Rob to kill himself
lol BUT he went to Alabama to look at tornado damage! He’s cool!
Guys tries to help a place that’s wrecked from a disaster. He had a bad game like the rest of the pen. What have you done beside bitch about everything?
You first.
This is what happens when emotion gets out of control.
Also what happens when douchebags take the game too seriously. Telling a guy to kill himself because of one bad game is just pitiful.
Yes.
Greg, forget the two extremes.
They just gave all that mojo back.
Fuck! This team seems completely inept at having a holistic game lately. If its not the starter, it’s the offense, if it’s not the D it’s the bullpen. At this point, they deserve to lose the division lead and this game.
Robertson proving why we say most relievers are volatile. He was great last year and is now shit.
Wow. Just…wow.
The offense finally, finally shows up, and Robertson turns around and just wastes it, completely. So deflationary. Failures like this kill momentum not just for the game but for a few days, and if there’s one thing that Yankees desperately desperately need it’s momentum.
momentum does not exist in baseball. I hate when people think such a thing exists. The yankees will probably lose tomorrow because their offense or bullpen will come up short again.
you don’t think momentum exists? what are you, a cartesian? read some newton, dummy.
besides, baseball analysts who have ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GAME talk about momentum all the time, I will take the opinion of people who have experience with the game over your opinion thank you
Doesn’t exist. Yankees took 3 of 4 from Texas. How’d that momentum work? Oh the Red Sox took 2 of 3 from the Yankees in the Stadium how’d that momentum work?
The Yankees actually won 2/3 in that series against the Red Sox.
You mean analysts like Harold Reynolds and Mitch Williams, among others? Geniuses, those guys.
Yankee bullpen:
LOL
Is Robertson hurt? He’s lost like 4mph off his FB.
He’s like Wade with out the other pitches.
Is this freaky happening?
I am so fucking done. Apologies to Mike Axisa for profanity; I have NO idea how else to express myself.
Careful. This is a children’s site.
WHAT THE FUK
WHAT IN THE FUCK.. FUCK IT ALL.. COMPLETE AND UTTER TRASH
Is this really happening?
Good thing Russell Martin is so good at calling a game.
hahahahahhahahah. Oh this is hilarious. Everyone of those fake fans in the crowd must me creaming in their newly purchased Orioles hats.
I’d say the Orioles are stealing signs, but when your pitching sucks, you don’t have to steal signs.
I thought the rays were too, tonight is a combo of that and just missed locations
Rays are shit because the fans won’t support them.
Orioles are shit for having fans show up. Go fuck yourself, dummy.
wasted many months watching this team just play like ass. now i’m done
Robertson is no Rivera…. you can’t throw one pitch over and over unless you have tremendous movement and pinpoint control. He’s got good action on the pitch, but nowhere near the command.
He threw 1 curve behind a hitter, 1 change to a lefty and everything else was a cutter. He won’t throw the change to a righty and he seemingly has no feel for the curve of late. You throw 6 straight cutters to a HR hitter and you only need to miss once.
Did he forget how to throw a 4 seam fastball?
To me this is another coaching issue (Rothschild); this is not new and he’s gotten cutter happy. He’s gone from 26% cutters last year to 52% this year (and much higher recently). Hitters are sitting on it.
No you’re no done watching the Yankees. If I had a dollar for everyone who said this during a losing streak…
You’ll be watching this evening. And if the Yanks turn it around and go on a streak, you’ll be watching every minute going forward.
If this was hockey Girardi would be fired tomorrow.
So if they lose, new worst loss of the season?
Logical me: it’s definitely up there.
Current-mood me: This doesn’t even need to be discussed. Yes, yes, 1,000 times yes.
A tie for first still counts as being in first, right?
Right?
This has to be the worst loss of the season right?
The Blue Jays loss was the worst loss of the season.
Nope, losing back to back games to the red sox hands down were the worst, especially after that awesome 2 run homer by Tex off of Padilla.
Joe should announce tonight after the ballgame that Boone Logan and Cody Eppley will be assuming the 8th inning duties. Robertson will be relegated to 6th inning duties with Joba. He’s just not ready to pitch in these big games and neither is Dave Phelps. How many big games have those two cost us lately?
Not too many…… Phelps outside of his last 3 starts has been great. Robertson has had a rough week.
You’re the definition of an overdramatic yankee fan. We all know they’re playing like shit. You don’t have to move your 2nd best reliever out of set up duties, when he earned that title with his stellar play over the past 3 seasons.

D-Rob hasn’t been the same since he was hurt but they never got anyone else.
PBS is pretty good.
A new Lowe.
Why does the league have no trouble against Reynolds but he hits 6 HRs in only 42 ABs against the Yanks?
the rest of the league doesn’t throw him 90mph meatballs over the middle of the plate repeatedly.
Either the baseball gods hate this team again(Last time was in ’04) or the Orioles are really FOR REAL.
A bunch of shitty hitters are really showing up this game.
Now it’s the fault of baseball gods? Wow.
Go watch Obama.
It’s always wiser to choose the simpler hypothesis that explains all or most of the available fact: the Orioles are for real.
The Yankees are for real too, only the other way.
WHAT IS GOING ON
Girardi’s obviously thrown in the towel… Lowe is in the game.
I honestly can’t believe this happened. It’s as if they’re trying to find new and exciting ways to lose. This is just brutal. Absolute spirit breaker. When we score we can’t pitch, when we pitch we don’t score. Unbelievable.
I really want o see them go up and in on Reynolds tomorrow
Or throw him some breaking balls…
Jesus CHRIST. Think we can come back from this?
uh, no.
Naw. Two big ass rallies in one game is too hard. The math doesn’t add up.
Alright…one loss (maybe, still have 3 outs left). We’re seeing good signs from the offense in the last two game with their ability to score late. Hopefully we get good pitching tomorrow.
Now see to me this is perfectly acceptable fan behavior. You find a positive and hope for the best, and really that’s all we as fans can do. We have ZERO impact on the game.
I was watching PBS – switching back and forth – did they jump Robertson on 1st pitch after they saw he didn’t have his curve?
Man, I miss Mo-
He threw only one curve that was over Jones’s head.
This team is bad. It has no strengths.
Not true.
They are very good at finding inventive new ways to lose games.
it’s all right to cry
crying takes the sad out of you
it’s all right to cry
it might make you feel better
it’s all right to feel things
though the feelings may be strange
feelings are such real things
and they change and change and change
it’s all right to cry
crying takes the mad out of you
it’s all right to cry
it might make you feel better
No, it’s not really helping at all
Seriously, Greg: You say you come here because you like discussing baseball with us. But you seem to hate our attitude towards the game. You keep wanting to change our attitudes so you have a more positive experience. But we’re not changing. You can stop posting if you don’t want to. But if you want to keep posting, stop trying to tell us how to act.
He’s just trying to fit in. It’s a culture of ‘waaaa don’t say bad things’ here.
You can leave too, for that matter (also, what? Since when?).
Bring up Montgomery. Give the kid a quick chance. See what he has. The current bp is imploding, so what have they to lose?
Should have brought Swisher in in the 8th to pitch and then pinch hit for him in the 9th,
This could have been the back breaker for them, instead they flipped the script, let’s see if the yanks can get off the floor tomorrow
Mark Reynolds even screws us on defense.
Come on people, just chill and relax. Things have been as bad as they could for the last few weeks. The Yankees are still in first place and there are still over 20 games left. The New York Giants are one game out of first and only have 15 games left. Is the New York Giants season over? I read the comments on this site everyday because the vast majority of you are bigger Yankee fans than I will ever be. You guys are always so positive, even when the Yankees lose. I guess my point is that the team is much better on paper than they are currently playing and there is still a chance that they turn it around.
All good points. Your name fits.
“I guess my point is that the team is much better on paper than they are currently playing”
Is it, though? There’s an awful lot of garbage scattered throughout the lineup, rotation and bullpen on this team.
Meh, the Yankees have already completed 80% of their season, so they have far less time then the Giants who have 94% of their season remaining.
They are who they are now. An old team who’s worn down. Do you really think Ibanez and Jones are going to suddenly start tearing it up? That Granderson won’t stop looking foolish at the plate?
Orioles are getting big hits from shitty hitters like McClouth, Davis and Reynolds. You don’t think someone this team might get hot at the right time and help us win like those scrubs have?
“That Granderson won’t stop looking foolish at the plate?”
Well, yes actually. And hopefully today was the start of that.
I hate to be the one to say this, but this collapse is worse than the ’11 Sox. Sorry, Greg. Here’s why . . . EVERYONE sucks now. EVERYONE. No one is doing ANYTHING right! If I believed in voodoo (which I most CERTAINLY do) I’d say that somebody somewhere cast a massive hex on these here Yankees. This is, BY FAR, the worst prolonged baseball I’ve ever witnessed this team play. After tonight, and I seriously hate to be hasty, but something NEEDS to happen. I’d fire Joe. I would. I really would. A message HAS TO be sent to this team. This collapse is monumental. Fire Girardi. Why? Why not, that’s WHY!
No, it’s not. Not even close. Nor did we collapse yet.
It’s worse. Today, just like EVERY other day, they’ve found ANOTHER way to lose. They’re maniacal losers.
SO it’s the hitter’s fault that the pen imploded? It’s one thing that’s hurting us, not like everyone else is chipping in and telling the pen to throw meatballs.
?
You said they are finding ways to lose, making it seem like it the team is totally just giving up. But this game the offense tied it up before the pen imploded. So it’s not as if the team isn’t trying or purposely sucking. Right now it’s just that when one thing is working another isn’t. Yet those two things have no affect on each other.
Oh, so they blew a nine and a half game lead with one month left in the season?
No, their stretch of horrid baseball is going on two months now . . . Soon, it’ll be 3.
And they still haven’t blown the lead yet, whereas the Red Sox blew it in ONE month.
So it took them 3 months to blow a 10 game lead..how is that anything like the sox? There’s still games left in this month.
I still prefer this to losing 6-1 without a fight.
To me this is another coaching issue (Rothschild); this is not new, he’s gotten cutter happy. He’s gone from 26% cutters last year to 52% this year (and much higher recently). Hitters are sitting on it because he’s stopped throwing a 4 seamer and they can spit on the curve. If he can’t throw the curve, he has to at least mix in 4 seamers.
Interesting, the O’s have stopped their pitchers from using the cutter at all.
Not sure that’s the answer, but the cutter is only a good pitch when located well. When you throw it over and over it’s a matter of time before you make a mistake.
When you miss location, it’s basically 1-3mph slower fastball that acts like a hanging slider. Hughes thankfully stopped throwing it and while it’s nice to think that with Mo in the pen he can just teach everyone the pitch, he can’t teach them his ridiculous ability to put it wherever he wants.
How many Rays pitchers throw the cutter? (starters or bullpen?) It can be an effective pitch at times, but not something you can live on (unless you have Mo’s command of it)
Well if you’re going to blame rothschild, you can also blame Martin for not calling the curveball more. D-Rob doesn’t really shake off the catcher, so he’s throwing whatever Martin is calling.
I want to stress eat.
So in the middle of having an existential crisis over the fact that I’m 23 at the end of the month and have accomplished nothing of value in any aspect of my life the Yankees do this…
I hate every one of you young fools. You are 23 dumbass, you aren’t suppose to know anything or have a clue about life. What you are suppose to do is make lots of mistakes, blow lots of money, and then figure it out. But no every single 20 something thinks they are suppose to be the next Zuckerberg. Grow a sack and get over yourself.
BURNNNNN
Wow, you need to fuck off good sir. Just because somebody is young doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have accomplished anything. My friend is a year older than me, has already graduated Rutgers with a degree in finance, is married, has a full time job, is in a position to officially run the company he works for within five years, and looking to buy a house. I am not saying I should have accomplished all of that, but in comparison I’ve done jack shit. I’ve had 3 jobs in the last calender year, haven’t been able to stay in school long enough to earn an associate degree because of financial issues, and have a hard time maintaining even friendly relations with people. You don’t fucking know me. Just from uttering one sentence of not being happy about my position in life you’re going to tell me to “grow a sack and get over myself” fuck you kindly.
Widget has a point but he’s shitting on you from behind a monitor so don’t take it too seriously. I’ve been a Yankee fan since the 60′s when they ALWAYS played like this. The great thing about baseball is there’s a lot of it. As for being 23, fuck just enjoy it. It all works out in the end.
Dont feel bad. Im 32 and I havent accomplished shit in my life either lol. Well I have never been arrested or gotten a ticket so there is that.
This baltimore team is juicing bigtime
Look at the power stats
Everyone’s fault but the Yankees. Go watch Obama lie.
Oh come on, now their defense is trolling us…could have easily been 3 hits in a row.
man on with 2 outs. Yankees have them right where they want them to be.
Notice he chant isn’t “Let’s Go O’s,” it’s “Yankees suck.”
even they care more about booing the Yanks than cheering their own team
Yes, this is the counterargument to those who are defending the Orioles fans.
Good for them. The rich kids just got raped.
can’t wait to hear what sensei Girardi has to say after this game.
DOUBLE DIGIT HITS!!!!! THE HEX HAS BEEN LIFTED!!!!!
Now it all pays off… by keeping Chavez in the game against Wolf, he now has Chavez up in a key spot in the 9th
Girardi is a genius for saving him. I see the logic now.
That last YES shot of Phil Hughes was beautifully ironic.
He would be so proud of what the Yankees pitching staff did tonight. Six home runs.
At least the offense showed life late. Off course on the same day the pitching is just utter crap. They need a game where everything is working…not just one side. Too bad we have Hughes up tomorrow.
Punched in the mouth.
Think of it this way – we have Phil HR Hughes going tomorrow. Actually, I’m not nearly as down on him as most. I learned something about some pitchers not being able to throw a 2-seamer which is what I in my stupidity thought was wrong with Phil but he’s either going to have to learn something to keep it in the park or go to 1 of those big NL parks.
G’nite all – maybe tomorrow…
Y’all where right, I’m gonna go drink and drive now. Thank you.

….but they’ve already lost this game.

” In my thoughts, I use the technique of positive visualization.”
-Christopher Moltisanti
And yet, in the end, they lost.
Speaking of Chris Moltisanti, the Yankees are now about as competent as he and Paulie were when they were lost in the snow-covered Pine Barrens chasing a Russian.
What ever happened to that Russian guy? They never said right? He went up the tree and then what?
His fate was never revealed.
I always wondered what happened to him.
They came really close to winning..before the pen came in and lost it.
The bottom line is that too many players on this team lose focus in the most critical moments of a game.
Robertson tonight gave up both of his home runs after getting way ahead of the hitters. The home run to Jones was on a 1-2 count, and Jones is a super aggressive hitter. You have to know who you are facing, and you can’t miss even remotely near the plate in that spot. You have to focus harder and make sure you miss off the plate.
Too many guys losing focus. Hitters flailing at pitches out of the zone with runners on base. What was amazing about that Martin at bat was how he re-focused after chasing the sliders and laid off a tough 3-2 pitch. How many guys in the lineup make that kind of adjustment? Not many anymore.
The Yankees used to pride themselves on adjustments. 2nd or 3rd time through the order, they would adjust and start hitting a pitcher. Now, they get Yankees hitters out the same way every at bat. No adjustment necessary.
It would really suck if we shit the bed in Baltimore and then the Suxx put us out of it. What sucks worse is I think that’s a fairly strong possibility.
Or we can win the next 3 and then sweep the Sox as the Orioles lose.
I like that plan. I say we try it out.
How many homers for Reynolds tomorrow?
My final analysis thoughts:
. I nominate this as worst loss of the season over the Toronto loss. About equal in brutality, but this was a much more important game.
. That said, we have now scored six runs two games in a row. That is a REALLY good sign. Maybe, just maybe, we’re starting to pull out of it.
. I’m glad we put up a fight. Perhaps with the offense starting to rev it up we can have them pick up our three good pitchers a few times…
Since we have 3 games more, not the worst loss in the world.
The funny thing is I actually think if this team can get into the playoffs they have a good a chance as any other team to win it all. If Pettitte can come back they will have a very good Top 3 in the rotation. Even if he doesnt they still will have CC and Kuroda which is a much better Top 2 in the rotation than they had the last 2 years in the playoffs (Pettitte not being 100% in 2010).
In the past getting to the playoffs wasnt the problem winning once they got there was (aside from 2009 obviously), hopefully this season its the other way around and they struggle to make the playoffs but once they get in they go on a great run.
Can I get what you are smoking?
Yeah I didnt really believe what I typed but screw it Im trying to be positive.
I agree, believe it or not.
Oh well. At least I have Portal 2 to go back to.
That game is fucking AWESOME. I’m a guy who doesn’t really like shooters, so this might be my new favorite games.
Currently Potato Glados and I are trying to get back to Wheatley (no spoilers, please).
Yankees are now an incredible 3-20 in games in which they don’t hit a homer. What a startling difference a team can be if the homerun is not coming to them.
