Game 148: Let’s Play Two

(Jason Szenes/Getty)

The Yankees took care of business this afternoon and won the first game of today’s doubleheader behind the returning Andy Pettitte, and now they’ll try to win Game Two behind shortstop Derek Jeter. The Cap’n will be playing the field for the first time in exactly a week, since he came down hard on his left ankle running out a ground ball and aggravated the bone bruise he’s been nursing for a few weeks. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
DH Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
CF Curtis Granderson
2B Jayson Nix
1B Casey McGehee
LF Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

RHP David Phelps

Game Two of today’s doubleheader is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on My9. Enjoy.

  1. Get Phelps Up says:

I’m hoping we get to see a picture of Alex in the sidebar when all is said and done tonight.

  2. Havok9120 says:

    I’m feeling confident.

This probably means we’re doomed, but I’m sticking with it.

    • RetroRob says:

I am too, but I dislike double headers. They seem to end up being split more often than not, and I remember some study on this that pretty showed they were split more often than they should be based on team records.

  3. J.R. says:

You really have to hope that Phelps can give 6 or 7 IP, otherwise its Freddy time.

  4. EDDARD says:

Girardi used every reliever and their brother in the first game so it’s up to Big Game Dave Phelps to give us another big game just as he did in Boston. A lot of pressure on the kid but he didn’t get the name Big Game Dave Phelps for nothing.

  5. Great to not see washed up Raul or Andrew in tonights line-up

  6. Pat D says:

    OMG, a Casey McGehee sighting.

Also, I’m really thinking of murdering my family right now, so someone talk me out of it.

  7. The Real Greg says:

I know Mike Trout has been more valuable, but if Miggy wins the Triple Crown, you gotta give it to him.

    • Hummingbird S. says:

I have to agree (amazing!). You have to give it to Miggy, especially considering how much of Trout’s value is tied to his D and how uncertain D metrics are.

  8. Havok9120 says:

That was some interesting camera work on that flyball.

  9. Dan in Athens says:

Any idea what channel has the Yankee feed on DirecTV? I’m only getting the Jays feed on 725

  10. Hummingbird S. says:

that’s some nice movement on the 2-seamer

  11. Havok9120 says:

Ooof. Lets hope they don’t start squaring those up any better.

  12. Joba Dobba Doo says:

Why isn’t Hughes pitching? Wasn’t he scheduled to go against Romero tonight?

  13. Joba Dobba Doo says:

Why isn’t Hughes pitching? Wasn’t he scheduled to go against Romero tonight?

    • EDDARD says:

They moved the rest of the starters back a day due to the rainout. It was either have the fill in starter(Phelps) pitch vs the depleted Jays or vs the playoff bound As.

  14. Chilango says:

Who’s the long man tonight? Freddy?

  15. RetroRob says:

Two of those flyball outs went much further than I thought. Ball is either carrying, or the pitches caught too much of the bats.

  16. Havok9120 says:

You guys who were playing the drinking game during the day game:

They just made another mention of Alverez settling in after the 1st.

  17. RetroRob says:

Odds against Jeter getting another 200-hit season?

It goes against my instincts and sabermetric leanings, but I say he does it again.

    • Havok9120 says:

Yeah, I’m not willing to bet against another one at this point. I’d say the odds are against it, but I still think it’ll happen.

      • jjyank says:

Of course. Odds are most certainly against it, but Jeter might just the be legendary-type player that we tell our kids about that can buck the trend.

    • Mikhel says:

As long as his BAbip remains the same (HIGH BAbip, similar to what Ichiro did in his prime and what AJax does), there is a good chance he at least gets 186-190 in any of the next two seasons.

      • RetroRob says:

He’s always had a high BABIP for his career. It’s a function of hitting lots of line drives to the opposite field, and that other trait he has of hitting weak ground balls, many of which end up hits. The only time his BABIP sunk was from 2010 to mid-2011.

The odds are against it due to his age. Yet he’s an outlier, so hard to bet against him at the moment. He is not going to be taken out of the lead-off spot for now and he’s durable, so he might do it again.

  18. Dan in Athens says:

Seriously, can someone give me the Directv channel carrying the home Yankee feed?

  19. Did Andruw teach Alex to swing at a change like that?

  20. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Arod having a great day so far.

  21. The Real Greg says:

Damn their SS was quick to release.

ARod got in trouble swinging at 2 changeups.

  22. IkeMaxisa says:

If both miss the playoffs Jeter should be in the conversation

  23. CG says:

Can anyone tell me what channel this is on? I have comcast, YES says its on, but it isnt.

  24. Pat D says:

That is the dumbest question I’ve ever seen.

  25. teddy says:

cano has been dreadful against leftys this year, why is he hitting 3rd or should had him bunt

  26. RetroRob says:

Lets go, Phelps. You need to throw strikes. You are not a power pitcher.

  27. The Real Greg says:

The ump is squeezing Phelps a bit

  28. Cy Pettitte says:

this line up is fucking terrible. stop walking people.

  29. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Strikes please.

  30. Hummingbird S. says:

    nice 3-2 curve..

  31. Chilango says:

Big K early for Phelps, nice

  32. RetroRob says:

    Kay talking about defense. Funny.

  33. Hummingbird S. says:

    0-2, time to nimble

  34. EDDARD says:

Dave Phelps has been watching Phil Hughes too much. Attack this AA lineup!

  35. Hummingbird S. says:

ridiculous… Nunez gets to that ball

  36. RetroRob says:

Jeter did not look good at all there. Not his strong side to begin with, but really slow there. Yet funny again considering Kay talking about defense and at shortstop.

  37. your mom says:

That’s what happens when you walk people.

  38. Fin says:

2 walks kill you every time.

  39. Matt says:

Phelps is attacking the lineup. He is making good pitches. They just put together some good AB’s on him in the 2nd.

The real issue is that they let a huge opportunity slip away in the first. The kind that if you capitalize, Toronto basically packs it in and hands you a win. The offense rarely does its job, and it puts a lot more pressure on the pitching staff to be perfect with every pitch.

  40. your mom says:

I wonder if Phelps will be better as our 5th starter or as a long reliever next season(assuming he’s no traded)?

  41. Pat D says:

I’ve decided that Tampa needs to start winning again in case Baltimore is still close those last 3 games of the season.

  42. RetroRob says:

Jeez, he almost didn’t make it back.

  43. Hummingbird S. says:

    got lucky

  44. I feel like Yakety Saks should be playing behind John and Suzyn’s broadcast.

  45. Hummingbird S. says:

    time to capitalize!

  46. Joe says:

Who else has this odd liking for McGehee?

  47. EDDARD says:

1st and 2nd again here. Hit king Ichiro up next to get us on the board.

  48. your mom says:

I don’t get the bunt attempt with Stewart next.

  49. Hummingbird S. says:

that is seriously pathetic… Nix had to be strolling around the bases. He had plenty of time to score.

  50. Joe says:

Damn! He should have gotten Cano out earlier too. Colby has a rocket.

  51. The Real Greg says:

    Good play by the Jays

  52. Havok9120 says:

    That was a fantastic throw.

  53. your mom says:

    Yay! RISP hit!

  54. Pat D says:

I still can’t tell if he tagged him.

  55. WhittakerWalt says:

  56. Nice Scheister says:

  57. Ro says:

    Dang. That kid can throw.

  58. Cy Pettitte says:

    well that was unexpected

  59. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  60. Hummingbird S. says:

    Stewie!! and not a cheapie!!

  61. Cuso says:

    ChRISPy Stewart!

  62. jjyank says:

Michael Kay, does Rasmus really look like the type of guy that washes his face multiple times a day? Seriously.

  63. The Real Greg says:

  64. RetroRob says:

Imagine if Nix wasn’t thrown out.

I have difficulty letting things go!

  65. Joe says:

  66. Erica says:

    Does it work?

  67. EDDARD says:

    Chris Stewart clutch hit!

  68. Pat D says:

I’m just now realizing that on my phone is behind even ESPN’s scoreboard. That’s annoying.

  69. Allie says:

    wow, OK THEN! Stewart!

  70. Hummingbird S. says:

Awful AB by Jeter. This offense needs to be better. They have 3 hits and 3 walks (and a SB) in 2 innings but just 1 run. That is terrible.

  71. Celerino Sanchez says:

Every time I see Jayson Nix play it reminds of why some guys are simply AAAA players. He looks like he can do some good things but then you end up scratching your head. Draws a walk (good); gets picked off (bad); sfae because of a bad throw (good); almost caught going back to the bag (bad); nailed at home on a good throw but he slid right into the tag (bad).

  72. Nice Scheister says:

Bad inning… WE LET EM OFF THE HOOK!!

  73. Hummingbird S. says:

    Phelps trying to outcrap Romero.

  74. Cy Pettitte says:

Did Davis stop for a snack or what?

  75. RetroRob says:

Colby Rasmus: Most repulsive player in baseball.

    Purely subjective.

  76. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Stewie doing all kinds of good things.

  77. Hummingbird S. says:

    that was nice!

  78. Joe says:

    Stewie with the throw!

  79. Karl Krawfid says:

    Stewart must be on Roids.

  80. Kevin G. says:

Hell of a throw by Stewy

  81. jjyank says:

Anyone ever get a macadamia nut that didn’t have any sort of opening? So disappointing.

  82. Erica says:

    Garbage time play.

  83. EDDARD says:

Look at Swish tumbling around out there, just having fun. Great catch.

  84. jjyank says:

    Plouffy, have you been replaced?

    September 19, 2012 at 8:00 pm

I am not letting this meme die yet, damn it.

  85. Tom says:

Cano doing his job again and advancing the runner.

  86. Hummingbird S. says:

big bats not working again.. very disappointing.

  87. The Real Greg says:

That was ball 4. Phelps better get that.

  88. your mom says:

Well, at least the productive part of the line-up will be hitting next inning.

  89. Joe says:

With our luck Felix will lay an egg or pitch 8 great innings and then the O’s win in the 10th.

  90. I hate when my job actually requires work to be done…I missed all the scoring.

  91. Pat D says:

    Juan Guzman.

  92. Some runs would be nice right about now.

  93. Pat D says:

Whenever I see that clip of Lawrie, I always hear Jim Ross shouting, “As god is my witness, he is broken in half!”

  94. Hummingbird S. says:

To make Romero look like a decent pitcher twice in 2012 is really impressive. Only this offense.

  95. Ichiro?!?! He’s been en fuego today. I’m going to have to stop making fun of John and Suzyn for being on his dick.

  96. And Chris Stewart continues to prove that I could hit better than him…

  97. The Real Greg says:

Defense has saved the Blue Jays at least 2 runs in this game. First Rasmus and then Lawrie

  98. WhittakerWalt says:

“There’s no reason Ichiro shouldn’t be playing against lefties.”

    Guess who said this.

  99. OMG! Bagels! says:

What is the name of the RAB poster from last year with the long name who posted all the time on this site but hasn’t this year and is either here or not here this year?

  100. The Real Greg says:

Why has that happened so many times this year?

  101. Chilango says:

Phelps has settled down nicely. But 4 hits off Romero is a disgrace.

  102. Erica says:

    Swish! Don’t leave us.

  103. your mom says:

WTF is up with first pitch swinging tonight?

  104. The Real Greg says:

ARod has been dazzled by Romero’s change all night

  105. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Yep, Arod’s having a great day, eh Greg?

  106. Erica says:

Still not getting why ARod gets booed.

  107. Dela G says:

    wow they booed a-rod

  108. Joe says:

    Anyone from Yonkers here?

  109. Karl Krawfid says:

You would think the guy would sit on a offspeed pitch.

  110. Jedile says:

So do we lead the league in strike outs? it sure feels that way.

  111. Cuso says:

Stuart a’s family at the game?

  112. Joe says:

    Second deck please.

  113. Dan in Athens says:

    Over/under – end of 2014 – ARod has 700 HRs?

  114. Cuso says:

They didn’t boo Granderson as hard….notice that?

  115. The Real Greg says:

Ricky Romero has had 2 out of 3 good starts against the Yankees and lost them both. In the first one he gave up only 3 runs but their bullpen imploded and in the second one he gave 2 runs but got outpitched by Phil Hughes.

  116. God is this becoming an annoying game.

  117. Effthisnoise says:

Wow, yanks making Romero look like a world beater

  118. The Real Greg says:

Romero is either going to get a ND or he’s going to lose this game because that’s the way his year has gone.

  119. Mike N says:

Phelps was (I assume he’s done) outstanding!

    Howdy, peeps!

  120. Cuso says:

I actually like the booing. Not because it’s deserved, but …..

because it’s nice to hear NOISE at YS3. It seems like the acoustics were an element that didn’t come over to the new park in 2009.

It’s an element of the intimidation factor that’s missing at the new Stadium. The 2009 team won because it was just that good. Mystique and aura always played a role before 2008. Decibels please!

  121. Phelps has done his job.

Get that man some runs, and a W.

  122. Pat D says:

Damn that Canadian interloper. Does his treachery know no bounds?

  123. So apparently Ichiro found the same Time Machine Derek did in June last year.

  124. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Ichiro is [insert Japanese term for en fuego]

  125. Effthisnoise says:

Too bad he’s bating between Mcgehee and stewart

  126. Cuso says:

Aw man, ChRISPy is trying sooo hard!

  127. Tom says:

Stewart needs to concentrate on hitting it softly and letting the BABIP Gods take over for him

  128. Erica says:

    I kid

This is glorious. Bring him home Stewartilicious.

  129. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    He walked Chris Stewart.
Captain, you must make him pay.

  130. Tony says:

thats just about the worst thing you can do as a pitcher. he should be demoted immediately for walking stewart

  131. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Fuck Steve Harvey.

  132. JobaWockeeZ says:

    On the first pitch too.

  133. RkyMtnYank says:

Ichiro should have stolen home too.

  134. your mom says:

    Good job Cap!

  135. Erica says:

Oh so nobody’s gonna boo Jeter? Clearly I wouldn’t, but…double standards.

  136. 7 H, 5 BB – 12 baserunners in six innings.

One run to show for it.

  137. The Real Greg says:

Can we really complain about Jeter swinging on the first pitch since he has been so successful with it this year?

  138. ArchStanton says:

Love Jeter, but his swinging on the first pitch after a walk never seems to work. I’m probably wrong, but that’s how it feels.

  139. Laz says:

13 baserunners in 6 innings and they can only manage 1 run?

  140. Mike N says:

I’m surprised Phelps is still in.

  141. Nice Scheister says:

DFA Jeter, then throw him a parade for his 200th hit…..he’s done

  142. mt says:

Romero also shut us down basically the last time in New York , although we won – so frustrating that this offense cannot score.

  143. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I’m thinking Jeter may not be ready to play SS yet.

  144. Pat D says:

    JFC Cap’n Jeets.

  145. The Real Greg says:

Its strange. The Yankees, I believe, are third in the AL in runs scored. And yet they have struggled with RISP all season.

  146. Nice Scheister says:

    I miss…..Nunez at short?

  147. No two-out RISP hits for the Jays here.

    That would be painful.

  148. bus time gentleman and fair lady, see you all on the otherside.

  149. Chilango says:

    One more batter. C’mon Phelps!

  150. Pat D says:

I suspect this is it for him.

  151. Nice Scheister says:

Cano would’ve made it look routine.

  152. Erica says:

    Awesome job, Phelpsy!

  153. Cuso says:

Phelps has pitched great, but he shouldn’t have been left in to face Echeverria. And I was thinking that before he even threw ball 1.

It just took that long for my damn page to load

  154. Phelps did his job tonight.

It would be a crime if he got an L for this.

  155. Defensive Indifference says:

Who wants a delicious cookie? How about you Mr. Logan?

  156. Allie says:

Oh my Christ, I’m not sure if I’d rather have Boone or Phelps pitching for this last out right now…either way, I need a Xanax. Or a drink. Or five drinks.

  157. Nice Scheister says:

So um, did anyone catch the terrible series finale of Weeds? I’d have preferred the Sopranos ending.

  158. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Good Loogy.

    Runs please.

  159. Hummingbird S. says:

    good job Boone

  160. Chilango says:

  161. your mom says:

I feel better with Boone facing righties than lefties.

  162. Cuso says:

Ball was hit hard. We got away with one there. Bringing in Boone Logan with bases loaded is a tactic Girardi cannot get away with twice in a row. Better tighten up decision-making before we face Oakland.

  163. JobaWockeeZ says:

    My ears are bleeding.

  164. Effthisnoise says:

C’mon boys lets get some runs before clueless joe uses 8 pitchers and some fans from the stands to get 6 outs

  165. Mike N says:

I love Jose Feliciano. His version of Light My Fire is better than the Doors.

  166. Nice Scheister says:

I cheated, I checked pitch by pitch since the pressure got to be too much. (Theres a small lag from to PS3/360 broadcast)

  167. Hummingbird S. says:

that FB is pretty straight… I hope someone can hit that

  168. TomH says:

Learn to throw the change-up and become a Yankee-killer.

  169. jjyank says:

Oh man I am fading fast…so not used to waking up at 4 AM. Please finish this game soon.

  170. TomH says:

    Now ARod vs Change-up

  171. The Angry Troll says:

C’mon offense! You’ve no excuse for F*CKING SUCKING!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  172. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Boo everyone you idiots.

  173. TomH says:

    As I was saying….

  174. Morbid offense today.

5 runs in 15 innings. More-so, 2 runs in the last 14 innings.

  175. Hummingbird S. says:

heckuva day for Alex.. this offense sucks

  176. The Real Greg says:

    Crowd going to get pitchforks.

  177. Effthisnoise says:

Man, how is this Toronto tean not in first place? Oh yeah they don’t get to play the yanks 162 gams

    • TomH says:

Better watch out for them in the future. It’s a pretty good team when the Injury God isn’t striking down their rotation and their best hitter. From what I read, their minor league system is pretty decent too.

In any case, they often rise to the occasion against NY.

  178. The Angry Troll says:

I thought the Jays were suckin’ major donkey D? What happened? Is this offense going to forever be in a miserable rut? Me no can stands this!!!!!

  179. your mom says:

    Fuck. this. offense.

  180. Cuso says:

food for thought: Jeter is going to hit a homerun for every million dollars he makes this year

A-Rod is going to hit a homerun for every $2 million he makes this year

    • Chilango says:

Which is part of the reason he gets booed so often. He’s an underperforming player who we’re stuck with for 6 more years. Age and PED have taken their toll on his body so he’ll probably spend a ,ot of time on the DL, or swinging at off speed stuff on the dirt.

  181. The Angry Troll says:

Can someone please regurgitate that statistic about the Yankee’s unwillingness to win or rally past the 8th inning? Might as well prepare for the worst when the worst is to be expected.

  182. Effthisnoise says:

Logan, you have been way too effective, time for you to sit.

    • TomH says:

I hope they have someone on the training staff who can re-attach his arm when it finally falls off.

    • TomH says:

The Yanks ought to send someone down to Mexico to find Edwar Ramirez and bring him back to throw bp change-ups and to teach the pitch to their youth corps. I’m only half-kidding.

  183. The Angry Troll says:

Oh. Just in time to see Cody blow the game. HOLLA!

  184. Tom says:

Not a fan of this move with Lind on deck.

If Lowrie gets on, Girardi will likely go to Rapada, and then Farrell will punch hit for him (and Girardi will be stuck in a Rapada vs righty situation)

I know Logan vs Lowrie is not ideal, but with the pen already short…

  185. The Angry Troll says:

  186. Anthony says:

I don’t know why but it feels like we played the Jays way more than any other team this season.

  187. Dan in Athens says:

Boone, nice fucking job big man.

  188. How about some runs NOW?

Especially since this team doesn’t win with walk-offs.

  189. WhittakerWalt says:

Booing A-Rod is such low rent crap from you, Yankees fans.

    • jjyank says:

Yeah. He’s the easy mass-target, but he’s been hitting well of late, today notwithstanding.

    • Mike Axisa says:

They didn’t stop booing him after 2009, they never will. He’s an easy target and everyone would rather cater to the lowest common denominator than think a little.

      • Chilango says:

You have a point and he has been hitting well since he came off the DL but I guess when you make the superstar bucks and get the superstar hype, then the fans expect superstar performance. Even if they shouldn’t. So I’m not losing any sleep over him getting booed. And either is he, so it’s all good.

  190. Tom says:

    Curtis going deep here…

  191. jjyank says:

    *check stash*

Hm, do I have ROOGY cookies?

    *checks again*

YES! I have a couple! Here ya go Cody!

  192. The Angry Troll says:

I’m confused . . . Has this reliever been in to face 4 batters thus far? Lefties AND righties? How . . . but . . . wait, how is this possible?

  193. There’s a baserunner.

    Let him touch home plate.

  194. Mike N says:

    Bring home the leadoff walk!!!!!!!!!!!!

  195. The Real Greg says:

Why not bunt? Manufacture a run since you have failed with RISP. And you can get Ichiro up.

  196. jjyank says:

Wow, Soriano up in the pen after a 4 out save earlier today?

  197. The Angry Troll says:

OMG!!! Someone castrate Girardi IMMEDIATELY! AHH!!!!!! BLARGH!!!!! MIFF!!!!!! POOOOOOONNNNTANG!

  198. Cy Pettitte says:

    send up Nunie please.

  199. Tom says:

I assume he will pinch hit for Ibanez here?

  200. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I’d much rather see Eduardo here.

  201. Mike N says:

    YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome steal of third!!!!

  202. Mike N says:

    C’mon, Pearce!!!!!

  203. Dan in Athens says:

Curtis = ACDC, “I’ve got big balls, We’ve got big balls, we’ve got the biggest balls of them all.”

  204. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Of course.

  205. The Angry Troll says:

Just hit it in the air you jack ass. JUST DO IT!

  206. Of course Pearce couldn’t get it done.

  207. Cy Pettitte says:

I really don’t understand how you justify Pearce over Nunez

  208. teddy says:

    pathetic, is pointless

  209. Mike N says:

    Please, ICHIRO!

  210. Dan in Athens says:

Ichiro, only you can wipe away the stain on the honor of our inept RH bench.

  211. The Real Greg says:

  212. TomH says:

Well, Ichiro may have used up his probabilities for the day.

  213. Mike N says:

    HELLZ TO THE MOTHERFUCKING YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  214. yo says:

  215. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Way to bail out your teammates (and manager).

  216. Have yourself a day Ichiro!

  217. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Ichiro = True Yankee

  218. CUYanks says:

Would you still prefer Dickerson, Mike?

  219. RetroRob says:

    Ichiro, hero of the day!

  220. Cy Pettitte says:

Ichiro! what got into him? I like it.

  221. The Angry Troll says:

Welcome back, Ichiro! Please stick around for the next month and a half. PLEASE!

  222. The Real Greg says:

Is that the great Dewayne Wise out there?

  223. Tom says:

    Ichiro 7 for 8 today? (with 2 SB’s)

  224. EDDARD says:

I stepped out for dinner an hour and a half ago. How are my guys, Ichiro and Big Game Dave Pehlps doing?

  225. dalelama says:

Nice to see our $25M per year Punch ‘n’ Judy hitter doing his best Mama Cass impersonation again.

  226. Lind-Mathis-Johnson

Whoever pitches the 9th – just do it successfully.

  227. Hummingbird S. says:

  228. flamingo says:

    I don’t believe it. ICHIRO.

  229. Robinson Tilapia says:

This is why you don’t throw the vets at the side of the curb come the stretch run. ICHIRO!

    Oh, hi everyone.

  230. Herby says:

Sure bailed Girardi out of another lame managerial move…

  231. Cy Pettitte says:

why is Freddy up? are they expecting to score 9 more runs this inning?

  232. EDDARD says:

Who is closing tonight, Jobber? Garcia? Ichiro?

  233. Nice Scheister says:

  234. RetroRob says:

    Your point being, Mike?

  235. EDDARD says:

Ichiro with 7 hits in one day, Andruw with 9 in one day. Yeah, Ichiro shouldn’t be the every day left fielder.

  236. Mike N says:

Ichiro better be the goddamn POTG!!!!!!!!

  237. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Wait. Why is Chris Stewart hitting for himself?

  238. Leg-End says:

    Ichiro is unplayable right now.

  239. Tom says:

Ichiro on fire…. Stewart should take 2 more pitches so he can steal 3rd and then home.

  240. Defensive Indifference says:

    Can Ichiro pitch the 9th?

  241. MartinRanger says:

this is unbelievable. I love it.

  242. Ichiro is freaking nuts right now.

  243. Jack says:

I like this Ichiro fella. I like the cut of his jib.

  244. Mike N says:

    HAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!! WOO!!!!

  245. RetroRob says:

That was not a good percentage play, Ichi.

  246. Ichiro: True Yankee(TM)??

bang bang there…I think he caught a break.

  247. EDDARD says:

I’ve said it 50 times and I’ll say it again, if Ichiro isn’t the greatest midseason trade Cashman has ever made I don’t know who is.

  248. The Real Greg says:

I dare Ichiro to try and steal home

  249. Nice Scheister says:

    Ichiro is my Hiro!

  250. Nice Scheister says:

He saved the 1st game with his glorious catch and put them ahead with Trout like numbers tonight. WOWZA!

  251. Chilango says:

    Jeter gets the call. wow

  252. EDDARD says:

He called that pitch strike 2 and then called it ball 4. Inconsistent.

  253. Anthony says:

The last time someone played great in a doubleheader it was Andruw against the Sox. Hasn’t done anything since. Hope Ichiro doesn’t fade into nothingness after tonight!

  254. Jeter may have just convinced the ump it was a ball by just heading to first.

  255. flamingo says:

A hit of some sort would be nice here.

Or Ichiro stealing home. That would be nice, too.

  256. RkyMtnYank says:

    Wow, Jeter rep’d one there.

  257. Chilango says:

    WOW. Break for us.

  258. Stratman9652 says:

Love it when they catch people swearing and then try to tell you they said something else.

  259. Scotty B. says:

This is about as fun as a one-run inning (so far) can be.

  260. Nice Scheister says:

That was off the plate, not “horse shit”, Mr. Ferrell.

  261. Cuso says:

Captain got two very generous calls that AB. Better capitalize….oh wait it’s Swisher. Almost forgot.

  262. JobaWockeeZ says:

    No one boos that?

  263. But this inning would not end without more RISPFAIL.

Lets hope those stranded runs don’t haunt this team in the 9th.

  264. RkyMtnYank says:

Think pitchers have figured out that you never throw Swisher a fastball, ever.

  265. WhittakerWalt says:

    Swisher goddammit.

  266. The Real Greg says:

So with all the failures with RISP, they are 3 outs away from winning the game and sweeping the doubleheader, which is very hard to do, if the statistics are correct.

  267. EDDARD says:

Ichiro Suzuki, Raphael Soriano, Andy and Big Game Dave Phelps gave it their all in these two games. 7 hits, 4 SBs, 2 saves, 1 W and two big game pitching performances. That’s quite a day for these four men if Soriano can close it out here.

  268. Hummingbird S. says:

what a surprise… Swisher chokes with the pressure on. Three whiffs on 3 identical pitches. Fucking pathetic, as usual.

  269. Nice Scheister says:

Swisher needs to pretend its garbage time, all the time.

  270. Chilango says:

Did they boo Swisher? I fuckin did.

  271. So, Raffy tries it again.

Lets hope he’s as sharp here as he was this afternoon.

  272. your mom says:

I guess they are expecting MFIKY to opt out. Why else would they try to mess up his arm like this?

  273. Dan in Athens says:

Rafael bidding for hero of the day. This afternoon’s escape job and possibly holding a one run lead here could even eclipse Ichiro 2004′s cameo.

  274. Trying to get 8 outs out of Soriano today..even w/ two straight days off he’s probably not going to be available tomorrow, and possibly the next day.

  275. Matt says:

It’s getting predictable at this point. You can see that teams are pitching extra carefully to Jeter with first base open because they know that Swisher will get himself out in these spots.

Any pitcher with a decent offspeed pitch can get Swisher to screw himself into the ground trying to hit a grand slam. He doesn’t even have to set it up with a fastball. Swisher never stops sitting fastball.

  276. Tony says:

That scared the shit out of me

  277. No complaints about Joe at all for his BP management.

Just saying this could easily blow up in all of our faces. Always risky to pitch someone twice on one day.

One out, so far so good. Two more, Raffy.

  278. EDDARD says:

One out away from 2 untucks in one day.

  279. RetroRob says:

Soriano looks better in this game then he did in game one…so far.

  280. Joe says:

  281. that nearly hit Soriano…not nearly as close as i thought though.

  282. Mike N says:

Did I really hear boos that A-Rod didn’t catch that ball?

  283. RetroRob says:

    I Kill You Twice!

  284. Dan in Athens says:

Who would have thought Soriano would end up being worth every penny? In keeping with the legacy of Wetteland, I commend you sir.

  285. Mike N says:

    YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  286. MFIKY

    Untuck that motherfucker

  287. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    untuck bitches

  288. jay says:

  289. Erica says:

    Ichi, you can UNTUCK too!

  290. Chilango says:

Definition of clutch. STEP UP AND UNTUCK.

  291. Joe says:

  292. Tom says:

MFIKY… 2 stress free 9th innings. Well done sir, take the rest of the night off!

  293. Robinson Tilapia says:

Now THIS is getting the job done. A GREAT day for Yankee baseball. Get it done tonight, King Felix.

    • RetroRob says:

Speaking of which, now I need to decide it I will watch that game as I was part of the merry few in last night’s game thread/open thread with the game to 4am! Feel surprisingly good.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

I’d say “those days are long behind me,” but I think you’re actually older than me.

Someone needs to be the night watchman around here. It might as well be you.

        • Jack says:

          Who watches the watcher?

        • RetroRob says:

I am as I’m in my 40s and have a college-aged child, meaning the nights have having a fussy child waking me are gone. My job also requires me to work funky hours for some international clients, which means I’m awake (and asleep) and some very weird hours. What I have discovered is seven hours of sleep is great, but it doesn’t have to be in a row!

  294. flamingo says:

  295. EDDARD says:

We’ve done our job to restore our 1 game lead over the Os. Now King Felix needs to do his.

  296. Nice Scheister says:

  297. Anthony says:

Awesome day. Lets hope Felix handles the O’s.

  298. Thanks for the two saves, MFIKY.

    Fantasy team appreciates.

  299. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

    Awesome. Time to watch Felix.

  300. Hummingbird S. says:

It wasn’t pretty, but they got the job done today.

  301. jjyank says:

Untuck. Goodnight, RAB. I’m running on about 8 hours of sleep in 2 days, so I’m crashing. Great day of baseball. A bit stressful, but I’m not going to bitch about 2 wins in a day at all.

    Go Seattle!

    • Joe says:

I’m running on four hours sleep from last night. I’m out too RAB!

      I love this site.

    • EDDARD says:

Good work today. Get some rest, you deserve it. I’ll keep an eye out on the Os game for you and we’ll be back ready to go tomorrow as King Phillip goes for the series sweep.

  302. Robinson Tilapia says:

I missed some gems in this thread.

  303. Don’t look now – that’s six of seven, and four in a row for the Yankees.

Hopefully they are peaking at the right time.

  304. MartinRanger says:

So the Yankees won two games.

And did not hit a single home run.

    Isn’t that interesting?

    • EDDARD says:

And they won two consecutive games all in one day, something they failed to do for a month until the Boston series. With Andy back all we need is to get Teix back and get CC on track and we’ll be firing on all cylinders again.

  305. Stratman9652 says:

Untuck, change jersey, Untuck again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

  306. Erica says:

What station is the King Felix/O’s game on? ESPN is showing the Rangers/Angels.

  307. Fin says:

Man, Boston is bad, I saw them winning 3-1 in the 4th and next time i look they are loosing 13-3.

  308. Dave M says:

Soriano is going to need the rest of the week off after getting 7 outs in the same day. Isn’t this the same guy who couldn’t pitch back to back days prior to this year?

  309. Robinson Tilapia says:

My wife was once looking over client questionnaires when she was in a research position for a non-profit. The questionnaires asked for medical information which included whether you’d ever contracted an STD, and where you received treatment for it.

She once found a questionnaire that read like this:

Have you ever been treated for an STD? Yes
    Where? Genitals.

  310. Rocky Road Redemption says:

My arbitrary definition, just because it’s a nice sounding number, for “going on a run” is five wins in a row. That’s when you can talk about your winning streak as if it matters.

One more win, boys. Let’s get this train rolling.

  311. captain kiwi says:

dammit. i thought i got off work early enough to catch the game. no matter, 2 wins in 1 day is a few shades of sexy. and if i had wheels like ichiro i’d car, for crying out loud. good form ichi, good form.

  312. EDDARD says:

If King Felix is going to win it’s going to have to be 1-0. Even Joe Saunders can shut this lineup down.

  313. Robinson Tilapia says:

Is this the longest a game thread has ever gone post-game? We must be happy tonight.

  314. EDDARD says:

Fuck Mark Reynolds. 1-0 Os and that’ll be all Joe Saunders needs.

  315. yo says:

    orioles scored… that games over

  316. Robinson Tilapia says:

Looking back on tonight’s TSJC homage…..remember when people were convinced he’d come back as Stairs?

  317. Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW) says:

Stewart is embarrassing in his faux-Affliction shirt.
The only thing douchier than an Affliction shirt is a fake Affliction shirt.

  318. Ugh..I want to stay up to date w/ the O’s game, and the easiest way to do that is MLB Tonight…but I cannot stand Harold Reynolds anymore.

  319. RetroRob says:

    HR. Tie score.

  320. Get Phelps Up says:

Gutierrez ties up the O’s at 1!

  321. jjyank says:

Tilapia, Plouffy, you guys are fucking weird. In a good way though. Just read a few comments above because me adrenaline is not letting me sleep, despite a desperate need for it. Take that as a compliment. I’m weird too. Got a good chuckle out of what’s going on up above.

  322. forensic says:

Geez Guti (as they annoyingly call him in Seattle), where was that last night???

  323. captain kiwi says:

mariners hitting saunders hard, just right at defenders. and eat nuts mcclouth.

  324. RetroRob says:

M’s had 17 1/3 scorless innings until that HR, and I saw too much of that last night.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

I watched all 18 innings last night. I really paid for it this morning.

      • captain kiwi says:

        troopers, the both of ye.

        • RetroRob says:

Really was not the intention. I tuned in at the end to watch the end. Yet once it was tied, the game always seemed minutes away from ending…then hours went by.

      • forensic says:

By the time I went to sleep after the game, it didn’t even feel like I slept when I woke up.

Luckily, I usually do pretty well without much sleep and only felt it a little bit right after eating lunch, which always makes me want to nap.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Yeah, but you’re on the west coast, aren’t you?

          • forensic says:

Yeah, but get up very early on my work days. Went to sleep at about 1:30 and got up at 4:30. I finally had a day without training anyone today though, so I knew it’d be pretty relaxed for me and I was intent on enjoying the night as long as I could.

        • RetroRob says:

I went to bed at 4am. Got up at 9am. Drove to a meeting at 10, came back at 1:30 and have been watching Yankees all day and now O’s again. I feel like non-stop baseball for the past day.

  325. The Real Greg says:

This rangers Angels game is big too because if the Angels lose the wild card difference increases with the Rays also wilting down the stretch.

  326. RetroRob says:

Come on, M’s. A run. Get a run.

  327. Jack says:

    This one’s going 19.

  328. Herby says:

hope it’s managed better than last nights game…three crappy sacrifice bunts with men on 1st but when you get a lead off double they don’t even attempt it.
