Game 148: Let’s Play Two

The Yankees took care of business this afternoon and won the first game of today’s doubleheader behind the returning Andy Pettitte, and now they’ll try to win Game Two behind shortstop Derek Jeter. The Cap’n will be playing the field for the first time in exactly a week, since he came down hard on his left ankle running out a ground ball and aggravated the bone bruise he’s been nursing for a few weeks. Here’s the starting nine…

I am too, but I dislike double headers. They seem to end up being split more often than not, and I remember some study on this that pretty showed they were split more often than they should be based on team records.
Well the lineup that the yankees put forward sucks. Day lineup was fine, but mcgehee, nix, and stewart….
You really have to hope that Phelps can give 6 or 7 IP, otherwise its Freddy time.
Girardi used every reliever and their brother in the first game so it’s up to Big Game Dave Phelps to give us another big game just as he did in Boston. A lot of pressure on the kid but he didn’t get the name Big Game Dave Phelps for nothing.

Agreed. Ichiro had 2 hits and the game saving catch in the first game. Andruw hasn’t done that much in 3 months. Raul either. Ichiro should be our everyday left fielder once Teix returns.
Correction: Ichiro had 3 hits! His avg is up to .272. Andruw is hitting a robust .197 , Ibanez a healthy .222

They moved the rest of the starters back a day due to the rainout. It was either have the fill in starter(Phelps) pitch vs the depleted Jays or vs the playoff bound As.

It goes against my instincts and sabermetric leanings, but I say he does it again.
Yeah, I’m not willing to bet against another one at this point. I’d say the odds are against it, but I still think it’ll happen.
Of course. Odds are most certainly against it, but Jeter might just the be legendary-type player that we tell our kids about that can buck the trend.
As long as his BAbip remains the same (HIGH BAbip, similar to what Ichiro did in his prime and what AJax does), there is a good chance he at least gets 186-190 in any of the next two seasons.
He’s always had a high BABIP for his career. It’s a function of hitting lots of line drives to the opposite field, and that other trait he has of hitting weak ground balls, many of which end up hits. The only time his BABIP sunk was from 2010 to mid-2011.
The odds are against it due to his age. Yet he’s an outlier, so hard to bet against him at the moment. He is not going to be taken out of the lead-off spot for now and he’s durable, so he might do it again.

He had an RBI. That’s what he’s payed to do. Drive in runs.
He hit a ground ball with runners on second and third. He’s getting paid to do a lot more than that. As is everyone else. But you already know that. An RBI ground out doesn’t come close to cancelling out 6 outs in 4 PA’s.

When I was in college I worked in a shipping area where we had to sort mail. The guy working with me had a letter from Nebraska and wanted to know if Nebraska was located in Europe. They are guessing location based on the naked eye plus the camera angle they have. Just because it is one source of information, it does not mean that it’s credible in that context.

Phelps is attacking the lineup. He is making good pitches. They just put together some good AB’s on him in the 2nd.
The real issue is that they let a huge opportunity slip away in the first. The kind that if you capitalize, Toronto basically packs it in and hands you a win. The offense rarely does its job, and it puts a lot more pressure on the pitching staff to be perfect with every pitch.

Not a number 3 hitter, but Nettles is a borderline HOF’er whose main attribute was to hit home runs and play good defense, in a way like Cano.
Again the job of the #3 hitter in the lineup is not simply to move a runner 90 feet in the FIRST inning.
Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson were not “doing their jobs” moving people 90 feet back then, just like Cano is not doing his job.

It’s an element of the intimidation factor that’s missing at the new Stadium. The 2009 team won because it was just that good. Mystique and aura always played a role before 2008. Decibels please!
I think that’s the trade off to having elbow room and open concourses. The sound doesn’t reverb as much as it used to.

I guess that shows I don’t know enough about reggae. I’ve always thought reggae to be primarily light and bouncy, so it’s hard to hear a reggae version of something that’s pretty dark in nature.
I also equate reggae with summertime, and since summer has slipped away, I don’t much like listening to reggae.

It’s getting predictable at this point. You can see that teams are pitching extra carefully to Jeter with first base open because they know that Swisher will get himself out in these spots.
Any pitcher with a decent offspeed pitch can get Swisher to screw himself into the ground trying to hit a grand slam. He doesn’t even have to set it up with a fastball. Swisher never stops sitting fastball.

I am as I’m in my 40s and have a college-aged child, meaning the nights have having a fussy child waking me are gone. My job also requires me to work funky hours for some international clients, which means I’m awake (and asleep) and some very weird hours. What I have discovered is seven hours of sleep is great, but it doesn’t have to be in a row!
I especially need my beauty sleep because of my waking child.

Really was not the intention. I tuned in at the end to watch the end. Yet once it was tied, the game always seemed minutes away from ending…then hours went by.
By the time I went to sleep after the game, it didn’t even feel like I slept when I woke up.
Luckily, I usually do pretty well without much sleep and only felt it a little bit right after eating lunch, which always makes me want to nap.

Yeah, but get up very early on my work days. Went to sleep at about 1:30 and got up at 4:30. I finally had a day without training anyone today though, so I knew it’d be pretty relaxed for me and I was intent on enjoying the night as long as I could.
I went to bed at 4am. Got up at 9am. Drove to a meeting at 10, came back at 1:30 and have been watching Yankees all day and now O’s again. I feel like non-stop baseball for the past day.
