Game 149: For The Sweep
ByIt’s been a long time since the Yankees last swept a three-game series, which is something they have a chance to do tonight. You have to go all the way back to the second series after the All-Star break, which coincidentally came against the Blue Jays in Yankee Stadium. Hooray for history repeating itself. Here’s the starting nine…
SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
DH Alex Rodriguez
C Russell Martin
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Casey McGehee
LF Ichiro Suzuki
3B Jayson Nix
RHP Phil Hughes
Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Time to change the magic number from Pinella to Arod, even to Boggs if we’re lucky.
Orioles aren’t playing today, so Boggs will have to wait until tomorrow.
Doh!
Mike accidentally posted the Recap thread just now, but removed it before I could post my comment:
“Sweet win. I especially enjoyed the part when A-rod mouthed “That one was for you, stuart a” after hitting the game-winning grand slam in the 9th.”
I can’t wait for the post-game parade. Ike Davis will be the grand marshal.
Hahaha. We should send A-Rod fake fan mail signed by stuart.
dear arod….
you suck…what a joke….why are you all punch and judy….
youve been ok since the dl…..i guess….great..lets throw you a parade….and a raise…
….
…..
love……stuart a
…..ike davis…..rbis…..
So how did Hughes pitch?
From what I saw, I’m my cyrstal ball, Hughes went six strong, two earned runs (three allowed, one on a Nick Swisher throwing error). Yanks bats comes alive in the 4th as Ichrio led off with a double, stole third and scored when they threw the ball away. Then Jeter blooped one after Nix grounded out to the SS, Swisher walked and A-Rod hit a three run BOMB after Cano struck out on the same pitch three times in a row, all in the dirt. In the fifth Grandy hit a two run bomb after a Martin walk, on five pitches. A 5-3 Yankees win with Lowe and Robertson filling in the pitching gap after Hughes tips his cap for a job well done.
*in my crystal ball, I love the iPads predictive text
Today was a good day. Anyone know the feeling when they have a nice, easy day at work that leads to closing up a bit earlier than usual? And then because of that, your train pulls into the metro (or subway, for you NY folk) JUST as you walk down the stairs. Ah the little things in life. A Yankee win would push it over the top
Also the game is on MLBN, so not MLB.TV delay for me today. That’s nice as well, since you all can’t spoil plays for me!
we all have finite luck; don’t piss it away on transportation else you’ll never win at blackjack. or bang a supermodel.
A Casey McGehee sighting two days in a row?! Someone musta forgot to lock him back in whatever closet he’s been stuck in since he was traded.
John Smoltz is saying all sorts of positive things about the Yankees right now…somebody throw water on me or something, I am surely dreaming.
I brought this up this morning, but I figure I can get a better reaction here for how people feel about it, When I was watching MLBN last night to keep updated with the O’s/M’s game they where showing Highlights of the Dodgers Nationals game, a game that was ultimately decided by one run in favor of the Dodgers. One of the runs the Dodgers scored was on a play where the third baseman tagged a runner coming at third before Kemp crossed home plate(With 2 outs). The Dodgers were awarded the run after the Umpires got together and realized that none of them were paying any attention to when Kemp crossed home, however if the MLB would allow instant replay on scoring plays there was a perfect angle from home plate up the third base line that clearly showed the out made with Kemp still about 10 feet from the plate. I’m sorry but that is down right inexcusable to allow that run to score when everybody but the 4 umpires knew that it shouldn’t.
Just more evidence that MLB needs more replay and umps are dumb.
I didn’t see that myself, but I see absolutely no reason to not have instant replay for any play, except perhaps balls and strikes. Though I wouldn’t be against that per se either, just the one area I am filling to concede something.
Umpires are even in favor of it from what I have read. Hell, put a 5th umpire up in the booth and he can make a call down to the crew chief in events like that in order to speed up the replay process.
But…but…there’s no appettite for instant replay! Selig said so!
Seriously though, it’s terrible. I find it hard to believe with all the TV angles, wifi and increasingly smaller tablets that they can’t find a way to stream a video feed to the umps on the field in less than 5 minutes to get the call right. Hell, even a hockey-like war room would work.
Haha, I love the handle, but you’re posting in a way that clearly state’s I’ve been here before. Did you used to post under another handle?
Haha thank you sir. The handle’s pretty much my only literary bright spot. I don’t think I’ve used a different handle. I’m usually at work when I post so they’re not too frequent, but I tend to read the comments so I probably stole someone else’s style.
Not saying you’re biting anybody’s style, just that your posts come across in an aloof yet assertive style, with some sarcasm. I totally approve.
Thanks! I’ll try to keep it up.
They need to have a 5th “replay” umpire in the press box and whenever there’s a questionable call on the field, the crew chief can radio up to him and get confirmation weather the call was right or wrong. Simple as that.
Yep, that was my suggestion I made above too. Adds more jobs for umps (so the union should back it strongly) and speeds up the replay review process.
Seriously, all you have to do is give him the feed from all the cameras in the ball park into his booth and if he needs to access a replay he just picks that screen and rewinds it.
I agree.
Aw crap, Edwin Encarnacion’s playing
94 mph! I have not seen that from Hughes in awhile
here’s hoping hughes keeps pitching like a #3.
Aaron Loofe looks like he’s about 15 in his thumbnail picture.
Laffey*
The loofah keeps the skin looking young.
Freudian slip. You meant to say Plouffe.
The Plouffinator is dead. =P
Never. Unless you get a handle that I like referring to you as. But as long as you’ve got this one, you’re still either Plouffe, Plouffy, Plouffinator, Plouffster, Plouffmeister, Ploufferz, or Plouffers.
What if I just used my name? I was actually thinking about that today, if I disconnected my blog, changed my name to just my name and continued posting like I always did. The only person that would really know is Mike, because he can check accounts, I wondered how long it would take for you guys to realize. I would think You, Havok, and R-Tils would be the first to realize it.
Like your real name? Just first name, or first and last? Of course we’d be the first to realize it, we’r the only 3 that know your name
just my first. The last name on Facebook isn’t even my proper surname. I changed it freshman year of college after an older friend got turned down for a job because the potential employer found his facebook by typing in his name…and there where some photos there that shouldn’t have been.
Gotcha. And yeah, we’d figure it out. I think everyone would. First post about John and Suzyn, or taking a bus, and you’d be busted.
I thought that through, for as long as possible I’d do my best to try to abstain from either.
I don’t think you can abstain from John and Suzyn posts haha
Sneaky, sneaky.
It would’ve been interesting to see how long you could pull it off.
We would know it’s him because he’s the only one in pursuit of a FIP.
You’re right. His FIPness would shine through his new handle.
It’s amazing how many liners Jeter hits to right that end up getting caught.
I’d rather see that than groundballs to the infield, any day.
Did…did Cano really just try to bunt?
He was trying to beat the shift.
I know what he was trying to do. I just don’t think I’ve ever seen him try to bunt before.
Sorry, I didn’t mean that to be demeaning. I was agreeing with you.
With 2 out and noone on base?
That’s got to be just about the dumbest time to try it.
I’m not disagreeing with you. I was just pointing out why he did it.
I looked away for a second and thought “Hey, Nunez is tryin to bunt for hit” then Kay said Cano and now my office knows many more curse words than they did 5 minutes ago.
Robbie bunting for a base hit? Wow,
That ball curved a lot in the air.
My favorite part of the day game yesterday: there was no scoreboard because they were the only game playing, so Suzyn spoke much less.
and boo!!! bad stuff!!!!!!
Fuuuuck. Settle down Phil.
I’m counting that as a reason to do a shot.
Good a reason as any.
Phil Hughes not really good in his career against the Blue Jays.
4-5 with a 4.66
I feel like John is pronouncing Hechavarria wrong. He’s putting emphasis on and prolonging every single syllable so it sounds like he’s kind of yelling the name slowly.
I get the impression that he thinks he is pronouncing it correctly and everyone else is saying it wrong.
I think the emphasis should be on the “Var” – EcheVARria.
His is ECHE-A-VA(hold the a for a second)R-EEA
The Mets starting pitcher just started the game with:
Infield single
Bunt single
Single (run scores)
Single (run scores)
Single
Single (run scores)
Walk (run scores)
Reliever comes in
Pitching line:
0 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 5 ER (so far, responsible for 3 runners)
And then a HBP for a run
Sorry, that’s 4 ER initially and responsible for 3 runners on, and the 5th ER was when the relieving pitcher started things off with a run scoring HBP. Awesome.
Heh, his name is Hefner. Maybe his mind was elsewhere?
i saw his start with homeplate umpire guccione.
The Mets will be the Mets.
Francesa should be hilarious tomorrow.
mets. wtf. lol.
Yankees offense. WTF. LOL.
Aaron Laffey is the type of pitcher they struggle against. Soft tossing lefty that throws sinkers and a change? Give me Verlander any day.
Yeah soft tossing lefties are the bugaboos of a lot of teams, including Texas.
But I’m not just referring to today. The past few series they’ve been pitiful with RISP.
And have won games. So what does that tell you. 8-4 in their last 12.
That tells me the pitching has been good, the offense not so much (the past 3 series).
Really? I honestly don’t follow Texas close enough to know the type of pitcher they struggle against.
I read an article that said that
Look up soft tossing lefty on Google its the first link.
I’m not going to trust a blog-spot blog that doesn’t source anything.
It’s also, you know, the second inning.
Also, lol Mets.
Last time we faced Laffey as a starter, it took us til the 4th inning to get to him
somebody needs to remind the yankees theyre facing aaron laffey.
Hey guys anyone got any advice for a recent political science major. With this worthless degree i can’t find a job. Why was i dumb enough to ever think this piece of crap degree is anything but toilet paper.
If you’re serious, I have plenty of advice. But this reeks of troll bait.
Please share. But if your going to suggest McDonalds, i tried. That told me i needed “actual skills”.
Troll bait it is. Go away.
Law School.
Everyone but Granderson knows what pitch he is getting in a 2 strike count.
I don’t know about Swisher.
Granderson is most vulnerable to the lefty who junkballs it and throws pitches out of the zone. He’s actually got a better chance at David Price, who features mostly fastballs.
Balls out of the strike zone make Curtis’s eyes light up, for some reason.
So it could be a long day against Laffey.
But as the booth said, just like with Adam Dunn, strikeouts dont mean as much anymore to critics.
Dude…the booth is not gospel. You know who is in these booths? Micheal Kay who thinks Wins is the most important stat for a pitcher, and John Sterling who makes up things as he goes along.
He mentioned that he talked to a few scouts and baseball people, so he’s not coming up with this from his own head.
Which critics? I’m pretty sure most people, especially those who understand advanced stats, think strikeouts are very bad. If a certain approach means a hitter will strike out more but in exchange hit more homers, then it depends on the exact tradeoff, but that can be okay. But strikeouts themselves mean the same thing they ever did, which is something very bad.
They’re making a former LOOGY look like Cliff Lee.
Look at what the Red Sox have done against him.
1-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 4 starts pre and post trade.
The Red Sox suck. Who cares what they’ve done against Laffey?
You can’t help but talk about the Red Sox.
The Red Sox? You mean Dustin Pedroia, a shell of Jacoby Ellsbury, and a bunch of AAAA/AAA’ers?
In Fenway? When A Gon was there? Come on now.
They’ve only scored 8 fewer runs than the Yankees this season.
Maybe the second time thru the line-up will be better.
I hope so. It’s early and all but I thought they’d rough him up early.
Hey guys, I think it’s kind of important to point out that it’s the THIRD INNING.
I mean, seriously. We haven’t even gone through the full lineup yet. Wow, you all seem like you’re in a bad mood today.
I’m in a great mood, actually!
GAMES END IN THE THIRD INNING DUH
Only when the Yankees are losing though.
Yup. I can’t tell you how many times my dad has declared the game over in the 4th inning…and they go on to win anyway.
I’m just tired, and bored, and yeah kind of in a bad mood. I’m currently debating whether I should go tcsj on somebody tonight.
Do it. B
That would entertain me greatly.
Don’t know why there’s a B. silly iPad.
Looking to change your handle, eh Plouffy?
Can everyone just call him Plouffy until he changes it back?
I’ll drop your real name here =P it’s literally the only leverage I have (I have no leverage.)
I dropped my real name myself already, so yeah, no leverage
‘Atta boy, Rus.
Hugh could’ve had a DP Phil.
Gose ain’t no Ichiro…
Mike:
We want history to repeat itself tonight. We do not want history to repeat itself over the next four days.
As in – Yankees swept the Jays, then got swept by the A’s.
Let’s not see the A’s sweep the Yankees again this weekend.
“Jayson Nix always does something to help the team win.”
Cant blame him for that one though
I realize it was a tough play, but ball hit to infielder = out (in most cases).
no runs (yet) but this inning has been pretty brutal.
No two out shit Phil.
Please, spare us all.
Don’t do that Hughes. Strikes, outs, that sort of stuff. Get outta this.
Don’t Phuck it up
Are you effin kidding me?
Damn it Phil!!
Not cool Phil, not cool at all.
nix needs to make that play at 3rd
It was ruled a base hit. Not an error
You know what. Fuck it. I’m sick of your shit too Greg. You just go our of your way to try to start things sometimes. I’m not watching the game (because I’m stuck at work) so I cannot speak for this play in perticular but I cant count the number of times I’ve watched an official scorer call a play that should be made called a base hit(by popular opinion of fans, broadcasters, even the player who made the mistake). You just go out of your way to find people making the smallest negative comments and try to nettle them. And before you say people used to do it to you, no we didn’t. You would lament yankee losses like it was the end of the fucking world. A losing streak would have you questioning humanity, and we where just telling you to cheer the fuck up.
Jesus Christ, Phil.
Make the Blue Jays earn this run less.
What the hell, Phil?
Nice one Phil. Where’s the control gone? Don’t give up your obligatory HR here please.
this is almost as bad as watching a Dice-K inning.
DOH!!!
No command at all.
Yet he has 5 K’s. An interesting question.
That was a question?
Couldn’t think of the right word for it. Problem, Dilemma?
As your mom, I just wanted to make sure your grammar was correct.
Let’s go Phil. Get yer shit together.
It just ain’t Phil’s day and this offense is as inept as the Mariners right now.
You should actually watch some Mariners games.
Does it matter? It’s EddardWorld.
Man, what a weird inning. Come on Phil!
Praise Mo.
Man, ugly inning, but could have been worse. Can we please not let Laffey have a shut down inning?
Got lucky on that second called strike
Never been a Hughes fan. This is exactly the kind of performance that reminds why.
OMG ICHIRO
Ichiro!!!
I love this version of Ichiro.
ICHIIIII
Wow Ichiro!
Ichiro saves us again! One man wrecking crew.
Ichiro keeps ‘em coming.
yep. he gonna GO OFF.
Holy shit Ichiro is on fire!
Ichi has such a crazy swing. I love it.
Ichiro is unstoppable. wow.
This guy is on fire
That’s more than Andruw’s done in 3 months.
Ichiro with the POWAH. Crazy form.
Time for Sterling’s racist homer call for Ichiro!
What does he say?
“The Yankees Rising Sun says Sayonara!”
Because the defining quality of Ichiro’s life is that he’s from Japan? Couldn’t get a line about sumo wrestlers in there, too?
Awesome.
If Ichiro gets another hit today he will have in the last 3 games equaled Andruw’s hit total since the beginning of August I believe.
Does he move up in the line up? Glad to see Joe sit Andrew and go against the binder
Resign this old man! Goodbye Jones, Ibanez.
But what if he turns into Ibanez/Jones next year?
I think that gives Ichiro 1/2 the Yankee hits off Blue Jays pitching this series.
Nixy just gutted out a walk there. Bunt him over, Jete and let’s get him home.
Ichrio should have another two MAYBE three ABs, so if we hold them at 2 runs…we stand a chance!
Hit and run here?
Bronx Bunters strike again.
Really, really don’t like that bunt.
Seriously. Jeter is hitting over .320, but sure, just give away an out.
and an AL best .369 vs. LHP.
Erm. Sac bunt. Okay?
Don’t understand Jeter doing that.
He was trying to catch Lawrie by surprise and get on. But he didn’t get it past the pitcher.
Questionable move.
He’s done it his entire career…and I’ve never agreed with it.
Especially when he’s the best hitter on the team, and the players behind him are slumping, slumping, and just of the DL.
(Predictions for the New York Football Giants game tonight?)
I don’t know enough about the Panthers, and with the short week, I have zero idea what to expect tonight…my only prediction about the game is going to my friends house to watch it when I get out of work.
Haha woo!
I hope not having Hakeem Nicks doesn’t hurt them too bad tonight.
Uh okay. Back to Yankees speak
I didn’t even know Hakeem was out for the game…I’m starting to develop expectations (and they aren’t positive)
Expect positively!
Soriano throws a walk off touchdown in the fourth quater, climbs the field goal and untucks for the world to see.
HAHAHAHAHAH this should be the new meme.
Giants 27, Panthers 20
Both too close to take
First one wasn’t.
Absolutely, but honestly it’s location according to gameday tells me he probably wouldn’t have been able to get a piece of it…I don’t want to tip my cap to Laffey even for a single pitch, but that was a damn good pitch.
Both were Mussina-like pitches, clipping the corners
Comparing anything Laffey does to Mike Mussina is an insult to Moose’s ability.
Moose could start tomorrow against any team in baseball and would be twice as valuable as Laffey.
In terms of type of pitch. I;m not comparing their careers.
Swing the bat and that won’t happen, Swish. Those hit the corners.
Wow…the Pirates are back under .500
I’m shocked. As well as Awed.
/sarcasm
I didn’t buy into the “Pirates will make the post season” narrative, but finishing above .500 seemed possible. Still is, I guess.
Damn MLB.tv crapped out…shits starting to make this Italian angry!
Good God Swish, 2 K’s against Laffey? Really???
Sterling says it was a bad call. What’s the reality?
You believe Sterling?
No, that’s why I asked.
According to GameDay it was at the top of the zone on the inside corner.
Pitch f/x also had it in the zone.
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....8;s_type=7
(not sure which pitch is which, but he’s only called strikes on pitches in the zone)
The other added “bonus” of bunting…
No point in pitching to Cano once you fall behind. I’m surprised the 3-0 was even close.
Would anyone advise bunting Jeter with the anemic Swisher directly after him? 2 outs to bring the man home from second? GARGH!
No. Jeter did that himself
Damn, just missed that.
I’m confused. First there was The Troll, then The Angry Troll, then The Laughing Troll, and now a The Angry Troll impersonator. Too many to keep track of.
They’ll turn to stone once the sun is up.
Your “Hobbit” reference does not go unappreciated.
Yeah, you’re telling me. Remember, we don’t like each other . . . . That’s how you can keep track.
‘sup.
Womppppp
ike davis wouldve gotten a hit……..
What is this mention of Ike Davis I keep seeing?
stuart a’s favorite player and he is exponentially better than all the Yankees combined.
Ahahahaha. Oh Stuart.
At least the pitch count is up. Yanks are going to get to him next time through, just need Phil to keep them close
ARod is having one helluva series so far.
Where’s stuart a?
Haven’t scrolled up yet. Let me guess:
- Hughes was sentenced to death several times
- Anyone swinging and missing against Aaron Laffey was sentenced to death
- Y’all REALLY didn’t like Jeter’s bunt
- Many variations on how Swisher and A-Rod can go fuck each other have been mentioned
Tea and Cake or Death?
/Eddy Izzard’d
I would very much not like to see the last point happen.
If somebody sent you a link with that as a title and you knew it wasn’t a virus you’d click it out of curiosity.
Man-on-centaur porn?
Need a recap of that one.
Reply to R-Tils. Failed. “Hide the” anything reminds me of this clip.
Mkay. Guess RAB is having a reply fail moment, not us.
Idk, my posts where grouping fine before…I posted a rant at greg the same moment you posted this?
Replay success of fail? This is a test.
Aaaand a failed test. Mike, help us out!
Mike must be deleting comments or something…that’s the only time a thread brakes like this.
It was a glitch in the Matrix.
LOL
Defensive catchers should be good at defense.
+the entire universe
That looked like a lazy mistake by Martin.
Yikes, Phil has to get 4 outs now?
DFA Martin
At this point in the season?
Now because our “defensive catcher” isn’t great defensively Hughes has to waste even more pitches here in the fourth.
Well I blame that on Hughes in the third.
Please explain to me how Martin’s passed ball in the fourth is the fault of Hughes an inning prior. I’d love to hear your answer.
I was talking about the raised pitch count, not the passed ball.
Again how does that affect Martin’s ability to catch the ball?
My post was regarding the past ball costing Hughes pitches. Sure pitch count has something to do with that statement, BUT again you are just looking for things to poke at. Like seriously, you would poke a wasps nest if they said something even the faintest bit negative. There’s a difference between us calling you out on your borderline hysterical posts earlier this season and last season and calling out every single negative comment made about anything. I am a Yankee fan. I want them to win the World Series every year, and win every time they step on the field. I want every pitcher to pitch well and every hitter to have a good at bat. At the same time I understand that these things aren’t going to happen every night and every season. HOWEVER I reserve the right to question managerial decisions I don’t agree with AND call out players for not doing the minimum requirements of their jobs (aka a pitcher throwing strikes, a player catching a ball hit directly to him, a hitter swinging at hittable pitches AND a catcher catching pitches.)
Greg. You’re a troll.
If Hechavarria scores is that an earned run?
4 runs in the last 20 innings and Ichiro is responsible for 3 of them, Chris Stewart the other. Where is the top of the lineup? This is the Blue Jays pitching staff, not the As! We should be pummeling these clowns.
This game has been so boring I fell asleep. Hopefully the Giants will wake me up.
GMEN
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-yo.....other-team
Ummm…
I just…I can’t even…omg…this seriously just ruined any shred of goodness I had left in me today.
I agree with the last thing in that article.
+1
Sorry Mike.
Politics!
I fucking hate ESPN New York.
I just want this to be a quote taken out of context so, so badly.
He better fucking not. My inner child would be so devastated. It was bad enough losing Andy for a few years. I couldn’t handle Jeter in another uniform.
Jeter will end his baseball career as a Yankee. He has to.
Seems to me just a ploy to avoid the mess he had last time he had to negotiate. Publicly saying that he only wanted to play for the Yankees doesn’t exactly give much leverage. I can’t imagine he would suddenly change his tune.
KKKK
4K inning. yay.
4 K’s and an audible FUCK from Lawrie!
Nice Phil, when’s the last time a Yankee pitcher did that?
AJ
The field mics have been excellent lately.
FOUR STRIKEOUTS!
eli time.
has anyone seen this i pray to god this is not true because melky deny and said the same thing basically
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....um=twitter
that would be bad.
If you can throw your changeup for a strike you can handle the Yankees easily.
WHOA!
Are some of the comments getting deleted?
Uhhh…what just happened to the comments?
Chili for lunch, pork n beans for dinner, lots of gas tomorrow.
OH MY GOD. have you guys seen this:
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play......d=24871751
outrageously good. Too bad this is the most big league action Cervi’s seen this year.
All of a sudden I can’t respond to comments because of my impersonator!
Fucking Ichiro.
Should resign his ass for the cheap.
Notice he’s not bailing out as much against lefties? K-Long effect maybe?
Eli to Bennett for a touchdown.
I’m beginning to think Gregland is even crazier than Eddardland and yoobooland.
See. They mentioned it again and they talked to baseball people.
Russell is so good at that delayed steal.
Russell trying to atone.
Heads up Russ. Nice
I love the aggression there by Martin. Should have tried it with Nix last inning instead of bunting. Now drive him home.
Has Curtis seen a pitch in the zone yet?
Now they almost have to score. Mike needs to open a new thread, this one’s broke.
Just so that my ears didn’t fail me – Kay did just say “Jake McGee”, right?
Time to remind Aaron Laffey that he is still Aaron Laffey.
I hate that. Pitching coaches or managers shouldn’t go up to the mound in the middle of a count.
Destroy this clown
I hate threads where Mike has to delete stuff because people are stupid.
This is actually a response to something from last Thursday. #nowyallreallyconfused
Hello?
Ichiro slam!
Let’s not waste this, please.
Bases loaded, hottest hitter at bat.
sweet rally.
