Mark Teixeira tested his strained left calf on the field today, telling reporters that he ran sprints at about 80% and simulated running the bases. “I’d like to play tomorrow but we’ll see,” he said while acknowledging that there was still some lingering tightness.
The Yankees have been without their first baseman for eight games and counting due to the calf, and after four straight years of no fewer than 156 games played, Teixeira may not even crack 140 this season. He also sat out some games due to a left wrist issue and vocal cord damage earlier this season despite never actually going on the DL. The Orioles are scheduled to throw three left-handed starters this weekend, so getting Teixeira back even as the DH would be huge considering the team’s struggles against southpaws.
