Teixeira may play tomorrow despite lingering tightness in calf

By

Mark Teixeira tested his strained left calf on the field today, telling reporters that he ran sprints at about 80% and simulated running the bases. “I’d like to play tomorrow but we’ll see,” he said while acknowledging that there was still some lingering tightness.

The Yankees have been without their first baseman for eight games and counting due to the calf, and after four straight years of no fewer than 156 games played, Teixeira may not even crack 140 this season. He also sat out some games due to a left wrist issue and vocal cord damage earlier this season despite never actually going on the DL. The Orioles are scheduled to throw three left-handed starters this weekend, so getting Teixeira back even as the DH would be huge considering the team’s struggles against southpaws.

    Me gusta.

It is still dangerous if he feels tightness because with undue effort, he may rupture muscle fibers which could put him out of the game for the rest of the season. I am sorry he feels like this at this time.

Throw some dirt on it and get out there.

Jesus, this team needs all the help it can get to get. Lets go Tex.

Sounds like a bad idea if his calf isn’t fully healed.

      Yup.

Why would they let him? They (stupidly) invested a lot of money in him.

Wasn’t stupid at the time. He was one of the top 1b in the game at the time. Wait til what Pujols looks 4 years into his deal, and his deal is longer than teix’s.

Wow…what a wuss…needs to get in better shape…I mean really out of all the infielders the First baseman has the easiest job.

Lingering tightness means he shouldn’t play. He injuries it again and he could be gone all of September.

That said, get back soon as his bat and glove are needed. I checked when he went down, and he ranked right around 25th in AL fWAR and 4th among AL 1B’men. He’s not what he was at his peak, but his value is missed, especially since Swish is now at first, which means more Ibanez and Jones in the OF. Bad.
