Yankees claim Danny Otero from Giants

By

The Yankees have claimed right-handed reliever Danny Otero off waivers from the Giants, the team announced. Left-hander Cesar Cabral was placed on the 60-day DL to create 40-man roster space.

Otero, 28, made San Francisco’s Opening Day roster last year and owns 5.84 ERA (2.77 FIP) in 12.1 career big league innings, all with the Giants last year. He struck out eight of 57 batters faced while unintentionally walking just one. Over the last two years, he owns a 3.03 ERA (~3.15 FIP) with a 19.7% strikeout rate and a 3.6% walk rate in 98 Triple-A innings. Otero is a rather generic upper-80s/low-90s sinker/slider reliever with minor league options remaining, so just another arm for the stable basically.

So he’ll be DFA’d in the next few days, most likely clear waivers considering the Yankees won the claim with the lowest waiver priority, be outrighted to Scranton, and probably never be heard from again.

Yankees are probably worried about losing bullpen depth with the 40-man roster crunch. I guess this just gives them some depth in case one of their other bullpen DFA candidates gets claimed.

If he had options remaining how come the Giants did not keep him in the system?

Angels get Exicardo CAyones and Kramer Sneed for Vernon Wells

That is the worst mispelling of “Slade Heathcott” I’ve ever seen. Go back to school. Jeebus.

    • gageagainstthemachine says:

Wasn’t Exicardo the bag of balls we got when we dumped our Vernon Wells (a.k.a. AJ Burnett). That poor guy is becoming the definition of “contract-dump trade fodder” if he’s the same guy I’m thinking of.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Sadly, it’s going to be very difficult for him to fulfill his lifelong dream of being traded for Albert Pujols.

I can’t believe they traded Kramer for Wells.
What’s next? Costanza for Jeff Francoeur?

      • gageagainstthemachine says:

Sadly, the Boss traded George in the mid-90s to Tyler Chicken in exchange for an all chicken menu at the old stadium. I’m guessing Tyler Chicken was the one stuck with that albatross of a contract in its declining years.

Claiming this tool when Overbay and Ramon Hernandez are available or soon to be available…. WTF is going on in the Front Office???

  6. tmoney says:

maybe we could trade him for Melky and IPK?

  7. Cesar "Stairs" Cabral says:

    I’ll be back, beetches.

    RIP Danny Otero.
