Heathcott & Ramirez help Thunder to a win

Game 31: Coors Field
Rockies shutout punchless Yanks in series opener

RHP Mikey O’Brien has been promoted to Double-A Trenton according to Josh Norris. The Thunder have a full rotation, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens there. I suppose this could be the end of the ill-fated LHP Francisco Rondon as a starter experiment, especially since they line up to pitch on the same day.

Late Updates: 3B Rob Segedin has an impingement in his hip, according to Norris. Hence the whole season-ending thing. Also, Norris says RHP Caleb Cotham has indeed been promoted to Triple-A and will start Thursday.

Triple-A Scranton (3-1 win over Indianapolis)

  • 2B Corban Joseph: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B
  • CF Melky Mesa: 0-4, 4 K — 49 strikeouts and four walks this year
  • LF Zoilo Almonte: 1-4, 1 K
  • 3B Ronnie Mustelier: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Brett Marshall: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 8 K, 2/5 GB/FB — 58 of 92 pitches were strikes (63%) … 21 walks in 31.1 innings
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — only ten of 21 pitches were strikes (48%) … seven walks in his last 7.1 innings

Double-A Trenton (5-1 win over Binghampton)

  • LF Ramon Flores: 0-4, 1 K — stuck in a little 6-for-37 (.162) rut
  • C J.R. Murphy: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 2-4, 1 R, 3 RBI, 1 K — eight hits in his last 28 at-bats (.286), so he’s starting to come around a bit
  • RHP Jose Ramirez: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 4/1 GB/FB — 53 of 84 pitches were strikes (63%) … he was 91-96 mph with the fastball
  • RHP Danny Burawa: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 15 of 27 pitches were strikes (56%)

High-A Tampa (4-2 loss to Fort Myers)

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-4, 1 K
  • LF Ben Gamel: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 BB
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 2-4, 1 RBI — 16 hits in his last 38 at-bats (.421)
  • DH Gary Sanchez: 0-4, 2 K — six hits in his last 39 at-bats (.154)
  • RHP Corey Black: 4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 4/2 GB/FB — 41/11 K/BB in 34.2 innings
  • RHP Matt Daley: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — this was his fourth appearance, so I have to think he’ll join the Triple-A team soon

Low-A Charleston was rained out. The game will not be made up.

Wow Melky. Hope you’re not getting used to being on the 40-man roster…

    • YankeePankee

Don’t give up. He’s Carlos “Go Go” Gomez three years ago. Check the history.

      • forensic

Is that supposed to make me feel better? Despite Mike going nuts for him over this past offseason (if I remember correctly), I really don’t want a Carlos Gomez on my team.

        • jsbrendog

have you seen what carlos gomez is doing this year? and did last year? maybe you should, i dunno, look at facts before saying uninformed things. he has been trending upward each yr. last year he seemed to put it together at the end and has continued to mash. i would take him over everyone in our outfield except granderson.

      • RetroRob

It’s not a question of giving up. I’ve never been on the Melky 2.0 bandwagon.

Almonte has moved ahead of him on the depth charts. They could remove Mesa from the 40-man right now. He’s less than fungible!

        •CF Melky Mesa: 0-4, 4 K — 49 strikeouts and four walks this year

What’s nice is that this can be considered Ramirez’s worst start of the year, I hope he keeps up the good work (and that includes staying healthy).

Who knows maybe if he keeps pitching well logs enough innings he could compete for a rotation spot next year.

    • Tim B.

I think there’s too many guys ahead of Ramirez for him to get a spot next year. Needs to prove himself in AA and AAA with consistency.

      • Bo Knows

The options ahead of him there are very few

Betances has no shot, unless he somehow pulls a Randy Johnson and puts it together.

Banuelos will be going through his first season back from TJ so he won’t be an option

As much as I love Wang (twss teehee)he is probably not going to be here next year.

Phelps depending on if Andy and Hiroki do and whether they re-sign Phil will have a spot in the rotation.

Nuno, although I don’t see the hype for him has certainly earned a chance to compete for a position, as will Warren.

That means Nova, Warren, Nuno, Ramirez and Phelps would be competing for the final slots. Ramirez has much better raw stuff than everyone else on that list save for Nova, if he pitches extremely well this year he would have a very realistic shot at taking a rotation spot.

Hughes (I think they will re-sign him)

        • Cool Lester Smooth

          Yeah…Nuno’s got no shot.

      • Coolerking101

If Ramirez continues doing this at AA, he’ll be bumped to AAA at some point after the All-Star break. Assuming he holds his own at AAA, he’d be given a shot to make the roster out of spring training. Bo Knows is dead on.

        • Tim B

Yeah we will see about that. If you’ve been around the Yankees organization long enough you would KNOW he won’t have a chance next year. Maybe 2015 if all goes well…

  • Gordon M

According to MILB.com Heathcott had three RBI.

  • your mom

    Mel “K” Mesa

    • YankeePankee

Don’t give up. He’s Carlos “Go Go” Gomez three years ago. Check the history.

      • Laz

        So a trade chip then.
Gomez is an awful hitter, wouldn’t make it on this team.

  • JD

What happened to Gumbs? Montgomery wildness of late is strange. Hope it’s not physical.

  • Deathstroke Heathcott

    • forensic

I’m probably the only one, and I know I’m a pretty simple person, but for some reason I always seem to get a kick out of these ‘comments’ every night.

      • I’m not the droids you’re looking for…

        I’ve said the same.

  • Wayne

Hope Jose Ramirez can pitch a little longer next time but we need to take it slow with Jose Ramirez. Does anyone know if he pitches on Mother’s Day or Tuesday next week?

    • Bo Knows

He’s on a pitch/inning count like all the prospects seem to be right now. They probably aren’t going to let him exceed 5 innings too many times this year. The way they are handling things, it makes me think they are going for an innings cap of around 130-150.

  • YankeePankee

Find it strange that Yanks don’t have Kuroda teach his fantastic splitter to Yanks young pitchers who need an out pitch: Warren, Phelps, etc..

    • Cool Lester Smooth

I’m sure they do. And I’m also sure that it’s just as effective as having Mo teach them his cutter.

      • forensic

        heh, well done.

  • Wayne

I can see them limiting Jose Ramirez right now but by August he should be able to go seven innings. Unfortunately I don’t think the yanks will be patient enough to keep him and Hal will have him traded by the deadline this year or sometime in the next two years. Adam warren they are going throw into the rotation in the middle of this year you watch and after not building up the arm strength as a reliever, his career will be done like jobas’ is. What they should do is put Vidal Nuno in rotation if petite were to get hurt right now but any further into the season I would put Brett Marshall in there. There is no way Ivan Nova is better than Jose Ramirez. If it were up to me i would keep Adam Warren in the bullpen as the long man for rest of the year. I would not put Nova in rotation trade his ass in offseason. Let Phil Hughes go after this year and put Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno in rotation next year but don’t mess around with Nuno back and forth like you did with phelps this year. Bret Marshall you keep and use as a longman next year. David Phelps should be your other longman next year, he is better as a longman. I want to see more in ou bullpen from clairborne this year. Our bullpen should be shaky next year. It should have Clairborne, Robertson ,Phelps , kahnle should be brought up next year. We will have to sign a free agent closer or if we can’t I would then give David Phelps a shot as a closer.

Segedin news is terrible. Guy has shown a real bat and was a David Adams promotion away from AAA. Had he kept up the hitting, he had a realistic shot of getting some playing time in the bigs this year or next.
