Friday Night Open Thread

The Yankees are still a few hours away — aren’t West Coast night games on the weekend just the worst? — so use this as your open thread until the regular game thread comes along. The Cardinals and Reds will be on MLB Network (Wainwright vs. Leake), plus there’s some NHL playoff action on as well. Talk about either game or anything else here. Have at it.

Not so much when you’re at work and they can help pass the time if it’s a slow night.

    • jjyank says:

But they are when you have to be up at 5 AM for work the next morning :)

      • Ethan says:

They also are when you’re living in Europe and can manage to stay up for East Coast games but West coast games are just too late. I won’t be able to watch any of the games on the West coast sadly. Well, except for the day games. So yay for day games!

      • And in merrie olde England says:

Try working a game and a 5am start around my timezone :D

  2. forensic says:

So, Ian Clarkin, welcome to the NY Media…

    • Pat D says:

Well, I think he showed some savvy with his comments but why the fuck should he have to “apologize?” A kid isn’t allowed to have his fandom?

      • Jacob the OG says:

        Media is ridiculous

      • jjyank says:

Is this about the non-Yankee fan thing? Who gives a shit? We’re drafting people from all over the country, we can expect them all to be Yankee fans growing up. Let’s me mature about this.

Oh, who am I kidding? We’re all gonna shriek like Guns did earlier today and spend hours complaining about it. Am I right?

        • Jacob the OG says:

Someone actually gave him shit on here about it? Can I get a link?

        • Bo Knows says:

          Like I said last night

so many players are not drafted by their favorite teams it’s crazy, if the media is going to be this overblown by what a kid who 6 years old at the time of the 2001 WS did or felt; I honestly wouldn’t blame Clarkin if he just decided this shit wasn’t worth the headache and just went to college and get drafted higher in three years.

            • forensic says:

              “Life-changing money” according to him.

Personally, just getting his slot money would be a pretty nice life changer for me…

              • Pat D says:

Something over $1 million should be life-changing to an 18-year old kid, no matter how much he thinks he needs to give to his family.

                • forensic says:

Exactly, that’s why saying that doesn’t make any sense. Almost makes it look like he doesn’t really have a concept of what that much money can do for you and what the real world is like.

Maybe his parents, being from San Diego, have plenty of money and he doesn’t really have or never learned the concept of needing to earn it or what over $1.5 million can do for you, but there seems like there may be some sort of disconnect there.

                  • Bo Knows says:

1 million dollars is not really life changing money. It’s enough to keep someone set for a short while but if I was Clarkin, I’d ask for two million and try to get a over slot around 1.8 million

                    • forensic says:

I didn’t say $1 million, I said slot money which for him is over $1.6 million.

I also didn’t say it would set him for life, I said life-changing, which is it. It buys you a house, a car, starts retirement/savings accounts, pays off debts from his parents (if they have any), etc…

                    • Bo Knows says:

I meant to comment to Pat D, but the point still stands. The taxes take a big chunk out of the bonus and the million bucks doesn’t go as far as it used to. If he spent it on all that stuff, he’d pretty much be broke. If I was Clarkin, I’d definitely try to get as close to 2 mill as possible.

I think the idea of “life-changing” was used because he couldn’t think of a better phrase; I think Clarkin wants a bonus closer to what his national rankings say he is, which is a top 15 talent. I think he’ll sign, but its going to take something around 1.8-2.0 million dollars to do it.

              • Bo Knows says:

He’ll get above slot money, I bet it’ll take a figure around the amount Hensley was initially going to sign for which would pay him like the 13-16 guy. I bet Jagielo and Judge both take slot or a little below.

Yankees are drafting a ton of older college players this year, so I imagine they are going to put the vast majority of their pool into the top 4, especially Clarkin

  3. forensic says:

Since I seem to be starting all the comments… ;-)

There’s just something wrong about there still being NHL games (and they’re not even in the Finals yet!) when it’s 109 degrees out today and 111 degrees out tomorrow.

    • Pat D says:

Where are you that it was that hot?

Also, I think that was an effect of the lockout. Unless I’m wrong, the NHL Finals usually end before the NBA Finals, and obviously that’s not happening this year.

      • forensic says:

        Las Vegas.

        • Pat D says:

          Ah, I see.

It was rainy and cool here in PA. Not nice for early June.

          • forensic says:

Yeah, these two days are near record highs for us (also excessive heat warnings, but those are pretty typical over the course of the summer). Hopefully these near record highs aren’t a sign of things to come during the rest of the summer.

            • Pat D says:

Yea, or else you may never be able to go outside without you skin burning off.

              That would kinda suck.

  4. Jacob the OG says:

Official fan crush on judge and clarkin right now, jageilo is italian american so I like him too :P

  5. forensic says:

Looks like Nuno left tonight’s AAA game in the 2nd inning. Anyone have any info on why?

  6. Jacob the OG says:

Zack Wheeler set to debut on June 14th, otherwise know as my birthday. Last year Matt Cain’s perfect game (end of it on east coast time) this year a very heralded prospect debuts…. nice.

  7. mark says:

Nuno pulled from AAA game. Mike?

  8. Bo Knows says:

De Paula must have not have liked his k/9 only being 14+; five innings in he has 8 punchouts on 68 pitches

When will he be promoted, it seriously just seems like he’s puppeteer and everyone else are just his marionettes

  9. Pat D says:

Gotta love Sweeney Murti’s reaction to Paul O’Neill’s tweet celebrating his nephew’s drafting.

    Water cooler manufacturers rejoice!

  10. neo says:

The entire stupidity of the Ian Clarkin is a Red Sox fan… At appears someone created a fake twitter account today, @IanClarkin, with one tweet:

“So pissed that the #Yankees drafted me. Oh well…#MLBDraft”

    • Pat D says:

He’s not a Red Sox fan from what I can tell. What he said today is that his dad is a Pirates fan, his mom is a Yankees fan, and he “roots for underdogs,” which is why he wanted the Diamondbacks to win the World Series that didn’t happen in 2001.

  11. MannyGeee says:

I am tonight watching my 3rd hockey game. The first was mp with my father (he got free tickets at work and took me. I had to tell him there were 3 periods, he had no idea. He embarrassingly asked a drunk Sully at Boston Garden how many quarters there were…. Not a ‘hockey guy’ and he hasn’t watched a game since). Second was with my oldest son when he was 2, he fell asleep in my arms.

And then today, alone with the dog while my dad is in the hospital and my son is upstairs being 14 and too cool to hang with his old man.

    Such is life.

    • Bob Buttons says:

In no way am I implying that you, or anyone is a bad parent. Sometimes it really ain’t your fault, since parents and kids don’t necessarily share the same interests. Though keep bringing up embarrassing childhood stories and/or repetitive teasing of your kids won’t endear you to them. Again, not implying that you do do any of these, but it wouldn’t hurt to put it out here for everyone to see, since sometimes we really do forget, even if we knew at one point.

Hope your dad is okay overall.

  12. pat says:

How is CMW signing with Toronto not some sort of collusion or tampering? They obviously contacted him while he was under contract with the Yankees. Is it some sort of handshake agreement that he can seek emoykwnt elsewhere?

  13. Neil Hollander says:

Speaking of Banshee it’s the coolest show on TV. Cinemax. Anybody watching it ? Season 2 in January.
