Game 58: Just Win (Again)

Last night’s win over the Indians felt like a million bucks, but now the Yankees have to do it again. One win does not halt a skid as we learned with last Friday’s victory over the Red Sox. The Bombers need to string a few more of these things together and get on a little bit of a roll as the weather warms up. Here’s the lineup that will face left-hander Scott Kazmir…

  1. CF Ichiro Suzuki
  2. SS Jayson Nix
  3. 1B Mark Teixeira
  4. DH Robinson Cano
  5. LF Vernon Wells
  6. 3B Kevin Youkilis
  7. 2B David Adams
  8. RF Lyle Overbay
  9. C Chris Stewart

And on the mound is the former Hazelwood West High School Wildcat, right-hander David Phelps. He’s coming off that disastrous five-run, one-out start against the Mets.

The weather is lovely in New York, so there won’t be any trouble getting in a full nine innings tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

Injury Update: Eduardo Nunez (setback) tried to swing a bat today and suffered another setback. He’s headed for various tests and won’t be back anytime soon.

Prussia would never fear Scott Kazmir.

    • Havok9120

We will drink from his skull in the totally Hollywood fashion of the Teutons.

      • trr

        Rootin’ Teutons!

        • Havok9120

That pun has never even occurred to me. I feel so ashamed.

          • trr

Buck up and let’s win this one!

  • BigBlueAL

Hope for alot of K’s from Phelps tonight. Not exactly the best defensive lineup the Yankees can throw out there.

    • The Doctor

I guess with Swisher, Reynolds, and Santana in the heart of the lineup you can probably count on at least a few, but it does seem like a bit of a gamble. Overbay will really have to hold his own without Gardner’s flat out stupid range covering some of right.

    • trr

not by a long shot. Hope for a bounce back start from Phelps

  • The Doctor

Benching Gardner hardly seems like the best way to win, especially when Overbay’s in right field. Just have to hope Phelps can keep the ball on the ground until the inevitable defensive replacement.

    • trr

Not really a benching, more a day off, I’d say

      • The Doctor

Oh I know I’m not implying anything negative, I just use the term benching to describe any time they’re on the bench instead of the field. Maybe a bit confusing. Still, I wouldn’t say this is the right day for a day off either.

        • trr

Oh…yeah,Doc, it’s tough right now to take anyone out of the lineup who’s been productive…

    • LarryM Fl

Can not figure out Girardi’s lineups. Why not Gardner in CF. He did get a nice two RBI hit last night. Romine has three hits in the last two games.

      • trr

Day game tomorrow, just giving some of the guys a bit of a breather

  • LarryM Fl

If it was not for bad luck Eduardo would have no luck at all.

    Go Yanks!

    • Pasta

Give nunez the rest of the year off then cut him loose. Hes a pussy.

      • LarryM Fl

At 6′ 155 he does eat enough pasta. Thus,he has an injury riddled MLB career.

      • jjyank

        Or just injured. But…okay.

  • Pasta

Just have this strange feeling that phelps throws a no hitter tonight.

    • trr

that IS strange, Pasta, but I hope you’re right

  • trr

Ichiro leading off, an interesting wrinkle. Overbay in RF vs. LHP?
Adams back at 2B….I guess Girardi is thinking about the Day game tomorrow.

    • The Doctor

Didn’t even think about the fact that it’s a lefty on the mound. Not sure how you can really justify having Overbay instead of Gardner out there. Sure, Brett needs rest occasionally but this is a pretty crucial time to turn things around, I’m sure he’d survive a couple more days.

Can’t say batting Vernon ahead of Youk makes any sense to me either.

      • Repo Man

Youk should probably be batting at the top of the order in place of Ichiro or Nix. That is a completely punchless 1-2, and Youk mashes lefties.

        • jjyank

Youk mashed lefties. It could still be small sample noise, but he has a -24 wRC+ against LHP so far this season.

That said, I do think he’ll come around on that front. But let’s not use the present tense for the time being.

    • Laz

Agree. At this point Overbay is useless vs most lhp.

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Christ, that defensive alignment tonight.

I defer all questions and comments on Nunez to Eddard this evening.

  • Repo Man

Cano and Gardner are the two most valuable Yankee position players over the last few years via fWAR. If your two best position players need a day off, why pick the same day? Is this really about finding more PA’s for Overbay?

    • Laz

Cano is still in as the DH, I guess they just wanted the night off for hafner.

      • Repo Man

My mistake, I didn’t see cano’s name in there for some reason.

    • The Doctor

No idea. It made sense to me at first, giving Gardner the day against a lefty makes sense, but Overbay is much worse against lefties and doesn’t really provide any value defensively (at least not that we know of).

    • trr

      against a LHP?

  • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Double digit runs tonight. Young and Adams go yard. Yeah I said it.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

      Youk*

    • jjyank

A steak dinner for you if you are right, good sir.

Though my offer only stands if you come to DC :D

      • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Mmm steak. And I have a couple of old flings in DC too (one a former skins cheerleaders).

You’re on, bro. Only a 12 hour drive from Jacksonville I thnk..

  • Winter

While I don’t like taking Gardner out of the lineup just as he seems like he might be heating up, I understand it. He’s played every inning of every game for the last 11 games, with no off-days in that stretch (although there was the rain game).

  • Eddard

I have full faith in BGDP tonight and Overbay has his back in RF.

    • jjyank

I’m curious. Did you have faith in him 5 days ago? Because if you did, you might want to change it up a bit. Like Plouffy riding the bus. Baseball fans are a superstitious lot.

      • Eddard

Yes I did. Name me one pitcher who hasn’t had a clunker every now and then. Look at him, striking out guys right and left.

        • jjyank

My point wasn’t actually pointing out your man-crush on Phelps. Which, by the way, is kind of weird. What I was saying, was a light hearted attempt to inject some old-meme into Eddard World. I suppose that was a swing and a miss on your end, though.

    • Winter

Here is what Eddard said before Phelps’s last start:

With a 3 game slide and the offense sputtering so much it’s no surprise that Girardi will hand the ball to BGDP to turn the ship around.

And here is what he said during that start:

I can’t believe he gave up a hit to Ike Davis. Take him out and boo him off the field. He’s no longer BGDP.

      And after the start

Dave Phelps… has lost his BG monicker for now.

What exactly did Phelps do to earn “BG” status back?

  • Anderson Silva

anybody else getting a “temporary unavailable” message on mlb.tv for the yankees game?

    • Eddard

No, it’s working fine for me.

  • Mykey

Already an improvement over last start.

  • Wheels

    Good start

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Overbay in the OF against a LHP makes my head hurt.
So does Jayson Nix batting second.

    • The Real Greg

I would have switched Youkilis and Nix.

    • Pasta

Loverbay is a 500 hitter against kazmir.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

385/467/462 in 15 PAs against Kazmir
He hasn’t faced him since 2010, and 13 of the 15 PAs came in 2006 and 2007. Not a very relevant sample.

  • Dalek Jeter

Barely paying attention, but it must be a typo that our two worst hitters in the lineup are hitting 1&2 right?

    • The Real Greg

No because David Adams is actually a worse hitter right now than Jayson Nix.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

        Based on?

        • The Real Greg

          Nix .243 BA .311 OBP
          Adams .242 BA .266 OBP

Pretty even in batting average but a major differential in OBP.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

            Nix: 613 OPS, 66 wRC+
            Adams: 653 OPS, 73 wRC+

            vs. LHP
            Nix: 300/406/300 101 wRC+
            Adams: 444/474/556 185 wRC+

            • The Real Greg

The OPS difference comes from the slugging percentage differential.

It just seems though that Adams has been in a major funk and the league has figured him out.

I would prefer Youkilis in the two hole. But I’m not going to complain about Nix.

              • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

                SLG counts too.
But Adams is definitely slumping right now.

    • Get Phelps Up

Ichiro has very good numbers against LHP this season, Albeit in a only 62 PAs.

      • Get Phelps Up

Even Nix has decent numbers against them but I’d rather see Youk or Adams there.

        • The Real Greg

          Not Adams. He’s crashed.

  • The Real Greg

It just seems like Cano has been in a slump forever.

    • http://www.penuel-law.com/ Cuso

Dropping your BA by 40 points in 3 weeks will make it seem that way.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

      about 4 games
The 11 games before that he hit 317/417/610

      • The Real Greg

Really? Doesn’t feel like hit. As Cuso mentioned, his batting average has been dipping southward.

  • Pasta

Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
    And stars fill my dream
I’m a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race
    This world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait
    All will be revealed

Talk in song from tongues of lilting grace
    Sounds caress my ear
And not a word I heard could I relate
    The story was quite clear

    • Wheels

      lol

  • Pasta

    Bigger puss
    Stewie or Nunez

  • Pasta

    There goes the perfect game

  • The Real Greg

Phelps had a Hughes moment. Can’t put away hitters.

  • hogsmog

Is Giambi getting cheers or boos?

  • FEED.ME.MORE!

My irrational love for Jason Giambi will never die.

“My heart will go on” by Celine Dion plays in the background.

  • Jersey Joe

Looking at the lineup just now…why isn’t David Adams batting 2nd? He needs ABs to get out of his mini-slump, and what makes Nix better than him?

    • FEED.ME.MORE!

Nix is a Ball Player, don’t forget.

  • Pasta

Pineda sitting at 93 with nasty stuff in a little over a month! Bye bye flyball phil.

    • Jersey Joe

If the FO trades Hughes, I wonder what they could get from him. It’s not like the Yankees would get a compensation pick, but Hughes has quite a bit of potential. I wonder if we could send Hughes to the Padres in exchange for Nick Hundley? Maybe?? Doubtful, but that trade has some upside for both teams. Maybe if we toss in a little bit the trade could go through, and Hughes would be able to prove himself in Petco.

      • Pasta

        Atlanta
Pack him and joba up for Mcanns

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      flyball phil

As if Pineda isn’t an extreme fly ball pitcher himself. But at least he’s coming off major shoulder surgery, he’s a lock to pitch better than Hughes!

  • Wheels

    Damn you Swish!

  • Cy Pettitte

@Buccigross Outside the Lines has learned that MLB is preparing to suspend Alex Rodriguez, Ryan Braun and others connected to Biogenesis clinic in Miami

    oh boy….

    • The Real Greg

Well forget ARod for the year.

Just dump him and eat the money. See if Adams can develop.

      • The Real Greg

And if they suspend Cano too, you can really forget the season.

        • Pasta

          And Cervelli.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

If Arod gets suspended now, nothing would really change. He’d serve the 50 games while he was going to be out anyways.

    • Jersey Joe

      Nice.

    • Pasta

Wont happen they have no evidence its all in Arods safe.

    • Roadgeek Adam

I don’t question its truthfulness, but any other sources to back that?

(Just the Wikipedian in me to make sure we have more than one source.)

      • Cy Pettitte

a bunch of ESPN people are reporting it, haven’t see it from any other outlet yet

    • Eddard

Good. Both Hal and Cashman went out of their way recently to bash Arod so hopefully they’ll banish him from the team like the WS winning Giants did with Melky.

      • JobaWockeeZ

        lol

    • Jimmy McNulty

Hopefully they can find a way to void the contract. Or at least get it not to count against the luxury tax. Can they even suspend someone that hasn’t tested positive.

    • Cy Pettitte

      T.J. QuinnVerified account
      ?@TJQuinnESPN
BREAKING: MLB will seek to suspend A-Rod, Ryan Braun and about 20 players connected to Miami clinic. Founder Tony Bosch agreed to cooperate.

20 players, wow this is gonna be ugly

      • Roadgeek Adam

More ESPN. But I’d like to know the 20 not named Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Braun.

        • Get Phelps Up

The players who might ultimately face discipline from MLB include: Rodriguez, Braun, Cabrera, Colon, Grandal, Nelson Cruz, Francisco Cervelli, Jesus Montero, Jhonny Peralta, CesarPuello, Fernando Martinez, Everth Cabrera, Fautini de los Santos, Jordan Norberto, and a number of players who are either identified by code names or whose names appear in other documents not obtained by “Outside the Lines.” All are currently on major-league rosters but for Puello, a top outfield prospect for the New York Mets who is playing in Class AA Binghamton.

          http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/st.....estigation

  • Mykey

    Poor Vernon.

  • The Real Greg

Now I just want to be sure? What was the connection between Cano and that clinic? I know there was one, but I forget what it was.

    • Wheels

The spokeswoman of his foundation was a client of the clinic.

      • Pasta

        Bunch of miami guys
Reyes and stanton may be hit too.

        • Pasta

The pitcher in washington gonzales too

          • trr

Why not just suspend my whole fantasy team roster and be done with it?

  • Mykey

Who decided this hat thing was a good idea?

  • Roadgeek Adam

This Al & Michael thing is hillarious.

  • Eddard

I could watch 3 straight hours of Michael Kay trying on different size hats.

    • trr

      I can’t watch 3 mins. of it.

  • Pasta

Nix just ruined the no hitter

  • Anderson Silva

Jayson Nix, still not very good at baseball

  • Pasta

Nix and stewart turds in the Yankee punchbowl.

  • SDB

I feel more comfortable when the ball’s going to Loverbay in RF than when it’s hit towards Nix.

  • Mykey

Impressive move for a righty there, Phelps.

  • Wheels

He had an awesome pick off of Jose Bautista at second base a couple weeks ago too.

  • SDB

    This could be interesting.

Disappointing to see Cervelli’s name at the bottom of the piece among the suspected clients. That could mean a hell of a lot more of Stewart…

  • Eddard

That’s why Overbay is in RF.

  • Pasta

Can MLB SUSPEND nunez too tired of his rehab stories.

  • The Real Greg

Here is a possible list of players facing suspension.

Rodriguez, Braun, Cabrera, Colon, Grandal, Nelson Cruz, Francisco Cervelli, Jesus Montero, Jhonny Peralta, CesarPuello, Fernando Martinez, Everth Cabrera, Fautini de los Santos, Jordan Norberto,

Montero is the interesting one. Wonder if the Yankees kind of suspected him using.

  • Troll

Enrique Iglesias doubles, Jackie Chan Jr. homers, and Daniella Nava single. Bam, bam, bam. I hate the Red Sox more and more with each passing day.

  • Pasta

Going to need a catcher too
    Hughes and Joba for mccanns

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

      Don’t think that’s nearly enough.

  • SDB

Good grief. Stewart can’t fucking run, can he? Second amateur baserunning mistake in the last couple of weeks.

  • Mykey

Nice hit Stewart, but God can he be stupid on the bases.

  • Wheels

    Oh Stewart

  • The Real Greg

Why wasn’t Overbay going home during the rundown?

    • Anderson Silva

no chance.. they were watching him all the way. Fuck Stewart and his stupidity.

    • sangreal

Because they would’ve just thrown home. There are times when a rundown can help, but that wasn’t one of them

    • Mykey

They were doing a good job looking him down during the rundown. I was looking for that. Plus, he’s not the most fleet of foot.

      • trr

In fairness, he was reading the height of the throw, thinking it’d go through; but yeah, a runner with better instincts wouldn’t have done thar

  • Pasta

    Stewart =turd in punchbowl

  • Anderson Silva

Even he does something good, he screws it up immediately. What a fucking lost cause.

  • Eddard

Even when Stewart does something good he makes sure to balance it out by doing something stupid.

  • The Real Greg

Actually in the end, it’s just a sacrifice.

    That pays.

    • Anderson Silva

We should have scored another run if not for Stewart.

      • The Real Greg

Maybe but we are approaching FALLACY territory.

  • Mykey

What the hell is going on out there?

  • The Real Greg

Can’t tell if Stewart would have scored on that. But I’m entering FALLACY territory

  • Eddard

4 base hits in the inning and Chris Stewart had to run into the only out.

  • Troll

    Ortiz tripled . . .

Jesus Christ . . . plays for the Red Sox apparently.

    TEX! Hell yeah!

  • Cy Pettitte

    that was crushed, nice.

  • Anderson Silva

    fuck yeah TEIX!!!

  • Leg-End

Rampant offense! Is this real life?

  • Eddard

    ANOTHER HR FOR TEIXERA!!!!!

  • BigBlueAL

Safe to say its nice to have Tex back.

  • nycsportzfan

    Ya Texy!!!!!

  • Anderson Silva

now if only they can get Cano, the good hitter, back

    • The Real Greg

The Yankees may not get Cano back this year, depending on where these suspensions go.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Umm, you realize he hasn’t actually been connected to anything yet, right?
You can say the same thing about any player.

        • The Real Greg

Well it’s not likely because his connection is really tedious.

But this is Bud Selig we’re talking about.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I don’t think tedious is the word you are looking for.

            • The Real Greg

              You’re right. Dubious then, loose.

              • Dan in Athens

                You mean tenuous.

  • Troll

Is Cano ever going to come back from this slump? It’d be nice to have a solid trio in the middle of the lineup.

    • Wheels

He’ll probably come of his slump before Wells comes out of his.

  • Pasta

Everyone call francessa tomorrow and bitch about Cano

  • Eddard

I guess all of that outrage over the 1-2 hitters was all for nothing. Ich and Nix did their jobs. They got on base and Teixera did the damage.

  • Anderson Silva

nice 5 pitch walk to open the inning.. Phelps meltdown coming soon

  • Dan in Athens

OTL reporting that MLB is going for 100 games for each guy, claiming the use is one strike and the lie to MLB when asked is the second. Lawsuit time.

    • CountryClub

Not if it’s in the CBA.

      • Dan in Athens

The lawsuits will be similar to those used by the Williams DTs for the Vikings, only to seek an injunction while the guys seek to avoid the penalties. Those lasted more than 2 years, effectively blocking the discipline in PED cases under the NFL’s CBA. Never underestimate the use of injunctive remedies, even to block arbitration of issues – which of course defeats the purpose of arbitration.

  • Kramerica Industries

This “Red Sox are the best team in the AL” routine has seriously gotten old by now.

    • The Real Greg

      Well they are right now.

      Because of two trades.

      The Dodgers trade/money dump
and getting John Farrell from the Blue Jays.

    • Get Phelps Up

      ?
      Texas is, record wise.

      • The Real Greg

        Doesn’t look like it today.

        • Get Phelps Up

Texas will still own the best record by percentage points.

          • The Real Greg

I really wasn’t talking in terms of record. I was talking in terms of giving up 8 runs in two innings.

            • Havok9120

Because, as we all know, one game is an incredibly accurate barometer of the quality of an MLB team.

I actually think there’s a pretty good chance Boston is the better team right now, but your reasoning is pretty horribly flawed.

    • Rolling Doughnut

They seem to have the best offense because they’re all capable of producing at any given moment . . . Although, since the beginning of the season really, they’re all firing on all cylinders. That offense doesn’t seem to lull very much, does it?

They do suffer from the same blight the Yankees do, though, I believe, and that’s left-handed pitching.

      • The Real Greg

        Yep.

Cliff Lee dominated them in Philly.

        • Troll

CC too, right? This past week . . . My perception of time is all whacked out. I think Sabathia crushed them on Friday or something? Brain. Off.

    Look at Stewie being useful.

  • nycsportzfan

Flaherty is right on the money tonight with his calling of this game. THis is one of the best announced games i’ve heard Flaherty and Leiter call to be honest.

  • The Real Greg

Kay just made a point that I was about to make.

Stewart has been mediocre defensively except when it comes to throwing out base stealers. 50% so far this year.

  • nycsportzfan

    Youk!

  • Dan in Athens

    Stewmendous.

  • The Real Greg

    Interesting,

Not counting Tex or Youk, who has the second highest OBP in this lineup?

    It’s Chris Stewart at .323

    • Eddard

Offensively he’s really not that bad for a backup catcher and that’s what he is. I don’t know why people get on him so much as a hitter because he’s about where he should be. Romine is a much worse hitter at this point in his career. It’s defensively and on the bases that Stewart makes too many blunders.

      • Dan in Athens

He’s a very good backup, and like most backups, like Nix, he gets exposed as a full time guy. They are both a little above replacement, and not guys you want starting full time. The hatred for both of the them is bizarre. It’s not like the Yankees are paying him 7 million plus or they are playing at replacement level.

        • The Real Greg

Well if I read this right, the reasons are:

Nix because Sterling and Waldman are founding members of the Jayson Nix fan club.

Stewart is a bit tougher, but I think it’s because the Yankees traded George Kontos for him and a lot of people liked Kontos.

To add, Kontos has struggled this year for the Giants.

  • The Real Greg

Now normally we would be complaining about not getting extra runs there.

    But not with this offense.

  • The Real Greg

    And another lead off walk.

  • The Real Greg

Might want to get the pen up now

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    wtf Phelps

  • Eddard

Come on Phelpsy. Get through this inning and get the W. Get a K and a DP.

  • Pasta

Oh god not Logan i dont want this game booned

  • Pasta

Can you suspend montero in AAA thats like a vacation for those guys.

    • Pasta

      Oops wrong thread

    • Havok9120

Maybe it’ll keep him from being so bored and/or depressed.

    • Roadgeek Adam

They would be suspended, but like Carlos Carrasco, it would not take effect till promotion.

      • Havok9120

        Really? I didn’t know that. It’s a good rule.

        • Roadgeek Adam

Yeah when they called up Carrasco, he had to sit 6 games before the start against us. Now he has to do 8 again, due to the Youkilis HBP.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I don’t think PED suspensions work like that.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    wtp

  • SDB

It is high, it is far… it is caught by Stubbs.

    Thanks, Ma and Pa.

    • Havok9120

      Just like Scooter.

      • Dan in Athens

The best Scooter story is his scorecard’s “WW.” Wasn’t watching.

  • Havok9120

Wow. Nice camera work there YES.

  • Pasta

    You know
If Nix dosent double clutch the throw to first
He has a no hitter going.

    • trr

He really is throwing a strong game

  • Eddard

BGDP showed up tonight and gave us everything we could ask for and more. 6 IP of 1 hit ball.

  • Get Phelps Up

This game seems like it’s 8-0.

    • Havok9120

Don’t jinx it. The Prussian ghosts might take vengeance on the team if you do.

      • Get Phelps Up

        I’ll keep my mouth shut.

  • Troll

Sox have led off the last three innings with a homerun. >:(

  • trr

Hoping that ball hit by Adams would go, he could really use a hit

  • Dan in Athens

How can a guy with a minor league career 10 percent walk rate not walk one time in 65 ABs?

    • Havok9120

      The wonders of sample size.

      • Dan in Athens

At 0 and 65, the probabilities are getting extremely low. We are talking a p value of less than .01.

        • Havok9120

          I’m aware.

  • Wheels

    Don’t screw this up, Joba.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Nice bounce back game by Phelps.

  • The Real Greg

3 out of the last 4 innings leadoff walks.

  • Pasta

    Joba can go with Hughes

  • Pasta

At this point id rather see clairborne or kelly.

  • SDB

Hell of a showing from Phelps. Now I just hope the bullpen locks this down.

Meanwhile, WTF is going on in Boston? 14-3, and Iglesias and Jackie Jesus Jr. are apparently crushing it.

  • teddy

    thanks ump

  • Pasta

Hanging slider lucky please get someone up.

  • The Real Greg

Red Sox have scored 15 runs against Texas in 6 innings.

They have 6 doubles, 1 triple, and 4 homers.

    • Hans Moleman

And the triple was hit by Papi.

    • WhittakerWalt

      In short, TOO MANY HOMAHS.

  • Pasta

Joba about to give it all back fat loser.

    • The Real Greg

He wont get the chance. He’ll be pulled before that,

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Fuck Joba.

  • SDB

    Goddamnit Joba.

  • Wheels

    Fuck Joba.

  • Mykey

    Thanks Joba.

  • Eddard

Go back on the DL Joba

  • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

    Godamn it Jobber

  • Pasta

    Fat loser

  • The Real Greg

Cant blame Joba. The slider was down and away and the Indians get a cheapie.

    • Wheels

What about the two baserunners he allowed on?

      • The Real Greg

        Yes.

        • Dan in Athens

I loathe fat ass, but that pitch wasn’t terrible. The two base runners on the other hand were his fault.

    • WhittakerWalt

Yes, we can’t blame the pitcher who walked the first batter he faced, then hung a slider with two out.

  • Pasta

Id rather they just trade him and let clairborne be the 7 inning guy.

  • teddy

joba pathetic performance, of course yanks have only scored in 1 inning

  • The Real Greg

Look at where the pitch is located. That is not a bad pitch.

    • teddy

lucky it wasn’t a grand slam reynolds was hosed by the home ump

  • Dan in Athens

That was Ichiro’s fault. If he was 12 feet tall or had a rocket up his ass he would have caught that.

    • Troll

No, it was Monica Lewinski’s fault. Butterfly Effect, man, it was the Butterfly Effect.

  • mustang (The Has Been & Wannabes Bunch 2013)

Well at least he can look at speed of pitch and the ball leaving the park at the same time.

    • mustang (The Has Been & Wannabes Bunch 2013)

Well at least he can look at the speed of pitch and the ball leaving the park at the same time.

  • your mom

    Fuckin Joba.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Insurance runs please.

    • The Real Greg

      You question the Great Rivera?

      • Wheels

        Robertson first.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

        There’s two innings left.
And I’d rather they be nice and relaxing.

  • The Real Greg

Of course only one other guy here is looking at where the pitch was located instead of throwing slurs at him.

    • Dan in Athens

      Actually, I’m doing both.

    • Troll

      Face palm.

  • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

No runs in his last 13 appearances? Logan is…good??

  • teddy

    hafner not pinch hitting because

    • The Real Greg

Doesn’t matter because Stewart draws a leadoff walk.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    lol…Reynolds defense.

  • SDB

Time for Nix to lay down a bunt now.

  • The Real Greg

Now have Nix bunt. Can’t pinch hit because they have no one to play 2nd.

  • Rolling Doughnut

Reynolds forgot Ichiro can still run.

  • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

    Small ball!

  • Pasta

Yes finally breaks the boech clinic story

    • Wheels

      Pathetic Robbie.

      • Wheels

        whoops

  • Rolling Doughnut

From what I gather, Joba’s line is two walks and the inevitable jack. What a surprise.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

      only 1 walk

      • Dan in Athens

Again, I hate Joba, but the pitch was on the black and the HR was off the end of the bat and just a good job by a strong major league hitter. The HR was not because Joba screwed up.

        • Rolling Doughnut

OK I didn’t see it but he put two guys on and I bet he got away with a hanger or two. Jobber is the BP version of Phil Hughes.

  • Mykey

Oh what a time this would be Cano.

  • SDB

Meanwhile, 17-3 over in Bah-stun, and Stephen Drew, Iglesias and Jackie Jesus Jr. combining for 6 runs, 7 hits and 7 RBI between them. The Rangers should be ashamed.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Robbie time to get large.

  • Mykey

    Sheesh Robby. Sheesh.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Not cool, Robbie, not cool.

  • SDB

    Ugh, Robbie. Just… ugh.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Jeez Robbie.

  • The Real Greg

Cano losing money by the second.

  • your mom

    Cano……

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Andrew Marchand
    ?@AndrewMarchand
Sr. Yankee official told me team has been informed Cano “is not” in danger of being suspended in Biogenesis scandal

    • Dan in Athens

      Thank God.

    • The Real Greg

The way Cano is hitting right now, it doesn’t make a difference.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Yeah, losing Cano would have no effect on the rest of the season.

        SMDH

        • The Real Greg

I was kind of being sarcastic and showing a little frustration after that DP.

      • Get Phelps Up

Greg suspended 50 games for stupid comments.

        • The Real Greg

          Look above

  • WhittakerWalt

    SO much fail.

  • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

Oof. Can’t squander opportunities like that.

  • Wheels

Welp, it’s now in DRob’s hands.

  • your mom

Fuckin Cano. Pathetic. Pedroia would’ve came thru there.

    • Troll

Were the bases loaded? I haven’t been paying attention. If they were loaded, then yes, Pedroia probably would’ve come through. Boston’s nasty with the bases juiced.

      • Get Phelps Up

Pedroia is 0-5 with the bases loaded this season.

        • Troll

Look at the Red Sox, though . . .

        • WhittakerWalt

          Any sacrifice flies in there?

          • Get Phelps Up

            One walk.

    • Mouse

Actually, in a clutch situation, I’d rather have the little midget batting instead of Cano.

  • Bacon swag and cheese

Will the real Robinson Cano please stand up?

  • WhittakerWalt

LOL Sterling thinks Cano still hits lefties.

  • Wheels

    And the leadoff walk.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Fucking lead off walks.

  • The Real Greg

This bullpen needs to be whipped for leadoff walks.

  • WhittakerWalt

Could we maybe walk fewer batters?

  • your mom

    Lead-off walk again. Awesome.

  • Wheels

    Unreal.

  • Eddard

Robertson and Joba are going to blow this win for Phelps.

  • SDB

Ugh. Such a good start from Phelps, and now this…

  • teddy

thanks for nothing joba and cano, cleary cano isn’t in pedroia class

  • The Real Greg

They need this win badly. To get a string going. Otherwise the malaise will continue.

  • your mom

    DRob, future closer.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Lucky.
    One more please.

  • Cy Pettitte

    DRob so fucking lucky wow

  • WhittakerWalt

I knew we weren’t going to score that insurance run last inning. That was an easy prediction. Couldn’t have predicted this D-Rob meltdown, though.

  • Mouse

    We were lucky there.

  • Defensive Indifference

    Garbage time. Bro.

    • Wheels

Wells must be like 3 for his last 45 now.

      • Wheels

        wrong spot

  • Rolling Doughnut

The baseball gods have intervened in our favor. They will demand a sacrifice, I suggest ARod

  • WhittakerWalt

Better to be lucky than good, sometimes.

  • Wheels

    Whew

  • SDB

    Quite the Houdini act there.

  • Cy Pettitte

I know Mo is Mo but still insurance run(s) please. They’ve flirted with disaster almost every inning.

  • The Real Greg

They don’t call him Houdini for nothing, I suppose

  • your mom

We need some luck cause there ain’t much offensive skill right now.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Cano vs. LHP since last year: 232/297/348, 75 wRC+ in 360 PA

A franchise player really shouldn’t require a platoon partner.

    • The Real Greg

I honestly believe that his performance in the Home Run Derby has clouded his mind to want to hit home runs.

Thusly not worried about going the other way against lefties, thus the lower average.

      • WhittakerWalt

He’s definitely become pull-happy. I’ve never seen so many weak grounders hit to second from Robbie.

  • Eddard

Girardi told Robertson he got lucky and he needs to start pitching a lot better. Don’t walk the lead off man. Attack them

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Whole lotta WTP this game.

  • Leg-End

D-Rob’s face looked like Romine and Gardners after that lightning strike.

  • WhittakerWalt

The Sterling Tease strikes again. Does this guy even know what a homerun looks like?

  • Roadgeek Adam

You’re kidding, four possible home runs for outs thus far. Can we have at least something leave.

  • your mom

Wells is useless at this point. Hope Grandy heals fast.

  • The Real Greg

Rangers are pitching Daniel Murphy in the 8th inning at Fenway

    • Get Phelps Up

      You mean David Murphy?

      • The Real Greg

        Yep Freudian slip.

    • Leg-End

      76 MPH heat.

  • The Real Greg

And MIke Carp K’s LOOKING after a Nava Double

    • your mom

Please tell me Nava`s name is on that biogenesis list.

  • your mom

    Brignac rules!!!

  • teddy

don’t understand not pitch hitting hafner and moving nix to short and cano to 2nd and lose the dh

    • The Real Greg

Brigniac is better defensively than Nix.

  • Roadgeek Adam

Word is Clay Rapada was released by the organization.

    • The Real Greg

Wonder if Nuno’s time here has influenced that.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Domination.

  • Wheels

    Chill out Avilas.

    • Wheels

      *Aviles

  • Get Phelps Up

Aviles wasn’t going to do anything against Mo anyway.

  • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

Closer than it had to be, but its officially a streak!

  • trr

    Mo!
What will we do without him?

  • your mom

    Thank Mo.

  • ClayDavis

Alex Avila is a bit of a punk

  • Leg-End

Aviles wouldn’t have hit Mo with a paddle anyway.

  • Rolling Doughnut

2 in a row. Thanks to Mo.

  • ClayDavis

    Haha Aviles that is.

  • Musky Gift Basket

    ink mo one more year
