Mesa & Mustelier homer in SWB blowout loss

By

RHP Corey Black has been placed on the High-A Tampa DL for an unknown reason. RHP Diego Moreno, who came over in the A.J. Burnett trade and missed last year due to Tommy John surgery, took his spot on the roster. Meanwhile, RHP Chien-Ming Wang was named the Triple-A International League Pitcher of the Week.

Triple-A Scranton (15-2 beatdown by Durham)

  • RF Thomas Neal: 0-5, 2 K
  • CF Melky Mesa: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K — his 87 strikeouts are the most in the organization … by 23!
  • LF Zoilo Almonte: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 3B Ronnie Mustelier: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI – second homer in five games and third in ten games
  • RHP Kelvin Perez: 1.1 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 26 of 48 pitches were strikes (54%) … this should be his last spot start with LHP Vidal Nuno and RHP Ivan Nova being sent down
  • RHP Chase Whitley: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 11 of 20 pitches were strikes
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 WP, 2/1 GB/FB – 20 of 35 pitches were strikes (57%) … has now allowed 12 runs in 29 innings this year after allowing 11 in 64.1 innings last year
  • RHP Cody Eppley: 0.1 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 0 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 14 of 29 pitches were strikes (48%) … he’s allowed 22 runs in 20.2 innings this year after allowing 19 runs in 55.1 total innings last year

High-A Tampa (6-4 win over Palm Beach)

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-5, 1 K — threw a runner out at third
  • DH Angelo Gumbs: 2-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI – 23-for-79 (.291) since coming off the DL
  • LF Ben Gamel: 0-3, 1 K
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-3, 3 R, 1 BB
  • RHP Bryan Mitchell: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 7/6 GB/FB
  • RHP Diego Moreno: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 0/2 GB/FB — first game since the trade … he’ll be 27 next month and he throws really hard, but there’s not much to be excited about otherwise

Both Double-A Trenton and Low-A Charleston had scheduled off-days.

Where is Gary Sanchez, he did not play in the double header yesterday either… Hope he is ok…

  2. JonS says:

Any chance Mustelier can gt a look in the Bronx?

    • forensic says:

If they, for some reason, would prefer to see Overbay in RF than him, then it’s hard to envision him getting a chance at all barring a couple more injuries.

      • Laz says:

I like the Overbay to RF idea, as long as they accept that it is a platoon only sitation. Overbay can’t hit lefties, and should be sitting on the bench for those.

    • Roadgeek Adam says:

Consistency might help, but he’s getting there.

    • trr says:

He’s on everybody’s radar, including mine, but barring more injuries (yikes!) I don’t think we see him ’til Sept.

  3. forensic says:

Eppley doing his best to ensure he never appears in pinstripes again. And that’s fine by me.

  4. Raza says:

I had a feeling Montgomery might struggle a bit in the upper levels. His fastball is quite mediocre in terms of overall velocity and command. If you can’t throw strikes with your fastball, it’s just that much easier to lay of that slider.

  5. Mickey Scheister says:

He’s coming up to the bigs!! No cup of coffee here, it’s a double tall skinny vanilla latte, son!

  6. Jeety says:

Hey Mike, anyone worth watching in the DSL right now?

  7. Bob Buttons says:

It’s been more than a year. Where has Moreno been?

  8. bwitz says:

This team needs offense anyway they can get it. Why not call up Mustelier and send down Adams?

    • Paco Dooley says:

What is the evidence that Mustelier will be any better with a bat than Adams? Seem like similar players – decent bat, not great on D. Adams is on the 40 man, so why swap them?

  9. john says:

Do you think DePaula sees a promotion any time soon? Seems like he’s proved all he can at the A level.

  10. Jay T says:

I was at most of that SWB game yesterday. It was nasty for them. Musty’s homerun was a blast though, out of the park quickly and well over 410 ft. I missed his double but it too sounded like another inch higher and it would have been gone. The pitching staff looked horrible, they couldn’t find the strike zone.

  11. nycsportzfan says:

Man, was looking at Peter O’Brien’s numbers, and that kid can flat out rake. Hes 22 right now, and could get a bump up to High A ball for 2nd half of season, and with any luck could be in Double AA as early as next yr, hopefully. I got a feeling hes a middle order type bat. Hes got size, power, hits for avg..etc

    • Billy says:

O’Brien was a polished college bat and should be doing what he’s doing with young kids. Those projections are pretty aggressive for someone who may not have the d to stick at catcher.

  12. nycsportzfan says:

    Bichette Jr last 10games- 333ba 1hr 7rbi. Hey now!

  13. nycsportzfan says:

Is anyon as excited about Jordan Cote as I am? I just can’t wait to see him pitch this season! I’m definetly gettting out to Staten Island to check him out, thats for sure. He was the guy i wanted in RD3 when we picked. Kids gonna be a monster!

  14. I'm not the droids you're looking for... says:

Sme uuuuuuuugly lines in Scranton. And wtfmontgomery? The Peter Principle in action??
