Nuno injured in Triple-A loss

Game 61: Keep It Going
Yankees drop second game to Mariners 4-1

Triple-A Scranton (4-2 loss to Syracuse)

  • DH Thomas Neal: 0-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K
  • LF Zoilo Almonte & CF Melky Mesa: both 0-4 — Almonte struck out once, Mesa twice
  • RF Ronnie Mustelier: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — threw a runner out at the plate … ten hits in his last 20 at-bats with three doubles and a homer
  • LHP Vidal Nuno: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 18 of 26 pitches were strikes (69%) … apparently he called the trainer out and left the game due to injury, so that really sucks
  • RHP Chase Whitley: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 26 of 37 pitches were strikes (70%)
  • RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 12 of 23 pitches were strikes (52%)
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 14 of 26 pitches were strikes (54%) … allowed just one run in his last three appearances (6.1 innings)

Double-A Trenton was rained out. They’re going to play two tomorrow.

  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 1-3, 1 2B — left the game for an unknown reason after the eighth inning
  • LF Ben Gamel: 2-4
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-4
  • RHP Scottie Allen: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K,  WP, 5/5 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (3-2 loss to Asheville in 13 innings)

  • CF Jake Cave: 0-5, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS
  • SS Cito Culver: 1-6, 2 K — just off the DL with an ankle injury
  • 1B Greg Bird: 0-4, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (missed catch) — picked off second
  • C Peter O’Brien: 3-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K — ninth homer ties him with Sanchez for the most in the organization
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 0-5, 1 K — four hits in his last 23 at-bats (.174)
  • RHP Rafael DePaula: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 48 of 68 pitches were strikes (71%)

  • Angelo Roldan

It’s too bad O’Brien’s pretty old for Low-A.

    • W.B. Mason Williams

And that his defense makes Montero look like Pudge

      • Havok9120

        That too.

  • forensic

Mark Montgomery hasn’t had a single appearance without a baserunner since his first game of the season. I know he’s pitching multiple innings many times, but still…

Guess that’s how you get a WHIP over 1.6.

  • Caballo Sin Nombre

    How did Austin do today?

Double-A Trenton was rained out. They’re going to play two tomorrow.

  • http://Riveravenueblues Mrsgamel

    No AA game today.

  • Bo Knows

I swear the Yankees better be doing something like building De Paula’s innings because it’s not even funny anymore how overwhelming he is in Low A. I’ve heard somewhere that someone from BA said that he thinks De Paula could actually hold his own in a jump to AA right now (interesting comment but I’d still have him make a pitstop in Tampa first).

I’m at the point now I’m gonna go full Skip Bayless and start screaming “UNLEASH”

    • vicki

funny, i thought the expression “go full skip bayless” meant something else entirely.

    • Samuel

No way DePaula can make jump to AA right now. Many swings and misses are versus inadequate hitters at Low A level. His slider is not good enough now to put away AA hitters.

Guys in AA will lay off those pitches very easily and pound his fastball.

  • Bojangles

Serious question for Mike and everyone else. Is Joc Pederson better than any of our outfield prospects?

Gotta be, right? The mid-season rankings will reflect it right?

  • Pat D

Anyone hear anything else on Nuno?

    • trr

      That’s what I’m wondering

  • Fin

Seems the Yankees know something we don’t about Ronie. I mean as easily as the Yankees are to shutdown, shouldn’t he get a chance? If Overbay can play RF, surely they can find him a spot and see if he can hit in MLB.

    • Cool Lester Smooth

He’s still only got a 106 wRC+. They’re probably waiting for him to be hot and dominating the level before they waste a callup.

      • fin

He didn’t hit at all for a month after coming off the DL though, I think hes been on fire for a month since. I don’t think they can really waste a call up on a guy his age tbh. I mean, I have no idea who should be called up from the minors, just seems this guy can hit. It also seems the Yankees can use a guy who can hit.

        • Laz

Really is no wasted callup on this guy, Wells isn’t hitting at all, and Ichiro not much better. Mustelier is 28, if he is going to ever hit it will be right now. They currently have an open 40 man, and I would send down Adams, it isn’t that I don’t believe in him, but he isn’t getting playing time with Youk playing now. He got to experience 65 ab, and they should know what he needs to work on now.

      • forensic

.367/.387/.522/.909 in his last 20 games (since May 15th) not including tonight. And the numbers get better the smaller you make the time frame getting closer to the present.

.174/.224/.261/.485 in his first 12 games coming back from the injury.

        • fin

Seems he should be called up right? Hes been the best hitter in the Yankees system since last year, as far as production goes. Maybe, they peg him as AAAA guy. Seems odd though since he seemed to have made the team coming out camp before he was injured.

  • Wayne

Nuno hurt! This is what we get for not pitching him every five days. I blake this on joe girardi. Joe screwed up another potential starter.

    • fin

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Not sure if serious.

  • Wayne

Nuno is hurt. Pineda has a messed up delivery so he will get hurt again unless we use common sense and change this guys delivery for the better.. Watch we are going to get desperate and trade José Ramírez and Rafael Depaula away. To trade both or either would suck. Hughes throws a stinker every so often. Phelps could still get hurt and is vulnerable especially with line drive that hit him or what if that happens again cause joe let him go too long. Brady Lail hope he does not get traded he is our third best prospect as a starting pitcher. How is mikey o’brien doing maybe the next time pettite gets hurt we could bring him up if he is doing well. Can anyone tell me o’brien numbers lately?

    • Curtis

      Meth, right?

    • Robinson Tilapia

I’ve completely lost any understanding of the DOTF-prominent commentators. You may know the names in the system but, otherwise, I’m not sure you know jack shit about baseball.

      • Pat D

I’m not even sure he knows Jack.

I think he only claims to know Jack, but in fact really only knows his cousin Little Shit.

    • New guy

Hahaha yea the part about phelps makes zero sense. “Phelps could still get hurt”? Any player is vulnerable to injury at any time… Maybe I’m giving him to much of my time even responding.

    • Spaceman Spiff

Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
