With the injuries continuing to pile up at both the big league and Triple-A levels, the Yankees have acquired Fernando Martinez from the Astros for minor league reliever Charles Basford. Martinez was outrighted earlier this year and is not on the 40-man roster, and he will presumably report to Triple-A Scranton.

Martinez, 24, is a former top Mets prospect who never fully developed due to continued injury problems. The Astros originally claimed him off waivers from the Amazin’s last offseason. In 310 career MLB plate appearances, the left-handed hitting Martinez is a .206/.269/.362 (71 wRC+) hitter. He’s produced a .219/.291/.371 (69 wRC+) line in 117 Triple-A plate appearances this summer.

Basford, 22, was selected in the 37th round out of Samford in the 2012 draft. The right-hander pitched to a 5.18 ERA (3.57 FIP) in 24.1 innings for Short Season Staten Island after signing last summer, and he returned to the level this year. Basford allowed four hits and one run in two innings of relief work in his season debut last night.

Baseball America ranked Martinez as one of the 30 best prospects in baseball each year from 2007-2009, but this move is designed to give the team’s top minor league affiliate another warm body, not bolster the big league roster. With Zoilo Almonte called up and Brennan Boesch, Ronnie Mustelier, and Melky Mesa on the DL, Triple-A Scranton is running very short on outfielders. If Martinez shows up in the Bronx this summer, something has probably gone very wrong. Consider this the minorest of minor moves.

    What position does he play

  4. SDB says:

    Career BA .206.

Is this just to make Ben Francisco look more palatable?

  5. JohnnyC says:

They’re low on OFers in Scranton. They had to promote Cody Grice three levels just to have a warm body in the field (he’s doing surprisingly well). Martinez is not coming to the Bronx.

    • Wolfgag's Fault says:

I like Cody Grice. Cody Grice is a friend of mine. you, sir, are no Cody Grice.

Geez, could they find a way to give Grice some steady playing time at an appropriate level & maybe we’ll see he’s a pretty useful outfielder that could be a very helpful fourth outfielder somewhere in the bigs?

    Yay?

Good pickup. I’d probably rather give him ab’s than Wells (though that’s not what they got him for)

  8. Gerald says:

smart pick up. 2 of our AAA OF are hurt, we need depth down there. He’s still 24, Carlos Gomez came into his own at 26. F-Mart is 24.

  9. CashmanNinja says:

This is a low risk move. We need someone to play the OF so this solves that problem. If we get any production from him then it’s an added bonus and will be a pleasant surprise. It’s not like we really gave up anything for him. Relievers are a dime a dozen.

    One year removed from a 107 wRC+ year and 1.9 UZR…. in 130 PA ;)

  11. Robinson Tilapia says:

Sure. Worst case scenario, he helps out Scranton by being a warm body. Best case, he chooses this organization as the place he finally turns into even half of what he was supposed to.

  12. D$1184 says:

If THAT happens, we know something has gone really wrong? So the $100+ million constantly sitting on the DL hasn’t been indication enough?

  13. Kramerica Industries says:

    Really, that Fernando Martinez?

There was an old Mets forum I ventured to back around 2008-2009, and FMart was the real deal back then. Oh well.

  14. Danny says:

Well I did always consider him a Future Yankee …

  15. Crime Dog says:

He was so young for every level, he was in AA by 18!! Crazy how he never panned out, but either way it’s good that they get another warm body up in AAA. They have two guys up in AAA that were called up from Tampa, so obviously they needed somebody.

  16. mustang(The Has Been & Wannabes Bunch 2013) says:

Ok I guess I remember when this guy was the Mets future. They have reached the bottom of the barrel boys. It’s so bad they are signing guys from the Mexican league and trading with the worse team in baseball for ex-Met rejects just to field their minor league club. Weeeeeeeeee.

Still there are Yankees fans running around hoping for A-Rod to have a setback in rehab.

    Lord, give me strength.

I must say it would bring me so much joy for a Mets cast off to develop as Yankees but the chances of that are slim.

  17. Cuso says:

Hey! Did you know that an anagram of Fernando Martinez is “Dean Martin Frozen?”

    Another AAAA OFer….
Hey, Dino! Pour me one too, will ya?

  18. trr says:

Nothing to see here, move along….

  19. LarryM Fl says:

Remember Chris Dickerson if only he was given a shot instead of Mr. Ichiro. We have a guy with speed, arm, good glove and decent bat against RHP plus 5+ million dollars cheaper and a whole lot younger. Maybe F-Mart(great name)will get hit with a blot of lightning and turn it around. Also, we have a new trading partner the Houston Astros.
