Game 101: The Newest Ranger

The Yankees have yet to make a single move leading up to the trade deadline, but their primary competitors for a wildcard spot sure have. The Orioles have added both Scott Feldman and Francisco Rodriguez, and earlier this week the Rangers acquired Matt Garza from the Cubs. The same Matt Garza who will start against the Bombers tonight, his first appearance with Texas.

New York is certainly familiar with Garza given all his time with the Rays. He’s made eleven starts (and one relief appearance) against the Yankees in his career, and they generally hit him hard — 4.48 ERA (~4.85 FIP) in 66.1 innings with eleven homers allowed. All of that damage was done by a much different offense, however. The Yankees have not faced Garza since 2010, and during his time with the Cubs he transformed himself from a four-seamer/slider pitcher to a four-seamer/two-seamer/slider guy. Adding those little running fastballs can make a big difference. Here’s the lineup Garza will face tonight:

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. RF Ichiro Suzuki
  3. 2B Robinson Cano
  4. 1B Lyle Overbay
  5. DH Vernon Wells
  6. SS Eduardo Nunez
  7. 3B Brent Lillibridge
  8. LF Melky Mesa
  9. C Chris Stewart

And on the mound for the Yankees is left-hander Andy Pettitte. He’s allowed at least four runs in seven straight starts and has a 5.04 ERA (3.63 FIP) in nine starts since coming off the DL. Opponents have hit .295/.329/.436 against him during that time.

It’s another Texas-hot day in Dallas, but the sky is relatively clear and no rain is expected tonight. The Yankees are missing the rain by a day or two — it’s supposed to pour in Arlington at the end of the week — which is good because having to come back to town for a makeup game would have been a nightmare in the second half. The schedule is rather tight. Anyway, first pitch is scheduled for 8:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

  1. Eddard says:

I love this no Travis Hafner lineup. Melky deserves to keep playing. That Nuney-Lillibridge combo is a winning one as was proven last night. We just might have a shot against Garza if Andy shows up.

    • 28 this year says:

If Andy doesn’t make it to the ballpark, I am sure Adam Warren can do better than 4 runs in 6 innings.

    • Shittyshittybangbang says:

Nuney / Lillibridge a winning combo ?! Whoa, love that optimism brah ! And it would be a “win” combo. But if they pull-it-off one-mo-again, then…, watch out !

    • Robinston Tilapia says:

Nuney and Lilly World Tour, bitches!

    • OldYanksFan says:

Dude… how can use use the words ‘Lillibridge’ and ‘winning’ in the same sentence????

  2. KD says:

Yanks may have made a move. A move against A-Rod.

    • handtius says:

yeah, stonewall your best right handed 3B option, and possibly your best right handed hitter period (for power at least).

  3. Dan says:

How often does Cashman tell the Steinbrenners “I told you so” regarding A-Rod? It has to be at least once a day at this point.

    • Angelo says:

Yeah, it’s really annoying when ownership of a team tries to make decisions on what players to sign. Let the baseball people do their job. Plain and simple.

      • ExitCashman says:

You mean like when George wanted to sign David Ortiz after he left the Twins and Cashman told him not to? Or when we had Rafael Soriano to fill in last year when Mo was injured? Both owners and GMs make mistakes.

        • mustang (The Has Beens & Wannabes Bunch 2013) says:

          ooops

        • Dan says:

Can’t blame Cashman on not expecting Ortiz to totally naturally become a hall of fame caliber player with zero chemical aids, whatsoever. And if there were any chemical aids, he took them totally by an accident . . .

And he and Giambi would have given the Yanks one of the best fielding First Base tandems in the past 30 years.

And Soriano was overpaid, I would have preferred the draft pick (I’m just glad they were able to get one back). Can’t fault Cashman on wanting to pass when he only ended up being valuable as Mo insurance. They could have found Mo insurance for millions of dollars less.

        • WhittakerWalt says:

Ortiz was a spare part who was released by the Twins. No one expected him to become this. He was a scrap-heap pickup in the purest sense.
It would be like if Ben Francisco had turned into Ken Griffey Jr. after we signed him.

        • Angelo says:

Of course, everyone knew Ortiz was going to become one of the best offensive 1B/DH’s in the game. Also, Soriano was overpaid and had a very player friendly contract. The Yankees didn’t sign him because Mo got hurt. Unless they can predict the future.

You’re analysis is invalid. Baseball people make more informed decisions much more often than owners.

    • Anderson Silva says:

It sure was a bad move, but its not like Cashman has made great moves himself. Look at this team,

  4. Crime Dog says:

Soooo if Arod ever comes back the move is Hafner for Arod right?

  5. ExitCashman says:

Brian Cashman just released a statement on YES.

This problem is easy to identify: Mr. Rodriguez has not been conversing with Alex lately.

  6. Dan in Athens says:

Chicago beat writers confirming that Soriano has agreed to be dealt to certain teams, including the Yankees.

Credit mlbtraderumors.com and the twitter links included.

  7. Leg-End says:

Overbay at cleanup. Make a trade already.

  8. trr says:

Remember when you could just talk BB? About the game? This crap gets old real fast, real fast….

  9. nycsportzfan says:

Ichiro with a nice ripped single.

  10. Anderson Silva says:

1-0 hanging slider, should have swung.. Cano is having some terrible ABs lately. Back to the cold streak

  11. nycsportzfan says:

I knew Cano was gonna completely kill this inning. We finally get guys on in front of him and he has a joke of a at bat. Those are the kinda AB’s that lose ya games.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

Where have you been the past month when Cano was carrying our offense?

      • Robinston Tilapia says:

        Remedial grammar.

        • nycsportzfan says:

No one cares about grammar on a messege board. Mike makes tons of spelling errors weekly. This entire thread has grammar errors all over it.

Look at you for example. Mr. Grammar himself, yet your on here way to much and obviously have no life. Grammars really doing you wonders! Maybe you should worry about getting a job, no??lol

  12. Anderson Silva says:

    Can’t believe Ichiro didn’t go

  13. Dalek Jeter says:

Anybody else having trouble with the sound cutting in and out?

  14. nycsportzfan says:

Nice at bat Overbay, u fucking loser! If you can’t lay off that pitch, then fucking retire! Jesus, these dudes are amateurs.

  15. Anderson Silva says:

Wells up, threat over. It was nice having 2 baserunners.

Really looking forward to having Cano not produce with men on for the next ten years

  16. forensic says:

    Well, that sucked.

  17. What else is new, the negativity parade is always first to the scene.

Glad to see Gardner pass Mantle. Who is next on that list?

  18. nycsportzfan says:

That overbay at bat is just way to fucking annoying! I’ve never seen so many putrid at bats then this season.

Overbay and Wells are a couple of fucking chumps!

  19. Anderson Silva says:

Pettitte is gonna get crushed, again

  20. Leg-End says:

1 pitch, 1 hit. Come on Andy, give yourself an easy start for once.

  21. Eddard says:

Texas did the same thing yesterday, bunting in the 1st inning. We’ve finally met a manager dumber than Girardi.

  22. nycsportzfan says:

Pettittes season is reminding me alot of Jamie Moyer, when he stuck around to long. Its just batting practice.

  23. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Shit together Andy let’s go.

  24. Dalek Jeter says:

    …hooray.

  25. Cy Pettitte says:

Pettitte is the master of 2 out runs allowed, it’s fucking sickening

  26. Anderson Silva says:

so you are allowed to get runners on and then drive them in. AMAZING!

  27. Pseudoyanks says:

Here’s the statement from Brian Cashman as passed along by the Yankees…

“I heard via a text message this afternoon from Alex Rodriguez that he had retained a doctor to review his medical situation. In media reports, we have since learned that the doctor in question has acknowledged that he did not examine Mr. Rodriguez and that he was not retained to do a comprehensive medical examination of Mr. Rodriguez. Contrary to the Basic Agreement, Mr. Rodriguez did not notify us at any time that he was seeking a second opinion from any doctor with regard to his quad strain.

“As you know, it is the Yankees’ desire to have Alex return to the lineup as soon as possible. And we have done everything to try and accomplish this.

“As early as Friday, July 12, when I suggested to Alex that we move his rehab from Tampa to Triple-A Scranton (at Buffalo), Alex complained for the first time of “tightness” in his quad and therefore refused to consent to the transfer of his assignment. Again, last Sunday, Alex advised that he had stiffness in his quad and should not play on Sunday or Monday. We sent Alex to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital for an MRI which evidenced a Grade 1 strain.

“As always, we will follow the rules and regulations set forth in the Basic Agreement, and will again re-evaluate Alex in Tampa tomorrow, as our goal is to return him to the lineup as soon as he is medically capable of doing so.”

  28. Leg-End says:

Time for Pettitte to take a phantom trip to the DL and sort out whatever he needs to sort out.

Let’s see what Pineda has, or just get Phelps up quicker.

  29. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores says:

It’s all right. I already factored in a bad Pettitte first inning into this game. Go bullpen (he may or may not allow a lot more runs but I doubt he makes it 6 innings).

  30. Robinston Tilapia says:

I just tuned in. I thought it was 8-0 Texas from reading this.

  31. Leg-End says:

Just looked up Pettitte’s first inning stats for the year, not including tonight.

    7.41 ERA
    .351 BA
    .934 OPS

    Ouch.

  32. Elton Cod says:

A-Rod and the Yankees have such a weird, resentful relationship, full of lies and public statements of passive-aggression. It reminds me a lot of my parents when I was growing up.

  33. Pseudoyanks says:

Anyone have can’t miss Pizza recommendations in the Syosset/Hicksville/Plainview/Huntington area of Long Island?

  34. nsalem says:

Perfect game vs Cubs was in LA Kenny.

  35. Elton Cod says:

Stewie didn’t get that one, but I liked that he ran as hard as he could. Are you watching, Cano? This is what real baseball players do. If I were picking teams out at the sandlot, I might pick Stewie before Cano, to be honest. Stewie is the type of guy who makes a team a team, makes everyone else play better, does what he can to win. He’s more important to a team’s success than some flashy ‘star’ like Cano.

  36. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

If cano wasn’t so lazy, they get Cruz there… #amidoingitright?

  37. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Sounds like Price is doing work in Boston… 58 pitches through 6.2IP.

  38. forensic says:

When did Matt Kemp become the new Nick Johnson? Dude can’t go a day without hurting himself and hitting the DL.

  39. Lance Barksdale, the hell was that.

  40. Rolling Doughnut says:

Seems like Andy’s not getting that call. Could be because he also doesn’t have Garza’s hellacious curve.

  41. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Pedro Alvarez is trying to kill me. He only homers when he’s on my bench.

  42. BigBlueAL says:

Trying to remain optimistic about this season, adding Soriano/Jeter/Grandy next week should greatly improve the offense. Problem is with the remaining schedule this week Yankees cant afford losing 4 of 5.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Having two of those would be nice.

Texas’s pickups are impressive. Not really scared of what the O’s have added. They’ve stuck with the pack, but those teams may look even tougher now.

It’s going to be a very tough fight.

  43. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

MelkyMesaMania, brother! Almonte can eat a dick? No, A BAG OF THEM!

  44. Pseudoyanks says:

So, after Sexting does Weiner Log Off?

  45. Dan in Athens says:

Did they just say it has been an entire fucking month since a RHB homered?

  46. Alright that was not a strike either.

  47. Darren says:

Wow. An entire injury update and not a fucking peep from Ken, Cone or Meredith about ARod.

Way to totally blow your credibility.

And the evil empire extends its tentacles even into the broadcast booth.

I couldn’t be more in support of ARod. Fuck the Yankees (management)

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I hate to fuck with your righteous anger, Darren, but they mentioned the doctor earlier tonight.

I wouldn’t expect much out of YES. They’re there to promote the team, just like ESPN is there to promote….

      • Darren says:

Ok, I take it back! :) But still, it’s kind of pathetic. And I can’t imagine talking about ARod (however briefly) would have a negative effect on promoting the team.

What did they say earlier? Any new news? it would be nice to see him in the lineup. No HRs by an active righthander since Chris Stewart (!!!!) on May 15.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

I mean, it wasn’t exactly an attempt to report the news. They showed the statement from Dr. Gross saying he cannot clear him to play, he should not count as a second opinion, etc.

There’s only so much I expect from YES. I expect anything outside of what’s said off-the-cuff during broadcasts to be fluff. Honestly, I’m fine with that. I know what I’m getting.

        • Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Feinsand just reported the Yankees will re-examine A-Rod tomorrow, if that helps you at all.

  48. Robinson Tilapia says:

    This is an exciting game.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

The sarcasm is strong in this one.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Pseudoyanks might be able to get his Long Island pizza tonight at the rate this is going.

Hell, if this game continues 1-0, Matt might mistakingly show up after the game ends.

        • Pseudoyanks says:

Nah, I don’t get in until tomorrow. Nothing but that Casserole they call Deep Dish in these parts tonight.

  49. Cy Pettitte says:

    hahaha that was awesome

  50. Robinson Tilapia says:

I fucking love you, Brett. Never get slow.

  51. Dalek Jeter says:

    cue the Yakhety Sax!

  52. Wheels says:

    Nice baserunning Gardy!

  53. Dan in Athens says:

We were one more bounce away from Sportcenter’s Number 1, not top 10.

  54. Eddard says:

YES! We’ve got a shot to score a run thanks to the error. Just put the ball in play!

  55. Dan in Athens says:

    A fly ball? Please?

  56. Robinson Tilapia says:

Ichiro: “b-b-but when Brett did that, he got to third base….”

  57. Jake says:

I think we all know we are not scoring

  58. Dan in Athens says:

    Fuck one.

  59. OldYanksFan says:

    PLease ROBBIE!!!!!!!!

  60. Robinson Tilapia says:

I sense an avalanche of negative vibe if Robbie doesn’t drive him in.

  61. Robinson Tilapia says:

Thank you, Robbie. You can all sit down now.

  62. Cy Pettitte says:

lol at pitching to Cano. idiots.

  63. Dalek Jeter says:

stupid, lazy, unclutch dominican…wait I mean YAY ROBBIE!!!

    • Dan in Athens says:

Who was the guy in San Fran who got fired for the “brain dead Carribeans swing at pitches in the dirt?”

      • Dalek Jeter says:

        Haha, I have no idea.

        • Former ACE MannyGeee says:

“Brain dead Caribbean hitters hacking at slop nightly” ranted Bay Area sports radio talkshow host Larry Krueger about why the San Francisco Giants are playing poorly this year. He also said 70-year-old manager Felipe Alou had a brain “had turned to Cream of Wheat.” For his “racist” and “ageist” comments, he was promptly suspended (although nobody could explain what race “Caribbean” players are). Manager Felipe Alou refused to accept Krueger’s apology and continues to demand that he be fired.

          2005

          • Dalek Jeter says:

Wow. Just wow. I know we joke here, on the internet, under pseudonyms, in jest…but we don’t get paid to broadcast our ideas to 1000s. Gotta be smarter than that.

      • Lukaszek says:

        Larry Krueger

  64. Lukaszek says:

Damn, if only Cano hustled that would’ve been a triple

  65. Dan in Athens says:

Why don’t you walk him and go for the DP? Thanks Ron.

  66. Winter says:

If Brett Gardner had been batting, that would have been a double.

  67. Eddard says:

Tie ballgame! Now they just have to find a way to put another one across and then hand it to Kelley, Drob and Mo. No Boone Logan.

  68. Elton Cod says:

I actually had faith in Cano there. I mean, even if he grounded out for not running hard enough, he would have gotten Gardner home.

  69. BigBlueAL says:

For the love of God no more Overbay at cleanup. Of course the problem is who the hell do you put instead….

  70. Dalek Jeter says:

That stupid directv commercial leads me to a very existential question: would you go to your own funeral, if you could?

  71. Cuso says:

Ron Washington: “Cano ain’t that great. It was the right decision. That first baseman dey got don’t necessary…ily…necessily ground into dat double play like you think, you know. We gets Cano out the way we do.”

  72. your mom says:

    Shutdown inning needed here.

  73. Cy Pettitte says:

you have gotta be fucking kidding me

  74. Eddard says:

Andy is just awful. A HR allowed to Pierzinski on a 1-2 count? Really?

  75. The Real Greg says:

    FAILURE

  76. GardyTime says:

It’s been a pleasure watching Gardner run the bases this year. Him and Ichiro can really cause havoc on the basepaths together. One bright spot in a crap year do far.

  77. Winter says:

Do the Rangers use the Natural music for their HR?

  78. nsalem says:

AJ is hitting over .333 now vs Pettitte in over 30ABs. Why is Cone and Singleton surprised?

  79. BigBlueAL says:

I hate blaming the pitching for losing low scoring games when the offense is the main culprit but shit the Yankee pitchers lately sure have had a bad habit of blowing leads and giving up go-ahead runs late in games.

    • Elton Cod says:

That tends to happen a lot when your team almost never gives you a 2-run lead, rarely gives you a 1-run lead, and usually just ties it at 0-0, 1-1, or 2-2. It’s much easier to do at 1-1 than 6-2.

      • BigBlueAL says:

Totally agree, thats why I aint mad at Pettitte. Although last night and Sunday the Yankees did blow 3-0 leads.

  80. The Real Greg says:

But wait, the Rangers can’t win 2-1? You can’t do that in the AL

    • Dalek Jeter says:

I forgot I was watching a little league game and the game ends after 6 innings. OH WAIT.

      • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Why do you respond to Greg? His trolling has gotten more and more obvious as the season as gone in. I think he even called Cashman “Cashit” or something once.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

      Not consistently.
Unless they’re consistently facing the Yankees offense.

  81. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

In fairness to Pierzinski, my fantasy team REALLY needed that home run. You’re welcome Dalek

  82. Frank says:

Both runs scored with 2 outs. That’s tough to swallow if they wind up losing 2-1.

    • nycsportzfan says:

Fuck this offense! Seriously, you can’t score more then 1run off a guy making his 1st start for his new team! Garza’s good, but not 1unearned run good..lol Jesus Christ!!

  83. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Time to bail Andy out.

  84. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

This team is so damn frustrating.

  85. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

When did Vernon Wells become Loverbay on the base paths?

  86. your mom says:

Can’t be mad at Pettitte. 2 runs in 6 innings is good. We all know the offense is to blame here. They’d be getting shutout of it weren’t for Garza’s error.

  87. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

Coney talks about that ’95 Game 5 a TON.

You can tell it bothers him to this day.

    • BigBlueAL says:

When MLBN did their 20 greatest games that game was one of them. Piniella and Cone were the people interviewed. Coney really was great when talking about the game and how much to this day it still haunts him. The fact it was Mattingly’s last game I think adds to the pain of that loss.

    • Dan in Athens says:

Which is why Yankee fans love him. He cared a ton.

I proudly wear my 36 jersey to all games.

  88. BigBlueAL says:

Sure would be nice to have Soriano and Grandy following Cano in the lineup instead of freaking Overbay and Wells.

  89. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

This 1st pitch shit just reeks of desperation

  90. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Nice, another error leads to another base runner. And that’s an ultra rare error on Beltre.

  91. your mom says:

    Stupid first pitch swinging.

  92. Robinson Tilapia says:

They actually do score runs some days. Really.

  93. BigBlueAL says:

Axisa’s favorite Girardi move, leaving the SP out there too long and allowing him to allow a couple of baserunners before removing him.

  94. Felipe Menace says:

How is Mitch Williams allowed to speak on live television?

  95. your mom says:

Bad job there letting the 8th and 9th batter get on board. Gotta K the side and rally against Cotts in the 8th. Piece of cake.

  96. Eddard says:

I said yesterday they have to take that game to avoid being swept and it appears that will be the case. Andy and Girardi blew it again. Hiroki may throw up goose eggs for 9 innings tomorrow but Holland will throw them up for 10 and they’ll lose 1-0.

  97. Frank says:

Anyone see Tim Hudson’s injury? Pretty gruesome.

  98. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Texas announcers insist on calling Nelson Cruz ‘Nellie’… It’s driving me nutso

  99. Cy Pettitte says:

stuff wise, this is one of the worst outings I’ve see for Kelley. looks like he has nothing

  100. handtius says:

kelly, the new mini robertson. not as good, but damn can he get out of some shit.

  101. your mom says:

Wow no K that inning for Kelley? I’m really starting to like him a lot. What a pickup by Cashman.

  102. Dan in Athens says:

So Kelley becomes DRob next year, DRob closes. Assuming Arod eats a big suspension, and the Yanks pay Soriano’s salary this year more than next, 189 may work.

Also, I hate this annoying girl in the wind power commercials.

  103. Aníbal Violence says:

I blame A-Rod for the spider I just killed in my laundry room.

  104. Former ACE MannyGeee says:

Pronk on the inevitable pinch hit pants shitting. At least he grounded out sharply…

  105. Cy Pettitte says:

can Joe Nathan blow 2 saves in 2 days? (assuming he’s available)

  106. your mom says:

Should have just let Steawart hit.

  107. Sad stat says:

Is Pronk really 2 for his last 47????!!

  108. Eddard says:

They could have sent up a tree stump and it would have had a better chance of getting on base than Hafner did there.

  109. your mom says:

If Nathan is not available who’s closing? Scheppers has got some serious heat.

  110. nycsportzfan says:

So annoying to here Garza get standing ovation for shutting down this double AA lineup.

  111. Winter says:

Is there a reason they left Garza in to pitch to Hafner and then brought in the lefty? I mean, it worked for them, but still.

  112. your mom says:

    Ichiro hit a HR please.

  113. Dan in Athens says:

    No Nathan tonight.

  114. your mom says:

Please don’t tell me Joba is pitching.

  115. Cy Pettitte says:

wow Nathan for a 3rd straight night?

  116. Winter says:

So much for Nathan not being available…

  117. Eddard says:

Just get it back around to Nuney and he’ll take care of Nathan. Just get it to Nuney.

  118. The Real Greg says:

Once again, I request that Axisa goes Shakespearean when describing the offense tonight.

  119. Dan in Athens says:

Coney with an awesome gambling reference.

  120. Cy Pettitte says:

Kelley’s stuff hasn’t been great so Joe leaves him in for a 2nd inning to throw 40 pitches. lol.

  121. your mom says:

    Nathan is pitching? Me likey.

  122. trr says:

Might as well be 13 -1

  123. nycsportzfan says:

Stop talking about Soriano, and get em! Jesus! Before this seasons just about toats, please?

  124. Dalek Jeter says:

Brent certainly has a flair for the dramatic play.

  125. BigBlueAL says:

Since returning from the All-Star break Yankees have been outhomered 8-0. Playing in Fenway and Arlington. Just wow.

  126. Eddard says:
