Roller seriously hurt in Trenton loss

A-Rod goes hitless in first minor league rehab game
Update: Kuroda has sore left hip flexor, won't start on Friday

In a post about rising and falling farm systems (subs. req’d), Keith Law ranked the Yankees among the six most improved systems. They were in the three-team honorable mention category following the three featured teams. On Twitter, Law said the improvement stems from their three first round picks in last month’s draft.

Triple-A Scranton (6-4 win over Pawtucket)

  • LF Corey Patterson: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
  • C J.R. Murphy & RF Fernando Martinez: both 0-4, 1 HBP — Murphy struck out once, Martinez twice
  • DH Randy Ruiz: 1-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K — fourth homer in the last seven games
  • 1B Dan Johnson: 2-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI
  • CF Adonis Garcia: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Brent Lillibridge: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 HBP
  • RHP Chris Bootcheck: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 5/5 GB/FB — 50 of 84 pitches were strikes (60%) … picked not one, but two runners off second base
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K — 14 of 22 pitches were strikes (64%) … nice job to pick up his second career save

Double-A Trenton Game One (4-1 loss to Portland in seven innings) makeup of the April 6th rainout

  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-2, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB — threw a runner out at second … eight walks and four strikeouts in his last nine games
  • CF Slade Heathcott: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K, 2 E (missed catch, throwing)
  • RF Tyler Austin: 0-2, 1 K, 1 HBP

Double-A Trenton Game Two (7-6 loss to Portland in eight innings, walk-off style)

  • LF Ramon Flores: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
  • RF Tyler Austin: 1-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — solo homer tied the game in the top of the seventh
  • DH Andrew Clark: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B
  • 1B Kyle Roller: 0-1, 1 RBI — left the game with what the broadcast called a “serious foot/ankle injury” … he got hurt while running the bases and had to be helped off the field, so hopefully this isn’t a David Adams/Ravel Santana situation
  • LHP Nik Turley: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 26 of 56 pitches were strikes (46%) … when only three innings by design because they’re lining him up for the All-Star Game
  • LHP Francisco Rondon: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 3/0 GB/FB — 20 of 34 pitches were strikes (59%) … 20/6 K/BB in his last 14 innings
  • RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K — 17 of 31 pitches were strikes (55%)

High-A Tampa had a scheduled off-day. OF Mason Williams said he was sick on Twitter, so don’t be surprised if he misses a few games.

Low-A Charleston (4-3 win over Rome)

  • SS Eduardo Nunez: 2-3 — played seven innings in the field … his 20-day rehab window expires two weeks from tomorrow, in the middle of the All-Star break
  • 3B Alex Rodriguez: 0-2, 1 K — had some more on him earlier
  • 1B Greg Bird: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB
  • DH Dante Bichette Jr.: 1-4, 1 R
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — first homer of the year in his 49th game
  • CF Jake Cave: 2-4
  • RHP Jose Campos: 4 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 4/5 GB/FB — 32 of 48 pitches were strikes (67%) … two runs allowed total in his last three starts

Short Season Staten Island (5-2 win over Brooklyn)

  • CF Brandon Thomas: 1-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K — on-base streak is up to ten games, and he’s been on at least two times in each game
  • RF Yeicok Calderon: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K — second Yeicokshot! in as many days
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 5 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 5/1 GB/FB — very nice rebound after his disastrous start last time out
  • RHP Cale Coshow: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 Balk, 4/0 GB/FB

Rookie GCL Yanks1 were suspended due to rain after the fourth inning. Not sure when they’re going to make this one up. Here’s the box score. The second game of their doubleheader was rained out as well.

Rookie GCL Yanks2 Game One (3-2 win over GCL Pirates in seven innings)

  • C Luis Torrens: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B — 9-for-29 (.310) with four doubles and a homer in eight games
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 0-3 — still looking for that first pro hit
  • 1B Renzo Martini: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 0-2, 1 BB
  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-1, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SB — 6-for-19 (.316) with three walks and three strikeouts
  • RHP Jordan Cote: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/1 GB/FB — 27/4 K/BB in 32 pro innings

There is no box score for the second Rookie GCL Yanks2 game, so I have no idea what happened there. The team schedule page say it is still in progress, and I doubt that’s the case. This one will be lost in GCL history forever, I guess.
