Avelino’s huge game leads GCL Yankees to win over hated rival GCL Yankees

LHP Matt Tracy has been activated off the DL, reports Josh Norris. He’s been out for a month and a half with a hip problem. LHP Fred Lewis was placed on the DL with a blister to clear a roster spot.

  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-4, 2 K
  • LHP Dietrich Enns: 2 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 8 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 3/0 GB/FB — boy the wheels have come off this bus in a hurry … 22 runs and 30 base-runners in his last 10.1 innings after 16 runs and 59 base-runners in his previous 68.1 innings
  • RHP Charley Short: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 2 WP, 3/1 GB/FB — 72/11 K/BB in 52 innings

Low-A Charleston Game One (2-0 loss to Augusta in seven innings) completion of the July 7th game that was suspended due to rain with two outs in the bottom of the third

  • CF Jake Cave & SS Cito Culver: both 1-4 — Cave struck out and stole a base
  • 1B Greg Bird: 2-3, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
  • 1B Angelo Gumbs: 1-2, 1 K — wasn’t around for the previous game, so he was subbed in

Low-A Charleston Game Two (5-4 loss to Augusta) I just noticed 3B Dante Bichette Jr. is on the 7-day DL … not sure why

  • SS Cito Culver: 0-3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K
  • DH Greg Bird: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB — eleven walks in his last eight games … I can’t help but wonder if he has Jaff Decker Syndrome, in that he’s passive and not patient
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 K
  • CF Jake Cave: 1-4, 2 K
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 5/5 GB/FB

  • LF Michael O’Neill & RF Yeicok Calderon: both 0-4 — O’Neill struck out once, Calderon twice

  • LF Dustin Fowler: 0-4, 3 K
  • SS Abi Avelino: 5-5, 4 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 SB — he’s out of his mind right now … 21-for-42 (.500) with five doubles, a triple, and seven steals (in seven attempts) in his last ten games

  1. Robinson Tilapia says:

Wayne weeps for Arthur Deitrich Enns.

  2. Different Josh says:

At this point I’m just gonna assume no Clarkin or Judge. Sucks to not see them in the box scores.

    • Selig's BanHammer (Temporarily Not Bob Buttons) says:

Somehow I bet Greg has a high opinion of you.

      • Different Josh says:

I’d hope not. This wasn’t meant to come off as “whiny Yankee fan”.

        • forensic says:

I don’t think he meant it to be calling you whiny. Greg went off on a rant about them in the Open Thread, which I’m guessing all he’s really saying here.

        • Selig's BanHammer (Temporarily Not Bob Buttons) says:

Well it’s just your luck today Greg was whining about how Clarkin or Judge is missing = Yankees crap at developing prospects.

          • forensic says:

hmm, now I don’t know if I was right in my assumption (you know what you do when you assume), but either way I don’t think his nearly rose to the level of Greg’s indignation.

            • Selig's BanHammer (Temporarily Not Bob Buttons) says:

It was more a playful jab at Greg and nothing more. Nothing wrong with wanting to see them alive.

          • Robinson Tilapia says:

I saw that but, since I’ve vowed not to respond to Greg anymore, actually resisted saying to something.

But, for the record, they could keep them out until next season and it really doesn’t mean much.

            Cashman failed.

  3. Steve says:

APB is out for Aaron Judge……. Take your Money and Run

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I picture him rubbing his signing bonus money all over his bare chest somewhere a la Ronnie Garvin after turning on Dusty Rhodes at the ’88 Great American Bash. Never forget that visual.

  4. Mark says:

    Nice work Dellin!

  5. Bo Knows says:

Mike seriously the pessimism is getting out of hand, a guy walking a-lot is now a bad thing?

  6. forensic says:

Just based on that recap, doesn’t look like anything of interest really happened.

I’m guessing that’s going to change a little bit tomorrow and Saturday.

  7. Matt M says:

When’s the last time Pineda pitched?

  8. Jacob the OG says:

Michael O’neil struck out? No Way!

    • forensic says:

Hope he’s got a different temperament than his Uncle, or else there’s going to be a lot of destroyed equipment.

      • Adam says:

It’s funny you say that because his temperament is reportedly one of the few things he has in common with his uncle baseball-wise.

  9. JU says:

Cotham threw 6 IP on 57 pitches!
Is it time to just bring up Dellin and see what he’s got?
Is Tommy Kahnle not a AAA player?

And can someone give me a sense of what type of defensive SS Avelino is please?

    • ChrisS says:

Based on one of Mike’s previous post:
He’s a standout defender with a good arm, good instincts, and good body control, and his offensive game is built around an easy right-handed swing that produces an awful lot contact

So far he’s got 9ks in 95 PAs. Lends a little creedence to the “awful lot of contact.”

  10. nycsportzfan says:

Like i keep saying, Dellin Betances was born for the bullpen and i believe a Closers role. I stand by him getting first crack at the role next yr. His stuff is flat out electric and hes somewhat intimidating as well. Hes what i think of, when i think of closers. His numbers in relief this yr are stunning!

  11. nycsportzfan says:

Another pretty blah night in yankee prospect land. its amazing that so many players can have so few big games.

At least Avelino and Betances were brilliant last night. The rest is just blah.

  12. fat jeter says:

Is there any chance that Murphy, Musteiler, or Beantces gets a cup of coffee before rosters expand? Just want to see some new blood I guess.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

You’ll see Betances in more than a roster placeholder role, I’m sure. Perhaps you see Murphy in September, but that would require a 40-man spot and I believe that’s full with the Soriano signing. Something else would have to give.

Don’t see what Musty’s done to earn it this year. It’s been a pretty lost season for him.

      • fat jeter says:

Yea, I figured musty would get that reaction. I just threw him in there because its kind of been a lost season as a whole for everyone playing 3rd this year. I just figure what harm can it do at this point.

  13. Yanks99 says:

Mike, I was wondering if you running the show if you would ever think about bumping up Delin Betances up to 3 innings and seeing if he can still shut them down. If so, 4 and 5 and see if you can make him a starter again. I know it’s not typical, but maybe he figured something out pitching in relief. From reports, it didn’t sound like he couldn’t handle it because he was getting tired or anything – maybe I’m wrong.

    • Bo Knows says:

It’s his mechanics, they are very complicated, part of me wishes they just do what Darvish did last year and just have him pitch out of the stretch like relievers do except in a starting role.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Yeah. At this point, get him to the bigs, get him some success and, if the need winds up being there, and you think he can do it, then tinker. I’m pretty done waiting for “Dellin Betances AAA Role Switcheroo, Part 823: This Time It’s For REAL.”

  14. Shittyshittybangbang says:

Ok, gotta ask, what is an acceptable level of excitement to have for a GCL prospect ? Quarter, half a chub ? Obviously not the full Stromboli, right ? And, where did this Avelino kid come from ? And lastly, did someone steal Aune’s security blanket, or binky, or nightlight ? This guy’s been body snatched. I guess the position change really f’d him up.

    • fat jeter says:

baseball players should never give you boners. baseball exists as a distraction to prevent premature ejaculation.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

        Ike Davis…………….

      • Pseudoyanks says:

I use higher math to delay the inevitable.

      • Lukaszek says:

I don’t know about that fat jete, I heard that Tyler Wade has a really cute smile. And Gosuke Katoh with those exotic eyes. And if OP gets a bit excited to see Avelino dive for those balls at Shortstop, that’s understandable as well

    • YankeeGrunt says:

Avelino, Martinez and Severino were very highly regarded coming up from the DSL to start this year. Some of the other guys who have had some success, like Jose Javier and Thairo Estrada, were a little less heralded, though Badler has had a nice word or two to say for Estrada since his debut.

  15. coolbreeez says:

It’s my understanding that A Judge is in extended ST as they want to work out some holes in his (massive) swing prior to exposing him in competition. That’s why he’s not playing. It may be the that Yankee Hater Clarkin is also in EST due to the ankle tweak and they see no need to rush that.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I can’t imagine the benefit of getting them a month and a half’s worth of games in the GCL or at SI matters much in the grand scheme of things.

Folks saw a picture of a burrito somewhere and, therefore, think they know exactly what a burrito is and want it out of the microwave now.

  16. Robert says:

Is David Adams one of those AAAA players?

Have seen Mike ONeil play in SI. Talent looks average but the kid plays hard every play, hope he develops.

Avelino 18yrs old from the Dominican after Bichette’s debut in the GCL I don’t get too excited about anyone’s stats down there.

    • YankeeFan says:

Adams hasn’t gotten a chance to prove himself. Only 126ABs into his ML career and remember his experience doesn’t match his age given the fact he basically missed a season and a half. He was hitting .258 (8 for 31) with a 6:6 BB:K in his last 10 games at the level. Just hasn’t gotten a shot due to the teams obsession with Nix.

      • Mac says:

Adams may still prove to be a decent MLB player, but he absolutely did get a chance and did nothing at all to make anyone believe that he’s a better option right now than Nix.

  17. Kosmo says:

Yanks had a lights out loogy in Enns and then they decided to make him a SP. ?

    • YankeeGrunt says:

He earned the chance. He has been in the org for just over a year, there is nothing to stop them from sending him back to the pen. But a lefty who is dominating lefties and righties alike should get a chance to see if he can do it the second time through a lineup.

      • Cool Lester Smooth says:

Exactly. There’s nothing special about a a “lights out LOOGY” in Low-A, but a good lefty SP is sexy.

      • Kosmo says:

doesn´t seem like he´s dominating anyone right now.

        • Cool Lester Smooth says:

There’s nothing stopping them from putting him back in the pen if it doesn’t work out.

Seriously, I’m not sure why you don’t like that they wanted to see if a pretty useless piece could be a useful one.

  18. nycsportzfan says:

Its to bad Cotham coulden’t of stayed healthy more often. I’ve called him a sleeper way to many times and been burnt because of his injuries to say hes a sleeper anymore. But even still, if he can keep his health for awhile, you never know.

  19. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

Is David Adams a AAAA all-star? Are we going to end up trading him to the Pirates and some point, and see him succeed the year after?

  20. King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

I just noticed 3B Dante Bichette Jr. is on the 7-day DL … not sure why

  21. Mac says:

That Bird comment is just ridiculous. You don’t watch the games, and you feel like speculating about a guy who you have been irrationally pessimistic about for a long time?

    Just completely baseless speculation. Why?

Do you even bother to read scouting reports anymore or just guess randomly from box scores?

  22. Wayne says:

    Where is rookie davis?

  23. Bronx Bombers23 says:

Mike is just upset that his man crush Enns has been sucking lately.

For whatever reason he can’t stand Bird, and never misses an opportunity to take a shot at him. I fully expect if he takes an 0-fer tomorrow we’ll see “Stuck in an 0-4 slump…”

  24. Bronx Bombers23 says:

Bird is batting .289, with a .418 OBP, with 26 doubles and 15 bombs. Oh yeah, he’s too passive *rolls eyes*.
