Cubs claim Thomas Neal off waivers from Yankees

O'Brien hits walk-off homer, Avelino triples again in wins

Via Carrie Muskat: The Cubs have claimed outfielder Thomas Neal off waivers from the Yankees. New York designated him for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for Curtis Granderson, who was activated off the 60-day DL last week.

Neal, 25, hit .323/.390/.412 (127 wRC+) with two homers in 292 plate appearances for Triple-A Scranton this year. He also appeared in four games with the big league team, going 2-for-11 (.182) with a walk and a hit-by-pitch (.308 OBP). With Granderson healthy and Alfonso Soriano in the fold, the Yankees have plenty of outfield depth. Neal’s a very limited player (no power, speed, or defense) they’re unlikely to miss.

    In a word, meh

  • Dave M

Yes cuz .300 with .389 OBP suck to have in AAA

  • Poconos Adam

Yeah, Neal was nice, but meh indeed.

I hope Lillibridge makes it back to AAA — he was mashing there and man, you have to love the crazy nature of his utility ability….if he could just hit .240 in the bigs he’d be a great 25th man.

It seemed like his hitting was coming around (to .240, maybe)….

    Oh well.

“Cashman couldn’t get anything for him? Typical. Cashman sux so much!!!q1!”

The Sox released Dewayne Wise today, for those with nostalgic memories. It would be pretty convenient to have him fly back to NYY (SWB) with the rest of the team.

“Neal’s a very limited player (no power, speed, or defense) they’re unlikely to miss. ”

Pretty amazing to me that with the dreck they’ve they’ve run out there this year a guy like Neal doesn’t get more than 13 plate appearances for this club. Both Dickerson and Maxwell are outproducing Vernon Wells, and Neal likely would have too if given the chance. I mean, why see what a 25 year old could do, when you can bring aboard the Vernon Wells Experience, who would have been released by three clubs if not for the idiocy of guaranteed money.

“Both Dickerson and Maxwell are outproducing Vernon Wells”

Check the stats….that is an incorrect statement.

Sure, Wells was AWFUL for two months, but Dickerson did nothing with his PT in Baltimore and Maxwell has been hurt and relatively ineffective this year.

      Actually…

      Vernon Wells 0.2 WAR
      Chris Dickerson 0.5 WAR
      Justin Maxwell 0.7 WAR

The frustrating part is Wells’ level of production was entirely predicatable yet the Yanks decided to spend $13 million for it.
