Yankees have no answer for Lackey, fall 6-1 to Red Sox

Triple-A Scranton (4-3 loss to Lehigh Valley in eleven innings)

  • C J.R. Murphy: 1-6, 3 K
  • CF Melky Mesa: 1-3, 1 R, 2 RBI, 1 SB, 1 HBP — still mashin’
  • 2B David Adams: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • LF Ronnie Mustelier: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Graham Stoneburner: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 4/5 GB/FB — 41 of 62 pitches were strikes (66%) … rotation is pretty thin due to injuries and the David Huff call-up, so he’s back with the club
  • RHP David Herndon: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 4/0 GB/FB — 15 of 16 pitches were strikes … he’s thrown well following Tommy John surgery, have to think the Yankees will add him to the 40-man roster after the season to keep him around as an extra bullpen arm next year
  • LHP Cesar Cabral: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K — ten of 18 pitches were strikes (56%) … 21/4 K/BB in his last 16.2 innings … depending on the team’s plans for Boone Logan, Cabral could find himself back on the 40-man this winter
  • RHP Corey Patterson: 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 1/2 GB/FB — 11 of 16 pitches were strikes (69%) … he’s the third different position player to pitch in the system the last two days

Double-A Trenton (14-4 loss to New Hampshire)

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-5, 3 K
  • DH Ramon Flores: 0-5, 1 RBI — top two hitters went 0-for-10? rough
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HBP
  • LF Ben Gamel: 1-4, 2 K
  • LHP Nik Turley: 3 IP, 5 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 HB, 1/4 GB/FB — only 39 of 85 pitches were strikes (46%) … safe to say he’s been a pretty big disappointment this year
  • RHP Zach Nuding: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 0/1 GB/FB — 20 of 36 pitches were strikes (56%)
  • RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/1 GB/FB — 21 of 34 pitches were strikes (62%)
  • RHP Jose Gil: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 2/1 GB/FB — seven of eleven pitches were strikes … you know things are going bad when the backup catcher has pitch on back-to-back days

High-A Tampa Game One (10-8 loss to Lakeland) completion of the July 4th game, which was suspended due to rain after two whole batters

  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 1-2, 2 R, 3 BB — nine walks and four strikeouts in his last ten games
  • 3B Peter O’Brien: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 K — had two hits in his previous 26 plate appearances combined (.077)
  • CF Taylor Dugas: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
  • RHP Branden Pinder: 4.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 2 WP, 3/6 GB/FB

High-A Tampa Game Two was suspended due to darkness. They’ll make it up as part of a doubleheader at the end of the month.

Low-A Charleston (6-2 loss to Rome)

  • CF Jake Cave: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
  • 2B Angelo Gumbs, 1B Greg Bird & DH Dante Bichette Jr.: all 0-4 — Gumbs struck out once, Bird and DBJ thrice apiece
  • LF Ericson Leonora: 2-4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 K, 1 E (fielding) — eight hits in his last 20 at-bats (.400) with six doubles
  • LHP Tyler Webb: 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1/2 GB/FB

Short Season Staten Island (6-3 loss to Tri-City)

  • SS Abi Avelino: 1-4, 1 K
  • 3B Eric Jagielo: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 K — seven hits in his last 28 at-bats (.250) with five doubles and a homer, so the power’s there
  • CF Brandon Thomas: 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 E (fielding) — 23/4 K/BB in his last ten games
  • 1B Bubba Jones: 1-4, 1 K
  • RHP Rookie Davis: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 3/2 GB/FB
  • RHP Stefan Lopez: 2.1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 2 WP, 2/3 GB/FB — 34/9 K/BB in 29.1 innings … it’ll be interesting to see if they fast-track last year’s 16th rounder now that he’s (presumably) healthy … he’s got a good arm but has been hampered by knee problems in recent years

Rookie GCL Yanks1 (10-3 loss to GCL Yanks2) two teams, one update

  • SS Thairo Estrada: 1-6
  • DH Luis Torrens: 2-5, 1 BB, 1 K — 13 hits in his last 37 at-bats (.351)
  • 3B Miguel Andujar: 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 K, 2 E (both fielding) — hitting streak is up to 13 games
  • LF Nathan Mikolas: 2-4, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
  • SS Tyler Wade: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 2B Gosuke Katoh: 1-5, 3 K
  • LF Dustin Fowler: 2-4, 1 K
  • 3B Chris Tamarez: 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B
  • RF Austin Aune: 0-4, 2 K, 1 CS — 60 strikeouts (45.1%) and four walks (3.0%) in 133 plate appearances this year
  • RHP Angel Rincon: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 5/3 GB/FB
  • RHP Dallas Martinez: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 3/3 GB/FB
