O’Brien homers in first AzFL game

A few winter ball assignments have started to trickle in, but remember, just because someone is on the roster doesn’t mean he’ll actually play. The team controls the player’s winter ball rights but his big league team may ask him not to play, something like that. Guys who are coming off injuries or pitchers nearing their workload limit usually don’t see much playing over the winter. Here are the few names we have so far.

  • Mexican Pacific League: OF Jose Figueroa, IF Walt Ibarra, and UTIL Ronnie Mustelier.
  • Venezuelan Winter League: C Francisco Arcia, IF Ali Castillo, C Frankie Cervelli, C Jose Gil, and UTIL Jose Pirela.

Obviously Cervelli is the big name there. He plays winter ball most years anyway, but he missed a bunch of time to injury/suspension this summer and could use the extra at-bats. Now for the updates from the desert:

AzFL Scottsdale (12-2 loss to Salt River) Wednesday’s game

  • 3B Peter O’Brien: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — 23rd homer of the year … I imagine he’ll hit a few more out here before it’s all said and done
  • LHP Fred Lewis: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — only ten of 22 pitches were strikes (45%) … he’s Rule 5 Draft eligible this winter and I wonder if the team sent him out here just to get one last look before deciding whether he can help them out of the bullpen next year
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB — only 16 of 33 pitches were strikes (48%) … fun fact: his 2.42 FIP this year was the fifth lowest in minor league baseball among pitchers with at least 100 innings pitched (538 qualifiers)

I love reading about Pete o’Brien doing well on offense, but what would be even cooler would be progress with the glove.

Yeah, when someone has the hitting talent that he does, knowing that he can actually play a position (especially one of need) makes things that much more interesting.

The Mexican Pacific League begins tomorrow (friday), most games can be seen on mexican sports channel “AyM Sports” in some cable providers in the US, the league signed an agreement with ESPN Deportes and FoxSports en español but I am not sure if they’ll also carry the games outside of México.

    A bit more info:
José Augusto Figueroa (outfielder) will be playing for the Obregon City Yaquis (a team that has won the last three championships in the mexican winter league and is the reigning champion of the Caribbean Series). Obrgón will be playing on Friday vs the Mexicali city Eagles (Mexicali is one of the biggest cities in the mexican Northwestern, it borders Caléxico and Yuma, about 1.5-2 hours from where I live). With the Eagles until two seasons ago played Pat Venditte, though I have not asked him if he’ll come back (recently got engaged or married), also recently other players like Jhonny Gómez, Luke Montz, and last season Yuniesky Betancourt played there (historically: John Kruk, Piazza, Valenzuela, to name a few).
Ronnie Mustellier will be playing with one of the favourite teams this season (again), the Culiacán city Tomato Growers (Tomateros, about 70% of tomato in México and the US comes from the state where Culiacán is located: Sinaloa). Culiacán will play their first game on Saturday vs their longtime rivals, the Mazatlán city Deers (Mazatlán in nahuatl language means “land of deers”).
Walter Ibarra will be playing with Mazatlán (my favourite team, all my family was born there, though I was born and raised near San Diego California in a Mexican border city about 30 hours (by land) from Mazatlán.
I know sites like purakura will have all the games, those are worth to check, usually good baseball is played in a competitive league, maybe the most competitive league in México, even more so than the Mexican summer league.

Thanks for the update. It’s great that we have people like you and others on here to keep us informed of things like this. Many of us have an interest, but not the time to follow the Winter Leagues closely.

        Thanks =)

In regards to Fred Lewis, do you think the Yankees would use up a roster spot for him even with Vidal Nuno and Cesar Cabral on the roster. I wonder if they would put Francisco Rondon on the roster again instead?

MLB and the Caribbean leagues have signed a new agreement (Winter Agreement), now everybody is elegible to play in the winter leagues, even those in the 40 man roster.

Without the agreement, players who were in a team’s 40 man roster couldn’t play (not even in their own countries). Now, all they need is permission from their MLB team.

A few more players will begin to see action, potentially, tough I think there aren’t any more Yankee playeers who’ll see action during winter.

Sanit is no longer in the Yanks organization, right? Because he’ll pitch tomorrow in México.
